Tour du Mont Blanc: July 13, 2024

I’ve been checking day and night for weeks now and they finally decided to put up the date for next year’s Tour du Mont Blanc ‘cyclo’ – July 13, 2024 . I wasn’t really concerned about getting in before it sold out, but wanted to secure a hotel room in Les Saisies before it was too late and I needed to book on another mountain.

And don’t worry, Dear Reader, registrations aren’t open till ‘mid December’. You have time to have a good talk with your soul before deciding.

Very brave of you!

Or stupid. Time will tell.

And I thought the Marmotte was a big day out. Like it says on the Tin, Heroic.

Right, it’s a whole other animal altogether, at least for mortals like us.

Trip & Route Details

1st half (trekking clockwise route out of chamonix) – 10 days/ 9 nights.

DAY 1 (Arrival Day): Arrive at Geneva airport (GVA) by NOON and shuttle to Chamonix, France. Trip Orientation and Welcome Dinner in Chamonix (included in trip).

DAY 2: Acclimatization Day - This day will be spent exploring Chamonix to adjust to the time/altitude change and buy any last minute supplies for the trek. Dinner in Chamonix (DIY- we'll recommend some of our favorite spots).

DAY 3: Chamonix to Argentiere - There are a few options for our first day on the trail- your guides will assess the weather and other factors before deciding on the days route. The hike to Argentiere is mild-to-moderate, depending on the route, but a shorter a distance.

DAY 4:  Argentière to Trient, Switzerland – Our first big climb starts right out of Argentière as we make our way to the Col de Balme, a high mountain pass at the border of France and Switzerland, before descending into Trient.   Very Difficult / 10.7 Miles / 3,100’ Elevation Gain / 2,950’ Elevation Loss

DAY 5:  Trient to Champex, Switzerland – With a symphony of Swiss cowbells to motivate us, we tackle a steep climb in the morning up to high mountain pastures. The route moderates in the afternoon, ending at a mountain chalet nestled in the hills outside of Champex.   Difficult / 11.6 Miles / 3,100’ Elevation Gain / 1,950’ Elevation Loss

DAY 6:  Champex to Ferret, Switzerland – We follow a downhill route into the beautiful town of Champex and stop for photos at the scenic Lac Champex before starting a long, relatively gentle climb up the Swiss side of Val Ferret.   Moderately Difficult / 11.4 Miles / 2,100’ Elevation Gain / 1,800’ Elevation Loss

DAY 7:  Ferret to Rifugio Bonatti – Crossing from Switzerland into Italy over the Grand Col Ferret we enjoy a terrific view down the full length of the Italian side of the Mont Blanc massif. The route then descends through the Italian Val Ferret before mounting a higher balcony trail that leads to our mountain refuge.   Very Difficult / 11.7 Miles / 4,100’ Elevation Gain / 2,700’ Elevation Loss

DAY 8:  Rifugio Bonatti to Courmayeur, Italy. We come off the high routes down into the ancient and charming village of Courmayeur, with stunning views along the way of Mont Blanc and the grand Aosta Valley. A big Italian celebration dinner awaits.   Moderate / 8.4 Miles / 400’ Elevation Gain / 2,800’ Elevation Loss

Arrival Day, Week 2: While those on Week 1 hike into Courmayeur, those joining for Week 2 will be shuttling from Geneva to Courmayeur to join the group for a celebratory dinner in town (dinner included in trip)

‍ 2nd Half –  (clockwise route from Courmayeur) - 9 days/ 8 nights

DAY 2/9:  Rest/Acclimatization Day in Courmayeur- a spectacular gondola ride to view Mont Blanc; explore town, spa options, etc.

DAY 3/10:  Resuming the TMB: Courmayeur to Lac Combal – We resume our trek, and it is one of the most demanding days of the entire route, starting with a steep climb out of Courmayeur. We will take it slow and steady all morning until stopping to enjoy a well-deserved break and picnic lunch. Our preferred spot is a high viewpoint looking across Val Veny and Lac Combal to the towering Aiguille des Glaciers. From lunch on, we follow a mostly downhill track towards our mountain refuge.   Very Difficult / 8.9 Miles / 3,950’ Elevation Gain / 1,650’ Elevation Loss

(Those departing after Week 1 will catch morning shuttles from Courmayeur to Geneva Airport for midday departures.)

DAY 4/11:  Lac Combal to Les Chapieux, France – A relatively short and easy climb to the Col de la Seigne starts the day well.  It is here, the high point for the day, that we cross from Italy into France.  A long, steady descent through the Vallée des Glaciers brings us to our delightful guesthouse in the tiny hamlet of Les Chapieux.   Moderate / 10.8 Miles / 1,800’ Elevation Gain / 3,100’ Elevation Loss

DAY 5/12:  Les Chapieux to Les Contamines, France – Two things make this one of the more difficult days of the journey.  First, is the steep ascent to the Col de la Croix.  Second, is navigating - and sometimes scrambling - over long stretches of very rocky terrain. The demanding downhill track eventually eases - and the views are spectacular - as we approach our destination hotel in the town of Les Contamines. Very Difficult / 12.5 Miles / 3,150’ Elevation Gain / 4,400’ Elevation Loss

DAY 6/13:  Les Contamines to Les Houches, France – This long-distance day includes a couple of good uphill climbs, but we stop in the middle for a leisurely lunch break in the hamlet of Bionnassay.  By afternoon, we are descending across ski slopes and past elegant chalets sitting above the town of Les Houches.   Moderately Difficult / 10.1 Miles / 1,650’ Elevation Gain / 2,100’ Elevation Loss

DAY 7/14:  Les Houches to Chamonix.  A shorter, more moderate day of hiking up to and along a balcony trail completes the route back to Chamonix, where a private chalet and catered dinner await.  Congratulations on completing the TMB journey!   Moderate / 7 Miles / 1,650’ Elevation Gain / 1,650’ Elevation Loss

DAY 8/15:  A day to recover. Take time to discover all that makes Chamonix the ultimate resort town in Europe. Visit the glacier and ice cave, book a paragliding trip, ride the sky-high gondolas, take a day hike, or just spend the day resting and exploring the shops in town.

DAY 9/16 (Departure Day):  Morning shuttles from Chamonix to Geneva for midday departures.

Note:  Alternate routes, destinations and activities may be incorporated into itinerary at the discretion of guides.

tour du mont blanc cycling 2024

As one of the most iconic treks in the world, the Tour du Mont Blanc is a bucket list adventure for many people. It is an amazing, beautiful, authentic European experience that you will remember for a lifetime. We are in our 9 th year of offering this opportunity to our clients, and we are pleased to have so many satisfied finishers. Truth be told, it is challenging (we’re in the Alps) and also extremely rewarding (WE’RE IN THE ALPS!!).

