Multiple Grammy Award winning country artist Ronnie Milsap (born January 16th, 1943), has had an incredible 40 number one country hits in his long career, becoming one of the most successful country artists of his generation.

Born in the rural Appalachian town of Robbinsville, North Carolina, US, Milsap suffered from a congenital disorder that meant he has been blind since birth. However, this did little to hold Milsap back, who had a successful career in academia before deciding to leave his studies in order to pursue a career in music. He released his first single in 1964, “Total Disaster,” and went on to release his eponymous debut album on Warner Bros. in 1971.

Milsap has since gone on to forge a remarkable career, gathering endless hits, including the gut-wrenching ballad “Smoky Mountain Rain” (1981), “Any Day Now” (1982) and “There’s No Getting’ Over Me” (1981). Between the 1970s and 1980s, he was rarely out of the top ten of the US country charts, gaining his last number one hit in 1989, with “A Woman in Love.”

In the 90s, Milsap’s popularity began to wane, yet he continued to record and release albums frequently, still finding large audiences attending his live performances. Milsap has also diversified his style in later years, incorporating gospel, R&B and blues into his recordings, such as in his all-gospel affair, “Then Sings My Soul” in 2009.

Milsap has received an incredible array of awards throughout his career, including six Grammy Awards, eight Country Music Association Awards and was also inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2014. He has sold 35 million albums worldwide and is amongst the best selling country artists of all time.

Live reviews

I will be honest in my review for the show for Ronnie Milsap, and that is he didn't perform to the best of his abilities in last night show at all. I know he could have done better, if he wanted to, but for some reason didn't . I don't even remember what he opened the show with, because my mom and I were having an argument over the fact that I wanted to sing and dance in my seat, and my mom wouldn't let me do that much at least, because she said I was nothing but an embarrassment to her. I told her that she should go to a Mankato Symphony concert, which will be coming to Mankato to the Verizon Center tomorrow. She made me move down to the end of the aisle until some more people came, and then I was forced to sit with her. I then told her that she had to accept my having fun at the concert, she was quiet after that, thank goodness. I think the next one I go to . I will go to by myself, because I will then enjoy it better. As for the show itself, I would have to say , like I said Ronnie could have done better, because he did nothing to excite the crowd at all. He just sat at his piano like a bump on a log. He sang like he was sick. He had no energy at all, but what do you expect from a guy that is 75 years old, and is gaining weight, and been on the road for way too long. I think it is time that he gets off of the road, and spends time with his wife, Joyce.

American country singer, Ronnie Lee Milsap caught the attention of so many people. Part of the reason was because he was blind, but more importantly, it was because he crossed different genres, which was a little different when he first started making music. He was able to blend aspects of R&B with country and open up the appeal to “country music” to a wider range of people.

Front and center of the stage sitting at a beautiful piano, is Ronnie while behind and off to the sides his band takes the stage all at once. A guitarist, keyboardist, drummer, and bassist; however, it is just him and the piano that start off the show. As the song progresses, the band start to layer in their sounds, so that by the time Ronnie starts to sing, you have a full bodied sound, layered with so many different things. The complexity of his songs, and the visual of this complexity lend a special kind of experience. You never for a second pay attention to his blindness because you see the passion and emotion that drives him. You can see that the expression that he allows himself by sharing his music is all that he needs, and inspires you to no end.

Ronnie Milsap was undoubtedly one of the most popular country performers of the 70s and 80s having made the difficult crossover between country and pop with startling ease and staggering success. His influence and legacy is felt in the country scene in the modern day so therefore a demand remains to see the great man perform live.

There is a wide range of patrons gathered tonight as Milsap's music has the power to cross generations and is often passed down from parents. They cheer intently as Ronnie's band appears followed by the man himself. It must be a strange experience to have played so many times and hear the rapturous cheers from the crowd but to never see the scale of the venues Ronnie manages to fill. The blind performer endearingly informs the crowd he understands the magnitude of the show and thanks every audience member for attending tonight. The music is top quality, the performer is top class and the night gets top marks.

I was so honored and pleased to be at the Parker Playhouse on March 5th, 2015 to see Ronnie Milsap. He has been my all time favorite singer for over 30 years. I had hoped that one day I could actually see him live at a concert. I was so blessed when my daughter gave me tickets to see Ronnie Milsap. What an awesome concert!!!!!!!! Ronnie sang a lot of songs and I must say that honestly, his voice was just as beautiful as it was 30 years ago. If you have never seen him in person, you must go. That is one great singer who I wish would never retire. RONNIE MILSAP IS THE BEST!

Bought these tickets for my dad for Christmas and Unfortunately, it was horrible and we left after 30 mins. At 74 Ronnie can not sing anymore. He almost sounds like he suffered a stoke at some point :-((

Little Big Town

Kane brown drums up new country airplay no. 1 with phil collins-inspired 'i can feel it', trending on billboard.

“I think we’re going to blow up the Bridgestone. We’re going to blow it up. I’m very thankful for everyone,” Milsap says of the evening.

