The Scoop: What to Know About Trafalgar Tours

  • Considering booking a tour with Cosmos? I’ve distilled everything you need to know before booking into one scannable page.
  • I’ve verified all the details to make sure the information I’m sharing is spot on and updated for 2024.

If you know the tour company Globus , you already have a baseline for understanding Cosmos , since it’s the budget-traveler-minded arm of Globus. Like its sister company, Cosmos has been around for decades: it’s been offering tours for 60 years. It has a wide range of tours around the world and a strong Europe focus.

In addition to its standard coach tours, Cosmos also has a bunch of other, more specialized tour formats, including small group, “undiscovered” (going off the beaten track in popular destinations), and special-event focused tours. New for 2024, Cosmos is launching So Low pricing that waives the single supplement for solo travelers on select tours.

TourScoop Takeaways

Here’s a quick overview of Cosmos:

  • Countries: 60 countries on 5 continents
  • Tour Size Average: 38 (classic tours), 20-24 (Small Group Discoveries)
  • Tour Type: Primarily coach

How to Book

To book, you can pretty easily go direct through Cosmos via its website. You can also look for deals and help using an online travel agent like  Travelstride  or  TourRadar . Cosmos also has a t ravel agent locator tool on its website.

Credibility Check

Cosmos has solid credibility and satisfaction scores. As part of the Globus family of brands, it has BBB Accreditation and an A+ rating. On Trustpilot , its rating is 4.5 out of 5 (up from 4.3 last year), and its guest-review score on TourRadar is 4.2 out of 5.

Tour Destinations

Cosmos has a wide reach, with tours in 60 countries on five continents. Among the most popular destinations on its more than 100 different itineraries are Britain and Ireland, Canada, France, Greece, Italy, Portugal, and Spain. It also has a number of tours within the U.S.

Cosmos stands out for its affordability and variety of tour styles, even those who don’t necessarily see themselves as tour-type people. Here’s a rundown of tour types (but note that not every tour type is offered in every destination):

  • Small Group Discoveries :   Small Group Discoveries tours are sized between 20 and 24 people (versus the average traditional tour group size of 38). There are small-group tour options for every tour in Europe and North America, and for some dates on South Pacific tours.
  • Undiscovered Tours :   Both Cosmos and its sister-brand Globus offer these “Undiscovered Tours” designed to take guests off the beaten track and into lesser-known and traveled towns and villages with more time in destination. Born notes that these tours are great for “repeat travelers and for those looking for a more in-depth experience in their chosen destination.”
  • Special Event Tours:   Cosmos Special Event vacations focus on large celebrations in North America (think Albuquerque’s Balloon Fiesta and the Calgary Stampede). These tours offer special benefits like better access, close-up views, and behind-the-scenes experiences.

INSIDER JAPAN: 10 Best Japan Tours for 2024

  • Faith-Based Tours :   Cosmos also offers a range of Faith-Based Vacations that highlight centuries of religious history.  These Christianity-focused tours include sacred locations in the Holy Land, Italy, Spain and Portugal.
  • Cruise and Land Tours : The tour company mixes land and cruise experiences on these tours to destination pairs like the Canadian Rockies and Alaska, and Greece and the Aegean Islands.
  • National Parks Tours : Cosmos has about a dozen U.S. national park focused tours. Some mix train journeys or cruises into the tour itinerary.

You can also search tours that are particularly affordable by looking at its Dreams on a Budget section, which features tours under $1,600 per person. And of note for solo travelers is that the single supplement is waived on select departures each year.

Tour Guides

Cosmos tour guides receive extensive training that includes certification by the destination authority and proficiency in multiple languages. Most are from the country in which they lead tours, and all are selected for their passion for travel and their storytelling abilities. Cosmos tour directors average 20 years with the company.

ARRIVE PREPARED: 10 Things to Know Before Your First Group Tour

In addition to the tour directors, Cosmos has a strong network of local guides, many of whom have worked with the company for years.

Inclusions/Extras

Cosmos was an early pioneer in value touring vacation travel, and focuses on turning people’s travel dreams into reality, even when a budget is tight. Cosmos gets to the lower price point by preserving experiences and finding more affordable (but still conveniently located and of good quality) hotels.

Cosmos tours include experienced Tour Directors, pre-selected hotels, guided city sightseeing, transportation, and select meals, including breakfast each day.

Optional excursions can be purchased pre-trip.  Cosmos can also add flights to and from the tour, with schedules coordinated with the tour.  Flights include complimentary airport transfers to-and from the hotel.  And airport transfers can also be added for land-only guests.

Typical Travelers

The average Cosmos traveler is in their early- to mid-50s. Guests come from a range of generally English-speaking countries, primarily U.S. but also Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the UK. Cosmos travelers are an even mix of seasoned travelers and first-timers.  The majority are couples and families, but typically 20%+ are solo travelers.

