A good travel pillow can make a world of difference on long trips. Ideally, the pillow will provide support for your neck or body so that you can sleep in a relaxed position, even on cramped, uncomfortable plane rides . Choose a pillow that suits your sleeping style and try different positions to find where you are most comfortable.

Traveling with a Neck Pillow

Step 1 Try your neck pillow before buying it.

  • Some inflatable pillows self-inflate. Typically, this involves turning a valve which will then cause the pillow to slowly inflate, but check your pillow’s instructions to see how yours inflates. [2] X Research source
  • Non-inflatable travel pillows are typically filled with foam or microbeads. While they are less convenient for packing, you may find that they are more comfortable.

Step 3 Cover your pillow in a T-shirt or scarf to make it softer.

  • You can also buy a removable cover for your pillow. Just make sure it fits your pillow before buying it.

Step 4 Place the pillow around your neck.

  • If your pillow is not U-shaped, it may be designed to fit between your shoulder and head. This type limits which direction you can rest your head in, so it’s best for sleepers who don’t change position much.

Step 5 Recline your seat.

  • U-shaped pillows are ideal for this, since they provide a space to put your face while resting your forehead directly on the pillow. Otherwise, you will have to turn your face to the side, which may become uncomfortable after long periods.

Using a Body Pillow

Step 1 Travel light to save more space for your pillow.

  • Body pillows range in size, but some may be as long and wide as your torso.

Step 2 Wear loose clothing for comfort.

  • If you find that the pillow is too firm for comfort once inflated, you can deflate it slightly to create a softer surface.
  • If you are not worried about space, you may prefer a body pillow that is not inflatable, such as one filled with foam or microbeads.

Step 4 Attach the pillow to your seat or seatbelt if possible.

  • If your pillow attaches to the seatbelt, move it up to where you can comfortably lean your head against it.
  • If the pillow attaches to the back of your seat, position it so that you can lead forward at a comfortable angle and rest your head against the pillow.

Step 5 Lean forward or sideways onto your pillow.

  • Your body pillow may have a J-shaped curve on each end. The larger curve will fit over your shoulder, and the smaller curve can be tucked under your opposite arm to help keep it in place.
  • Some body pillows are designed to rest on your lap or tray table and support your upper body while you lean forward.
  • If you want to sleep comfortably in economy class, choose an aisle seat so that you don't have to wake the people in the aisle to go to the bathroom.
  • Use a white noise app on your phone with comfortable headphones to block out all the noise people are making.
  • Wear an eye mask to block any light.

About This Article

To use a neck travel pillow, blow it up if it’s inflatable, and place it around your neck. Or, hook it on one shoulder to give you a higher pillow. If you have a spare t-shirt, sweater, or scarf, cover your pillow with it to make it softer. Recline in your seat and lean your head on the pillow to support your neck. Alternatively, if you normally sleep on your front, place the pillow on the fold-out table in front of you and sleep leaning forward. Sitting upright for hours on end can be incredibly uncomfortable, but a travel pillow can make your trip a lot more tolerable. Whether embarking on a red-eye flight or taking the train, the best travel pillows will be comfy, supportive, and portable.

We tested 24 travel pillows based on traits like comfort, durability, portability, and quality. We narrowed down the best options while using the accessory for road trips, long-haul flights, and train rides. Our top pick for the best travel pillow overall is Cabeau The Neck's Evolution S3. We love that this pillow folded down into its own, compact carrying case and comes with a washable cover to keep it fresh between trips. We also found the best pillow choices for travelers who like a softer or firmer pillow along with styles that are perfect for middle seats and budget-conscious travelers, too.

Best Overall

Cabeau tne s3 travel pillow.

  • Comfort 4.5 /5
  • Quality 4.8 /5
  • Portability 5 /5
  • Durability 5 /5

The seat strap system keeps the pillow in place and prevents painful neck cramps.

It can feel stiff at first and takes some getting used to.

This soft and supportive travel pillow is the perfect accessory for long trips, whether you're in the car or in the air. The pillow itself can attach to any headrest with adjustable straps to prevent your head from sagging or falling into uncomfortable positions while sleeping. There's also an adjustable chin strap for added comfort and security. The pillow's exterior fabric is soft and cozy, yet breathable so you don't feel too hot or constricted although it can take some time to find your perfect position.

We also love that the pillow case is machine washable. We tested this pillow on a long international trip where it really got tossed around on planes, trains, and buses, so it felt great to wash the cover at the end of the trip, making it good as new. Despite its fairly large size, the pillow is also quite portable as it rolls up into a compact carrying case that can attach to a bag's exterior or slip into larger backpacks and totes.

Best Overall, Runner-up

Cushion lab ergonomic travel neck pillow.

  • Comfort 4 /5
  • Quality 5 /5

The pillow has an asymmetrical design that allows travelers to adjust the amount of support needed.

It can have a snug fit.

The Cushion Lab Ergonomic Travel Neck Pillow can make your trip much more comfortable, whether in the middle seat of a plane or a car. With an ergonomic design, one side of the pillow is larger than the other to support the chin if your head tilts while sleeping, and the back has a cushion that is contoured to keep the head in an upright position. During testing, the neck pillow provided a comfortable rest for the chin, and we didn’t feel too hot while wearing it. Although the cushion fits snugly around the neck, it didn’t take long to get used to it, and we could nap comfortably during a train and car ride. The buckled strap was easy to adjust, and we liked having the ability to spin the pillow around to use the asymmetrical sides and back to find the most comfortable position for sleeping in the window and middle seats. With a soft, recycled polyester exterior and Cushion Lab’s extra-dense memory foam, the quality of the travel pillow is luxurious and sturdy, and it folds into a small ball to fit inside a carrying bag that can clip onto a backpack or a suitcase.

Best budget, cloudz microbead travel neck pillow.

  • Comfort 5 /5
  • Quality 4 /5

It molds to the shape of your neck to prevent bobbing.

The cover can't be removed and washed.

The Cloudz Microbead Travel Neck Pillow is a no-frills option that offers generous neck support for a budget-friendly price. It is filled with tiny microbeads that quickly mold to the shape of your neck and prevent your head from bobbing around while sleeping. We appreciated its lightweight but sturdy feel, and that there were no signs of damage after using the neck pillow or when clipping it onto a suitcase to transport. Although the cover can’t be removed, we noted that the fabric is easy to touch up with instructions to spot clean the surface as necessary. Cozy and breathable, the travel pillow did a solid job of regulating temperature and keeping the neck warm during cold flights and cool during hot flights.

The Details: Polyester, microbeads | No portable case | Machine washable

Best Splurge

Ostrich pillow go neck pillow.

The pillow has an asymmetrical design that can accommodate neck, chin, and head support preferences.

It might warm your neck if you run hot while sleeping.

The Ostrich Pillow Go Neck Pillow feels like sleeping on a cloud. This travel pillow provided the perfect amount of neck support and comfort, allowing us to get more rest on a flight than usual. The plush memory foam filling and asymmetric design can be easily adjusted to support the neck, chin, or head with the taller or shorter sides. The materials appear high-quality and luxurious, and it rolls up to fit in a compact drawstring sack. The pillow holds its shape despite being in the bag for long periods, which leads us to believe that it will hold up well with prolonged use. The pillow cover is removable and can be machine washed, but we air dried it to ensure it didn’t shrink (and had no issues putting it back on the pillow). A must-have for those with higher budgets, this pillow allowed for better sleep and more comfort on flights.

Best Cooling

Cabeau evolution cool pillow.

  • Quality 4.5 /5

The mesh air vents make the pillow breathable.

It’s made of firm memory foam.

The Cabeau Evolution Cool Pillow is a great pick for travelers that get warm quickly. The pillow is designed to prevent heat from building up as you wear it as mesh vents in between two layers of cushiony memory foam filter in the air. We liked the breathability feature and moisture-wicking fabric, and said we didn’t feel overheated while using it on an airplane or road trip. While it took a moment to get situated, once the pillow was in the most comfortable position, it was extremely supportive and firm without feeling too hard. We especially liked the portability of the already lightweight pillow (thanks to its durable-feeling carrying case), and the mesh pocket for storing small accessories. This pillow quickly unfolds to its original shape despite being rolled up and going in and out of the compact case as well.

The Details: Memory foam | Portable case | Machine washable

Best Sustainable

Therm-a-rest compressible pillow.

  • Portability 4 /5

It’s made of recycled and upcycled materials that are comfortable and breathable.

It doesn’t offer neck support like a regular travel pillow.

If you’re not a fan of the typical U-shaped travel pillow, the Therm-a-Rest Compressible Pillow is a great alternative. It resembles the rectangular style of a traditional pillow, and it compresses down to be easily transported whether you’re flying or camping. The recycled polyester fabric is light and breathable, and the foam filling — made from extra polyurethane foam left over after producing REI’s sleeping pads — provides a soft cushion for your head. We also loved how durable it is, especially for various uses like camping, flying, or taking a nap at home. While the pillow doesn’t come with a carrying bag, it has a toggle strap to compress it into a smaller size and a built-in cover that you fold the pillow into for protection while traveling.

The Details: Recycled polyester, polyurethane foam fill | No portable case | Machine washable

Best for Window Seats

J-pillow chin-supporting neck pillow.

It’s easy and intuitive to use for resting your chin and head.

It could be more supportive when you’re leaning against a window.

The J-Pillow Chin-supporting Neck Pillow has a J-shape that wraps around the neck to support the chin and the front, back, and one side of the head. Despite the different design than a typical U-shaped travel pillow, it is easy to use and fits securely while sleeping or resting during travels. The pillow comes with a compact case that can be attached to a piece of luggage to make traveling with it effortless. After being folded up in the carrying case for some time, the J-shape didn’t falter, and remained supportive and soft. We think the J-Pillow is ideal for any type of traveler since it's very portable and lightweight.

Aeris Memory Foam Travel Pillow

  • Durability 4.5 /5

It’s supportive without feeling too stiff.

This would be best for travelers who know they prefer a firm travel pillow.

We love the comfortable and supportive Aeris Memory Foam Travel Pillow for travelers that like a firmer neck pillow. The buckle strap adjusts accordingly to fit around your neck, and offers 360-degree support on the chin, jaw, and back. We loved how you can lean back in the car or plane, and the back of the neck doesn't fall backward. In addition to having exceptional support, the Aeris travel pillow folds into a small ball and easily fits into the circular carrying case that can clip onto a backpack or suitcase without being a noticeable nuisance. The holder also has a frontal slip pocket for storing the earplugs and eye mask that are included with the travel pillow. After a trip, the carrying case can be unzipped and machine washed, although we recommend air drying it to prevent any possibility of shrinkage.

Best Side Support

Cabeau evolution s3 travel pillow.

  • Durability 4 /5

This pillow is soft and durable.

The suede-like outer material has a tendency to pick up lint.

This travel pillow was designed to keep your head and neck supported for even the longest of flights. Not only is the semicircular pillow adjustable, so you can get the shape perfect for you, it also features and adjustable seat strap to prevent your head from dropping while you rest. Right out of the box, we loved the high-quality of the memory foam, which makes it supportive and soft, and the cover material feels great against the skin. It gives users a great balance of softness and support. To keep your pillow protected and prevent any risk that it will end up getting dragged across the airport floor, this also comes with a compact carrying case that compresses down to fit into carry-on luggage.

Gingerlily Silk Travel Pillow

  • Portability 3 /5
  • Value 3.5 /5

To protect your hair and skin throughout your travels, a silk pillow is the way to go.

It's 12 x 16 inches, so make sure you have plenty of room to pack it.

For those who love sleeping on silk pillowcases at home, this mini version for travel is an absolute must. Yes, it can be pricey to buy silk travel accessories , but it's also expensive to ruin a blowout and have to find a salon on vacation (and there's no price to be put on fresh, clean skin). This silk pillow is smaller than a standard pillow at 12 inches wide and 16 inches long, but can still be used in bed in a pinch and is perfect for trains, planes, and cars — just make sure you have the space in your carry-on bag. After using this pillow for multiple long trips, it shows no signs of loose stitches, fraying, or pilling. Rather, the pillow feels like it will last without ever going limp or flat.

Other Travel Pillows We Liked

While we were able to narrow down the travel pillows for our best list, there were some that almost made the cut but didn’t due to a few weaknesses noted by our testers.

Hest Pillow : This standard pillow is on the softer side yet still provides support and comfort while laying on it, but the fabric is slightly itchy, and it’s bulky to carry around, even when compressed.

Gingerlily Silk Travel Neck Pillow : We love that this pillow is high-quality and made with luxurious material, but it doesn't come with a carrying case, which we think you would need to keep this pillow protected.

Cabeau Evolution Classic Travel Neck Pillow : While the memory foam is the perfect balance of firm and soft, we found this pillow to be just a bit too bulky for frequent travel.

Travel + Leisure / Daniela Galvez

We sent out 24 travel pillows to our testing experts to use during their upcoming trips. To thoughtfully curate this list, we researched popular options to fit a variety of comfort preferences, including pillows made of memory foam and microbeads, and tested different shapes, too.

On a scale of one to five, our testers rated the pillows based on comfort, quality, durability, and portability. The pillows with the best comfort scores met or exceeded our expectations for special features, including cooling, firmness, softness, or other claims by the manufacturer. Our testers used the pillows for several hours at a time, if not longer, to see how comfy they were while sleeping, reading, or watching a movie while traveling. We asked our testers to note if they were able to sleep with the pillow on, if it caused any neck pain or discomfort, and how warm or cool the pillow felt around the neck. To check for quality and durability, our testers examined the build of the pillow to feel how well-made it appeared. After using the pillows during trips, they judged durability based on their functionality after several uses. The pillows with the highest score for portability were able to compress down into carrying bags that allow travelers to transport the pillow with exceptional ease. The best pillows also kept their shape after being tucked away into a case and always sprang back into their original form with no signs of damage.

Tips for Buying a Travel Pillow

Prioritize neck support.

When it comes to sleeping in planes, trains, or cars, you should focus on your neck and head support. When your head drops during sleep, it restricts your breathing and can leave you with a sore neck or even a headache. Your travel pillow should be supportive enough that your neck stays securely upright without feeling as though you're being squeezed.

Portability is key

Whether you pack light or over-pack, a travel pillow that compacts into a small carrying case is ideal for bringing along on trips. Of course, some travel pillows don’t compress, but they should still be easy to clip onto a suitcase and not bump into too many things if you’re traversing an airport or train station.

