Journey to the Savage Planet: Hot Garbage DLC Review

Journey to the Savage Planet Hot Garbage

I loved Journey to the Savage Planet , so when its Hot Garbage DLC was announced earlier this month, I jumped at the chance to revisit the game.

I wish I hadn’t bothered.

Hot Garbage adds a standalone two to three-hour campaign to Journey to the Savage Planet . In it, you’ll visit a new planet – the amusingly-named DL-C1, where the dastardly Kindred Aerospace has mapped out plans for a new retirement village. Unfortunately, their plans have been interrupted by rival company, who has dumped toxic waste all over the planet. That’s where you come in. It’s your job to find the toxic waste, clear it up – and face off against the rival company’s evil boss while you’re at it.

As a piece of DLC,  Hot Garbage  fits seamlessly into the rest of the game. If, like me, you’re going back after completing the base game, it’ll appear as a new mission, with a new waypoint for you to travel to. If you’re still making your way through  Journey to the Savage Planet , it’ll become available early into the game, once you’ve unlocked some necessary upgrades. And, for the most part,  Hot Garbage  feels like a nice expansion to what  Journey to the Savage Planet  has already set out. It’s a whole new area to explore, very much in the same vein as the planet we’ve already visited. There are a few new enemies to face off against, but plenty of the same, too. Your arsenal is mostly unchanged, but you will gain a few new abilities should you wish.

Journey to the Savage Planet Hot Garbage

Unfortunately, most of those new abilities aren’t particularly useful. You’ll acquire boots to walk underwater – which you’ll never actually need – and the ability to survive toxic gas, which is required to progress though Hot Garbage and has no function outside of it. There are a couple of non-essential upgrades for your existing gear too, but I don’t know about you; I already felt pretty maxed-out after completing the base game.

The most annoying of the new ‘abilities’ added to  Hot Garbage , though, is the jetpack ability. Rather than a permanent upgrade, it’s something that automatically activates when you pass through a glowing circle. You’ll get a very small charge of power, with the aim being to control your jets well enough to get you to the next circle, and the next, until you reach your destination. It’s fiddly to get the hang of, and while it at least offers a new way to get around the planet,  Hot Garbage ‘s over-reliance on it feels lazy.

Traversal has always been tricky in Journey to the Savage Planet , but instead of feeling like an enjoyable challenge to overcome, the jetpack feature makes it feel like an unforgiving slog. Going from circle to circle leaves no room for error, and if you find yourself falling to the ground, you’ll have a frustrating trek back to the start – providing you actually survive the drop, that is. A couple of times I found myself cheesing the game, balancing on rocks I  absolutely was not supposed to climb, and making use of my jump thrusters. Fun it was not, but it was less frustrating than using the jetpack.

Journey to the Savage Planet Hot Garbage

The worst offender of  Hot Garbage , though, is its final boss. The bosses throughout Journey to the Savage Planet were a highlight; feeling like classic platforming bosses with a modern twist. Each have their own attack patterns and your success relies on learning them and taking your time. That isn’t the case here. Forcing you to navigate those dreaded jetpack circles while attempting to dodge incoming rockets and shoot targets, it’s more a lesson in managing your rage than it is in skill and perseverance. Set in a tight and uninspired battleground, it feels like you’re destined to fail numerous times before striking lucky. And having to go through the motions of recovering your supplies and killing two smaller enemies before the boss shows up simply gets tiresome.

But it’s not all bad.  Hot Garbage  provides a wonderful new environment to explore, one that packs in a lot more variation in a small space than the base game. There’s plenty to see and do, although the additional hostility (and the new frustrations of moving from point A to B) might put you off trying to achieve some of the optional objectives. Still, having a beautiful coastline to explore is a nice addition, as is the new extra-colourful variety of pufferbird.

I wouldn’t go as far as calling  Hot Garbage , well, hot garbage. But it’s certainly not great, and it’s somewhat tarnished my otherwise excellent experience with Journey to the Savage Planet . By all means, give it a go if you’re desperate for a new area to explore – you can’t  really  go wrong with its £6/$8 asking price – but don’t expect too much. And be prepared to get very  frustrated.

