Tour & Taxis’ sustainable reimagining in Brussels

Tour & Taxis, a former mail facility in Brussels, is reimagined as an eco-led, mixed-use quarter by Belgian developer Extensa and an array of leading architects

An indoor courtyard with planted trees, shrubbery and a large staircase at the end of it.

In the early 16th century, the aristocratic family of Thurn und Taxis bought a 45-hectare parcel of marshy land on the then-outskirts of Brussels. They had been appointed postmasters by Philip the Fair, the Duke of Burgundy, and held a similar position for the Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I. Their acquisition would become the centre of Europe’s first international postal service, a Thurn und Taxis enterprise connecting the Spanish Netherlands, Burgundy and Spain with the rest of Europe. The road that crossed the site’s collection of industrial buildings and horse-feeding pastures took the family name, translated into French as Tour et Taxis, giving birth to the district of Tour & Taxis.

By the beginning of the 20th century, it had evolved into a busy logistical ecosystem; goods arrived via train and canal and from there, they were dispatched. Everything passed customs and registration at the Gare Maritime, the complex’s central station. Unfortunately, with the arrival of the EU Customs Union, and later the Schengen Area, customs gradually became irrelevant and the operation obsolete. Tour & Taxis remained disused for 20 years until it was bought by local private developer Extensa in 2001.

Since then, Tour & Taxis has been undergoing something of a reimagining, swapping logistical revolution for sustainability as it seeks to reinvent itself as an eco-friendly district. The area, situated by the Brussels canal and just to the north-west of the Belgian capital’s centre, currently mostly consists of large converted warehouses and offices of brick, iron and glass next to the magnificent, historic, castiron-frame freight station. Extensa’s vision is anchored in the refurbishment of the existing historic buildings to ‘return Brussels’ heritage’ to its inhabitants, as well as a few new-builds. The first renovations and completions started opening in 2005. The aim is to create an eco-led, mixed-use district by restoring as many existing buildings as possible and introducing renewable-energy and energy-saving technologies.

The district’s industrial heritage means that most of the existing buildings are characterised by large volumes, so are well suited to become event spaces and offices. One of the first buildings to open in 2005, the Sheds – a sawtooth storage warehouse designed in 1903 by Ernest Van Humbeeck and reimagined for Extensa by local studio Archi 2000 – has four event spaces, accommodating 10,000 guests each, while Maison de la Poste – a 1904 Frédéric Bruneel building renovated by architects Altiplan in 2019 – is now a conference centre consisting of 15 event spaces that showcase its carefully restored industrial architecture. There are galleries in the refreshed Hôtel des Douanes (a 1907 building also by Van Humbeeck) and more are to come, repurposing the remaining historic buildings in the area. Meanwhile, the few new-builds on site include offices by Neutelings Riedijk (a project that is currently the largest Passivhaus scheme in Belgium), Cepezed, and Samyn and Partners.

The district’s flagship building is the Gare Maritime, whose architectural works were completed in autumn 2020. The retail and food hall within are scheduled to launch in September 2021, marking an important landmark in the area’s redevelopment. At around 45,000 sq m, it was Europe’s largest freight train station at the beginning of the 20th century. The building has now been refreshed, and 12 new cross-laminated timber (CLT) pavilions have been added within.

Gare Maritime is the area’s commercial heart, housing hospitality, shops and offices. It has been carefully restored and redesigned by a team consisting of architects Neutelings Riedijk, Bureau Bouwtechniek and JDMA, and engineers Ney & Partners and Boydens. One of the key design drivers was adherence to the circular economy, salvaging existing materials but also making sure that all interventions are both light-touch and demountable. It boasts the largest CLT structure in Europe and the building is energy neutral. Gardens, designed by landscape architects Omgeving, help regulate the internal temperature and are watered using the rainwater harvesting system.

Additionally, the site uses geothermal heat and 17,200 sq m of photovoltaics on the roof, marking the biggest move to solar energy in the capital. The developers are even bringing a tram line to the area by creating a new bridge over the canal (the water created a barrier that had so far been an obstacle in bringing public transport to this part of town). This, and the fact that many of the streets in Tour & Taxis are pedestrianised, means car use will be discouraged, although there will be underground parking space.

