In other words: you can go skiing, diving and fishing – or just visit the many amazing cities.

There are many reasons why one should travel to Iran: the stunning Perso–Islamic architecture of the mosques, all ornated with tiles painted in all shades of blue and green (Isfahan is the best example of it) is top class. The magnificent archaeological complex of Persepolisis a wonder that has very few rivals in the world, and the earthen architecture of Yazd with its wind towers is definitely unique.

What else? Iranian people are incredibly friendly and welcoming, they will stop you everywhere to tell you that you are welcome, ask you questions and your permission to have a photo taken with them. You have a wide selection of places to go hiking in Nepal, but I recommend first testing your level of fitness by hiking the Pool Hill Circuit , one of the easiest multi-day hikes. It is a guided trek that usually departs from the city of Pokhara (which can be reached by plane or bus from Kathmandu) and sees you sleeping in local guest houses – known as teahouses – which are also the best places to enjoy a hot meal.

The hike can be challenging. On the second day there is a 1500 meters elevation gain and it is a complete up hill walk, but it is also very rewarding with incredible views over the Annapurna South. The entire experience costs in the range of $600 USD for a 5 days hike, including food and transportation from Kathmandu.

Sri Lanka Visa: Previously e-Visa, but unfortunately a pre-arranged visa is now required

From the paradise-worthy beaches on Sri Lanka’s South Coast to the vast rolling hills of Hatton’s tea fields, this gem of a country is well worth visiting. Animal lovers will feel right at home in Sri Lanka; I never imagined I’d see my first wild elephant – several in fact – while on safari in Udawalawe National Park. I also glanced a leopard at Yala National Park and, on the smaller scale, I was accompanied by four cute local dogs on my hike up to Diyaluma Falls.

Other must-do activities include hiking up to the insane viewpoints of Sigiriya Rock and Big or Little Adama’s peak and taking Kandy to Ella train journey. I recommend taking the 3rd class carriage to join the friendly locals in singing along to a musical number while the lush, green mountains roll past the window. From unique temples, hundreds of hiking trails and endless ocean sunset spots to choose from, you’ll be hard-pressed to leave Sri Lanka without falling in love with it. Uzbekistan is one of the best upcoming destinations in Asia. For years it was difficult to enter Uzbekistan but in 2019 the country opened its doors with a visa free regime for most nationalities, including Egyptian. This is good news, because there are a lot of things to see and do in this central asian beauty.

Uzbekistan is a journey back in time and full of history with its ancient Silk Road cities of Khiva, Bukhara and Samarkand. When you walk the narrow streets its not hard to imagine the days when camel caravans passed through with spices, silk and other things. The colourful bazaars in Uzbekistan remain lively places of trade.

The cities are also still full of ancient mosques and madrassahs. The Islamic architecture is stunning with intricate blue tilework and mosaics. They are not merely historic sites though. Most are still active places of worship.

Besides all the history it is the hospitality and great food that make Uzbekistan a great destination. The friendly and welcoming people are really one of the highlights and are one of the main reasons why it is such a special country to visit.

Haiti Visa: Visa free

If you love travelling off the beaten track then you will love visiting Haiti. Mostly ignored by Caribbean travellers, Haiti is located on the same island as the Dominican Republic so you can travel overland from here. There are also many flights from other destinations in the region.

While the capital, Port-au-Prince, has a bad reputation, there are other places worth visiting in Haiti. I particularly enjoyed visiting Cap-Haitien on the northern coast of Haiti. It’s a lively place and fun to explore.

There’s also the nearby UNESCO listed Citadel and Sans Souci Palace which are must visit places and will show you a whole different side of Haiti. You may even have it all to yourself, like I did. The Citadel is truly stunning and likely to be a highlight of your visit.

Haiti is one of the poorest countries in the world and it is affordable to travel here, although a lack of accommodation options in some places can drive up prices. There are buses to most places you would want to go.

Tucked into the very heart of South America, Bolivia is a country that often gets ignored. But Bolivia is one of the continent’s most beautiful and diverse countries, home to a superlative array of cavernous peaks, thick, moisture-rich rainforest and simply unreal scenery.

Perhaps the country’s most spectacular attraction is El Salar de Uyuni, the salt flats of the south which are most magical in March and April where rain turns their surface into the world’s largest mirror. Further north, Bolivia’s stretch of the Amazon rainforest is little-visited compared to many other countries but Parque Nacional Madidi is actually considered to be one of the most bio-diverse protected areas on earth, home to over 8,000 species including jaguar and spectacled bears.

But it’s not just the country’s natural wonders that merit exploring. Over 62% of Bolivian people identify as indigenous and their rich Quechua and Aymara cultures are visible in the towns and cities across the country. Some of the best things to do in Bolivia include heading to the Mercado de las Brujas (Witches Market) in La Paz to discover potions to cure skin conditions or even heartbreak, catch the carnival in Oruro to see all of the spectacular indigenous outfits and dances performed there, or tour Tiwanaku, impressive archaeological ruins pre-dating the arrival of the Spanish.

Ecuador is a small country in South American that many travellers overlook. Overshadowed by its neighbouring countries such as Peru and Colombia, Ecuador does not get the tourism it deserves. Though geographically a small country, Ecuador is the home of many different diverse landscapes. One of my favourite countries in Africa is Cape Verde and it always comes high on my list when people ask for suggestions on where to go on holidays.

The former Portuguese colony has an intriguing mix between European and African cultures which created a stunning way of life. Furthermore, this archipelago has some beautiful spots. The islands of Sal and Santiago, where the capital Praia is, are the most famous tourist destinations.

