TABLE OF CONTENTS

‍ Overview of the Trek 3500 Mountain Bike

The Trek 3500 mountain bike is a popular entry-level choice for those who want a good bike without breaking the bank. It's designed with the beginner rider in mind and offers a comfortable and enjoyable ride on various surfaces, including local trails and gravel paths.

One of the most notable features of the Trek 3500 is the Alpha Silver Aluminum frame, which provides a lightweight yet sturdy build that's suitable for tackling your first trail rides.

Additionally, the bike is equipped with an SR Suntour suspension fork, which helps to smooth out the ride and absorb bumps along the way. This is particularly beneficial for those new to mountain biking who may be more sensitive to trail conditions.

So, let’s look closer at the key Trek 3500 features to help decide whether it’s worth the investment.

Key Features of Trek 3500 Mountain Bike

The Trek 3500's drivetrain and components are built around dependability and ease of use. Shimano TZ31 front and rear derailleurs, combined with a wide range of gears, make it simple for beginners to navigate varied terrain without feeling overwhelmed.

Regarding braking, the bike utilizes linear-pull brakes, which are well-suited for new riders as they are easy to control and maintain. Overall, the Trek 3500 mountain bike is a great bike, and here’s why.

Frame and Suspension

The Trek 3500 mountain bike is built with an Alpha Silver Aluminum frame that's suitable for beginners. This lightweight frame offers great stability and durability. Its semi-integrated head tube helps make the bike more comfortable to ride.

The bike has an SR Suntour suspension fork, ensuring a smooth ride on various terrains.

Gears and Brakes

This mountain bike is equipped with Shimano components for seamless gear shifting. The bike's Shimano TZ31 front derailleur and a reliable rear derailleur offer a range of gear combinations, perfect for tackling various trail conditions.

The Trek 3500 features linear-pull brakes that offer strong stopping power and control, ensuring safety on technical trails and during fast descents.

Wheels and Tires

The Trek 3500 mountain bike's wheels are designed for rugged trail riding and enhanced performance. It boasts knobby tires, specifically Bontrager LT3 26x2.0 tires, that provide excellent traction and control on a variety of surfaces such as dirt, gravel, or rocky trails.

Keeping proper tire pressure will enhance the bike's performance, ensuring a smoother and more comfortable ride.

Design and Aesthetics

The design of the Trek 3500 combines style, functionality, and comfort. It features a clean and streamlined geometry, making it an appealing choice for beginners and experienced riders.

The bike's components, such as the Wellgo nylon platform pedals, 25.4mm 30mm rise handlebars, and comfortable Bontrager SSR saddle, make it an enjoyable ride for longer periods on local trails or commutes.

Trek 3500 Mountain Bike Performance

In our experience, the Trek 3500 mountain bike has proven to be great for entry-level mountain biking and trail riding. The Trek 3500 is also suitable for commuting and road bike usage, providing versatility for any type of rider. Let's look at how it does in terms of performance.

When riding on a single-track trail, the Trek 3500 performs well thanks to the knobby tires and solid frame. The bike comes equipped with Bontrager LT3 26x2.0 tires, providing good traction on a variety of surfaces.

However, on more technical trails, you may notice the bike falling behind some other bikes in the same category, partly due to the SR Suntour fork's limitations. For an entry-level mountain bike, the components play a crucial role in the Trek 3500's performance.

Most Trek bikes also feature a Shimano TZ31 front derailleur and rear derailleur, ensuring a reliable gear-shifting experience. The wellgo nylon platform pedals offer a good grip for better control on the trails.

When it comes to stopping power, the Trek 3500 has rim brakes, which might not provide the same level of performance as disc brakes but are still sufficient for beginners. One important aspect to keep an eye on is tire pressure. Maintaining the right pressure can greatly affect the bike's performance.

The Trek 3500 bike comes with a 25.4mm 30mm rise handlebar and a comfy Bontrager SSR seat. This bike is designed with a geometry that allows riders to have a relaxed and enjoyable ride, whether it's a casual commute or a gravel-filled mountain biking adventure.

Pros and Cons of Trek 3500 Mountain Bike

The Trek 3500 is a great entry-level mountain bike that's perfect for those who are new to the sport. One of the key features of this bike is its Alpha Silver Aluminum frame, which is light, durable, and comfortable for trail riding.

