Customer Courtesy: What It Is and 8 Best Practices to Do It Right

Jay Fuchs

Published: January 25, 2022

Courtesy can mean a lot. It goes a long way in day-to-day life — and even longer in the context of customer service .

Customer service rep showing customer courtesy during a call

Customer courtesy can be the difference between winning new business for free and losing current business altogether. It's something that needs to be instilled in your support reps' training and daily operations.

Here, I'll provide a picture of why courtesy is so important in customer service and offer some strategies reps can and should use to improve their customer courtesy.

Customer Courtesy

Customer courtesy is the sum of various behaviors a company's support reps engage in to show customers they're valued and being heard. The hope is that demonstrating customer courtesy will help a business build customer loyalty and facilitate free promotion through positive word of mouth.

It can be tough to stay patient with certain customers — anyone who has ever worked in customer support can attest to that. That's why every service rep at your company must be equipped with the skills and strategies necessary to remain composed and courteous throughout every interaction they take part in.

By being courteous to customers, reps can create a better customer experience and increase customer delight . This, in turn, will positively impact the bottom line at your company. And the data shows it, too. According to Zendesk’s research, 75% of customers will buy more from a company that offers a good customer experience.

Why Is Courtesy Important in Customer Service?

Your customer service reps are on the front lines when it comes to shaping the public's perception of your business. Their demeanor speaks to the character of your company. If you want to project a positive image and retain customers, your reps need to be patient, easygoing, and — above all else — courteous.

Remember, no one wants to have to call customer support. The fact that someone is getting in touch with you means they're dealing with a problem. If you can help them work through their issues with patience and compassion, you can build trust between them and your business. And that trust will translate to referrals, recommendations, and a glowing brand image.

How? Customer courtesy often translates to loyalty, and loyalty often translates to new business. Customers — like anyone else — want to be treated with respect and decency. If your support department's operations consistently deliver on those principles, your customers will know that you value their business and that you appreciate them individually.

If they can expect that kind of attention, they'll see your business in a positive light.

They'll stick with you and, more importantly, speak highly of you. Excellent customer support is one of the best ways to turn a customer into an evangelist — a voice that consistently vouches for and promotes your business.

Word of mouth is still one of the most powerful resources for business promotion, and outstanding customer service can facilitate it. In fact, 81% of marketers said that exceptional service was the best way to generate positive word of mouth.

Customer courtesy is the bedrock for all of that. If your reps aren't careful, compassionate, and calm with customers, they won't be able to provide service that customers will be excited about — not enough to talk your business up to their friends, at least.

How Reps Can Improve Customer Courtesy

 • Ask the customer how they would like to be referred to.
 • Practice active listening.
 • Commit to every problem — even the ones you solve all the time.
 • Use personal pronouns.
 • Be empathetic.
 • Walk the customer through what you’re doing.
 • Escalate the issue to the right party.
 • Express some gratitude and offer more help when you sign off.

1. Ask the customer how they would like to be referred to.

There's a personal element to customer courtesy that you always have to account for. Let the customer know they're talking to a real person with a real interest in solving their problem.

Defaulting to calling them "sir" or "ma'am" can seem cold or calculated. Have them tell you how they want to be addressed. Doing so can add another dimension of authenticity and courtesy to your service interaction.

After, be sure to use that mode of address during the interaction. If the customer gives you their name but you don’t use it throughout the interaction, it’ll seem like you asked for no reason.

2. Practice active listening.

Hashing out a problem with a customer is a two-way street. If you want them to listen to you, you have to listen to them. It's crucial to learn and refine your active listening skills. Gently interject with short phrases, like "yes," "okay," "I see," or "go on" to facilitate the conversation. Let the customer finish speaking before troubleshooting. Ask questions, and rephrase their explanations of their issues in your own words.

Customer courtesy doesn't mean much if the customer doesn't feel like they're being heard. Active listening shows you're doing just that. It lets them know you care about them and the concern at hand.

3. Commit to every problem — even the ones you solve all the time.

As a support rep, it's almost a given that more than one customer will come to you with the same issue. Sometimes, you're so used to addressing that repeat issue that you can seem jaded when solving it for customers. It's tempting to take your foot off the gas in these cases, but you can't. You have to treat every issue with urgency and compassion — even the ones that come up all the time.

Customer courtesy occurs on a personal level, and you have to treat every customer accordingly. Give them a full, personalized support experience that they'll want to talk about — no matter what problem they come to you with.

4. Use personal pronouns.

Just like asking a customer how they want to be addressed, using personal pronouns will increase the personal element of customer courtesy. Use terms like "I" and "you" — avoid the term "we." Saying "we" in reference to the company as a whole comes off as impersonal and callous.

