Sundarbans National Park: A Complete Guide

Things to Do

Watchtower sightings, organized tours, where to camp, where to stay nearby, how to get there, accessibility, tips for your visit, sundarban national park (west bengal).

Sundarbans National Park—a UNESCO World Heritage Site — is best known for its magnificent tangle of mangrove trees, encompassing the largest mangrove forest in the world. The park spans 10,000 square kilometers (3,861 square miles) at the mouth of the Ganges and Brahmaputra Rivers, which separates the countries of India and Bangladesh and borders the Bay of Bengal. Approximately 35 percent of the park lies in India, and the remainder is located in Bangladesh. On the Indian side, 102 islands are located within Sundarbans, and just over half of them are inhabited.

The word "sundarban" means "beautiful forest" in the local Bengali dialect. This swampy forest provides a home to a rare breed of Royal Bengal Tigers know to be strong swimmers. Long stretches of nylon net fencing have been installed on forest boundaries to prevent the tigers from venturing into the villages, as it's the only place in the world where tigers still hunt humans for food. Don't go expecting to see one though, as the native tigers usually remain hidden within the park's tiger reserve, a core zone where commercial and tourist activities are prohibited. Along the outskirts, in the Sajnekhali Wildlife Sanctuary, however, visitors can expect sightings of various reptiles, monkeys, wild boar, rare birds, and deer.

The real enjoyment of visiting Sundarbans National Park comes from appreciating its pristine, natural beauty. Sadly, some people are disappointed by their visit, usually because they go with high expectations of spotting tigers. Wildlife spotting is hampered by the fact that you cannot explore the national park on foot or by vehicle. There are no jeep safaris and boats cannot touch down anywhere along the river banks inside the national park.

Instead, take time to wander through enchanted villages, discover the local way of life, and take part in cultural performances. You can even sample honey collected by local villagers in the Sundarbans region.

Tourists can also visit the game watchtowers, the most popular of which—due to their proximity—are Sajnekhali, Sudhanyakhali, and Dobanki. Or, spend the day cruising the waterways by boat on a wager-guided safari, in search of monkeys, crocodiles, water monitor lizards, wild boar, otter, spotted deer, and birds.

Watchtowers located throughout the park provide a way for visitors to safely view wildlife. Three easily accessible towers offer DIY, hassle-free nature viewing for independent travelers. Sajnekhali is a favorite watchtower of birdwatchers, Sudhanyakhali offers you a decent chance of seeing tigers and spotted deer, and Dobanki has a 20-foot-high enclosed canopy for panoramic views of the park and its wildlife.

Other remote watchtowers require a full day of travel by boat to get to, but the reward for the journey is a pristine natural experience, free of crowds. Burir Dabri watchtower is located on the Raimangal River. It's notably picturesque and has a canopy walk over the mangroves that leads to a viewpoint. The ruins of a 400-year-old temple can be found at Netidhopani watchtower. Visitor numbers are limited here and special permits are required. Bonnie Camp is the highest watchtower in Sundarbans, at 50 feet tall. This scenic watchtower takes about six hours to reach from Sajnekhali, yet a rest house provides an overnight stay. Jhingekhali is located on the easternmost fringe of Sundarbans National Park and is often overlooked for its extreme remoteness. Still, this watchtower offers you the best chance of seeing a tiger, as well as several species of rare birds.

There are various ways to go about visiting Sundarbans National Park, and for those who find independent travel to be logistically complicated, an organized tour provides a good option. Organized tours offer a predefined itinerary, including day tours, overnight tours, or multiple-day tours, with accommodations included. Guided tours typically include safari-style boat trips on the waterways to visit watchtowers and villages. And, most tours originate from Kolkata and drop you back off in the same location.

Before embarking on an organized tour, keep in mind a few considerations, like flexibility and privacy. Boat trips organized by hotels and tour operators will usually book a full group of people. Depending on the group's demographics, this could mean a noisy and boisterous experience that spoils the serenity of your visit. Additionally, the bigger boats are not suitable for the narrow waterways, where you're more likely to spot the park's wildlife. If this is a concern, it may be best to make independent arrangements and hire a private guide.

Due to the wildness of this national park, primitive camping is not permitted on the grounds and many of the regional "jungle camps" do not offer tented options either. The one exception is Sunderban Tiger Camp , an eco-resort that offers glamping in canvas-covered huts. Each hut is 261 square feet and can accommodate up to four people on twin beds with Wellness Health Rest mattresses. Each hut has a western-style toilet, cold showers, and a hot water geyser option. Purified water, free Wi-Fi, and a wake-up service are complimentary with your stay.

Given the ecological sensitivity of the Sundarbans area, most accommodations are simple, rather than luxurious, with an eco-friendly focus and a village feel. Power is limited (many hotels run on either solar or electricity produced by a generator), and the bathwater is not always hot. You can also book a houseboat for a completely different experience.

  • United 21 Resort-Sunderban : United 21 offers 18 deluxe, standard, or triple-bedded rooms set in a serene jungle atmosphere. All rooms come complete with air conditioning and modern amenities. An on-site restaurant provides a sampling of several Indian cuisines and jungle safaris can be organized upon request.
  • Sunderban Mangrove Retreat : Located in the Jamespore village on Satjalia island, this serene eco-friendly stay sits on the bank of the river. Choose from one of four air-conditioned executive rooms, eight air-conditioned, double-bedded cottages, or ten non-air-conditioned huts. This pristine property has four on-site ponds for fishing, and the restaurant provides local cuisine, including a catch of the day like crabs, prawns, and a wide variety of fish. The Mangrove Retreat also has two motor-driven boats that you can book for a wildlife water cruise.
  • Sundarban Houseboat : Book a one-night, two-night, or three-night stay, complete with a tour, on a Sundarban houseboat. Rooms on the boat come complete with air-conditioning, LED televisions, attached bathrooms, and freshly-cooked, exotic meals. Multi-day tours include island hopping and visiting remote villages, cruising the mangrove forest, and stopping at the watchtowers.

Sundarbans National Park can only be accessed by boat, as the main entrance is on Sajnekhali Island, where all entry fees are paid. It's located about 100 kilometers (62 miles) southeast of Kolkata in the state of West Bengal , where Netaji Subhash International Airport at Dumdum is situated.