Great weather, white beaches, good winds for kite-surfing, a large number of tourist structures. But my favourites are the westernmost islands of Santo Antao and Sao Vicente . The latter’s main town, Mindelo, is the liveliest town in the whole Cape Verde and is the music capital of the archipelago. Santo Antao is renowned for its hiking trails that develop on the mountainous backcountry, giving super views on the neighbouring islands.

Ethiopia Visa: Visa on arrival

Ethiopia is a truly beautiful country, though it can be a challenging one to visit. If you travel to Ethiopia , you will immediately realize that money doesn’t necessarily buy you quality there and you will have to often fight your way against scams which are always around the corner. Having said so, there are many interesting places to visit. Lalibela, with the Rock Hewn churches, is one of the most spectacular places you will get to see.

Other things you should not miss when in Ethiopia are the Simien Mountains, a fantastic hiking destination; the lovely city of Gondar; the Tigray Churches which have been excavated in the rock; and the Danakil Depression and Dallol.

If you do decide to visit Ethiopia, be prepared for poor hygienic conditions and high chances of catching some sort of food poisoning. Use all precautions to avoid eating uncooked or unsanitary food. Make sure to taste Ethiopian coffee as it truly is top quality. By all means, never offer money to the many children who – anywhere you travel – surround you and demand “hello money” – these kids should be in school and not around for an easy buck.

If you’re looking to explore sub-Saharan Africa for the first time, a great place to start is Ghana. Why Ghana, you ask? Well, let me break it down for you. The first reason you should add Ghana to your list is the food. It’s easy to find delicious and hearty dishes full of flavor, such as Jollof Rice , Red Red , or just some great fried fish. If you make it to Accra, be sure to check out the 805 Restaurant and Buka .

The next reason to visit Ghana is the history. Ghana has done a great job of remembering the history of the country both pre- and post- colonization. You can’t visit the country without stopping at one of the slave castles – either Elimina Castle or Cape Coast Castle. I also recommend that you stop at the Assin Manso Ancestral Slave River, to learn what it was like for slaves before they were sold to the castles.

The third reason why you should visit Ghana is for the people and the culture. Ghanaians are quite friendly, offering smiles and good conversation to anyone they meet. They also KNOW how to party there, and the parties start late and end late. For a fun night out, I recommend stopping at the Labadi Beach Club or Skybar for good music, food, and vibes.

I personally like trying street food and wandering around the local food markets.

In Mauritius, there are activities for everyone, young and old. You can visit surrounding islands, inactive volcanoes, tea factories and animal theme parks or spend the day playing golf, going hiking, diving or snorkeling, among many other things! It’s also warm and usually sunny all year long!

Slowly but surely Rwanda has reclaimed its seat at the table of top destinations in Africa, drawing hundreds of thousands of visitors to its land, rich in wildlife and lush scenery. When people ask me about my recent three-week trip across Central Asia, they often ask which country was my favorite. My answer is always the same: Tajikistan. This Central Asian country is much different than its neighbors, and it was the place where I truly felt like I was experiencing life on the ancient Silk Road. 93% of Tajikistan is mountains, and while the terrain makes transportation outside the capital difficult, it also makes the country a paradise for hikers and adventurous travelers. Each day that I hiked into the hills around the stunning turquoise Iskanderkul Lake, I imagined the merchants and explorers who had trekked the same routes before me (only with camels and horses, rather than a BMW van!). Tajikistan’s capital, Dushanbe, is also fascinating.

Here, you can really feel the influence of Persian (Iranian) culture, from the opulent Rokhat Teahouse to the statue of Persian poet Rudaki on the wall of the Writers’ Union building. In fact, the Tajik language is completely different than Uzbek, Kyrgyz or Kazakh, in that it is, to put it simply, Persian (Farsi) written in the Cyrillic alphabet! So, if you’re looking for a destination that really is completely different, consider taking a trip to Tajikistan!

Tanzania is an amazing country to visit, which offers so much to the people who decide to travel there. With both mountains and seaside, Tanzania is also a fantastic wildlife destination, with plenty of national parks where you can observe animals in their natural habitat. The most popular safari destinations are located in the North of the country, some of the most popular places being Serengeti, Tarangire, Manyara National Parks and Ngorongoro Conservation Area. You can go on a safari in the South of the country as well, the Selous Game Reserve offering a great alternative for people who don’t have the time to visit the North and are based in Dar es Salaam, the biggest city in Tanzania.

Tanzania is also a cultural destination, with so many different tribes welcoming you in their homes to learn about their way of living. On the Southern slopes of Kilimanjaro you will find the Chagga people, who are best known for growing coffee and banana trees on their terraced fields, on the mountain.

Beach lovers who plan a trip to Tanzania are in for a treat, as in Zanzibar they will find white sand beaches and crystal-clear waters that will make them never want to leave.

Uganda Visa: Visa on arrival

The Pearl of Africa is a nickname that should already ring an alarm on why Uganda is a great destination to visit. Adding to the beauty of its landscapes and parks, it is also safe and with pretty good infrastructures. If you go to Uganda, your first stop will certainly be Kampala, the country’s lively capital with a very good food scene.

From here, choose at least one of the beautiful national parks: spot climbing lions at Queen Elizabeth, see the world-famous Murchison Falls, or go into the wildest of all, Kidepo, at the border with South Sudan. Do not forget to chill a bit in Jinja, where the Nile sources from gigantic Lake Victoria are situated.

