Of all the city's attractions , New Orleans' cemeteries are a one-stop shop for learning about family traditions, history, Voodoo, jazz music and burial practices for above-ground tombs. However, some cemeteries, such as St. Louis Cemetery No. 1, require you to join a guided tour to visit. These tours differ from New Orleans' ghost tours , which tell spooky stories of NOLA's legendary spirits and visit haunted spots around the city.

To help you select which tour is right for you, U.S. News created this list of the best New Orleans cemetery tours, informed by both expert and traveler opinion. No matter which outing you choose, you're sure to have a ghoulishly good time.

Cemetery Tours NOLA – The Official Tour of St. Louis Cemetery No. 1

Price: Adults from $25; kids from $18 Duration: 45 minutes

Licensed guides delve into the unique burial customs and above-ground crypts found throughout the famous 18th-century cemetery. Among the tombs you'll spot are those belonging to Voodoo queen Marie Laveau, numerous New Orleans city mayors, as well as Homer Plessy (plaintiff in the United States Supreme Court decision Plessy v. Ferguson). Reviewers appreciate that the cemetery is restricted to guided tours and praise the experienced and humorous guides for their vast knowledge of the cemetery and the city in general.

Tours depart daily every 15 minutes from 9 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. Advance reservations are recommended. Groups are limited to 20 guests per tour.

Frequently Asked Questions

Cemetery tours are popular in New Orleans because cemeteries here are unlike most cemeteries in the U.S. Many of the departed are buried above ground in tombs that range from simple to ornate. Plus, these sites are reportedly haunted, making cemeteries all the more popular with ghost hunters.

There are some cemeteries you can visit on your own. Others, such as St. Louis Cemetery No. 1, can only be viewed on an official tour. It's a good idea to find out whether your cemetery requires a tour guide before your visit; call the cemetery or speak with your hotel's concierge.

St. Louis Cemetery No. 1 is the most famous cemetery in the city. In part, this is because of the numerous important figures buried here. It's also the oldest existing cemetery in New Orleans; in fact, people are still laid to rest here each year.

Voodoo practitioner Marie Laveau, activist Homer Plessy, writer Anne Rice and Popeyes founder Al Copeland are just a few of the celebrities buried in the most famous cemeteries in New Orleans. There are other famous individuals (such as politician Huey Long and musician Fats Domino) who are buried in other sites around the city. Actor Nicolas Cage will also be buried here; he has already built a pyramid tomb for himself in St. Louis Cemetery No 1.

Experiencing this gorgeous place on our minibuses is far superior to walking on foot. You’ll have an amazing local tour guide who will help you see all the must-see spots and provide you with the vacation of a lifetime.

Some amazing places you can expect to see on our city and cemetery tour are:

French Quarter

If you’re looking for something that is truly out of this world, you will love the crown jewel of New Orleans! Vieux Carre, better known as the French Quarter, is an extremely historical and cultural place, where you’ll find numerous things and attractions you’ve been dying to see!

Whether you’re looking for incredible sights and shops, or you’re more into the cultural aspects of tourism, this place will be a dream come true. With numerous attractions and gorgeous architecture, the French Quarter is an amazing place you definitely have to visit to experience New Orleans fully.

The French Quarter offers numerous eateries and high-class restaurants. There are restaurants with extensive menus and a booming nightlife. You will never find yourself bored at this fascinating destination.

If you’re more into museums, the French Quarter has got your back! The French Quarter boasts a stunning collection of museums and galleries, so you can experience a touch of poise and antiquity in this vibrant community.

Cemetery Tour & Cities of the dead

Another amazing attraction we’re taking you on is our adventurous and enticing cemetery tour. If you’re into history and the antique, or if you’re looking to experience and see something unusual and different, the above-ground tombs and mausoleums of New Orleans will prove themselves to be an unbelievable experience!

The tombs of New Orleans are mostly above ground. With water levels being so low, if you dig down even a little bit, you’re likely to strike some water. Therefore, it wouldn’t be wise to bury loved ones in this environment. This made people bury their loved ones above ground, making for some breath-taking sights and monuments.

