Braid’s “Frame & Canvas” 25th Anniversary Limited Edition Release from Polyvinyl
The entirely remixed and remastered album from Jawbox’s J. Robbins’ original tapes also features unseen photos from Andy Mueller and expanded liner notes. The band also announced 11 tour dates in the US starting in July.
As the original recording and mixing session of the album was done in a five-day panic, we’re thrilled that J. had the idea and the opportunity to take the time to revisit the raw tracks and create new mixes. In addition, working with our long-time friends Polyvinyl on this reissue has been a major burst of nostalgia and joy. We look forward to bringing that energy back on the road this year and look forward to playing the album for excited friends, old and new. Bob Nanna
We fired off a last-minute email to Braid’s Bob Nanna with ten burning questions, including a bonus question from Mark Rose of Spitalfield! Read the interview, and check out the newly released Killing A Camera music video below.

Watching the video for Killing a Camera in 2023 is like opening a DIY punk time capsule. What is something from that pre-smartphone era that seemed like a pain at the time but that you might look back on now in a fond or nostalgic way?
Bob Nanna: Obviously, cameras and film come to mind – in 1997 and 1998, I took pictures of each crowd at each show with a disposable camera. Same with all of my photos of just the random activities of being on the road. It was a pain to have to lug it all around and then hope it got developed correctly at Walgreens or wherever, but it’s nice to have filter-free memories of those times that I can hold in my hand.
I also loved making cassette mixes for each tour. I’d usually do 5-10 of them, and they’d get played and re-played over the course of a 6-week tour. Obviously now we have the massive convenience of every song ever being at our disposal, but back then it was like – you get these 20 songs 20 times, and you’re going to like it dammit.
When Braid was writing and recording Frame & Canvas, did you realize you were working on something special that would still connect with audiences 25 years later?
BN: We sure didn’t. We worked in that way where we would write enough songs to make a full album, record it, and then immediately start writing more songs. We weren’t planning on it to be our last album (at the time), and I think having that be our de facto swan song helped make the album into something people could spend time with and dissect and enjoy. Don’t get me wrong; I’m psyched that people can connect with it now. I can still connect with it even! But we weren’t sitting around Inner Ear congratulating ourselves.
What artists did you and your bandmates listen to when making Frame & Canvas?
BN: We were listening to a lot of our friends’ bands – Cap’n Jazz, the Promise Ring, Rainer Maria, The Get Up Kids, Castor – and then literally anything and everything that was coming out of DC (or sounded like it did) – Jawbox, Hoover, Lincoln, Fugazi obviously.
What was your songwriting process like 25 years ago, and how has your process changed over the years?
BN: We were such an efficient band, and we all loved “making songs” literally from “how does it begin” to “how does it end” as opposed to jamming for hours until something interesting comes up. I find it difficult to work in any other way, frankly, so it definitely stuck.
Between all of your full band and solo performances, is there a show that stands out as one you’ll always remember?
BN: For Braid, I have great memories of so many different shows for a variety of reasons, but the one that stands out to me is on that last weekend of shows in 1999 – bringing a spinning prize wheel of 32 songs onstage at fireside bowl and having it dictate our setlist and giving out fun prizes to the crowd from our history. Someone got a grocery bag full of cassettes from our van, for instance. It was super fun.
Favorite venue to play, active or defunct?
BN: It’s Metro by far. I have nothing but great experiences there. Still to this day.
Favorite tour meal?
BN: I’ll say generally, breakfast at a local diner. No specific place. I have a pretty strict “no food 4 hours before the set” rule so often times, dinners aren’t very interesting or exciting – usually I’m eating after the show, and it’s cold. But breakfast – I love sitting around the table with everyone and talking about the previous night over coffee.
If you could introduce Braid to a newcomer with just 3 songs, which songs would you pick?
BN: I’ll say “Please Drive Faster,” “Killing a Camera,” and “A Dozen Roses.” I think they are all pretty catchy and cover a few different moods.
If Weird Al covered a Braid song, what song do you think would work best, and what would the title be?
BN: Can Riot Fest please make this happen? I think “what a wonderful poodle” could be a thing. Or maybe “Never will Come for Gus” about, you know, a guy named Gus.
BONUS QUESTION (from Mark Rose, of Spitalfield): “If Braid was managing a Fantasy Football team together, what would your team name be?”
BN: Please Drive Faster (more points that way)