Communication

The standard pre-trip communication is made up of five emails, including the all-important Travel Packet, with has the detailed itinerary, schedule and flight information (if flights booked through Cosmos), destination information, tips and guidelines on pre-trip requirements and preparation for the destination, and information about booking optional excursions 90 days or closer to the departure date. Vacation planners are available by phone, email and online chat six days a week.

Perfect Fit: How to Choose the Best European Tour for You

Cosmos also has the Cosmos GO app, which provides access to all tour components, including schedules, hotels, included features, destination information, optional excursions, interactive maps and more.  This access is provided pre-trip, 30-40 days prior to departure.

Loyalty Program

The Globus family of brands (Cosmos, along with Globus and Avalon River Cruises) offers a Welcome Back Credit loyalty program. Each trip earns guests up to $250 credit to use on a future trip with any of the brands.

The per-person credit is based on the tour price:

  • $2,499 or Less =   $100 credit
  • $2,500 – $3,499 = $150 credit
  • $3,500 – $4,499 = $200 credit
  • $4,500 & Over =   $250 credit

Guests have two years to book/deposit a vacation using the credit.

Private Options

Any Cosmos Europe tour can be converted into a Private Tour for between one and 24 people. There’s an additional premium, based on the overall number of guests, which is charged for each traveler in addition to the published tour price. Private tour groups get a dedicated tour director, private transportation and driver, and personal, and professional local guides, plus all of the visits and entrances in the original published itinerary. Private tours offer flexibility in both pace and experiences for you and your travel companions. To pursue a private tour with Cosmos, choose your tour from the Cosmos Europe lineup and then contact the company.

Sustainability Efforts

Cosmos is part of the Globus family of brands. The company’s Lighthouse Project focuses on projects that benefit people, places, and the planet, with dozens of areas of focus within each category. Projects include support of The Ocean Cleanup, Trees4Travel, Landmine Design and dozens of other projects and initiatives worldwide.

Health and Safety Practices

Cosmos’ health and safety policy currently includes enhanced cleaning protocols on coaches, hotels, and ships. Cosmos also has a Travel Protection plan that includes a cancel for any reason benefit and covers expenses related to trip interruptions.

Thanks for that info? how much US$ was the suggested gratuities per person per day on your tour?

cosmos tours tipping

personally i would not pay the $95 for the kids.

Surely a gratuity is, by it's nature, voluntary?

1. a gift of money, over and above payment due for service, as to a waiter or bellhop; tip.

2. something given without claim or demand.

Refuse to pay. If it's a CHARGE it should be included in the cost of the tour.

Them asking for gratuities is outrageous. Never heard of such folly before, but then I do live a sheltered life.

If its an advance payment then its hardly a gratuity!

It may be worth noting in this thread that when one says $, the other might be thinking of $.

I would not pay the gratuity up front. It seems to me that you have no guarantee that the full amount is going to reach the right people. It seems more like an extra service charge than anything. For me, the whole point of tipping is that the person who has done the good work for you gets recognition for doing so, and that can only be done through a more direct process of tipping than what Cosmos is requiring.

This from the Cosmos Tourama UK website:

Q: Do I need to budget for tipping?

A: Tipping is totally discretionary, but you should be aware that it is customary to tip the tour director in the region of £1.50-£3.00 per tour day per tour member and £1.50-£3.00 per tour day per tour member for your driver.

95AUS$ equals around £46 which would come to about £3.50 per person per day. But is that amount expected to cover your Tour Director and driver and any local guides and porterage at hotels?

Can I ask who is actually asking for the $95, is it compulsory and how they are justifying it? In other ways do Cosmos say who is getting the benefit from what I would call a surcharge? Most Tour Operators now include tipping guidelines in their pre tour paperwork but that is all they are...guidelines.

How is an Independence by Globus tour different than other Globus tours?

With Independence by Globus, you still enjoy the many benefits of a Globus tour, with an added focus on free time that’s untethered and unscheduled. Like our other award-winning vacations, Independence by Globus tours handle the details with included accommodations, daily breakfasts, select guided sightseeing, and transportation between cities - with air travel and airport transfers upon request. The big difference? Independence by Globus puts the “I” in independent travel with built-in free time to explore as you please – with a wealth of expertly selected Insider Tips for optional excursions and I-Time exploits that speak to you!

Once you have found a vacation that interests you, you can use the "Book It" button located on the tour page. You can also contact a travel advisor or call us at 1.866.755.8581 with any questions and to book your exciting Globus experience.

The Travel Protection Plan offers important services to help protect your vacation purchase. Under the Trip Cancellation Waiver, you can cancel your trip any time up to departure for several eligible reasons as listed in the plan and receive a refund of the normally non-refundable Globus cancellation penalty amount, less the cost of your Travel Protection. If your reason for cancellation does not qualify for a cash refund, you would instead receive a Cancel for Any Reason travel certificate equal to the cancellation penalty amount, less the cost of your Travel Protection. The travel certificate is valid for travel within two years from the original canceled vacation start date, is non-transferable, non-refundable and may not be redeemed for cash.

