Queen Elizabeth II, The Duke of Edinburgh, King George VI, Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother and Princess Margaret are interred in the King George VI Memorial Chapel off the North Quire aisle.

History of St George’s Chapel

St George’s Chapel is located on the north side of the Lower Ward of Windsor Castle.  Work on the present chapel began when Edward IV was king, in 1475.  The east end, or Quire (choir), was completed by 1484.

The magnificent stone fan vaulting that visitors can see today was added by Henry VIII, shortly afterwards.  In 1528 the chapel was finally completed, with the fan vault over the crossing.

The chapel is the spiritual home of the Order of the Garter, one of the oldest and most important orders of chivalry in the world, founded by Edward III in 1348.

Every June the Sovereign and the Knights of the Garter attend an annual service of thanksgiving in St George's Chapel, known as Garter Day.

St George’s Chapel in Windsor

How to visit the Queen’s grave at St George’s Chapel in Windsor

Elizabeth II was laid to rest alongside her mother, father, sister and late husband Prince Philip

Huw Oliver

Getting a bit of déjà vu? Normal life in  London – and much of the UK – pretty much came to a standstill as the  Queen ’ s funeral  took place at Westminster Abbey last September. And today pretty much the same thing has happened.

The King’s coronation is in full swing at Westminster, with central London now pretty much on lockdown as royalists and curious people come to have a gawp at the new monarch. The whole thing is a bit weird, but definitely interesting. And it also may have you got feeling a little misty-eyed about our previous sovereign, Elizabeth II.

Her funeral last year culminated in a committal  service and private burial at the King George VI Memorial Chapel (part of St George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle) in the evening.  The Queen was buried  alongside her mother, father and sister. The body of her late husband Prince Philip was also removed from the Royal Vault to be laid next to Her Majesty. Now, a ledger stone has been laid and members of the public are able to visit her grave. Here’s everything you need to know if you want to pay your respects.

RECOMMENDED: Here’s the full schedule for the King’s coronation

Will you be able to visit the Queen’s grave at Windsor?

Windsor was said to be the Queen’s favourite home (even over Buckingham Palace) and is the longest-inhabited royal castle in the world. The property is estimated to be worth around £235 million.  But many have been wondering whether this means they will be able to visit Windsor to see the Queen’s t omb.

The general public are permitted to visit St George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle.  There are three services a day at the chapel, and worshippers can go to any of them. Outside of the services, visitors can visit on Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, but you have to pay. On Sundays, general visitors aren’t allowed but worshippers are welcome to attend the service. The chapel has a capacity of 800 people.

You can book your trip to Windsor Castle on the Royal Collection Trust website .

St. George's Chapel at Windsor: The Complete Guide

can the public visit windsor castle chapel

WPA Pool/Pool/Getty Images

St George's Chapel

The wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle at St George's Chapel, Windsor on May 19, 2018, has put this special church high on many a visitor's curiosity lists. Now that the prince and his American bride are moving to North America, there is even more interest in the places associated with them in the UK. Here is everything you need to know to plan a visit.

When he married in what is, in essence, the family chapel, Prince Harry walked down the aisle of the same church his mother, the late  Princess Diana , carried him to be christened.

Some of the other famous recent events in the chapel dedicated to St George, the patron saint of England, include:

  • The blessing of the civil marriage of Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles, now Duchess of Cornwall (a church wedding was ruled out because of their divorces, their very public adultery and public opinion at the time)
  • The wedding of Prince Edward, Queen Elizabeth's youngest son, to Sophie Rhys-Jones, now the Countess of Wessex. Peter Philips, Princess Anne's son, married Autumn Kelly there.
  • The separate funerals of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor (you may know them as Edward and Mrs. Simpson), both persona non-grata in Britain for more than 35 years (the Duchess for nearly 50 years) but accorded the rites of a former king and his consort (Edward's uncrowned reign lasted less than a year before he abdicated to marry divorcee Wallis Simpson).

Henry VIII and his third wife Jane Seymour, the mother of his only son, rest under the floor of St George's Chapel. So does the headless corpse of the doomed King Charles I. For more than 500 years, British Royals (and several of their German cousins) have been hatched, matched and dispatched at St George's, within the walls of  Windsor Castle .

A Quick History

The chapel is part of the College of St George, a religious community established by King Edward III in 1348, to worship together, offer prayers for the Sovereign and the Order of the Garter, to provide service to society and hospitality to visitors. The Order of the Garter, the oldest and highest British order of chivalry and the only one currently completely in the gift of the Queen, was founded in the same year. Apparently, Edward was inspired by tales of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table to set up his own chivalric order of knights.

Today, the college buildings, which include a prep school and apartments for the Military Knights of Windsor (similar to the Chelsea Pensioners), occupy a quarter of the buildings at Windsor Castle .

The chapel, the centerpiece of the college, was built between 1475 and 1528. First commissioned by King Edward IV, it was King Henry VIII who ordered the creation of the chapel's breathtaking fan-vaulted ceiling.

Processions and Weddings

Since its beginnings, St George's Chapel has been the home of the Order of the Garter. Its annual procession is held in June, when the knights (Companions of the Order of the Garter), parade in velvet robes and plumed hats, garlanded with glittering regalia and accompanied by all the rigmarole of medieval and royal pageantry. It is one of the highlights of the year at Windsor and fills the town with hundreds of spectators.

Crowds turn out for weddings of princes as well as secondary and minor royals and they've been doing that for decades. When Queen Victoria's eldest son, the Prince of Wales, later Edward VII, married the Princess Alexandra of Denmark, Queen Victoria watched unobserved from the Catherine of Aragon Closet (more about that below). While still a Prince, King Gustav VI Adolph of Sweden married Margaret of Connaught, Queen Victoria's granddaughter and daughter of her third son, Prince Arthur. Most of Queen Victoria's children and grandchildren launched their married lives here.