Frame & Canvas (25th Anniversary Edition)
Best New Reissue
By Ian Cohen
April 14, 2023
Don’t take it personally if the literal meanings within Frame & Canvas remain elusive after a quarter century: Braid themselves aren’t entirely sure what it’s about either. Five years ago, upon the 20th anniversary of their brilliant third album, singer/guitarist Chris Broach admitted he couldn’t make heads or tails of “Ariel,” while co-frontman Bob Nanna favored a kind of physical impressionism, the actual lyrics bearing little resemblance to the points of inspiration captured in its tail-chasing melody. The most narrow reading of Frame & Canvas plays up its importance by taking its title at face value, rendering it a snapshot of a very specific milieu: 1998 graduating class at the University of Illinois. The most accurate reading is what everyone outside of the world recognizes in its fitful dynamics and irrepressible exuberance: “a dream for the teens and in-betweens, and twenties yet unseen,” making “the leap” not to level up or climb the ladder, but rather to fly blindly into whatever comes next. It’s that last quality which makes Frame & Canvas the platonic ideal for what Midwest emo has to offer. The music is cerebral and introspective yet subject to unpredictable physical impulse; the musicianship is acrobatic but too jittery to reveal its virtuosity; the lyrics embody a sense of wanting to experience everything the world has to offer while trying not to be paralyzed by the fear of missing out on any of it. Frame & Canvas begins on an airplane, ends in a tour van, and spends its entirety in motion. The center of “The New Nathan Detroits” only holds if all four members charge at equal and opposite speeds. The chorus of “Collect From Clark Kent” sticks a seemingly impossible landing after consecutive backflips, emo’s equivalent to a Biles II . “I drink too much and you sing too much,” Nanna hyperventilates on a song called “Breathe In.” There are prettier songs, but no ballads: “Never Will Come For Us” and “I Keep a Diary” twinkle and sigh as the wheels keep spinning, Nanna watching vast stretches of anonymous America pass by, “as slow as Rapid City.”
Even Nanna’s lyrics refuse to stay in one place, words constantly nudging themselves into new shapes, the product of a fidgety mind forced to entertain itself through hours of idle time: “A cast of kittens, the cats we’ve been kissing,” “If deception is fine, then this is divine/Define divine,” “You’re moving like a movie.” All the while, outsiders try to alter the trajectory. Parents beg for a moment of reflection to consider the future, not just what lies ahead in the next week or the next college town. “When the boys want in/Boys will be boys/Boys will be poison boys,” Nanna warns on the prophetic “Urbana’s Too Dark,” the title alluding to a movement at the U of I to install more street lights as a prevention measure against sexual assaults. Friends urge them to ignore punk’s self-defeating ideals (“Let’s not settle for satisfaction/We are women and men of action/Let’s stop clapping, let’s start doing”), as there will be plenty of time to paint floors after we’re done naming the stars. “Collect From Clark Kent” memorably compares long distance romance to Superman getting trapped in a phone booth. The most memorable hook doubles as Braid’s modus operandi: Go!
These strengths were all loudly apparent in 1998 and every year leading up to this one. Upon this remixed and remastered 25th anniversary reissue, Frame & Canvas is not a Numero Group-style excavation nor is Braid experiencing an unexpected uptick in relevance aside from an obvious anniversary. Though the reputation of emo as a whole has fluctuated wildly since Braid first broke up in 1999, Frame & Canvas has been held in fairly constant esteem, perhaps more so than any album of its era other than Diary . So it’s fair to ask a question that should accompany any reissue that arrives without a wealth of unheard material: Why?
Though Braid had compiled a dozen indelible songs before they entered a studio, they were short on technical know-how and shorter on funds. This is exactly the kind of situation that led aspirational emo bands to work with J. Robbins during this era, but I’d argue his impact as a producer was more symbolic in 1998. Getting out of town to record in Virginia’s Inner Ear studios lent Frame & Canvas a legitimacy that their previous albums, Frankie Welfare Boy Age 5 and The Age of Octeen , lacked, putting Braid in conversation with Texas Is the Reason, the Promise Ring , and, of course, Jawbox . Between the playfully orchestrated combat of Nanna and Broach’s vocals and the cruel swing of new drummer Damon Atkinson, what were Braid if not a Dischord band without the hang-ups towards emo’s melody and sentimentality?
I’m not gonna lie and say I’ve compared the sound waves side by side; listen to the intro from both versions of “Killing a Camera” back to back and in the remaster, the drums are punchier, the bass louder, the sort of things I’d guess would happen if I simply raised the volume on the original. But throughout Frame & Canvas, there’s greater sense of space in the mix, more pronounced dynamics, more texture in Atkinson’s kinetic drumming, more opportunities to hear Broach creeping around the margins of any given verse before he barges in for the chorus.
If Braid seems like a band that carries more respect than influence, then Frame & Canvas argues that this is largely a result of their inimitability; it’s not easy to sing like Jeremy Enigk or come up with an American Football guitar harmony, but at least you know what to shoot for. Have you ever tried to play a Braid song on a solo acoustic? The more each individual member of Braid gets isolated on the remix, the more clear it becomes how inseparable they are from the whole. Their 2014 album No Coast —still the finest of the “revival”-era reunions—is perhaps the best evidence of this, as streamlined and immediate as anything from Hey Mercedes , but unmistakably more propulsive and vital. You can’t just chalk it up to Broach returning to the fold; 16 years after Frame & Canvas, he wasn’t even screaming anymore.
On the album’s first lyric, Nanna yelps, “1998 looked great on plain white paper,” rightfully assuming that their future was unwritten in spite of their best plans. Frame & Canvas was an unequivocal triumph, not just for Braid, but also for the Champaign-based upstart Polyvinyl Records and thus, the entire concept of Midwest emo. They subsequently toured with ascendant peers in Compound Red and the Get Up Kids and, later, Warped Tour icons All and Less Than Jake. Braid eventually made it to Japan and Hawaii by April 1999 and then broke up months later. “It’s pointless to play if you don’t get paid,” Nanna snarls on “The New Nathan Detroits,” and if touring wasn’t exactly pointless by 1999, it wasn’t sustainable either, mostly for the usual reasons—creative differences that would spawn Hey Mercedes and the Firebird Band , arguments about money and accommodations, regrets about putting relationships and education second. Yet, knowing how the story ends doesn’t mean the optimism and confidence of Frame & Canvas rings false. As much as it’s about Champaign or emo in 1998 or sleeping on floors, it’s an enduring testament to college grads recognizing the terrifying prospects of adulthood and still believing they can power through anything with the momentum of blind faith.