Cities of the dead existed for centuries, and you’re likely to find all sorts of people buried here from all walks of life. Pirates, voodoo shamans, politicians, and regular folk are buried side by side, in gorgeous and culturally rich mausoleums.

The cemeteries are a great tour option and will make for some unforgettable memories and photographs. But remember to be respectful, these are graveyards after all!

Faubourgs Treme

Faubourgs Treme is another neighborhood you’ll see on our city and cemetery tour, and it’s one you can’t allow yourself to miss out on! This is an extremely culturally rich neighborhood, with its fame stemming from the tight-knit connection with jazz music.

If you’re interested in jazz, this will be an amazing destination for you! Even if you’re not into jazz and you’re looking for a little interesting history, you’ll be taken back by the richness of this neighborhood.

Faubourgs Treme boasts an extremely important pillar in African American history and is representative of the battle for the rights that numerous minorities have had to fight for. It offers the world-famous Congo square, which is a place where slaves used to come together to create music.

This whole neighborhood is extremely rich with gorgeous architecture and is famous for its blend of old and new. The neighborhood combines the history of hardship and rough times with gorgeous modern architecture.

History and culture aren’t only represented in the streets of this amazing neighborhood, but also in its bars, clubs, and eateries. If you’re looking to experience a delicious bite at a historic restaurant or to grab a drink at the local watering hole, all the while being serenaded by great music, you’re in for a treat!

Garden & Warehouse Districts

When it comes to culturally rich and modern places, the garden and warehouse districts of New Orleans are a bombshell that you absolutely can’t miss out on!

The Warehouse District has a very rich history and is a great industrial styled place that is sure to mesmerize every passer-by. It has some amazing galleries and museums, alongside some trendy and modern takes on tourism. Here, you’ll find DIY shops, artsy bars and pubs, and some amazing award-winning restaurants to satisfy anyone's pallet!

Unlike the Warehouse District’s trendy and industrial feel, the Garden District offers you a reconnection with nature through its gorgeous city design. Everything is enveloped in nature and styled to preserve as many beautiful and lush trees as possible!

The Garden District also offers you one of the biggest zoos in the world. The Audubon Zoo, the Audubon Park, and the Audubon Aquarium are all staples of this amazing New Orleans district and are sure to fulfill any desire you might have. From looking at exotic animals to spending a laid-back day having a picnic in a huge park, you’re in for a wild ride.

Cemetery Tours

Your memories of new orleans' cities of the dead will linger long after your visit.

Marie Laveau Tomb - St. Louis Cemetery No. 1

New Orleans is a city surrounded by water and built below sea level. This is why our departed spend eternity entombed above ground. Here, graves are family affairs, with remains settling over time to make room for the next generation to move in to what we call the Cities of the Dead. Ornate and historic, funky and other worldly, New Orleans cemeteries are home to everyone from music hit makers to voodoo queens. Tour companies will show you who’s who and explain the history and traditions. Pay homage to fallen yellow fever victims at St. Louis No.1 on Basin Street, the city’s oldest boneyard or visit some of the newer, just as elaborate places.

Here is a list of companies that offer cemetery tours:

Fabulous tour! Oriel was so knowledgeable being a native of New Orleans! We did the tour early in our stay which helped us decide what to do next.

We took a tour with the "Oreo cookie and Arial the mermaid as she said😊 this young lady was more than amazing, she was very informative and entertaining.

Our guide, Kris with a K was awesome!!! Very knowledgeable, great humor and made it even more enjoyable. Favorite part was the cemetery.

We really enjoyed the tour and would recommend it to everyone who visits the big easy. The tour guide was very knowledgeable and entertaining.

My wife and I went on this tour we got to see a lot— French quarter, Garden district, Treme, St. Louis Cemetery, district where hurricane Katrina hit, and Lake Pontchartrain.

On some pages, you can select how to sort the results we display and also use filter options to see only those search results that meet your chosen preferences. You'll see explanations of what those sort options mean when you select them.