Things to See Inside

St George's Chapel is considered a masterpiece of Perpendicular Gothic, a late medieval style of English architecture. If you're not a specialist, a certain been-there-done-that exhaustion can set in if you look at too many medieval churches (easy to do in the UK). Instead, save your energy for inside. That's where you'll find the chapel's real wow factor. Make sure you allow yourself enough time when you visit Windsor to explore it. You'll see:

  • The intricate fan-vaulted ceiling, best viewed from the central aisle of the nave. A pivoting mirror mounted on ball bearings in the aisle allows you to look at this amazing ceiling without getting a crick in your neck or imagining you're falling upward into it. The ceiling was Henry VIII's addition to the chapel.
  • The West Window is   believed to be the third largest stained glass window in England. (The Great West Window at York Minster is the largest expanse of medieval stained glass in the world.) The window's 75 lights (or panels) were removed in 1940 to protect them from German bombs. They remained in storage for the remainder of WWII.
  • The Quire, where the carved wood paneling is medieval, houses the Garter Knights Stalls. Knights and Ladies who become Companions of the Order receive a stall in this chapel for life. Decorative stall plates are attached to the stall and a banner hangs above it. The stall plate remains after the member dies. So, even though there are only 24 members of the Order of the Garter at any one time, there are hundreds of colorful painted or enameled stall plates reflecting the order through hundreds of years. When he was installed, Prince William became the thousandth member.
  • The Oriel Window  aka the  Catherine of Aragon Closet is a secluded seat, shielded by a carved lattice, above the Quire. Henry VIII had it installed for his first wife, Catherine of Aragon so that she could watch the Order of the Garter service. When she was in mourning Queen Victoria often watched ceremonies - and even weddings - from here.
  • The Queen's Stall , an 18th century decorated box from which the Sovereign can observe services.

The Royal Tombs

Ten British Kings, along with their consorts are buried within St George's Chapel. Look out for:

  • The Tomb Henry VIII, Jane Seymour —his third wife—and Charles I , the king beheaded on the orders of Oliver Cromwell. Together with the infant child of Queen Anne, they are buried beneath a "Ledger Stone" in the central aisle of the Quire.
  • King George III,  who lost the American colonies in the American War of Independence, also buried in the Quire.
  • King Edward IV and Queen Elizabeth Woodville . If you've followed the series The White Queen or read the book The White Queen by Philippa Gregory , you'll have heard of Elizabeth Woodville. She was the mother of the Princes in the Tower, who may have been murdered on the orders of the wicked King Richard III. Edward and Elizabeth Woodville are buried in the North Quire Aisle.
  • The King George VI Memorial Chapel is the last resting place of the current Queen's parents, Elizabeth The Queen Mother, King George VI (perhaps you've seen The King's Speech ?) and the ashes of Princess Margaret, the late sister of the Queen.

How to Visit

Unless you are attending a church service, you can only visit St. George's chapel as part of a visit to Windsor Castle, Monday through Saturday. It is closed to visitors on Sunday however you can freely attend church services there. Worship services on Sunday and throughout the week are freely open to all. To attend, check the St George's Chapel website for the schedule of services. Then simply tell a guardsman at the Castle exit gate, just down Castle Hill from the main entrance. He or she will hand you on to an usher who can escort you inside.

Weddings & Funerals

In recent times St Georges Chapel has been the centre of attention for weddings and funerals alike. Most notebly the funerals of Prince Phillip on the of 17th of April 2021 and Queen Elizabeth the 2nd on the 19th of September 2022.

Also the weddings of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, Prince Edward and Sophie Rhys-Jones, Princess Beatrice & Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi and Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank.

A Royal Mausoleum

Windsor Castle began when William the Conqueror originally built a mound with stockade around 1070. The work was continued by Henry II who built a round stone tower and three outer walls. Henry III constructed the western end of the lower ward complete with a chapel on the site of today’s Albert Memorial Chapel. In 1348 the Chapel became central to Edward IV for the ceremony of the Order of the Garter.

Just as Westminster Abbey is a royal mausoleum so is St Georges Chapel. Amongst the most notable buried there are Henry VIII and Jane Seymour, and George V and Queen Mary. St George’s is a working entity, where daily services are held. Although the chapel is closed to general visitors on Sunday, services welcome worshippers

English Gothic Architecture

Saint Georges’ Chapel was a classic example of English Gothic architecture with its perpendicular style. By 1483 the choir aisles and roof had been completed. This was followed by a nave in 1496. However, the vaulting took until 1528 to be finished. The chapel undertook restoration work between 1921 and 1930. The lower ward now includes St George’s Chapel and the Albert Memorial Chapel in which George III, George IV and William IV are buried.

Treasures to Look Out For

One of the most striking features of the chapel is the intricate stonework of the choir screen. This masterpiece was created in the late 15th century and features delicate carvings of flowers, animals, and saints. The choir screen separates the Quire, which is where the choir sits, from the nave, where the congregation sits.

Another highlight of St. George's Chapel is the stunning stained glass windows. The windows date back to the 15th century and depict scenes from the life of Christ, the apostles, and the saints. The windows' intricate designs and vibrant colors are a testament to the skill of the medieval craftsmen who created them.

Visitors can look up above the choir stalls and see the insignia of the Knights of the Garter , helmets, banners and swords. Attached to the rear of the stalls are heraldic plates – a throwback to the heraldry of medieval court. Another notable tourist attraction is the west window containing 15th century stained glass.

In conclusion, St. George's Chapel is a stunning example of Gothic architecture and a testament to the rich history of the United Kingdom. With its intricate stonework, stunning stained glass windows, and cultural significance, a visit to this magnificent chapel is a must-do experience for anyone visiting Windsor Castle .

You'll then be ushered into the church, to take your seats in the quire in one of the stalls of the Knights and Ladies of the Order of the Garter . This is where the royal family will likely sit during the wedding ceremony.

Follow along with the choir with the handout provided, or simply spend the 45-minute-long ritual admiring the intricate fan vaulted ceiling and stunning stained-glass window, or trying to catch a glimpse of the grave of King Henry VIII, which lies in front of the altar.

The service takes place every night except Wednesdays. Get the full schedule here .

General admission is worth the price.

Evensong is lovely, but it's still worth paying general admission to see the rest of the castle grounds, the State Apartments, and the Semi-State Rooms. Admission generally costs £21.20 per ticket for adults (there are slight discounts for children under 17, students, and visitors with disabilities and those who are over 60), and it will take 2 1/2 to 3 hours to visit.

The castle is normally open every day, but as it is a working royal palace, sometimes portions of the Castle will close to the public. View the closure schedule on royalcollection.org.uk.

If you buy your ticket through the castle, it's valid for a full year.

Simply ask a warden to stamp it for you before you leave the site.

Order your ticket ahead of time .

If possible, book your tickets online, and have them shipped to your residence before you leave for Windsor. If you have your ticket in hand, you'll be able to skip some of the queues. That said, you will need to go through airport-style security before entering the castle for your visit.

Taking a tour can really enhance your experience.

Take a free 30-minute Precints tour to get a better perspective on the castle grounds. Or if you'd like an all-encompassing tour of both the town and the historic structure, consider booking an afternoon with a local professional Blue Badge tour guide .

