The Best Things To Do in Trujillo, Peru
Trujillo is one of northern Peru’s premier cities for travelers to visit. A coastal city with incredible food, ancient ruins, and endless sun and surf make it an extremely attractive destination for all types of travelers. There is an incredibly diverse range of things to do in Trujillo. Whatever your taste may be, Trujillo has got something for you.
Visit Huaca de la Luna y Huaca del Sol
Let’s start with my favorite thing that I did while I was in the area. Peru is best known for its Incan ruins, and oftentimes, the other millennia of Peru’s history get overshadowed by the Incan history. For example, how many of you have heard of the Moche civilization that pre-dated the Inca? They were around for hundreds and hundreds of years, thriving with complex societies, towering pyramids, and a culture where arts and tradition thrived.
I didn’t hear about the Moche until I actually arrived at the entrance to Huaca de la Luna. These two pyramids were known as the temples of the sun and moon. They flanked the city of Moche on both sides, about 30 minutes away from modern-day Trujillo. I found myself stuck in Trujillo for another day after a night out caused me to miss my desired departure for the bus to Huaraz. So to me, visiting Huacas de la Luna y del Sol was meant to be nothing more than a time-killer.
But like I said, it turned out to be my favorite adventure in Trujillo. While we couldn’t visit the Huaca del Sol, we were able to take an extensive tour of Huaca de la Luna. It kept getting more and more impressive, capped off by seeing the still-painted exterior of the several-story-tall pyramid. It was absolutely incredible to see, and it was a one-of-kind experience that I was not expecting to have when I woke up that morning.
To get here, you can take a taxi from the city center for about 15 soles ($4 US) or take a colectivo or bus for about 2 soles from Trujillo.
Explore the Ruins of Chan Chan Archaeological Site
Perhaps the most famous of the archaeological sites near Trujillo, the city of Chan Chan is an extensive archaeological site between Trujillo and Huanchaco. It feels like walking through another world, one that you would have never expected to find in Peru. As we walked through the towering adobe walls and through the sandy remains of the massive city, it almost felt like we were taking a stroll through ancient Egypt.
We only got to explore a fraction of the site, as so much of it is yet to be uncovered and excavated. Seeing a model of the city at the museum gave a glimpse at just how massive this city was, and how little of it has yet to be unearthed. Chan Chan should be one of your first priorities when arriving in Trujillo.
It costs about 1.50 soles to get there from Trujillo or from Huanchaco and then entrance is another 10 soles. If you went by bus, you’ll have to get off on the main road and walk about half a kilometer to the entrance of the site. However, that long walk can go by pretty quickly as you are surrounded by the ruins of the ancient city as you walk. If you want to hire a guide, you will have to pay 50 soles per group. Depending on the size of your group, this could be a lot or it could be negligible. Between 4 of us, the 12 soles fee for a guide was well worth knowing what it was that we were seeing.
Where To Stay in Trujillo, Peru
Explore Huaca Esmeraldas and Huaca Arcoiris
Included with your ticket to Chan Chan is entrance to two other sites as well as the museum for Chan Chan. The museum is about a kilometer from the entrance of Chan Chan and can be walked if you just follow the main road to Trujillo. However, the other two sites are a bit harder to get to as they are further from the city center. You can take a taxi to the sites if you really want to visit them.
Be warned, though. The sites close at 4 PM, which put a damper on our day as we only found that at around 3:40 PM after we had already walked the majority of the way to Huaca Esmeraldas. Since the entrance is included in the 10 soles fee for Chan Chan, it is still worth considering going if you want to indulge a bit more in the history of the area.
Go For A Surf At Huanchaco
About 45 minutes from Trujillo is the backpacker haven of Huanchaco. It is a popular spot for surfers, yoga enthusiasts, or backpackers just looking to find a spot to settle away from the hustle and bustle of Trujillo. I spent nearly a week in Huanchaco, filling my days with idle time and beach sunsets.
The surf in Huanchaco is among the best that you will find in Peru. Huanchaco is also widely considered to be one of the birthplaces of surf, with the reed boats used by the fishermen of the past believed to be among the first ever surf vessels. My first surf in Huanchaco was my first time surfing in nearly a month, so despite the quickly fatigued arms, I still had a blast. The beach is quite rocky but the waves are constant and it is a perfect spot for surfers of all skill levels. As a beginner, I found it really easy to catch waves. And for more experienced surfers… Let’s just say Huanchaco was hosting a surf competition the weekend that I left town.