A number of apartment buildings are currently in construction. They are the start to what Kris Verhellen, Extensa’s CEO, hopes is a whole new residential neighbourhood, called Park Lane. Verhellen is acutely aware of the inevitable gentrification of the neighbouring area of Molenbeek, which has a sizable Maghrebi immigrant population. He talks about the scheme’s tax contribution and the state’s responsibility to create an economic system where immigrants aren’t priced out. While the scheme’s sustainability credentials are undeniable, one wonders whether more could be done to ensure links are created to existing communities.

It is true that some of the residential offerings will be rent-capped so that they remain affordable, while future plans include a school and a retirement home. A nine-hectare publicly accessible park, currently in construction, will include a community farm and a garden in an expanse of green that connects the site to the canal, making it one of the biggest parks in Brussels.

Do these interventions go deep enough into the fabric of the existing local community to engage them with the scheme in a meaningful way? Could more be done? One thing is for certain; if Tour & Taxis does deliver, it will provide a precedent of reuse and eco-friendly redevelopment that can be used in other historic settings. Which is exactly why it is important to ensure that social balance takes the same priority as environmental, as it has become increasingly clear that they are inseparable in the quest for sustainability.

Text description provided by the architects. Gare Maritime, once Europe’s largest railway station for goods on the Tour & Taxis site in Brussels, has been transformed into a covered city with a mixed program of working and shopping and plenty of public space to relax. Under impressive steel roofs, Neutelings Riedijk Architects designed the new Gare Maritime as a City District; ‘a city where it never rains’.

Gare Maritime Workspace / Neutelings Riedijk Architects + Bureau Bouwtechniek - Exterior Photography

Public gardens and squares.  The building dates from the beginning of the 20th century. Under the roofs of the side aisles, twelve wooden pavilions have been added to accommodate the new program. They create a new structure of boulevards and streets, parks, and squares that follow the urban context and the building structure in a natural way. The central space in the heart of the building has been kept open for public events. On both sides of the event space, the green walking boulevards are wide enough to plant ten large gardens.

Gare Maritime Workspace / Neutelings Riedijk Architects + Bureau Bouwtechniek - Exterior Photography

Largest CLT-project in Europe.  The new pavilions have been constructed in Cross Laminated Timber (CLT), with an enormous reduction in the amount of cement as a result. The choice for wood also had a favorable effect on the construction process: thanks to prefabrication and the dry constructing method, the construction time was considerably shorter.

State-of-the-art in sustainability.   Gare Maritime is entirely energy-neutral and fossil-free. The glass facades on Picardstreet are provided with solar cells and 17,000 m2 of solar panels have been installed on the roofs. At all levels, far-reaching sustainability measures have been implemented, such as geothermal energy and reuse of rainwater.

Tour & Taxis: an ecological neighborhood in Brussels

Once upon a time there was an ecological neighborhood integrated in one of the capitals of Europe, Brussels. A neighborhood that, after being abandoned for almost half a century, reemerged from its ashes through vertical forests that wrapped luxury apartments in the center of the old continent. Who invented this story?

We introduce you to the architect Vicent Callebaut , who, with just 39 years old, is revolutionizing the world of sustainable architecture. He alone (well, with his team of architects, of course) has invented 50 green projects in only 10 years.

With almost 40 years old, the architect Vicent Callebaut  is revolutionizing the world of sustainable architecture.

As he tells us, whereas most developing countries can write their future starting from a blank slate, European cities  face the challenge of transforming their historical heritage to secure their energy, social and economic transition towards post-carbon, circular and interdependent urban living.

And is it made? Callebaut Arquitects Paris gives us an example: its energy-plus & mixed-use masterplan in Brussels Tour & Taxis .

From storage coplex to ecological luxury neighborhood

Built between 1902 et 1907, Tour & Taxis used to be a large customs clearance and storage complex in the 20th century, located at the river, road and railway gates of Brussels. Covering 40 hectares of former wetlands, this industrial park is a worldwide symbol of industrialization’s golden age – its engineering, ironwork, stonework and natural light.

It lost its utility with the progressive lifting of Europe’s custom borders, but the Tour & Taxis neighborhood is currently undergoing a major renewal, and is once again on the verge of becoming an important vehicle for the economic and cultural development of Brussels, bringing in a sense of well-being and community.