Long before the trip starts, we are doing everything we can to ensure your success. We have selected comfortable, reliable accommodations throughout the route so you can rest well. We make training and gear recommendations that will enhance your comfort and endurance. We provide good hearty meals to keep you going. We have a support crew along the route to move your duffles along, so all you carry on the trail is a day bag. We are familiar with alternate routes and modes of travel so that we can be adaptive as conditions change. And then, as the trek gets underway, we foster close bonds and work together as a team to support every trekker throughout the trip. No hiker is left behind!

Here’s what you can do:  Know what you are getting into. This is a marathon, not a sprint. Accept that some moments will be glorious, and others will be grueling. Do the training and come prepared with strong legs and healthy lungs. In the end, be honest with yourself. Try a half trip if you are doubting yourself on the full. Take a different tour if you think this may be too much. We are happy to talk with you and help you make your decisions. Truth be told- it really is the trip of a lifetime, and we want to ensure that you (and the rest of the group) enjoy it as such!

I just got back from Tour de Mont Blanc and had a fabulous time! My second Fit4Adventure trip with Diane. You can count on having a great experience!! She also keeps the group sizes manageable. Joe the Tour Leader is a kind and caring person, super organized and professional, and an expert at keeping everyone safe and happy! They did a fantastic job at making this a wonderful experience -absolutely gorgeous hiking, great food, and super company. I'm looking forward to my next Fit4Adventure trip and hope to see you all again!

You each inspired me so much, I came back a different person, a few lbs heavier (due to the amazing food) but so much lighter in heart!!! Thank you all

Thank you for your patience, kindness, humor and thoughtfulness as Fit 4 Adventure guided me (and a group of other women) through the mountains of Mont Blanc. This was a great way to end my 60th year and begin the first year of my 60s and opened my eyes to the other side of the world..

I have done at least 4 Fit4adventure trips and they have all been awesome. This is because of the activities, the wonderful guides, the folks that you meet on the trip and all of the neat unexpected extras and special touches on the trips. We are looking forward to several more trips over the next several years. I can not recommend them highly enough!

Road Bike the Tour of Mont Blanc Cycling

The Tour du Mont Blanc is a classic of the road bike long distances trips. This is a tour around the famous Mont Blanc starting in Chamonix via Col des Montets then Col de la Forclaz, Martigny, the Col du Grand St Bernard, Aosta, La Thuile, Col du Petit St Bernard, Bourg St Maurice, the Cormet Roselend, Beaufort, Col des Saisies, Megeve, St Gervais, Le Fayet and return to Chamonix. On the map, it seems nice and easy but in reality you should count 325km and 7400m of altitude gain.

We chose to do the trip in two days. That gave us two big days of 7hrs30mins. Starting early is important to avoid the heat. There are many fountains along the way to fill your water bottle.

The route/itinerary of the Tour du Mont Blanc on Road Bike:

Chamonix - Col des Montets (you are in Switzerland) - Col de la Forclaz - Martigny: 44km Martigny - Champex - Col du Grand Saint Bernard (you are in Italy) - Aoste: 76km Aoste - La Thuile: 41km

Arrival day, feel at home in the Swiss Alps

Sunday arrival at our chalet. Settle in and relax, For those who want we will go for a short ride at 17.00 hrs to test the bikes and legs.

Swiss authentic villages, pristine mountain lake, rugged peaks

Breakfast from 8.00 and departure for the first stage at 10.00. We will ride down the valley and will pass through some authentic Swiss mountain villages. At the lowest point, we will continue our journey into the Grand St. Bernard Valley and up to Champex Lac for Lunch at the lake. We will ride down into Val Ferret and ride on a mix of gravel paths and single track to our overnight at the base of the Mont Dolent with great views of the La Neuve Glacier and the rugged peaks of the Aiguilles Rouges. 47 km / 1550 m

Swiss cows, crossing the border on a high mountain pass, espresso in the mountains, Gelato in Courmayeur

After a short warm-up, we cross the river and turn onto a jeep track that will eventually turn to singletrack. A beautiful but demanding climb will bring us to the mountain pass Grand Col Ferret at 2537 m. Spectacular views over both the Swiss and Italian side of the mountain range. Impressive rock formations, massive glaciers, and roaring alpine streams. What follows is a technical descent on the Italian side until we reach the mountain hut, Refugio Elena for espresso and cake. We continue down the valley and will turn off onto a steep jeep track on the left side of the valley for a challenging climb and a beautiful traverse with views across to the glaciers of Mont Blanc. next stop, Gelato in Courmayeur. What rests us is a final climb to our overnight mountain with uninterrupted views across to Mont Blanc.

Old smugglers trail to high mountain pass into France, super fun and flow descent, the impressive dam at Lac Roseland

We start with a short downhill but will soon be climbing up to the Col de la Seigne, 2516m on the border with France. The climb will start on asphalt but will turn into a jeep track after which we will follow the old smuggler’s trail over the mountain pass. The pass offers us once again a great view, this time into France. A flowing and long downhill will bring us down to a group of old barns and further down to the remote village of Les Chapieux. In winter this valley is tortured by avalanches and is therefore cut off from the outside world for most of the winter. From here we start our climb to Cormet de Roseland and around the lake. We will stay overnight looking out over Lac Roseland. 49 km / 1550 m

French Cows, hike a bike, the best view of Mont Blanc, overnight at a cozy mountain hut.

We will start climbing almost instantly. A farm track leads us above Lac de Roseland from where we can see the next climb winding up the mountain in numerous hairpin turns. This long climb leads us to the top of Col de Gittaz that we will reach by carrying our bikes for the last 20 minutes. From the top, we have one of the best views of Mont Blanc and its impressive glaciers. A technical descent and short climb gets us to Col de Joly after which we start a fun descent to Les Contamines. A beautiful trail leads us along the river before we start the final climb to our overnight in a mountain hut. A tough and steep ride to a rewarding beautiful location. 48 km / 1650 m

Technical singletrack, Mont Blanc railroad, Aiguille de Midi, with tourists from all around the world.

We start with a traverse on a trail that has some challenges in it and for safety reasons a few walking sections. After this fun trail, we will start the steep climb up to the Col de Voza. From there we make an extra loop with fantastic views and finally, it is down to Les Houches and a ride along the river to Chamonix. Spent a relaxing afternoon watching climbers and tourists from all over the world and visit one of the must-see sights in Chamonix, Aiguille du Midi at 3800 meters. Reached by an impressive cable car. (no riding down from there, unfortunately). 31 km / 920 m

Final day with a challenging balcony trail, last views of Mont Blanc before crossing back into Switzerland, finish the ride in the vineyards.