If you see a Badge of Excellence label, the award is based on average review ratings, share of bookings with a review, and number of bookings through Cool New Orleans over a 12-month period.

The importance of any one factor over any other in a sort order varies, and the balance is constantly being reviewed and adjusted. We're always updating our systems and testing new ways to refine and improve your results to make them as relevant as possible to meet your needs.

Compliance status

Screen-reader and keyboard navigation.

  • Screen-reader optimization: we run a background process that learns the website’s components from top to bottom, to ensure ongoing compliance even when updating the website. In this process, we provide screen-readers with meaningful data using the ARIA set of attributes. For example, we provide accurate form labels; descriptions for actionable icons (social media icons, search icons, cart icons, etc.); validation guidance for form inputs; element roles such as buttons, menus, modal dialogues (popups), and others. Additionally, the background process scans all of the website’s images and provides an accurate and meaningful image-object-recognition-based description as an ALT (alternate text) tag for images that are not described. It will also extract texts that are embedded within the image, using an OCR (optical character recognition) technology. To turn on screen-reader adjustments at any time, users need only to press the Alt+1 keyboard combination. Screen-reader users also get automatic announcements to turn the Screen-reader mode on as soon as they enter the website. These adjustments are compatible with all popular screen readers, including JAWS and NVDA.
  • Keyboard navigation optimization: The background process also adjusts the website’s HTML, and adds various behaviors using JavaScript code to make the website operable by the keyboard. This includes the ability to navigate the website using the Tab and Shift+Tab keys, operate dropdowns with the arrow keys, close them with Esc, trigger buttons and links using the Enter key, navigate between radio and checkbox elements using the arrow keys, and fill them in with the Spacebar or Enter key.Additionally, keyboard users will find quick-navigation and content-skip menus, available at any time by clicking Alt+1, or as the first elements of the site while navigating with the keyboard. The background process also handles triggered popups by moving the keyboard focus towards them as soon as they appear, and not allow the focus drift outside of it.Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Disability profiles supported in our website

  • Epilepsy Safe Mode: this profile enables people with epilepsy to use the website safely by eliminating the risk of seizures that result from flashing or blinking animations and risky color combinations.
  • Visually Impaired Mode: this mode adjusts the website for the convenience of users with visual impairments such as Degrading Eyesight, Tunnel Vision, Cataract, Glaucoma, and others.
  • Cognitive Disability Mode: this mode provides different assistive options to help users with cognitive impairments such as Dyslexia, Autism, CVA, and others, to focus on the essential elements of the website more easily.
  • ADHD Friendly Mode: this mode helps users with ADHD and Neurodevelopmental disorders to read, browse, and focus on the main website elements more easily while significantly reducing distractions.
  • Blindness Mode: this mode configures the website to be compatible with screen-readers such as JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver, and TalkBack. A screen-reader is software for blind users that is installed on a computer and smartphone, and websites must be compatible with it.
  • Keyboard Navigation Profile (Motor-Impaired): this profile enables motor-impaired persons to operate the website using the keyboard Tab, Shift+Tab, and the Enter keys. Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Additional UI, design, and readability adjustments

  • Font adjustments – users, can increase and decrease its size, change its family (type), adjust the spacing, alignment, line height, and more.
  • Color adjustments – users can select various color contrast profiles such as light, dark, inverted, and monochrome. Additionally, users can swap color schemes of titles, texts, and backgrounds, with over 7 different coloring options.
  • Animations – epileptic users can stop all running animations with the click of a button. Animations controlled by the interface include videos, GIFs, and CSS flashing transitions.
  • Content highlighting – users can choose to emphasize important elements such as links and titles. They can also choose to highlight focused or hovered elements only.
  • Audio muting – users with hearing devices may experience headaches or other issues due to automatic audio playing. This option lets users mute the entire website instantly.
  • Cognitive disorders – we utilize a search engine that is linked to Wikipedia and Wiktionary, allowing people with cognitive disorders to decipher meanings of phrases, initials, slang, and others.
  • Additional functions – we provide users the option to change cursor color and size, use a printing mode, enable a virtual keyboard, and many other functions.