The warehouses and sheds have been repurposed with corporate sustainability and the knowledge economy in mind, and a dedication to energy saving and the reuse of renewable energies .

The ultimate goal is to create a genuine mixed-use eco-neighborhood where it is pleasant to be, work, live and play; an eco-neighborhood along the Brussels canal, articulated around three axes: revitalization of the built heritage, sustainable communities, and water – says Vicent Callebaut.

This redevelopment is combined with the creation of a bridge for public, non-motorized and shared transportation that will link the Rue Picard on the south side of the site to the Gare du Nord train station .

Abandoned spaces are, for some architects, the best of the gifts they can find in their professional career.  We were determined to act as forward thinkers, and to bring our new project Tour & Taxis into the 21st century in terms of uses, technological progress, social innovation, and sustainable building principles.

Metamorphosis doesn’t mean eradicating the past, but rather integrating the best of the past into our future. Metamorphosis means selecting which components of the past will form the foundations of a future still to be imagined – says Callebout.

Sustainable metamorphosis

The project presented herein focuses on the metamorphosis of the Gare Maritime (Marine Terminal) into 50,000 square meters of mixed-use space composed of professional activities (offices, workshops, etc.), retail activites (markets, showrooms, shops, fablabs, etc.) and public amenities. Across from the pediment of the Gare Maritime, the project also includes the eco-design of three residential vertical forests  totalling 85,000 square meters, as well as the creation of a large pond bordered by a natural and biological pool which links the Tour & Taxis park to the Brussels canal .

Is or not is this a good sustainability lesson out of the box? As Callebaut concludes: To stretch the limits and think ouside the box; to have courage for oneself and for others; to challenge old structures and advance society and our way of life: that’s the most difficult task in the world, because it confronts the beliefs of predecessors and decision-makers. Our proposal for “Tour & Taxis” attempts to turn this ambition into a reality – step by step.

Brussels Design September: design of the past and present, at Tour & Taxis

On 23 and 24 September, there were two major presentations at the Brussels Design September festival, which brought together more than 100 events. The Brussels Design Market at the former Gare Maritime had 130 exhibitors from all over Europe. At the heart of this vintage market, interest in historic design, anchored for several decades in the 1950s to 1970s and Scandinavian furniture, shifted to the 1980s and a greater diversity of styles. Celebrating its 5th anniversary, Contemporary Design Market is now For the Now, showcasing the best of the current Belgian scene. At the entrance to the exhibition, visitors are greeted by a retrospective of recent creations by Julien Renault, who was awarded Designer of the Year 2023. There is also a tribute to the recently deceased designer Benoît Deneufbourg.

Hello the 1980s

Dealers present spoke of “a trend towards the 1980s and even the 1990s”, confirmed by several stands featuring chairs with characteristic graphic and playful lines, real exercises in geometry. E tre Mo derne ‘s stand is the clearest example of this. But above all, specialists in design buy and sell antiques they love. Christophe Guérard and his Anti Matière concept played the trump card of being different, with pieces of folk art, objects that smack of rural, regional and French traditions, but which appeal to everyone. Rustic, timeless, meaningful objects that have stood the test of time, like the blue workman’s jacket he wears. Farm tables and pews, wooden kitchen utensils, earthenware pots… Somewhere between a cabinet of curiosities and a rural eco-museum, his stand is a real pleasant surprise.

Stand Etre Moderne

In Damien Vancoppenolle’s collection, fine merchandise goes without saying, such as this Viennese armchair by Otto Wagner from 1910 or this sideboard with leather doors. Seen at the Kortrijk Biennale in 1976, it was published by Hi-Plan. A catalogue testifies to this. Brussels Design Market has always distinguished itself from a flea market by the quality of the second-hand products on display and the affordability of the prices. Despite the crisis, September’s edition remains on target. 1960s-style chest of drawers can be found for €300 to €450, and beautiful lighting fixtures for €60. Signed pieces are still very popular. Signed pieces are still very popular, such as Elio Martinelli’s Serpente lamp in table version for €1000 and floor lamp version for €1200. Also on display on Damien Vancoppenolle’s stand is the Gédéon lamp by Martine Bedin, a member of the Memphis group, a playful model made in 1984 and never re-released, priced at €750. There will also be lots of beautiful ceramics on show…