We follow the valley up towards Argentiere and La Tour. In La Tour, you have the option to take the lift or climb up to Col de Balme which is the border with Switzerland. From the col, a spectacular singletrack leads us into the Trient Valley. Our last Climb will be to the Col de Forclaz. What rests is the ride down through the vineyards to the old Roman city of Martigny in the Rhone Valley. We will celebrate the end of our tour around Mont Blanc with a drink on one of the terraces to wait for the van to drive us back to the MTB Verbier Chalet. 40 km / 1450 m

Departure day, great memories, see you next time

After breakfast, it is time to say goodbye. You bring home memories of a great mountain bike adventure… Already looking forward to your next tour in the Alps.

Additional information

The trip will be guided by experienced guides. They have a great knowledge of the area and besides being skilled mountain bikers they are first aid trained and have great mechanical skills to do repairs on the trail. They will make sure you have the trip of a lifetime.

Luggage, transport & accommodation

During the trip, we will transport your luggage to each hotel. We stay overnight in accommodations that suit the character of the journey. A local family run hotel, mountain cabin or alpine chalet. Room preferences will be accommodated wherever possible but in general, you will be sharing a room and in some locations, we will need to share a room with multiple persons

On a tour like this good food is of major importance. All meals are inclusive (except for the dinner in Chamonix) Breakfast and dinner will be enjoyed at the hotel each day and we will provide you with a packed lunch each day. On our rides, we will have the opportunity to enjoy a cold drink or an extra meal at a mountain cabin or local restaurant.

Your bike will need to be in top condition. We recommend riding a full suspension bike with gears suitable for steeps. Recommended is the lightest gear you can find. On 2×11 setups,  go for a 22 or 24 in front and a 42 on the rear cassette. When riding 1×11 or 1×12 we recommend a 28 or 30 set up in front (standard will be a 32 or 34 in front on most set ups) You will definitely need those. When in doubt “the easier the gear the better” you will not regret this.

For tires, we recommend a wider tire of a minimum of 2.3 with an all-round thread. Lightweight and narrow XC tires are not suitable.

A dropper seatpost is highly recommended or an easy way to lower your seat manually.

On request, rental bikes can be arranged through us.

Fitness and Preparation

The Tour du Mont Blanc is a challenging journey for the adventurous mountain biker with a good physical shape, endurance and perseverance and capable of handling a mountain bike on steep technical climbs and descents on singletrack. Where possible we have kept the riding on roads to a minimum so most kilometers will be in the dirt.

Clearly, the Tour du Mont Blanc demands good preparation.

  • Make sure you have been riding plenty of kilometers in the months leading up. Make sure to make a number of day trips of at least 4-5 hours in the saddle. If possible challenge yourself on steep technical climbs to practice balance and get used to riding the lightest gear.
  • Get used to riding with a backpack of approx. 6-10 kg

The Tour du Mont Blanc: Training Guidelines

tour du mont blanc cycling 2024

Revised and updated November 2022

Often referred to as the toughest one-day sportive in the world, the Tour du Mont Blanc is a loop through three countries (France, Switzerland and Italy) around the highest mountain in Europe. The route covers 338km with 8,300m of climbing. These are huge numbers and the event is not to be taken lightly.

The Tour du Mont Blanc is one of the very few events during which many participants seriously wonder if they will be able to finish. Depending on weather conditions, up to 50% of the riders who cross the start line will not reach the finishing line. The event is above all an endurance challenge, and although all participants are timed, there is no official classification and all finishers receive a well-deserved “Gold” certificate.

1. What does it take to do well – or simply finish – this event?

The start is at 5am and the finish line closes at 23:59. Depending on your level, it will thus take you between ~12 and 19 hours to become an official finisher of the Tour du Mont Blanc. The challenge is at least as much mental as physical, if not more so. You will push yourself to your limits, and then have to dig deeper still, experiencing moments of euphoria followed by despair, revealing depths of character you may not have known you possess. Most participants think of quitting many times and yet manage to find the cussed determination they need to keep going.

An event such as this should be prepared over several years. If you are relatively new to cycling, we recommend you accumulate experience riding shorter events before tackling the Tour du Mont Blanc. Even if you are an experienced cyclist, we suggest riding an absolute minimum of 5,000km with at least 50,000m+ of climbing in the year before. The great majority of participants ride between twice and four times these amounts.

So how best to prepare for the TMB?

To answer this let’s take a look at the demands of the event. From start to finish, the route is a constant succession of climbs and descents with barely a single metre of flat road. The majority of the long ascensions are at an average gradient varying around 6-7%, but the col de Champex is harder, offering 10.5km at 8.2% with some long pitches at 10%. The longest climb, the col du Grand Saint Bernard from Orcières, is 24.8km and 1,580m of vertical, with the last 6.5km at close to 9%.

The weather is a major imponderable, and can turn an extremely tough event into a terrible ordeal if you are unprepared or lack the right clothes. Extremes of heat can be as challenging for some as heavy rain, sleet or even snow and the resulting risk of hypothermia for others. Even if it doesn’t rain, you may experience temperatures varying from ~0°C to ~30°C throughout the day.

Looking at the detail, these are the most important demands the Tour du Mont Blanc makes of you:

Physiological

  • Exceptional aerobic endurance
  • A high power-to-weight ratio
  • A high capacity to burn fat instead of glycogen while climbing steadily
  • The ability to recover quickly on the descents between long efforts on the climbs

Psychological

  • The ability to maintain focus, motivation and lucidity for the time it takes to finish, even when severely fatigued
  • The self-discipline to stick to the optimum pace on the climbs (and let others go… perhaps to see them again later!)
  • The ability to tolerate long periods of pain and discomfort
  • The ability to stay positive and deal with inevitable setbacks and negative thoughts
  • Excellent climbing skills, on long climbs and varied gradients
  • The ability to refuel effectively throughout the ride
  • Excellent descending and cornering skills
  • The ability to change clothing or at least adjust for temperature while riding

It is certainly possible to reach the finish line of the Tour du Mont Blanc without being “excellent” on all these criteria. It will, however, take longer and feel harder… Each criterion is important and your particular combination will determine your overall performance, or indeed whether or not you are able to finish.

Before working on your personal training plan, take the time to analyse your current abilities against this list to identify your strengths and limiters.

Plan not only to develop your strengths, but also work on your limiters, at least to the point where they no longer handicap you. As an example, if descending is a limiter for you, you might easily lose 5-10 minutes on each descent, adding up to as much as an hour and a half by the end. This is a shame, because descending faster is a skill you can learn which has almost no extra energy cost!