So yeah, it’s a pretty good place for surfers of all levels.
And before you go, make sure you have good travel insurance handy while you’re off adventuring across the world. I use SafetyWing to keep me covered throughout my travels for as low as $40 a month.
Take A Ride On A Caballito de Totora
Keen to find out a bit more on why Huanchaco is considered the birthplace of surfing? If you’ve visited Huanchaco, then there’s no doubt you’ve seen those reed boats lining the beach. It’s one of Huanchaco and Trujillo’s many claims to fame, and you’ll undoubtedly hear it or see it mentioned over and over again.
Well, you can actually go out with the fishermen and ride on the boats with them for a while. They’ll show you how the boats are made, then take you out to sea for a bit of fishing before riding the waves back to shore. It will cost you about 120 soles ($35) for a four-hour adventure. That might seem a bit steep, especially for backpackers on a budget, but it definitely isn’t every day that you can say you’ve done something like that.

Visit El Brujo Archaeological Site
I didn’t actually have time to visit El Brujo, but from what I’ve heard, it is another can’t-miss archaeological site within the area. It is a bit further out located in the Chicama Valley over an hour away from Trujillo. The complex is also very large, boasting three main Huacas. One of those huacas, Cao Viejo, is famous for having the earliest known remains of a female ruler in Peru. The Lady of Cao is estimated to have lived in the early to mid 400s before dying in her mid-twenties due to childbirth or pregnancy complications.
Roam Around The Plaza de Armas
Trujillo’s Plaza de Armas is one of my favorites in all of Peru. It is unique with its gigantic statue in the center of the plaza that takes up the spot usually filled by a fountain or some other less magnificent structure. The area surrounding the Plaza de Armas is an amazing neighborhood to wander around. I personally wasn’t a fan of the chaos and congestion of Trujillo outside of the Plaza de Armas so I admittedly stuck around this area. There are plenty of churches, historical buildings, and significant areas for the history-lover willing to do their research.
The central market is also just two blocks from the Plaza de Armas where you can feast on as much food as you could hope for. Oh, and unlike most parts of South America, the menu del dia’s often offered…
Feast On Some Ceviche
Ceviche! Huanchaco is considered to be the birthplace of Peru’s most famous dish. And it is everywhere. And it never gets old. The best part of Trujillo for me was that ceviche was a staple with every meal. Where most other parts of South America only offer soup as the starter for their lunch combinations, Trujillo offered a generous portion of ceviche.
Another combination to consider is the trio marinero often offered by many restaurants around lunchtime. This usually includes three options for a price of about 10 soles. You’ll get ceviche, arroz con mariscos, and chicharron de pescado. For the seafood lover, this is heaven for $3.

Take A Surf Trip Up To Chicama
For surfers who haven’t gotten their fill in Huanchaco, then Chicama might be the spot to be. Chicama is world-famous for boasting some of the longest waves in the world. If you get lucky and catch the right wave, you might be riding that thing for nearly two kilometers. The waves in Chicama are the stuff of legends, and at just over an hour from Trujillo, it is well worth the visit for surf lovers staying in the area.

Living in Cornwall UK surfing is the number one activity. Great to know it is popular in Peru too. I must say the pyramid with the story up the walls sounds incredible, though I might need someone to translate the stories!

I am really amaze on how ancient people create such beautiful cities without heavy equipment or machines to help them.
It all looks amazing out there. But I think I would be caught up amongst the ruins. Just to see the history of the place. I love digging and finding about the past and what happened and those ruins would be an amazing place to start.
The history here is mind blowing! So many civilizations and cultures that are much older than the ones we are familiar with.
These are great tips to consider when traveling to Peru. So many historic places to visit.

History of Trujillo
Trujillo is one of the oldest colonial cities in Peru. When the “Conquistador” Francisco Pizarro arrived onto the Peruvian shore one of his first actions was to conquer as much territory as he possibly could.
Francisco Pizarro learned that the Incan empire had recently made a conquest of their own, The people of Chimu. After considering this recent event, Pizarro decided to form an alliance with the Chimu and they, in turn, allowed him to build a major city on their land.