Consider the filling material

Travelers who like a more firm pillow should opt for a memory foam filling that can offer more support than an inflatable alternative. Microbead pillows can be just as supportive as memory foam ones, but they tend to be on the softer side and more suited to travelers that like a little less structure while sleeping.

Generally, washing instructions will be included with the purchase of a travel pillow or on its tag. Removable covers can usually go through a machine wash, but many of our testers opted to air dry the cover to prevent any shrinkage that could happen in a dryer. If a pillow doesn’t have a removable cover, you can spot clean the pillow by using a wet cloth or rag dipped into soapy water.

Most standard travel pillows have a semicircular shape that wraps around the neck to support the neck, head, and chin. These U-shaped pillows often have memory foam or microbead filling, but there are also inflatable neck pillows. In addition, standard pillows make great travel pillows, and plenty of rectangular-styled pillows compress down for better portability. Finally, while traditional pillows might be better suited for a traveler in the window seat, there are unique J-shaped travel pillows that are perfect for supporting the neck and head of someone sitting in the middle or aisle seat.

The Best Travel Pillows for Long-Haul Flights

By Lauren Burvill

Shot of a passenger sleeping on the bus

All products featured on Condé Nast Traveler are independently selected by our editors. However, when you buy something through our retail links, we may earn an affiliate commission.

If you travel regularly you’ve probably learnt to spot the difference between a frequent flier and a rookie—the most obvious tell-tale sign being a bulky travel pillow, typically carried by an inexperienced flier, hanging from a backpack or being worn (wrongly) around the back of their neck before they even get on the plane. Many of us are guilty of buying one of these beanbag worms from the airport duty-free shop, only to realize that they’re more trouble than they’re actually worth.

Do a little research though—as we’ve done for you here— and you might be pleasantly surprised to find that the humble travel pillow has upped its game recently. Specialized brands like  Trtl  and  BCozzy  have entered the market, while pillows that range in shape and materials have popped up on Amazon.

So which ones are actually worth taking on a flight ? We asked our frequent flying editors to test out the most reviewed styles.

How we choose the best travel pillows

Every pillow on this list has been independently tested and reviewed by our editors. When testing, we consider quality, price, unique design features, as well as overall function and visual appeal.

Our top picks:

  • Best overall travel pillow: Cabeau Evolution S3 travel pillow
  • Best for neck support: Trtl travel pillow
  • Best for side sleepers: BCozzy neck pillow
  • Best budget buy: Dot & Dot Twist memory foam travel pillow

how travel pillows

Best travel pillow for: overall comfort

If you're looking for an upgrade to a basic does-the-job travel pillow or suffer from neck or back pain, Cabeau's Evolution S3 travel pillow is the best we've tested so far. The memory foam style has considered everything, from an adjustable toggle clasp to secure the pillow comfortably around your neck, to a handy side pocket—ideal for storing headphones or earplugs. What really sets this pillow apart from the rest are the velcro straps on the back, designed to loop around a plane seat's headrest, helping to keep your head upright and take any pressure off your neck.

Why we love it:  “The foam in this pillow is extremely comfortable, but what I love most is that the back of the pillow is flat, so you can sit right up against your seat, unlike the typical travel pillow styles which tend to be round and tilt your neck down slightly. The straps are a great idea, but if you're short it might not be possible to secure to the headrest, so keep that in mind. It also comes in a sleek cylindrical bag that, when clipped onto your carry-on , you’d never even know there was a travel pillow inside." — Sarah Allard , digital editor, Condè Nast Traveller UK

how travel pillows

Best travel pillow for: neck support

Less a pillow and more a supportive wrap for your neck, this unique design from Trtl is ideal if you're short on space and weight in your carry-on luggage—it weighs only 4.5 ounces. The pillow is designed to look like a scarf and features a clever curved U-shaped neck support stand that sits under your jaw and is then secured in place by wrapping the fabric around your neck and connecting the velcro.

Why we love it:  “I often feel like most typical travel pillows are too bulky and hard to get comfortably on, so I was keen to try this style. It's perfect for keeping your neck upright and avoiding any of the nodding that can happen while asleep. I'll admit, it feels a little strange at first to put it on, but the hypoallergenic fleece is soft and warm. It's a great option not just for plane travel, but also long road trips or train journeys.” — Sarah James , deputy digital editor, Condè Nast Traveller UK

how travel pillows

Best travel pillow for: upper body support

This clever crossbody-sling pillow offers neck and head support while allowing you to truly relax and lean to one side to fall asleep. The pillow comes with a cord at the top that can be secured in place by looping over your seat’s headrest. You can wear the pillow on either side across your body, or down one side, creating more of a barrier between you and the person next to you. The pillow is inflatable, too, so it takes up hardly any room in your luggage.

Why we love it:  “I really love the shape of this pillow, as it cradles not just your neck, but your whole upper body. Although I usually don’t like inflatable pillows, the rigidity of this style works to make you feel secure while sitting upright.” — Lauren Burvill , senior commerce editor, Condè Nast Traveller UK

Best travel pillow for: red-eye flights

More than just a neck pillow, the Pluto Pod boasts a lightly structured and padded hood, as well as a pull-down eye mask. Do you resemble a bobble-headed, 1950s-style alien when you wear it? Yes, you do. Is it, by far, one of the best travel pillows we've tested? Absolutely.

Why we love it : “The pillow has helped me cut down on my sleeping tools. With the Pod, I can eschew ear plugs and an eye mask because the padded hood dampens noise and the flip-down eye mask blocks almost all light. Sleeping with one is like being inside a mini sensory deprivation tank, except you don’t have to worry about getting wet.” — Juliet Izon , contributor

how travel pillows

Best travel pillow for: flexibility

Made of memory foam, this twist style pillow can be bent and contoured to almost any shape. Its flexibility means it can be worn in several ways, from around the neck to under your head, shoulders, or even lower back.

Why we love it:  “I often toss and turn a lot when trying to get to sleep, so I find I’m particularly wriggly when trying to get comfortable on a flight. This kind of flexible twist style of the pillow was perfect for me, as I was able to shape it to exactly where I needed it to be. I ended up settling with it half behind my neck and half under my chin, so I could lie on my side and get a couple of hours of precious sleep.” —L.B.

how travel pillows

Best travel pillow for: side sleepers

Similar to the Trtl pillow but padded with soft microfleece and covered with microsuede, BCozzy's wrap-around design offers plenty of flexibility in terms of how you wear it. The pillow comes in two sizes and when wrapped around the neck offers double the support for your head, neck, and chin. The real standout of this design is the flat back, which is not only great for maintaining a healthy posture, but also means you can fold the pillow in half and wear it on one side.

Why we love it:  “Even on a plane, I'm a side sleeper. My go-to way to snooze is angling the side headrest as far as it can go so I can rest my head in the corner. Headrests can be very hit-and-miss on planes though, so being able to fold the BCozzy pillow in half is ideal as it can prop my neck and chin up on one side without it feeling too suffocating.” —L.B.

how travel pillows

Best for: warmth

This squishy infinity-style pillow is all about the soft and breathable bamboo fabric it’s made from. Coming in one large loop, the pillow is worn by wrapping around the neck twice and adjusting and scrunching accordingly depending on the level of comfort you’re looking for.

Why we love it:  “I’d say this pillow is less about neck support and more about soft and cozy scarf–meets–pillow hybrid. It feels like a sleeping bag for your neck—ideal if you get cold easily and are looking for something that’s more snuggly rather than stiff.” —L.B.

how travel pillows

Best travel pillow for : Versatility

Slip this microbead-filled cap over your head and you’ll completely redefine the experience of sleeping on the go. From the outside, the wacky-shaped headpiece may feel a tad like a Teletubbies costume, but once you pull your head through the 27.5-inch opening, any place you find yourself in—no matter how bright or how loud—can turn into a sleep zone.

Why we love it: “And there’s no right or wrong way to use it: On a plane, use it to lean against the wall of the window seat, lie head down on the tray table of the middle seat, or tilt backward on the headrest of the seat.” — Rachel Chang , contributor

If you are a frequent traveler, investing in your own travel pillow may be worth it, especially for flights when you are in the middle or aisle. That said, shopping for a new pillow isn't always the easiest, which is why we've rounded up the best pillows for travel , including organic pillows , neck pillows and budget-friendly options, based on extensive research and our own expert testing in the Good Housekeeping Institute .

After browsing our recommendations, we suggest checking out our favorite travel gear on Amazon and consulting our guide to washing pillows , just in case you spill your coffee or juice mid-flight.

This isn't your typical travel neck pillow, as its memory foam fill holds its shape better than similar neck pillow styles.

Our pros found that the pillow really does keep your neck from tilting too far to the side. You can attach the adjustable straps to any headrest, whether it's on an airplane or in the car. We appreciate its more substantial size compared to other options on the market, although this means it's a bit bulkier.

However, it comes with a travel bag the manufacturer claims compresses the pillow down to half its size. Plus, you can attach the bag to your suitcase so you can save room for souvenirs. Although this is our top-rated pick for a travel neck pillow, it isn't the most versatile.

Fill material: Memory foam | Machine washable cover: Yes | Features: Adjustable straps; travel bag

For a less expensive option also by popular brand Cabeau, try its Evolution Classic for under $30. Similar to the S3, this model has a memory foam fill — but doesn't have straps for attaching it to a headrest.

Adjustable front clasps, however, lend support to the head and neck. You'll appreciate the machine washable cover for quick cleaning, and a hidden storage compartment for earbuds or earplugs . The pillow has a 4.3-star rating on Amazon and over 1.9k online customer reviews praising how comfortable it is. Some comment they have bought it for other frequent travelers in their lives.

A few reviews note that the pillow can be too big depending on how tall you are. Still, for the price and support provided, it's a winner.

Fill materials: Memory foam, polyester, cotton | Machine washable cover: Yes | Features: Adjustable front clasps; hidden storage compartment

You may be surprised to learn that a toddler-sized pillow is typically the same size as a travel one. We tested Avocado's Toddler Pillow which is the same as their travel pillow. Avocado uses organic and high quality materials, which is one reason we love the brand and have included its Green Mattress in a roundup of the best organic mattresses .

Like its popular mattress, Avocado's travel pillow is GOTS certified organic . It's also made with latex rather than memory foam, a synthetic material often used in travel pillows. Latex is made from natural resources and tends to be more resilient than foam. The fill is a blend of latex and kapok fiber, a natural material that has a silky feel.

Bedding expert Lexie Sachs , the executive director of the Good Housekeeping Institute Textiles Lab, says this pillow is indeed super comfy, and an almost perfect five-star rating online suggests customers agree. Numerous reviews note the high quality; one customer writes, "this pillow is really nice, soft, comfortable and the perfect size for using as an extra pillow for legs or whatever is needed."

Fill material: Latex, kapok fiber | Machine washable cover: Yes | Features: GOTS certified organic material

The design of this travel pillow may give infinity scarf vibes, but its unique design is meant for neck support. Available in four colors and weighing the same as an apple , according to the brand, this pillow is made from soft fleece and has an internal support system that helps keep your head and neck in an upright position.

We appreciate how lightweight it is, as you can easily pack it in your carry-on luggage . To wash, simply remove the support system and toss the wrap in the wash — no need to remove the cover first like some u-shaped travel pillows.

It has over 32K Amazon reviews, including one customer writing they used it on a recent 22-hour flight and were able to fall asleep for the first time sitting up. They add that while the fleece material keeps you warm in oftentimes cold flights, it may be too warm for those who run hot.

Fill material: N/A | Machine washable: Yes | Features: Soft fleece material

What sets this pillow apart from others is its light-blocking capability that proved to be effective in our testing . Its design may look kind of silly at a first glance, but the full-head structure with a mouth opening is meant to reduce ambient light and sound while letting you breath easy.

There are openings for your hands to rest on top of your head when leaning over. The pillow creates a cozy cocoon you can escape to whether you are at the office or on the plane in a middle seat. A caveat is the manufacturer recommends you spot clean the pillow with mild soap and water and then dry thoroughly, rather than tossing it in the washer and dryer.

It definitely has a strange design, but hundreds of online reviews say it does what it is meant to do. One happy reviewer writes, "I love pillows, and this does fall into that category. Although it's a bit awkward, it is very soft. For long car rides it would be a very good choice."

Fill material: Microbeads | Machine washable: No | Features: Blocks light; openings for hands

A GH Family Travel Awards winner in 2023, our testers raved about this pick, and even continued using the pillow after their travels.

It's substantial in size while still being compact enough to take on a trip, and comes with its own storage bag and pillowcase. The fill is a memory foam blend that is not only comfortable but also helps the pillow keep its shape.

Its curved shape maintains proper alignment while you snooze. It does come at a higher price but Sachs says that she uses her pillow at home too, not just while traveling, meaning the splurge may be worth it if you travel often for work and find hotel pillows to be uncomfortable.

Fill material: Memory foam blend | Machine washable cover: Yes| Features: Storage bag and pillowcase; curved shape

If you have one or more little ones traveling with you, then you may be looking for a kid-friendly travel pillow to help them nap better on long car rides or flights.

This popular pillow by Bcozzy has a 4.5-star rating on Amazon and is available in five colors with adorable travel bags in the shape of animals. You can adjust the pillow using the velcro strips that attach to the overlapping arms, which combined with a flat back help keep your kid's head from falling forward.

Sachs owns these cute pillows for her kids and confirms they stay in place well and roll up nice and easy to fit inside the carrying kit. "We used them on a long road trip and bring them whenever we have a long car ride. They love them!" she notes. You can also machine wash this pillow, which is great for any spills in the car. The drawback? It's pricier than some of our travel pillow picks for adults.

Fill material: Polyester | Machine washable: Yes | Features: Animal-themed travel bag; adjustable Velcro arms

Tuft & Needle Anywhere Travel Pillow

Limited on space? Try this travel pillow by popular bedding brand Tuft & Needle. We've included the brand's Original Mattress in our roundup of best mattresses and GH editors who have brought this pillow on long-haul flights say it's a game changer.

It's made from the brand's adaptive foam, which is designed to be breathable. It comes with a pack you can stuff the pillow into — making the pillow even more compact. Its versatile shape lends itself to a variety of uses including long trips or even camping. There is also a metal carabiner for attaching it to your bag or suitcase.

Sachs adds that this pillow is a solid choice for adding some cushion between your neck and shoulder when snoozing or even using it as something to lean on up against a car window.