2. Your Training Plan: Principles

The best training plan for you is one that has been designed with your unique strengths, limiters, objectives, context and constraints in mind, and is constantly adapted for you when things change (as they inevitably do).

A very strong rider who expects to finish in less than 14 hours needs a different plan to someone who will struggle to finish in 19 hours.

A generic plan intended for all will be sub-optimum at best and potentially useless. This is why we are not providing a generic plan. The “plan” we propose below is in fact a set of guidelines and a framework for you to adopt and adapt as appropriate. Our goal is to give you the means to think carefully about the process and take responsibility for your own preparation.

HOWEVER, this is not a book and we cannot possible explain here all the nuances and individual variations inherent in the training process. We therefore strongly encourage you to use this document as an aide-memoire to what might be important, but then either to do your own research into how to apply it, or to find a coach to help you.

The key principles behind a strong training plan for the Tour du Mont Blanc are:

  • Make the Tour du Mont Blanc a priority. This should go without saying, but if you want to ride well on the day, you must commit to a serious effort of preparation. Our plan assumes you will train for 10-15h per week on average through the first part, rising to 15-20h per week on average during the final three months.
  • Be consistent. This is the single most important success factor. Of course your training load will vary from one week to the next but these variations should be deliberate in order to create overload and then recovery and super-compensation. If you are unable to train normally for a period you should keep this to an absolute minimum and find ways to compensate (e.g. leg & core strength workouts, walking, jogging, swimming…)
  • Build the strongest possible aerobic base , so you can keep riding for as long as it takes. To do this, we recommend you train predominantly at low intensity, below LT1 [1] , the point at which the lactate concentration in your blood starts to increase above the baseline. This is quite likely to be much lower than the current level at which you train. It’s important to understand that training at this low intensity provides the endurance adaptations you need without adding unnecessary fatigue, thus allowing you to train more.
  • Develop your fat-burning capacity, to conserve your glycogen stocks during the long climbs and thus your ability to climb hard for longer. Metabolic adaptation is a real differentiator between successful and unsuccessful riders at the Tour du Mont Blanc (as it is at Ironman™ triathlons). It is simply not possible to consume enough carbohydrate during the ride to fuel it adequately and therefore the more you can use your fat stores the better you will perform.
  • Build your pain tolerance. Endurance is “ the struggle to continue against a mounting desire to stop ” [2] . For many people this struggle begins in earnest on the col du Petit Saint Bernard, when there is still 100km left to ride and 3,000m to climb. There’s no escaping the fact that the Tour du Mont Blanc is going to make you suffer. The better you can train yourself to tolerate the pain and discomfort as it becomes more and more pressing, the more likely you are to finish.
  • Increase the load progressively. Your body needs time to adapt to an increased training load. It’s possible to go from an average of 10h per week to as much as 30h during a one-off training camp, but such an increase is not sustainable and would lead inevitably to over-training. A good rule of thumb is to increase the average by between 5% and 10% per week.
  • Rest and recover, to allow your body to adapt and get stronger. Remember, hard training actually breaks you down and makes you weaker! You only get stronger when your body has the time to recover, adapt and rebuild. There should be a big difference between your hardest and your easiest training weeks.
  • Monitor your readiness to take on high load . The best way to do this is with HRV (Heart Rate Variability), which provides insights to the state of your parasympathetic nervous system and therefore the stress you are under. Research has shown that training when you are stressed (low HRV) provides little or no benefit and may even be harmful. We recommend monitoring your RHR (Resting Heart Rate) and HRV every morning as soon as you wake up. If RHR is significantly higher than normal and/or HRV significantly lower, train easy or not at all. For more on this read here .
  • Include exercises to develop your technical skills , and not only physiological capacity. These might include low cadence while climbing, high cadence while riding on the flat, cornering, riding in a group, taking clothes on and off while riding, etc.

Note that the Tour du Mont Blanc is an exceptional event in terms of distance, climbing and thus the time taken to finish. The training guidelines we give here are quite different from those we give for the Marmotte, for example. For the Tour du Mont Blanc, the focus is almost exclusively on building endurance and related skills.

Our training plan framework begins on November 1 st . This is the traditional start to a new cycling season, and gives you a little over eight months remaining to finalise your preparations for the event, which, as we have already noted, should be worked up to over several years.

A key assumption is that you will continue to ride regularly on the roads throughout the period. If this is not possible, you will have to compensate by doing long rides on the turbo and ideally by joining a training camp in the early part of the year in a warm-weather location such as southern Spain or Portugal, Mallorca or Tenerife.

To finalise your preparations, plan a training camp in the mountains in May or June and ride as much as possible in hot weather to acclimatise. Alpine Cols coaching camps are all designed to help you prepare for sportives and GranFondos up to and including the Tour du Mont Blanc.

Alpine Cols coaching camps

tour du mont blanc cycling 2024

3. Your Training Plan: Overview and Structure

Our suggested framework includes three phases: Preparation , Pre-Competition and Competition . Each phase is then broken down into 4-week cycles including 3 load weeks and 1 recovery week, with a target training load for each week. If you are over 50, consider adopting a 3-week cycle of 2 load weeks and 1 recovery week.

It’s important to understand that such a structure is essentially arbitrary and takes no account of the total stress you will be under (life stress + training stress) on any particular day. Current best practice is to monitor readiness to train, using a combination of daily HRV (Heart Rate Variability) measurements with perceptions of fatigue and muscle soreness, and to adjust the plan accordingly. If you feel very tired, have sore muscles and your HRV is below the normal range, it would be better either to take a very easy day or not to train at all until you have recovered. Research has shown that training when you are stressed (low HRV) provides little or no benefit and may even be harmful. Read here for more on how to use HRV to guide your training .

Remember that hard training breaks you down: you only get stronger during recovery!

In terms of intensity distribution, we recommend that for all but the very strongest riders you make your entire training for the Tour du Mont Blanc Polarised (90% low intensity, 10% high intensity).

Download the training plan

4. Your Training Plan: by Period

4.1 preparation phase: november-april.

The key objectives in this period are to accustom your body to training 10-15 hours per week and to build a strong aerobic base. Given the exclusively aerobic nature of the Tour du Mont Blanc, there is a much lower emphasis on HIT than in most training plans.

The training intensity distribution during this phase should be Polarised , meaning 90% of your training should be at low intensity and only 10% at high intensity. The percentage split is calculated on the basis of training session hours, not actual time at high intensity. A typical HIT session will last one hour (and should be counted as such) even though the actual time at high intensity may be no more than 10-20 minutes. If you add 5-10 sprints in a 4h low intensity ride, count this as 3h LIT and 1h HIT.

In practice this means that only one ride per week should include a significant amount of high intensity work.