Show you have an interest in the customer as a person — not a revenue source. Customer courtesy is, in large part, a conversational art. Very few people refer to themselves as "we" in everyday conversation.

5. Be empathetic.

Chances are that you’ve dealt with an issue similar to your customer’s in the past. You may have needed to return an item and reach out to a company’s service team, or you may have needed to troubleshoot an issue with your order. Regardless of the industry you work in, you can do wonders to increase your courteousness by practicing empathy and seeing the issue from your customers’ perspective.

Even if the customer acts rudely toward you, you’ll be able to respond in a calm and self-possessed manner by understanding where they may be coming from. If customers exhibit poor behavior, it’s not necessary to excuse them — everyone needs to act courteously during a customer service interaction. But it is important to understand them.

And remember, if the customer is acting so poorly that it’s difficult to be courteous, feel free to transfer them to your manager when possible.

6. Walk the customer through what you’re doing.

If you’re on a call with a customer, let them know that you’re actively solving the issue by walking them through what you’re doing.

Don’t let there be silence between you and the customer, unless there’s nothing to say. If you’re trying to access their order history, you could say, “I’m accessing your orders right now.” Something so simple can go a long way in making the customer feel like you’re taking proactive steps to find the issue and resolve it.

7. Escalate the issue to the right party.

No one wants to hear that there’s nothing you can do for their issue. If it’s truly not within your power to fix the customer’s problem, be sure to escalate the issue to a party who can. This simple act of courtesy will take the customer service experience from serviceable to delightful.

It will show that you’re committed to helping the customer solve their problem, and that you’ve identified the right person who’ll be able to help them.

8. Express some gratitude and offer more help when you sign off.

In the interest of customer courtesy, your goodbye should be some combination of an expression of gratitude and an offer for further assistance — something like, "I'm happy I could help you out today, [name]. Is there anything else I can assist you with?" Let them know you're grateful for their business and always available for them should they need more help.

Customer courtesy will make all the difference.

Customers want to know they're valued — not just valuable. And the key to customer courtesy is conveying that you believe that. Demonstrate that you care through your conduct. Go the extra mile to make their experience that much easier.

The Fisherman’s house is directly north of the Chairman’s house across the wooden bridge. You won’t be able to enter this house. Just walk around the fishing nets outside the house to achieve this objective.

priest's house location

Lastly, you must find the Priest’s house located at the southernmost part of the Swamp. It is also the only house on a hilly area overlooking the Swamps. Moreover, you will also find the house destroyed. Once you enter it, you will find the Priest’s dead body. This will trigger the end of the objectives for Jaeger’s quest. However, you must safely exfil to complete the Courtesy Visit quest in Escape from Tarkov.

Miss Manners: What’s a polite way to ask well-meaning relatives to stop calling to check in on me?

 • Published: Apr. 24, 2024, 8:00 a.m.

"Miss Manners" Judith Martin

"Miss Manners" Judith Martin Courtesy Andrews McMeel Universal

 • Judith Martin

DEAR MISS MANNERS: My father passed several months ago, and I need a polite way to ask well-meaning relations to stop calling to check in on me.

I have an extremely large extended family, but we are not close. As I cared for my father in his final weeks, I saw many relatives I hadn’t seen in decades. Prior to that, our only interactions were on social media, and rarely at that.

Since then, several have been calling to “see how you’re doing” or to “lend an ear,” expecting that I’ll want to reminisce or receive emotional support.

The problem is that they knew my father as a wise, respected, favorite uncle and businessman. I knew a very different man -- one who communicated with a raised voice and fists. As his executor, I have also learned much about his business practices that I wish I hadn’t.

I would never divulge that I feel only relief at his passing, nor my reasons for feeling this way, as it serves no purpose to rob others of their treasured memories. I also realize that they may have their own desires for emotional support, but I don’t feel I can offer much in that regard.

I’ve thanked the callers for their thoughtfulness and assured them that I’m fine. I’ve changed the subject, I’ve asked how they are feeling and if they need support, and I’ve delayed returning calls.

It all seems only to confirm their belief that “it hasn’t sunk in yet” and that they’ll need to continue to call until I’m ready to discuss my feelings in depth. I’ve come to dread the phone ringing.

Is there a polite way to express that I truly don’t have a need to talk about my father’s passing and that there’s no need to continue to check on me?

GENTLE READER: Society used to recognize that grieving requires a period of mourning -- and that sometimes the best way to support a friend’s loss is, when they ask to be left alone, to leave them alone.