Fill material: Foam | Machine washable cover: Yes | Features: Stuff sack and carabiner; breathable

When you think of travel pillows, something like this classic U-shaped pillow may come to mind. This popular pick has over 27K Amazon reviews, with one customer saying they bought the pillow for a long flight but found it also helped with their sleeping at home: "My neck is supported and my head is propped in just the right position to sleep comfortably."

The pillow has a multi-purpose design for all sleeping positions. You can position the arms of the pillow to support your head whether it tends to fall forward or sideways. The soft fleece material makes it cozy to snuggle with and the pillow comes with a travel case for easy storage.

Fill material: Polyester | Machine washable cover: Yes | Features: Front and side positions; soft fleece material

J-Pillow's travel pillow features an innovative, patented three-way design that supports your head, neck and chin. You tuck the "trunk" of the pillow under your chin and then lean back into the pillow for a restful sleep. Even if you're buying it for a long flight, you can continue using it while relaxing on your sofa at home to lend support to your head and neck as you nap or read.

It also comes with a travel bag for easy transport and has a snap loop so you can hang it on a hook when not in use. You can pop this pillow into the washer and dryer for easy cleaning post-traveling.

One five-star reviewer says, "I love this travel pillow; it's very soft and very good for sitting next to window side of the airplane." Its unique design and setup does require some getting used to though.

Fill material: Foam | Machine washable: Yes | Features: Three-way design; snap loop

How we chose the best travel pillows

line break

In the Good Housekeeping Institute, our textiles experts test every kind of pillow, from the best cooling , down alternative , latex and buckwheat pillows to the best pillows for side sleepers and back sleepers . We also test useful travel gear and accessories from luggage brands to packing cubes .

When looking at travel pillows, we consider comfort and support, as well as ease of use from carrying to cleaning. We also consider durability and performance of materials, as well as packability and price. For this roundup we relied on tester and expert feedback as well as insights from online customer reviews and ratings.

What to look for when shopping for travel pillows

line break

If you are looking for a travel pillow for your next trip, here are some things to consider:

✔️ Shape: U-shaped neck pillows are great for airplanes as they can stay put while you're sitting up in a middle or aisle seat. Small rectangle pillows are good for car rides as you can lean them against a window. You can also use a rectangular travel pillow at your final destination, whether that's a hotel room or camp site, and even at home after your trip. There are also unique shapes, like the Ostrich travel pillow that covers your eyes, or super compact pillows. Note: Travel-size pillows are the same as toddler-size pillows.

✔️ Fill: Foam keeps its shape under pressure, which is why it's a popular material for neck travel pillows. Other travel pillows will have a fiberfill or blend that makes them feel more similar to a regular pillow.

✔️ Portability: Almost all of our picks come with a travel case for easy packing. Sometimes the carrying bag will even compress the pillow down to a smaller size so you'll have more room in your suitcase. A bag will also protect the pillow and keep it clean when not in use. Other pillows will be super lightweight or have a clip.

✔️ Cleaning: Some pillows on this list are entirely machine washable, meaning you can toss the whole pillow in your washing machine . Others have machine washable covers or require you to remove a part of the pillow before washing. However, some can only be spot-cleaned. Since you are bringing your pillow on-the-go and it will be exposed to different germs, it's important to keep it clean.

✔️ Price: Our testing and research suggests you can find a great travel pillow for around $50, with some less expensive options that are just as good. There are also splurge-worthy travel pillows that can ring in at over $100.

Are travel pillows worth it?

Yes , especially if you are an avid traveler or find it hard to get comfortable on the plane. While there are some more expensive pillows on the market, there are also budget-friendly options that can improve your travel experience.

Even though airline pillows are free, they are not always the most comfortable. Plus, if you take the train to work or often go on road trips with the family (where pillows aren't handed out), buying a travel pillow will quickly pay off.

How to Wear a Travel Pillow (The Right Way) - SNUGL.co

How to Wear a Travel Pillow (The Right Way)

Stop! You’re doing it all wrong.

Travel pillows are an essential packing item for long-haul flights and weary travellers.

Sadly, most people aren’t using them the right way to maximise comfort. But we’re on a mission to fix that and answer the question of how to wear a travel pillow.

Today, we’ve got insights from a fellow traveller plus a doctor’s recommendations on how to get the perfect rest using your travel pillow.

The Right Way to Wear a Travel Pillow

Using a travel pillow correctly is the first step to getting comfortable with it. Unfortunately, ever since these specially-designed pillows became a traveller’s favourite, we’ve all been using them wrong.

Apart from SNUGL customers, of course. The insert card included in our box has been showing the right way to use them since we launched in the late 2010’s.

In 2021, TikToker @sidneyraz uploaded a clip showing the simple solution to making travel pillows more comfortable - turn the snap enclosure side to the back instead of the front.

Yup, that’s right. That bit goes at the back.

@sidneyraz you can actually sleep on a flight #traveltipsandtricks #inmy30s ♬ original sound - sidneyraz

The viral video now has over 36M views, most of which are travellers shocked to realise the truth of how to wear travel pillows.

Since the TikTok video, several other trends and news stories have appeared online showing the right way to use a travel pillow.

Better late than never for an invention created in the early 1920’s.

But you can also wear your travel pillow in other positions. While the front is often the most correct, there are some situations where "backwards" might even be best.

So, to save you hours of shifting in your seat or having your head nod, here are a few things to know.

The Conventional Position

how to wear a travel pillow conventional position

The conventional position involves placing the neck pillow behind your neck, with the bulk of the pillow supporting the cervical spine (that's your neck).

This position allows for neutral neck alignment, which can benefit you if you've got a normal cervical spine alignment and no specific neck issues. Here are the benefits and drawbacks of the conventional position.

  • Provides support and helps maintain a neutral alignment of the cervical spine.
  • Can help alleviate muscle tension and strain in the neck and upper back.
  • Suitable for most people without any specific neck conditions.
  • May not provide adequate support if you have certain neck conditions, such as herniated discs or cervical radiculopathy.
  • May not be the most effective position if you experience snoring or sleep apnea.

Reversed Position

how to wear a travel pillow reversed position

The reversed position involves wearing the neck pillow with the bulk of the pillow in the front, supporting the chin and lower jaw.

People who snore or have trouble breathing during sleep typically use this position. Here are the benefits and drawbacks of the reversed position:

  • Can help prevent the chin from dropping during sleep, which may improve airway patency and reduce snoring.
  • Provides support to the lower jaw, which may be beneficial for individuals with temporomandibular joint (TMJ), meaning they clench their jaw a lot when they sleep.
  • May not provide adequate support for the cervical spine, potentially leading to misalignment and strain in the neck if you're injured or have a weak neck.
  • Not suitable for people with pre-existing neck conditions or those who require specific neck support.
  • Could be uncomfortable if you have breathing or snoring issues.

Over The Shoulder Position

how to wear a travel pillow over shoulder position

The over-the-shoulder position involves wearing the neck pillow over one shoulder, supporting the side of the neck.

This position makes sense while sitting upright if you've got a tendency to lean to the side and sit in middle or aisle seats. Here are the benefits and drawbacks of the over-the-shoulder position.

  • Provides support to the side of the neck, which can help maintain alignment and reduce strain.
  • Great if you prefer sleeping in a partially upright or lateral position, such as during travel.
  • May not provide adequate support for the entire cervical spine, so be careful if you have upper back problems .
  • Not the ideal position if you've got certain neck conditions, such as herniated discs or cervical spondylosis.

Front Position

how to wear a travel pillow front position

Finally we get to the real way of how to wear your travel pillow , the front position.

This position involves wearing the neck pillow around the front of your neck, similar to a scarf. It's great for gentle support and warmth around your neck area.

If you have a specific neck condition or need significant support for your neck for some reason, one of the above positions may be better. But this one is great for most people.

  • The front position offers a gentle, wrapping support around the neck area, similar to a scarf.
  • This can provide a subtle sense of comfort and warmth to help you feel cozy on your journey.
  • It may also help you unwind and alleviate stress during relaxation or sleep.

Compared to other positions, the front position may provide less substantial support for the neck. It may not adequately address specific neck conditions or provide the same level of alignment as other positions.

If you require significant support or have neck pain or injuries, other positions, such as the conventional or reverse positions, are generally more recommended.

The conventional position is generally recommended if you don't have any specific neck issues.

If you do, consult with your healthcare professional for personalised advice based on wearing a travel pillow your unique circumstances.

Tips For Sleeping On A Plane

For most people, wearing a travel pillow the correct way is all about getting good sleep on a plane .

Lack of space, uncomfortable seating, noise, and disruptions can all make it difficult to rest on a plane.

But, with the right tactics, you can improve your chances of getting some shut-eye during your flight. Here are five tips for sleeping on a plane.

  • Opt for a window seat:  If sleep is your primary concern, window seats offer a surface to lean against for support and reduce disturbance from fellow passengers. Avoid seats near high-traffic areas, such as lavatories and galleys, to minimise noise and disturbance.
  • Wear comfortable clothing: Dress in loose, breathable clothing made from soft fabrics that allow for easy movement. Avoid tight-fitting clothes and opt for layers to adjust to the changing cabin temperature. Wearing comfortable socks or slippers can also keep your feet cozy and help promote relaxation.
  • Create a sleep-friendly environment: Utilize eye masks, noise-canceling headphones, and earplugs to block out light and minimize noise disturbances. Bringing a neck pillow or inflatable pillow can provide neck and head support, enhancing your comfort level. Additionally, consider using a travel blanket or shawl to keep warm during the flight.
  • Establish a sleep routine: Try to replicate your pre-sleep routine from home to signal your body that it's time to rest. This might include brushing your teeth, or listening to soothing music or a guided meditation. Creating a familiar environment can help cue your body to relax and prepare for sleep.
  • Adjust your body position: Experiment with different seating positions to find what works best for you. Recline your seat slightly, but be mindful of the comfort of the passenger behind you. Use blankets or a lumbar cushion to support your lower back , neck, and head, promoting proper spinal alignment. Additionally, elevating your feet slightly can improve circulation and reduce swelling.

Remember, sleeping on a plane may not provide the same quality of rest as your bed at home, but these tips can enhance your chances of getting some sleep during your journey.

It's also essential to stay hydrated, avoid excessive caffeine or alcohol consumption, and engage in light stretching or in-flight exercises to improve circulation.

If You're Travelling With Back Pain

Travelling with back pain can be a challenging ordeal, but with proper preparation and consideration, it can be made more bearable.

For air travel, maintaining good posture is crucial; sitting straight with feet flat and back against the seat can minimise lower back strain. Here are a few more tips:

  • Hydration is essential as it helps alleviate muscle tension and discomfort.
  • It is also advisable to carry a lumbar pillow for additional spinal support.
  • If you've got sciatica, opting for an aisle seat, using heat or cold therapy, and performing gentle stretches can help reduce discomfort.
  • In the case of a herniated disc, requesting special seating with extra legroom and bringing along necessary medications can alleviate pain.

Make Your Travel Pillow Work For You

The trick to using a travel pillow is placing your head in the most comfortable position to sleep upright. And that may need some experimentation

The SNUGL travel pillow uses memory foam for support and softness. In addition, the snap enclosure gives your head 360-degree padding to support it in any position. The raised edges boost comfort on your preferred sleeping side.

By keeping these features in mind, try out the different positions above to see what works best for you.

When designing the SNUGL pillow, we knew that the most basic travel pillows on the market are far too soft and usually don’t give your head proper support for sleeping on a flight. So, as much as we're biased, having the right pillow does make a difference.

Travel pillows lacking support simply cannot hold your head upright, leading to bad posture, inability to sleep, and aches when you wake up.

Some models are a true U-shape but don't have a snap enclosure. These pillows make it hard to use the preferred pillow position.

Other Considerations for Wearing Your Travel Pillow

If you're still here, you've probably got a preexisting neck or back problem and want more info on getting your journey right.

That, or you're as sick of poor sleep on long journeys as we were when designing our pillow. Either way, here are a few more things to consider.

Proper Posture

Good posture is just as important on a journey as it is when seated at a desk. If you can maintain a straight back, you'll be more comfortable, especially if you've got back problems.

Let your feet rest on the floor, shoulder-width apart. It can be convenient to keep luggage under the seat in front, but this can also interfere with your back alignment.

Many of the tips in my article on maintaining proper desk posture are relevant for traveling comfortably, too.

Seat Choice

Window seats let you use pillows with less support because you can lean them on the window. Even then, you can wake up with pains, so a plane hull isn’t an ideal replacement for a supportive pillow.

If you have a middle or aisle seat, you’ll notice the difference in support of SNUGL’s pillow that helps keep your head in place during the flight.

Some airline cabins offer more comfort for travellers with upgraded seats. Using a travel pillow can change based on whether you have a reclining or lie-flat seat or even one with an adjustable headrest.

Adjustable headrests add another layer of cushion to the back of your head, so be sure to adjust your position accordingly

The Bottom Line: A Doctor's Advice

The joy of travel is in the journey as much as it is in the destination. The more comfortable your trip, the happier you'll arrive.

Travel pillows are an easy-to-carry solution to making any journey more enjoyable. Upgrading plane tickets can be expensive, but this is one upgrade that's well worth the price.

Choosing the Right Travel Pillow for Your Needs

To find the perfect travel pillow for you, imagine sinking into a cloud of plush comfort as you relax on your next long journey.

When it comes to how to wear a travel pillow , there are a few factors to consider. First, think about the type of neck pillow that suits your needs best. Travel pillows come in various shapes and sizes, but the most popular ones are u-shaped neck pillows and memory foam options.

U-shaped pillows provide support for your head and neck while keeping them in a comfortable sleeping position. Memory foam pillows contour to your body shape and help relieve any potential neck pain. Whichever option you choose, make sure it provides adequate support for your specific needs so that you can enjoy ultimate comfort during your travels.

Adjusting the Travel Pillow for Optimal Support

Get ready to experience the feeling of floating on a cloud as you adjust your go-to travel companion to provide personalized support that’ll have you drifting off into dreamland in no time.

When it comes to wearing a travel pillow , it’s all about finding the right adjustments for optimal comfort. If your head falls forward while sleeping, try adjusting the pillow so it supports your neck and keeps your head upright.

Some travel pillows come with a removable cover, allowing you to wash it after each use for hygiene purposes. The u-shaped design is perfect for switching shoulders and finding a comfortable position. And if you tend to lean forward while sleeping, adjust the pillow accordingly to keep your head in a comfortable position throughout your journey.

Experiment with different positions until you find what works best for you, and get ready for the most comfortable travels ever!

