A Small Town In Texas Is Home To One Of The Last Baseball Glove Factories In The U.S.

The Nokona baseball glove factory in the small town of Nocona, Texas, is one of the last remaining baseball glove factories in the U.S.

About 100 miles northwest of Dallas-Fort Worth, past pastures of crops and cattle, sits Nocona, Texas, population 3,000, home to the Nokona baseball glove factory, one of the last baseball glove factories in the United States.

Inside, there are stacks of tanned and dyed kangaroo, buffalo and calfskins piled at one end of the 20,000-square-foot one-story shop. "We literally bring leather in through one door and magically, ball gloves come out the door at the very end," says Rob Storey, Nokona's executive vice president.

"That, and about 45 labor operations, and you've got a ball glove."

Storey should know — this is the family business. To survive the Depression, his grandfather, Bob Storey, added baseball gloves to the family's line of leather goods in 1934. Since then, just about every U.S. competitor has moved production overseas.

Grandfather Bob, who died in 1980, said he would rather quit and go fishing than import Nokonas.

Rob Storey says that these days, being the nation's only baseball glove maker in continuous operation for 85 years gives Nokona a competitive advantage: "Because we have people that understand the game of baseball. Our competitors are making them in factories. [In] a lot of those factories, people have never even seen a baseball game or know what it is. Sure, it would be easy to go over there and do something. But that's not who we are. We're not about easy."

Nokona and its 75 employees make, market and sell their mostly handmade gloves in the town with same name. The brand honors Comanche Chief Peta Nocona . The company couldn't legally use the city's spelling, so Storey's grandfather changed the c to a k, and it's been spelled that way ever since.

At about the midway spot on the factory floor, Martin Gomez is busy turning gloves, something he has done for 19 years. It's a big deal because every glove is first sewn inside-out, and Gomez is considered a master.

Martin Gomez has worked at Nokona for 19 years. He is considered a master at making these baseball gloves.

"It's not that hard," says Gomez. "It takes time to learn, to get used to. Like the first time you start to work, it gave me a blister all over my hands, but you get used to it."

Storey says Gomez is modest. If he's not careful, he can tear the leather and hand-stitching. Fast, practiced, yet efficient, Gomez slides a rod in each inside-out finger, pushes it hard against a wooden dowel and turns each leather finger back the right way.

First, he sprays leather softener on the inside-out glove. Then, says Storey, he heats it on a 250-degree metal form.

"It's very critical to do that," says Storey, "so that you don't rip out any of the seams while we're going through this process, because this process in some ways is more difficult on the glove than the game of baseball."

The game of baseball, after all, is what Nokonas are all about, even if the brand is not nearly as well-known as sporting goods giants like Rawlings or Wilson. In the youth market, though, it's big.

"I grew up using a Nokona glove," recalls major league pitcher Robby Scott. "My first glove that I ever really remember was a first baseman's mitt that was a Nokona."

We first talked to Arizona relief pitcher Scott between World Series games last year when he was with the Red Sox — the Sox would go on to win the Series. Scott says there's just something special about Nokona: "I will never wear a different glove," he says. "It's a special bond I have with them. They could have 200 players wearing their gloves. But to me it seems special because they make it seem like I'm the only one."

And, says Storey, Nokona is the only maker he knows of that will refurbish its old, tattered gloves.

He says that doesn't happen with gloves made overseas.

Nokona Baseball Glove Factory Tour, Nocona

baseball glove tour

As the first buds are bursting from the trees in North Texas, I’m already feeling Spring in the air, and with Spring comes baseball!  Anxious to hear the crack of the bat, my eight-year-old son and I traveled to the Nokona Baseball Glove Factory in the small town of Nocona, near the Red River, to watch as they produce the only baseball glove still made in America!

CIMG0159

Know Before You Go

Tours are offered every Monday and Friday at 10:30am and 1:30pm, with the exception of some holidays.  Call and confirm before going.

You can order a glove before the tour, or bring a glove from home to have your name laser-engraved on it.

My son, at 8, was completely intrigued the entire time.  Because it is a factory, and some items are hot and potentially unsafe for small hands, I wouldn’t recommend for children much younger than him.

One of my favorite items was the FIRST gloves, little blue and pink gloves that had the baby’s name and date of birth stitched on the inside!   Stitching like this is a special order item, and can only be done before the glove is assembled.