To build the city, Pizarro sent one of his most trusted conquistadors called Diego de Almagro. The newly built town would be located near the Chimu capital city of Chan Chan. It was decided to name the town “Trujillo” after the birthplace of Pizarro, Trujillo Spain.
After many years of Spanish rule, the city of Trujillo declared independence in the year 1820 and was the first Peruvian city to do this. Due to this very event, Trujillo became the capital city of the Libertad department in 1825.
Trujillo’s “Plaza de Armas” or Main Square, you will find the Freedom Monument at the center. This is a sculpture that was enacted to show the struggle for independence Peru went through. It was made by a German artist called Edmund Moeller.

Whether you're a history fan eager to explore the mystical ruins of Machu Picchu, an adventure seeker ready to hike the Inca Trail, or a nature lover yearning to discover the wonders of the Amazon rainforest - Peru has it all! But beyond these awesome attractions, Peru offers a unique opportunity for volunteering. Through Workaway, you can immerse yourself in local communities, make a meaningful impact, and create unforgettable memories. If you crave an adventure like no other, here’s everything you need to know about Peru.
Peru at a Glance
As the third largest country in South America, Peru borders Ecuador and Colombia to the north, Chile to the south, Brazil and Bolivia to the east, and the Pacific Ocean to the west. Some would argue there are two main reasons nearly four million people flock to Peru each year – to hike and to eat! As a bonus it also happens to be one of the cheapest countries in South America !
It is a country of contrasts; from the towering Andes to the lush Amazon rainforest. The capital city, Lima , is home to over 10 million people and is known for its stunning colonial architecture and incredible foodie scene. The country boasts a rich cultural heritage, with a mix of indigenous and Spanish influences.
If there’s one thing you’ve heard about Peru, it’s likely the ancient Incan city of Machu Picchu, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the Seven Wonders of the World. In addition to Machu Picchu, Peru is also home to many other fascinating archaeological sites, such as the Nazca Lines and the Chan Chan ruins.
If you're looking for an adventure, Peru is the place to go. It is also home to Lake Titicaca, one of South America's largest lakes and the world’s highest navigable body of water. As well as the Colca Canyon, one of the deepest canyons on the planet. You can hike the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, go white-water rafting on the Urubamba River, or trek through the Amazon jungle.
Then when you're ready to relax, indulge in the country’s famous food, which is a fusion of indigenous and European flavours. You cannot leave the country without trying ceviche, a delicious blend of fresh seafood marinated in citrus juices and spices. Another must-try delicacy is roasted guinea pig (yup, guinea pig!) known as cuy, which is deeply rooted in Peruvian tradition.
Although Peru is a country full of natural wonders, fascinating history, and adventure, that's still not the best part. The best part is with nearly 300 Workaway hosts in Peru , it could not be easier to live like a local and explore this epic destination first hand!
Reasons to volunteer in Peru
- Immerse yourself in the vibrant culture: By volunteering in Peru, you'll have the opportunity to immerse yourself in the community, learn about their traditions, and make meaningful connections with local people. You'll leave with a deeper appreciation and understanding of Peruvian culture that you wouldn't get from just passing through as a tourist.
- Make a positive impact: By volunteering in Peru, you have the opportunity to contribute to meaningful projects that address important issues such as education, healthcare, environmental conservation, and community development. You'll be part of initiatives that aim to make a real difference in the lives of local communities - all without expensive agency fees !
- Learn Spanish: Peru is a fantastic destination to learn or improve your Spanish skills. Volunteering is one of the best ways to learn a language . This is because you’ll be communicating with locals, navigating daily life, and working on projects. All of which will open doors to new friendships and opportunities.
- Explore stunning landscapes: With epic landscapes on your doorstep, there is so much fun to be had when the work is done. Volunteering provides a chance to venture off the beaten path, hike ancient trails, spot exotic wildlife, and soak in the natural wonders that make Peru truly incredible.

Volunteering offers a unique opportunity to connect with locals, share stories, learn from their wisdom, and create lasting bonds with the incredibly welcoming people of Peru.
Is Peru safe to visit?