Positioning the Travel Pillow for Maximum Comfort

Finding the perfect angle and placement for your travel pillow is essential in ensuring an unparalleled level of coziness and relaxation during your journey.

To achieve maximum comfort, start by positioning the pillow behind your neck, ensuring it rests comfortably against the base of your skull. Adjust the pillow’s height by either inflating or deflating it to provide optimal support for your head and neck.

Next, lean back slightly into your seat, allowing the pillow to cradle your head while maintaining a natural alignment with your spine. Make sure you’re wearing comfortable clothing that won’t restrict movement or cause discomfort.

Finally, take a moment to rest and allow your body to fully relax into the softness of the pillow. By following these expert tips, you’ll experience ultimate comfort throughout your travels.

Using the Travel Pillow for Different Modes of Travel

Lean back in your seat on the plane, allowing the travel pillow to become a soft cloud that supports and cradles your head throughout the journey.

Neck pillows are good for more than just sleeping positions; they can provide comfort during long haul flights or any other mode of travel .

When choosing a travel pillow, consider its size and shape. Some are specifically designed for carry-on convenience, while others offer extra support for long trips.

The travel industry has recognized the importance of neck pillows and now offers a wide range of options to suit different preferences.

As a travel writer, I’ve tested various neck pillows and found that inflatable ones are particularly helpful. They allow you to adjust the firmness according to your liking and can be easily deflated when not in use.

So next time you’re on a flight, make sure you bring along a comfortable travel pillow for ultimate relaxation throughout your journey.

Maintaining Hygiene and Cleanliness of Your Travel Pillow

To ensure your travel pillow remains fresh and germ-free, remember to regularly wash its removable cover, using warm water and gentle detergent. This simple step will help maintain the hygiene and cleanliness of your travel pillow, allowing you to have a comfortable and worry-free journey.

In addition to washing the cover, it’s also important to keep your overall travel environment clean. If you’re seated in an aisle seat, make sure to wipe down the armrests, tray table, and seatbelt with a disinfecting wipe.

To further enhance your comfort levels during travel, consider bringing along other essentials such as eye masks and a neck pillow. Staying hydrated is also crucial for a pleasant journey – drink plenty of water before and during the flight or car ride.

With these tips in mind, you’ll be able to sleep in the most comfortable position possible while keeping your personal items clean and germ-free.

Storing and Packing Your Travel Pillow Efficiently

When it’s time to pack for your trip, imagine the convenience of effortlessly tucking your travel pillow into a compact and organized space in your luggage.

Storing and packing your travel pillow efficiently can make a world of difference during your journey. To start, fold the pillow in half and secure it with the built-in straps or any additional straps it may have. This will prevent it from unfolding and taking up unnecessary space in your suitcase.

If you’re short on space, consider using a compression bag to further reduce its size. Alternatively, you can attach it to the outside of your bag using carabiner clips or straps. Just make sure not to place it where it could get caught or damaged by moving parts, such as wheels or handles.

By utilizing these packing techniques, you can ensure that your travel pillow takes up minimal space while still providing maximum comfort during your trip.

Enhancing Your Comfort with Additional Accessories

Immerse yourself in a world of luxurious relaxation by embracing the blissful indulgence of additional accessories that elevate your comfort to new heights.

When it comes to enhancing your comfort with a travel pillow, there are several additional accessories that can make a significant difference. One popular accessory is a neck wrap or scarf that provides extra support and warmth for your neck during long journeys.

Another option is an eye mask , which not only blocks out light but also adds an extra layer of comfort to help you relax and fall asleep faster.

Additionally, consider using earplugs or noise-canceling headphones to eliminate any distractions and create a peaceful environment. These small additions can greatly enhance your overall experience with the travel pillow, ensuring ultimate comfort throughout your journey.

Exploring Different Types of Travel Pillows

Discover the various types of travel pillows that offer a range of designs and features, ensuring a comfortable journey. When it comes to finding the perfect travel pillow for your neck, there are plenty of options to choose from. Here are some different types you can explore:

  • Memory Foam Travel Pillows: These pillows contour to the shape of your neck, providing excellent support and comfort.
  • Inflatable Travel Pillows: Perfect for saving space in your luggage, these pillows can be easily inflated and deflated whenever needed.
  • Neck Roll Pillows: Designed specifically to support your neck, these cylindrical-shaped pillows provide targeted comfort.
  • Wraparound Travel Pillows: With a unique wraparound design, these pillows offer 360-degree support for your entire neck.
  • Hooded Travel Pillows: Not only do these pillows provide cushioning for your neck, but they also come with an attached hood for added privacy and warmth.

With so many different types of travel pillows available, you can find the one that suits your needs and preferences for ultimate comfort during your journeys.

Overcoming Common Travel Pillow Challenges

To get the most out of your travel pillow, you’ll need to overcome a few common challenges that can affect your comfort on the go. Did you know that 65% of travelers struggle with finding the right position for their neck while using a travel pillow?

It’s important to use a travel pillow correctly to ensure maximum support and relaxation during your trip. Start by placing the pillow around your neck, making sure it rests comfortably against your shoulders. Adjust the tightness according to your preference, ensuring it’s snug but not constricting.

For those who tend to fall forward while sleeping, try placing the travel pillow under your chin instead of behind your neck. This will help keep your head in an upright position and prevent any discomfort or strain.

How to Wear a Travel Pillow

Step-by-Step Guide on How to Wear a Travel Pillow

Now that you’re familiar with the types of travel pillows, let’s explore how to wear them correctly for a comfortable journey:

Step 1: Choose the Right Pillow

Selecting the right travel pillow is crucial for comfort. Consider factors like your sleeping style, the type of transportation you’ll be using, and your personal preferences. If you’re a side sleeper, opt for a pillow that provides adequate side support.

Step 2: Adjust the Pillow

Regardless of the type of travel pillow you choose, it’s essential to adjust it to your liking. Ensure it’s neither too tight nor too loose around your neck. You want it snug enough to provide support but not so tight that it restricts circulation.

Step 3: Find the Right Position

The position you sit in while wearing your travel pillow matters. If you’re on a plane, recline your seat slightly to take advantage of the headrest. If you’re in a car, use the headrest of your seat as a base for your pillow. Experiment with angles until you find the most comfortable position.

Step 4: Consider Additional Support

Sometimes, wearing just a neck pillow may not be enough. You can enhance your comfort by adding extra support. Place a small pillow or rolled-up sweater behind your lower back for lumbar support. This can help alleviate back pain during long journeys.

Step 5: Relax and Enjoy

Now that you’ve adjusted your travel pillow and found the perfect position, it’s time to relax and enjoy your journey. Lean back, close your eyes, and let the pillow do its magic. Remember to take short breaks to stretch your legs and improve circulation.

Tips for Maximum Comfort

To make the most of your travel pillow, consider these additional tips:

  • Pack Strategically : Place your travel pillow at the top of your carry-on bag for easy access during your journey.
  • Stay Hydrated : Proper hydration can prevent muscle stiffness, so be sure to drink water throughout your trip.
  • Choose the Right Seat : If possible, select a seat with more legroom or recline options for added comfort.
  • Use a Blanket : A lightweight blanket can provide extra warmth and comfort, especially on long flights.
  • Earplugs and Eye Mask : Block out noise and light to create a more relaxing environment for sleep.
  • Practice Good Posture : Maintain good posture while sitting to reduce strain on your neck and back.
  • Take Short Walks : On longer journeys, make it a habit to get up and walk around periodically to prevent stiffness.

Wearing a travel pillow properly can transform your journey from uncomfortable to restful. Whether you prefer inflatable, memory foam, wrap-around, or hooded travel pillows, the key is to choose the right one and adjust it to your liking. Remember to consider additional support and follow the tips mentioned here for maximum comfort. With the right travel pillow and a little know-how, you can arrive at your destination feeling refreshed and ready to explore. Safe travels!

Frequently Asked Questions

Experts agree a supportive pillow is essential for travel. "The biggest issue many travelers experience when sleeping on a plane is that the seats don't recline enough," explains Dr. Alex Dimitriu, a sleep/wake and performance specialist who is dual board certified in psychiatry and sleep medicine. "This often results in the head being just on the brink of tipping forward – which is not a comfortable sleeping position. Because of this insufficient recline, it is important to keep padding behind the head and neck minimal to reduce the tendency for the head to tip forward."

Most travel pillows are designed to be worn around the neck, providing enough support to prevent the head from tipping forward.

When shopping for a neck pillow for travel, experts recommend considering the following factors:

Proper head support:  What's most important is ensuring your head is supported in the right places by your travel pillow – and, in particular, not being pushed forward by excessive padding. "A good pillow would provide support for side sleeping, rather than a lot of padding behind the head, which just pushes the head forward too much," says Dimitriu.

Material: Consider both the external and internal material of the pillow:

External: Chiropractic physician Eric Smith advises to make sure the material of your travel pillow is breathable and won't subject you to an overheated sleep, since one of the main reasons for moving around a lot as you sleep is getting too hot. "When your face gets too hot on one side, even if you're sleeping, you're going to move from it because it's too warm," Smith explains.

There's no real consensus on which material is best for a cool, comfy sleep – and different people will have different preferences – so Smith's advice is to try before you fly (and don't hesitate to request a refund if your chosen pillow isn't working out).

  • Internal: Memory foam pillows tend to offer more firm support – something Smith recommends for anyone, but especially older travelers. "The majority of patients I have that get older, we actually need a more firm pillow, we need a more firm bed, we need more support," Smith says. Pillows filled with microbeads mold more to the neck and head, while inflatable pillows can be adjusted to your preferences based on how much air you use to blow them up.

A travel pillow for your neck isn't considered a carry-on or personal item (and the same generally goes for small, loose items like jackets and umbrellas). That said, it's always best to review your airline's carry-on luggage size restrictions before traveling.

A good neck pillow for travel isn't the only key to achieving a decent sleep while in transit. "From the standpoint of evolution, we're kind of hardwired to be a little bit more on high alert in those situations," explains Rebecca Robbins, an instructor in medicine at Harvard Medical School and scientist at Boston's Brigham and Women's Hospital. "We're a little bit more in fight or flight mode; our brain is subconsciously scanning the environment for threats and there are new sounds and new smells."

She recommends finding elements that are relaxing to you, which might include some of the following:

  • Travel blanket: Look for something lightweight, such as the EverSnug Travel Blanket on Amazon. This blanket comes with a carrying case, which can double as a pillow when the blanket is stored inside.
  • Essential or aromatherapy oils: Scents like lavender and peppermint can be especially calming.
  • Earplugs: Choose headphones that block some or all external noise. The Bose QuietComfort 45 Wireless Headphones are especially well rated.
  • White noise app: There are a variety of free apps, or you can try a paid option like Calm (which offers a free trial).
  • Eye mask: An eye mask like this cotton option on Amazon helps to block out the bright light on planes.

The correct way to wear a neck pillow

Editor's Note

I'll never forget my first neck pillow . After a long-haul flight proved to be a pain in the neck, I was willing to throw money at any possible solution in the airport gift shop.

Pillow purchased, I settled into my return flight with a sense of hope, and after dinner and a movie I drifted off to sleep with my neck pillow in place. But rather than slumber peacefully as the photo on the label suggested, I was jerked awake when my chin fell forward.

After deciding U-shaped travel pillows were a waste of space in my carry-on, I gave the pillow away. Then, more than 10 years later, I discovered it wasn't the pillow, it was me. I'd been using it the wrong way around.

While almost everyone you see on a plane wears the pillow around the back of their neck with the gap at the front, it works a whole lot better if you flip it and reverse it — as demonstrated in this viral Tik Tok video . With the gap at the back, your head is supported, eliminating the strain on your neck if it falls from side to side, chin securely in place.

https://www.tiktok.com/@sidneyraz/video/6982254638443531525?referer_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.intheknow.com%2Fpost%2Fneck-pillow-for-travel-airplanes-forward%2F&referer_video_id=6982254638443531525&refer=embed&is_copy_url=0&is_from_webapp=v1&sender_device=pc&sender_web_id=6891278716250801670

I'll admit to feeling like a fool when I decided to give a second travel pillow a chance and wear it 'backward'. I could see other neck pillow users looking at me in confusion, but I simply smiled, popped in my earplugs, pulled on my eye mask and settled down to sleep.

And sleep I did. The few times I woke through the night flight due to turbulence I felt a sense of comfort from the pillow's position and fell back to sleep easily in a U-shaped hug. By the time we landed, I was such a convert I wanted to tell everyone carrying a travel pillow off the plane that they had to try it the other way around.

Granted, there are some times when you don't want to wear it under your chin. The reverse position doesn't work well at mealtimes or when you're having something to drink . And, until I find one with an Elizabethan ruff design that takes the whole look to a so-silly-it-works level, I'll continue using my neck pillow as lumbar support while watching movies.

Then, when it's time for shut-eye I'll look like the person who has the wrong end of the stick but is sleeping soundly. Until word gets out and more of us use the humble U-shaped pillow in the way it can do its best work. I've yet to see anyone else on a plane wearing it that way, but look forward to the day we can nod at each other.

One final thing: When it comes to the right way to wear them around your neck when you're walking around the airport, let's agree that forwards, backward and sideways are all off the table. Loop them around the handles of your bag and avoid turning heads for the wrong reason. Until my ruff design comes out, that is. Then it will look awesome.

How to Wear a Travel Pillow: Tips and Tricks for Comfortable Travel

Table of Contents

As someone who travels frequently, I know how important it is to have a comfortable travel pillow. However, it’s not just about having the right pillow – it’s also about wearing it correctly. After all, if you’re not using your travel pillow properly, you’re not going to get the support and comfort you need to sleep well on a long flight or road trip.

So, how do you wear a travel pillow correctly? There are a few key things to keep in mind. First, you need to make sure the pillow is positioned properly around your neck. Second, you need to consider your seating position and adjust the pillow accordingly. And finally, you need to be aware of some common mistakes people make when wearing travel pillows, so you can avoid them and get the most out of your pillow.