Unfortunately, independent travel to the park is quite laborious. It's best to go either by boat, car, or bus, as the train—a local train that does not take reservations—may be very crowded. You can drive from Kolkata to Godkhali, Sonakhali, Namkhana, Canning, Raidighi, and Najat. Once you arrive, take a ferry or hire a boat to Sajnekhali.

Public buses depart hourly (starting at 6.30 a.m.) from Kolkata to Sonakhali on a three-hour ride. From Sonakhali, take an auto-rickshaw to Godhkali, the gateway village to Sundarbans, and then another boat to Sajnekhali.

Because Sundarbans National Park is remote in nature and surrounded by water, handicapped individuals must book an outfitter who offers special services that cater to their needs. One such option is Rudra Nature’s Sprout Boat. Nature's Sprout offers packages for "differently-abled" individuals that journey only to accessible destinations, while catering to the medical needs of its travelers. They also provide doctors and emergency equipment, should something go array.

  • Foreigners need a permit and a valid passport to enter Sundarbans National Park. A permit can be obtained from the forest department at Sajnekhali or at the West Bengal Tourism Office in Kolkata. If you travel with a tour company, they will make these arrangements for you.
  • There's a boat entry fee for all park zones, and it's compulsory to hire one guide per boat.
  • Pack warm clothes if you're visiting from November to February, as the weather is cool and dry.
  • During the summer (March through June) expect hot and humid weather, and July through September brings rains along with the monsoon season.
  • All plastic is banned in this region, although this rule has been difficult to enforce. Leave plastic water bottles and bags at home, and don't litter.
  • Make sure to carry plenty of cash, as there are no ATMs in the park.
  • Watchtowers are enclosed by fences and are often full of loud, boisterous tourists.
  • Most people spend at least one night at Sundarbans. By staying longer, however, you'll be able to visit more areas, walk or cycle around the villages, go bird watching, and see cultural performances.

Top Tips for Your Sundarbans Adventure

For your trip to the Sundarbans, consider the following advice:

Entry Requirements: Before entering if you’re a foreigner, make sure you have a permit and a current passport if you are a foreigner. Make reservations for permits with a tour operator or the forest department.

Boat Entry and Guide: Recall that a boat entry fee is required and that you must hire a guide for each boat in order to ensure your safety and navigation.

No Plastic Policy: Because plastic is prohibited in the area, refrain from bringing plastic bottles and bags to aid the environment.

Watchtower Awareness: Be mindful of the watchtowers during your visit because they could get busy and noisy.

"Home of the Bengal Tigers"

Sundarbans tourism.

Known for hosting the biggest mangrove forests in the world, Sundarbans National Park is located around 110 Km south of Kolkata in West Bengal, India. It is also a Tiger Reserve and a Biosphere Reserve famous for being the home of the Royal Bengal tigers, among others, including roaring rivers and beautiful estuaries. Sundarbans National Park is a part of the Sundarban delta, which extends into Bangladesh. It is a UNESCO world heritage site with a large variety of birds and animal species, including reptiles such as salt-water crocodiles.

Shared between India and Bangladesh, the Sundarbans meaning beautiful forest, was declared a UNESCO heritage site in 1984. This area has a quiet charm that amazes visitors with the simplicity and uniqueness of its ecological balance despite offering habitat to some of the most dynamic and awe-inspiring flora and fauna. These forests are, in fact, the last remaining stands of the mighty jungles which once covered the Gangetic plains. Since 1966, the Sundarbans have been a wildlife sanctuary, and it is estimated that there are over 400 Royal Bengal Tigers residing in it. This forest has the largest number of Sundari trees. Sundarbans epitomize wilderness with its meandering rivers, springs, creeks and estuaries. It was a declared Tiger Reserve, home to the Royal Bengal Tiger - an almost extinct species that swim in the saline water and are often called man-eaters. Other endangered species in the Bioreserve are Batagur baska, King Crabs, Olive Ridley and Turtles. You can also find jungle fowls, giant lizards, spotted deer, wild boar, and crocodiles in these forests. The Siberian ducks are another famous attraction here. Besides this, there are over 64 varieties of Mangroves such as Goran, Genwa, Dhundal, Garjan, Kankra, Sundari and Passur. Make sure to visit the Nilkamalor Hiron Point and Katka viewpoints, which offer fantastic views of animals in the wilderness. Also, enjoy the mudflats called Chargheri Char, where you can enjoy coastal trekking.

A guide to visiting sundarbans – world’s largest mangrove forest in bangladesh.

A Guide to Visiting Sundarbans in Bangladesh

Sundarbans National park is a part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site and grants sanctuary to around 100 alluring Royal Bengal Tigers, which are still believed to hunt humans for food. Although these rare breeds of strong swimmers are out of sight and remain hidden in the tiger reserves, solo travel still entails signing up for a travel guide.

“Sundarban” is a Bengali word that translates to “ beautiful forest .” It is the most extensive tangle of mangrove trees, at the mouth of Ganges , Brahmaputra , and Meghna Rivers, in the Bay of Bengal. The magnificent forest spans up to 10,000 square kilometers (3,900 sq. miles), of which 35% lies in West Bengal, India , and the rest of it in Khulna division, Bangladesh . An archipelago of 102 islands prevails in the Indian segment of Sundarbans, of which only 54 are inhabited.

The remains of the city of Chand Sadagar in Baghmara Forest Block, the ruins at Netidhopani, the Sundarbans village drawings by Frederic P. Layard, and other historical ramshackle in the Sundarbans give an idea of the history of this delta. If you are planning to solo travel, these spots are a significant tourist attraction.

In the Mughal period, sometime around 200-300 AD, the emperors leased the lands to the residents of Sundarbans. Akbar’s army also warded off criminals to the forests, where tigers later attacked these refugees. Mughals lost most buildings to the hands of salt smugglers and Portuguese pirates in the 16th and 17th centuries.

Sunderbans: The Mystic Mangrove

The British East India Company obtained proprietary rights to the area in 1757, and a Forest Department was established later in the 1800s. Soon in 1865, major forestland was declared reserved under the Forest Act, 1865, and the remaining portions were declared reserved the following year.

Why you should visit Sundarbans

Home to a plethora of wildlife species, Sundarbans is a serene web of littoral mangrove trees that line the border of India and Bangladesh. So what makes these forests unique?

  • The enthralling chance to spot a Royal Bengal Tiger and other exotic species like water monitor, king cobra, or rock python.