Braids announce 2023 tour dates

Canadian art rock band Braids have announced their first round of tour dates of 2023. Supporting their forthcoming album ‘Euphoric Recall’ (out April 28th on Secret City Records), the limited run of shows will be a special performance series featuring a string ensemble. It’ll include several dates in Canada, London, and their first US shows in over four years with stops in Los Angeles and New York City. For more information or to purchase tickets, click here .
05/27 – Los Angeles, CA @ Knitting Factory NoHo
05/30 – Toronto, ON @ Paradise Theatre
06/01 – Ottawa, ON @ Club SAW
06/02 – Montreal QC @ Society for Arts & Technology
06/04 – New York, NY @ Racket
06/10 – London, UK @ Kings Place Hall One
“ This upcoming concert series will be our most ambitious live shows yet, as we are joined on stage by string ensembles and immersive live visuals,” stated the band. “ Our new album Euphoric Recall sees us writing and arranging for strings for the very first time. As the album took shape we knew that we wanted to have the lush, cinematic textures of a real string ensemble. We set out teaching ourselves how to compose for strings – in the room all 3 of us throwing melodic and textural ideas back and forth – a real creative sandbox approach. Having the arrangements come to life in the studio was an absolute highlight for us and as we heard the songs elevated to new levels, we knew that we had to present a version of the live show with the full ensemble. These six shows, in some of our favorite music cities, will be the very first taste of that, and the first time we’ve ever played live with expanded orchestration. We have also been working with installation/digital media artist Nima Navab on creating immersive AI generated visuals to accompany our album. We’ve been sharing this over the past couple months online and it’s been fun to see people as intrigued by the uncanny visuals as we are. These immersive and sometimes overwhelming videos will even further elevate the shows into the most holistic presentation of our musical world. Over the past 10 years we have been lucky enough to play over 500 concerts all around the world, so we see this performance series as an exciting new journey for us. These will certainly be shows not to miss. We look forward to seeing you out there!”
A freer and wholly anew effort, ‘Euphoric Recall’ finds the trio abandoning strategy, burning it down, and realizing their love record. Love, all of it; the unbound bliss, the budding impulses, and the messy imperfections, a supernova swirled up in a suite of bold, melodic, symphonic pop songs surrendered to the present. The complexity of love and healing is not a new subject for Braids, but the vantage from which they see and sense it here is. Standell-Preston’s lyrics draw generously from her heart space, often writing on the spot, in just a few takes. Lines are vivid, exhilarating, and evocative, a directness indicative of fully knowing oneself and engaging the moment. As songs emerged, the rhythms and textures became brighter and looser, brimming with life. Written, recorded, self-produced, and mixed at Studio Toute Garnie, their Montréal studio, the music of ‘Euphoric Recall’ is both unrushed and urgent, lush yet captured with in-the-room clarity. Elements weave in and out, shading a rich universe without crowding it.
Pre-Order/Pre-Save ‘Euphoric Recall ’
Braids have teased several songs from ‘Euphoric Recall’ to date, including Apple and Evolution . The album’s first single Retriever is also out now, a luscious and meandering 9-minute journey that Stereogum raved “ builds and glides over an expansive runtime,” while Exclaim! stated “ the song is a sleek, bubbling odyssey that incorporated delicate drum machines and waves of metallic guitar.”