Last but not least and absolutely my favourite area of the country, visit the south-west, at the border with Rwanda and DR Congo. The lush mountains are great for some hiking and Lake Bunyonyi is a real gem.If you are not convinced, here is an extra bonus: several direct flights a week from Cairo to Entebbe, making it even easier to travel to Uganda.

Zimbabwe Visa: Visa on arrival

Most tourists avoid Zimbabwe due to its unstable political situation, even though the country is perfectly safe for foreign visitors. The upshot of this is that you can visit world-class natural and historical sights without having to jostle with the crowds. Of course, Victoria Falls does draw in plenty of visitors, but it’s still not that crowded if you go early in the morning. It’s probably the second most impressive waterfall in the world after Iguazu Falls in South America and is definitely not to be missed. Instead of flying in, consider taking the overnight train from Bulawayo. It passes right through a national park, so you may even see elephants and other wild animals out the window!

A much lesser-known site that you may even have completely to yourself is the 13th-17th century archeological site of Great Zimbabwe. The most impressive part of these atmospheric ruins is the Great Enclosure, with high, smooth walls with rounded edges and a solid round tower. Keep an eye out for baboons and hyraxes at the site. Even Zimbabwe’s capital, Harare, is a surprisingly calm and pleasant city, with public parks and purple jacaranda trees. While you don’t need to be concerned about personal safety in Zimbabwe, you should be prepared for power cuts and water rationing. And bring plenty of cash, as it’s not possible to withdraw from ATMs with an international bank card.

Natural beauty, amazing wildlife and friendly people make Zambia a fantastic place to visit. It’s also one of the safest countries on the African continent.

The countries main attraction is the magnificent Victoria Falls near Livingstone. Victoria Falls, aka “The smoke that thunders” is one of the seven natural wonders of the world and one of the earth’s largest waterfalls.

Whether you choose to view the waterfall from the boardwalks or test your nerves by swimming at the top in the Angels or Devils pool, the curtain of water that falls is awe-inspiring. You can see the mist of the falls for miles and its one of the few places on the planet that you can see a lunar rainbow on a full moon.

The Zambezi River that feeds the falls is another main attraction of Zambia. Whether you enjoy it through a cruise or a game drive along its banks, the wildlife and sunsets are spectacular. There are a plethora of birds to see, crocodiles, hippos and leopards are all frequent sightings.

Zambia has 20 national parks which make up 30 per cent of the country and safaris are plentiful. For some of the best game parks include South Luangwa, Kafue and Lower Zambezi.

Jordan Visa: Visa free

Jordan is a country you should travel to for many reasons (visa free travel for Egyptians is just one of them).

It is such a beautiful country that is so rich in attractions and sights it is almost mind-blowing. Think about Petra – it is not only famous because one Indiana Jones movie was filmed there but also because it this archaeological site dates back to around 300 B.C and is like nothing you might have seen before.

Whether you visit the narrow canyon called Al Siq or sites like The Treasury – you can spend several days in Petra without getting bored. But of course Jordan is more than Petra – for more ancient sites visit Jerash just north of Amman or discover Amman itself that is home to several ancient attractions. And if you want are looking for a bit more of an adventure, visit Wadi Musa and hike through the canyon. Do not worry though, you will also have enough options to rest and chill, so whether you do that in Aqaba or at the Dead Sea – Jordan holds something for everyone.

And let’s not forget to mention the awesome locals, the great food and the security the country offers. Jordan is perfect for road trips , solo travellers, families, couples or a group of friends and this is why you should travel to Jordan.

The food of Lebanon is legendary throughout the world. Man’ouche or shawarma from a street vendor, kakeh from trolley-cart man, or al mazza at one of the thousands of fine restaurants in any city or town you visit.

While Egypt has a history and archeological treasures going back many thousands of years, Lebanon is not without its own historical legacy. The Roman temples of Baalbek and the ruins recently unearthed in the Beirut city centre, the Temple of Emmoun in Saida are world class. My favourite, without doubt is Byblos, in Jbeil. Here you can see and feel the oldest continuous civilisation, with artefacts and buildings from the Bronze Age to the current day.

What’s that you say? You’re not satisfied. You want more. How about the MIM Museum with one the finest collections of crystals in the world. Even the castles from Tyre and Sidon in the south to Batroun in the north, the waterfalls of Jezzine, Baakleen and Afqa, or any number of the beautiful beaches along the entire coast.

Whatever time you spend in Lebanon isn’t enough. I have travelled there more than 30 times. Each time I go I visit somewhere new, and I am enthralled.

Right next to it, you will find The Walled Off Hotel, also known as Bansky Hotel as it has several of his works of art.

Ramallah, the administrative center of Palestine, is a vibrant city. Make sure to also explore Jericho and the nearby archeological sites, and the Jordan River baptism site.

Hebron is the most interesting place to visit if you care to learn more about the history and of the Palestinian conflict with Israel. Palestine is not a cheap place to visit as its economy aligns with that of Israel, one of the most expensive countries in the world. There are no airports so you have to fly into Tel Aviv or Amman and from there travel to Jerusalem and then Bethlehem or other cities by bus. You can use Israeli Shekels for your expenses and Israeli SIM cards work there.

Can I Travel to Egypt Without a Visa?

Egyptian citizens, including dual nationals, are expected to enter and exit Egypt using their Egyptian documentation. If you have an Egyptian national ID or valid Egyptian passport, you may be required to show it.

If you are traveling with children who are also dual nationals, you may need to provide documentation proving custody or parental permission for the child to travel into or out of Egypt.

