Pricing and Fare Zones

The price of your trip depends on when, where, and how you are travelling.

On this page

Save time and skip the lines! Tap your bank card or mobile wallet at the faregate to pay for your ride.

There are three fare zones across Metro Vancouver. The number of SeaBus and/or SkyTrain boundaries you cross during your trip determine your fare.

All bus and HandyDART trips regardless of zones crossed, time of day, or day of the week are a 1-Zone fare.

SkyTrain and SeaBus require a 1-, 2-, or 3-Zone fare, depending on the time of day and number of zone boundaries you cross during your trip.

A single fare is valid for 90 minutes on bus, SkyTrain, SeaBus, and HandyDART.

All journeys across the system starting after 6:30 p.m. weekdays and all travel on weekends (Saturday, Sunday, and holidays) are a 1-Zone fare.

YVR Airport AddFare

Please note: Journeys after 6:30 p.m. that start at YVR Airport, Sea Island Centre, and Templeton Canada Line stations will still incur a $5 YVR AddFare charge. For more information about this charge and who is exempt, please see our Transferring and AddFare  page.

Compass Card

Find out how to pay for transit on our Compass Card page.

Estimate your Fare

Buses are a 1-Zone fare, all day, every day. Cash fares on buses are not transferable to SkyTrain, West Coast Express, or SeaBus.

Plus an additional $5 YVR Airport AddFare if starting from YVR Airport, Sea Island Centre, or Templeton Stations.

Paying Your Fare

Paying on the bus and handydart.

Using a Compass Card, Compass Ticket, contactless payment cards, or mobile wallet.

When you board, tap your card, ticket, or mobile wallet on the card reader located near the bus doors. You don't need to tap out when exiting.

Place the coins or bills into the fare box (no change can be given). You'll be handed a bus transfer from the Operator that is your proof of payment and can be used to transfer between buses (but not on SkyTrain, SeaBus, or West Coast Express).

For more information about paying on HandyDART, visit the HandyDART page.

Paying on SkyTrain, SeaBus, and West Coast Express

When you travel on SkyTrain, SeaBus, or West Coast Express, tap your card, ticket, or mobile wallet to the card reader at the fare gates (or validator for West Coast Express) as you enter and exit a station to validate your fare. Tapping reserves the fare for a 3-Zone trip, or a full-distance trip in the case of West Coast Express.

When you tap out, the system calculates the fare zones you've travelled and charges you the correct fare. This applies to all products, including Monthly Passes.

Paper bus transfers are only valid for transfer between buses.

Proof of Payment

Transit vehicles and all areas within fare gates are Fare Paid Zones.

All customers must pay the fare required by the TransLink Transit Tariff and carry proof of payment whenever they’re aboard a transit vehicle, within fare gates, or within any station area that is designated as a Fare Paid Zone.

Valid proof of payment:

Compass Cards and Compass Tickets with a valid fare that has been successfully tapped in are accepted as proof of payment on all modes.

Validated FareSavers (no longer sold) and bus transfers are accepted as proof of payment on buses.

Transit Police and Transit Security regularly conduct fare checks. Ensure you’ve tapped your Compass Card or Compass Ticket to validate your fare, and have them, along with any required valid identification, available for inspection, if asked. On buses, keep your bus transfer for inspection.

Anyone who fails to produce proof of payment with valid identification on request will be asked to leave the vehicle and risks facing a fare infraction ticket with a fine of $173.

Visit our Fare Infraction  page for more information on paying or disputing a fare evasion ticket.

Paying as a Group

For large group trips (e.g., school field trips), you can bulk purchase Compass Tickets ahead of time. Visit our Group Travel  page for all the details.

Contactless Payment

Taking transit and don’t have a Compass Card? No need to print a ticket. Save time, skip lines, and go straight to the gate!

Our card readers accept contactless Interac Debit, American Express, Mastercard, and Visa credit cards along with Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Samsung Pay. Go paper-free and help the environment. All you need to do is tap your card or device on the fare gate or bus card reader to pay.

Like a Compass Card, you can only use one payment device per person. You still have 90 minutes to make your transfer across bus, SeaBus and SkyTrain services (120 minutes on West Coast Express services). Be sure to tap your card, not your wallet, and to use the same card when transferring between buses, SkyTrain, SeaBus, and West Coast Express to avoid getting multiple charges. Final charges are determined by when you tap out at the end of your trip. Single adult cash fare applies. For discounted fare, use a Compass Card.

Watch Out for Card Clash

If you tap your wallet or phone case, multiple credit cards may be charged. Remove your credit or debit card from your wallet or phone case before you tap.