Videos About Nokona

Under the impression that the tour started at 10am, we arrived in town a few minutes late, and I was quite relieved to find out that the tour actually began at 10:30, making me….. early.  It had to happen eventually.

While we waited, we watched several videos about Nokona Baseball Gloves, includeing an interview from Nolan Ryan, who described his VERY first baseball glove, a Nokona!

During the tour, we saw many very old gloves that had been sent to the factory for repairs.

Nokona is a small factory of only about 20 employees, and during our tour of the factory, we met every one of them.  The factory felt like a family, with many having worked there 30 years or more, and our tour guide over 50 years!

CIMG0156

A Brief History

Our tour began with a history of Nokona Sporting Equipment, which opened in the 1930’s.  If you noticed that the factory’s spelling is different than the town’s spelling of Nocona, it’s because the town had a law against any business using the town’s name.

The town is named after Peta Nocona, the Cherokee chief and father of Quanah Parker.  To learn more about Nocona and Quanah Parker, click HERE to read about Old Fort Parker.

CIMG0163

Nokona’s First Glove

Inside the display cases, there were a progression of old baseball and softball gloves, but none so old as this one.  One of their very first gloves ever produced, these gloves were used by baseball players not so much to catch the ball, but as to just knock it out of the air, then scoop it up and throw it!

If you love the history of baseball, check out the Texas Vintage Base Ball League.  There are seven Vintage Base Ball teams which play at special events around the state.  Click HERE to visit their website.

The Farmers Branch Mustangs hold an annual Vintage Baseball Festival each April, click HERE to visit their facebook page for more information.

CIMG0176

Leather and Lace

Our first stop inside the factory was to see all the leather that is used to make the gloves!  Nokona uses cow, buffalo and even kangaroo leather, and we were able to feel samples of all 3!  They also have different color leather laces for the gloves for special orders!

CIMG0166

While photos aren’t allowed back in the factory during the tour, they did allow us a few.  We watched as they cut the glove pieces, stamped them and sewed the pieces together.  This glove has just been turned right-side out and stretched!

CIMG0174

Some of the final products, awaiting 2 of the quality control inspections!

CIMG0158

After our tour, we spent time looking around the store.  In addition to new gloves, they sell shirts, hats and other Nokona items!  If you purchase a new glove, pre-made glove at the factory, they can have your name laser-engraved for you!

More to Do in Nocona

After our tour, we had a great time walking around Historic Downtown Nocona!  There was much more to see and do, and we had a great time!

In 1879, Daddy Joe Justin came to North Texas and began making boots.  After his death, his son’s moved to Fort Worth to continue his legacy, known as the Justin Boot Company.  His daughter, Enid Justin, stayed in Nocona and also wanted to continue her father’s work, opening the Nocona Boot Company in 1925, which continued to make quality boots in Nocona until they were purchased by Justin Industries, parent company of Justin Boots, in 1981.  The Nocona Boot Factory was closed in 1999, but it’s still a great building, just waiting on someone to come make a museum out of it!  It appeared one end was used to sell antiques during our visit.

Fengolio is another prominent name in the town of Nocona.  Fengolio began making boots after the closing of the factory, and today turn out the James Montague Handmade Boot Line.  Click HERE to read more.

Speaking of Fengolio, you’ll have to leave Downtown Nocona for a short drive to Fengolio BBQ, and don’t miss getting a Bowl of Crap.  Homemade beans, brisket, sausage, it’s definitely yummier than it’s name!  Click HERE to see their facebook page!

Before leaving Nocona, my son and I took a few minutes to hunt down a geocache just a short walk from the Nokona Baseball Glove Factory at the First United Methodist Church.  It was a lovely church that we would have overlooked had we not been searching for the geocache.  If geocaching is new to you, it’s a fun and free activity, great for all ages!  Please read more at geocaching.com, and click HERE to visit their website.

How Should a Baseball Glove Close? Things to Know!

A. Coatess

FACT-CHECKED BY

Sean Hunter

how should a baseball glove close

You get your baseball equipment ready, and at last, you can finally use them during your first day in training!

However, there seems to be a problem – why is it hard to use the baseball glove? There is a trick on how should a baseball glove close.

The glove should feel tight, be the correct size, and be evenly thick. To achieve this, you need to break into the glove correctly, along with other similar tricks.

The Importance of Closing a Baseball Glove

How the glove should feel when closed, 1. break in a baseball glove, 2. apply glove conditioners, 3. improve your strength.