How To Visit Windsor Castle in 2024: Tickets, Hours, Tours, and More

Angel Castellanos Last Updated: February 21, 2024

Historic fortress, royal palace, and family home, Windsor Castle is one of the official residences of the British monarchy and the longest-inhabited castle in the world. Located just outside London, it welcomes over a million visitors every year, so you’ll need to prepare for your visit. To help you out, we’ve prepared this guide with everything you need to know about how to visit Windsor Castle.

Pro Tip: Planning what to do on your trip to London? Bookmark this post in your browser so you can easily find it when you’re in the city. Check out our guide to London for more planning resources, our top London and Windsor Castle tours for a memorable trip, and the top things to do in London .

Visiting Windsor Castle: What We’ll Cover

If you’re planning a trip to London, you won’t want to miss Windsor Castle. You don’t have to love royalty to appreciate it. Any lover of art, history, or architecture will enjoy exploring this magnificent castle.

The state apartments have been open since 1848 when Queen Victoria opened them to the public. Various rooms are filled with priceless works of art by the old masters. St George’s chapel is one of the finest examples of the English Gothic Perpendicular style. The castle itself is also a testament to 11th-century Norman military strategy.

There’s a fascinating display of the different gifts to Her Majesty The Queen. This collection of foreign artifacts comes from the far reaches of the globe. Also, there are few places in the world where you can be surrounded by that many Holbeins, Van Dycks, and Reubens in just one room. Convinced? Here’s what you need to know about how to visit Windsor Castle.

Windsor Castle Opening Hours and Tickets

View of the tree-lined Long Walk leading up to Windsor Castle in England

Opening Hours of Windsor Castle:

The castle is closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays as well as on December 25 and 26. Opening times vary seasonally and many state occasions take place at Windsor Castle, so it could be closed to the public on short notice. It’s best to check the official website ahead of your visit.

  • From 1 March to 31 October: 10 am to 5:15 pm, last admission 4 pm.
  • From November 1 to February 28: 10 am to 4:15 pm, last admission 3 pm.

Opening Hours of St George’s Chapel:

St. George’s Chapel is a working church with a different schedule. For the most up-to-date information, and for times of worship or services, check the website.

Hours: The Chapel is open to ticketed visitors of the Castle Monday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. St George’s Chapel also closes early on December 23 and 24 at 1 pm.

Pro Tip: One of the best ways to experience the chapel is to attend a service. If you’re visiting on a Sunday, it’s the only way to see the chapel. You don’t have to be religious to enjoy the service. If you do attend a service in the chapel, line up 30 minutes before the service along with Castle Hill on the side of the Castle.

I was there recently on a Sunday and attended a Mattins service, which was mainly organ music and a capella singing. The music was divine and it made the Gothic architecture come alive. To see what my visit was like, check out the stories on my Instagram .

You can buy tickets either at the ticket offices on-site or online. We recommend booking tickets well in advance.

Admission: £28 per adult | £18 for 18-24 year olds | £15.50 Children 5-16 | Free >5

Family Pricing : £60.50 for 2 Adults and 3 Children.

Pro Tip:  Skip the line by booking your ticket online ahead of time or by joining one of our  small group tours of London and Windsor —you’ll get more out of your visit.

How Long To Spend at Windsor Castle

Short Answer: 2 hours.

You’ll need a minimum of 2 hours at Windsor Castle, but 3 hours is best. There’s a lot of ground to cover and it’s a lovely trip out of London. In fact, it would be a good idea to spend a whole morning at Windsor Castle if you have the time, so you can see it without rushing.

Pro Tip: The best way to approach the top things to see at Windsor Castle is to divide the castle into two geographical sections, the upper and lower wards. I like to see the State Apartments inside the castle first, then see St George’s Chapel in the lower ward afterward.

How To Get To Windsor Castle

The Windsor Royal station is an easy way to get to Windsor castle from London.

Windsor Castle is about an hour and twenty minutes west of London near Heathrow Airport. The small town around the castle is also called Windsor. You can easily get there by car, train, or bus (called a motor coach in the UK).

From Paddington station in Central London, take any GWR train (GWR) headed to Slough. Purchase tickets from a machine at the station or on the GWR train app. From Slough, take the next train to Windsor & Eton Central, a 10-minute train ride.

Exit the train station through a gallery of shops, and you’ll see Windsor Castle in front of you across the street. It is an easy 3-minute walk from the train station.

By Car or Bus (Coach)

It could take anywhere from 50 minutes to 2 hours by car, depending on London traffic and how long it takes to get out of the city center. If you’re driving from London to Oxford, Blenheim Palace, Stonehenge, or Highclere Castle (Downton Abbey), Windsor Castle is on the way, just on the other side of Heathrow Airport.

Pro Tip: If you do drive, get there early to find nearby parking. Parking fills up by noon.

Visiting Windsor Castle

What to see at windsor castle, how long to stay, best time to visit, tickets and tours.

Windsor Castle

Windsor Castle is one of three official residences of the Crown and has been home to the Sovereign for over 900 years.

The Castle is the largest inhabited castle in the world and the oldest in continuous occupation. The imposing towers and battlements of the Castle loom large from every approach to the town, creating one of the world's most spectacular skylines.

What strikes many people used to visiting historic ruins or attractions with a 'preservation' or museum like atmosphere is that Windsor Castle is in pristine condition and fully working.

There are around 150 people for whom Windsor Castle is their home. Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II was often in residence many weekends in her lifetime.

On this page we discuss your ticket options as well as how long you will need and details of what you will see at Windsor Castle including the Changing of the Guard. Please note St George's Chapel is shut to visitors on Sundays.

Windsor Castle tours remain ever-popular and good value if you want to combine into a top day out with somewhere like Stonehenge or Bath . There are loads of options to choose from.

Changing of the Guard and closures

Changing of the Guard happens between 11am and 11.30am also adding to the morning rush. Many of the coach tours will commonly stay until around midday departing after the Changing of the Guard.

On Sundays St George's is closed for religious services. Access to the Chapel may be limited after 13.30, particularly on Saturdays. It is recommended to arrive early to avoid missing out.

Lastly, the castle may close for state visits and special occasions so do consult the Windsor Castle official website . This also states the days during the winter when Changing of the Guard takes place and seasonable closing times.

It follows that if you're an independent visitor during the summer months, a good strategy is to visit the other attractions of Windsor & Eton during the morning and visit the castle after lunch. Visitor numbers are also much higher at weekends than during the week (and as such tickets for these peak times are now a little more expensive).

Windsor Castle location

Windsor Castle is very easy to find. Coming out from Windsor and Eton Central Station, or Windsor and Eton Riverside Station, the castle walls can be seen in front of you. The main entrance to Windsor Castle is at the top of Castle Hill, on the right. The address of Windsor Castle is Castle Hill, Windsor, SL4 1PD. Check Windsor Castle map location .