Keep in mind that Tap to Pay is unrelated to your Compass Card. Currently, there is no Compass App.

Avoiding Charge for Uncompleted Trips

If you tap in and decide not to complete a trip, you can easily reverse your charges. If you tapped on a bus, please ask the driver to reverse the tap for you. If travelling on rail, you can undo your initial tap in by tapping out of the same station within 21 minutes on SkyTrain and SeaBus, and 60 minutes for West Coast Express.

Transit Police Security Checks

Transit Police and Transit Security use Hand-Held Units (HHUs) to check fares. If you've paid using Tap to Pay, police or security personnel may use an HHU to detect if your credit card, debit card, or mobile device is an accepted form of payment and has been tapped into the system.

Kids 12 and Under Ride Free

Kids 12 and under ride free

As of Sept. 1, 2021, children 12 and under can ride TransLink services free of charge as part of a new provincial program. This change makes it easier and more affordable for families in and around Metro Vancouver.

Learn more about Transit Tips for Kids .

Note to Parents and Guardians

While travel for children 12 and under is free, parents and guardians are responsible for educating and making decisions about the safety and care of their children whenever travelling on transit. This includes when children are travelling unaccompanied and determining if their children can or should take transit unaccompanied.

Children 12 and under can ride buses free of charge without requiring a transit pass, identification or an accompanying fare paying customer.

SkyTrain, SeaBus, and West Coast Express

Children 12 and under can ride on SkyTrain, SeaBus, and West Coast Express free of charge only if accompanied by a fare paying customer. A fare paying customer can accompany up to a maximum of four children through the fare gates.

Children 12 and under can continue to access the gated system by themselves with the purchase of a fare to tap through fare gates.

Children 12 and under who are registered HandyDART customers or children who are accompanying a registered HandyDART customer can travel for free on HandyDART without requiring a fare product or identification. Learn more on the HandyDART page .

Frequently Asked Questions

Do children need to be accompanied on the bus.

Children 12 and under do not need to be accompanied by a fare paying customer to travel for free on buses because there are no fare gates.

Parents and guardians are responsible for educating and making decisions about the safety and care of their children and determining if their children may take transit unaccompanied. We strongly recommend that parents and guardians are informed about transit use and the safety and care of their children whenever travelling on transit, including when their children travel unaccompanied, and determining whether their children can or should take transit unaccompanied.

Do children need to be accompanied on the gated system and how will children access the gated system for free?

Children must be accompanied by a fare paying customer when travelling on and through the gated system, including SkyTrain, SeaBus, and West Coast Express. One fare paying customer can accompany up to four children who are riding for free. The fare paying customer must escort the children through the fare gates (see below).

How should fare paying customers escort children through a fare gate?

We recommend fare paying customers tap their fare product once and let the children they are escorting through the open fare gate before passing through the fare gate themselves. If there are any issues getting through fare gates, customers are encouraged to seek a SkyTrain attendant or to pick up the closest Courtesy Phone to ask for help.

Can children access the gated system without being accompanied by a fare paying customer?

Unaccompanied children are not able to access the gated system without fare payment. Parents and guardians must ensure that their children are aware of TransLink’s fare policy and how to safely use the transit system, including the requirement for individuals under 13 to pay the appropriate fare when using SkyTrain, SeaBus, or West Coast Express unaccompanied by a fare paying customer.

Parents and guardians are responsible for educating and making decisions about the safety and care of their children whenever travelling on transit, including if their children can or should take transit unaccompanied.

Why do children need to be accompanied on SkyTrain, SeaBus, and West Coast Express, but not on bus?

Children need to be accompanied by a fare paying passenger on SkyTrain, SeaBus, and West Coast Express services because these services are only accessible by tapping fare payment to gain access through the fare gates. With buses, children can board without needing to pass through a fare gate. We will be working with the Province on simplifying this experience for children on TransLink’s gated system in the future.

How can school groups, community groups, and larger families move through fare gates?

School groups, community groups, and larger families should seek a SkyTrain attendant or pick up the closest Courtesy Phone to ask for help. A SkyTrain attendant can assist larger groups with children 12 and under access the gated system using existing procedures. If you know your plans ahead of arriving, call 604.520.5518 and let us know when and where a SkyTrain attendant can meet your group.

If you have a Compass Card, Compass Ticket, contactless credit card or Interac Debit and used Tap to Pay, you can transfer across bus, SeaBus, SkyTrain, and HandyDART on a single fare for up to 90 minutes, or up to 120 minutes when including travel on the West Coast Express. Your travel time begins when you first tap your card or ticket to enter a fare paid zone.