In addition, the plan offers Travel Insurance benefits, including Trip Cancellation for independent air arrangements, Trip Interruption, Trip Delay, medical expense, emergency medical transportation, baggage loss, theft, damage or delay coverage, 24-hour emergency assistance services, and more.

Why am I asked to give my passport name, gender, and date of birth when booking air?

Due to increased travel security around the world, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) requires airlines to collect this information in accordance with the Secure Flight Program enacted by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. If the name on the airline reservation does not match the name exactly as it appears on your passport or other government-issued ID being used at the time of travel, you may not be allowed to board the plane. It is also important that this information be provided correctly at the time of booking, as any changes to your air booking, which includes spelling, could be subject to a change fee, penalties, higher fares, new schedule, and/or cancellation. TSA information is required within 10 days of booking air with Globus.

Globus is committed to minimizing our impact on the environment and to reducing dependence on non-renewable resources. In this endeavor, we have implemented policies to support this mission and are working carefully to enhance our products with this mission and our values combined. We are committed to complying with all relevant legislation and/or regulations.

Globus makes reasonable attempts to accommodate the special needs of disabled and mobility-impaired travelers but is not responsible in the event it is unable to do so. Because we cannot provide individual assistance to travelers in many situations, and most of our transportation services are not equipped with wheelchair ramps, we recommend that you view our terms and conditions for details and contact us to learn more.

Why is my contact information collected when I book?

There may be times when unforeseen events beyond our control impact travel schedules and potentially disrupt your vacation. These include, but are not limited to, severe weather conditions, acts of nature, and government travel advisories. Under such circumstances, it is critical that Globus be able to contact you immediately and effectively - including nights, weekends, and holidays - to make sure we’ve informed you of any possible changes to your travel.

Additionally, the care and safety of our guests have always been our highest priority. There may be a need to contact you while on the trip or to contact someone back home due to an unforeseen event that happens while on the trip. Therefore, in addition to pre-trip contact information, we also require an emergency contact name and number, as well as an on-trip phone number for all travelers .

Preparing for Your Vacation FAQs

  • Do I need a passport and a visa?
  • What size can my suitcase be?
  • How many bags am I allowed to bring?
  • What is the difference between a twin-bedded room and a double room?
  • What size is a triple room?
  • When are final hotel accommodations confirmed?
  • When will I receive my travel documents?
  • Where can I find information on currency rates?
  • Can I pre-pay my gratuities before my vacation?

Do I need a passport and a visa? When traveling outside the United States, a passport is required for U.S. citizens and many countries require that the passport be valid for at least 6 months after the date of travel. Some countries also require a visa. We know that navigating visa applications and requirements can be confusing. We can help. Globus is pleased to offer its customers the expertise and experience of iVisa, with fast and easy ways to obtain visas, passports, and/or other documents required for travel. You can check visa requirements for your vacation by visiting the iVisa Web site at www.ivisa.com . Simply select your country of travel to obtain any necessary visa forms.

What size can my suitcase be? Due to limited coach capacity, your bag should have dimensions not exceeding 30"x21"x11" (62" linear dimensions) or weight exceeding 50 lbs. Carry-on bags should not exceed the dimensions of 12"x11"x6". Please note that air carriers, cruise lines and other forms of transportation may have other restrictions and requirements including weight, and we recommend that you contact the suppliers directly for additional information. We regret we are unable to accept a second suitcase or any luggage exceeding these limits. Some airlines are also charging fees for checked baggage, and these fees are not included in the vacation or airfare package price. Please check with your airline directly for baggage information and regulations. Globus is not responsible for any additional fees imposed by air carriers regarding baggage.

How many bags am I allowed to bring? Hotel porterage (where available) for one bag per participant is included in the price on Globus and Avalon. Additional bags, if space is available, are charged extra and payable to the Tour or Cruise Director. If no space is available, you are responsible for arrangements for your extra bag(s) from location to location at your expense. Porterage is not included at train stations or at airports. Additionally, porterage is not included at hotel on Cosmos; exceptions exist on select tours based on hotel facilities and operational necessity.   For specific vacation restrictions and information, please refer to the Terms and Conditions as well as your Travel Documents.  Each vacation may have slight modifications to the above.

Your air carrier may have stricter weight/dimension limitations than Globus. Size and weight limitations for carry on and checked baggage vary from airline to airline and even according to destination. Up-to-date information on carrier specific standard checked baggage allowance (including size and weight limitations), the standard allowance (and fee, if applicable) for carry-on baggage, and the standard fee for the first and second checked bag, along with information that additional discounts may apply depending on flyer-specific factors (e.g. frequent flyer status, military, credit card used for purchase or early purchase online, etc.) can be found by accessing www.iflybags.com . Globus is not responsible for additional fees imposed by air carriers regarding baggage. Regulations within most airports require that passengers handle their own luggage through customs. No responsibility is accepted for loss of or damage to baggage or any of the traveler's belongings throughout the duration of the vacation. Baggage insurance is recommended. Review our comprehensive Travel Protection Plan for available coverage options.   What is the difference between a twin-bedded room and a double room?