Focus on Christophe Gevers

This year, the creations of Christophe Gevers are in the spotlight. This Belgian designer, who died in 2007, is the subject of an exhibition at the Design Museum in Brussels (from 29/09/2023 to 08/01/2024), which holds the archives passed on by his wife Françoise. “We only know 10% of his work. Between large corporate restaurants, private construction sites and office cafeterias, his work is immense. In Brussels, he designed the Taverne des Beaux-Arts and the interior (still preserved) of the Au Vieux Saint-Martin restaurant on Place du Sablon, with its vermilion-coloured painted ceiling and characteristic space-saving furniture. A self-taught and now teacher, he was as much a designer as a set designer, interior designer and graphic artist. You could compare him to a Scarpa or a De Lucchi! He developed some very ingenious systems,” explains Thierry Belenger, collector and friend of Christophe Gevers, who organised his second exhibition in 2008. His stand features a chaise longue that turns into a simple chair, a logo designed for the fast-food chain Quick, models and prototypes made by the designer himself. Behind this space is publisher Quattro Benelux , which has been reissuing Christophe Gevers’ creations for 40 years: the TBA and CG73 chairs, the Cap d’argent stool in leather with a laced back, the CG73 and CG66 tables, etc. Other reissues are in preparation and the designer will be the subject of a monograph. Christophe Gevers’ old and unique pieces fetch high prices: €8,000 for a chandelier, €17,000 for a sideboard in teak and bluestone.

Wood in majestic style

At For the Now, Ghent-based designer Alexandre Lowie presents his new collection of tables with wooden tops, available in 12 sizes, 3 widths, 4 lengths and up to 3.75 m, as well as 7 types of wood and 12 colours for the legs. It stands out for its graphic and airy staple-shaped metal legs, which he designed himself. The solid 3 cm thick tops, with bevelled edges, are available in oak, ash, bubinga, ovangkol, elm, cherry or cipo. A bench and a stool complete the range, which can also be made to measure or in another type of wood, to order. At the very end of the room, creations by Frederick Van Humbeeck: this designer works with wood by burning it and treating it with an acid to bring out the material’s grain and velvety texture, which becomes moiré like a textile. One of his coffee tables features a mirror that reflects his carvings on the back of the top and curved base.

Tribute to textile design

Textile design is one of the highlights of this year’s show, featuring the work of Laure Kasiers. She creates rugs using a technique she developed herself. The braids of trimmings that she weaves by machine and folds by hand form organic patterns. On the floor or on the wall, as wall hangings, her creations evoke natural materials and play with light. Emma Terweduwe ‘s vibrant fabrics and Ana Maria Gomez  3D knitted creations, in collaboration with Omarcity (Amgs & Omarcity), are also worth a look. Unconventional rugs, mattresses, cushions and plaids create a cocooning atmosphere. The multifunctional rooms are very cosy and invite you to curl up, relax and let loose.

The silent creations of Julien Renault

Based in Brussels since 2009, Julien Renault has gradually established himself on the international scene. He works with Italian designers such as Mattiazzi, British brand Nine, Scandinavian companies such as Massproductions and Hay, for whom he recently designed the Pastis chair, reminiscent of southern France, bistros and the name of a Parisian brasserie in Copenhagen. His designs are discreet and functional, with an emphasis on timeless forms made to last. Elegant and simple, they are always personalised by a small detail, such as the Notes shelves he designed for Cruso. For this Belgian publisher, he recently designed small coffee tables in Valchromat (solution-dyed medium) that can be combined and separated according to the day’s activities. The playful Otap collection offers 4 round and square models in 7 colours that can be combined as desired.

Belgitude at the peak of its popularity!

Belgium may be a small and, admittedly, rainy part of the world, albeit brightened up by the characteristically sunny disposition of my compatriots, but I can safely say that it is also a rich country. A four-letter word that could be interpreted in a thousand and one different ways. I use the adjective here in the sense of profusion.