Although your situation is atypical, your need for privacy is not, and Miss Manners recommends you assert it. Thank your friends and family for their support, tell them you need some time to yourself now -- and, most importantly, turn off the ringer.

(Please send your questions to Miss Manners at her website, www.missmanners.com ; to her email, [email protected] ; or through postal mail to Miss Manners, Andrews McMeel Syndication, 1130 Walnut St., Kansas City, MO 64106.)

Many Americans Don't Know The World's Third-Largest Cruise Line - We Sailed MSC to The Caribbean to See What It’s Like

More than 35 million travelers will cruise this year, and many of them are sailing with MSC Cruises around the world. Relatively new to the American vacationer, this family-owned line started offering U.S. cruises in 1998 but has become more popular in North America in the past couple of years.

So, this Spring Break, my daughter and I took a 3-night cruise from Cape Canaveral Florida to the Caribbean to see for ourselves why so many Americans are hitting the sea for vacation, and increasingly with MSC Cruises.

So many of our friends and family rave about cruising and choose to vacation this way repeatedly. As a non-cruising family, we’ve been intrigued by all of their stories of exploration and family fun, and were excited to try it out for ourselves.

“Our data shows that the top things that Americans associate with cruising is having fun, being entertained, and relaxing. Being able to experience a new destination with new experiences nearly every day adds to the attractiveness of cruises,” shares Ben Harrell, Managing Director, U.S. at Booking.com. “Not surprisingly, almost one-quarter (22%) of Americans surveyed plan to take a cruise in 2024, which is nearly double the global average, and an increase from 2023.”

Why Are So Many People Cruising?

So many of our friends and family rave about cruising and repeatedly choose to vacation this way. As a non-cruising family, we’ve been intrigued by their stories of exploration and family fun and were excited to try it out for ourselves.

“Our data shows that the top things that Americans associate with cruising is having fun, being entertained, and relaxing. Being able to experience a new destination with new experiences nearly every day adds to the attractiveness of cruises,” shares Ben Harrell, Managing Director, U.S. at Booking.com . “Not surprisingly, almost one-quarter (22%) of Americans surveyed plan to take a cruise in 2024, which is nearly double the global average, and an increase from 2023.”

A OnePoll survey reveals that 60% of surveyed Americans don’t believe there are enough hours in the day to get everything done, let alone plan a vacation. A Cruise is an Easy Button in a Busy World

A OnePoll survey reveals that 60% of surveyed Americans don’t believe there are enough hours in the day to get everything done, let alone plan a vacation. And due to the all-inclusive nature, you won’t have to stress about going over budget either.

Whatever your budget, you’re sure to find a cruise to fit your needs and expectations – and the value is so much greater at sea than many land-based options,” continues McDaniel.

As a non-cruising family, I wasn’t familiar with Wave Season, typically from December to March. It is when cruise lines offer some of their best deals of the year. So if you’ve missed Black Friday offers, you still have time to lock-in sale prices at the beginning of each year. When’s the Best Time To Book a MSC Cruise?

However, sign up for the cruise line’s email list to be notified of mid-year offers, as you never know what sale you can catch. In early April, I received some very tempting email offers. We enjoyed ourselves on MSC so much that I just might take them up on one of them and book a longer trip. It looks like we’re cruisers now.

I love it every season! Here we go... A Pugger's Life! Gotta Catch 'em All Throughout the season you've run keys with other players on 39 different specs! You grouped with every spec this season 🎉 That moment when you can't replace Tier unless you get another Tier gear! (That was Gloves, the least amount of stats slot) Your biggest (non-legendary) gear upgrade of the season? 58 item levels! Unless Prot Pally is counted as "Meta", didn't play any Meta Spec. Your Most Popular Specs You've run Mythic+ on a total of 8 classes and 8 specs. AD being the most @ 103 runs and DOTI: Rise being the least @ only 39 Your Most Run Dungeons Here we go again! (and again... and again...) 00:00:00.9 Closest Key +25 DOTI: Galakrond's Fall You finished a total of 5 keys with less than 10 seconds left! You like cutting it close, eh? I need a "life".... You've run 469 dungeons across all your characters this season. That's over 8 days 9h 45m worth of Mythic+! Put another way, this is how long it would have taken to watch seasons 1 through 4 of the Stranger Things series 5.5 times. Once again, a Puggers Life! Your Mythic+ Buddies During Season 3 you pushed keys with 1774 other characters!

Kayaking in DC: Where to paddle the Potomac and more

By sophia barnes • published april 24, 2024 • updated on april 24, 2024 at 1:28 pm.