A double room is a room designed to accommodate two people, though not necessarily with two separate beds. A twin-bedded room has two separate beds of any size; this is what we usually reserve for our guests.

What size is a triple room? A triple room is the same size as a twin-bedded room. It will have beds to accommodate three people; however, we cannot guarantee that there will be three separate beds. If there are only two beds, a rollaway may be requested but also cannot be guaranteed.

When are final hotel accommodations confirmed ? The hotels and accommodations listed are provisional and subject to change and may be substituted with properties of similar standard. Hotels are confirmed approximately 30 days prior to departure and can be found in your travel documents, but are not guaranteed until check-in.

When will I receive my travel documents? Travel documents, including any air tickets, itineraries, and other information, are available approximately two to three weeks prior to departure provided full payment has been received.

Where can I find information on currency rates? If you are in the process of planning your vacation and need information on currency exchange rates, access our currency converter tool .

Can I pre-pay my gratuities before my trip? Globus offers passengers the ability to pre-pay their Tour Director and Driver gratuities before departure in select destinations. A base per-person gratuity rate is calculated for each vacation in North America, South America, Africa, and Asia to conveniently provide gratuities for the Tour Director and Driver, however, Local Guides and other personnel are not covered in this amount. You can pre-purchase gratuities at the time of booking online or over the phone or they can be added after you’re already booked. NOTE: Tips to Local Guides are included in pre-paid gratuities in South America. European and South Pacific tours are excluded from pre-paid gratuities, but you are welcome to offer tips directly on tour.

When On Vacation FAQs

When can I purchase optional excursions?  You can view and pre-purchase optional excursions 90 days before your vacation starts, which will also be available while you're on vacation. If you are traveling on a Choice tour, or on Independence by Globus, optional and choice excursions are available immediately after receiving your deposit. A list of excursions will be included in your documents for review prior to departure. By purchasing excursions beforehand, you have the opportunity to craft a more personal touring experience and plan your time and budget in advance. To purchase excursions for your Globus tour, log in to the MyGlobus site (you will need your invoice/reservation number). How is seating determined on the coach?  We offer daily rotation of seating, which gives everyone a variety of views. Committed to Your Health & Safety Our Global Health & Safety Team has established a worldwide Assurance program, with enhanced on-trip protocols and procedures, to ensure the health and happiness of our guests. Globus Program to Cuba FAQs

  • How is it possible to travel to Cuba?
  • What is Support for the Cuban People?
  • How much free time will I have in Cuba?
  • What type of hotels will I stay in?
  • Can I bring my children on the trip?
  • What type credit card/currency should I use?
  • Can I bring a camera to Cuba?
  • Will my cell phone work in Cuba?
  • What documents do I need for this trip?
  • Do I need a passport & visa?
  • What items can I bring back to the U.S.?

How is it possible to travel to Cuba? The Cuba program featured is not a tour but a Support for the Cuban People program, operated under a United States Department of the Treasury, Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) general license. Globus previously applied for and received individual licenses from OFAC. Thus travelers with Globus can be confident that our itinerary is compliant with all OFAC requirements. You will not travel as a “tourist” but as part of a Support for the Cuban People program and must participate in all program activities.

What is Support for the Cuban People? The Support for the Cuban People program is a full-time schedule of opportunities to engage directly with the Cuban people. Our program features meaningful encounters and activities with Cuba’s residents, musicians, students, artists, private business owners, and entrepreneurs. These will be rewarding cultural and educational exchanges, allowing participants to share their culture and ideas with the Cuban people while learning about them at the same time.

How much free time will I have in Cuba? Under OFAC requirements, all travelers must participate in a full-time schedule of Support for the Cuban People activities during the day. During the early morning hours and evenings, you will be able to explore on your own.

Can I bring my children on the trip? Travelers under 18 years old on the departure date must be accompanied by an adult throughout the trip and must share an adult’s accommodation. Children under 8 years of age are not allowed on our Cuba programs.

We suggest you bring Euros (preferred) in small denominations or USD in small denominations to use while in Cuba. Euros and USD can be used at private business and you often get a better exchange rate than using the Cuban Peso.  Euros can be exchanged at the airport, exchange bureaus, Cuban banks, and your hotel’s front desk. For your convenience, very little cash is needed for these programs, as the majority of meals, activities, and gratuities are included. We recommend you bring as much cash as you would normally spend on incidentals while traveling elsewhere.

NOTE: Spare batteries, film, memory cards, etc., are not easy to find in Cuba, so pack extras.

What documents do I need for this trip? Due to the special requirements to visit Cuba, participants will be required to complete and sign a travel affidavit confirming that they are traveling on a Support for the Cuban People program and are aware of the travel rules. Participants are also required to read and acknowledge the Notice of Cuba Program Information (Cuba travel tips).