How long your visit will take and queues

During the winter months when there are no queues, the average visitor will take 90 minutes to two hours in the Castle, although the official Windsor Castle website suggest three hours or more.

At peak times during the summer there are often long queues to the entrance of the State Apartments.

Entrance, exits and security at Windsor Castle

Inside Windsor Castle

On paying your admission you pass through airline style security where bags are put through an x-ray machine and you empty your pockets and pass through a detector door. Once through the security you pick up your audio phone at the kiosk opposite.

There is an information desk, toilets and gift shop here too. By the audio kiosk is a sign that details the times of the guided tours that day. It is from here these tours start.

Please note, the exit is from the main Windsor Castle Henry VII Gate, not the entrance with the ticket desks.

Multimedia tours and photography at Windsor Castle

Multimedia guides.

A multimedia guide is part of the admission price, available in ten languages.

The tour is introduced by His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales and provides a lively commentary through the castle.

There is also a separate family multimedia guide for children aged 7-11, available in English.

You simply key in the number of the room or place you are in and a full commentary is given. There are many optional commentaries within some commentaries that go into great detail about individual items.

There are separate guides for those with hearing or sight loss.

In person guided tours

There are also classic guided tours that leave regularly from near the entrance on a schedule, and last around thirty minutes.

Photography

No photography or video recording is allowed within the State Apartments or St George's Chapel. Eating and drinking are not permitted in the State Apartments or St George's Chapel. You will be asked to place drinks and food in closed bags before being admitted to the castle. You can purchase bottled water at the Courtyard Shop at the beginning of your visit.

Changing of the Guard at Windsor Castle

Windsor Castle Changing of the Guard

Many visitors like to time their visit so they can view the Changing of the Guard. This is very similar to that practiced in central London at Buckingham Palace or Horse Guards.

Changing of the Guard at Windsor usually takes place at 11am within the Castle grounds Mondays to Saturdays from April until the end of July and on alternate days for the rest of the year, weather permitting.

If you're not visiting the Castle you can still see the band marching through the town around 11am. The barracks is about 500m from the castle, the band passes the Guildhall and Old Town before turning into the castle at Queen Victoria's statue.

If you're in the Castle, congregate in the parade ground by the main exit in front of St George's Chapel.

The whole thing takes around thirty minutes here.

State Apartments, Windsor Castle

Most people after getting their introductions and briefings about the castle on their tour will make their way past the moat of the Round Tower (not open to the public) up to the north terrace. It is here that the entrance to the State Apartments is situated.

From the north terrace you gaze down to Windsor town below and get far reaching views of the surrounding countryside. Windsor town looks much smaller from up here.

2019 restoration and opening of the State Entrance Hall

In 2019 Windsor Castle went through an extended period of restoration of the inner Hall, formerly closed to the public. The Inner Hall (closed by Queen Victoria) leads visitors to the State Entrance Hall, where guests of the Crown are welcomed to Windsor, a magnificent welcoming area.

From the Inner Hall Visitors can visit the State Apartments, Semi-State Rooms and Queen Mary's Dolls' House. The Dolls' House is precisely what you'd expect, a single miniature dolls' house suitable for royalty complete with miniature crown jewels.

Much of the southern part of the State Apartments was destroyed by fire in 1992 and has been restored. Arguably your experience is much the better for it; some of the rooms that were beginning to look faded and antique now really do bring alive what the original rooms would have looked like on completion.

Such are the treasures that you can perhaps look at an obscure painting only to realise that your are inches from an original Rubens when looking at the information on it.

St George's Chapel

St George's Chapel Windsor Castle

St George's Chapel is a working church with services every day. St. George's Chapel is open daily but closed to visitors on Sundays as services are held throughout the day. Worshipers are welcome to attend the services. The church also closes earlier than the rest of the castle to prepare for the evening service.

If you're entering the castle from early afternoon onwards it is worth making St George's your first port of call.

More recently, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's royal wedding was held in St George's Chapel. Another Royal wedding at Windsor followed shortly afterwards when Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank tied the knot in St George's Chapel.

Also within the chapel are the tombs of ten sovereigns, including Henry VIII and his third wife Jane Seymour, and Charles I. The Gothic architecture is particularly impressive, particularly the roof.

Perhaps most fascinating and differentiating the chapel from similar churches and abbeys is the Order of the Garter, the world's oldest national order of knighthood in continuous existence, with a history stretching back to King Edward III in medieval times.

Membership of the Order is extremely limited and includes the monarch of the United Kingdom, the Prince of Wales and not more than twenty-four companion members. St George's is home to the Order, as St. George is patron saint and also patron saint of soldiers and also of England. Members are each assigned a stall in the chapel choir above which his or her heraldic devices are displayed.

Windsor Castle is property of the Crown , meaning it is owned by the British monarch. Therefore, King Charles III took ownership of the Castle following the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

Who built Windsor Castle?

Windsor Castle was first built under the reign of King William the Conqueror. He chose the site as it was high above the river Thames and on the edge of a Saxon hunting ground. Building work began around 1070 and was complete 16 years later.

Later monarchs made changes to the Castle. Henry II converted the it into a palace in the late 12th century and replaced the timber walls with stone, while Elizabeth I built a long gallery overlooking the North Terrace and George IV raised the height of the Round Tower.

In 1992, a fire broke out in Windsor Castle which destroyed the ceilings of St George’s Hall and the Grand Reception Room, and gutted the private chapel, the State Dining Room and the Crimson Drawing Room. A Restoration Committee chaired by the Duke of Edinburgh began repairs immediately, and they were completed five years later to create the Windsor Castle that can be seen today.

How can I visit Queen Elizabeth II's grave? Windsor Castle set to reopen

The public will be able to see the final resting place of Queen Elizabeth II from next week.

A new ledger stone within the George VI Memorial Chapel, which sits within St George’s Chapel in the grounds of Windsor Castle , has been installed and bears the queen’s name.

The inscription on the ledger stone in the George VI Memorial Chapel also has the names of her parents and husband, Prince Philip, along with their years of birth and death.

The late monarch was laid to rest together with the Duke of Edinburgh on Monday evening in a private service attended by her son, King Charles III, and the royal family. This followed her state funeral at Westminster Abbey and committal service in Windsor.

The fresh stone now contains, in list form, “George VI 1895-1952” and “Elizabeth 1900-2002” followed by a metal Garter Star, and then “Elizabeth II 1926-2022” and “Philip 1921-2021”.