Depending upon your nationality and reason for visiting Egypt, there are three main methods for obtaining an Egypt visa.

If you’re from a country eligible for a visa upon arrival, you can get your visa when you land at major Egypt airports, like Cairo International Airport. Almost all travelers require a visa to enter Egypt, but fortunately, the process is pretty simple, and a little advance planning goes a long way.

This guide will walk you through the entry requirements for visiting the land of pyramids on a tourist visa.

Who needs a visa to visit Egypt?

Most nationalities need a visa to enter Egypt, but citizens of many countries can apply for an e-Visa in advance or obtain a visa on arrival at Egypt’s international airports. Both cost US$25.

Getting an e-Visa is generally a smoother process than getting a visa at the airport. Apply for a tourist visa online in advance on the Egyptian Government's official e-Visa website . All you have to do is fill out the online application form and pay.

If you decide to get a visa at the airport when you land in Egypt, be prepared to wait in line – bring your own pen to fill out the paperwork in line or on the plane – and pay in cash (US dollars, euros or British pounds only, not Egyptian pounds).

Citizens of Bahrain, Hong Kong, Kuwait, Macau, Oman, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates can enter Egypt visa-free for up to 90 days. Citizens of Malaysia can enter for up to 14 days.

If you're not eligible to get a visa on arrival or an e-Visa, head to the Egyptian embassy or consulate in your home country and apply in person. The visa process can take several weeks.

How to get an e-Visa for Egypt

To save time, apply for an e-Visa before your trip to Egypt. Citizens of these countries are eligible for Egypt’s e-Visa and can apply on the Egyptian government's official website . Your passport must be valid for at least six months before the date you intend to arrive.

The process is simple: sign up for an account, fill the form and pay the US$25 using a credit or debit card. You’ll receive email notifications as the application is processed.

If you’re issued a visa, you’ll be emailed a link to your e-Visa to download and print the document. When you land in Egypt, present the e-Visa to the Egyptian border patrol with your passport. Have a copy of your accommodation details or tour booking in case you’re asked to show them at the airport.

Egypt’s e-Visa can be single or multiple entry. The single-entry visa allows visitors one entry into the country for stays of up to 30 days. The multiple-entry visa allows travelers to come into Egypt an unlimited number of times over a period of 180 days and for up to 30 days at a time. Apply for a multi-entry visa at least seven days before your trip.

Visa on arrival in Egypt

If you don’t have time to apply for an e-Visa, you can still get a visa on arrival at the airport if you’re eligible. Visas are available for purchase (US$25) at a kiosk in the arrivals hall before the immigration counters.

Have the correct amount in cash in a major foreign currency (US dollars, euros or British pounds) to avoid delays.

The visa comes in the form of a stamp that you’ll need to put into your passport to present at the immigration counters and passport control.

If you opt for a visa on arrival, you’ll need a passport that’s valid for at least six months from your arrival date, a travel itinerary and documentation to show you've booked accommodations or tours.

Visa on arrival is available at all of Egypt’s international airports. The downsides are that you can be issued a single entry visa only, and the lines at the airport can be long.

You don't need a visa to stay in Sinai on short trips

If you are visiting the resort towns on the Gulf of Aqaba coast and won’t be going to mainland Egypt, you can stay in Sinai for 14 days without buying an Egyptian visa. The Sinai-only visa allows travellers to visit Sharm El Sheikh , Dahab , Nuweiba , Taba and St Catherine, but you cannot go to Ras Muhammad National Park.

The Sinai-only visa is available at the airport in Sharm El Sheikh and the Egypt–Israel border crossing at Taba. If you arrive at Taba and plan to visit mainland Egypt, you must purchase a visa online in advance or at an Egyptian embassy abroad.

Reconsider travel to Egypt due to  terrorism . Exercise increased caution in Egypt due to  the Embassy’s limited ability to assist dual national U.S.-Egyptian citizens who are arrested or detained.

Do not travel to:

The Sinai Peninsula (with the exception of travel to Sharm El-Sheikh by air) due to terrorism .
The Western Desert due to  terrorism .
Egyptian border areas due to  military zones .

Country Summary: Terrorist groups continue plotting attacks in Egypt. Terrorists may attack with little or no warning, and have targeted diplomatic facilities, tourist locations, transportation hubs, markets/shopping malls, western businesses, restaurants, resorts, and local government facilities. Terrorists have conducted attacks in urban areas, including in Cairo, despite the heavy security presence. Terrorists have targeted religious sites, to include mosques, churches, monasteries, and buses traveling to these locations.

Due to risks to civil aviation operating within or in the vicinity of Egypt, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has issued a Notice to Air Missions (NOTAM) and/or a Special Federal Aviation Regulation (SFAR). For more information U.S. citizens should consult the Federal Aviation Administration’s Prohibitions, Restrictions and Notices .

Local law prohibits protesting or demonstrating without a permit. Being near anti-government protests can draw scrutiny from Egyptian police and security forces. U.S. citizens have been detained for participating in protests and for posting content on social media perceived as critical of Egypt or its allies.

The U.S. Embassy may have a limited ability to provide consular services to dual U.S.-Egyptian citizens. Egyptian law considers dual citizens to be Egyptian citizens.