You should completely avoid training at medium intensity (tempo or sweet-spot), because in this context it would create too much fatigue for too little benefit.

4.1.1 Preparation Phase, on the bike training

  • Aerobic endurance : progressing to 6-7h rides at intensity below LT1, the point at which the lactate concentration in your blood starts to increase above the baseline (usually less than 60-65% of your HRmax or FTP). If in doubt, err on the cautious side. The rides should FEEL slow (and only become tiring after 3h or more. Aerobic endurance is by far the most important quality you need to build and you should spend ~90% of your training on this.

Riding slowly may sound incredibly boring and it certainly takes some adaptation, not least in your mindset. Read here for tips on how to help the time pass on long slow rides .

If you are unable to ride outside you will have to do long sessions on your turbo trainer. Read here for suggestions on how to make these more tolerable .

  • Fat-burning capacity: Progress towards this by limiting your intake of refined sugar and high glycaemic-index carbs, both on and of the bike. Do at least one long low-intensity ride per week partially or fully fasted, and only begin to eat on the bike after the first two hours (later three hours, then even four).

A good overall macro-nutrient split in terms of total kCal consumed has been shown to be 48% from carbohydrate, 24% from protein and 28% from fat [3] . Obviously each food item should be as high quality and as natural as possible. Avoid processed foods.

Finally, remember to adjust your food intake to your energy expenditure: eat more during high load weeks and cut back during recovery weeks. Keep an eye on the scales to be sure that any weight loss is slow and progressive: the priority at this stage is to fuel your training! Read here for more on nutrition while training for the TMB .

  • High intensity : multiple short efforts at intervals ranging from 7 second sprints out to 5 minutes. Some of these efforts should be done at low cadence and will help build leg strength and climbing ability.

The purpose of these HIT sessions targeting the upper end of your power distribution curve is twofold: (1) increase your power at longer durations, and (2) increase your pain tolerance.

You should do no more than one per week, approximately ~10% of your training, and none during the recovery weeks.

  • Technical limiters : e.g. descending, cornering, etc. Take every opportunity on your long rides to practice technical skills. If you are not a confident descender, consider joining a training camp in the mountains with a coaching team qualified to teach you to do this. At an Alpine Cols camp we organise specific exercises to improve descending and cornering, using video recordings and individual feedback.

4.1.2 Preparation Phase, off the bike training

You may not be used to off-the-bike training. Nevertheless, it can have a significant impact on your performance. To cycle faster, you need to push harder on the pedals, which means you need not only stronger leg muscles but also greater core strength to stabilise and channel the extra force. The best way to strengthen your muscles is off the bike, using appropriate exercises and good technique. Furthermore, adaptation depends on occasional changes in the training stimulation and the off-the-bike exercises are important for avoiding injury.

  • Strength and conditioning : one or two sessions per week, ideally guided by a Strength and Conditioning coach with experience in cycling.

If you are new to this, err on the side of caution to limit the risk of injury. Good exercises to begin with include squats, lunges, planks, bridges and roll-downs. All of these require correct technique to be beneficial.

  • Flexibility and stretching : two to three 20’ sessions per week. Pilates or Yoga can be extremely beneficial.

Learning correct technique is vital so choose a practitioner who knows cycling and only takes small groups (or better still runs one-on-one sessions).

  • Complement occasionally with other sports: walking, running, swimming, etc. If cycling is your only sport you will build up imbalances and soft tissue problems over time.

4.2. Pre-Competition Phase: April to June.

The key objectives during this phase are to increase the training load to up to 20 hours per week or more and to reinforce your aerobic base by increasing the length of your long rides, while continuing to reinforce your fat-burning capacity. Unless you are a particularly strong rider, we don’t recommend HIT during this period, since HIT will create too much fatigue for too little benefit.

4.2.1 Pre-Competition Phase, on the bike training

  • Aerobic endurance : continuing long rides at low intensity, progressing to a 10h ride by mid-June, with as much climbing as possible.

In spite of the low intensity, these long rides are exhausting so you cannot attempt too many, and there is no need to do more than ~60% of the event time and distance in any one training ride. Better to spread it over the weekend and work up to, for example, one 10h ride on Saturday and one 6h ride on Sunday (or vice-versa), followed by taking Monday, Wednesday and Friday off and doing no more than a short recovery spin on Tuesday and Thursday.

Either do these long rides alone or with an understanding training mate; best to avoid the weekend club run which will be too fast for what you need at this time.

  • Fat-burning capacity: continue along the lines laid out for the Preparation phase. It is important to keep the macro-nutrient balance close to the recommended split (based on kCal): 48% from carbohydrate, 24% from protein and 28% from fat.

It is equally important to ensure that you are fuelling your training adequately as well as not over-eating during recovery weeks. Keep a close eye on the kCal expended per ride (as reported by apps such as Strava) to guide how much you should eat.

Read here for more on nutrition for the TMB .

  • Recovery : short rides, 60-90 minutes, strictly at a very low intensity. Make the easy weeks EASY. If the hardest weeks have pushed you close to your limit, then the easy weeks will need to be easier than normal, otherwise you will overtrain and lose the benefit.
  • Test equipment and nutrition options : your long rides are also the perfect opportunity to try out different equipment options under different weather conditions, and to test different nutrition and hydration choices. Better find out now what doesn’t work!

4.2.2 Pre-Competition Phase, off the bike training

  • Strength and conditioning : one session per week, focused on maintaining the strength of your legs and core.
  • Flexibility and stretching : as in the previous phase it is vital to maintain these sessions to keep your body flexible. Do two to three 20’ sessions per week.
  • Other activities : optional, as desired. We recommend an occasional swim or perhaps a 1-2h walk.

4.2.3 General

  • Maximise your sleep . This is essential for recovery and adaptation. You should aim at a minimum of 7h per night, preferably 8h, and try to wake up naturally, without an alarm-clock. Banish all screens from the bedroom.
  • Minimum travel, minimum stress : the more you can avoid adding to the stress on your body, the better off you will be. This is certainly easier said than done but it is possible to learn psychological coping strategies to reduce the impact of the most stressful events that life can throw at you.

4.3. Competition Phase: taper for the last 2-3 weeks

The key objective in this period is to eliminate fatigue without losing fitness, so that you arrive on the start line the fittest you have ever been, but also super-fresh and thus able to go the distance. The longer the event, the longer the taper: if you would normally taper 7 days prior to a typical event, taper 14 days for the Tour du Mont Blanc.

4.3.1 Competition Phase, on the bike

Progressively reduce your training volume by at least 50%. For example, if on the last weekend in June you do your final long rides, totalling 15h over two days, you might do two 1h recovery rides on Tuesday and Thursday, followed by riding 10h in two rides over the first weekend in July, a further two recovery rides during the week and no more than 6-7h total (in two rides) on the final weekend.