All four royals were members of the Order of the Garter, which has St George’s Chapel as its spiritual home.

When Prince Philip died 17 months ago, his coffin was interred in the Royal Vault of St George’s, ready to be moved to the memorial chapel when the queen died. The chapel is a pale stone annexe added on to the north side of the building behind the North Quire Aisle in 1969.

The queen's sister Princess Margaret, who died in February 2002, was cremated and her ashes were initially placed in the Royal Vault. These were moved to the George VI memorial chapel with her parents’ coffins when the Queen Mother died weeks later.

Windsor Castle is currently closed to the public and will reopen on September 29, giving the first opportunity to see the stone in person.

Before his premature death, George VI enjoyed a happy family life with his wife and two daughters, referring to the tight-knit foursome as "us four".

The death of the queen means that all four have finally been laid to rest together.

The Queen Mother, also called Elizabeth, was buried in the chapel on April 9, 2002, after her death aged 101.

A host of other royals are interred in the Royal Vault beneath the chapel.

Construction of the chapel, designed by George Pace, was completed in 1969.

It was commissioned by the queen as a permanent resting place for her father.

The king died aged 56 in February 1952 but his death had been unexpected and, as a result, no specific resting place had been allocated.

At the time, the king's remains were interred in the Royal Vault.

The Royal Vault is the final resting place of a long list of mostly 18th and 19th-century royals, including George III, who died in 1820.

With no more space to accommodate a second vault at St George's, it was decided that another chantry chapel would be built — the first addition to St George's since it was consecrated in the 15th century.

The queen rejected the idea of the traditional marble chest tomb with life-size effigies favoured by earlier royals for her father.

Instead, the king's grave was marked with a simple stone of black Belgian marble inlaid into the floor with the inscription "George VI".

The dedication took place on March 31, 1969, in a ceremony attended by George's widow Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, the queen, Prince Philip, Elizabeth's sister Princess Margaret and all four of the monarch's children.

The queen was finally laid to rest on Monday during a private evening burial service attended by close family only.

The family’s website said it was conducted by the Dean of Windsor. The website added: "The Queen was buried together with The Duke of Edinburgh, at The King George VI Memorial Chapel.”

It followed a simple committal service, which contrasted with the earlier state funeral. The queen's close staff were represented, including her senior dresser and personal adviser Angela Kelly, alongside people such as Earl Spencer, the brother of the late Diana, Princess of Wales.

It was heavy with symbolism with the Camp Colour from the military unit personally commanded by the Queen ― Queen’s Company, 1st Battalion Grenadier Guards ― placed on her coffin by the King.

Baron Parker — the Lord Chamberlain and a former MI5 chief, and the most senior official in her royal household — “broke” his wand of office by dismantling it into two halves and placing them on her coffin.

Earlier in the day, the state funeral at Westminster Abbey was attended by dignitaries including hundreds of heads of state. London was full with mourners for the event, which involved the largest policing operation undertaken by the Metropolitan Police.

Mourners will be able to visit the Queen's final resting place in St George's Chapel from next week when Windsor Castle reopens to the public after the royal period of mourning comes to an end.

People wishing to pay their respects to the late monarch, who was buried alongside Prince Philip in a corner of the chapel on Monday, can do so from September 29.

The Queen’s name has been inscribed on the ledger stone, which replaces a black slab set into the floor, next to those of her parents , George VI and Elizabeth, and Philip, in the George VI Memorial Chapel.

The stone now lists “George VI 1895-1952” and “Elizabeth 1900-2002” followed by a metal Garter Star and then “Elizabeth II 1926-2022” and “Philip 1921-2021” in gold lettering.

All four royals were members of the Order of the Garter, which has St George’s Chapel as its spiritual home.

The Queen’s sister Princess Margaret, who died in 2002, was cremated and her ashes were initially placed in the Royal Vault, before being moved to the George VI memorial chapel with her parents’ coffins when the Queen Mother died weeks later.

The Queen was laid to rest with the Duke of Edinburgh on Monday evening in a private service attended by the King and the royal family.

The intimate ceremony followed the splendour of her state funeral at Westminster Abbey and committal service in Windsor.

The chapel will reopen to visitors later next week on all days the castle is open to the public, excluding Sundays when it is only open for worshippers.

The royal family is continuing its period of mourning for the Queen until seven days after the funeral. Members of the royal family are not expected to carry out official engagements, and flags at royal residences will remain at half-mast until 8am after the final day of royal mourning.

King Charles had travelled extensively in the days after his mother’s death, as he toured the UK in his role as the nation’s new monarch but on Tuesday, he is believed to have flown to Balmoral, where the late Queen died peacefully on September 8, with the Queen Consort to grieve privately.

Queen Elizabeth II will be laid to rest in the King George VI Memorial Chapel, an annex of St George’s Chapel at Windsor. Here’s all you need to know about the historic building.

The exquisite St George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle is shaped by the British Monarchy, its hallowed walls radiating royal history and tradition.

Since the 19th century, it has been the chosen burial place for the Royal Family and has hosted manifold nuptials, including the wedding of Harry and Meghan , the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, in 2018.

Before that, from the 15th century, monarchs and their consorts were rarely interred at the castle, Westminster Abbey being the preferred royal resting place.

The spectacular late-medieval chapel took over 50 years to construct, dating from 1475 under Edward IV’s reign, to Henry VIII’s rule in 1528.

Today, it is considered one of the finest examples of the Perpendicular Gothic style in the country.

The chapel holds a great deal of royal history and tradition, both public and private. Situated within the walls of Windsor Castle, where Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip lived together, it has acted as a place of worship for Her Majesty and the Royal Family, and has hosted numerous royal weddings and memorials.

It is where The Duke of Edinburgh’s funeral, a private service for family and friends, was held, before he was laid to rest in the Royal Vault.

Following the death of Queen Elizabeth II, the Duke of Edinburgh will be transferred to King George VI Memorial Chapel, to lie beside his wife of over 73 years.

Kate Middleton and Family Won't Attend Easter Sunday Church with Royals amid Her Cancer News

In previous years, the Prince and Princess of Wales have attended the Easter service at St. George's Chapel in Windsor Castle

Kate Middleton , Prince William and their children will not be attending Easter Sunday church with the royal family this year.

Following the news that the Princess of Wales, 42, is undergoing cancer treatment, it's understood that the family of five won't step out for the service at St. George's Chapel in Windsor Castle this year for Easter, which falls on March 31.

Many royal fans were hoping to see Princess Kate at the outing. Upon announcing the news of her abdominal surgery in January, Kensington Palace said the royal "is unlikely to return to public duties until after Easter." However, the holiday church outing is considered a private family event rather than a royal duty, leaving many to believe she may attend.