Its Bontrager LT3 26x2.0 knobby tires provide excellent traction on various terrains, making it an ideal bike for local trails. The SR Suntour suspension fork absorbs shock from rough surfaces, ensuring a smooth and enjoyable ride.

The Shimano TZ31 front derailleur and Shimano rear derailleur provide a wide range of gears to tackle uphill climbs and downhill descents easily. Additionally, the Wellgo nylon platform pedals are durable.

You also have the Bontrager SSR 25.4mm 30mm rise handlebars, ensuring a comfy and stable ride grip. Overall, it's a good bike for beginner mountain bikers and those looking to enjoy trail riding without breaking the bank.

While the Trek 3500 is a great bike for new riders, it may not be the best choice for more experienced mountain bikers or those looking to tackle technical trails.

The rim brakes on this bike may not provide the same stopping power as hydraulic disc brakes found on higher-end models, especially in wet or muddy conditions.

The Trek 3500 is primarily designed for trail riding and light off-road use, so those seeking a more versatile bike for both road and mountain biking may want to consider other options.

Its entry-level components may also not hold up due to the wear and tear of tackling more challenging trails. More experienced riders may find themselves quickly outgrowing this bike and wanting to upgrade to a better bike in the same category.

That being said, the Trek 3500 still offers a solid ride for beginners and those looking for an affordable option in the world of mountain biking.

How Long Will The Trek 3500 Mountain Bike Last?

The Trek 3500 mountain bike's lifespan depends on factors like usage, maintenance, riding conditions, storage, and accidents. While it's an entry-level bike from a reputable brand, its durability is enhanced by a lifetime warranty on the frame.

With moderate use and proper care, it can last several years. Expect 5-10 years of dependable service for daily commuting or light trail rides. However, rigorous mountain biking might necessitate more frequent component replacements, even if the frame endures.

It's crucial to note that while the frame might be covered, parts like tires, chains, and brake pads will wear over time. Storing the bike in dry conditions and regular maintenance will optimize its longevity.

Verdict: Is the Trek 3500 Mountain Bike Worth Your Money?

It's clear that this is a great bike for entry-level riders and more experienced cyclists alike. Perfect for trail riding, this mountain bike can handle steep climbs and tough single-track trails, making it a versatile option for various terrains.

It offers knobby tires for good grip on dirt, gravel, and rough surfaces, ensuring a smoother ride when tackling technical trails. This bike comes equipped with Shimano TZ31 front and rear derailleurs, providing consistent gear shifting across its 21-speed gear system, even on rocky terrains.

Additionally, the terrain versatility is further complemented by its Bontrager SSR 26x2.0 wheels, a strong frame, and wellgo nylon platform pedals for added comfort and support

The SR Suntour fork on the Trek 3500 Mountain Bike adds to the comfortable ride regardless of the trail conditions. It may not be a high-end mountain bike, but considering its price point, it delivers a solid and enjoyable performance.

Trek 3500 review

A solid option for beginners

T he 3500 isn’t just Trek’s entry-level option, it’s also the company’s cheapest adult bike of any kind. That’s likely to attract buyers just looking for something to get about on, but the 3500 is very much a mountain bike.

Ride & handling: Confidence-inspiring neutral handling

Trek have stuck to tried and tested geometry with the 3500 to good effect – it’s a confident ride with a good blend of stability and agility. The cockpit is a little shorter than some of the competition, which is arguably a little more user-friendly for the beginner but will start to feel cramped as your experience grows.

The 3500 isn’t unduly heavy overall for its price (14.2kg/31.3lb), but somehow feels less lively on the trail than the best of the other bikes at this price. Part of that is down to the generally higher gears, but the Trek also carries a bit more of its weight in its wheels. Because wheels spin, you have to accelerate them round as well as forward, so weight there and in the tyres is more noticeable than in the frame. The rubber rolls fairly easily, which helps.

Frame: Thoughtfully-designed and well finished chassis

Trek definitely win the paintjob prize here, with a classy Matte Candy Orange finish that resembles the anodising found on more expensive bikes. The beauty isn’t just skin-deep, either: the frame underneath is very tidily put together.

There aren’t any constructional gimmicks, just useful things like a flared down tube, slimmed-down head tube and an open-ended gusset beefing up the join between them. At the back is a wishbone seatstay, with rack and mudguard mounts present and correct. All the cables route along the underside of the top tube out of mud’s way and you’ll find two sets of bottle bosses inside the main triangle.