Mature Content Description

The developers describe the content like this:

Players use laser blasters to shoot enemy creatures; players can also kick aliens into carnivorous plants, resulting in splatters of green blood. The game depicts some comical TV ads that contain instances crude humor: a phone-sex commercial for a gelatinous blob creature (“Chat with the most seductive soft bodies in space...”); a fast-food commercial showing human limbs going through a meat grinder. In one sequence, players encounter a creature with an anus-like orifice; players' scanning equipment confirms “a festering butthole” and “pile of poop.” During the course of the game, certain plants release a gas that alters the screen and color saturation; text indicates that the plants “disperse thick mists of hallucinogenic spores. Enjoy responsibly.”

Review: Journey to the Savage Planet: Hot Garbage

Image of Brett Makedonski

Alternate title: The Toxic Avenger

Journey to the Savage Planet  is one of 2020’s standout surprises , a breezy adventure-platformer in the spirit of Metroid Prime . There’s a lot to love — a never-serious tone, fast ability-based locomotion, and a constant pull to explore in every direction all come to mind — but the progression loop is the very best thing about Journey to the Savage Planet . You feel as though you’re always becoming stronger and more capable, and that’s reflected in how efficiently you’re able to rip around this world. The Savage Planet doesn’t seem so oppressively savage after a little while.

That’s something of a double-edged sword when it comes to the first story add-on Hot Garbage . It’s nearly impossible to replicate that stellar progression loop when you’re already at the top.

ourney to the Savage Planet: Hot Garbage DLC review

Journey to the Savage Planet: Hot Garbage  (PC, PS4, Xbox One [reviewed]) Developer: Typhoon Studios Publisher: 505 Games Released: April 15, 2020 (PC, Xbox One), TBD (PS4) MSRP: $7.99

There’s a nefarious corporation driving the plot in Hot Garbage , just not your  nefarious corporation for once. Kindred Aerospace has plans to terraform the quaint planet of DL-C1 into a sprawling retirement community (which, I guess actually is nefarious in a “they paved paradise and put up a parking lot” kind of way), but Vyper Corp is dumping toxic waste all over your island. That’s unacceptable! (Unacceptable because it interferes with Kindred’s profit potential; they would not care about the pollution one bit if there weren’t monetary interests at play.)

The task is relatively straightforward: Find damning evidence of Vyper’s eco-crimes, blow up some robot guards who try to stop you, and then confront Kronus — the brains behind Vyper who mocks and belittles you the entire time. It feels surprisingly linear even though it’s an open-world-type space.

That’s the biggest problem with Hot Garbage  — it can’t quite achieve the same momentum that makes Journey to the Savage Planet  so special in the first place. Coming into the DLC with 100 percent completion in the base game, nothing in Hot Garbage  made me more capable in a meaningful way.

The new upgrades are: Boots for walking underwater (only useful in Hot Garbage  and never actually necessary), an unlimited stamina mod (it’s nice, but the fully upgraded stamina bar was perfectly adequate), an enhancement that points out all the postcards on the map (the new collectible type that doesn’t affect anything), and the ability to survive toxic gas (only comes into play late in Hot Garbage  and is a progression requirement).

There isn’t that pull to explore every corner of the planet and that’s a letdown. I did anyway — possibly out of obligation more than anything else — and quickly finished Hot Garbage  100 percent complete in almost exactly three hours. I was left feeling like maybe I came into the add-on too overpowered, before realizing that nothing found on DL-C1 would’ve really contributed to my abilities anyway.

Journey to the Savage Planet: Hot Garbage

It’s a harsh assessment, but Hot Garbage  doesn’t quite capture the essence of Journey to the Savage Planet ‘s dripfeed of metroidvania power fantasy. The rest is spot-on though. The comedic chops are still there, maybe better than ever because this is a quick and focused narrative. Jetpacking through rings (each one refuels your jetpack) makes for a fast and skillful way of covering big chunks of land. There’s a lot to like in Hot Garbage  even if its approach probably isn’t the reason you fell in love with Journey to the Savage Planet  in the first place.