Fares paid with cash on buses cannot be transferred to other modes.

The most convenient card if you want to take several types of transport within an hour and a half period. It costs  ₽ 65 ( US$ 0.70) per person and allows one metro ride and an unlimited number of trips on other types of public transport in Moscow during the time of its duration.

Terms and conditions.

iLink cards can be used on all scheduled Metro, NI Railways and Ulsterbus services within each of 5 specified zones in Northern Ireland (Day Tours, Cross Border and Special Services are excluded).

iLink Cards are valid for travel within the zone the card has been issued for. The appropriate full fare must be paid for the entire journey if the journey will include an additional zone which is not covered by the iLink card.

Child cards are valid for use by children between the ages of 5 years and 16 years. 16 year olds are permitted to travel on a child card up to 30th June during the school year they turn 16 years of age.

Topping Up & Expiry Dates

iLink cards can be loaded with one day, one week or one month’s worth of travel for Zones 1, 2, 3, 4 or the North West Zone or in varying periods of validity e.g. one week top-up followed by a one month top-up.

Where an iLink card has some existing validity, topping up extends the current validity date. For example, a card with 3 days travel is topped up with 7 days travel becomes immediately valid for 10 days from the date of top-up and not 3 days followed by a further 7 days from the date of first use of the newly purchased travel. Any unused travel remaining in the intervening period between top-up and next use will not be eligible for refund.

iLink cards can be topped-up with one month’s travel at Translink bus and rail stations, Smartlink and PayPoint Agents, Belfast Welcome Centre, Donegall Place, Belfast, Belfast International Airport Welcome Centre, George Best Belfast City Airport Welcome Centre, Derry Visitor & Convention Bureau and Queen’s University Student’s Union. Top-ups of daily and weekly travel are available at Translink bus and rail stations, with the driver or conductor on board Ulsterbus and NI Railways services, Smartlink and PayPoint Agents, Belfast Welcome Centre, Donegall Place, Belfast, Belfast International Airport Welcome Centre, George Best Belfast City Airport Welcome Centre, Derry Visitor & Convention Bureau and Queen’s University Students’ Union

You cannot buy or top-up an iLink Card on board a Metro

If an iLink top-up is purchased in error the transaction can be cancelled only if this is done before a further transaction has been processed on the ticket machine.

Card Validation

iLink Cards must be validated on the bus or train for every leg of the journey made. If a valid working iLink card is not presented to the ticket machine the customer will be required to pay full fare.

iLink Cards are validated on a bus by placing the card on the ticket machine reader.

Where Translink Platform Validators are located at a train station an iLink Card must be validated on the machine before and after each leg of the journey.

If a Platform Validator machine is not available an iLink Card must be validated by a member of staff for you.

iLink Cards are subject to the conditions of carriage of Translink’s operating companies.

Cards remain the property of Translink. If lost cards are found they should be returned to: Translink SmartPass Office, Floor 1, 22 Great Victoria Street, Belfast, BT2 7LX

Cards must be retained by the passenger until the journey is complete and must be presented if requested by authorised Translink personnel.

Once the validity of a card has expired it cannot be used for travel until topped-up. Expired cards presented for travel will not be accepted and the appropriate full fare will be charged.

iLink Cards are only transferable between passengers who are not travelling on the same journey. They can be passed to someone else wishing to travel at a different time within the zone the card has been issued for. The iLink card must be retained by the passenger for their entire journey.

iLink Card holders may apply for a refund of unused travel remaining on a card if it is no longer required. Refund claims must be received before the expiry date of the card. The refund is calculated on the date the card is received for refund by reimbursing any unused travel (full days only) at the discounted iLink price.

A 20% charge will be applied in the case of damaged cards (capped at £5). No charge will be applied for faulty cards. The card holder will be required to purchase a new card.

If an iLink Card is lost or stolen the card holder should phone Translink on 028 9075 9129 during of office hours to cancel or ‘hotlist’ the card by reporting the iLink Card number printed on the reverse of the card and on any ticket receipts issued. Moscow’s new suburban rail lines dramatically improve commutes!

translink train travel card

The first two of the five lines of the MCD were launched November 21: the MCD1 line goes to Odintsovo (west) and Lobnya (north), while MCD2 to Podolsk (south) and Nakhabino (west). These towns are some 20-30 km from Moscow, and are inhabited by hundreds of thousands of people traveling to Moscow on business each day.