It's official: Kayaking season has arrived in D.C.! And if you ask us, it's one of the best ways to see the city from a new angle.

Maybe you want to cruise by some iconic sights with out-of-town guests, or you're looking for a quick but nature-filled escape. You can find both at the various kayak rental outposts along the Potomac River.

Boating in DC is the main company renting out kayaking and canoeing gear in D.C. proper. Four Boating in DC locations are open now, renting out all your gear for an hour or two of scenic paddling.

Prices may vary by location but generally start at $21 for a one-hour rental of a single-person kayak. Double kayak or canoe rentals, which are a good option for families with children, are available at many locations. Those start at about $31.

We're making it easier for you to find stories that matter with our new newsletter — The 4Front. Sign up here and get news that is important for you to your inbox.

Rental prices include life jackets, paddles and cushions. Staff members will help guide you into and out of the water and can give you a few pointers before you take off.

Kids aged 7 and younger can float with an adult "as long as they can safely sit independently and fit securely" in a personal flotation device, while kids ages 8 to 15 can have their own boat but must be accompanied by a guardian, Boating in DC says.

If you're looking for an option in Maryland, check out Bladensburg Waterfront Park Boat Rentals offered by the Prince George's County parks department.

What’s open now:.

Fletchers Boathouse is the most nature-filled location, letting you explore the C&O Canal and Potomac River. When rowing up the waterway, look to your left to try and find a hidden waterfall cove. You'll find the boathouse off Canal Road, south of the Chain Bridge.

 • Pro tip: We advise driving (there is parking!) or taking a rideshare. Google Maps will tell you that there's technically a route for pedestrians. But at Canal Road, you'll be walking alongside fast-moving traffic for a bit, then going down an often-busy driveway.

Key Bridge Boathouse and Thompson Boat Center in Georgetown are both great launching points to see the Kennedy Center and Lincoln Memorial. You can walk to both locations from the nearest transit stops in fewer than 15 minutes. Thompson Boat Center, which is near all the restaurants of Washington Harbor, will put you closer to the monuments.

 • Pro tip: Row to Teddy Roosevelt Island , park your kayak for a few minutes and stretch your legs.

The Wharf Boathouse is open Fridays to Sundays. It is one of two locations to offer hydrobikes.

Coming soon:

Ballpark Boathouse near Nats Park will be open on weekends starting Friday, May 3. It will also rent out hydrobikes.

The Washington Sailing Marina in Alexandria will open when the time is right in May.

Paddleboards: Rentals of stand-up paddleboards are expected to begin at all locations in May, once temperatures warm up.

Bonus: Paddle around submerged WWI-era ships

If you want an extra adventurous paddling experience, you must check out Mallows Bay in Charles County, Maryland.

The largest graveyard of abandoned naval ships in Western Hemisphere waters is now a vibrant nature preserve that can be experienced up close.

The ships are best seen during low tide. Tours are offered by Atlantic Kayak ($65-$85), REI ($120+) and occasionally the Potomac Riverkeepers.

Yes, 'Baby Reindeer' on Netflix is about real people. Inside Richard Gadd's true story

courtesy visit you

Santa has nothing to do with this reindeer.

There's a new Netflix series atop the streamer's most-watched chart that you might have heard about from disturbed friends and family. In the two weeks since it premiered on the platform, "Baby Reindeer," a heavy series in which a bartender and wannabe comedian (Richard Gadd) is stalked by a middle-aged woman has become a sensation.

Darkly captivating all on its own, fans are even more engrossed when they learn the series is based on a true story of stalking and abuse suffered by Gadd, who is also the series' creator.

So why is the deeply disquieting series suddenly so popular? And how much of the story is really true? We answer all your questions about "Baby Reindeer."

What is 'Baby Reindeer' about?

In just seven short episodes, "Reindeer" is both horrifying and fascinating. It tells the story of Donny, a fictionalized version of Gadd, who serves Martha (Jessica Gunning) a free cup of tea, unknowingly starting a yearslong odyssey that begins with thousands of harassing emails and gets worse from there. As the series progresses, Martha becomes more unhinged and violent, turning her anger on Donny's friends, girlfriend and family. "Baby Reindeer" is one of the many nicknames Martha gives the object of her obsession.

Amid the harassment and trauma, Donny reflects on past abuses he suffered that he believes made him a "sticking plaster" for a predator like Martha. In a flashback episode, he tells the story of Darrien (Tom Goodman-Hill), a much older comedian and writer who groomed and abused Donny over the course of many months. Darrien promised to help Donny's career, then fed the younger man drugs and sexually assaulted him while Donny was unconscious.