Choosing the Right Travel Pillow

As someone who has traveled extensively, I can attest to the importance of choosing the right travel pillow. A good travel pillow can make all the difference in getting a good night’s sleep on a long flight or road trip. Here are some tips to help you choose the right travel pillow:

  • Consider the shape: There are several shapes of travel pillows available, including U-shaped, J-shaped, and rectangular. U-shaped pillows are the most popular and provide support for the neck. J-shaped pillows offer support for the chin as well. Rectangular pillows are versatile and can be used for the neck, back, or legs. Choose a shape that suits your sleeping style.
  • Check the material: Travel pillows are made from various materials, including memory foam, microbeads, and inflatable materials. Memory foam pillows offer the best support, while microbead pillows are more flexible and can be molded into different shapes. Inflatable pillows are lightweight and easy to pack, but may not offer as much support as other materials.
  • Consider the size: Travel pillows come in different sizes, so choose one that fits your body type. A pillow that is too big or too small will not provide adequate support.
  • Look for additional features: Some travel pillows come with additional features, such as a built-in hood or earplugs. Consider these features if you are a light sleeper or need extra protection from noise and light.

By considering these factors, you can choose a travel pillow that will provide the support and comfort you need for a good night’s sleep on the go.

How to Wear a Travel Pillow

Around the neck.

When it comes to wearing a travel pillow, the most common way is to put it around your neck. Here’s how:

  • Place the pillow around your neck, making sure it is centered and the thickest part is at the back of your neck.
  • Adjust the pillow so it feels comfortable and supportive. You can move it up or down your neck to find the right spot.
  • If you’re sitting upright, you can lean back and rest your head on the pillow. If you’re reclining, you can turn the pillow around so it supports the back of your head.

Remember, the goal is to keep your neck and head in a comfortable, neutral position. If the pillow is too high or too low, it can strain your neck and cause discomfort.

Across the Body

If you’re looking for a different way to wear your travel pillow, you can try wearing it across your body. Here’s how:

  • Loop the pillow around your neck as usual.
  • Take one end of the pillow and cross it over your chest, so the pillow rests on your opposite shoulder.
  • Take the other end of the pillow and cross it over your back, so the pillow rests on your other shoulder.
  • Adjust the pillow so it feels comfortable and supportive. You can move it up or down your body to find the right spot.

This method can be helpful if you’re trying to sleep while sitting upright, or if you’re in a cramped space and need to conserve room. However, it may not be as comfortable as wearing the pillow around your neck, so try both methods and see which one works best for you.

Adjusting the Pillow for Comfort

Once you have chosen the right type of travel pillow and secured it around your neck, it’s time to adjust it for maximum comfort. Here are a few tips:

  • Make sure the pillow isn’t too tight or too loose around your neck. You want it to be snug enough to support your head and neck, but not so tight that it’s uncomfortable.
  • Position the pillow so that it is supporting your head and neck in alignment with your spine. This will help prevent neck pain and discomfort.
  • If you’re using an adjustable pillow, experiment with different levels of inflation or deflation until you find the perfect level of firmness for your needs.
  • If you’re using a U-shaped pillow, make sure the opening is at the front of your neck rather than the back. This will help prevent your head from falling forward while you sleep.
  • If you’re using a horseshoe pillow, orient the pillow so that the horseshoe-shaped indentation is in the center of your neck. Then, adjust the pillow as needed to find the most comfortable position.

Remember, everyone’s body is different, so what works for one person may not work for another. Don’t be afraid to experiment with different types of travel pillows and different levels of inflation or deflation until you find the perfect fit for your needs.

Tips for Using a Travel Pillow

As someone who has used many travel pillows over the years, I have found a few tips that have made a big difference in my comfort and ability to sleep while traveling. Here are some tips for using a travel pillow:

Using with a Hoodie

If you are traveling in colder weather or on a plane with strong air conditioning, wearing a hoodie can be a great way to stay warm and cozy. However, it can be a bit tricky to wear a travel pillow with a hoodie. One solution is to put the hood up over the pillow, which can help keep the pillow in place and provide extra padding and warmth for your head.

Another option is to adjust the pillow so that it sits on top of the hood, which can provide extra support for your neck without interfering with the hood.

Using with Earplugs

If you are a light sleeper or traveling on a noisy plane or train, earplugs can be a great way to block out unwanted noise and help you sleep more soundly. However, wearing earplugs with a travel pillow can be a bit uncomfortable, as the pillow can push the earplugs deeper into your ears.

To avoid this, try adjusting the pillow so that it sits slightly lower on your neck, or use a smaller travel pillow that won’t interfere with your ears. You can also try using noise-cancelling headphones instead of earplugs, which can provide extra comfort and block out noise more effectively.

Overall, using a travel pillow can be a great way to stay comfortable and sleep better while traveling. By following these tips and experimenting with different pillow styles and positions, you can find the perfect pillow and sleeping setup for your next trip.

In conclusion, wearing a travel pillow correctly is essential for a comfortable and restful journey. The key to wearing a travel pillow correctly is to ensure that it is secured around your neck and adjusted for maximum comfort. Remember, the pillow should not be too tight or too loose.

Another important factor to consider is the type of clothing you wear when using a travel pillow. Loose, comfortable clothing is recommended to avoid too much pressure or compression on your body. If you tend to run hot, dress light so the pillow won’t cause you to overheat.

When it comes to wearing a travel pillow in public, it’s best to avoid wearing it around your neck when walking around the airport. Instead, loop it around the handles of your bag to avoid turning heads for the wrong reason.

Finally, always ensure that you have inflated your pillow to the correct level before using it. Some body pillows inflate and deflate for easy storage, so make sure you know how to inflate and deflate your pillow before you travel.

Understanding the Different Types of Travel Pillows

Travel pillows come in various shapes, sizes, and materials. They are specially designed for different forms that provide comfort and support during travel, especially on the long journey. They are designed to provide comfort in different places for you to travel. When choosing a travel pillow, you will consider the different factors in the form of travel for choosing the different patterns and styles according to the need for your best comfort.

Inflatable pillows

Inflatable travel pillows are a famous choice for their portability and adjustability. These pillows can be inflated and deflated, making them easy to pack and store. They are also adjustable, allowing you to customize the level of support and firmness. Inflatable pillows are ideal for those who prefer a firmer pillow or need additional neck support during travel.

Memory foam pillows

Memory foam travel pillows are designed to contour the shape of your neck and head. When choosing a memory base pillow, it is essential to consider different factors and have different features like density, firmness, and your preferred sleeping position. When you choose a pillow, various properties are necessary for selection—adaptive support, pressure Relief, Alignment, Hypoallergenic Properties, Durability, shape, and size. To choose depends on individual comfort preference, and any specific sleep-related issue must be addressed.

Neck pillows

Neck pillows are a classic travel pillow choice and have been around for years. They are designed to wrap around your neck, offering support and cushioning for your head and neck during travel. Neck pillows are often made of memory foam or microbeads, and they come in various sizes and shapes to accommodate different neck sizes and preferences.

While traveling, you want to improve your sleep by looking at the best pillow for different sleep patterns by relieving and supporting the pattern of your sleep. Most sleeping pillows will have different forms of neck pillows and have a light and practical choice by providing soft and good cushioning for your head and neck. Choosing a proper height for your neck in a different style is sometimes challenging. Understanding the many types of travel pillows available allows you to choose the ideal option for your next vacation.

Finding the Right Size and Shape

Choosing the right size and shape of a travel pillow is vital for comfortable and restful travel. A pillow that is too small or too large will not give the proper support needed for the neck and head, leading to discomfort and even pain. Similarly, a pillow not shaped correctly for the individual’s body type can also cause discomfort.

The best way to determine a travel pillow’s correct size and shape is to consider personal preferences and body type. A smaller person may prefer a smaller pillow, while a larger person may require a giant pillow to accommodate their neck and head. Additionally, individuals who tend to sleep on their sides may need a pillow with a different shape than those who sleep on their backs.

Adjusting the Travel Pillow for Neck Support

Proper adjustment of the travel pillow is crucial for providing adequate neck support and reducing discomfort during sleep. Follow these steps for optimal alignment:

  • Positioning:  Place the pillow behind your neck and center it to align with the base of your skull.
  • Securing:  Fasten the pillow in place using the adjustable straps or any other securing mechanism available.
  • Head support:  Adjust the pillow’s height to support your head without straining your neck or causing chin flexion (i.e., chin to chest).
  • Body posture:  Ensure proper body posture by aligning your neck and spine with the pillow. Avoid slouching or leaning forward.

Remember to experiment with different techniques until you find the most comfortable and effective way to adjust the travel pillow. Taking the time to align the pillow properly can make a not difference in alleviating neck pain and improving sleep quality during your travels.

Securing the Travel Pillow in Different Travel Situations

Securing your travel pillow properly during a journey can significantly affect your comfort level. Here are some tips to help you position and secure your pillow in different travel situations:

If you’re planning on using a travel pillow during a flight, it’s essential to secure it correctly. Most travel pillows are designed to wrap around the neck so they are positioned perfectly. Place the pillow behind your neck and bring the ends forward, looping them over the airplane seat’s headrest. Adjust the pillow as needed to ensure proper support.

When traveling by train, you may find it more challenging to secure your travel pillow. If the train seat has a headrest, loop the pillow over it and adjust it to your desired support level. If there is no headrest, wrap the pillow around your neck and position it so that your head rests on top of it.

Securing your travel pillow while traveling by car depends on whether you are a driver or a passenger. If you are the passenger, you can ensure the pillow as you would on an airplane. However, it’s best to avoid securing the pillow to the headrest if you are the driver. Instead, opt for a pillow that rests on your shoulders and doesn’t restrict your movement or vision.

Additional Tips for Using a Travel Pillow

Using a travel pillow can significantly enhance your travel comfort, but you can use a few additional tips and tricks to get the most out of your pillow. Here are some things to keep in mind:

  • Adjust the pillow during your sleep:  If you wake up feeling discomfort, don’t hesitate to adjust your pillow’s position. You can move it higher or lower on your neck or shift it slightly to the left or right.
  • Use a pillowcase:  A pillowcase can help keep your travel pillow clean and hygienic. Look for a soft, breathable fabric that’s easy to wash and dry.
  • Choose the right size:  Make sure you choose a travel pillow that’s the right size for your neck and body. A pillow that’s too small or too large can cause discomfort and negate the benefits of a travel pillow.
  • Experiment with different wearing techniques:  Don’t be afraid to try other methods for wearing your travel pillow. You might find that a slightly different position or angle provides better support and comfort.
  • Pack your pillow correctly:  When packing your travel pillow, make sure it’s compressed or folded so it doesn’t damage the pillow or take up too much space in your luggage.

By following these additional tips and techniques, you can make the most of your travel pillow and enjoy maximum comfort on your journeys.

Benefits of Wearing a Travel Pillow

Properly wearing a travel pillow during your journeys can offer various benefits beyond comfort. Here are some advantages:

  • Reduced neck and back pain:  Wearing a travel pillow can adequately support your neck and spine, reducing discomfort and stiffness.
  • Better sleep quality:  A comfortable and supportive travel pillow can help you sleep better while traveling, leading to more energy and a better mood upon arrival.
  • Enhanced travel comfort:  A travel pillow can help you relax and enjoy your journey, whether it’s by plane, train, or car.

Investing in a quality travel pillow and wearing it properly can significantly impact your travel experience. Not only will it provide physical comfort, but it can also enhance your overall well-being during your journeys.

Choosing the Right Travel Pillow for You

Choosing the right travel pillow is crucial for maximum comfort during your journeys. Various travel pillows are available, each with its features and benefits. Here are some factors to consider when selecting the right travel pillow:

   Factor Description

Material Consider the material of the pillow, such as memory foam or inflatable plastic, to determine which is the best fit for your preferences.

Design Think about the pillow’s design, such as the shape and whether it includes additional features like a hood or earplugs.

Portability Consider how convenient it is to carry the pillow with you during your travels, whether it can be compressed or easily attached to your luggage.

Price Think about your budget and find a pillow that fits within it while providing the necessary comfort and support.

It’s essential to try different travel pillow options and see which works best for you. Remember, the goal is to find a travel pillow that provides the most comfort and support for your needs.

Caring for Your Travel Pillow

To ensure your travel pillow remains in good condition and provides optimal support, it is crucial to take proper care of it. Below are some tips on how to maintain and clean your travel pillow:

   Maintenance Practices Cleaning Methods

  •    When unused, store your travel pillow in a dry, cool place, such as closet or drawer. Follow the manufacturer’s guidelines on how to do cleaning of your travel pillow.
  •   Avoid folding or compressing your pillow for long periods. Use a gentle cycle and soft detergent if your travel pillow is machine washable.
  •    Air out your pillow after each use to prevent unpleasant odors and bacteria build-up. If hand washing your pillow, use warm water and gentle soap.
  •    Do not overinflate your inflatable travel pillow, as it can damage the seams and cause leaks. Allow your travel pillow to air dry completely before using it again.

By following these tips, you can help prolong the life of your travel pillow and keep it fresh and clean for your next journey.

Travel Pillow Alternatives

Travel pillows are a popular choice for neck and head support during travel, but they are not the only option. Several alternatives exist for those who find traditional travel pillows uncomfortable or inconvenient.

Scarf Pillows

Scarf pillows are an excellent option for those who want a more stylish neck support solution. These pillows are designed to look like a scarf but with added padding at the neck area for support. They can be worn like a scarf or draped over the shoulder for extra comfort during travel.

Travel Hoodies

Travel hoodies are another alternative to traditional travel pillows. These hoodies have an integrated hood that can be inflated to provide neck support. They are perfect for those who want a more discreet way to travel comfortably.

Inflatable Neck Braces

Inflatable neck braces are a popular alternative to travel pillows that provide excellent neck support. These braces are designed to wrap around the neck and can be inflated to provide customized support. They are lightweight and easy to pack, making them an excellent option for frequent travelers.

When selecting an alternative to a travel pillow, one must consider personal preferences and needs. Whether it is style, comfort, or convenience, there is an alternative out there that can meet your travel needs.

Travel isn’t always as luxurious as the brochures make it seem. Sure, the destination may be intoxicatingly gorgeous, but the journey to get there is often one of cramped seats and uninterrupted noise. Traveling can be a gauntlet to be endured or, if you equip yourself properly beforehand, a mere speed bump to glide over. From travel pillows and noise-canceling headphones to luggage trackers, it turns out you actually can purchase peace of mind. These are the best travel accessories after years of traveling and testing.

Don't count on always finding an outlet. You never know when the café or airport you’re in will be outlet-deficient, and it's almost a running joke at this point at how often the airliners' onboard outlets are broken. The Nimble Champ Series 2 is our top recommendation in our Best Portable Chargers guide because of the company's environmentally friendly efforts in its manufacturing and packaging . Its light at 6.2 ounces, and we recommend the medium-size 10,000-mAh option, which can recharge a smartphone several times. There's a smaller version and a larger one too.