Do I need a passport & visa? A passport (valid for at least six months after the scheduled return date) is required for programs to Cuba. A visa is also required to travel to Cuba. Your airline will help you obtain the visa and advise cost.

What items can I bring back to the U.S.? Any items brought back to the United States must be imported for personal use and limits on duty and tax exemptions will apply. These items may include artwork, handmade items, crafts, books, and music. Authorized travelers to Cuba may purchase alcohol and tobacco products while in Cuba but they must be consumed in Cuba. You may no longer return to the United States with alcohol and tobacco products.

A Traveler’s Guide to Tipping in a Changed World

In the age of tip fatigue, many are bewildered by how much to tip in hotels and restaurants and on guided tours. Customs in foreign countries complicate the picture. Here’s some advice from experts.

A colorful, cartoonish illustration shows three tipping scenes: the first shows a tip jar on a table where there is also a drink, fries and sandwich; the second shows a woman with her glasses pushed back on her head, holding a purse, and the third shows a dish with a restaurant check on it, showing a percentage sign; behind it are some food items, and beyond those are two pyramids and a camel.

By Elaine Glusac

Not long into the pandemic, Americans were eager to tip their front-line-working baristas and servers. But now that tip fatigue has set in — driven by the proliferation of payment tablets that suggest tipping for everything from a sandwich at a grab-and-go counter to an ultrasound — consumers are often bewildered by when and how much to tip.

“This is the hottest topic in etiquette right now,” said Daniel Post Senning, the co-author of “Emily Post Etiquette, The Centennial Edition” and the great-great grandson of the etiquette icon Emily Post . He cites the pressure of inflation, the disruption of the pandemic and the rush back to travel for the unease. “There’s growing anxiety and public discussion around tipping.”

Offering guidance on when and how much to tip when you travel, etiquette experts, academics and travelers weighed in with the following advice.

Make 15 to 20 percent your restaurant baseline

Tipping standards at restaurants vary widely around the world. In the United States, the American Hotel & Lodging Association suggests in its “Gratuity Guide” leaving 15 percent of the total bill or up to 20 percent for extraordinary service.

“The minimum is 15 percent,” said Elaine Swann, an etiquette expert and the founder of the Swann School of Protocol in Carlsbad, Calif. “It can be increased from there based on the level of service received.”

Before the pandemic, tip averages in restaurants nationally had crept up to 18 percent, a standard that fell back to 15 percent more recently as inflation grew, according to Amanda Belarmino, an assistant professor in the hospitality school at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. “I don’t think consumers want to be stingy, but everybody’s budget is tight and they’re trying to make trade-off decisions,” she said.

Despite expert advice, consumers may not have a choice. In many American cities, tips are increasingly included in the bill and often are well above 15 percent. A recent article making the rounds in New York argues for a 20 to 25 percent standard.

At a trendy cocktail bar in Los Angeles recently, an $18 drink came to $24 after an 18 percent gratuity and an additional fee for employee health care. The bartender mentioned that the establishment includes tips in their tallies because it serves many guests from foreign countries where tipping is not standard.

According to the Independent Restaurant Coalition , service charges benefit all employees, including cooks and dishwashers as well as waiters. “The service charge model ensures that employee compensation is fair, reliable and not reliant on the diners’ experience or bias,” said Erika Polmar, the executive director of the coalition.

Beyond the United States, tip amounts vary, as illustrated in this tipping map. Often, they are less than in the United States and are sometimes included as a service charge (see the section below on tipping abroad).

Don’t be afraid to say no

Some tip requests should be denied, according to experts.

For example, when you’re ordering coffee or a sandwich from a kiosk or counter and are presented with a payment screen including suggested tip amounts, “Push past that awkwardness and push no tip,” Ms. Swann said. “Proprietors are offering a perk to employees and they’re putting it on the backs of consumers to absorb.”

Caving in to social pressure or even a scowl from the employee is, in Ms. Swann’s opinion, “giving in to a level of entitlement that should be nonexistent.”

The growth of credit card payments over cash has made it harder to show a token of appreciation via the tip jar, especially if you’re not carrying cash. If in the past you would pay with cash and leave the coins, Mr. Senning advised rounding up on your credit card and doing the same thing virtually.

Stock up on small bills

Beyond restaurants, travel offers many other opportunities to leave tips for service providers such as cabdrivers, bellhops and valets. Before she takes a trip, Ms. Swann goes to the bank to get cash, especially the $1 and $5 bills that are nearly impossible to withdraw from A.T.M.s.

Most experts agree taxi or rideshare drivers deserve 15 to 20 percent of the fare, depending on the service and the cleanliness of the vehicle. (Ms. Swann once rode in a rideshare car filled with dog hair and made the rare decision not to tip.)

Airport skycaps and the bell people at a hotel should get a few dollars a bag, based on service, and perhaps more if the task is onerous, like handling golf or ski bags. Valet parkers should get $2 to $5 at drop-off and pickup.