Kate and Prince William, 41, regularly joined the holiday event with members of the royal family through the years.

In April 2023, the Prince and Princess of Wales brought all three of their children — Prince George , 10, Princess Charlotte , 8, and Prince Louis , 5 — to the service for the first time. For the holiday, the family coordinated in blue outfits, a color choice that was mirrored by King Charles and Queen Camilla for the church visit.

The last Easter service also marked the first time the family celebrated the holiday without  Queen Elizabeth , who died in September 2022 at age 96.

On Friday, the Princess of Wales shared a video message explaining that cancer had been found in post-operative tests following her "major abdominal surgery" in January.

She added that while she is in the early stages of preventative chemotherapy, the diagnosis came as a "huge shock." She expressed her desire to take time to inform her three children about what was happening before disclosing the news to the public. With their children now on break for the Easter holiday, it provides an opportunity for the Prince and Princess of Wales to spend time privately with their kids.

Kate also said in her message that having her husband there to support her has been "a  great source  of comfort and reassurance," as is the "the love, support and kindness" from the public.

The Duchess of York has said she is "full of admiration" for the Princess of Wales after the future queen announced she is being treated for cancer, adding: "I hope she will now be given the time, space and privacy to heal."

Sarah Ferguson, who was married to Prince Andrew and had daughters Beatrice and Eugenie with him, has made the remarks after Kate revealed her diagnosis in a video message to the nation on Friday.

The Macmillan Cancer Support charity has since revealed traffic to its online information and support pages were the highest seen on a weekend since the first COVID-19 lockdown.

The Duchess of York, who revealed in January she had been diagnosed with skin cancer, has posted on social media: "All my thoughts and prayers are with the Princess of Wales as she starts her treatment.

"I know she will be surrounded by the love of her family and everyone is praying for the best outcome.

"As someone who has faced their own battles with cancer in recent months, I am full of admiration for the way she has spoken publicly about her diagnosis and know it will do a tremendous amount of good to raise awareness."

Kate revealed in her video statement on Friday that she is undergoing preventative chemotherapy.

By Rhiannon Mills, royal correspondent

As a family they've been used to having to step into the spotlight. This is a moment when all the Princess of Wales wants to do is protect her children from it.

As the world processes the news of her cancer diagnosis, her message about the importance of family couldn't have been stronger. And is why we're all being asked to stop speculating about where they now are and leave them alone.

It can't have been easy for her to record it but the more you watch her message and other parts stand out, showing a different, more self assured side of Kate - who usually loathes public speaking.

Talking directly to others with cancer, she says: "Everyone facing this disease, in whatever form, please do not lose faith or hope. You are not alone."

There is a strength and poignancy to that final phrase that draws comparison with Queen Elizabeth II's rallying words to the nation during COVID, where she said "We'll meet again".

From this future Queen there is no sense of resentment after what must have been a gruelling few weeks. Since her announcement, the social media speculation of #kategate has been replaced by an outpouring of love and sympathy.

With messages from around the globe from some of the world's most famous and influential individuals, this is an acknowledgement of her incredible international status and how highly respected she is.

Throughout her surgery, diagnosis and further treatment, Prince William has been by Kate's side. And his wife is clearly in his thoughts as he's tried to keep going with his public engagements, regularly talking about her whether it was at a homelessness event in Sheffield or decorating biscuits at a youth club in London.

Going solo is something he's going to have to get used to for some time to come, with no clear idea of when we'll see the princess back on royal duties.

Tessy Ojo was with William for the Diana Award event less than a couple of weeks ago. The charity's chief executive, she's known him for the past 24 years and says his resilience is remarkable.

"I suppose we, with the benefit of hindsight, now knowing what was going on, it's huge, you know. It gives you a sense of how much they continue to honour service, what it means to them," she says.

"How he shows up, how they show up, despite all of the stuff that's happening.

She added: "I cannot emphasise enough how much we need to take a step back and allow this family to recover in peace."

He may be heir to the throne but like any partner trying to help their loved one through something like this, he will no doubt feel slightly helpless. A lot of what lies ahead is in the hands of the doctors, but from what I understand he does feel what he can do is really double down on his deep desire to protect his family's privacy.

It is Kate's response and her decision to tell us herself that has been particularly striking. She is a devoted mother, wanting to do the best for her family, and her inner strength is really coming to the fore.

The King is hoping to make an appearance at the traditional Easter Matins service next weekend, according to The Telegraph.

A Buckingham Palace source told the paper he would attend the annual service at St George's Chapel in Windsor if his health allows.

The monarch stepped back from public duties following his cancer diagnosis.

It's thought he was given medical advice to avoid the risks associated with large crowds.

"The King and Queen are hoping to attend some form of Easter service in Windsor," a palace source reportedly said.

"However, it will not be the large family gathering that we might expect to see in different circumstances."

By Jason Farrell, home editor

At Windsor this morning crowds lined the streets to watch the Irish Guards pipe and drum their way into the castle grounds to change duties with the Welsh guards. It was business as usual. The palace says constitutionally the same is true for the senior royals, even if there is a temporary changing of the guard.

The King is still holding audiences with dignitaries, but he has stepped back from public facing engagements and there is a sense of frailty in the royal household.

Former press secretary to the late Queen, Ailsa Anderson, says: "This is not a crisis, it's a bump in the road."

But she added: "It's very, very difficult obviously, and unsettling, because this is an institution based on stability and continuity, and you have two key players who are going to be out of action for some time."

The late Queen had to step up her duties when her father got cancer in the late 1940s. The disease accelerated her accession to the throne when he died aged just 56.

Queen Elizabeth II famously said: "I need to be seen to be believed."

How true that was of the Princess of Wales - whose disappearance from the public eye sparked a frenzy of conspiracy theories. Although she's addressed those with her sobering reality, she won't be back in the public gaze until medics say she's fit to go.

For now, she can expect public curiosity has been replaced with sympathy but clearly there is a lot on Prince William's shoulders.

He will want to spend as much time as possible with Kate and his three children, and will be with them at least for the Easter break. But with his brother abroad and to some degree estranged, and his uncle Prince Andrew relieved of duties, there's a dwindling pool of royal big-hitters available to hold the fort.

Constitutional expert Craig Prescott said: "There has been a sliming down. There has been more emphasis on a small number of royals. So when two are out of action that is perhaps a bigger issue."

Queen Camilla has become a key player. She delivered a speech written by the King on his behalf, on the Isle of Man this week, and next week she'll play his role at the Maunday Easter service in Worcester; a key royal fixture.