Equipment: Gear range is more suited to off-dirt use

The colour-matched fork is a neat touch, although the fork itself is fairly unexciting. The SR Suntour unit is all-steel, with skinny stanchions, a welded-on brace and simple spring/elastomer internals. It’s heavy, flexible and bouncy but – critically – if you’re not used to a decent suspension fork then you’re unlikely to notice.

The 3500 has a Shimano MegaRange 13-34T freewheel with a big drop down the oversized big sprocket. Up front, Trek have opted for a 28/38/48T setup on the Shimano chainset. That makes all the gears rather high, which is a mixed blessing. On the downside, steep climbs are more challenging and that 38T middle ring means you’ll be spending a lot of time on the bigger sprockets out back. You won’t have to spin your legs off downhill or on the road though. On balance, lower gears would be better for the trails.

There are lots of bits from Bontrager, Trek’s in-house component brand, on the 3500 including the big Bontrager LT3 tyres. They’re listed as 2in, but they’re quite tall for extra trail-smoothing volume. The tread pattern is at its best on hard surfaces, with a shallow tread but some worthwhile side knobs.

Very bycicle using since 2014 it's been 6 years and still it us in working conditions that is the best quality of this bike and trek company

I think that it doesn't has any big weakness but it is a bit expensive for what we get

Extremely confident handling, beautiful styling

Lower-quality component group, heavier

I rode one of these for a week when my custom 4300 was out of commission. I absolutely loved the way it handled. It was very tank-like, very planted and composed. I felt safe riding it. My biggest complaint was the drivetrain. The shifter triggers felt very cheap and I couldn't double-tap upshift as easily as I usually do. The rear derailleur felt flimsy. The cranks were shorter than I was used to which caused me some grief for a few days while my muscles adjusted. The brakes work well, but they scream like banshees when they get wet. The fork also felt a little mushy but turning up the preload helped with that. All in all, a great entry-level bike that looks extremely good.

It is smooth, rolls out fast and has a sweet feel. I have pleasure-riding bikes for more than seventy years. I bought this bike in a flea market for a friend, but sorry Tom, it is now my off-road ride, replacing another high-end mark which shall remain unnamed. My Trek.

None observed.

Love this bike.

Wheels Rear Derailleur Fork (no lock out)

I bought this bike as my first MTN bike ever. It lasted me about 4 rides before I broke the rear wheel half a mile into a trail ride. After that was replaced I did crash once and my rear derailleur hanger bent. I would suggest this bike to someone who is entry level mtn biking and doing easier, less-rocky trails, or even someone who is commuting. I got this bike for around $350 on sale and it was OK. I immediately got the MTN bike bug and got a better bike. However, I'm not done with the trek 3700. I know the frame has more to offer so I plan to ditch the crappy wheels, take off the crappy components and make it a SS.

Basic parts seem to be good quality. Not a lot of dough for a quality, reliable ride.

Minor parts that come with this bike are cheap - not surprising given the low cost to begin with. Easily rectified over the first two or three months of ownership.

As the other review mentions, some parts could be better. After I upgraded the grips, pedals, and tires, I was pretty satisfied. The frame, rims, and drivetrain components aren't the best, but they are more than adequate for someone getting into the sport and who doesn't want to drop a grand or more on their first bike. Forks aren't bad, though obviously they are not the cream of the crop. I have owned this bike for five months, and for the first three I kept mainly to the street as I was not in shape to hit the trails. Now that I have built up my endurance, the trails are fun on this bike. I do not find myself wishing I had spent more money on a bettter bike, this one feels solid beneath me either rambling downhill or climbing. Of course, this bike is a bit on the heavy side, but anything less than $1k will be in this same weight category. Overall a good value to begin with.

Schwinn Sierra - 1993. Was obviously in much better shape then!

Low price, RUGGED entry level bike. I have beaten this poor bike. I have been sent flying over the handlebars, and dumped this machine over logs. Absolutely nothing has failed. I asked for a good road and trail bike when I bought it, and that is exactly what I got. This bike has caused an addiction to trail riding.

Lack of Disc Brakes, and ground clearance. I also switched out the rear gears. The difference between 1 granny gear and 2 was just too far for me. This wasn't a problem at first. I was only looking for a bike to hit the trails with a few times a year, and ended up doing it a few times a week. Shifting was also a bit clunky if shifting under power on steep climbs, but I learned when to do it to make things go more smoothly. Time to upgrade. Bike is great, I am just ready for more.