And if you only have larger bills, Ms. Swann added, it’s perfectly fine to ask for change back.

Remember the hotel housekeeper

Etiquette experts say hotel guests should leave $2 to $5 a night for the housekeeper each morning. The American Hotel & Lodging Association recommends $1 to $5 a night left daily, preferably in a marked envelope making it clear that it is intended for the housekeeper. In its tipping guide , UNITE HERE, the labor union whose members include hotel workers, suggests a minimum of $5 a day and more for suites.

Not many travelers comply.

Despite having the most physically demanding jobs in hotels with few avenues for advancement, “hotel housekeepers are some of the least-often tipped employees in the service industry,” according to Dr. Belarmino of U.N.L.V. “Unlike servers, who are often paid less than minimum wage that is then made up by tips, hotel housekeepers’ pay is not contingent upon tips. However, it is a courtesy to tip them.”

But in the age of infrequent or optional room cleaning, which has become more common since the pandemic, the guidelines get murkier. “If you stay one night or if you choose to skip housekeeping, I would recommend tipping about $5 at checkout,” Dr. Belarmino said.

If housekeeping is available on demand, most experts recommend tipping each time the room is serviced. And you may want to consider raising the amount.

“If the hotel won’t do daily housekeeping, make sure to tip extra on the days that you do get service and at checkout, because rooms that have gone days without housekeeping are dirtier and harder for housekeepers to clean,” wrote D. Taylor, the international president of UNITE HERE, in an email.

Mind foreign tipping customs

Customs regarding gratuities vary by country. On some trips abroad, guides with the high-end tour company Abercrombie & Kent use orientation sessions to advise guests on when to tip in unexpected places — like bathrooms in Egypt — and provide travelers with small denominations in the local currency to do so.

If you don’t have a guide to instruct you, make learning the culture of tipping abroad part of your trip planning by consulting guidebooks, tourism board websites and online sources like Tripadvisor .

“You have to look at two things: Is it expected and mandatory as it is here in the U.S. for many service jobs? And what is the social safety net like in that place?” said Pauline Frommer, the editorial director of Frommer’s , which publishes travel guidebooks covering 48 countries, including advice on how to tip.

In countries like Mexico, where wages are low, she advised tipping in restaurants as you might at home. In Europe, where waiters are paid better, tipping is less important. On trips to London and Paris last summer, she found bills with service fees included, often listed as “S.C.” for “service charge.”

“If you didn’t know, you might tip on top of that,” she said, recommending that travelers scrutinize their bills and ask if something is unfamiliar.

In Italy, travelers might find a nominal charge called a “coperto” on their bill covering bread and water.

“It comes from the days when you would go to an inn and if you wanted to have a tablecloth and plates, they charged you for it,” said Pam Mercer, the owner of California-based Tuscany Tours , which specializes in small-group travel in Italy and France.

When it comes to restaurant meals in those countries, “There’s not a hard and fast rule,” Ms. Mercer said. Her company advises guests to tip 5 to 10 percent at restaurants and give the tip directly to the waiter.

In cafes and cabs, she rounds up and leaves the change.

“France pays its employees a living wage, unlike the U.S.,” wrote Janice Wang, an American living in France who runs a Facebook group for expatriates there, in an email. “Hence, servers, hairdressers and cabdrivers don’t need tips to live. They appreciate them, but don’t need them. And they never expect a tip.”

Tip your guide

Guide services come in many varieties — from a walking tour leader to a mountaineer who helps you navigate a rock face. Travelers might engage their services for a half-day trip, a two-week tour, and everything in between and beyond.

The global tour company Intrepid Travel states on its website that “tipping is never compulsory, but always appreciated,” while also making the point that tips are a big part of a guide’s income, especially in the United States and Southeast Asia. On a multiday small-group trip in the United States, the company suggests tipping $7 to $10 a day.

The tour company Exit Glacier Guides notes that 10 to 20 percent of the trip cost for its wilderness outings is standard where it operates in Seward, Alaska. The tip for a group walk led by a naturalist beside the Exit Glacier in Kenai Fjords National Park that costs $59 a person would therefore be about $6 to $12 a person.

CIE Tours , which offers group trips in Iceland, Ireland, Italy and Britain, recommends tipping tour leaders and bus drivers the equivalent in local currency of roughly $7 to $10 each a day, depending on the location.

But the platform ToursByLocals , where local residents set prices for their own tours, discourages tips.

“The guides are in essence entrepreneurs, rather than employees, and we suggest that the best tip a traveler can leave is to return to the site and leave a thoughtful review, which will help that guide to grow their business,” wrote Paul Melhus, the co-founder and chief executive of ToursByLocals, in an email.

Free tours make it trickier to calculate tips, even though guides work solely for gratuities. Free Tours by Foot , which offers city walking tours around the world, shies away from any guidance on tipping, noting on its website , “You name the price.”

In an email, a representative in the New York office of the company wrote that the range runs “anywhere from just a thank you to $100,” with the average at $10 to $20 a person.