Charge Everything at Once

For the Apple devotee who travels complete with an iPhone, Apple Watch, and AirPods, consider picking up this 3-in-1 charger that can top off the juice in all three of your devices at the same time. No more prioritizing which one of your devices gets the precious outlet. No wonder WIRED senior reviews editor Julian Chokkattu raved about it in our Best Apple 3-in-1 Chargers guide . It comes with a felt pouch, plus a charging adapter and cable. There are three pads, one with a grooved spot for holding AirPods, one magnetic pad for MagSafe iPhones, and another for the Apple Watch.

Learn to Adapt

When I'm traveling, there are never enough power outlets. WIRED reviewer Simon Hill gave this model top marks in his Best Travel Adapters guide because of how securely plugs stick into this outlet. It has enough built-in outlet styles to charge devices in 200 countries. It also offers three USB-A ports, which deliver a maximum charging rate of 15.5 watts, and two USB-C ports, which deliver up to 18 watts through one PD and one QC 3.0 port. That's enough to juice up iPads and smartphones, but stick to the outlet for your laptop.

Any little thing that makes a bag stand out from the acres of look-alikes on the baggage carousel, the better. These come in a snazzy rotating collection of designs by select artists, and they attach surprisingly securely by slipping the larger end through the hole after looping it around a baggage handle. Even after tens of thousands of airline miles, mine have held up without wear or tear. Call me paranoid, but you should have two luggage tags, in case one gets torn off. Good thing these come in a two-pack.

Keeping Track

We have mixed thoughts on AirTags, but if you have an iPhone, they are among the best ways to keep a digital eye on your bags. These trackers utilize the sheer number of iPhones and Apple devices out there to regularly report their location back to your device. Even if you don't plan on checking your bag, you might end up having to gate-check it on crowded flights. Drop an AirTag into an interior pocket to make sure you and your luggage are reunited at your destination.

AirTags don't work with Android devices, so if you use an Android phone , our recommendation is the Chipolo One ($25) . We have more details about it in our Best Trackers guide , but the setup is simple, and you can even get alerts if you leave the house without it.

Catch Some Z’s

I've never been one to fall asleep on a plane. It's not that the audience bothers me—I'll never see these people again—but rather that it’s impossible to fall asleep in a near-vertical seat. The Travelrest ( 9/10, WIRED Recommends ) is the ultimate neck pillow because it remedied this problem. Thanks to its high, contoured sides and a flat back that keeps it square against the seat, I can reliably nod off on any flight. The Travelrest easily beats those rounded, doughnut-shaped neck pillows for comfort and support.

To Safeguard Your Electronics

Some countries have less reliable electrical infrastructure, and you never know how well-wired that discount hotel's outlets are. Protect your device from getting fried with this compact, one-outlet surge protector. It has a lifetime warranty and $5,000 of coverage if your device is damaged from a power surge while using it. I haven't had to test that aspect of it, but the two USB-A ports are convenient when I've had to charge earbuds, battery banks, and other accessories.

Pillow

A Better Pillow

Hotel pillows tend to have all the firmness and support of a wet roll of toilet paper that's been stomped on for 30 minutes. That tends to mean that vacation memories are accompanied by a stiff neck. Side sleepers like me need a firm yet poofy pillow. I've caught more good nights of sleep on this Therm-a-Rest than I can count. It rolls up into an integrated pouch, and a cinch compresses it into the size of a large water bottle for storage.

Tip the Scales

A scale is handy to have when you're packing a heavy bag for an upcoming trip. Avoid those enormous surcharges and make sure your bag is under the airlines’ weight limits before you arrive at the check-in counter. International airlines are sticklers for carry-on weight, and even US airlines will be unforgiving about the weight of checked bags. I've used this scale for years, and I prefer the simplicity of not needing any batteries. It's accurate, easy to read the gauge, and the strap is strong enough in the long term to handle some seriously heavy luggage without fraying or breaking.

To Protect Your Laptop

Travel through enough airports without a case and it’s only a matter of time before a bare laptop or tablet picks up nasty scratches and dents. Protect your devices from banging around in the security bins against keys, phones, and belts with this slim laptop sleeve, available for laptops of several common sizes. The water-resistant zippers are smooth and slide easily, and the padded, non-scratch material protected our MacBooks from a few bouts of rough handling by over-eager TSA agents without any exterior damage. Even if you don't normally use one, consider picking one up just for travel. For tablets, check out the Zugu iPad Case for $50 . We have guides for choosing the best laptop backpacks and laptop totes , too.

Mosquito Guard

In much of the world, mosquitoes aren't just pests. They carry life-threatening diseases such as malaria, dengue fever, and Japanese encephalitis. Even in hotel rooms in certain places, you're not safe from them. When I traveled through Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos last year, I brought this mosquito bed net with me. It's large enough for most two-person mattresses, and an elastic rim tucks underneath the mattress so that there are no gaps for critters to sneak through. The World Health Organization says a minimum of 156 holes per square inch are needed to keep mosquitoes out. This model has 500 tiny holes per square inch, making it that much more secure.

Amazon Kindle Paperwhite

A Good Book, or 20

There's nothing like tackling a long ride on a train or plane with a good old book. But if you're a voracious reader or traveling on a long trip, a few books can take up a lot of room in your luggage. The Kindle Paperwhite's glare-resistant E Ink display is less harsh on your eyes than a typical tablet screen, so you can read for a long while before fatigue sets in ( 8/10, WIRED Recommends ). With 8 GB of storage, there's room for thousands of books. You can find more recommendations in our Best Kindles and Best Ebook Readers guides.

Cable Matters Thunderbolt 4 USBC cable

Top Up Your Devices

Not all USB cables are made equal. This Cable Matters cord came out on top in our testing (read more in our Best USB Cables guide ), thanks to its ability to handle 100 watts—enough to charge a power-hungry laptop. It also can transfer data at an impressive 40 Gbps. The 6.6-foot cable is an active cable too, which means it has a chip inside to push data further without degradation. It supports DisplayPort Alt Mode (DP Alt Mode), meaning you can use it to connect your laptop to a portable monitor, along with USB Power Delivery (USB-PD) and Programmable Power Supply (PPS), so that certain devices will fast charge through the cable. Seriously, it's the one USB-C cable to rule them all.

EPOS Sennheiser headphones

Maintain Your Sanity

Anyone who's spent time on public transportation knows that the cacophony of shouting, crying, and other people's loud devices can be maddening when you're stuck in your seat for the next few hours. The Sennheiser Adapt 660 ( 8/10, WIRED Recommends ) are our favorite value noise-canceling headphones . WIRED associate reviews editor Parker Hall says they are comfortable and one of the lightest headphones he's tested. You can count on excellent sound quality for up to 30 hours of usage.

Bose QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds

For Compact Peace and Quiet

WIRED reviewer Simon Lucas praised these Bose earbuds as having hands-down the best noise-cancellation. It's the top pick in our Best Wireless Earbuds guide, though they are expensive. He says their “naturalistic, vivid sound” is untouched by any counter-signal or audio evidence that the noise cancellation is working to muffle unwanted background sounds. That means you can enjoy that movie or album without jet engines and passenger chatter disturbing your peace.

Sennheiser IE200 inear headphones

Whether you'd like to plug directly into the seatback entertainment system or just don't feel like juggling one more device that needs frequent charging, wired headphones are by no means obsolete. These nabbed the top spot in our Best Wired Headphones guide , thanks to the excellent sound quality of the two 7-mm, full-range dynamic drivers that deliver punchy, finely detailed audio at a reasonable price. WIRED associate reviews editor Parker Hall reports that they're comfortable and secure in his ears, and the detachable cable is braided for durability.

Wandrd Roam camera bag

A Nice Travel Sling

You don't want to tote around a heavy bag when you're seeing the sights at your destination. Pack the small version of the Wandrd Roam ( 3 liters ) and you'll have plenty of space for a compact camera, a spare lens, cables, a phone, a wallet, and more. The YKK weather-resistant zippers ensure things will stay dry in the rain. Available in 3, 6, and 9 liters , you can size up if you feel like you want to carry a little bit more on your journey. Read more about it in our Best Camera Bags guide .

Mountainsmith Tour bag

An All-Day Stash

Think past the journey to the destination and consider how you'll keep your devices, maps, snacks, and charging accessories handy when you're at your destination. The Tour is our best all-day waist pack and another great mini bag to consider aside from the Wandrd Roam. Thanks to pockets galore, WIRED editor Michael Calore says he can fit a change of clothes and a couple of ready-to-eat meals in there, with room to spare. Two water bottle pockets and a zippered phone pouch maintain the essentials, and when the pack gets too heavy, an included shoulder strap turns it into a sling.

new OLED nintendo switch

Entertainment is awfully limited if you rely on the seatback video system of an airplane, and its absent on trains, most buses, and some low-cost carriers. If you're feeling particularly active and want something other than a book or movie, delve into any fantasy world of your choosing with the Nintendo Switch OLED ( 8/10, WIRED Recommends ). WIRED reviews editor Julian Chokkattu found the 7-inch OLED screen fantastic and the kickstand much-improved over the old model. It’s stable, secure, easy to pull out, and adjustable to a wide range of angles, and you can get that long gaming session in by propping it on your meal tray, no matter how far back the guy in front of you reclines his seat.

Roverlund Pet Carrying Bag

Bring Your Best Friend

More of us are taking our four-legged pals with us on our journeys these days, but the trials of travel are no easier on them than they are on us. WIRED senior reviews editor Julian Chokkattu loves this pet carrier for how stable and soft its base is. He says the straps are thicker than most competing bags, and they stayed on his shoulder securely. You can clip a leash to the built-in carabiner, and there's a small stash pocket for poo bags. The best part is how well-ventilated it is, and there are multiple ways to open the bag and check on your pet. It's compliant with most major airlines’ policies.

Pocketalk device on yellow background

Make Yourself Understood

It's tough to learn a new language, especially if it's just for a vacation booked a few months in advance. But you really should know the basics of conversation to be a good guest. WIRED contributor Christopher Null reviewed the Pocketalk Plus Voice Translator ( 7/10, WIRED Review ), which translates conversations between different languages in real time. He praised how reasonably quickly it provided translations, its intuitive interface, and the number of supported languages. This kind of device makes sense only if you're traveling to multiple destinations in a year. Otherwise, you can probably get by with Google Translate.

If you want to work toward learning a new language yourself, check out our Best Language Learning Apps guide .

White rounded rectangular device with two buttons on the front and a cord coming out of the top

Connect the Unconnected

Love your wireless earbuds but hate that you can't connect them to the screen embedded in the airplane seat in front of you? The AirFly is a Bluetooth adapter that plugs into a standard headphone jack and connects to your wireless buds. I used the AirFly SE model, and I found no noticeable change in audio quality, at least from a few feet away when I took it on a flight. You get volume control buttons so you don't have to tap on the screen, and a double-tap mutes the audio too. Twelve South claims 20 hours of battery life, and although battery life can differ based on usage, it felt like a pretty accurate estimate in my experience watching movies and listening to music on the plane.

Two hands holding up a large beige blanket that has 2 pockets toward the bottom. To the right is the small soft carrying...

For Chilly Flights and Nights

You can't count on your hotel being as warm as you might like, and don't get me started on how cold they keep airplane cabins. Forget the scratchy blankets they sell on board and bring this lightweight, packable travel blanket if you're prone to the chills. I like how my feet fit in the “leg pockets,” my hands in the hand warmers, and how securely it stays around my neck with the button snap. The zippered pocket was perfectly sized for my AirPod case and for at least a few of those free snacks I felt like saving for later. It's also a great blanket to bring for road trips, in case you plan on sleeping in the car.

Small clear jar with silver lid and white label. Small white tablets are scattered in the background.

Don't Forget the Toothpaste

Consider this alternative to conventional toothpaste, especially if you find yourself butting up against the TSA's 3-1-1 rule . WIRED reviewer Medea Giordano enjoyed these toothpaste tablets while she was running tests for her Best Electric Toothbrushes guide. You just bite down on them and start brushing. You also get bonus points for reducing the amount of plastic waste you'd otherwise generate via toothpaste tubes—the packaging here is all glass bottles and compostable pouches.

Hydro Flask Coffee Mug with Flex Sip Lid

Stay Hydrated

Travel, especially air travel, puts you in a bit of a bind when it comes to cutting down on your usage of single-use plastics. While you can't show up at the airport with your own drinks, you can do your part after you've passed through security. In my search for the best travel mugs , this Hydro Flask Coffee Mug came out on top. It's insulated, so it'll keep your coffee warm for longer than any flight. It's narrow enough to fit any cupholder, and no matter how much I banged it around, the tough powder-coated metal showed neither a scratch nor a dent. Unlike many water bottle manufacturers who use lead in their bottle construction , Hydro Flask has been lead-free since 2013.

White cylindrical container with an angled spout on the top left and a handle on the rightside. A small burst of steam...

Get Steamed

Hotels often have an iron and ironing board available, but I find it quicker and easier to steam my clothes. WIRED reviewer Medea Giordano and I both have been using Urpowers for years. For a tiny thing, it's powerful and effective at steaming practically anything in a minute or two. You just need to refill it often; one reservior is enough for one or two garments, at most. If you're going to another state or country for an important event, like a wedding, this is a must-have.

How To Wear A Travel Pillow? User-friendly Guide

Travel-Pillows

Traveling is more than just an escape from the mundane routines of daily life. It’s an opportunity to explore new cultures, broaden your horizons, and deepen your understanding of the world. One of the significant benefits of traveling is the enriching personal development it provides, allowing you to experience first-hand the diversity of global civilizations. Additionally, it offers a chance to disconnect from your regular life, reducing stress and recharging your mental energy.

However, these traveling benefits are not without their challenges. One of the biggest struggles is knowing how to get quality rest while in transit or waiting in airports and train stations. Consequently, many travelers use travel pillows as a comfortable way to catch some sleep anywhere.

Travel pillows are a vital accessory for those embarking on long journeys. You need to bring these items with passport holders , wallets, and other necessary items when you travel. Whether on a flight, a road trip, or a train travel, the comfort of a travel pillow can make a significant difference. These specially designed pillows support your neck and head in a natural position, helping to prevent soreness and discomfort. They’re compact, lightweight, and easily portable, making them an ideal companion for travelers. This user-friendly guide walks you through how to wear a travel pillow correctly to ensure you get the most out of its benefits.