Sundarbans Royal Bengal Tiger

  • Throng to Sundarbans if you love birds. Bird watching is the favorite pastime in a spun-out solo travels to these swampy lands.
  • There are more than 60 plant species to gawk at, like the red Kankra flowers or the yellow Khalsi flowers.
  • Take a walk through the enchanting villages of the forest and discover their way of life. If you are nice enough, the local collectors will also let you savor the fresh honey samples.

Mangrove palm (Golpata) at Sundarbans

  • In both group and solo travels, the key motive is to view and photograph the wildlife safely, which can be done through watchtower sightings. Sajnekhali, Sudhanyakhali, Dobanki, and Burir Dabri are famous watchtowers deep in the forest to provide a panoramic view of birds, deers, tigers, etc.
  • If you are bored of regular resorts or hotels, try boat housing this time. With floating boats, feel like you are living on the clouds and enjoy the local cuisine of Sundarbans.

How to visit Sundarbans

From bangladesh:.

Safaris from Dhaka and Khulna are the best way to reach and discover Sundarbans. These are made available by numerous agencies and can stretch from overnight to a week. Here are few agencies offering package trips are:

  • Arranger Tours and Travels, 6 Farazi Para Main Road, Khulna, Tel: +88041723031, +8801817-403070
  • Exotic Holidays Ltd. , Shop # 31-32, 19c/1-A Block-F, Ring road. Mohammadpur, Dhaka-1207. Tel: +8801916886225
  • Pugmark Tours and Travels , KDA Building, Shibbarirmore, Khulna, Tel: +8801715-167740, +8801919-298001

But suppose you want independent trips without involving agencies (which is not recommended for Solo Travels, considering the misadventures). In that case, you can organize a trip from Munshiganj-Satkhira, Khulna, or Mongla. Issuing the permit from the Divisional Forest Office is the first of the many hassles generally taken care of by the agency on your behalf. But once the license is issued, you’ll be able to row a boat from Mongla or Dhangmari to Hiron Point. Then, at last, hire a guide from Hiron Point for strolling through the woods.

Sundarbans Mangrove Forest in Bangladesh

Boatmen will settle for no less than Tk 200 for the trip. For foreigners, the entry fee is 750/day (as charged by the center).

From Kolkata:

Located southeast in West Bengal, the inhabited islands of Sundarbans are accessible via both roadways and railways from Kolkata .

Kaikhali:  Lying at a distance of 92 km from Kolkata airport, it is not so far away from the highest watchtower of Sundarbans, i.e., the Bonnie Camp. This 50 ft tall camp also facilitates an overnight stay. Other sites such as Halliday wildlife sanctuary, Kalas Islands, and the beach are also accessible.

Canning:  Only 45 km from Kolkata, this railway head is nearest to Sundarbans Tiger Project. You can travel via public transportation to Godakhali port as well, which is 29 km away.

Godkhali port:  It is 82 km from Kolkata and 95 km from Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport, Kolkata. It is the last island and is close to the Sajnekhali Wildlife sanctuary and Sundarbans Tiger project.

Namkhana:  Farthest from Kolkata, Namkhana is 123 km from Kolkata airport. It is close to the Lothian wildlife sanctuary and Bhagabatpur crocodile project.

Best time to visit Sundarbans

The winters are the best time to get the best out of your Solo Travel Journey to the Sundarbans. The weather is more pleasant compared to any other time of the year. Also, the chances of wildlife sightings are considerably high. The animals come out from the dense greens at daytime to bask in the warmth of the sun.

Amazing sunrise view from the boat in the Sundarbans

A boat safari is also a good choice for experiencing a lucky encounter with a swimming Bengal Tiger and also enjoying the local food available on these floating boats. So, conclusively, the months from October to March are best suited for a Jungle Safari in Sundarbans Forests.

The other months are not so comfortable for Sundarbans visits for one or the other reason.

The hot temperatures reaching 30-42 degrees Celsius from April to June are too hot and humid for tourists to bear. Moreover, the heavy rainfall of the monsoon from July to September raises river water to dangerous levels.

What to shop

  • Wild Honey extracted from the jaw of the Royal Bengal Tiger is collected by the locals during April – May. You can either sample it or even buy some for yourself or your family.
  • Beautiful articles which the local people skillfully handcraft are good mementos to bring back home or gift your friends and family members after returning from your solo travel.
  • Sundarbans is also famous for its organic brown rice, which is good for your health and tastes terrific.

Where to stay in Sundarbans

Considering the ecological sensitivity and focusing on the eco-friendly aspect of the forests, the stays are given a village feel rather than a luxurious touch. Most hotels run on solar power or a generator. If you want a unique experience, you can choose to stay on a houseboat.

Mid-range Accommodations

  • Sundarbans Tiger Roar Resort

This resort is best for a well-planned trip to Sundarbans for both, a homely experience and no holes in pockets.

  • Solitary Nook Resort

It is a low-key resort in the middle of lush greenery lying 105 km from Kolkata airport; this is the best resort for solo travel . It is 11 km from both Sajnekhali Tiger Reserve and Mangrove Interpretation Centre.

Situated in a unique bioclimatic zone within a typical geographical situation in the coastal region of the Bay of Bengal, it is a landmark of ancient heritage of mythological and historical events. Bestowed with magnificent scenic beauty and natural resources, it is internationally recognized for its high biodiversity of mangrove flora and fauna both on land and water.

The immense tidal mangrove forests of Bangladeshs’ Sundarbans Forest Reserve, is in reality a mosaic of islands of different shapes and sizes, perennially washed by brackish water shrilling in and around the endless and mind-boggling labyrinths of water channels. The site supports exceptional biodiversity in its terrestrial, aquatic and marine habitats; ranging from micro to macro flora and fauna. The Sundarbans is of universal importance for globally endangered species including the Royal Bengal Tiger, Ganges and Irawadi dolphins, estuarine crocodiles and the critically endangered endemic river terrapin (Batagur baska).  It is the only mangrove habitat in the world for Panthera tigris tigris species.

Criterion (ix): The Sundarbans provides a significant example of on-going ecological processes as it represents the process of delta formation and the subsequent colonization of the newly formed deltaic islands and associated mangrove communities. These processes include monsoon rains, flooding, delta formation, tidal influence and plant colonization. As part of the world’s largest delta, formed from sediments deposited by three great rivers; the Ganges, Brahmaputra and Meghna, and covering the Bengal Basin, the land has been moulded by tidal action, resulting in a distinctive physiology.