In 1977, Milsap won entertainer of the year, and over his career has taken home album of the year four times and male vocalist of the year three times from the CMA Awards. He earned Grammy Awards for his Kenny Rogers duet “Make No Mistake, She’s Mine,” and his own “Lost in the Fifties Tonight,” “(There’s) No Gettin’ Over Me,” “Please Don’t Tell Me How the Story Ends,” and “(I’m A) Stand by My Woman Man.”

Several of the artists on the Bridgestone lineup collaborated with Milsap on his 2019 album The Duets , including Little Big Town, with whom he recorded “Lost in the Fifties,” and Chapman, who sang “You’re Nobody” with the singer.

“They’re really good, wonderful people,” Milsap says of LBT. “They are fun to be around. We did that song on [Jimmy Fallon]’s show and they were just wonderful.”

Milsap has an even closer tie with another performer on the bill: since 1976, Milsap has lived in a Nashville residence he bought from Stevens.

“I loved working with Ray,” Milsap says. “Ray wanted to move out of this house because Webb Pierce lived across the street and he was selling tapes and CDs out of his house there and Ray said he wanted out of that. Well, Webb also played music kind of loud.” He adds, “Ray Stevens is one smart cookie, I’m telling you.”

Having a plethora of artists singing his music and feting his work is light years away from Milsap’s difficult childhood. The North Carolina native was born blind and was subsequently abandoned by his mother, who felt her son’s blindness was a kind of divine punishment. He lived with his grandmother from age one, until he was enrolled in the State School for the Blind in Raleigh at age six.

The school had a premier music program, with Milsap learning classical technique. He took up violin at age seven and piano a year later, all the while soaking up sounds of Jerry Lee Lewis, Ray Charles and Fats Domino from the radio. Milsap studied at Young-Harris Junior College in Atlanta, but ultimately turned down a full law school scholarship to chase his dreams of music. His first release came with his 1963 single “Total Disaster.” He first broke through as an R&B singer, earning a top 20 hit on the R&B Songs chart with Ashford & Simpson’s “Never Had It So Good.”

He relocated to Memphis in 1968, working with legendary producer Chips Moman. Milsap was also playing several clubs around Memphis, including The Thunderbird and TJ’s; Presley would bring in Milsap in to play a few of his New Year’s Eve bashes.

Milsap calls those Memphis years “magical,” saying, “Everything that happened in Memphis, with Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, Elvis … that energy was all over the place.”

Even so, Milsap’s heart was in country music. “I decided I needed to do what I wanted to do, not what everyone else was asking me to do,” Milsap recalls. After seeing him perform in a nightclub, Charley Pride encouraged Milsap to move to Nashville.

Milsap moved to Nashville in 1972 and quickly landed a gig playing five nights a week at a popular Nashville industry hotspot, Roger Miller’s King of the Road Motor Inn. Milsap, who was managed by Pride’s manager, Jack Johnson, recorded a batch of demo tapes, and they took them to then-RCA Nashville label head Jerry Bradley.

“Jerry said, ‘We know about Milsap. He’s down there in Memphis and he plays rock n’ roll and rhythm and blues. He’s not a country singer,’” Milsap recalls. “Jack played him a song I cut called ‘That Girl Who Waits on Tables,’ and Jerry heard that and said, ‘Well, that S.O.B. really is a country singer.’”

Milsap’s slate of hits in the 1970s and 1980s proved Bradley correct. Milsap’s first Hot Country Singles top 10 hit with RCA Nashville was 1973’s “I Hate You.” “That Girl Who Waits on Tables” reached No. 11 on the same chart a year later. In 1974, he earned his first No. 1 there with the Eddie Rabbitt-penned “Pure Love,” launching a string of chart successes that also included the Grammy-winning “Please Don’t Tell Me How the Story Ends,” as well as “Daydreams About Night Things.”

Milsap has earned 35 Billboard Hot Country Songs No. 1 hits, many of them recorded in his own studio, which he purchased from Roy Orbison in 1978 and renamed Groundstar Laboratories. Among the songs recorded at the studio with his then-producer Collins were 1979’s “Nobody Likes Sad Songs,” and the Mike Reid-penned 1983 hit “Stranger in My House,” which netted a Grammy for best country song.

“We cut everything there, as soon as Mike Reid would write a song, I’d get in there and record it,” Milsap recalls. Affectionately known as “Ronnie’s Place,” the studio is now under the ownership of Black River Entertainment.

Notably for an artist who grew up steeped in the soulful sounds of artists such as Charles, Lewis and Presley, Milsap was inducted into the Memphis Music Hall of Fame last year. Recently, he’s spent time recording in his home studio, cutting classics from the Great American Songbook for a project he hopes to release next year.

“It’s not a small studio; it fits like six or seven people in there, but it’s a wonderful studio,” Galbraith says. “We did an album like this back in 2004 [ Just For a Thrill ], but we’re doing other songs and more songs that Ronnie grew up on. We cut [Frank Sinatra’s] ‘Witchcraft,’ [Tony Bennett’s] ‘I Left My Heart in San Francisco.’”