When it comes to safety, Peru is generally considered a safe country for travellers. Popular tourist areas like Cusco, Machu Picchu, Lima, and the Sacred Valley have a strong security presence, ensuring the well-being of visitors.
However, as with any travel destination, it's important to exercise caution and be mindful of your surroundings. Petty theft and pickpocketing can occur, particularly in crowded areas or public transport, so always keep your belongings secure and avoid carrying large sums of cash. To stay safe, it’s also recommended to only use registered taxis (especially for women travelling solo ) and avoid walking alone at night. Follow our safety tips , especially if travelling solo and always stay vigilant. By using common-sense and staying informed about local conditions, you can have a safe and enjoyable experience exploring the wonders of Peru. Finally, as always, don't forget travel insurance ! Not only will it cover you from lost or stolen belongings, but it can also cover medical costs, cancelled flights and more.
As a tip, altitude sickness will probably be your biggest safety concern when travelling in Peru. If you plan on hiking, you will need to make sure your travel insurance will cover you. Many cheaper policies exclude coverage for hiking above 2,500m - 3,000m so double check you’ve found a good policy before you sign up!
Regional Highlights of Peru
Now you’re armed with reasons to visit and our top safety tips, it’s time to plan where to go. Peru is divided politically into 24 departments but geographically into three regions. These regions are known as Costa (coast), Sierra (highlands) and Selva (jungle).
The Costa region is located to the west and is mainly arid. This is where you’ll find the capital city of Lima. The Sierra region is home to Andes and includes the Altiplano plateau as well as the highest peak in the country, Huascarán at 6,768 m (22,205 ft.) Selva, the third region is mainly flat terrain covered by the Amazon rainforest. In fact, almost 60 percent of the country’s area is located within this region! Each region has its own unique characteristics, which we’ve summarised to help inspire your perfect Peruvian adventure…
As the smallest of the three regions, Costa covers only 12 percent of the country’s land but contains around 53 percent of the population. This is where you’ll find the capital city Lima which is considered the gateway to Peru for many travellers. While most of the region is desert, there is still so much to see and do. A few highlights include:
Regional Highlights of Costa
- Lima: Step back in time and wander through the narrow streets of the Historic Centre of Lima, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Here you'll find magnificent colonial architecture and ancient churches. Then head for the trendy, bohemian vibes of Miraflores and Barranco. Here you can stroll along the scenic coastal cliffs, visit art galleries, enjoy the bustling nightlife, and indulge in delicious Peruvian foodie finds. Sounds good? Check out Workaway hosts in Lima .
- Huacachina Oasis: Located around five kilometres from the city of Ica and 5 hours from Lima, the Huacachina Oasis is a stunning natural oasis in the middle of the desert. Home to the largest sand dunes in South America, it is an incredibly unique destination that is Peru's fastest growing destination,.You can admire the Sahara-like sand dunes, relax on the lagoon or even enjoy sand buggy or sand boarding rides.
- Paracas National Reserve: Nature lovers will adore The Paracas National Reserve. It is a protected area on the coast that’s home to a variety of wildlife, including sea lions, penguins, and dolphins. It's a great place to take a boat tour and explore the dramatic cliffs and pristine beaches.
This region is home to the Andes mountains, one of the most iconic features of Peru as they offer some of the most spectacular scenery in the country. Some of the world's highest mountains can be found here, like the Huascaran (6768 m) and the Yerupaja (6634 m). This region is also where you can learn about the ancient Inca heritage through landmarks such as Machu Picchu and the Sacred Valley.
Regional Highlights of La Sierra
- Machu Picchu: No trip to Peru would be complete without a visit to Machu Picchu. This ancient Inca citadel is one of the most famous landmarks in South America. There are a number of routes to choose from along the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. The route you opt for will depend on your fitness, budget and time allowance. The Classic Inca Trail route is a moderate 26 mile hike. On average it takes 4 days to complete, while reaching a maximum elevation of 13,828 feet (4,215 metres).