The U.S. government has limited ability to provide emergency services to U.S. citizens anywhere in the Sinai Peninsula as U.S. government employees are not authorized to travel to these areas (with the exception of the beach resort of Sharm El-Sheikh; travel to Sharm El-Sheikh is only permitted by air). The American Citizens Services (ACS) Unit uses an online appointment system for those coming to the Embassy to receive routine consular services Sunday through Wednesday, except for official holidays (U.S. and Egyptian). Entry, Exit and Visa Requirements

Passport and Visas:

U.S. citizens must have a visa to enter Egypt.
U.S. citizens can obtain a renewable single-entry 30-day tourist visa on arrival at Egyptian airports for a 25 USD fee. A multiple entry visa is also obtainable for 60 USD.
The Government of Egypt has created a website for the issuance of “ e-visas .” There are other websites purporting to offer electronic visas, some of which reportedly charge double the official price, but this is the only official Government of Egypt portal for this service. U.S. citizens and the citizens of 44 other countries are eligible to apply through this means in advance of their travel.
Egyptian immigration officials occasionally have denied entry to travelers without explanation.
U.S. citizens who have experienced difficulty with their visa status in Egypt or are concerned about their eligibility for a visa upon arrival should apply for a visa at an Egyptian embassy or consulate prior to travel, but a visa obtained prior to entry does not guarantee admission to Egypt.
Visas for gainful employment or study in Egypt must be obtained prior to travel.

Entry from Israel:

U.S. citizens arriving from Israel at the Taba border crossing should obtain a visa ahead of time.
If travelers do not obtain a visa prior to arrival, they may either apply for a no-fee, 14-day visa that is only valid for travel within the Sinai Peninsula, or they may obtain a 30-day tourist visa valid for travel throughout Egypt for 25 USD.
The 30-day visa requires the submission of a travel agency support letter that may be obtained from travel agents at the border; their fees for providing this service vary.
The Government of Egypt opens this border on an infrequent and unpredictable basis.
Travel groups and/or humanitarian aid convoys that wish to cross at Rafah would need to contact the Egyptian Embassy in Washington for permission prior to travel.
The Egyptian government screens travelers before allowing entry/exit through the Rafah border crossing with Gaza.
The U.S. government advises its citizens to avoid travel to Gaza; the U.S. Embassy does not issue travel letters or provide any assistance in crossing to and from Gaza.
Travelers to Gaza from Egypt should read the Travel Advisory for Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza and are reminded the Sinai Peninsula remains a particularly dangerous area, with frequent Islamic State of Iraq and ash-Sham (ISIS) attacks on security forces and civilians.

Diplomatic and Official Passports:

Diplomatic and Official passport holders, when entering Egypt for official business, are required to have visas before arrival in Egypt.
Diplomatic or Official passport holders must not use these passports to enter Egypt for unofficial travel, and should use their personal passports, following all appropriate regulations.
Travelers attempting to enter Egypt with diplomatic or official passports who do not have visas will be denied entry and required to remain in the airport transit area, at their own expense, until their immediate departure from Egypt can be arranged.
The U.S. Embassy in Cairo is unable to intervene in such situations. Military personnel arriving on commercial flights are not exempt from passport and visa requirements.
The Egyptian Embassy in Washington currently requires at least three weeks, and sometimes much longer, to process official and diplomatic visa requests, an expedite letter from the Department of State notwithstanding.
It is incumbent upon all official travelers to submit their visa requests and passports to the Egyptian Embassy well in advance of travel.

Work Permits:

U.S. citizens who wish to come to Egypt for work must obtain work permits and work/business visas before arrival.
All work permits must be obtained through the employer. These permits may be acquired from the Ministry of Manpower and Migration offices in the district of the employer; accordingly, these permits authorize residency in the country.
U.S. citizens who arrive as tourists but want to change their status after arrival in country may acquire a three-month tourist/non-working residency visa to allow sufficient time to change their status from tourist to worker.
U.S. citizens in Egypt on tourist visas are not permitted to work.

Medical Requirements:

U.S. citizens arriving from an area that has been infected with yellow fever will need to provide proof of immunizations.
Please verify this information with the Egyptian Embassy before you travel.

Exit Requirements:

U.S. citizen women married to Egyptians do not need their spouse's permission to depart Egypt as long as they have a valid Egyptian visa or valid Egyptian passport.
A U.S. citizen departing Egypt with a dual-national child (U.S.-Egyptian) may be required by Egyptian immigration officers at the airport to demonstrate that they have proof of consent of the non-traveling Egyptian parent.
If travelers attempt to depart Egypt after the expiration of their visa, they may be required to pay a fine at the airport. Travelers should ensure that they arrive to the airport early with sufficient Egyptian currency to pay any fines.
The U.S. Embassy does not issue travel letters to exit Egypt.

Dual Nationals:

If a dual national has the annotation “Egyptian origin” on their entry visa, they will require proof of Egyptian citizenship in order to exit Egypt.
This is also true for dual nationals who remain in Egypt for more than six months.
In some cases, if a dual national loses their U.S. passport, they will be required to present their parents’ Egyptian birth certificates and be documented as Egyptian citizens in order to obtain a temporary/replacement entry stamp to facilitate their travel out of Egypt.
Male U.S. citizens who also hold Egyptian nationality, between 18-40 years old, who have stayed in Egypt more than 180 days, are required to finalize their Egyptian military status before departure, or risk being refused departure from Egypt by Egyptian Immigration officials. The U.S. Embassy is unable to intervene in these situations. For more information see: https://tagned.mod.gov.eg/ .

Safety and Security

The Department of State Travel Advisory warns U.S. citizens to avoid travel to the Sinai Peninsula (with the exception of travel to Sharm El-Sheikh by air) and the Western Desert. Travel to the Libyan and Sudanese borders is also not recommended. U.S. citizens in Egypt should maintain a high level of vigilance throughout the country due to the threat of terrorism.