Criterion (x): One of the largest remaining areas of mangroves in the world, the Sundarbans supports an exceptional level of biodiversity in both the terrestrial and marine environments, including significant populations of globally endangered cat species, such as the Royal Bengal Tiger. Population censuses of Royal Bengal Tigers estimate a population of between 400 to 450 individuals, a higher density than any other population of tigers in the world.

The property is the only remaining habitat in the lower Bengal Basin for a wide variety of faunal species. Its exceptional biodiversity is expressed in a wide range of flora; 334 plant species belonging to 245 genera and 75 families, 165 algae and 13 orchid species. It is also rich in fauna with 693 species of wildlife which includes; 49 mammals, 59 reptiles, 8 amphibians, 210 white fishes, 24 shrimps, 14 crabs and 43 mollusks species. The varied and colourful bird-life found along the waterways of the property is one of its greatest attractions, including 315 species of waterfowl, raptors and forest birds including nine species of kingfisher and the magnificent white-bellied sea eagle.

The Sundarbans is the biggest delta, back water and tidal phenomenon of the region and thus provides diverse habitats for several hundreds of aquatic, terrestrial and amphibian species. The property is of sufficient size to adequately represent its considerably high floral and faunal diversity with all key values included within the boundaries. The site includes the entire landscape of mangrove habitats with an adequate surrounding area of aquatic (both marine and freshwater) and terrestrial habitats, and thus all the areas essential for the long term conservation of the Sundarbans and its rich and distinct biodiversity

The World Heritage property is comprised of three wildlife sanctuaries which form the core breeding area of a number of species of endangered wildlife. Areas of unique natural beauty, ethno botanical interest, special marine faunal interest, rivers, creeks, islands, swamps, estuaries, mud flats, and tidal flats are also included in the property. The boundaries of the property protect all major mangrove vegetation types, areas of high floral and faunal values and important bird areas. The integrity of the property is further enhanced by terrestrial and aquatic buffer zones that surround, but are not part of the inscribed property.

Natural calamities such as cyclones, have always posed threats on the values of the property and along with saline water intrusion and siltation, remain potential threats to the attributes. Cyclones and tidal waves cause some damage to the forest along the sea-land interface and have previoulsy caused occasional considerable mortality among some species of fauna such as the spotted deer. Over exploitation of both timber resources and fauna, illegal hanting and trapping, and agricultural encroachment also pose serious threats to the values of the property and its overall integrity.

Protection and management requirements

The property is composed of three wildlife sanctuaries and has a history of effective national legal protection for its land, forest and aquatic environment since the early 19th century. All three wildlife sanctuaries were established in 1977 under the Bangladesh Wildlife (Preservation) (Amendment) Act, 1974, having first been gazetted as forest reserves in 1878. Along with the Forest Act, 1927, the Bangladesh Wildlife (Preservation) (Amendment) Act 1974, control activities such as entry, movement, fishing, hunting and extraction of forest produces. A number of field stations established within Sundarbans West assist in providing facilities for management staff. There are no recognised local rights within the reserved forest with entry and collection of forest products subject to permits issued by the Forest Department.

The property is currently well managed and regularly monitored by established management norms, regular staff and individual administrative units. The key objective of management is to manage the property to retain the biodiversity, aesthetic values and integrity. A delicate balance is needed to maintain and facilitate the ecological process of the property on a sustainable basis. Another key management priority is the maintenance of ongoing ecological and hydrological process which could otherwise be threatened by ongoing developmental activities outside the property. Subject to a series of successively more comprehensive management plans since its declaration as reserved forest, a focus point of many of these plans is the management of tigers, together with other widlife, as an integral part of forest management that ensures the sustainable harvesting of forest products while maintaining the coastal zone in a way that meets the needs of the local human population. The working plans for the Sundarbans demonstrate a progressive increase in the understanding of the management requirements and the complexity of prescriptions made to meet them.

Considerable research has been conducted on the Sundarbans wildlife and ecosystem. International input and assistance from WWF and the National Zoological Park, the Smithsonian Institution as well as other organisations has assisted with the development of working plans for the property, focusing on conservation and management of wildlife.

The Sundarbans provides sustainable livelihoods for millions of people in the vicinity of the site and acts as a shelter belt to protect the people from storms, cyclones, tidal surges, sea water seepage and intrusion. The area provides livelihood in certain seasons for large numbers of people living in small villages surrounding the property, working variously as wood-cutters, fisherman, honey gatherers, leaves and grass gatherers.

Tourism numbers remain relatively low due to the difficult access, arranging transport and a lack of facilities including suitable accommodation. Mass tourism and its impacts are unlikely to affect the values of the property. While the legal protection afforded the property prohibit a number of activities within the boundaries illegal hunting, timber extraction and agricultural encroachment pose potential threats to the values of the property. Storms, cyclones and tidal surges up to 7.5 m high, while features of the areas, also pose a potential threat with possible increased frequency as a result of climate change.

How to go? It is not practicable to go to the Sundarbans directly from Dhaka, although there were a few ships that used to take this route in the past, but now they are mostly halted or irregular. Moreover, choosing this method of travelling would stretch your trip to 5-6 days on a ship. The easiest and most practiced method is to take a bus to Khulna or Mongla and then your trip provider will set you up on a ship. Although Khulna has better facilities in many ways, the completion of The Padma Bridge has made Mongla a popular docking point as well. Alternatively, you can travel to Jessore by plane and then take a one-hour bus ride to Khulna. Most tour operators provide a 2-3 days tour and then drop guests back at the spot where they were received from. Furthermore, to visit the Sundarbans, a forest permit is required.      Things to know While visiting a forest, there are a few things you ought to keep in mind. Firstly, your attire must be light and simple, and bright colours should be avoided at any cost as they attract wildlife. Furthermore, perfumes cannot be worn. Silence must be maintained at all times and people should walk in a straight line and stay together. Most importantly, visitors must have sharp eyes and stay vigilant all the time as many unprecedented mishaps can occur. Taking a dip in the water is prohibited and so is roaming about without the supervision of forest guards.