- Cusco and The Sacred Valley: The city of Cusco is famous for its spectacular main square, cobbled streets, and terracotta tiled houses that will remind you of European villages. If you’re travelling on a budget, the best way to explore the city’s world famous architecture is with a free walking tour . Look out for the red T-shirts of the tour guide at Portal de Carnes, Cusco 08002 . They offer tours in English and Spanish every day at 9:45 am, 12:30 pm, and 3:00 pm. The Sacred Valley is the region surrounding Cusco, and it's home to a number of Inca ruins and traditional villages. It's a great place to explore on foot or by bike. As a tip, it’s best to visit Cusco and the Sacred Valley right before peak season in April – May or just after peak season in September or October before the rainy season. The weather is still good during these times but you’ll avoid the crowds! Check out hosts in Cusco here.
- Rainbow Mountain: Rainbow Mountain is a stunning natural wonder in the Andes that's become increasingly popular in recent years (thanks, Instagram!) It was actually hidden under thick layers of snow and ice until 2015, so visiting here is still relatively new. The colourful stripes on the mountain are caused by mineral deposits and can look a different colour depending on the time of day or year. The trail to Rainbow Mountain starts just outside the town of Pitumarca, making it a 2-hour drive from Cusco. Altitude sickness is a big issue for those visiting Rainbow Mountain, so while the views are breathtaking it's recommended to only spend 20-30 minutes at the top.
- Colca Canyon: Fun fact, although it’s not nearly as world-famous as the Grand Canyon in the USA, the Colca Canyon is twice as deep, making it the deepest canyon on earth! It is also home to the Andean condor, one of the largest birds in the world. As well as the breathtaking views, here you can enjoy rafting, climbing and trekking. You will also find many other typical highland animals including alpacas, vizcachas and pumas.
The Amazon rainforest is one of the most biodiverse regions on earth, and it's home to a staggering array of wildlife and plant life. Whether you’re an eco-warrior wanting to spread the word on sustainability, or fancy trialling an off grid lifestyle with a remote community, the selva region offers a unique destination to volunteer in Peru.
- Manu National Park: As one of the most biodiverse areas on Earth, Manu National Park boasts an incredible array of plant and animal species. It is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a Biosphere Reserve, protecting over 1.5 million hectares of pristine rainforest, cloud forest, and Andean landscapes. Here you will find iconic wildlife species such as jaguars, giant otters, tapirs, macaws, and an incredible variety of monkeys, making it a paradise for nature enthusiasts and wildlife lovers!
- Iquitos: Iquitos is the largest city in the world that's inaccessible by road. This means you can only reach it via air or waterways. It is a unique blend of urban civilization and untamed natural beauty so is a great place to base yourself for exploring the Amazon in Peru . It's a vibrant and bustling city renowned for its markets where you can purchase traditional crafts and exotic fruits as well as book wildlife excursions or tours. Check out hosts in Iquitos here.
- Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve: As a protected area in the Amazon it is home to more than 1,400 plant species, 449 bird species, 102 mammal species, and numerous reptiles, amphibians, and fish. This includes iconic Amazonian creatures such as pink river dolphins and giant river otters. It covers an extensive area of approximately 20,800 square kilometres (8,000 square miles). The Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve is particularly unique due to its flooded forest ecosystem. This means during the rainy season, large areas of the reserve become submerged under water. This creates a unique habitat for wildlife as well as stunning landscapes of winding waterways and mirrored reflections, promising an unforgettable visit!
- Tambopata National Reserve: The Tambopata National Reserve is another protected area in the Amazon that's home to a huge variety of wildlife. It is particularly famous for the unique phenomenon known as “macaw clay licks.” This is where vibrant macaws and parrots gather to feed on the mineral-rich clay. This creates a spectacular display of colourful birds, making it a must-visit attraction for nature lovers and bird enthusiasts. Additionally, the reserve offers opportunities for jungle trekking, riverboat tours, and cultural encounters with local indigenous communities, providing an immersive experience in the Amazon rainforest.

Volunteers can support wildlife conservation, permaculture projects or eco-tourism initiatives as well as help to educate local communities on sustainable practices.

Jobs in Peru
Home to the ancient Inca empire, comfortably settled at the northern tip of South America, bordering the Pacific Ocean, and one of the most biodiverse countries in the world, Peru can be a dream place to work abroad for ambitious individuals from all over the world. Whether settling in the high altitudes of the Andes or the lowlands of the Amazon basin, this beautiful Spanish-speaking country will provide an exciting challenge for foreigners interested in living and working abroad in one of the world’s most beautiful regions.