Ideally, you should arrive in Les Saisies 2-3 days before the start. Do a couple of short rides to spin the legs but nothing that will add fatigue.

4.3.2 Competition Phase, off the bike

The need for sleep, good quality nutrition and minimum stress are even more acute during the taper. The better you can plan to sleep well, eat well and avoid stress, the better off you will be…

Download the training plan . Remember, it is up to you to adapt it depending on your personal situation.

[1] Ideally, you should determine LT1 via a lactate test. Failing this, you can estimate it by paying very careful attention to your breathing while starting at a very low intensity and increasing slowly. Your LT1 will be the point where you first feel the need to start breathing more deeply. For the majority of people, LT1 will be in the range 60-65% of FTP or 60-65% of HRmax

ACTIVITY LEVEL

The minimum technical ability required for E-MTB Tour du Mont Blanc is Intermediate. This trip is suitable if you have been riding consistently for two or more years and can climb and descend under control on moderately steep singletrack with loose rocks or roots. It is important to be fit for this adventure, the accumulation of multiple long days of riding will add up, as it is on all of our trips the fitter you are, the more fun you’ll have.

The singletrack trails are old hiking paths and are linked by sections of gravel and asphalt roads and doubletrack and accessed by a few lifts but mostly climbing. Trail surfaces feature fixed rocks and rock gardens, with some dirt in lower sections, switchbacks and steep sections. Expect some exposure at times, mostly open alpine riding and some forested sections in lower valleys.

LODGING AND CUISINE

On this adventure we spend all seven nights at small, cosy, family-run hotels with private rooms. Your luggage will be moved from hotel to hotel each day. The cuisine on this trip is typical of each region. Please notify Big Mountain Bike Adventures if you have any special dietary needs.

In big mountains, weather can change quickly and drastically – it could be 30 degrees Celsius one day and then freezing on a mountaintop the next day. Summertime in the Alps are typically beautiful, however it can rain and sometimes even snow, so we have to be prepared for all types of weather conditions.

YOUR SAFETY

Our trips take place in remote regions with limited evacuation options available. Our guides have basic first aid training, if a serious injury is suspected they will call helicopter search and rescue at the cost of the participant. Personal medical travel insurance is mandatory for all riders. If you choose to participate in our trips it is up to you to ride well within your limits, to ride conservatively, to walk sections if needed and to be safe as mountain biking is a dangerous sport. There are always risks and hazards on all trails that we ride. It is your responsibility to inspect your bike or rental bike daily and keep it in excellent condition. Helmets are mandatory and alcohol and drugs are not permitted while riding your bike.

THE NEXT STEPS

Please read and understand our Terms and Conditions and our Waiver. Then, email or call us to make sure that your desired departure is confirmed and there’s still space available. We’ll then send you a short Rider Questionnaire to learn about your riding experience and ensure that you are suitable for the trip. The last step is to complete our secure online Registration Form and pay your 25% deposit, and we’ll send you detailed Trip Preparation Guide that includes steps on preparing for your adventure.

The Tour du Mont-Blanc is the most famous trail running route in the world, and for good reason. Wandering over mountain trails from France, to Italy, to Switzerland and back into France, the “TMB” footpath includes some of the most iconic mountain terrain anywhere.

tour du mont blanc cycling 2024

We’ll kick off the trip with a day of running one of Chamonix’s famed, high “balconies,” in one of the world’s great trail running locations. Then, we’ll take our time and run highlights of the TMB in seven running days, covering 10 – 20 miles and one mountain pass each day. Our overnights will include a mix of remote mountain inns and comfortable hotels in and around the Mont Blanc Massif, including Chamonix, France; Courmayeur, Italy; and La Fouly, Switzerland.

tour du mont blanc cycling 2024

Our route differs slightly from the standard Tour du Mont-Blanc and the famous ultra trail race of the same name. Where the race course takes less scenic routes, we diverge for better views and more enjoyable running. An option exists to follow the race route, for those who want it.

Two opportunities of note: the longer July trip allows participants to run one of the several trail races that are part of the Gran Trail Courmayeur race series. (If you want to race, note so on your registration form and we will follow up with you. Here’s additional information .) Second, the tour at the end of August will overnight in Courmayeur on the evening that runners pass through the village on their way around Mont Blanc, so there will be a unique opportunity to cheer on the world’s best mountain runners.

tour du mont blanc cycling 2024

Our typical day on the Tour du Mont Blanc Run starts with a continental buffet breakfast at our inn, and soon we’ll be out on the trail. With many passes to cross, the hiking and running is challenging, but there will also be opportunities for easier days. Our tour will go counter-clockwise around Mont Blanc, starting in Chamonix, then through Italy and into Switzerland, before coming back to Chamonix. Several optional transfers allow for shorter days days that get us right to the best trail running.

tour du mont blanc cycling 2024

Most of these stages can be hiked in a full day or run in a bit more than half a day, and we should finish each day with plenty of time to relax. Your bags will be transferred separately, each night. In the evening we’ll enjoy dinner together at our inn or a nearby restaurant. These are multi-course feasts featuring local French, Italian and Swiss specialties, and will be hearty, filling, well-earned, and very delicious. We will leave one dinner in Courmayeur free, where you will have a chance to explore on your own.

After one of our favorite breakfasts on the tour, a second day in Courmayeur gives you a chance to rest and soak in the hot spring spa at nearby Pré Saint Didier. For those who want to run, the area around Courmayeur is filled with beautiful, quiet single track and huts serving delicious treats, cappuccino, and wine!

We’ll head up to Rifugio Bertone and run some of the best single track on the tour, stopping at the stunning Rifugio Bonatti for lunch. Then it’s time to tackle the ascent of Grand Col Ferret, and cross the border to descend to the quiet Swiss village of La Fouly.

Tour de France 2024 - The GC favourites form guide

A look at how the men targeting yellow fared in their opening races of the season

Tadej Pogacar and Jonas Vingegaard are once again the front-runners for Tour de France glory after strong starts to 2024

Everybody takes a different path to the Tour de France , but all the contenders for overall victory in Nice have now started their seasons. Jonas Vingegaard got off to a thunderous start with wins at O Gran Camiño and Tirreno-Adriatico, while Tadej Pogačar delivered yet another performance for the ages at Strade Bianche .

Elsewhere, Remco Evenepoel and Primoz Roglič met at Paris-Nice , even if Visma-Lease A Bike issued an ominous warning about their strength in depth when Matteo Jorgenson carried off final overall victory.

Making comparisons between riders lining out in different races never makes for an exact science, but clashes between the ‘Big Four’ of favourites will be infrequent between now and July.