If the eponymous Savage Planet is your Kindred explorer’s residence, the space rock called DL-C1 is a timeshare. It’s a decent little getaway — probably worth the investment, a change of pace, and the vacation is over quicker than you’d like. But, despite what the name suggests,  Hot Garbage  is far from a dump.

Journey to the Savage Planet Hot Garbage DLC Review

Image of Mark Delaney

Journey to the Savage Planet was born from the principles of a studio seeking salvation from past overbearing publishers, where grayish grit and graphic violence have been the mandates for much too long.

In its colorful, slapstick rejection of so many norms, Typhoon Studios carved out a unique, retro-inspired metroidvania when its debut launched in January.

Fans will enjoy returning to the game with the new Hot Garbage  DLC, as it clearly improves on the base game in at least one important way, though it seems strangely built for players who haven’t yet finished the game.

journey to the savage planet hot garbage

Once purchased, Hot Garbage is worked seamlessly into the campaign. In fact, given its platforming and combat challenges inside the 2- to 4-hour DLC, I came away thinking I’d have enjoyed it more had I not yet beaten the main game.

If you head into it as post-credits DLC, it’s likely your character will feel almost overpowered for the expansion. It doesn’t do a great job at ramping up for experienced players who have seen the credits and climbed the skill tree.

Speaking of, its new skills fit a similar mold. Big boosts to health and stamina  — unlimited in the latter’s case  — should be widely beloved, but for anyone who has already toppled the final boss, these new boons lose much of their impact.

For all of these reasons, the DLC ends up feeling much more linear than its metroidvania predecessor. Despite opening up several new hubs as soon as you touch down on your new planet, if you’re bringing a character that has things like quadruple-jump and lots of weapon upgrades, planet DL-C1 will be much breezier than you remember the main game being.

An apparent dearth of secrets scattered about is the biggest fault with the expansion. As I wrote in my original review , the post-credits clean-up had me chasing collectibles and resources in a manner that so few games do these days, but Hot Garbage doesn’t provide the same thrill, save for 22 postcards to find.

Collectively, Hot Garbage feels more like a missing chapter than a post-game return.

The new locale, despite being a new planet with new flora and fauna, largely feels like the others, too, though in this case, it’s more forgivable as the game’s aesthetics remain so awesome. The constant blend of pinks, greens, and oranges still looks wonderful even in your new land of Boomerdale, a retirement community for the people who made CBS America’s most-watched network.

journey to the savage planet hot garbage

One way in which the DLC does clearly improve on its foundation is its final boss. The main game’s sludgy endgame villain unleashed a bombardment of attacks often too hectic to maneuver with any real sense of skill. The DLC’s Big Bad, while about as fleshed out as a ghost, provides for a multi-stage showdown akin to so many of the games which clearly inspired Typhoon.

You’ll know just what to do when you see it, satisfyingly leaving it up to your execution at that point.

Like other parts of the add-on, this battle uses the game’s new traversal mechanic, which allows players to jetpack around the region so long as they coast checkpoint to checkpoint and refill their gauges properly. You’ll only get a few seconds on a full gauge, so it becomes a wholly new and interesting platforming puzzle to get from A to B, even as the mechanic sometimes feels like you need a third hand due to some camera issues.

  • Features the best boss battle of the entire game
  • Lacking in reasons to stick around after a swift DLC campaign
  • Feels built primarily for players who haven’t yet finished the main game

Hot Garbage manages to capture some of what made  Journey to the   Savage Planet interesting, like its vibrant world and a busy blend of combat and platforming, but it leaves some of the best bits, like secrets and unlockables, behind.

If you haven’t yet played  Savage Planet , I definitely recommend adding Hot Garbage to the game when you jump in, as its rewards seem designed to suit you better than the seasoned players who have already cataloged the entire alien world and all its colorful, farting birds.

Journey To The Savage Planet: Hot Garbage Is Anything But

The expansion is a 2-3 hour side story that introduces a new planet, DL-C1, and a competitor to Kindred Aerospace, called Vyper Corp.