Welcome to Sunderban National Park

In Sundarban National Park in West Bengal, the tiger makes his round with an unmatched stealth and grace. The air feels wet and damp, while the silence is interrupted by the melodious singing of birds and roar of motor boats. Inside these world’s largest mangrove forests, creeks and tributaries form an intricate system of networks. Sometimes, they meet each other, and at others, wander off elsewhere. Tourists out on a boat ride are given their money’s worth while crossing them. Even though you are unaware, the big cat and saltwater crocodile observe you at all times, watching every step you make. However, sometimes, look up, as there is action on the trees too. A variety of birds, from brahminy kite to whistling teals, call this their home, and declare that from time to time with a loud cry, song or chirp. More... -->

The Sunderban National Park is many things at once, a biosphere reserve, national park and tiger reserve, such is the richness of this mangrove ecosystem. What we commonly call Sunderbans is actually a large delta spread across 40,000 sq. km between India and Bangladesh! Just to give you an idea of how vast it really is, consider this. It stretches from River Hooghly in West Bengal, India, all the way to River Baleswar in Bangladesh. In this UNESCO World Heritage Site (it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987), the mangrove trees stand lazily on the mudflats, which are visible during low tides, and submerged in height tide. Its name means “beautiful forests” in the local language, and it is not hard to figure why. Another reasons are the Sundari trees, which are dominant in this mangrove area. Their uniqueness lies in their roots which shoot upwards for respiration, particularly during waterlogging during monsoons.

A Short History of Sunderbans Tiger Reserve

The history of Sunderbans can be traced as far back as 200-300 AD. It is believed that the forests of Sunderbans were leased to the nearby residents during the Mughal period, who built settlements in them. In the coming years, however, those settlements were attacked by the Portuguese and salt smugglers in the 17th century. All that remains today are their ruins, most of which can be traced at a place called Netidhopani.

It was in 1875 under the Forest Act, 1865 (Act VIII of 1865) that a large part of these forests were declared as “reserved”. Post-independence, it was declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1977 and established as a national park on 4th May, 1984. In the year 1978, Sundarbans were declared a national park, and in 1973, they were declared a tiger reserve under Project Tiger.

When to Visit Sunderban Park?

The best time to visit Sunderbans is between November to March. The weather is quite pleasant during this time and creates the perfect conditions for tiger sighting and other wildlife. You can also visit it in the summer season, or the months from April to July. Remember though, that it can get very hot during this time, with the average temperature being 43°C. A lot of tourists find the heat quite difficult to deal with, but shouldn’t pose a problem for you if you are okay with it. Monsoons are not a good time to visit Sundarbans, as most of the areas are flooded and taking a boat ride would be quite unfeasible.

Geography of Sundarban Forest

Among other things, it is the unique geography of Sunderbans which endears it to the tourists. It is a part of the world’s largest delta and home to the largest mangrove forests. In its brackish waters, mudflats and trees, reside an incredible variety of flora and fauna. It is these, along with the vegetation, that makes this place what it is, a mystery which unfolds itself with every single visit. The vast Sunderbans also houses within it rivers, islands and villages.

Flora: Inside the dense forests of Sunderbans National Park reside a rich variety of flora. The 64 plant species which are found however, have learned to survive in brackish waters and saline inundation. Some of the common species of plants which are found include Sundari tree, Golpati, Champa, Dhundul, Genwa and Hatal. It is estimated that there are about 78 species of mangroves in these forests. They are extremely important because of the important role they play in the survival of marine organisms. From a distance, these halophytes exude an aura of mystery, who knows what the darkness within has to offer.

Fauna: Wildlife tourism is a major factor behind tourists visiting Sunderbans, and rightly so. After all, you’ve heard that it is home to a rich variety of wildlife, with the Royal Bengal Tigers enjoying a large presence. Nothing makes the tourists more excited than a tiger sighting. While that majestic cat certainly deserves all the attention and spotlight, there are other kinds of birds and wildlife animals who call these mangrove forests their home.

Apart from the Royal Bengal Tiger, other animals found in these areas are fishing cats, macaques, leopard cats, Indian grey mongoose, wild boar, flying fox, pangolin, and Indian grey mongoose. The chital deer and rhesus monkey are common sightings.

Sundarban is also famous for its marine life, and is quite rich in it. A crocodile seated leisurely on a mudflat, basking in the afternoon sun, draws an array of reactions from onlookers. Other than the saltwater crocodile, other kinds of aqua life include red fiddler crabs and hermit crabs. While many people may not be aware of it, but Sundarban National Park is home to a large number of reptiles. Some of the more famous ones are water monitor, king cobra and rock python.

A species of river turtles called Batagur Baska (which are classified as endangered by the IUCN) are found on the Mechau Beach. They are identified by their small head, a snout which always goes upwards and an olive brown colored carapace. The barking deer also deserves a special mention, as it is found at a place called Haliday Island.

Rivers: The Sundarbans delta is formed by the coming together of three rivers, Ganga, Brahmaputra and Meghna. Besides these three main rivers, there are three other rivers which form an intriguing network of channels.

Islands: There are a number of islands dotting this region, and some of them are attractions in themselves. The most famous of them are Kalash, Henry and Netidhopani.

Villages: A number of villages lie in close proximity to Sunderbans National Park like Pakhiralay, Dayapur, Bali and Sajnekhali. Village walks are popular among tourists because they offer a glimpse into the traditional lifestyle of the villagers. While visiting one of these villages, you can also observe the traditional method of honey collection.

Safari Timing

Sunderbans National Park offers only boat safari to the visitors. Jeep safaris are not conducted here. The safari timing is from 8:30 AM in the morning till 4:00 PM in the evening. The entry of boats after 6:30 PM is prohibited. Although the park remains open throughout the year, however, winter season is the best time to visit it.

Top 8 Sundarban Tourist Places.

Sundarban Tourist Places West Bengal is a treasure trove for people who enjoy the odd meeting with the bizarre parts of day-to-day life, and Sundarban is one of the state’s most popular tourist destinations.

You may experience all of these things in Bengal, whether you are in Shantiniketan, the Sunderbans, or Kolkata, and they include art and culture, the wonderful outdoors, and even historical tours through the past.

Today, we are going to have a look at the best 8 spots in the Sunderbans. This is not your usual green haven; it is home to a variety of species that are uncommon elsewhere in India, including a well-known breed of tiger that bears the location’s name.

This is not your typical green hideaway. In addition to being extremely rare, this area is home to both mangroves and trees that have their roots buried in water. Make plans to visit as soon as you can if you want to live out your fantasy of being a Bounty Hunter on an African safari. Let’s learn more about the tourist spots in the Sundarbans.

1. Netidhopani: ( Sundarban Tourist Places )

2. sudhanyakhali watchtower: (sundarban tourist places), 3. sajnekhali watchtower:, 4. haliday island wildlife sanctuary, 6. the piyali river:, 7. the bhagabatpur:, 8. hiron point, when planning a trip to the sundarbans national park, keep these things in mind..