With that in mind, we present the first 2024 instalment of our ranking of the favourites for Tour victory.

1. Jonas Vingegaard

  • Team: Visma-Lease A Bike
  • Tour Experience: Winner in 2022 and 2023, runner-up in 2021
  • 2024 results: 1st & three stage wins at O Gran Camiño, 1st & two stage wins at Tirreno-Adriatico

The 2022 and 2023 Tour de France winner avoided a showdown against Remco Evenepoel and Primož Roglič at Paris-Nice, but he perhaps regretted it after dominating Tirreno-Adriatico with a show of superb early-season form.

The Dane won both mountain stages in the Italian stage race, surging away from Juan Ayuso, Jai Hindley et al when he felt like it to win alone and gain significant time. He was clearly on another level.

“The season is not only about the Tour de France. It’s better to try to do something now, win some races and win as much as possible,” Vingegaard suggested, clearly happy and at ease after riding so well at Tirreno-Adriatico.

“I was in shape last year but for some other things, I didn’t perform that well, but I always believed in myself and my form. I think my level is still improving and I hope I can improve more for the Tour de France. I know I can peak in July.”

Vingegaard confirmed he is unlikely to ride the Ardennes Classics. Itzulia Basque Country is next but without a spell at altitude beforehand.

“I’m looking forward to racing those two guys too,” Vingegaard said of Roglič and Evenepoel, with genuine enthusiasm and a sense of a challenge.

“It was a good peloton here, but they are some of the best riders in the world, so you have to compare yourself against them. To be the best rider in the world, you have to beat those guys.”

2. Tadej Pogacar

  • Team: UAE Team Emirates
  • Tour Experience: Winner in 2020 and 2021, runner-up in 2022 and 2023
  • 2024 results: 1st at Strade Bianche

Tadej Pogačar has different ambitions from his Tour de France rivals and different characteristics as a rider, so he has a very different race programme from everyone else.

He is targeting the Giro d’Italia-Tour de France double and so is racing less in the spring to stay fresh and prepare to be at his best in May and then again in July.

The UAE Team Emirates leader dominated Strade Bianche with his 81 km solo attack but then skipped Tirreno-Adriatico, making Milan-San Remo his second race day of the season. The Volta a Catalunya will be the only stage race of the spring, with Liège-Bastogne-Liège his last race coming after an altitude camp before starting the Giro d’Italia in Turin on May 4.

“I have a really nice programme. I can be excited for each race,” Pogačar said after his Strade Bianche win, confirming he has enjoyed a productive pre-season and is already on great form and on track for his Giro-Tour double attempt.

“I’ve got back all the confidence that I maybe lost after the crash last year. It was a really great winter for me, I had really great preparation and I’ve got confirmation that all is good.”

A one-day race is no confirmation of Tour de France form, but Pogačar appears happier than ever after several months at home. He has a spring in his step and a smile on his face, a terrible sign for his rivals of what is likely to come in 2024.

3. Remco Evenepoel

  • Team: Soudal-QuickStep
  • Tour Experience: Debutant
  • 2024 results: 1st at Figueira Champions Classics, 1st & stage win at Volta ao Algarve, 2nd & stage win at Paris-Nice

Remco Evenepoel started his year in a similar manner to Vingegaard and Pogačar by delivering a remarkable solo exhibition at the Figueira Champions Classic. Later in the week, he ran through his scales on very familiar terrain at the Volta ao Algave, winning the race for the third time and in the usual manner, by dominating the time trial and tracking everything on the two summit finishes.

From the friendly confines of Portugal, Evenepoel moved on to new ground in March. Prior to this year, Evenepoel’s lone excursions across the Franco-Belgian border had come at the Chrono des Nations. With his Tour debut on the horizon, Evenepoel figured he might as well spend a bit more time on French roads, and so he opted for Paris-Nice over Tirreno-Adriatico or the Volta a Catalunya.

The Race to the Sun didn’t go entirely to plan for Evenepoel, though it was far from a disaster either, as he picked up second place overall and a stage win in Nice . His overall challenge was ultimately undone by the tactical error that allowed Matteo Jorgenson out of his sight on stage 6, but it will surely be a nagging concern that one of Vingegaard’s Visma-Lease A Bike domestiques dealt so ably with his onslaught on the final stage.

“It’s not yet the best Remco, but we’re getting there,” said Evenepoel, who will measure himself against Vingegaard at Itzulia Basque Country before an anticipated head-to-head with Pogačar at Liège-Bastogne-Liège.

Unlike his rivals, Evenepoel hasn’t yet trained at altitude in 2024, and he won’t do so until after the Ardennes. By his reckoning, there is still ample margin for improvement before July. “We can already be very positive with the feeling that we now have without altitude.”

4. Primoz Roglic

  • Team: Bora-Hansgrohe
  • Tour Experience: Runner-up in 2020, fourth in 2018, three stage wins
  • 2024 results: 10th at Paris-Nice

Primož Roglič remains in our top four on pedigree rather than performance, given that his 10th place at Paris-Nice marked his worst finish in a stage race of any description since he placed 15th overall at the same event in 2021. That statistic doesn’t tell the full story, of course, as Roglič crashed on the final day of that edition of Paris-Nice while wearing the yellow jersey.

In reality, then, this was Roglič’s most subdued outing in a stage race since he placed 29th overall at the 2018 Tirreno-Adriatico. In his subsequent 27 stage race appearances, Roglič crashed out on four occasions (three times at Grand Tours), but he finished on the podium 20 times out of his 23 finishes. The exceptions came at the 2018 Tour de France (4th), 2021 Paris-Nice (15th) and 2022 Itzulia Basque Country (8th).

What does this mean for Roglič’s prospects of Tour victory in July? Probably less than you think. His showing here was entirely in keeping with the vision Bora-Hansgrohe performance manager Rolf Aldag laid out at the team’s media day in January. In his Jumbo-Visma era, Roglič tended to win early and often. At Bora, Aldag insisted, the Tour is the only win that matters, and his programme has been designed accordingly.

“Where we want to clash with the ‘Big Four’ is at the Tour de France,” Aldag explained back then, with Roglič adding that it would be a “bonus” if he got victories before July. The Slovenian certainly looked a long way short of his usual March sharpness at Paris-Nice, but perhaps that’s just all part of the grand design for his fresh approach to the Tour.

Roglič never appeared in any undue difficulty during the week either, though as Philippa York pointed out, Bora-Hansgrohe’s tactical approach to the team time trial left much to be desired . For now, the 34-year-old appears content to fly under the radar, but Itzulia Basque Country will give a better indication of his progress.

