Ravn Alaska slashes workforce, raising questions about regional airline’s future

a man looks out a window at an airplane on a runway

Between Friday and Monday, Alaska’s biggest regional airline laid off 130 of its 400-plus employees.

At this point, the nine communities served by Ravn Alaska can expect fewer flights, though none of its destinations will be eliminated, a company spokesperson said.

The decision was unfortunate and driven by a lack of profitability on certain routes, Ravn Alaska CEO Rob McKinney said through the spokesperson. The privately held company has shared little else about the layoffs and impacts they will have on the rural Alaska communities it serves, or its three Lower 48 destinations under the New Pacific Airlines brand .

Unanswered questions about the future of the Anchorage-based airline abound.

“So everybody’s kind of on pins and needles,” said Alaska travel expert Scott McMurren.

He runs the newsletter Alaska Travelgram and has been following Ravn’s situation closely, including monitoring fares and routes. As of Wednesday, he had yet to see changes in Ravn’s schedules.

Jessica Caplan, a representative of the Ravn branch of the labor union Air Line Pilots Association, International, said in a post on the union website that the layoffs were “shocking and disappointing.”

“Even more surprising: management has not mentioned the layoffs in any communications with us,” Caplan wrote the day after employees were informed. “We are all impacted in some way when a layoff affects our fellow employees, our friends and their families, or us directly.”

She called for more transparency from Ravn management. She wrote that 22 pilots were among the 130 people laid off .

Her web posts were initially public, but are now password-protected for union members. Caplan declined an interview request and referred inquiries to a media contact who did not respond.

McMurren said whatever changes do come will hit Ravn’s rural destinations harder.

“So they have an outsized influence in the markets that they serve because, in addition to, you know, having the most traffic and so forth, they have the biggest planes,” he said. “The Dash 8-100 series seats up to 37 people.”

Smaller communities are otherwise mostly served by nine-seat planes, McMurren said.

“Think about places like St. Paul Island and Dutch Harbor and, you know, the communities that they serve: Cold Bay, Sand Point, St. Mary’s, Unalakleet,” he said. “And particularly St. Paul Island. They’re the only air carrier that flies out there on a scheduled basis.”

Michael Baldwin has lived in St. Paul, a Bering Sea community of about 400, for more than 40 years. He’s the school principal and superintendent, and also has a side gig offering island tours in his side-by-side. It’s an off-the-beaten path destination for birders .

“Yup, it’s the birding,” Baldin said. “We have a lot of birds out here that people pay good money to come see.”

During past airline shakeups , St. Paul has gone without regular service to Anchorage. The workaround, Baldwin said, was to fly to Dutch Harbor or Cold Bay, hope the weather held, then switch airlines to get to Anchorage.

“We really depend on that bigger flight,” he said. “There’s some days that we might have, you know, 15 people trying to get out of here.”

The reduced service can be especially problematic if someone has medical issues they’re trying to take care of, he said. Fewer flights also means fewer birders.

“It’s kind of going through the community, and we’re kind of worried about what’s going to happen, because when you lay people off, the next step is possibly cutting off services to places,” he said. “Whether that same schedule holds, keeps going the same, or they’re gonna change it again, we’re not sure.”

Baldwin just flew back to St. Paul from Anchorage on Tuesday. His original flight was scheduled as the layoffs were happening. The Ravn rep who called him didn’t explain why his flight had to be changed, but he said he assumed it was related.

For visitors with low vision, public lands offer more than meets the eye

Cathy Humphrey, Project Manager, Experienced Services Program

BLM’s commitment to increasing access to public lands isn’t just about expanding roads, trails, and other infrastructure. It also includes improving access for people with other challenges, such as by augmenting a trail with interpretive audio or Braille signs. Or adding physical aids, like a guide rope, for visitors with low vision to explore areas without assistance.

Alt Text: The photo shows a large metal sign with four braille panels interpreting the Superior Mail Arrow site on BLM land.

An estimated 6 million Americans experience vision loss and 1 million experience blindness. More than 1.6 million Americans with vision loss or blindness are younger than age 40. February is L ow Vision Awareness Month , the perfect time to get out on public lands and experience them with all your senses.