The Netidhopani Watch Tower serves as a demarcation between the Buffer Area and the Core Area of the Sundarbans National Park. The Netidhopani Watch Tower used to be very accessible to visitors, however, these days there are only very restricted visitor numbers allowed there.

As with the month of April in the year 2020, there will only be twelve boat licenses available each day that do not require a reservation. India Beacons will take care of securing Netidhopani Permits and a Netidhopani boat for any guests who book one of our tours which includes a stop at the Netidhopani village.

The Sajnekhali Eco-Tourism Center, or simply Sajnekhali as it is more commonly referred to, serves as the nerve center of the Sundarbans Tiger Reserve. In addition to it, the headquarters of the Forest Department can be found here.

In order to travel to the Sundarban Tiger Reserve, you are going to need to obtain authorization from this location first. Let’s learn more about the tourist destinations in the Sundarbans.

The Sajnekhali Complex is home to a number of attractions, including the River Terrapin (Batagur Baska) Pond, the River Terrapin Hatching Center, the Crocodile Pond, the Mangrove Interpretation Center, also known as the Sajnekhali Museum, and the Bono Bibi Temple.

All of these can be found within the complex. The Sajnekhali watchtower is located within the complex that is known as the Sajnekhali Eco-Tourism Range.

The Sajnekhali watchtower is quite famous among tourists due to the fact that it is located in close proximity to a number of resorts in the Sundarbans. It offers a breathtaking view of the forest in addition to the possibility of spotting a wide range of uncommon birds, such as sandpipers, kingfishers, pelicans, curfews, and other species – making it an absolute treat for people who enjoy bird watching and who are passionate about birds.

Additionally, it has the capacity to host up to twenty guests at one time.

The Holiday Wildlife Sanctuary is also known by its full name, which is the Haliday Island Wildlife Sanctuary. Holiday Island is the common name for the sanctuary. The other two are the Sajnekhali Wild Life Sanctuary and the Lothian Wildlife Sanctuary.

It is one of the three wildlife sanctuaries that make up the Sundarbans Biosphere Reserve. It is also one of the wildlife sanctuaries in India that is the smallest in size.

Sundarban Tourism

Approximately six square kilometers can be found there. This island can be found in the region where the rivers Malta and Bidyadhari converge. It is situated very close to the Bay of Bengal. On the island, mangrove plant and animal species typically thrive.

Casuarina, Karanja, and other kinds of sweet water trees, such as these, were among those planted by the government as part of an afforestation program. This fact should be brought to your attention. Let’s learn more about the tourist destinations in the Sundarbans.

Examples of important creatures are the rhesus monkey, wild boar, barking deer, and spotted deer. This island sanctuary is home to a huge variety of bird species as well as rare invertebrate species, many of which do not have complete records due to a lack of rigorous documentation.

Tigers of the Royal Bengal subspecies have been known to go all the way from the Bonnie Camp region and the Sundarbans Tiger Reserve to pay a visit to Holiday Island.

Olive Ridley Turtles make their home on this particular beach in Sunderban, which is known as one of their safe havens. Turtles must travel enormous distances to reach the shallow coastal waters where they can reproduce. It is estimated that the turtles go upriver up to a distance of one hundred kilometers from the sea outlet into the Sunderban. Because of the presence of the critically endangered Olive Ridley Tortoise, the Sundarbans have become a well-liked vacation spot for people of all different kinds of travel backgrounds.

The majority of its growth occurs on sandy beaches and in waters with a shallow depth. During the breeding season, Ridley turtles travel from faraway areas to congregate at this particular site. The natural beauty is there for everybody to admire who comes to visit. Let’s learn more about the tourist spots in the Sundarbans.

Sundarban Tourism

Known for its Olive Ridley Turtles, Kanak in the Sundarbans is a turtle sanctuary. To breed, these turtles migrate from coastal waters to deeper areas. The location also provides a clear view of the forest reserve, but visitors come to Kanak mostly for its shallow coastal waters and to see the second smallest species of turtle in the family.

Hours : 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

The Piyali River serves as the gateway to Sundarbans National Park, and it is currently being developed into a tourism site. Piyali, which is situated 72 kilometers to the south of Kolkata, has recently become a well-liked destination for vacations and picnics. The Little River Piyali winds its way through the beautiful paddy fields on its way to join the River Malta.

This provides a glimpse of the landscape that can be found further into the south. A beautiful tourism complex can be found at Piyali, which is connected to Sajnekhali, Sudhanyakhali, and Netidhopani by canals. This complex provides guests with a center for education and interpretation, as well as housing options and recreational activities. Let’s learn more about the tourist spots in the Sundarbans.

Sundarban Tourism

It serves as the entrance to the Sundarbans National Park. T he Piyali River flows through the fields and meets the Matla River in the forest region . This river flows into the River Malta to create a magnificent delta, and the alluring scenery draws both visitors and locals.

The Bhagabatpur Crocodile Project, which is West Bengal’s one and only crocodile project, has developed into a popular tourist destination in recent years. It is one of the wildlife sanctuaries that are included in the Sundarbans Biosphere Reserve, and it is located on the bank of the Saptamukhi estuary, which is adjacent to Lothian Island.

Not only is this location known for its hatchery of estuarine crocodiles and the Batagur Baska species of turtle, but it is also known for its incredibly dense mangrove forest that is located at the junction of the Saptamukhi river system.

Both of these attractions are major draws for tourists. The stunning natural scenery of this location is also quite appealing. Crocodiles of varied ages are housed here as part of the study. This location can be reached from Sajnekhali as well, despite the fact that Namkhana provides the most convenient access to it. Without a doubt, doing so enables one to have experiences that only come along once in a lifetime and are difficult to forget.

This Crocodile Sanctuary is the only initiative of its kind in the state of West Bengal, and it has quickly become one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Sundarbans forest region.

The Batagur Baska tortoise and the estuarine crocodile both call this place their home. This is why it is so well-known. Because it provides such a breathtaking panorama of the dense mangrove forest, the location draws in hundreds of tourists every year.

Sundarban Tourism

Pets are not permitted due to the entry fee.

A protected area for animals can be found at Hiran Point, which is located in the Khulna range of the Sundarbans. It is also known by the name Nilkomol in some circles. The area of the Sundarbans that faces southeast and is referred to as Hiran Point can be found on the west bank of the Kunga River.