Between December 2018 and May 2019, terrorist incidents in tourist areas in greater Cairo killed four tourists and wounded at least 18 others. Terrorists may attack with little or no warning, and have targeted diplomatic facilities, tourist locations, transportation hubs, markets/shopping malls, western businesses, resorts, and local government facilities. There is a possibility of terrorist attacks in urban areas, including in Cairo, despite the heavy security presence. In August 2019, a car bomb explosion outside of a hospital in Cairo killed at least 20. Additionally, terrorists have targeted religious sites, to include mosques, churches, monasteries, and buses traveling to these locations.

The Egyptian government has attempted to address security concerns and has visibly augmented its security presence at tourist locations, but challenges persist, and the threat of terrorism remains. Police and military are also engaged in operations to combat terrorism and disrupt terrorist cells in the Sinai Peninsula and the Nile Valley.

Egypt’s borders are under military control; movement of non-military persons and vehicles is substantially restricted, and in some cases prohibited, within these areas. U.S. citizens should not travel in these border zones.

It is illegal to photograph police stations, military barracks, and certain other sensitive public buildings.

U.S. citizens are urged to remain alert to local security developments, avoid demonstrations, and be vigilant regarding their personal security at all times throughout the country. U.S. citizens should also carry identification and a cell phone or other means of communication that works in Egypt, and it is advisable to pre-program the U.S. Embassy’s telephone number (+20 2 2797-3300) and email address ( [email protected] ) into the device.

Travelers must obtain permission and a travel route from the Egyptian Military Intelligence and the Tourist Police Headquarters via a local or overseas travel agency to access Egypt's frontiers, including the borders with Libya, Sudan, Israel, and parts of the Sinai Peninsula off paved roads.

High concentrations of World War II-era unexploded landmines are located in the World War II battlefields along the Mediterranean coast west of Alexandria, the Eastern Desert between Cairo and the Suez Canal, and much of the Sinai Peninsula. Travelers are urged to be especially cautious in these areas.

Crime: Crime levels in Cairo and Alexandria are moderate.

The vast majority of criminal acts against foreigners are crimes of opportunity, such as purse snatching and pickpocketing.

Harassment of women, including foreigners, remains a serious problem. Incidents of harassment range from lewd comments and gestures to indecent exposure and inappropriate physical contact.

Tourists should be alert to being overcharged for various services and for being victimized in scams common to tourist destinations worldwide. Tourists should expect to encounter aggressive vendors at Egypt’s shops in urban areas, as well as at the many temples and archaeological sites. Some will offer “free” gifts to tourists which, once accepted, lead to demands for money. Most sites have specially designated tourist police who can assist in uncomfortable situations.

Internet romance and financial scams are prevalent in Egypt. Scams are often initiated through Internet postings/profiles or by unsolicited emails and letters. Scammers almost always pose as U.S. citizens who have no one else to turn to for help. Common scams include:

Money transfers

The U.S. Embassy receives frequent reports of online financial scams, often involving a fraudulent romantic partner requesting money for hospital bills or legal expenses to depart Egypt. Be skeptical about sending money to anyone known only through online contact.

Victims of Crime:

U.S. citizen victims of sexual assault are encouraged to contact the U.S. Embassy for assistance.

Report crimes to the local police at 122 and contact the U.S. Embassy at +(20) 2-2797-3300. Remember that local authorities are responsible for investigating and prosecuting crime. The Embassy cannot intervene in legal disputes.

Failure to report crimes before leaving Egypt will make it impossible to seek prosecution at a later date. U.S. citizen tourists can forward their complaints for investigation to the Tourist Police Headquarters. For crimes involving children, you may call Egypt’s Child Emergency Help line by dialing 16000 . Egypt’s National Council for Women provides some assistance to women who are victims of domestic violence, or other complaints, at phone number 15115 or website: http://www.oo-ncw.org .

Tourism: The tourism industry is unevenly regulated, and safety inspections for equipment and adventure facilities may not frequently occur. Hazardous areas/activities are not always identified with appropriate signage, and staff may not be trained or certified either by the host government or by recognized authorities in the field. In the event of an injury, appropriate medical treatment is typically available only in/near major cities. First responders are not always able to access areas outside of major cities and to provide urgent medical treatment. U.S. citizens are encouraged to purchase medical evacuation insurance. Local Laws & Special Circumstances

Criminal Penalties: Travelers are subject to local laws. The Egyptian legal system is different from the legal system in the United States, with significantly different standards of evidence, due process, and rule of law. Travelers should be conscious of their behavior and how it may be interpreted by Egyptian authorities. If one violate local laws, even unknowingly, one may be denied entry, expelled, arrested, or imprisoned. Individuals establishing a business or practicing a profession that requires additional permits or licensing should seek information from the competent local authorities, prior to practicing or operating a business.

Egyptian police and security forces do not require probable cause in order to stop, question, and detain individuals. Failure to carry proper identification, such as a passport, may result in detention and questioning.
Suspects may be detained without charges or access to immediate legal counsel for months during the investigative stage of a criminal case.
U.S. citizens have been detained for several days or more in non-criminal cases, including immigration violations.
Local laws prohibit protesting or demonstrating without a permit. Even being in the vicinity of anti-government protests can draw scrutiny from Egyptian police or security forces, including demands to search personal electronic devices. U.S. citizens have been detained for posting content on social media perceived as critical of Egypt or its allies.
Punishments often can be harsher in Egypt for comparable crimes than they are in the United States. Penalties for drug offenses can be particularly severe, including life in prison or the death penalty.