A profusion of talent, ideas and genres in so many sectors! Including our living environment. Belgian architects based here and elsewhere have already demonstrated what they are capable of in terms of project quality, perspective, harmony, tone and functionality. Belgian taste is highly appreciated abroad, and how many times have I heard it said on my foreign travels: “Ah, the Belgians, they’re so friendly and epicurean!” We get good press, and that suits us just fine…

VILLAS is looking ahead to 2024 with pleasure and passion. New ideas are coming thick and fast.

Tour the Ojai, California, Home of an LA Design Star

Tour the Ojai California Home of an LA Design Star

As a partner in the beloved Los Angeles decorative arts gallery Blackman Cruz , Adam Blackman naturally has access to a cornucopia of furnishings, objets d’art, and artwork spanning centuries. He’s got the pick of the litter. So it’s only logical that clients and devotees of the Blackman Cruz aesthetic (recently captured in the book Beauty & Mischief: The Design Alchemy of Blackman Cruz ) should be curious about the weekend getaway he shares with his wife, graphic designer Kate Blackman. Which treasures have the couple set aside for their personal pleasure? How do you decorate a home when you have a veritable king’s ransom in extraordinary furniture to choose from?

The site for these ruminations is a modest yet soulful home originally built in 1959 amid lush orange groves in Ojai, California. “We chose Ojai because of its proximity to LA. We wanted something easily accessible but still a world away from the hubbub of the city,” Adam explains. “Ojai has the feeling of old Greenwich Village or Venice [California] in the 1980s—a place with real energy, excitement, and eccentricity. It has a small-town feeling and a real sense of community. We’ve socialized more in Ojai than we have in 25 years of living in LA,” he adds.

“At first, we were looking for an older house, perhaps something from the 1920s. We weren’t thinking about another midcentury,” Kate says, referencing the couple’s classic A. Quincy Jones–designed home in the city. “The Ojai place has the character of a midcentury, but it skews much more rustic. Ultimately, it was the garden—the pepper trees, oaks, and agaves—that really sold us.”

In addition to the primary residence, the verdant compound encompasses a petite guesthouse, a studio/entertainment pavilion, and small garden and storage sheds. “Our approach to the renovation was strategic editing to pare everything back to the original vision. It was all about simplifying, organizing, and bolstering that indoor-outdoor connection so that the landscape, both near and far, is part of the experience,” Adam notes. As a case in point, he describes the installation of broad windows in the living room to capture views of Ojai’s Chief Peak.

The decorating portion of the renovation, although chockablock with fine furniture, does not flaunt its design trophies. Instead, the decor revels in alluring objects more closely aligned with the idiosyncratic spirit of the homeowners—pieces perfectly suited to the unpretentious character of the property and the community. In the studio, for example, one’s eye immediately alights on a 1960s aluminum Jetboard, a rare motorized surfboard conceived by Alfred Bloomingdale, scion of Bloomingdale’s empire. Installed as a wall-hanging sculpture, the surfboard joins a 12-foot-long sofa and a massive cocktail table of marble and brass, both set atop a Sarouk rug handed down from Adam’s grandma Rose.

In the dining room, a 1965 Pablo Picasso wall hanging of an abstracted mountain scene nods to the Ojai terrain. “It’s one of the pieces we acquired specifically for this house. It mirrors the view on the other side of the room,” Adam says of the Picasso textile, which is joined by a vintage Danish dining table and a chandelier from the Blackman Cruz Workshop collection. Another BC creation—a cocktail table of dripping bronze—anchors the living room in the primary residence, where it rests near a side table by Mexican designer Pepe Mendoza, whose work is represented throughout the home. In the home office, signature creations by an eccentric coterie of boldface names—Claes Oldenburg, Carlo Bugatti, Børge Mogensen—rub shoulders amicably, sparking intriguing design conversations. Mixed with other great furnishings of no particular pedigree or provenance, these 20th-century masters feel delightfully at ease in chez Blackman.

“We tried to cultivate a relaxed, comfortable vibe rather than an assemblage of ‘important’ design. It’s not about fine decorating or fancy living here,” Kate says of the overriding sensibility. Adam seconds the notion: “This place is our refuge from the hell of the city.”

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).

WFTS - Tampa, Florida

Learn the history of Tampa on a water taxi tour down the Hillsborough River

design tour & taxis

TAMPA, Fla. — Spring break is here, and everyone is looking for something fun and affordable for the whole family.