Tigers, along with a variety of other wild animals and birds, may be seen most clearly from Hiran Point, which is the best place for wildlife viewing overall. A watchtower, a road, the world historic landmark that is the Milestone Navy Camp, a pond, and a resort are some of the additional attractions.

The only medium that can get straight to the point is the launch event itself. During the launch, the Kunga River will be travelled across. Nevertheless, this does not directly address the Hiran argument in any way. as a result of the fact that launches are unable to navigate the canal that leads to the Nilkamal jetty because it is too narrow.

Following disembarkation from the launch, the tiny boat navigates across the canal and arrives at the interesting Hiran point. There will be a name stone waiting for you when you get to the jetty in honour of Nilkamal. After some time has passed, you might be able to recognise her as the arresting emblem of the world heritage site. The Sundarbans were given the status of a site of world heritage by UNESCO in the year 1997.

Despite the fact that this achievement’s milestone is not particularly significant, it nonetheless represents the pride of Bangladeshis. On the surface of the rectangle there is a circular item made of concrete.

After making some headway, we finally came upon her: the unforgettable emblem of the world heritage site. The Sundarbans was included on the list of UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites in the year 1997.

Even if the accomplishment of receiving this honour is not particularly noteworthy, Bangladeshis feel pleased to have received it. A circular piece of concrete sits on the foundation that is rectangular in shape. The notification is printed on the circular piece.

Sundarban Tourism

Hiron Point is another interesting Sundarban tourist attraction that you should see during your visit to the Sundarban forest. It’s an amazing location with a spectacular view of the forest’s wildlife, including dotted dears, various birds, and the Royal Bengal Tiger.

Permission to enter the park is required in order for tourists from other countries. They can receive one from the Sajnekhali office of the West Bengal Tourism Department or the Forest Department. The permit requires a valid passport.

The entrance fee for Indians is sixty rupees, while the fee for non-Indians is two hundred.

Because the park is so large and entrance to many of its regions is restricted, it is recommended that visitors frequently hire a guide. Guides are quite knowledgeable about both the best sites to visit and the areas that are off-limits to tourists.

Prices for boat tours range anywhere from 1,500 to 2,000 rupees (Rs.) per boat.

Because there are so few ATMs in the national park and the surrounding area, you should bring cash with you.

In the Sundarbans National Park, which is a plastic-free zone, carrying plastic or polythene bags is a major violation of the rules.

Bring along a few healthy snacks for the trip. If you start to feel hungry while you’re walking through the park, there are no stands for you to stop at. Do not litter, and throw waste away in the containers that have been provided.

Guests are only permitted to stay in the Sundarbans National Park and Tiger Reserve between the hours of sunrise and sunset, with check-out time set at no later than 6:00 p.m.

The Best Places for Tourists to Visit in Sundarban

Being a tourist spot, Sundarban is a hub for tourist sites and places. Now, of course, your time on the trip would be limited. So, you need to know the best spots to visit to use your time in the best ways possible.

Well, here is your online Sundarban tour guide to help you know all the places that you absolutely cannot miss out on when you’re in Sundarban.

Sajnekhali Bird Sanctuary

Sajnekhali Bird Sanctuary

Situated right near to the Sundarban Tiger Reserve, (a place that doesn’t need a mention on the list, if you’re in Sundarban, you’ve got to visit the tiger reserve, that’s a major attraction! Period.) the Sajnekhali Bird Sanctuary is equally a place for wildlife and nature lovers.

Equally as good as the Sundarban Tiger Reserve, the Sajnekhali Bird Sanctuary is perfect for bird watching and sightseeing while you take in the pure air of the natural surroundings in midst of the rich flora.

The bird sanctuary is full of blithe and lively birds and you could spot species like Peechkali, Gomti, Egrets, Herons, and the like. It’s mesmerising to see the flocks around you, chirping and singing their own songs and rhythms and enjoying their natural vibes in the beautiful forest.

Sudhanyakhali Watch Tower

Sudhanyakhali Watch Tower

Situated in close proximity to the Sajnekhali Watch Tower, which is again a great tourist spot to visit in Sundarban, the Sudhanyakhali Watch Tower is a picturesque location in Sundarban. The morning time is the best time to climb this watch tower and take in the panoramic view of the entire Sundarban forest and tiger reserve.

You’d love the gorgeous sight of the rich fauna that can be spotted from the tower. Most of the tigers in the Sundarban forest are visible from this watch tower. In addition to tigers, you can also spot other species of reptiles, ants, deers, lizards, boars, and crocodiles from the tower.

The tower is also rich with flora due to the small botanical project of the mangroves on the watch tower. Additionally, there is a pond visible from the tower where you can see the animals coming down to relax and drink water.

The sight is soothing and relaxing and you can have your own sweet time enjoying the view from the tower. However, you must know that the time you’d have here would be quite limited as the tower can only hold 25 people at a time and you’ve got to give other people the chance to enjoy the sight and view too.

Netidhopani Watch Tower

Netidhopani Watch Tower

This is another watch tower on the list of the best tourist places in Sundarban and not just for the picturesque view but its legendary tale. The legend has it that Netidhopani was a woman who Behula spotted on the very shore of the place that’s named after the woman today. The woman was blessed with the art of bringing life back through verses. As Behula was passing through the river to bid a final goodbye to her dead husband, she saw Netidhopani performing her art on a little boy who was annoying her as she tried doing her laundry. Beluha knew that she was the woman who could help bring her husband back and she did.

The place is also known for the famous ruins of a 400 year old Shiva temple. It’s also the place where Behula found nirvana.

One can also find sweet water pond around the watch tower and a road that guards the entire area.

With this legend and the traditional Shiva temple, this place has a cultural significance and gives region to why Sundarban is a heritage site. One can see history etched within the place and that gives it its importance.

So, you absolutely cannot miss out on visiting the Netidhopani Ghat and Watch Tower on your trip to Sundarban.

In addition to these three places, there’s the Sundarban National Park and Tiger Reserve which is the major attraction of the place and all the reasons to visit Sundarban in the first place. The Mangrove Eco Park, a small botanical project on the Sudhanyakali Watch Tower is also a great spot to see in Sundarban. Some more places of attraction are the Tin Kona Island, Sagar Lighthouse, Sajnekhali Watch Tower, Hiron Point, and Bharat Sevashram Sangha Temple.