The-Importance-of-closing-a-baseball-glove

Baseball athletes are surely aware of the difference it makes when they have the correct glove on when they play.

A glove or mitt is worn by the defending team, and its large leather build helps the player catch balls thrown by the batter or a teammate.

Normally, the baseball glove is worn over the non-dominant hand. A right-handed player wears a glove over his left, and the other way around for left-handed players.

So, how is the glove supposed to fit a player ?

To be efficient and comfortable in playing, players should be able to close their baseball gloves when they need to.

A closed baseball glove means that your hand can wrap around the baseball as you catch them. The fingers and palm of the glove should meet. With this form, the design of the glove will trap the ball, hence, securing the catch.

The form a baseball glove gives to the player allows it to increase their chances of securing a catch. And closing in a glove is important to help them latch on better to the baseball.

How-the-Glove-Should-Feel-When-Closed

Long-time players know the difference between a new and stiff glove versus an old and closed glove.

First, the glove must feel tight around the hand. There is a strap at the back to help you adjust it if it is too loose. Essentially, a closed glove has the right snug fit, which also helps it stay in place.

Moreover, a glove with the correct size must have an even thickness. The presence of lumps would be a problem and will interfere with closing it during catches.

Your fingers must have adequate control over closing the glove. So, it is also essential to have the correct size for your hands . A large glove will be difficult to close as the fingers are not enough to shape a baseball glove.

On the other hand, a small glove will leave almost no room for your fingers to move and close when needed.

How to Close a Baseball Glove

Whenever you need to use a baseball glove, you must be accustomed to how it should feel. However, you would not always get gloves that close perfectly. A common problem with playing using a new glove is its stiffness and difficulty in closing.

You need to find ways to loosen up a baseball glove, and here is how:

Break-in-a-Baseball-Glove

The most recommended way to allow gloves to close properly is to break into them . There are a bunch of specific techniques to make it work, but essentially, it works by safely softening the stiff leather of a new glove.

As the material softens, you can close the glove more easily and with less effort. If you are not in a rush, you can naturally break in the glove by playing with it a lot during practice until the leather softens.

You also can break in your baseball glove in the oven, check how now!

Apply-Glove-Conditioners

To accelerate the softening of the glove’s leather, you can smother it with a glove conditioner . All you need to do is dispense a small amount of the conditioner on a clean rag and gently massage it on every surface of the glove.

Improve-Your-Strength

Since your fingers will be inside the gloves, do not forget to improve your finger strength! During training or your daily routine, you can add a bit of muscle training.

Even with adequately breaking into your glove, you will still fail to close it properly in every catch if you lack finger strength.

If you put effort into breaking into your baseball glove, you can effortlessly close it properly during games!

Do not worry if you have a stiff glove with you because this article taught you how should a baseball glove close.

Closing a glove is important if you want to improve your catching skills! Ensure that you break into the glove to soften the leather, making it easy to close it.

So, with a bit of practice and patience, you can make your glove perfect and bring you closer to victorious games.

Willie-Smith

A powerful swing and the ball is flying across the field, just one hit, and we might never forget the thrill it brings. I do not know about you, but I never do. Every baseball game is the chance to compete with others and cooperate with your teammate. It is among my biggest passions.

The sprawling, mind-boggling metropolis of Russian Moscow has long been one of the theatrical stages on which the great dramas of Europe and Asia have been played out in grand style. Burned by Napoleon in 1812, immortalised by Tolstoy, utilised by the Bolsheviks and championed as a bastion of heroic defiance by the post-war communists, it’s almost hard to believe just how defining the historical events that found their home on Moscow’s streets have been. Moscow tour guides will easily be able to mark the major must-see landmarks on the map, from the onion-domed orthodox Saint Basil's Cathedral, to the political powerhouse of Red Square just next door, while others will be quick to recommend a ride on Moscow’s famous subterranean metro system, or a visit to the UNESCO-attested Novodevichy Convent on the city’s southern side. But Moscow is a city also in the throes of a cultural wrangling between the old and the new. Creative energies abound here: Boho bars and pumping super clubs now occupy the iconic mega structures of the old USSR; high-fashion outlets, trendy shopping malls and luxurious residential districts stand as testimony to a city that’s now the undisputed playground of the world’s super-rich, while sprawling modern art museums dominate the cultural offering of the downtown districts north of the Moskva River.