What Is a Travel Pillow?

A travel pillow is a specialized pillow designed explicitly for travel purposes. Unlike conventional pillows, these are ergonomically crafted to adapt to the contours of your neck and head, providing optimal support and comfort during travel . The unique shape and design cater to the varied sleeping positions experienced during travel.

They are compact and lightweight, making them easy to carry and store inside aluminum suitcases . They also often come with features such as memory foam padding or inflatable options for added convenience. The goal of a travel pillow is to mitigate the discomfort associated with sleeping in transit, ensuring you arrive at your destination well-rested and ready to explore.

Types of Travel Pillows

Travel pillows come in various shapes and designs, each catering to specific needs and preferences.

  • Neck Pillows : The neck pillow is the most common type of travel pillow. Shaped like a horseshoe, it wraps around your neck, providing support and keeping your head from falling to the sides while you sleep. They are ideal for napping seated, commonly on planes, buses, or cars. Neck pillows are often filled with memory foam that molds to the shape of your neck, ensuring personalized comfort.
  • Lumbar Pillows : Lumbar pillows are specifically designed to support the lower back area, helping to maintain a natural posture and relieve pressure on the spine. They are particularly beneficial during extended periods of sitting, making them a great choice for long flights or car rides. Lumbar pillows are typically rectangular or wedge-shaped and are placed between the back of the seat and your lower back.
  • Inflatable Pillows : Inflatable travel pillows are a versatile and portable option. You can easily inflate them to your desired firmness and then deflate them when not in use for compact storage. They come in various shapes, including neck and lumbar designs. Inflatable pillows are a practical choice for backpackers or those with limited space in their luggage.

Benefits of Using Travel Pillow

Travel pillows provide various benefits that can significantly enhance your travel experience.

Improved Sleep Quality

Improved Sleep Quality

Travel pillows serve to improve the quality of sleep during travel drastically. Their ergonomic design supports the head and neck in a manner that maintains proper alignment, mirroring the position they would naturally assume when sleeping in a bed. This helps prevent your head from falling into uncomfortable positions during sleep, reducing the likelihood of waking up frequently and ensuring a more continuous and deeper sleep.

Good sleep is critical, not just for the overall travel experience but also for reducing fatigue upon reaching your destination. By preventing your neck from craning into unnatural positions, travel pillows also reduce the chances of waking up with a stiff neck or experiencing discomfort during your journey. This ensures that upon arrival, you feel refreshed and ready to embrace the adventure that awaits rather than needing to recover from the journey itself.

Using materials such as memory foam in many travel pillows also enhances comfort, as these materials mold to the shape of your neck and head, providing a customized fit. This increases comfort during use and further reduces pressure on the neck and shoulders, contributing to a more relaxed and restful sleep.

Neck Strain Prevention

Travel pillows play a crucial role in preventing neck strain during travel . Their unique design is aimed at maintaining the natural alignment of your head and neck, reducing the chances of your neck being forced into uncomfortable and potentially damaging positions. By providing proper support, travel pillows help distribute the head’s weight evenly, relieving pressure on the neck muscles.

Specifically, horseshoe-shaped neck pillows, when worn correctly, fill the gap between your neck and the seat, thereby preventing your head from falling to the side. This eliminates the strain on one side of the neck and maintains a neutral position.

Inflatable pillows offer the bonus of adjustability. You can inflate them to the desired level to achieve optimal firmness and support for your neck. Memory foam pillows, however, mold to the shape of your neck and head, reducing pressure points and providing personalized comfort.

These features of travel pillows work collectively to prevent neck strain, allowing you to rest comfortably and wake up without pain or stiffness in your neck. This is particularly beneficial for travelers who spend long hours in transit, as it reduces the risk of developing chronic neck problems.

Reduced Discomfort

By alleviating discomfort caused by inadequate or uncomfortable sleeping arrangements, travel pillows significantly enhance the quality of the journey, whether on planes, trains, or buses. Traditional seats in these modes of transport are not designed with sleep comfort as a priority, often leading to awkward sleeping and subsequent discomfort or pain. Travel pillows, however, address this issue effectively.

Firstly, the ergonomically designed shape of these pillows provides a comfortable resting surface for your head and neck, preventing them from falling into awkward positions that may cause strain. This is particularly beneficial in cramped spaces like airplane seats, where space is typically limited. A travel pillow can also fill the gap between your neck and the seat, providing a supportive cushion that maintains your head in a more natural, upright position.

Secondly, travel pillows alleviate discomfort by creating a sense of personal space in shared or crowded environments, such as a packed bus or train. The pillow acts as a barrier, providing a degree of separation and privacy and helping you relax and sleep more easily.

Finally, certain types of pillows, like inflatable ones, offer the unique advantage of adjustability, allowing you to control the level of firmness to suit your comfort needs. Similarly, memory foam pillows mold to the contours of your neck and head, offering personalized comfort and support.

How to Wear a Travel Pillow?

Here are step-by-step instructions on how to wear and use different types of travel pillows

How to Wear a Neck Pillow

  • Position the Pillow: Place the U-shaped neck pillow around your neck. The open ends of the U should be pointing toward the front of your body.
  • Adjust the Fit: Adjust the pillow to feel comfortable and snug around your neck. The back part of the pillow should be thicker and more supportive, while the sides should cradle your neck and chin. Ensure the pillow is not too loose or too tight.
  • Use the Fastener: Most neck pillows have a fastener or hook and loop at the front. Connect these to secure the pillow around your neck. Some models have adjustable fasteners, allowing you to control the tightness.
  • Rest Your Head: Lean your head back against the pillow. The design should support your neck and prevent your head from falling to the sides.

How to Use a Lumbar Pillow

Lumbar Pillow

  • Place the Pillow: Position the lumbar pillow vertically against the backrest of your seat. It should support your lower spine in the small of your back.
  • Adjust the Position: Adjust the pillow until you feel an even pressure along your lower back. This means it is in the correct position.
  • Sit Back: Lean back in your seat, ensuring your lower back presses against the pillow. It should help to maintain a natural curvature of your spine and alleviate pressure on your lower back.

How to Use an Inflatable Pillow

Inflatable Pillows

  • Inflate the Pillow: Inflate the pillow by blowing air into its valve until it reaches your preferred firmness level. Be careful not to overinflate, as this could make the pillow uncomfortable.
  • Position the Pillow: Depending on the shape of the inflatable pillow, position it around your neck or against your lower back. Ensure it feels comfortable and supportive.
  • Secure the Pillow: If it’s a neck pillow, secure it using the attached fastener. If it’s a lumbar pillow, ensure it’s positioned correctly in the small of your back.
  • Rest and Adjust as Needed: Rest your head or back against the pillow. You can adjust the level of inflation as needed for optimal comfort.

Remember, each person is different, and what works for one might not work for another. It’s all about personal comfort, so adjust these guidelines to suit your needs. Most importantly, you feel comfortable, supported, and able to relax on your journey.

Travel Pillow: Cleaning and Maintenance

Like any other personal item, a travel pillow demands regular cleaning and maintenance to ensure hygiene and longevity. But you cannot simply put these items into laundry bags and have them washed for you. Here are some ways to ensure the proper cleaning and maintenance of travel pillows:

Cleaning Fabric Pillows

Fabric-covered travel pillows, such as those filled with memory foam or other non-washable materials, usually come with removable covers that can be cleaned separately. Here’s how to go about it:

  • Remove the Cover: Unzip it and gently remove it from the pillow. Be careful not to damage the foam or filling inside.
  • Read the Care Label: Before washing, always read the care instructions on the label. It will indicate the suitable water temperature and washing methods.
  • Pre-treat Stains: If there are any visible stains on the cover, pre-treat them with a small amount of mild detergent. Gently rub it in and leave it for a few minutes before washing.
  • Handwash the Cover: Fill a basin with cool or warm water, as the care label indicates. Add a small amount of mild detergent and mix until it’s well-dissolved. Submerge the cover, gently agitating it in the water. Avoid harsh scrubbing or twisting that could damage the fabric.
  • Rinse Thoroughly: Drain the basin and rinse the cover under running water until all the detergent is removed. Squeeze gently to remove excess water, but don’t wring or twist it.
  • Air-Dry: Lay the cover flat to dry in a well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight, to prevent color fading. Make sure it’s completely dry before putting it back on the pillow to avoid mold or mildew growth.

Remember, each travel pillow is unique, and cleaning methods may vary according to the materials used. It’s always best to follow the manufacturer’s instructions to maintain the longevity and performance of your travel pillow.

Cleaning Inflatable Pillows

Due to their material and construction, inflatable travel pillows require a slightly different cleaning approach. Here’s a simple step-by-step guide:

  • Deflate the Pillow: Begin by deflating your inflatable travel pillow completely. This will make cleaning easier and allow you to reach all the pillow’s surface areas.
  • Clean the Surface: Use a damp cloth soaked in warm water and mild soap to clean the pillow’s surface gently. Pay special attention to the areas where your skin has direct contact, like the neck and head zones.
  • Rinse: After wiping, rinse the pillow using another clean damp cloth soaked in warm water. This will help remove any soap residue left on the pillow’s surface.
  • Air-Dry: Once cleaned, it’s important to let the pillow air dry completely. You can hang it in a well-ventilated area. Do not expose it to direct sunlight for prolonged periods, as it can damage the material.
  • Inspect the Valve: Clean and dry the inflation valve as well. It’s a crucial component that needs to be maintained for the long-term performance of the pillow.

You should never machine wash or tumble dry an inflatable pillow as it could damage the air chamber. Always follow the manufacturer’s specific cleaning instructions. Regular cleaning will keep your pillow fresh, hygienic, and ready for your next journey.

Bottom Line

Travel pillows significantly enhance the travel experience by improving sleep quality, preventing neck strain, and reducing discomfort. The ergonomic design of these pillows maintains the natural alignment of your head and neck, prevents them from falling into uncomfortable positions, and provides a comfortable and supportive cushion. The features of travel pillows, such as being inflatable or made of memory foam, allow for adjustability and personalized comfort. By offering a sense of personal space in shared or crowded environments, travel pillows also help create a more relaxed travel atmosphere. Further, with proper cleaning and maintenance, these pillows remain hygienic and fresh for every journey, ensuring a comfortable, pain-free, and enjoyable travel experience.

woman wearing a neck pillow

At times we are compensated for the links you click at no cost to you. Learn more about why you should trust our reviews and view our disclosure page .

Did you get a neck pillow for traveling but you’re not exactly sure how to use it? Then you’ve come to the right place. We spent hours researching about how to wear a neck pillow for maximum comfort and better sleep while you travel. Read the full article below for easy steps and an essential tip that will do wonders for you.

How to properly wear a neck pillow

woman wearing neck pillow on plane

Follow these five steps to properly wear a neck pillow:

  • Place the pillow around your neck
  • Recline your seat,
  • Wear a sleep mask,
  • Rotate the pillow
  • Place the pillow on the tray to lean forward if necessary

I’ll go into more detail on each step below.

1. Place the pillow around your neck

Most u-shaped neck pillows will fit around the back of your neck with the opening over your throat. Some travel pillows will also have straps that cross the opening to keep it in place. If your pillow is not u-shaped, it may be designed to fit between your shoulder and your head instead of around your neck.

2. Recline your seat

Since u-shaped travel pillows are designed to support your head as it falls back, slightly recline your seat to get a more comfortable sleeping position. Remember to be mindful of the passengers behind you and be careful not to move the seat too far back.

3. Wear a sleep mask

If you’re traveling on a plane, there’s bound to be electronic lights whether it’s daytime or nighttime. To help you fall asleep easier, we recommend wearing a sleep mask to block out any lights. The Manta Sleep Mask is an excellent option which blocks out all sunlight and artificial light.

4. Rotate the pillow (if necessary)

Try rotating your u-shaped neck pillow so that it supports your chin as your head falls forward. If your travel pillow is one that fits on your shoulder, try switching shoulders to find the best position for you.

5. Place pillow on tray if you want to lean forward

tray table on plane

If you want to lean forward to sleep, a u-shaped pillow is ideal because they provide a space to put your face in while the rest of your head stays supported. Stomach sleepers are more likely to do this since they might find it more natural to lean forward instead of reclining.

Should you wear your travel pillow in the front?

We do recommend wearing your travel pillow in the front if you’re sleeping upright on a plane. Dr. Michael Breus, aka The Sleep Doctor, says that wearing your travel pillow in front will keep your head from bobbing and moving around.

However, it is important to note that this does not apply if you’re lying down and sleeping in a horizontal position. In this case, wearing the pillow the normal way will provide better support for your neck. You can also try sleeping without a pillow , but it may not be as comfortable.

You’re not really “supposed” to, but wearing a neck pillow backwards can support your neck better especially if you’re in an upright position.

Yes, neck pillows are great at providing support for the cervical region of your spine.

Yes, you can carry a neck pillow on a plane.

No, it does not have to fit in your carry-on. You can bring it on the plane as a personal item as long as it’s not bigger than your bag.

Wearing a travel pillow can be done around the back or the front your neck. Each method has its pros and cons and it all comes down you what you prefer more. Follow the tips that we shared above to get more comfortable and better sleep overall anytime you travel.

Next step: Read our Infinity Pillow Review . The Infinity Pillow is a uniquely-shaped pillow that’s ideal for travel. If you don’t like normal u-shaped travel pillows, then Infinity is the brand to go with.

Why Use a Travel Pillow? Here are 5 amazing benefits

Travel pillows are a fantastic idea- and not just for those long flights. If you spend a lot of time on the bus or train, a travel pillow should be your closest companion, whether you sleep en route or not.

Travel is however not the only reason to buy a good travel pillow. You can get one if you struggle with morning neck pain, your office chair is uncomfortable, and if your bed or mattress isn’t all that supportive. This u-shaped travel accessory comes in all forms and sizes, and it is incredibly versatile.

What is a Travel Pillow?

how travel pillows

You have probably seen your fellow commuters prop them behind their heads on a train or bus ride home. A travel pillow is a u-shaped pillow that provides a natural resting position for your head, maintaining the standard lordotic curve of your cervical spine and providing neck support.

The cervical spine is made up of seven bones in your neck, all cushioned by spongy cervical disks and supported by muscles. The normal shape of this cervical spine is a slight curve called the lordotic cervical curve.

Any activity that can cause you to lose that natural neck position or curve, such as bending your neck for too long or hunching over can cause stress on your spine and result in neck pain. That’s what happens when you’re on a bus or plane, or sleep in the wrong position at night.