Arrest Notification: If you are arrested or detained, ask police or prison officials to notify the U.S. Embassy immediately. See our webpage for further information.

Dual U.S.-Egyptian Citizens : Egyptian law considers dual nationals to be Egyptian citizens and thus the Egyptian authorities do not automatically notify the U.S. Embassy when a dual national is detained, or provide information about their alleged crime. Family members, friends, and/or traveling companions may notify the ACS Unit at U.S. Embassy Cairo if the arrested U.S. citizen is unable to do so. U.S. citizenship does not provide protection from detention or arrest by Egyptian authorities and individuals detained may be subjected to prolonged interrogations and extended detention. U.S. citizens arrested for any reason in Egypt may be deported, even if they are not convicted of a crime. Detained U.S.-Egyptian citizens have been asked by the Government of Egypt to renounce their Egyptian citizenship as a condition of their deportation to the United States.

Consular officers must obtain authorization from Egyptian authorities to visit American detainees.

Entering or exiting Egypt with more than $10,000 is prohibited. Attempting to enter or depart Egypt with any instruments of currency in the sum of more than $10,000 could result in the confiscation of the money over $10,000 and other penalties.

Importation of all types of drones, including small civilian drones used for personal or touristic purposes is strictly prohibited. Potential penalties for violating are harsh, and a recently passed law authorizes the death penalty for using a drone in support of terrorist activity.

Counterfeit and Pirated Goods: Although counterfeit and pirated goods are prevalent in many countries, they may still be illegal according to local laws. You may also pay fines or have to give them up if you bring them back to the United States. See the U.S. Department of Justice website for more information.

Cultural Property: Travelers should note that Egyptian law prohibits the unauthorized removal of antiquities (including historic coins, ceramics, and architectural elements) both from archaeological sites and other sources in Egypt. Egyptian law also forbids the intentional damaging of antiquities, such as inscribing or painting on them or attaching advertisements. The trade, sale, or export in antiquities is also heavily restricted and regulated. Travelers may be prosecuted if found to be looting or damaging archaeological sites, buying antiquities, or smuggling antiquities out of Egypt. Penalties include fines and/or imprisonment.

LGBTI Travelers: LGBTI individuals face significant social stigma and discrimination in Egypt. Egyptian law does not criminalize same-sex sexual activity, but LGBTI persons and advocacy groups have reported harassment, intimidation, arrests, and other forms of abuse, including by police. There are also reports that authorities have used social media, dating websites, and cell phone apps to entrap persons suspected of being gay or transgender in an act of “debauchery,” which is a criminal offense that carries sentences of up to 10 years. ACCESSIBILITY: While in Egypt, individuals with disabilities may find accessibility and accommodation very different from in the United States. Businesses and institutions in Egypt generally do not make special accommodations for persons with disabilities, and Egyptian authorities do not enforce laws mandating access to transportation, communication, and public buildings by persons with disabilities. Pedestrian sidewalks and walkways are limited, uneven, high, and sometimes used by cars and motorcycles.

Accommodations on public transportation are not offered for elderly individuals or persons with disabilities. Crosswalks are not in widespread use and motorists have the right of way. Pedestrians should exercise extreme caution.

Women Travelers: Many women travel safely each year without incident. However, when it comes to health and security, women travelers are more likely to be affected by religious and cultural beliefs of the foreign countries they visit. The truth is that women face greater obstacles, especially when travelling alone.

Women, especially those traveling alone, should exercise particular care in crowds, on public transportation, in rural areas, and in isolated sections of temple and pyramid complexes. Women have been groped in taxis and while in public places.

The Embassy continues to receive reports of U.S. citizen women subject to domestic violence, sexual harassment, verbal abuse, and rape in Egypt.

Some Egyptian NGOs provide assistance to victimized women within the Egyptian community. Women victimized overseas may be entitled to receive compensation for counseling and/or other services such as relocating back to the United States.

Ambulance services are not widely available and training and availability of emergency responders may be below U.S. standards.

Insurance: Travelers should make sure their health insurance plan covers them when outside of the United States.

The U.S Embassy cannot pay medical bills.

Doctors and hospitals often expect cash payment for health services.
The U.S. Embassy strongly recommends supplemental insurance to cover medical evacuation, since medical transport out of the country can be prohibitively expensive or logistically impossible.

Medical Care:

Emergency and intensive care facilities are limited. Most Nile cruise boats do not have a ship's doctor, but some employ a medical practitioner. Hospital facilities in Luxor, Aswan, and Sharm el Sheikh are adequate, but they are inadequate at most other ports-of-call. The Egyptian ambulance service hotline is 123. Although availability of ambulances is improving, getting them through Cairo traffic can be very challenging.

Beaches on the Mediterranean and Red Sea coasts are generally unpolluted. However, persons who swim in the Nile or its canals, walk barefoot in stagnant water, or drink untreated water are at risk of exposure to bacterial and other infections and the parasitic disease schistosomiasis (bilharzia).

It is generally safe to eat freshly prepared cooked food in hotels, on Nile cruise boats, and in mainstream restaurants. When selecting a restaurant, travelers should select a clean and reputable place, eat only freshly prepared, cooked foods, avoid all uncooked food including raw fruits and vegetables. Tap water in some locations is not potable. It is best to drink bottled water or water that has been boiled and filtered. Well-known brands of bottled beverages are generally considered to be safe if the seal is intact.

Although the Embassy cannot provide medical advice or provide medical services to the public, a list of hospitals and doctors in Egypt can be found on the Embassy website.