On its website and in email communications, Free Chicago Walking Tours is more transparent, recommending $10 to $20 a person for the guided walks that generally last two hours. Jeff Mikos, who owns the company, estimates guides average about $10 a guest on groups that can be as big as 30, but are usually closer to half of that.

About a quarter of the group “will be genuine and thankful and won’t tip, and the middle-of-the-pack average is slightly under $10 a person,” Mr. Mikos said. “But there’s always one couple with $50.”

Useful information and FAQ's

what's the difference between a cheaper tour and a more expensive tour that appears to cover the same route, are there any discounts available, is there any overnight travel and how long do we spend on the bus, what are the coaches like, how do we book optional excursions, what time do the tours depart, where do we use the euro €, where you might not be able to use the euro.

Denmark, Sweden and the UK and some recent members of the EU in the east of Europe have not yet adopted the euro - however, they have not ruled out joining in future. The euro may be accepted by major retailers in the UK and Switzerland. So on your tour of Europe it's now much easier to shop and you won't have to keep changing money as your travel.

? What's the food like on tour

Breakfast is an essential start to the day and a buffet style breakfast is always included on all European tours. A stop for lunch will be made in a suitable location with a few choices that suit everyone. Between a third and half the dinners are included. Vegetarian options are available. Food will be international or typical of the region you are visiting.

What about insurance?

You should not overlook travel insurance for your upcoming trip. We have partnered with InsureMyTrip , because they are the best option to compare plans and find the right coverage for you. They have thousands of travel insurance plans and a one-of-a-kind recommendation engine to help travelers find the right plan. Most importantly, they will be there for you before, during and after your trip if you should need anything - especially help with a claim with the provider.

European Travel Tips

European Hotels

Europe's hospitality industry is centuries old, and its hotels often reflect the varied traditions and standards of their respective countries. While comfortable, do not expect European hotels to be the same as at home. Single rooms in European Hotels are often smaller than in USA hotels. Also, when booking a triple room, the third bed may be a 'rollaway' cot. The room may be the same size as a standard twin room.

Hotel Meals

Dinners that are included in your tour package are generally table d'hote, or "fixed" menus; on occasion, there may be a choice. Tea, coffee or other beverages are not included except on first class tours and at breakfast. Nor is it custom to serve butter with bread, except at breakfast.

In some European countries, continental breakfast is the norm, consisting of tea/coffee, rolls and butter, jam/marmalade. Hotels may charge extra for a hot or buffet breakfast and fruit juices.

Check out your tour itinerary (under 'what's included') to see the type of breakfasts offered on that particular tour.

Many operators, including Trafalgar, limit passenger baggage to one suitcase and one carry-on per person. The size of luggage is shown in the brochure conditions.

Tour companies often include gratuities and service charges as part of the tour package. On a Trafalgar, Insight or Cosmos Tour, some gratuities are included: Baggage handling, meal service for all meals included, and hotel service for all normal service, but not room service or tips to local guides, the Tour Director and Driver.

Tipping the scale

Recommended Tipping:

  • Taxi-fare on meter 10-15% Restaurant - total bill 10-15%
  • Tour Director US$4.00 per person per day.
  • Motorcoach Driver US$2.50 per person per day.
  • Local Sightseeing Guide US$1.00
  • When Service Charge is included, for service above average a small extra tip is suggested.

Currency can be changed at airports, your hotel, a local bank and at "Bureau de Change" locations throughout Europe. The commission rates can be high, so to make your money go further, use pre-paid cards. Traveler's checks are no longer recommended. While most major banks no longer offer them, you can buy traveler's checks through American Express, VISA, and AAA—however, you could have a tough time finding hotels, banks, and stores that still accept them while traveling.

Credit Cards

The majority of larger restaurants, shops, hotels, theatres, etc. in Western Europe, and in many Eastern Europe countries, accept most major credit cards. The bill you sign will be in local currency. This will be converted into your home currency by the credit card company and invoiced in the usual way. You can use American Express, Diner's Club, Visa, and Mastercard to obtain cash abroad from ATMs and banks. Don't forget your PIN number for the ATMs.

Carry your passport with you at all times to ensure against loss or theft in hotels. For added protection, keep a photocopy of your passport in your suitcase. Hotels are sometimes required to hold your passport overnight to comply with local regulations.

It is the law in some European countries to have some form of identification on you.

Phone calls

Almost all hotels will add a service charge to the cost of any phone calls you make from your room. This charge can be high, especially for international calls. It is always cheaper to use public telephones (pay phones) or an international calling service such as AT &T 'USA Direct'. Your tour director will advise you how to use the telephone if you are unsure. Ring late UK/Europe time, it's cheaper. Some countries use prepaid phonecards for a set amount of phone time - no change required and no big bills. Available from tobacconists, phone exchanges and Post Offices. The most convenient way to stay in touch is to use your cell phone. Check with your provider about roaming charges before you travel. You can often buy minutes and data packs in advance to save money or you may have a plan that allows you to 'roam like at home' without further cost.