5. Juan Ayuso

  • 2024 results: 2nd at Ruta del Sol, 1st at Faun Ardéche Classic, 2nd at Faun Drôme Classic, 3rd at Trofeo Laigueglia, 2nd overall & stage win at Tirreno-Adriatico

Juan Ayuso’s career has always been on a fast track and will accelerate even more this summer when he makes his Tour de France debut alongside Tadej Pogačar. He will be the Slovenian’s understudy, his apprentice and domestique. If Pogačar struggles during or after the Tour de France, then Ayuso will be ready to step up and play an even bigger role.

UAE Team Emirates also have Adam Yates and João Almeida in their 2024 Tour de France long list, but Ayuso arguably offers more potential. He is still only 21 but was third in the 2022 Vuelta a Espana and fourth last year after a disrupted season.

He was unable to match Jonas Vingegaard on the Tirreno-Adriatico climbs but that only gave him more motivation for the four months before this year’s Tour de France.

“If you want to be the best, you have to beat the best. To have these opportunities to race against the best riders in the world is very nice and motivating,” Ayuso told Cyclingnews in Italy.

“I wanted to get to know the Tour this year, the team thought it was a good idea, so that's the plan for 2024.

“The Tour is the biggest dream cyclists can have, and I think I moved one step forward last year. I’m a bit closer now to the guys that are at the top. With the winter and during the season before the Tour, I hope I can climb another big step and be ready.

6. Adam Yates

  • Tour experience: 7 appearances. 3rd overall in 2024, 4th overall in 2016
  • 2024 results: 1st & stage win Tour of Oman. DNF UAE Tour

Yates’ podium finish at last year’s Tour demonstrated that he is more than simply a luxury domestique, but a potential auxiliary leader should mishap befall Pogačar.

The Briton enjoyed a career year in his first season at UAE Team Emirates, winning the UAE Tour, Tour de Romandie and the Grand Prix de Montréal, and he started his 2024 campaign on a similarly buoyant note by conquering Green Mountain to take overall victory at the Tour of Oman.

The concussion sustained in a crash at the UAE Tour , however, has since arrested Yates’ progress. UAE Team Emirates took Yates out of that race as soon as the extent of his injury became clear, and, sagely, they also kept him out of the line-up for Tirreno-Adriatico.

It’s not yet certain when Yates will return to action. With Pogačar leading the line for UAE at the Volta a Catalunya, the Briton might be held back for Itzulia Basque Country or even the Tour de Romandie.

7. Simon Yates

  • Team: Jayco-AlUla
  • Tour experience: 6 appearances. 4th overall 2024. Two stage wins in 2019
  • 2024 results: 7th at Tour Down Under, 1st & stage win AlUla Tour

Like his brother, Simon Yates picked up a win on the Arabian Peninsula in February with a sponsor-pleasing victory at the Alula Tour . As ever in Saudi Arabia, there wasn’t considerable depth in the field, but winning is a useful habit nonetheless, and Yates overcame UAE’s strength in numbers to claim the concluding stage and final overall victory.

Having begun his campaign early with seventh overall at the Tour Down Under, Yates opted against racing Paris-Nice or Tirreno-Adriatico. Instead, the Briton will ride both the Volta a Catalunya and Itzulia Basque, giving himself a chance to measure himself against all of the ‘Big Four’ across the two events.

Vingegaard, Pogačar et al may be on a different level from Yates, but the 31-year-old remains a consistent yet strangely underrated performer. Expect him to be in the mix in late March and April.

8. Sepp Kuss

  • Tour experience: Four appearances. 12th overall in 2023. Stage winner in 2021
  • 2024 results: 6th at Clásica Jaén, 8th at Volta ao Algarve, DNF at Strade Bianche

Victory at last year’s Vuelta a España has surely changed Kuss’ ambitions for the summer, but it doesn’t appear to have unduly altered his approach to the early season.

While others at Visma-Lease A Bike – chiefly Vingegaard, Matteo Jorgenson and Jan Tratnik – have made fast starts to 2024, Kuss has been solid rather than spectacular in his first outings of the new campaign.

Kuss was sixth at the Clásica Jaén and he looked assured on the explosive summit finishes at the Volta ao Algarve, though a poor time trial restricted him to eighth overall. He was rather less impressive in abandoning Strade Bianche a week later, but the gravel event was something like bonus territory for the American.

A truer indication of his form will come when he races on familiar terrain at the Volta a Catalunya. In the absence of Vingegaard, it’s also a clear opportunity for Kuss to take the reins of leadership before he links up with the Dane for the first time this season at next month’s Itzulia Basque Country.

The chasing pack

The 'Big Four' dominate pre-Tour discussion, but the early weeks of the season have again suggested that the road to victory in July will again run through two teams - Visma-Lease A Bike and UAE Team Emirates. For most of the rest of the peloton, there is a gap to be bridged.

Carlos Rodríguez is nominally Ineos’ leader for the Tour after his fifth place finish last year, but the Spaniard has been anonymous in the opening weeks of the season, placing 31st at O Gran Camiño and 28th at Paris-Nice.

His teammate Egan Bernal has been much more impressive. After impressing for the Colombian national team at the Tour Colombia, he proceeded to place third overall at O Gran Camiño and seventh at Paris-Nice. It’s not clear if Bernal will even ride the Tour, far less lead Ineos there, but it is heartening to see his steady, upward trajectory two years on from his life-threatening training crash.

David Gaudu (Groupama-FDJ), on the other hand, will be feeling the pressure after a disastrous Paris-Nice. Twelve months ago, the Frenchman raised his expectations for the Tour by placing second overall in Nice. This time out, his race unravelled when he crashed on the penultimate climb towards Mont Brouilly, and he was a non-starter on the final day. He will hope his season finally ignites at Itzulia Basque Country.

Richard Carapaz (EF Education-EasyPost) was mightily impressive at the Tour Colombia, winning the toughest stage to the Alto del Vino, but the Olympic champion has not yet caught the eye in Europe, finishing well off the pace at O Gran Camiño and crashing out at Tirreno-Adriatico. He usually times things just right for Grand Tours, mind, and he has designs on making an impression at the Ardennes Classics this Spring.

Enric Mas (Movistar) made his season debut at Tirreno-Adriatico, though he was nowhere to be seen when Vingegaard started running through his repertoire later in the week. The Spaniard ended the race in 12th overall, but he will hope to be more prominent at the Volta a Catalunya.

The most impressive member of the chasing pack, however, has been Jai Hindley (Bora-Hansgrohe). The Australian is set for a luxury domestique role in Roglič’s service at the Tour, but his performance and third place overall at Tirreno-Adriatico suggested a man ready to step into a leadership role if required. The 2022 Giro champion will head to Itzulia Basque Country next month with real intent.