Prescriptions: Travelers should carry prescription medication in original packaging, along with your doctor’s prescription.

Vaccinations: Travelers should be up-to-date on all recommended vaccinations , per CDC’s information.

Travel and Transportation

Traffic Laws: Although the enforcement of traffic laws generally is lax, foreigners are subject to extra scrutiny and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs could result in arrest or detainment.

Road Conditions and Safety: Driving in Egypt is extremely hazardous. Egypt has one of the highest occurrences of road fatalities per mile driven in the world. Intercity roads are generally in good condition, but unmarked surfaces, pedestrians, stray animals, sandstorms and fog, vehicles without lights, and disabled vehicles without reflectors are among the many hazards present on highways, especially after dark.

Driving Cairo’s busy maze of streets can be an extreme challenge to foreigners, especially those used to a culture of structured rules and regulations. Even residents of Cairo must use extreme care and situational awareness to navigate the capital’s hectic streets. Impatient drivers typically ignore traffic rules, which police seldom enforce. Most traffic lights in Cairo do not function; instead, police officers, using finger and hand movements to direct traffic, normally staff the main intersections.

Vehicle accidents remain a significant safety concern.

Visitors thinking about driving in Egypt should carefully consider other options, such as a taxi or hired driver. If visitors decide to drive, it is essential that they take the utmost precautions and drive defensively. Drivers should be prepared for unlit vehicles at night, few road markings, vehicles traveling at high rates of speed, vehicles traveling the wrong way on one-way streets, divided highways, and connecting ramps, pedestrians dodging in and out of traffic, and domesticated animals on the roadways. Motorists should be especially cautious during the rare winter rains, which can cause extremely slippery road surfaces and localized flooding; Egyptian drivers are not familiar with driving in wet conditions, making such periods particularly hazardous.

Pedestrians should also exercise extreme caution on high-volume/high-velocity streets, like Cairo’s Corniche, which follows the eastern bank of the Nile River, and Alexandria’s Corniche along the Mediterranean.

Public Transportation: Public buses and microbuses are not safe, and Embassy personnel are prohibited from using them. Embassy personnel are also prohibited from traveling on Cairo’s metro system. Embassy personnel are prohibited from traveling by train, which is a particularly unsafe means of transportation, with regular accidents that sometimes involve mass casualties.

Embassy personnel are generally prohibited from traveling outside the greater Cairo and Alexandria areas by motor vehicle, with the exception of travel to beach resorts on the western side of the Red Sea and near Alexandria. Furthermore, Embassy policy prohibits personal travel via privately-owned vehicle to any part of the Sinai Peninsula or the Western Desert.

Luckily, there are countries out there where you can travel visa-free – we don’t mean getting a visa on arrival, like in Lebanon, as many of us already know! Here are six of those countries.

A beautiful country rich in history where you won’t have to worry about the language barrier, Jordan makes for a fantastic trip outside the country. Known for its marvellous Dead Sea, as well as the ancient site of Petra with its stunning tombs and temples carved into pink sandstone cliffs, there is so much to explore in Jordan. Going after your Indiana Jones fever dream should feel extremely tempting given the convenience of it: the country is extremely close to Egypt, and you needn’t worry about a visa whatsoever.

Egypt Visa Requirements

Visitors must meet the Egypt entry requirements to travel to the country.

Foreign nationals must have a passport valid for at least 6 months. The majority of nationalities also need a visa. Citizens of just 10 countries can visit Egypt without a visa for a limited time.

Travellers from more than 70 countries can get a visa for Egypt online . The Egyptian eVisa is the most convenient option for visitors, the application process is 100% online .

Anyone not eligible for the eVisa needs to get an Egyptian visa through the embassy or consulate.

Which nationalities require a visa for Egypt?

In the past, Canadian citizens could secure an Egyptian visa online until October 2023. However, Canada has been excluded from this option. Consequently, Canadians now need to request their Egyptian visa directly from an embassy.

Visa requirements to travel to Sinai resorts

Certain nationalities do not need a visa to visit the Sinai resorts of Sharm el-Sheikh, Dahab, Nuweiba and Taba. These are:

European Union countries
Israel (must enter through the Taba border crossing)

To benefit from this visa-free policy, you cannot not leave the resort during your stay. You must also arrive through the following airports:

When you arrive you’ll receive a visa-free entry stamp in your passport . This permit allows you to stay in Egypt for up to 14 days .

If you plan to visit for more than 14 days or travel outside of your resort, you’ll need to apply for an Egyptian visa . The same applies if you’re not from one of the countries listed above.

What are the Egypt e-Visa requirements?

As well as being from an eligible country, eVisa applicants also need to meet the other eligibility criteria . Travellers must be visiting Egypt:

Document requirements for the Egypt online visa

The only document needed to apply for the online visa is a passport from an eligible country. The passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond the date of arrival. We accept ordinary and temporary passports.

What are the requirements for the Egypt visa on arrival?

Passengers can avoid queuing for a visa on arrival in Egypt by applying for an eVisa . The Egyptian eVisa is the most convenient option for most eligible visitors.

However, for people travelling to Egypt in the next few days who do not have time to apply for the eVisa , the visa on arrival is a useful option.

Travellers can get an Egypt visa on arrival from one of the kiosks at any of the airport terminals. The visa fee must be paid in cash (credit and debit cards are not accepted).

Applicants receive a visa sticker which they present at the immigration desks to gain entry. The visa on arrival allows visitors to stay for up to 30 days . Only single-entry visas are available on arrival.