Luckily, the Tampa Water Taxi Tour is just that. The best part? The company hasn’t raised its prices in more than a decade.

Larry Salkin, the owner of Tampa Water Taxi, credits his ability to keep prices the same for the last 15 years to being an efficient businessman, something he said he learned in New York City operating a successful company he had to leave behind.

“After 9/11 and I watched the buildings fall, I was looking right at them; I said, you know what? Life is short. You better do what you want to do because you may not get the chance,” explained Salkin.

Tampa Water Taxi offers a variety of tours, including a Harbor and History Tour down the Hillsborough River.

Salkin is a natural-born storyteller who drops in little doses of trivia that even the most tenured Tampanians may not know.

“1891, that was built by Henry Plant, who built the railroads on the west coast of Florida,” said Salkin. “He built this at a cost of $3 million, which is just about a billion dollars today.”

Salkin also offers a tour of celebrity homes around Harbour Island, including the home once owned by Yankee great Derek Jeter and rented to former Bucs quarterback Tom Brady.

“You’re looking at the largest private home in Tampa right now—31,500 square feet built on four lots, each lot cost $2 million,” said Salkin.

Salkin also likes to make jokes while on the tour.

“Jeter asked Brady, 'Are you going to buy the house?' Brady said, 'No.' 'Why not?' 'This darn blue and yellow tour boat comes by every day, and I find it annoying,'" said Salkin.

Jeter sold that home a few years ago. Plans have been announced to level the current home and build a larger one on that spot.

If your family is interested in taking a Water Taxi Tour, spots are still available for spring break.

Children under eight ride for free, and adults are around $30. Tours last 90 minutes.

electric aircraft

This new airbus air taxi has a 50-mile range and is quieter than a hairdryer.

Avatar for Jennifer Mossalgue

Airbus has introduced its latest zero-emission eVTOL, designed to carry four people with a noise decibel range lower than a hairdryer when flying – which will radically cut into the noise pollution factor of a futuristic vision of eVTOLs buzzing around busy cities. Nearly five years in the making, this prototype targets a flight range of 50 miles (80 km) and a cruising speed of 75 mph (120 km/h).

Airbus’s latest prototype , the CityAirbus NextGen – unveiled at the opening of its new CityAirbus test center, which will be dedicated to testing systems for eVTOLs, in Donauwörth, Germany – is set to take its maiden flight this year.

The CityAirbus NextGen is an electric lift-plus-cruise vehicle designed for a variety of travel in major cities, including passenger transport, medical services, and ecotourism. Airbus says it will partner with operators and airlines to fly the model worldwide, with plans for it to take flight in Italy, Germany, Norway, and Japan, as well as regions in Latin America.

design tour & taxis

While at first, the CityAirbus will be flown by a pilot, it’s equipped with an operational automated flight mode that could enable future autonomous flying.

The aircraft, which can reach cruising speeds of 65 knots (about 75 mph) weighs two tons and has a 40-foot wingspan – so it’s by no means a tiny aircraft. It has a V-shaped tail, fixed wings, and a distributed electric propulsion system, with 16 electric power units and eight electric propellers. Back when Airbus introduced the NextGen design in 2021, it promised that these features keep sound levels to below 65 A-weighted decibels (dBA) during fly-over and below 70 dBA during landing – so that’s about the sound of a hairdryer or vacuum cleaner at landing, even less in flight. Perhaps closer to people talking loudly. Of course, Joby Aviation has its own air taxi that is 45.2 dBA when flying overheard, which it says is quieter than a typical conversation.

Electrek’s Take

Airbus is among many companies working on an electric aviation future, including US’s privately held Beta with its sleek CX300, a plane with a 50-foot wingspan, as well as establish players like Boeing and Embraer. In California, the aforementioned Joby Aviation and Archer Aviation, backed by companies like Toyota, Stellantis, and Delta and United Airlines,  are both developing battery-powered eVTOLs like Airbus’s. Since today’s batteries can support limited range and weight, these aircraft, for now at least, are designed to just carry a few passengers for short distances, putting their usefulness in competition with helicopters or even trucks for cargo. Of course the costs of producing these aircraft are astronomical to start, so we can just expect a few well-heeled passengers to be ferried around, or for critical services like medical evacuations on the immediate horizon, with the promise of a broader future on the horizon.