The remaining support team, Princess Anne and the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh, are likely to have more focus on them too. Even Prince Andrew was leading the family at a recent memorial service in Windsor when William needed to be with Catherine.

This isn't quite a crisis, but it is a test of resilience for the royals. They hope this is only a temporary situation, but what we've learned in recent weeks is that while they crave privacy in illness, the public craves information. Finding that balance is just one of many challenges ahead.

News of the Princess of Wales's cancer treatment came after weeks of speculation about her whereabouts. In her video message yesterday, she explained she had been taking the time to explain her diagnosis to her children.

If you're going through something similar, Macmillan Cancer Support offers this advice on how to talk to children about it...

The charity says while it can feel like telling your children will "bring home the reality of the situation", not explaining what is happening to them "may make them feel more vulnerable".

"Children often know when something serious is affecting the family and people they are close to. It is important to give them the chance to talk openly about their fears and worries," it said.

The benefits of letting them know can also include showing you trust them, helping you all to feel closer, and helping them cope better with difficult situations in life.

Macmillan says you will likely need time to cope with your own feelings first, so it can be helpful to speak to a nurse specialist, psychologist or counsellor.

When you are going to have the talk, it says to be as prepared as you can and make sure you have all the information you need.

"You may want to think about the questions a child might ask and the words you will use to explain things," it says.

Macmillan also encourages to think about where you will have the conversation - it should be somewhere your children are able to express their feelings.

"If you have more than one child, it is best to tell them together if you can," it says.

"This prevents them feeling like their siblings know more than them. If you are telling them separately, do it as close together as possible. Some children may wonder why they were told last."

It also advises to avoid only telling the older children as this can place a burden on them.

As a parent, you will likely know best how to approach and talk to your child, but it can be helpful to think about these things:

  • See the first conversation as a starting point – it is the beginning of an ongoing process of gradually giving your children small, relevant pieces of information and reassurance.
  • Allow the conversation to be directed by your children’s reactions and the questions they ask.
  • Listen and keep it as open as you can.
  • Try asking questions that encourage them to express what they are thinking, rather than a one word or two-word reply.

Macmillan says it is better to be honest and not to make things sound less serious than they are.

It is also fine to say if you don't know the answer to all of their questions.

Our correspondent Rachael Venables is in Windsor, which she describes as being a "beacon for royal watchers".

Although it's expected Windsor would have had a high level of support for the Princess of Wales, she says it has been "staggering" to see the amount of empathy for Kate.

Venables says she's heard well-wishes for the princess from "every single person I have spoken to", some of whom had gathered for the Changing of the Guard but others who came holding bunches of flowers for Kate.

Many say it has been a "real shame" how she was treated online.

Fellow mothers have commented on how they can understand the difficulty of explaining her cancer diagnosis to her children, Venables says.

Kate's message to the public about her surgery and cancer diagnosis was "almost unprecedented", a former press secretary to Queen Elizabeth II has said.

Ailsa Anderson said it was a "great idea" by whoever was advising the princess for her to film the statement.

"I do think that the princess actually delivering the message herself... you could see all her vulnerability, but also her strength in doing that. It was almost unprecedented I think," she told Sky News.

Asked if she believed Kate's cancer diagnosis, as well as that of her father-in-law the King, was a crisis for the Royal Family, Ms Anderson replied: "I think it is a bump the road rather than an earthquake.

"We have seen crises - we've seen abdications, we've seen executions, we've seen a civil war... this is not a crisis in my view."

Supporters of the Princess of Wales have been leaving flowers outside the gates of Windsor Castle today.

Sky News has been speaking to well-wishers at the castle today.

One woman told us she was "very shocked" but thought Kate "spoke brilliantly" about her situation.

Another said the princess has been "terribly open" and deserves privacy to recover.

We are a "long way" from a constitutional crisis in the UK despite the monarch and a senior royal figure both taking time off for health reasons, an expert has said.

Dr Craig Prescott, a specialist in UK constitutional law, said the King is still managing to carry out some of his duties "without any sort of delay or hazard".

The Princess of Wales, meanwhile, has less of a constitutional role and represents the King "more broadly through her work", he explained.

Her husband is a counsellor of state who could step in for the King to fulfil his functions if needed, he added.

Dr Prescott said: "If Prince William wasn't around, then maybe Princess Anne or Prince Edward could do it themselves. So I think we're a very long way from a constitutional crisis... a very long way from that indeed."

King Charles is ‘Hugely Frustrated’ by Schedule-Snarling Cancer Treatments

By Eve Batey

Britain's King Charles III

In an interview published Sunday, a member of the royal family provided a significant update on King Charles III’s cancer battle, and said that he’s eager to resume his official duties. The news comes from Peter Phillips , the son of Princess Anne and ex-husband Captain Mark Phillips .

Phillips spoke with Sky News Australia shortly before Catherine, Princess of Wales announced that she had also been diagnosed with cancer, the news agency says. The full conversation with the king’s nephew was broadcast on Australian television on Sunday.

Phillips, the first grandchild of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Phillip, was fifth in line for the crown prior to the birth of his cousins and their kids. (He’s now 18th in the line of succession .) “He’s in good spirits,” Phillips says of his uncle, who announced in February that he was undergoing treatments for an unspecified form of cancer.

Peter Phillips attended day 4, ‘Gold Cup Day’, of the Cheltenham Festival at Cheltenham Racecourse on March 15, 2024, in Cheltenham, England.

The king’s good mood is sometimes tempered by his desire to return to public life, Phillips says. “He is very pragmatic (and) he understands that there’s a period of time that he really needs to focus on himself,” Phillips says of Charles. “I think, ultimately, he’s hugely frustrated. He’s frustrated that he can’t get on and do everything that he wants to be able to do.”

This isn’t the first time Charles’s demeanor has been characterized as both “pragmatic” and “frustrated.” Sources close to the king shared that same sentiment with Vanity Fair last month, saying then that “The king is both pragmatic and optimistic," but is also “frustrated” by his diagnosis.

According to Phillips, Charles “is always pushing his staff and everybody and his doctors and nurses to be able to say ‘actually come on, you know, can I do this? Can I do that?’”

“So the overriding message would be that he’s obviously very keen to get back to a form of normality,” Phillips says.

Prince William and Kate Middleton Release First Joint Statement Since Cancer Announcement

By Jack McCordick

One goal for the king might be the family’s annual attendance at Easter Sunday services at St. George Chapel. It’s a longstanding tradition for the royals to attend Easter services at the Gothic chapel on the grounds of Windsor Castle.