Vladimir Putin at the opening of the MCD.

Vladimir Putin at the opening of the MCD.

Both lines cross over with central Moscow stations, as well as those on the outskirts. You can change over to the Moscow Central Circle or the metro (there is a total of 27 stations where you can make the switch). These changes allow for getting to and from the city center much faster and more conveniently than commuter trains.

translink train travel card

Why does Moscow need the MCD?

The MCD will add to the function of the commuter trains, easing part of the daily burden experienced by those lines, as well as reduce car traffic in and out of town. The MCD runs every 5-10 minutes with only a four-hour break at night. The reason the new trains are referred to as Diameters is that they travel not just to Moscow’s main intercity stations, but also from one city on the outskirts of Moscow all the way to another one situated at the other end.

translink train travel card

The service runs similar to an ordinary Metro, from 5:30 a.m. to 1 a.m. Directions are available in English, so you won’t get lost.

One important change you must remember is the Aeroexpress trains to Sheremetyevo airport now run differently than before: now one ride from the Belorussky railway to Sheremetyevo will take 50 minutes - instead of the usual 35. Also, on the way from the airport, Belorussky railway will no longer be the final stop - Odintsovo will. But there will also be a few new stations that cross over with the regular metro - in the Moscow City district, on Begovaya, Fili and Kuntsevskaya. All of these interlink with the regular metro.

translink train travel card

New internet-capable trains

The MCD trains - in accordance with the Russian custom with giving names of birds to every new train route - will carry the name Ivolga (Russian word for “Eurasian golden oriole”). The carriages are outfitted with bike racks, luggage and stroller compartments, power sockets and USB chargers with every seat, as well as free Wi-Fi - as is the case with all of Moscow’s urban transport.

translink train travel card

39 trains are currently operational.

Free transfers!

Prior to the MCD appearing, passengers wanting to switch between city and suburban trains had to buy separate tickets. The MCD greatly simplifies the process: now you simply need to use your Troika card at the MCD ticket stalls. There are two tariffs - city (38 rubles, or $0.6) and regional (45 rubles, $0.8; meaning cities just on the outskirts of Moscow - not the entire region). If you need to go further afield into the Moscow region, beyond the MCD, then your Troika card will be charged an additional $0.35 (23 rubles) to transfer to the ‘elektrichka’ (electrical commuter trains).

translink train travel card

Switching between MCD and metro trains is free for a 90-minute window, irrespective of the tariff. However, if you don’t check out of the station at the exit stalls, your Troika card will be blocked, and require around $2.30 (150 rubles) to unlock.

translink train travel card

You can also pay via Apple Pay, Google Pay, Mastercard PayPass and Visa PayPass.

Will there be other ‘diameters’?

translink train travel card

Several more MCD are slated to launch before 2025 - the MCD3 (from Ramenskoye to Zelenograd), MCD4 (Zheleznodorozhny to Aprelevka) and MCD5 (from Domodedovo to Pushkino). Right now, the passenger load of the first two Diameters is estimated at 900,000 per day. All five Diameters will serve more than 330 million Moscow passengers every year.

Transit Link Card

What is a Transit Link Card (TLC)? A TLC is available for either MARC train or Commuter Bus customers. The TLC allows unlimited monthly use of MARC or Commuter Bus up to the zone indicated, depending on which pass is purchased; in addition to unlimited monthly travel on:

  • WMATA Metrorail and Metrobus
  • Montgomery County RideOn
  • DASH – Alexandria, VA
  • MTA CityLink, LocalLink, Express BusLink (up charge included), Metro Subway and Light Rail

How much does a TLC cost? The TLC cost is based on zone structure. Exact fares for MARC or Commuter Bus may be found on the Commuter Direct web site. Select your mode of travel either MARC or Commuter Bus for exact pricing. MTA.CommuterDirect.com

In addition to the monthly fare add $2.00 for smart card + $1.00 surcharge for sticker pass.

Where do I purchase a TLC? Online with Commuter Direct at MTA.CommuterDirect.com. Or at Commuter Direct walk in Commuter Store locations Arlington Commuter Store, Odenton Commuter Store and Springfield Connector Store.

Questions? Visit MTA.CommuterDirect.com

Or call: 410-697-2212 or 703-228-7433

Note Commuters who purchase a MARC TLC and travel originates at MARC BWI station are eligible for free parking at the station. Click here for more information about this service. Register each TLC smart card at wmata.com to protect the Metro portion of your TLC against loss. If the SmarTrip portion of the card becomes unusable (cracked, bent, not-working), and the SmarTrip Card is registered, then the SmarTrip portion of the pass is eligible for “Balance Protection”. Take the card in-person to any Metro sales office for card replacement.  Transfer of the pass, will not be available via the customer service website. WMATA will not replace the TLC sticker.