Then again, some companies have stopped gambling on an electric aviation future altogether and have turned their focus to low-carbon fuels.

Step inside the grand suites on the world's most famous train, which start at $26,000 a night and come with around-the-clock butler service

  • The Venice Simpon-Orient-Express is a luxury overnight train in Europe.
  • The train's grand suite, starting at $26,000 a night, is the top tier of accommodation.
  • Each grand suite has a private bathroom with a rainfall showerhead and extravagant decor.

Insider Today

Hundred-year-old carriages from the Orient Express fleet make up the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express , Belmond's revamp of the iconic luxury sleeper train. With 60 routes in 17 cities, the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express is perhaps the most luxurious train in Europe . Prices start at $9,000 a night.

The train's top-tier accommodation is a grand suite. With a starting rate of $26,000 a night, these rooms are filled with luxury details and amenities unique to any other cabin on board, from a private shower to around-the-clock butler service.

Business Insider recently took a tour of the rooms as a cabin steward explained the details of each suite.

Look inside the train's most extravagant accommodations to peek at the luxury journey of a lifetime.

The Venice Simplon-Orient-Express is the epitome of luxury train travel in Europe.

design tour & taxis

Guests are welcomed on red carpets for an overnight journey with lavishly decorated vintage carriages, fine dining restaurants, and jaw-dropping views of passing scenery.

The train has six grand suite accommodations — each with a unique design.

design tour & taxis

Grand suites are the third tier of accommodation — one step above a suite and two steps above a historic cabin .

Each grand suite is inspired by a city on the train's routes, including Venice, Vienna, Istanbul, Budapest, and Prague.

They all include a couch, a double bed that can be converted into two twins, a dining area, and a full en-suite bathroom.

All six have a full bathroom with a rainfall showerhead.

design tour & taxis

Each bathroom has a glass-blown sink, heated marble flooring, and a rainfall showerhead.

Grand-suite guests also get complimentary bathrobes and slippers.

Next to each bathroom is a closet with additional storage space so guests can fully unpack and feel at home.

Each has a dining area, too.

design tour & taxis

Grand-suite guests are greeted with caviar upon arrival and can dine in their rooms rather than in the restaurant cars if they prefer.

They also get 24-hour butler service and bottomless champagne for the entire journey, the cabin steward told BI.

The Venice grand suite fuses Italian Baroque and Renaissance design.

design tour & taxis

Venetian furniture, vintage glass light fixtures, and a combination of silk and woven fabrics fill this suite with a historic Italian ambiance. Navy-blue velvets are reminiscent of the train's exterior.

The headboard combining arches and sharp edges may remind one of the Renaissance castles in Italy .

Emerald and golden details mark the Vienna suite.

design tour & taxis

The suite has a classic feel with dark wood contrasting gold trimmings.

According to a Belmond fact sheet obtained by BI, the headboard backing is made of silk to evoke a sense of elegance. Its curved shape and the tassel detailing in the bed's skirt may remind travelers of the historic city's regal palaces .

The Istanbul suite feels like a Turkish palace.

design tour & taxis

Shiny, hand-carved wood from the furniture to the walls is a work of art. For those who have been to the Turkish city of Istanbul , the embossed leather and fabric embroiderings may bring back memories of the city's opulent offerings at the famous and historic Grand Bazaar market .

Gothic and Ottoman architectural styles inspired the Budapest suite.

design tour & taxis

The Budapest suite is decorated with ornate marquetry and furniture with embroidered silk patterns. The tall, curved headboard may remind travelers of Gothic cathedrals and mosques that date back to the Ottoman Empire .

The Paris suite is meant to evoke romantic vibes.

design tour & taxis

Inspired by the city's architecture, the Paris suite nods to art deco elements, classical facades, and the city's high-fashion reputation with a geometric headboard and detailed wooden marquetry.

And finally, the Prague suite nods to the city's theatrical culture.

design tour & taxis

Maroon and gold are the colors of the Prague suite to bring travelers a sense of the city's theater scene . Mosaic patterns inspired by cubism fill the walls, and cushions embroidered by hand add luxury details to the furniture.