Donny's experiences with Darrien left him traumatized and hollow, ruining his relationship with girlfriend Keeley (Shalom Brune-Franklin). He becomes sexually confused, threatening a new courtship with Teri (Nava Mau), a transgender woman Donny is secretly ashamed to date. Martha's stalking, of course, does not help his relationship with Teri, either.

Is 'Baby Reindeer' a true story?

Yes. "Reindeer" is Gadd's memoir writ large. The series incorporates two stage shows by the comedian, each about a trauma he suffered. The original "Reindeer" began as a one-man show about Gadd's stalker at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2019 and later became an Olivier-winning play on London's West End. Before that, Gadd starred in his 2016 play "Monkey See, Monkey Do," another one-man show about the sexual violence and abuse he experienced, which he performed running on a treadmill pursued by a gorilla .

Although both Martha and Darrien are heavily fictionalized, fans have been investigating online to try to uncover their real identities, going so far as to accuse figures in British comedy of being Darrien. Gadd has condemned this type of amateur sleuthing. “People I love, have worked with, and admire ... are unfairly getting caught up in speculation,” he wrote in an Instagram Story on April 22. “Please don’t speculate on who any of the real life people could be. That’s not the point of our show.”

Is 'Baby Reindeer' any good?

"Reindeer" is "good" in the sense that it is impeccably crafted. Gadd wrote his story with substantial nuance. Martha is no cackling Disney villain, and Donny is no innocent lamb. The characters are real and raw rather than likable and perfect. The acting is top-notch, particularly from Gunning, who disappears into Martha's creepy skin. The stalker isn't romanticized or sexed up, but instead portrayed as mentally ill and deeply pitiful.

"Reindeer" is also emotional and vulnerable, the real story of some of the most horrific traumas anyone can experience. It is unsettling and terrifying; and nearly impossible to look away from. Though well made, it is not for everyone. The flashback episode is likely to prove triggering for the intensely graphic depictions of Darrien's assaults on Donny. It is the kind of onscreen violence that sits with you long after the credits have rolled.

Gadd says he wanted to capture the complexity of his own story, without creating a "victim narrative." In an interview with Netflix's fan website Tudum he said, “I think art is quite interesting when you don’t know who you are on the side of. I wanted it to be layered, and I wanted it to capture the human experience. The human experience is that people are good, but they have bits of bad and they make mistakes.”

The comedian has certainly captured his own very human experience. And you probably won't feel the same after you see it.

Maryland State Police Continue Search For Calvert County Boy Missing Since 1968

(PORT REPUBLIC, MD) – Maryland State Police are asking the public for assistance as investigators continue the search for a 10-year-old boy who was reported missing more than 55 years ago in Calvert County.

Bob Boyes was last seen on Dec. 26, 1968, while walking home with his pet deer on Wash Hance Road in Port Republic. Hundreds of volunteers searched for Boyes by ground and air, combing the wooded area where he was last seen.

“I’ll forever remember the response from the search team that Bobby disappeared in thin air, without a trace,” said Joy Lee, Boyes’ younger sister, who was three years old when he disappeared. “How does that happen? Walking home from the neighbor’s house with his pet deer. His deer comes home but without him.”

Maryland State Police have led the investigation into Boyes’ disappearance. The case turned cold after investigators ran out of leads. Detective Sergeant Kemery Hunt took over the investigation in 2021 shortly after being assigned to the Prince Frederick Barrack. He is hoping that attention to the case will spark new leads from the public.

“We’ve delved into this case deeply, and our plan of attack was to knock on every door that we can,” Detective Sergeant Hunt said. “The original investigators also poured a tremendous amount of time into this case, but it’s just a puzzle that can’t be solved.”

The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children and the FBI’s Wanted and Missing Persons are assisting with the investigation. According to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children , the FBI recorded nearly 360,000 entries of missing children in 2022, which is about a 6% increase from 2021. The center also assisted with nearly 28,000 cases of missing children in 2022.

Maryland State Police, in partnership with the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives (NOBLE) and the NOBLE Maryland Chapter, are distributing 15,000 National Child ID Program kits to protect children. The free kits aid law enforcement in locating missing persons. Visit a Maryland State Police barrack to obtain a kit. Troopers will also distribute them during community engagement events and recruiting fairs.

The search continues for Boyes , who would be 66 years old today.

“Deep down, I know, someone knows something, but time is ticking,” Lee said. “I’m pleading to anyone who may know anything to reach out to local authorities.”

Anyone with information that could help investigators find Boyes is asked to contact Detective Sergeant Hunt at 410-535-1400 or [email protected].