I bought this bike in attempt to get my blood pressure lowered without medication, and completed this goal within two months. I originally was going to stay mostly on rail trails, so this was the best option the salesperson gave me. I ended up hitting more intermediate off road singletrack than roads, and put a hurtin on this bike. It has held up just fine. This bike is perfect for someone not too sure if they want to get out there into the singletrack trails. I did it by accident. It will get you there without draining your wallet, and will get you to the store as well.

good buy for the price, sturdy construction, comfortable ride.

grips are a bit uncomfortable on longer rides, plastic pedals seem a bit on the cheap side, saddle becomes uncomfortable with longer rides

I took this bike out for a nice long ride over dirt trails, road and a few inclines, it did pretty good, comfortable ride however after a while my palms began to hurt from the grips I will definitely change them out soon. Bike rides pretty smooth, for longer rides I would recommend changing out the saddle it can become a bit uncomfortable and the pedals are another component that I will change. I like the feel of the gears they shift very well going up inclines and I will able to speed up the hills pretty good, overall this is a good bike for the price will be even better with a few minor upgrades.

This bike is great. I was nervous at first. I have a family with two small boys and did not or could not spend $1000 bucks on a bike I new nothing about. I did my homework online and hit some local shops. I was not having any luck until I went to Great Escape. I am pretty heavy was 230lbs when I got the bike and wanted to get back in shape . The trek 3500 is great I have lost 15lbs and I am now starting to hit some pretty big trails . I love this bike it has really change everything about me. If u are trying to get back in shap adn want a bike that will hold your eight this is the one and it want break your bank!!! Highly recomended !!!!!

This is a great bike will take a beaten and will handle the big trails too for 419 u can not go wrong great bike I love mine !!!!

Durable, light weight, gears shift smoothly, disc brakes are awesome, good stock components, great bike for the price point.

The front shock cannot be locked. It has an adjuster, but unless you turn it to its firmest setting you will feel the bike bounce when you climb.

This is a great buy! Very good stock components. I am new to the sport and wanted to get a good beginner to intermediate bike that I could grow into without overspending. So far, I have been impressed with the overall quality of the bike. The components are great. The disc brakes work great, gears shift smoothly, it climbs well, and can be used on the road as well as the trails. I use the bike primarily for mountain biking, but I also strap on a baby seat and take my 2 year old daughter with me on rides. I ride the trails with guys that have spent 4 to 5 times more on their bikes and have way more experience than I do, but I feel the 3700 disc allows me to keep up with them without a problem.

Well built and stiff with a good suspension up front. Handles just fine and the fit is perfect for the average riders build. price is unbeatable at 395 list.

Lack of fenders.

Hard to beat this bike for the value. Rides and handles as good as any of the bike I own and many of them are 10 times the price. All in all a great purchse for any rider but especially for the casual around town person.

Is The Trek 3500 Mountain Bike A Good MTB?

Table of Contents

Trek 3500 mountain bike is no longer available. If you want to buy it, you can only find it on the used market.

However, as a nostalgic model, we have a comprehensive review of it from a current standpoint. Hello and welcome to the Best Bike Select blog.

What are the features of the Trek 3500 mountain bike? What are the pros and cons? If you own it, what is the current market value? And some alternatives are also given and a brief comparison is done. Let’s get started as time is running out.

Trek 3500 Disc

What are the features of the Trek 3500 mountain bike?

Aluminum frame.

Trek 3500 3 series

Trek 3500 3 series retains the 3 series’ frame characteristics. Alpha Silver Aluminium with a semi-integrated head tube is used, as with the Trek 3700. This frame’s features are appropriate for inexperienced riders. The down tube of the Trek 3500 is straight, and the top tube and seat post form a stable triangle shape.

This also improves the frame’s sturdiness, but at the expense of some of its aesthetics. The aluminum frame is extremely corrosion resistant and will not rust if properly cared for.

Shimano 21-speed

Shimano Altus EF51, 7 speed, and Shimano M131 gear systems combine to form a 21-speed gear system. This is also the most common speed number right now. Shifting remains smooth even when riding on rough trails or hills with rocks and tree roots.

This mid-range gearing system doesn’t appear to have much competition at this point, and it can even be found in some less expensive bikes. However, from 2012 to 2015, it was regarded as a high-value accessory.