This year, that tradition will be upended a bit: Kate Middleton and Prince William will not attend the March 31 services, nor will their children Prince George , Princess Charlotte , and Prince Louis . According to the BBC , “we do not expect to see or hear from the family” until after April 17, when the kids return to school from the current Easter break.

However, Charles is eager to “lead the family to church” that day, if his doctors allow. A Buckingham Palace spokesperson says they are “hopeful” he will be able to attend services, along with other members of the family.

According to Phillips, Charles’s patience with watching from the sidelines has nearly run out. “He’s probably frustrated that recovery is taking a little longer than probably he would want it to,” Phillips says.

Charles and Queen Camilla “would obviously love to see as many people as possible,” Phillips says.” They are very keen and very active to be able to, you know, be seen and meet as many people as possible from all walks of life.”

‘Preventative chemotherapy’ explained

can the public visit windsor castle chapel

Kate, the Princess of Wales, said Friday that she is in the early stages of  “preventative chemotherapy” for cancer  that was found following abdominal surgery in January.

Kate did not say what type of cancer doctors found, or how advanced it was. But cancer doctors say that, in general, preventive or, more specifically, “adjuvant” chemotherapy is quite common following  surgery that finds cancer .

“It’s almost like an insurance policy,” said Dr. Andrea Cercek, a gastrointestinal oncologist at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. “The person has had surgery to remove all the cancer that is visible, and then we give chemotherapy to try to eliminate or get rid of any remaining cells that might be in the body but are too small to be seen.”

Why Kensington Palace waited to go public with Princess Kate's cancer news

Molly Hunter

NBC News' Molly Hunter breaks down the reasons why Princess Kate may have waited as long as she did to share that she's undergoing treatment for cancer.

For one, Kate needed time to recover following major abdominal surgery in January that the palace said was planned.

Second, she has been processing the news of a cancer diagnosis with her husband, Prince William, as the pair comes to terms with what this means for the otherwise healthy 42-year-old.

And finally, perhaps most importantly, Kate was waiting for the right moment to tell her young kids about her situation to make sure they understood and that she is and will be OK. Notably, Kate wanted her kids to hear the news from her, not from media reports or the rumor mill.

White House reacts to Princess Kate news

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre offered thoughts on Princess Kate at her news briefing today.

“We just heard the terrible news,” Jean-Pierre said moments after Princess Kate's announcement.

“Our thoughts are with the Duchess of Cambridge and her family members and friends during this incredibly difficult time,” Jean-Pierre said.

She added that she wishes the princess a "full recovery" and joined the calls to respect her privacy during this time.

Jean-Pierre said she found out about the royal news the same way the public did and she didn't have anything to share regarding conversations between President Joe Biden and the royals.

“We are incredibly sad to hear of the news,” Jean-Pierre said. “We are taking this in, this terrible news, as all of you are.”

King Charles 'so proud' of Princess Kate for cancer announcement

King Charles III is "so proud of Catherine for her courage in speaking as she did," according to a spokesperson for Buckingham Palace.

The statement from the palace added that since Charles and Kate were in the hospital together earlier this year, Charles has "remained in the closest contact with his beloved daughter-in-law throughout the past weeks."

Charles and Queen Camilla "will continue to offer their love and support to the whole family through this difficult time," according to the palace.

He added that she and her family are "entitled to privacy" and that he is "heartened by The Princess of Wales' optimistic tone and her message of faith and hope."

U.K. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak reacts to Princess Kate's cancer announcement

Princess Kate’s surgery and withdrawal from the public eye led to speculation and conspiracy theories that spread across social media.

The royal rumor mill was sent into overdrive when a family photo of Kate and her children — released to mark Mother’s Day in the U.K. and in an apparent bid to end the speculation — was pulled by photo agencies.

As uproar grew, Kensington Palace said that Kate had edited the photo and apologized “for any confusion.”

In January, I underwent major abdominal surgery in London and at the time, it was thought that my condition was non-cancerous. The surgery was successful. However, tests after the operation found cancer had been present. My medical team therefore advised that I should undergo a course of preventative chemotherapy and I am now in the early stages of that treatment.

This of course came as a huge shock, and William and I have been doing everything we can to process and manage this privately for the sake of our young family.

As you can imagine, this has taken time. It has taken me time to recover from major surgery in order to start my treatment. But, most importantly, it has taken us time to explain everything to George, Charlotte and Louis in a way that is appropriate for them, and to reassure them that I am going to be ok.

As I have said to them; I am well and getting stronger every day by focusing on the things that will help me heal; in my mind, body and spirits.

Having William by my side is a great source of comfort and reassurance too. As is the love, support and kindness that has been shown by so many of you. It means so much to us both.

We hope that you will understand that, as a family, we now need some time, space and privacy while I complete my treatment. My work has always brought me a deep sense of joy and I look forward to being back when I am able, but for now I must focus on making a full recovery.

At this time, I am also thinking of all those whose lives have been affected by cancer. For everyone facing this disease, in whatever form, please do not lose faith or hope. You are not alone.

Watch: Princess Kate says she is being treated for cancer in video announcement

King charles has also been undergoing treatment for cancer.

King Charles III was also diagnosed with cancer and has been undergoing treatment, Buckingham Palace announced last month.

The palace has not specified what kind of cancer the king has or at what stage it was initially found, but the announcement that he is facing cancer was in and of itself a break with historical royal protocol, in which medical ailments were often hidden from the public.

Princess Kate asks for privacy for her and her family

In today's announcement that she is undergoing treatment for cancer, Princess Kate asked for “time, space and privacy” for her and her family while she undergoes chemotherapy.

"This of course came as a huge shock, and William and I have been doing everything we can to process and manage this privately for the sake of our young family," Kate said. "As you can imagine, this has taken time. It has taken me time to recover from major surgery in order to start my treatment."

She added that it has "taken us time" to explain what is going on to their three young kids — George, Charlotte and Louis — "in a way that is appropriate for them, and to reassure them that I am going to be OK."

Catherine, Princess of Wales, announced Friday in a video released by Kensington Palace that she has cancer and is undergoing chemotherapy.

Princess Kate announces she is undergoing treatment for cancer

LONDON — Catherine, the Princess of Wales, announced Friday that she was diagnosed with cancer and is undergoing "a course of preventative chemotherapy," breaking her silence after weeks of widespread speculation over the popular royal’s health.

The 42-year-old wife of  Prince William , Britain’s future king, was hospitalized for nearly two weeks at the private London Clinic after unspecified abdominal surgery in January, which the palace described as planned. She said she is "now in the early stages of that treatment."

The announcement did not specify what kind of surgery Kate underwent earlier this year, what kind of cancer she is being treated for, or at what stage the cancer was found.