Ronnie Milsap Says Goodbye

  • By Joseph Hudak

Joseph Hudak

Ronnie Milsap will play his final Nashville concert Tuesday night, a guest-heavy salute to the piano player featuring Kelly Clarkson , Little Big Town, Sara Evans, Parker McCollum, Breland, Ricky Skaggs , and more. Milsap is 80 now and regarded as a pillar of country music — the Country Music Hall of Fame inducted him in 2014 — but at heart, he remains an unapologetic pop vocalist.

Listen to “Pure Love,” his 1974 Number One hit, written by Eddie Rabbitt. Only an expert in pop could successfully sell those lyrics about “milk and honey and Cap’n Crunch/And you in the morning.” Or try 1982’s “Any Day Now,” his definitive rendering of the Burt Bacharach love song. Even Milsap’s entry in country music’s truck-driving canon, 1984’s “Prisoner of the Highway,” is polished as brightly as chrome.

Editor’s picks

The 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history, every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term.

Milsap was so adept at pop and comfortable with the idea of courting an outside-of-Nashville audience that his 1984 video for “She Loves My Car,” starring a then-unknown Mariska Hargitay and featuring a cameo by Fantasy Island ‘s Hervé Villechaize, got a premiere on MTV. “The first time that video was played was on MTV,” says Milsap, who almost bailed on the shoot until he caught hell from an executive. “He said, ‘I’m spending a couple hundred thousand dollars on this video. And I’ll never be able to get these people back together again. Are you going to do the video for me or not?’” (The end result was a neon assault on the senses that makes you think that maybe Milsap should have stuck to his guns.)

But the other joy of Milsap is that he’s never been afraid to throw himself headlong into the stunt. He titled his 1976 album 20/20 Vision — Milsap, of course, was born blind. “I’ve got 20/20 vision,” Milsap laughs, quoting the lyrics, “but only looking back.”

Milsap Returns! April 30th

Ronnie Milsap A Better Word For Love New Album

Nashville: Country Music Hall of Fame legend Ronnie Milsap follows up his all-star Duets, featuring Kacey Musgraves, Willie Nelson, Dolly Parton, Billy Gibbons, Luke Bryan and George Strait, with a 10-song slice of the soul country he’s inhabited for the last half century. A Better Word for Love explores the R&B-steeped sound that has long been the 6-time GRAMMY award-winner and 3-time Country Music Association Male Vocalist of the Year winner’s trademark.

Teaming with longtime co-producer Rob Galbraith, the pair sought to celebrate the genre-blurring kind of country that led him to an unprecedented four CMA Album of the Year Awards, as well as the coveted CMA Entertainer of the Year. Drawing on some much-loved songs that hadn’t fit prior projects, the pair built an homage to the 70s/80s/90s country Milsap defined.

Mike Reid (“Stranger In My House,” “I Can’t Make You Love Me”), Gary Nicholson (“One More Last Chance,” “The Trouble With The Truth”), Al Anderson (“All You Ever Do Is Bring Me Down,” “The Cowboy In Me”), Jim Weatherly (“Midnight Train To Georgia,” “Best Thing To Ever Happen To Me”), Brent Maher (“Why Not Me,” “Lesson In Leavin’”), Allen Shamblin (“The House That Built Me,” “Life’s A Dance”), and David Ball (“Drinkin’ Problem”) provide the top shelf songs people have come to expect from the legendary musician.

“I have been blessed to work with some of the very best songwriters in the world,” Milsap reflects. “Over the years, they’ve kept bringing me unbelievable songs, and in some cases, they’ve let me hang onto them because I loved them so much. When Rob and I started this project a few years ago, we decided some of those songs were so special… We wanted to build this album around them, so they wouldn’t be treasures only Joycee and I could hear.

Along the way, Milsap received a special package from Carl Perkins’ widow. “Big Bertha” was the last song the Rock & Roll Hall of Famer had written. She’d sent it to Milsap thinking he’d do it right. Not only did the Academy of Country Music Pioneer Award winner bring his signature slow burning blues to the song, he enlisted Vince Gill for the quick-hitting, fiddle-punctuated country portion of the paean to more than a woman, but a driver.

“Singing a song about a golf club without Vince Gill just didn’t feel right,” Milsap laughs. “And he was able to bring that thing he does like nobody else to Carl’s song. Somewhere I think he’s smiling.”

Whether the undulating “Wild Honey,” the cascading tavern country “Almost Mine,” the soft soul “Fool” or the vintage Milsap title track, every style of the Georgia and North Carolina Music Hall of Famer’s storied career is on display. To further honor these songs, Milsap enlisted some of Nashville’s finest to play with: guitarists Brent Mason, Steve Gibson, Mark Casstevens, and Chris Leuzinger, bass player Michael Rhodes, drummer Lonnie Wilson, double steel players Mike Johnson and Paul Franklin, and Milsap’s longtime musical director Jamie Brantley.

As a further homage to his longtime musical compatriots, Milsap includes “Civil War,” recorded live at Atlanta’s Chastain Park in 1993. Capturing his longtime touring band in their prime, the Cindy Richardson/Carol Chase song weaves Southern gospel into a song of marital dissolution – and demonstrates the vocal dynamics, keyboard stylings and drama onstage.