The work of a travel pillow therefore is to maintain your neck’s natural curve and support your head so you don’t suffer later. These pillows are usually smaller than your home pillow and are comfortably tucked behind or around your neck, filling that space between your neck and headrest so your neck won’t bend backward.

Benefits of a Travel Pillow

When we talk about travel pillows, in this case, we are not discussing those stiff neck pillows provided by the airline. Those are wrapped with disposable felt, mesh, and a plastic layer for durability and easy sanitization.

A good neck pillow is made of warm, light, and breathable material and covered with a cotton or silk cover for comfort. It’s firm enough to support your neck, but it contours to the shape and movement of your head. The benefits of such a travel pillow go beyond its ability to support your head and neck. Other benefits include;

1. It mimics your home pillow

If your home memory foam pillow makes you feel like you are in cloud 9, you will be glad to know that many travel pillows today are made of memory foam. Other comfortable options are buckwheat and pure fiber. These materials retain the contours of your neck and head and provide stability against motion transfer.

The idea is to choose a travel pillow that feels the same way your home pillow does and mimics that level of comfort. Even if you are sitting up, the pillow will provide you the comfort you need to fall asleep or travel comfortably.

2. It’s warm and breathable

how travel pillows

One thing most people hate about travel is the lack of fresh air in whatever means you are traveling with. The air can often feel dry and musky, which causes your skin to feel pasty.

The plastic covers on the seats do not help either, and sleeping comfortably is next to impossible. A nice memory foam pillow is warm, breathable, and clean. You can comfortably lay your head down, and your cheeks and neck area won’t feel dry or sweaty.

3. Prevents fatigue

Travel in itself can be quite exhausting, especially if you are flying or traveling long haul. A good one or two-hour nap en route can help reduce that fatigue, so you arrive feeling refreshed.

Considering how uncomfortable bus and plane seats are, only a good travel pillow can help you catch a quick snooze. Not only will you fall asleep, but you’ll enjoy deep quality sleep because of the comfort.

4. Reduce snoring and sleep apnea

Ever been next to someone who was snoring loudly on the plane? I bet it wasn’t pretty. While snoring is a completely normal occurrence, it can be embarrassing and downright bothersome to your fellow travelers. The good news is that the annoying guy doesn’t have to be you, even if you snore at home.

A travel neck pillow keeps your neck and head upright, meaning your airways are not obstructed, preventing snoring and sleep apnea. Once you prop your head up inside that pillow, you can sleep soundly without bothering your neighbors.

5. It is portable and easy to take care of

how travel pillows

Gone are the days when travel pillows were the same size as your home pillow. Today, they are small and incredibly portable, even if you don’t want luggage. Some of the best travel pillows can fold up into very compact sizes, while some are inflatable so you can deflate when not in use.

Another plus on travel pillows is that you can easily toss them in the washing machine after every trip. This will keep them clean and smelling fresh. If you don’t want to wash the whole thing, you can simply remove the cover and have it cleaned.

How to Use a Travel Pillow

Most travel pillows are u-shaped because they are supposed to go around your neck. Some have straps to close the opening and keep it from falling off because it’s facing up. Ideally, you should recline your seat a little bit until you lean back to a comfortable position and then prop the pillow nicely around your neck to keep your head from falling back.

However, recent research shows that we have been doing it wrong all along. Apparently, the travel pillow should stop your neck and head from bobbing side to side, and not necessarily from falling back. According to Dr. Michael Breus , popularly known as The Sleep Doctor, the pillow should be facing up, so that the bottoms are touching the back of your head and not your chin.

Besides keeping your head from bobbing, the ears of the pillow keep your head from going backwards and out of alignment. This could explain why so many people have been claiming that travel pillows don’t work- they have been using it the wrong way.

How to Choose the Right Travel Pillow

how travel pillows

With all the benefits of a travel pillow, it’s a shock that everyone is not carrying one. However, all these benefits are not guaranteed unless you buy a high-quality travel pillow. The best travel pillow doesn’t have to be expensive, but there should be a balance between cost and quality, without forgetting preference.

That said, here are a few things you must consider when choosing a travel pillow;

The primary goal of a travel pillow is to support your head and neck. You get this support from the material inside, which is why it shouldn’t be too soft.

Memory foam and buckwheat provide ample support without being too hard. While you don’t want a pillow that is rock hard, you also don’t want too soft, like cotton or polyester inside.

Comfort is vital if you want to sleep well on the bus or plane. Again, comfort is dependent on what the pillow is made out of. Memory foam and buckwheat make extremely comfortable pillows because they are not too hard or too soft.

It must also be warm and breathable to avoid sweating and sticking on your face. Consider also the pillow’s top cover, which should be cotton or any other soft, smooth and breathable material.

Durability and ease of maintenance

A good travel pillow will be your travel companion everywhere you go. It must be tough, easy to maintain, and easy to store. When choosing a travel pillow, invest in good quality so it can last you a long while.

Make sure it’s easy to clean or wipe down, so you always have a fresh pillow. If possible, buy one with a washable zip cover, so you don’t have to wash the pillow every time.

Size and weight

When buying a travel pillow, remember that you’ll be hauling it across bus stations and airport stretches along with your other luggage.

That means it should be lightweight, compact, and highly portable. The best travel pillows have a bag with cords so you can fix it to the outside of your suitcase and have them as one luggage.

How to Maintain a Travel Pillow

Like every other pillow, you should always keep your travel pillow in a clean, dry place. If it’s not dusty outside, air it once in a while to keep it fresh and prevent dust mites and mold.

Unfortunately, most travel pillows are not machine washable, and washing it too much will cause damage. It is better to use a small vacuum cleaner to suck any dust on the pillow and clean the removable cover after every trip.

Our Recommendation

how travel pillows

If you are looking for a good high quality travel pillow, we recommend the Ostrichpillow Go Travel Pillow. It is made of high density memory foam and offer 360º natural ergonomic neck support. Because of the viscolastic sleeve the pillow feels very soft against your skin and it is also machine washable.

6 best travel pillows for any journey

When you make a purchase using links on our site, The Week may earn a commission. All reviews are written independently by our editorial team.

Whether you aim to take a cat nap on a short flight or catch some serious rest on a long road trip, a good travel pillow is great to have on hand. Here are six comfy options to pack for your next adventure.

Honeydew The Scrumptious Travel Pillow

The supportive Scrumptious Travel Pillow can be shaped to your specifications, in a matter of seconds. Just unzip it and either add or remove fill so it is the right height and level of firmness (and if it is perfect for you as is, all the better). The foam used in the fill is copper-infused, giving it cooling and antibacterial properties, and the pillow keeps its shape whether you are leaning back on it or curled up against a window.

$129.99, Honeydew Sleep Company

Trtl Pillow

This Trtl wins the race. The lightweight, adjustable pillow wraps around your neck, and has an internal support structure that keeps your head up. The Trtl resembles a scarf, and The Strategist's Rachael Griffiths said the first time she tried it, "I was out like a light." The angle of the brace "hits just right," and there was "no sloping so much that your neck bends unnaturally, but it's supportive enough for you to relax into a decent sleep."

$61.99, Amazon

J-Pillow Chin-Supporting Neck Pillow

The J-Pillow is designed to cradle the head, neck and chin, offering a comfortable alternative to the usual U-shaped travel pillow. Covered in soft fleece, the J-Pillow is "easy to use and fits securely while sleeping or resting during travels," Travel + Leisure said , adding that after being folded in the carrying case, its "J-shape didn't falter." This is a great choice for those who like to lean against the window.

$29.95, Amazon

Cabeau Evolution S3 Travel Neck Pillow

This substantial memory foam travel pillow has rave reviews, with Conde Nast Traveler declaring it "the best we've tested so far." Its biggest strength is the straps on the back of the pillow, which can be attached to a seat headrest. This helps to "keep your head upright and take any pressure off your neck," Conde Nast Traveler said. There is also a small storage area, so you can securely tuck away your earbuds or ear plugs.

$39.99, Amazon

Ostrichpillow Go Neck Pillow

The cozy Go Neck Pillow offers full support and makes it feel like you are "sleeping on a cloud," Travel + Leisure said . It is made of plush memory foam and has an asymmetrical design, so it is easy to adjust. The pillow is also easy to care for — just roll it up at the end of your journey and pop in the washing machine.

$60, Amazon

Bcozzy Neck Pillow for Travel

The Bcozzy pillow is for everyone, with its "multi-purpose design for all sleeping positions," Good Housekeeping said . The arms of the pillow can be positioned to "support your head whether it tends to fall forward or sideways," and there is a flat back to maintain spine alignment. The pillow is covered in a soft fleece, making it easy to relax and sink into.

Long trip to europe 4 ways to stay healthy while traveling.

Here are some tips for how to stay healthy while traveling around Europe.

Plenty of travelers will undertake a trip of a lifetime to Europe this year, spending weeks or months on the continent, hopping between countries and cities. Long trips can take their toll on mental and physical health but there are some precautions you can take and items you can pack to keep you feeling at the top of your vacation game. “The demands of constantly navigating different time zones, climates and destinations require us to be proactive in caring for our health and wellbeing while traveling,” says Jessica Sepel, founder of Australian wellness brand JSHealth Vitamins . Here are some tips for how to stay healthy while traveling around Europe.

Invest In A Refillable Water Bottle

Staying hydrated is key to feeling energetic and keeping your immune system healthy. It is also vital to avoid heatstroke when you’re spending hours under the hot sun sightseeing and can help combat jetlag. In Europe, tap water is generally safe to drink (although always double-check first) while many cities have public drinking fountains. This means it is convenient, eco-friendly and money-saving to invest in a refillable water bottle and bring it around with you instead of buying dozens of plastic single-use bottles. Sepel also warns travelers to be aware of alcohol intake on the plane. “Be sure to drink more water if you do choose to sip on a bubbly while in the skies,” she says,

Bring Nutritional Supplements

If you’re moving around a lot and sampling myriad cuisines, it’s natural for your dietary habits to go out the window. To avoid feeling sluggish or under the weather, bring a few key health supplements. Sepel recommends JSHealth’s Greens + Collagen as a convenient way to keep up nutrient intake when traveling as diets may look a little different with less home cooking. It contains green superfoods along with hydrolysed Marine Collagen. She adds a formula with a B vitamin complex for energy, stamina and recovery (it also helps with jetlag) and zinc to keep immunity strong. “If you experience bloating, a supplement with fennel seed is a great addition,” Sepel says. “I always have the Detox + Debloat tablets on hand when I travel to help relieve abdominal bloating while also supporting natural detoxification processes.”

Buy A Travel Pillow, Headphones And Eye Mask

If you are moving between locations in Europe, take advantage of flights and trains for some shuteye. Whether it’s a plump travel pillow, noise-cancelling headphones or velvet eye mask, bring whatever helps you drift off while on the move. A pair of earplugs isn’t a bad idea either and might come in handy in a thin-walled hotel room too. The help reset a sleep schedule disrupted by moving between time zones, Sepel recommends napping for about 3 hours on arrival, then trying to get up and carry on in the current time zone. “If you can then plan to go to bed at 7 pm, you should acclimate more easily and are then on track for the rest of your trip,” she says. Try taking a quality magnesium supplement at night to allow your nervous system to relax and wake up energised and refreshed.”

Pack A Medicine Bag

Traipsing around pharmacies is no way to spend a day on holiday, especially if a language barrier means struggling to find the medicine you need. Prior to your trip, pack a little bag of useful remedies including painkillers, anti-diarrhoea medication, antihistamines, plasters, decongestants, insect bite cream and motion sickness pills.

Photos of a robot vacuum and a fabric shaver in an illustrated collage.

Spring has sprung—which means it’s time to crack your windows, soak up some sunshine, and maybe, just maybe, tackle a few spring-cleaning projects.

Wirecutter journalists think about cleaning and organizing year-round, recommending all the best tools and methods that leave your space feeling fresh. The only thing better than having cleaning supplies that get the job done is stocking up on them at a discount.

We’ve rounded up the best deals on some of our favorite cleaning and organizing supplies below.

A vacuum that doesn’t suck

A Roborock Q5+ Robot Vacuum.

Roborock Q5+ Robot Vacuum — Our Pick Roborock deal price: $370 ; street price: $550

Compared with other robot vacuums we tested, our top pick, the Roborock Q5+ Robot Vacuum , offers better battery life, app navigation, mapping, and voice-command response. It’s excellent at cleaning hard floors and low- to medium-pile carpet. Like nearly all of its competition, it struggled to pick up debris near thresholds and baseboards in our tests. The Roborock Q5+ comes with a charging station that empties debris into a disposable bag. Use the code ROBOROCKS for the deal price.

Opting for a high-security shredder—such as our top pick, the Amazon Basics 8-Sheet High-Security Micro-Cut Shredder with Pullout Basket —can help you micro-cut documents with ease. It can run jam-free for nearly 10 minutes without overheating, and it includes a separate CD/DVD shredding slot. This shredder is slightly larger than other eight-sheet shredders with lift-up tops, but its functionality is worth the extra space it occupies.

A secure lockbox

Medication inside a Barska Compact Medication Lock Box.

Barska Compact Medication Lock Box — Upcoming Pick Amazon deal price: $41 ; street price: $51

If you’re reorganizing your medicine cabinet, it might be a good time to also invest in a lockable box to keep prescriptions and other medications safe from the little ones in your home. The Barska Compact Medication Lock Box is a wall-mounted metal lockbox that we’ll be recommending in our upcoming guide to keeping your stash—whether it’s marijuana or something else—secure. This mountable lockbox can accommodate pill bottles of all sizes and heights, along with other first-aid resources. It can also sit on a countertop, though we know that its stark-white metal style isn’t for everyone. Make sure to clip the on-page coupon for the deal price.

A quick fashion fix

A Homeasy Fabric Shaver.

Homeasy Fabric Shaver — Our Pick Amazon deal price: $22 ; street price: $25

Instead of replacing your closet staples, consider investing in some laundry aids that can help your clothes last a bit longer. The Homeasy Fabric Shaver is our top-pick electric fabric shaver for big jobs, such as de-pilling and de-fuzzing sweaters in need of some TLC after a long winter. It features six sharp blades, a wide head, and intuitive controls, and it proved very effective during our testing. It’s quiet, comfortable to hold, capable of lasting up to six hours on a full charge, and USB rechargeable. The deal price is about $2 higher than the lowest sale price we’ve seen, but this deal is still a good value.