Tired and travel weary

London hotels have high occupancy rates and check out time is usually by noon. Consequently rooms are rarely available before 1-2pm. Be assured that the hotel staff are well aware that their guests arriving from North America are tired and travel weary, and they will have you settled in your room as soon as possible.

Valuable voltage

Electrical currents vary in Britain and on the continent of Europe. Most countries in the UK and Europe are 220-240v. Some appliances have dual voltage, but if not, we suggest you carry a converter for your electric shaver, travelling iron and other small appliances. Also, pins, holes and plugs differ everywhere, so buy a universal electrical travel adaptor before you go to prevent accidents and damage to your appliance.

Sharing and caring

Anyone travelling alone, not wishing to pay a single supplement and willing to share, can do so. Trafalgar, Insight and Cosmos will find someone of the same sex to share your room. Should this not be possible you will be alone in the room without having to pay the single room supplement. For your well-being, we operate a strict 'No Smoking' policy for room sharing. Sharing is not possible on certain Eastern Mediterranean tours. See the tour page for details.

Many couples share their umbrella. It means they only keep half dry. Travel with your own fold up umbrella (it's better than a raincoat) and you will never be half wet, you'll be totally dry.

Always brand new

When you begin your tour your fellow passengers have never seen you or your clothes before. Both you and your clothes are totally new to them. Wear clothes that you feel comfortable in and you will not only be more comfortable you'll be more relaxed.

Faux your own good

Junk jewellery or fabulous fakes travel beautifully. Leave items of great monetary or sentimental value at home where you know they are safe. It means you will be a little more carefree.

Strange brew

We all like our favourite brew in the morning but in Europe you won't always find tea and coffee making facilities in the hotel room. Be prepared. Buy an immersion heater either here or on the Channel Ferry, take a supply of tea bags etc. and your morning can start just as it does at home.

Plastic hangers that inflate are a great boon to travellers. They keep the back separate from the front of your skirt or blouse and it will drip and dry far faster than a conventional wooden/wire coat hanger. The blow up hanger leaves the item wrinkle and snag free.

Toothless wonders

Some of us wear dentures. If you happen to have a second set, take them along. Should your regular ones break, or you throw them away (as many people have) you can keep smiling, and enjoying your tour.

The buzz word

Wake up calls are always given to passengers when on tour. Should the call not go through, or heavy sleepers not hear it, your own back up alarm clock is a good insurance. One that is lightweight and simple to operate. It's nothing to be alarmed about but Tour Directors adore passengers who are on time.

Keep the corn on the cob

When your shoes look lovely but your feet are killing you, you've made a big mistake. Have on a pair of 'broken in' shoes for daytime walking. This is truly one travel tip that's not corny.

Detectives take tour

Detectives do something you should do every time you check out of your hotel. Open every drawer, look under every bed and behind every door including the bathroom. Returning items forgotten or left behind is virtually impossible and good detectives avoid the problem. Please be a detective.

2 is good for U

For couples, never pack one suitcase for one person and one suitcase for the other person. Split belongings between the two cases. If one case goes astray neither person is left without a change of clothes and necessities. Also, have a credit card or ATM card per person, so if one person loses their wallet or purse, you still have spending power.

Reviews of this Operator

We have just returned from a cosmos….

We have just returned from a Cosmos tour- Gourmet Tuscany. We stayed in Montecatini Terme and traveled from there to many wonderful places, in towns and the fabulous Tuscan countryside. We visit Vineyards for wine tastings, farms for cooking lessons and lunches and dinners in authentic Italian restaurants. All assisted by a friendly, informative tour director. First class holiday

Excellent in every respect

I recently did a 2-week "best of Italy" tour with this company. Our guide, Daniella, was fantastic, the itinerary was excellent and they catered for my rather difficult dietary requirements really well. Really happy and will certainly book with them again

A wonderrful experience

WE saw so much. The tour director Mladin was very knowledgeable and made the experience so enjoyable. The bus driver Paul was so nice and helpful. A couple of the hotels had no refrigerators to keep the water cold. We had to carry our own luggage to and from the rooms. There should have been porters to help us. Over all we had a great time.

Old South &Florida tour

Great organisation, tour guide(Kris) and driver(Tony) who went extra mile and good group of people from all over world. The hotels were excellent in New Orleans and Nashville and very good in other cities. The itinerary was well thought out with visits to Gracelands and Grande ole Oprey topping the bill. We added 3extra nights in New Orleans (giving us 6nights) which was absolutely fab and would advise anyone doing this tour that they consider some extra nights to see and do as much as you can

The tour director expertise and…

The tour director expertise and personality made the trip all the more pleasant. No stress. The local guides as well added to the beauty of this trip. They were knowledgeable and personable. I also have to mention the travelers (the group of 21). The people were friendly an accommodating. This is my third trip with this tour company and I will continue to travel with this company due to excellent planning and customer service. Thank you