Journey To The Savage Planet  made a strong impression on me when it came out this past January. I was charmed by the brightly colored world densely packed with unique and silly aliens discover. It felt like a cross between a light-hearted  Ratchet & Clank adventure and an exploration-centric game like  Metroid Prime.  It delivers a satisfying experience in about 10 hours with plenty of collectibles scattered around for completionists.  Savage Planet has been at the top of my recommendation list all year.

RELATED: Pilot Episode Of Hello Neighbor Animated Series To Premiere Tomorrow

The first DLC pack,  Hot Garbage , was announced just a week ago during Microsoft's latest Inside Xbox stream . The expansion is a 2-3 hour side story that introduces a new planet, DL-C1, and a competitor to Kindred Aerospace, called Vyper Corp.  Hot Garbage  introduces some new ideas that fit in really well with the core game and managed to convince me that  Savage Planet might have more longevity than I expected. For only $7.99, anyone who enjoyed  Journey To The Savage Planet will certainly get their money's worth.

Looking For Some Hot Garbage

The DLC's implementation is a bit clumsy. If you've already finished the game you can log in and find a new quest in your log and a new waypoint to teleport to start  Hot Garbage . If you're playing for the first time the quest will unlock as soon as you acquire the Shock Fruit Stabilizer. Once you've unlocked the upgrade, the quest and waypoint simply appear without any notification or voice line. I like a DLC that seamlessly integrates into the base game because it makes replaying the game more interesting, but the sudden appearance of  Hot Garbage will confuse new players.

journey to the savage planet hot garbage

DL-C1 has just as many diverse biomes as the base game in an even more compact package, only this time you'll be exploring them from a much different perspective. The new traversal mechanic in  Hot Garbage is a jet pack and its a real butt-clencher both in exploration and in combat.

Jet Packs Make Everything Better

Typhoon Studios do a great job of taking familiar concepts and really make them their own in Savage Planet, and the jetpack is no exception. Passing through floating rings fills the tank, meaning it's necessary to constantly move from ring to ring to stay airborne. Flying high above areas you've already explored on foot is a blast. The pink rings are spaced out just barely within reach of each other and, should you run out of fuel before reaching the next checkpoint, the fall will almost certainly be lethal. At the risk of exhausting my Insomniac reference quota, it reminds me of the flying levels in  Spyro when you need to fly through each ring just as the timer is about to hit zero.

journey to the savage planet hot garbage

In combat, the battlefields are peppered with pink rings that allow you to stay afloat and take on enemies from the skies. Flying and fighting feels amazing because you really need to split your attention between enemies and pink rings, navigating around both while keeping an eye on your energy tank. I loved fighting the new robot enemy types from skies even when there was an option to stay on the ground.

RELATED:  This Spawn Action Figure Has Already Made Over A Million Bucks

Speaking of new enemies, it's a bit of a mixed bag. There are 3 new robot enemies to challenge: a Roomba that rushes to vacuum up any crafting materials on the ground, a robot that's weak to either bombs, acid, or electricity, and a murder machine that can't be dodged no matter what you do.

As much as I liked the puzzle-combat style of matching weaknesses on the smaller robots, the big robot was a real pain. You only fight two of them, but I never figured out how to effectively deal with it other than tank all the damage and wait patiently for it's panels to open and reveal it's weak spots.

journey to the savage planet hot garbage

There is a boss fight, but it's more of an arena that tosses waves of the new enemy types at you. At a certain point, lava rises from the floor and you're forced up into the air. While flying around shooting targets, I couldn't help but be reminded of the final boss fight from  Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage.

I don't know how many of these $8 DLC packs will be made for  Savage Planet . If this is the only one I find it a bit odd. It's hard for me to justify reinstalling a game I've completed for just 2 more hours of content. On the other hand, if this is the first of, say, 3 similarly sized DLC expansions, it will be great to replay the game when all 3 are available and experience all the content together. If you're playing  Savage Planet  for the first time though, pick up  Hot Garbage and consider it a side quest that opens up three quarters into the game. You'll get some great upgrades that will help you in the late game (infinite stamina is amazing) and it will remind you a lot of  Spyro the Dragon.