Changes to Transit Link Card effective January 2016

Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) is in the process of eliminating all paper-magnetic fare cards throughout its system.

As part of this plan, in January 2016 the Transit Link Card (TLC) for February will be issued on a smart card. From that point on, only the smart card version of the TLC will be sold.

MARC, and MTA Commuter Bus vehicles do not have the technology to read smart cards. They will continue to rely on conductors and bus operators to visually inspect a sticker pass applied to the face of the smart card to verify the proper agency, month, and zones of travel. For trips on MTA local service the pass will continue to be accepted as a flash pass to ride CityLink, LocalLink, Express BusLink (up charge included), Metro Subway and Light Rail.

Applying transit benefits to the cost of the TLC remains the same, as does the monthly validity period and riding privileges on WMATA Metrorail and Metrobus.

Purchase Online at  CommuterDirect.com

Order from CommuterDirect.com as you normally have. You will receive a new smart card with each order. The card will contain an electronically loaded monthly Metro pass and a MARC, or MTA Commuter Bus sticker pass.

COST – The cost of a MARC or Commuter Bus Monthly TLC and $2.00 for smart card + $1.00 surcharge for sticker pass.

Purchase at Commuter Stores

The TLC may be purchased at The Commuter Store, or reloaded, if you already have a SmarTrip or CharmCard. The TLC will be available at all Arlington Commuter Store locations, the  Odenton Commuter Store , and the Springfield Connector Store. The monthly sticker pass will be applied to your card. Customers using this option are strongly encouraged to have two cards, so they can use one card for the current month, and load the TLC and get the sticker pass for the following month on a spare card. Customers will not be able to show two sticker passes on one card at the same time.

COST The cost of a MARC or Commuter Bus Monthly TLC and If you purchase a new smart card, $2.00 for the smart card + $1.00 surcharge for sticker pass. If you load the TLC pass onto an existing SmarTrip or CharmCard, you will save the $2.00 cost for a new card. The $1 surcharge for the sticker pass will still apply for MARC and MTA Commuter Bus customers.

How to Use the New TLC Use the card, with current sticker, as a flash pass on MARC, Commuter Bus and MTA Local Service. When riding WMATA Metrorail or Metrobus, tap the card to the SmarTrip target on faregates and fareboxes.

**Register each TLC smart card at wmata.com to protect the Metro portion of your TLC against loss. Translink: Bus and rail strikes suspended after latest pay offer

A 72-hour strike by bus and train workers in Northern Ireland, planned for later this week, has been suspended.

The Unite, GMB and Siptu unions had notified Translink that they would take the action on 27, 28 and 29 February.

However, following talks on Sunday the unions said there had been an improved pay offer from Translink.

The three public transport unions said they will now ballot their membership on the new offer.

In a statement, they said: "Pay negotiations between the transport unions and Translink management were reconvened today [Sunday] following the rejection of an initial pay offer by management on Thursday [22 February].

"Following the receipt of an improved pay offer for all Translink employees workforce reps suspended the planned 72-hour strike action set for 00:01 on Tuesday (27 February)."

It is understood it could be later in the week before the outcome of the ballot of workers is known.

Peter Macklin, GMB regional organiser, described the offer as "satisfactory and enough for us to suspend the strike action".

However, he would not give any further details of the pay offer before it could be communicated to union reps and members.

"We are encouraged by [the offer], but ultimately the members will have their say," he said.

Mr Macklin said the offer would go to GMB members with no recommendation to vote either for, or against.

Public sector pay dispute

He said he hoped to get ballots out to members this week.

Infrastructure Minister John O'Dowd welcomed the suspension of the strikes, describing it as a "positive development".

Mr O'Dowd said he wanted to thank the unions and Translink management for their "determination to find a resolution to this dispute".

The minister said that resolving public sector pay quickly "has been a key priority" for the new executive.

The British government is expected to release a £3.3bn package now that power sharing has been restored at Stormont , about £580m of which is to settle public-sector pay claims.

On 18 January, 16 trade unions and tens of thousands of public sector workers took part in one of Northern Ireland's largest strikes, affecting many sectors including transport and health.

Public transport workers in Northern Ireland cancelled a strike that would have brought bus and rail services to a halt on 15 February.

That was to give political leaders space to make an improved pay offer, unions said.