Shock front fork

Prior to 2015, the shock forks were all made with an SR SunTour XCT coil with 80mm of travel. However, the SR Suntour M-3030, 75mm fork is used in the 2015 Trek 3500. The stroke is shortened by 5 mm, but the damping effect remains unchanged. This also clarifies the common misconception that the greater the distance traveled, the better.

Not necessarily, if the Trek 3500 other parts can adapt to the difficulty factor 4 of the road, and the shock fork can adapt to the difficulty factor 5 of the road. The Trek 3500 mountain bike is then only appropriate for difficulty factor 4. The shortcomings of the bike determine what it is appropriate for. As a result, lowering the travel is also fortifying other parts.

Bontrager LT3 Tires

Trek alpha 3500

This is one of the Trek 3 series’ features, 26×2.0″, which is similar to wide tires in general mountain riding. However, changing the tires to 2.4″ will make a difference when riding on muddier trails.

However, this is a beginner’s mountain bike, and there’s no reason to upgrade to wider tires until you’ve honed your riding skills to such a high level. The 2.0″ tires, of course, are more agile and provide the foundation for fast riding.

Tektro Alloy Cable Pull

A high-quality alloy cable pull is critical for precise braking. This is not a mountain bike designed for speed sports, but rather for mountain bikes with some technical mountain riding.

So, after careful consideration of the riding trail, I have a new appreciation for the V-brake on this one. This results in less travel for emergency braking and more wheel flexibility when removing mud from the rim.

However, this also implies that the brakes will need to be adjusted on a regular basis. Riders who do not want to get their hands dirty adjusting their brakes should consider switching to disc brakes.

Pros and Cons of Trek 3500

  • Sturdy aluminum frame
  • Flexible tires for beginners
  • SR SunTour XCT coil , coil spring, 75mm shock front fork
  • Excellent maneuverability
  • Non-disc brakes
  • Saddle is a bit stiff

This bike has a maximum total weight limit (combined weight of bicycle, rider, and cargo) of 300 pounds (136 kg).

  • How much is trek 3 series 3500 used price?

Bicycle Comparison

Trek 820 mountain bike vs trek 3500.

Trek 820 mountain bike

The Trek 820’s steel frame appears to add to the overall weight of the bike. However, the body’s strength has improved even more. It has the same 21 speeds as the Trek 3500 and the same 75mm fork travel.

As a result, the roads that are suitable for riding are also the same. With a price tag of less than $500, it is an excellent substitute for the Trek 3500.

As a rider who enjoys mountain riding, you will typically require a mountain bike for commuting. As a result, the Trek 820 mountain bike, which balances budget and commuter riding needs while using mid-range accessories, has received a lot of positive feedback from riders.

If you want to buy a Trek 3500 but can’t find one in stores, consider getting a Trek 820 mountain bike instead.

Trek Marlin 5 mountain bike VS Trek 3500

Trek Marlin 5

The Trek Marlin 5 mountain bike is the most popular 1X and 2X drivetrain and is suitable for casual riders.

The shock fork on the Trek Marlin 5 is significantly improved over the Trek 3500. The SR Suntour XCM 30 shock fork with coil spring, lockout, and preload is used, and the travel is 100mm. However, the S-frame shock fork is only 80mm long. The damping effect is improved.

When riding off-road, it also prevents the rider from bottoming out on rocky sections of the shock. The tire width has also been increased to 29×2.20″ (XS and S: 27.5×2.4″), making it ideal for daily adventures. It will please riders on and off the track.

Schwinn High Timber VS Trek 3500

Schwinn High Timber Mountain Bike

If you’re not into intense mountain riding, but rather a rider who prefers general trail or community riding. Then the Schwinn High Timber is perfect for you. With a lightweight aluminum frame, a great selection of colors, and durable, maintenance-free disc brakes, it’s a great choice for riders who like to commute. Similar use to the Trek 3500 for general woodland riding.

Learn more: Schwinn High Timber Mountain Bike Review

Trek’s 3500 Disc mountain bike is a high-quality option for any adventure. A more versatile mountain bike in every way. Furthermore, the aluminum frame of the Trek 3500 Alpha is relatively lightweight. But one that does not appear as strong as a mountain bike for individual purposes.

A great mountain bike for beginners, with a lighter aluminum frame and a quick, nimble drivetrain for riding on trails and hilly woodlands. The thick, knobby tires provide traction on a wide range of terrain. If you’re new to mountain biking, this is a great place to start.