Lima , the capital and by the far country’s largest city with nearly 9 million people, will be the obvious choice of residence for many individuals who begin looking for work in Peru. Lima is the third largest city proper in the Americas and has been an important vein in South America since its establishment nearly 500 years ago. The financial and industrial center of the country, many foreign workers who find themselves working in Lima’s internationally connected sectors will find much enjoyment living in this fascinating and fun city, settled in the coastal plains of Peru.
Other popular cities for jobs in Peru include Arequipa , Trujillo , and Cusco . Arequipa and Trujillo are the country’s second and third largest cities, respectively. Both offer beautiful architecture and great historical intrigue to complement a fun and vibrant city environment. Cusco, the capital of the former Incan empire, is a very popular destination for travellers from all over the world, and offers great job opportunities in the tourism industry. It is also the launching point for many individuals who are preparing to embark on trips to Machu Picchu.
Of course, individuals who want to work in Peru will not be limited to city life by any means. A large and diverse country, certain job opportunities in Peru, such as teaching English, will place expats in a smaller rural location. The terrain of the country varies heavily between regions and living at high altitudes can be quite the (literal) headache, so do your research carefully before signing on to determine which location seems like the best landing spot for your job in Peru.
The most commonly available job in Peru is teaching English or other subjects at local schools or for a private company. Native speakers with a TEFL certificate will especially have no problem finding teaching jobs in Peru, and ESL teachers will often have a tremendous degree of flexibility in determining their choice of location and length of stay. Jobs in Peru in translating, between English and Spanish, are also somewhat easy to find across the country.
Many international organizations and companies have branches in Lima so it is also possible that you may be relocated to Peru, or have the option to, if working in a such a company back at home. Obviously finding jobs in Peru with such organizations will depend on your resume, prior work experience, and career interests, but it is very much possible to begin an international career in Peru if you wish to do so.
Starting your own business in the tourism industry in Peru is also an intriguing option, though this requires a lot of hard work to get off of the ground. Mining and agriculture make up a large part of the Peruvian economy, so these are other large and fruitful industries in which to search for potential employment in Peru.
It is generally necessary to speak Spanish in order to work in Peru in most industries and positions, so if you’re planning to travel to Peru with only a few years of High School instruction under your belt, you may want to start brushing up on your language skills a bit more.
Peru is a developing country, so expect your salary to reflect this fact. Most workers earn what is equivalent to just a few hundred dollars a month working in Peru. However teaching job opportunities in Peru will often pay upwards of $1,500, depending on your qualifications and experience. Obviously salaries will vary greatly between different fields of work in Peru, as in every country.
The good news is that it is very possible to live comfortably while spending only around $500 a month while working in Peru, so there is a good chance you can also save up some money. The local currency is the Nuevo Sol, which hovers around three PEN to one USD.
The type of accommodation you will be able to find varies with the region you are working in. In Lima, for example, you will be able to land anything from a cheap residential apartment for $100 a month to a luxurious penthouse for $2,000 a month. In smaller cities or in rural areas the living conditions will be more basic, and you may find yourself without, say, hot water or working Wi-Fi. Contact your host employer early on about living options to find what will work best for you.
The type of visa needed to work abroad in Peru varies by the length of the position and the type of employment you obtain. Tourist visas are often sufficient for short, temporary employment, business visas are often required for longer duration jobs, and you may even need a residential visa if you plan on settling permanently in Peru. Visa policies also vary based on your home country.
Working abroad anywhere in the world can be a fun and exciting, but at times being an expat can be a challenge too.
In Peru, you will have the rare opportunity to engage with a culture that is all at once historically fascinating, artistically vibrant, and rapidly modernizing. You will also have the chance to perfect your Spanish speaking abilities in one of the most geographically beautiful and diverse countries in the world, and check out the stunning visions of Machu Picchu while you’re at it.
Simply put – working abroad in Peru will be the experience of a lifetime, and you will not regret it.

Stand in the right spot and the glamorous streets of old Trujillo look like they’ve barely changed in hundreds of years. Well, there are more honking taxis now, but the city still manages to put on a dashing show with its polychrome buildings and profusion of colonial-era churches. Most people come here to visit the remarkable pre-Incan archaeological sites nearby, spending just a short time wandering the compact city center.