Canadian art rock band Braids announce 2023 North American spring tour with string ensemble
C anadian art rock band Braids have unveiled their first string of dates in support of their forthcoming album Euphoric Recall , and they’re doing something a bit different for these shows.
Announced on Thursday , Braids will embark on a trek across North America with the assistance of a string ensemble. The tour kicks off on May 27 at Los Angeles’ Knitting Factory NoHo, and it’ll feature stops in Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, and New York City. On June 10, Braids will bring the string ensemble performance to London’s Kings Place Hall One.
The band said this about their special headlining shows:
“This upcoming concert series will be our most ambitious live shows yet, as we are joined on stage by string ensembles and immersive live visuals. Our new album Euphoric Recall sees us writing and arranging for strings for the very first time. As the album took shape we knew that we wanted to have the lush, cinematic textures of a real string ensemble. We set out teaching ourselves how to compose for strings - in the room all 3 of us throwing melodic and textural ideas back and forth - a real creative sandbox approach. We’ve been sharing this over the past couple months online and it's been fun to see people as intrigued by the uncanny visuals as we are.
Tour dates can be seen below. Tickets are on sale to the general public right now here .
Euphoric Recall will be released on April 28th via Secret City Records. Pre-orders for the record can be made here .

See the best examples of underground Soviet-era architecture on a 1.5-hour walking tour of Moscows metro stations! With an expert guide at your side, visit five of Moscows must-see stations, including iconic Mayakovskaya , and learn all about Stalins visions for the former Soviet Union. Hear about the Metro-2, a secret line said to have been used by the government and Kgb , and see grandiose architecture, mosaics, sculptures and more!
Know More about this tour
Meet your expert guide outside the Kremlin and head underground with your Moscow metro ticket to discover the citys underground treasures. See the most interesting stations with extravagant Soviet-era architecture and hear the history surrounding the metro stations from your expert guide. Widely praised as one of Stalins finest architectural achievements, Moscow 's subway was created to symbolize his rising regime and a recognized empire. Learn about his successors, who later toned down the ornateness of the subways architecture, and see how the different eras are reflected in the character of each station. If you're lucky, you may even find the secret entrance to the unconfirmed Metro-2, a parallel underground system used by the government -- a mystery which has neither been denied nor confirmed today. Visit Revolution Square Station ( Ploschad revolyutsii ) and admire the 72 magnificent bronze sculptures that depict the people of the former Soviet Union, set underneath marble arches designed by the legendary Russian architect Alexey Dushkin. Another Dushkin-created station is Novoslobodskaya , and youll head here next to admire its dazzling stained-glass panels. Discover Baroque dcor, vaulted ceilings and chandeliers at Komsomolskaya Station, and then marvel at the grandiose and pompous design of Kurskaya Station -- one of the first stations to be built. Its design reflects Stalins communist ideals and youll note its left-wing slogans on the walls, next to mosaics that symbolize the victory of his regime over poverty and starvation. Finally, pay a visit to Mayakovskaya , the station thats named after Russian poet Vladmir Mayakovsky, and see why its often considered the most beautiful and iconic Moscow Metro station. Gaze upward at some 30 fascinating mosaics that depict Stalins vision for a bright Soviet future, and then admire the features of typical pre-World War II architecture that the station embodies. Your tour ends here.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:
From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.
At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.
According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.
The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.
Coffee Ring
The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.
Zodiac Metro
According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.
Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.
Paleontological finds
Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

- Moscow subway system is the 5th in the intensity of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).