News from the Columbia Climate School

Back to the Sundarbans

Mike Steckler

The next day, February 26, we headed west from Khulna to Baintola in Assasuni District to service my GNSS measuring land subsidence, make elevation and sedimentation measurements at the RSET-MH (rod surface elevation table-marker horizon) and take core samples using an auger. Together, these will contribute toward understanding the balance of sea level rise, land subsidence and sedimentation, critical for the low-lying delta in Bangladesh. This is the fourth of nine sites in coastal Bangladesh that we are visiting during this part of my trip.

sundarban tourist spot

It was again a long drive so we started at 6 am stopping for breakfast and tea.  In this area, we passed many shrimp farms where the soil is too salty for rice.  Many fields were fallow and used for grazing cattle in the dry season. Rice can only be grown during the monsoon season. However, we would occasionally see rice paddies that used a special salt-tolerant variety. After hours of driving, we stopped about 5 km north of the site.  From here on the road is so bad that we couldn’t take the van.  We switched to two electric bicycle vans.  And the road was as bad as advertised.  The monsoon had taken its toll and the bricks of the road were misplaced, washed away or upturned.  It took most of an hour for that last stretch.  We did finally reach the school/cyclone shelter with the GNSS on its roof. Joined by Sakib from BRAC, the world’s largest NGO.  BRAC is part of a project I am involved with designing interventions for adapting to climate change is SW Bangladesh.

sundarban tourist spot

We lugged the batteries and equipment up the ladder to the roof.  As it turned out, the batteries were still good. However, the modem was not connecting.  I downloaded the data, and with help over the phone from EarthScope, I logged into the modem and upgraded its settings, however, we still could not connect.  We hoped it was just the poor cellular signal, but this one did not connect later.  I hope I can return in the future with an EarthScope engineer.  Meanwhile the RSET team can download the data every 6 months, if needed.

sundarban tourist spot

From here, we took the van over an even worse road to join the RSET and auger teams, measuring shallow subsidence and sedimentation at their second site. This one is outside the embankment, but at the moment disconnected from the Kobadak River because it is being dredged.  In 2019, we sailed up this river to establish this site.  Now south of us it is completely cut off by shrimp farms.  To the north, the dredging has been completed and new embankments are being built along the now smaller channel.  Luckily, when we were done, the bicycle van driver knew an alternative route across the river that was good, and we sped along it back to our van.

sundarban tourist spot

Sakib took us to the BRAC office and another 5 pm lunch, then tea and snacks with members of the BRAC team that I had met in Dhaka.  By the time we finished and drove back to Khulna it was well after 10 pm.

sundarban tourist spot

Luckily, the following day was very easy.  Zohur and I had a GNSS site at Khulna University, 15 minutes away. It was in good shape and needed no work.  We toured the university and went to lunch.  Then Masud and I went to a meeting with the head of the regional Forestry Department, who is very interested in our work and its implications for sustainability of the Sundarbans Mangrove Forest.

sundarban tourist spot

Now it was time for us to go to the Sundarbans, the world’s largest mangrove forest. In the evening, we went to the  ghat (dock), where we were met by the crew of the M/V Bawali.  They loaded all our luggage and equipment onto the wooden country boat and sailed across the river to the Bawali.  There are a number of familiar faces for Masud and myself, but for the other members of our team, it is their first time on the Bawali and to the Sundarbans. Masud’s wife, Afroza Mim, also joined us as she have never been to the Sundarbans.

sundarban tourist spot

As we ate dinner, the crew started sailing down the Pusur River before stopping for the night.  By the time we woke up, the Bawali had resumed its journey towards Katka and we watched as the world’s largest mangrove forest passed by.  We arrived in the early afternoon and went to the RSETs, accompanied by an armed guard against tigers.  I do not have a GNSS here, so I tagged along, mainly helping the auger team.  In the soft muds of the forest, we reached 4.4 meters, or almost 14 ½ feet.

sundarban tourist spot

After finishing our work for the day, we had time for some sightseeing.  We took the country boat to the observation tower on the east side of the river.  Since it was late in the day, we saw lots of the spotted axis deer. In fact, there was a herd of ~200 south of the tower.  And plenty of monkeys as well.  We watched them and took pictures.  When we were satisfied, we went across the river to the Katka forest walk.  Again lots of monkeys, and several small groups of deer.  As the sun set, we crossed to the beach for the walk back.  We passed the ruins of a 300 year old salt kiln.  These have been used to measure subsidence as they are now no longer at or above the Spring High Tide level.  We also passed the ruins of the forest service buildings destroyed by Cyclone Sidr in 2007.  Waiting for us by the wooden walkway to our boat were two wild boar, calmly grazing at the beach.  It was an amazing first day in the Sundarbans.

sundarban tourist spot

During the night the Bawali sailed west to Tincona (Triangle) Island. We missed getting to see the Sundarbans pass by, but this put us well ahead of schedule.  In the morning the calm weather let us cross the 10-km wide Pusur River to Hiron Point.  Like many tidal channels, the Pusur widens towards its mouth on the Bay of Bengal.  Hiron Point is along a smaller tidal channel, but recently it has been accreting new land.  We have to follow the marked channel to approach it.  As we do, I realized that we forgot the GNSS toolkit on the Bawali.  After dropping off the RSET/auger teams, we had to head back to the Bawali. To save time, the speedboat came out to meet us, so the delay wasn’t too long.

sundarban tourist spot

Luckily, we only need to change the batteries at HRNP.  It has remained online, so all its data is collected daily via the internet.  The monitoring also showed that the battery is shot.  That went quickly, so we were able to join the others across the channel.  Zohur joins the RSET team and I joined the auger team, which now includes Mim.  After we finished, we had a snack of bananas and guava, then a long walk on the elevated walkway through the forest.  The broken and crumbling wooden walkway I visited before has now been replaced by concrete.  Near the end, there was an observation tower, but as it was midday, no animals were to be seen.  Nasser and the country boat sailed around to pick us up at the far end of the walkway.  We then had a cruise through s long winding tidal channel before meeting up with the Bawali.

sundarban tourist spot

Our stations in the Sundarbans are done.  We stopped for the night in the Sundarbans, but tomorrow we will sail out of it. Our next stations are at villages that border the Sundarbans, and some of the RSETs are in the Sundarbans. The Sundarbans are a magical place and will we I miss it.  We will also miss the complete lack of mosquitos thanks to saline to brackish waters of the mangrove forest.