When asked about improving accessibility in ways that benefit those with visual impairments, Kirstin Heins, National Conservation Land Program Lead for BLM California offered, “That sounds like a great partnership opportunity, and we are super into creating or supporting something like this!”

BLM is working to identify additional opportunities to provide visitors with low vision a memorable experience on public lands. In 2022, the Anchorage School District reached out to Brian Janson, Education Technician at the Campbell Creek Science Center , to see if BLM wanted to work together to develop a field trip for a group of high school students with vision impairments. They met a few times, planning several activities that would be fun, educational, and boost everyone’s confidence.

“I wanted these kids, who rarely went out in nature, to see themselves as the kind of people who could use and enjoy these lands,” Janson said. “That’s the real reward.”

Here are a few other engaging opportunities and activities on public lands for our friends with low vision – and many others looking to expand their horizons – to enjoy:

  • Two remote historic sites in Wyoming’s Rock Springs Field Office — Superior Mail Arrow and the Overland School Interpretive Site —have Braille interpretive signs. One tells the story of concrete arrows serving as early navigation for pilots transporting mail. The other describes a stagecoach and wagon trail providing an alternate route off the Oregon Trail in the late 1800s.
  • A 20-minute audio tour describes three sites on the Yuha Desert portion of Juan Bautista de Anza National Historic Trail in California’s El Centro Field Office . The audio tour paints a picture of the area and its people, while describing Anza’s expeditions in 1775-1776.
  • The Piedras Blancas Light Station Outstanding Natural Area in California uses touch activities to enhance sensory experiences for their visitors. While the activity targets 4th grade students, all visitors can put their senses to work and experience something unique. They can pet animal pelts to feel the difference between otter and elephant seal fur; reach into a box to guess if it’s a starfish, urchin, or seashell by touch; or listen to audio demonstrations of sounds of different fog signals.

Photo shows 4 wooden boxes with holes cut in the front so visitors can put their hand in the box to feel what’s inside.

  • Another activity from the Campbell Creek Science Center in Anchorage, Alaska, is a listening activity, called Tuning into Birds . By teaming up with an experienced birder or downloading a birding app, visitors can learn to recognize birds by sound.

In addition to participating in activities involving touch and sound, visitors with low vision – and everyone else – can engage other senses while exploring public lands, including these ideas:

  • Taste – Research a local area’s First People and bring a picnic lunch with foods that Indigenous peoples traditionally ate such as corn, squash, and beans in the Southwest, or salmon and huckleberries in the Northwest.
  • Smell – Differentiate between different types of trees or between bark and needles. Describe the smells in an area – can you smell the plants, the soil, the weather, is there any water nearby?

As the photo of Stevie Wonder in the Bisti/De-Na-Zin Wilderness in New Mexico  demonstrates, the world is more than what we see. Listen to the wind, feel the sand beneath your feet, touch the rock formations, and smell the crisp desert air.

Alt Text: Photo shows black and white image of Stevie Wonder sitting on the ground touching a round rock.

“So many inspiring things are happening in the BLM now,” said Daniella Barraza, Interpretive Park Ranger in Alaska. “What improvements can we look forward to in the future?”

Here are the best places in Anchorage to watch the 2024 Iditarod ceremonial start

The 2024 Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race kicks off this weekend. Up first: the ceremonial start, which takes dog teams on a mini-tour of Anchorage, from bustling streets downtown to the end of the route at the Campbell Airstrip.

The ceremonial start begins at 10 a.m. Saturday near the intersection of Fourth Avenue and D Street downtown. Dog teams will take off in two-minute intervals for an 11-mile ride across town.

Here’s a list of prime viewing spots for ceremonial start spectators. Be sure to bundle up: The forecast is calling for a daytime high of 14 degrees on Saturday in Anchorage, with cloudier, slightly cooler conditions Sunday in Willow.

If you can’t make it in person, we’ve added information about livestreams at the bottom of this story.

1. Downtown

Come early to grab a key bleacher spot at the starting line or just hang out, talk with mushers, admire the dogs or eat a grilled hot dog and listen to the announcer count down each team’s departure. The most exciting spot on the ceremonial trail is the corner of Fourth Avenue and Cordova Street, where teams buzz around the soft, snowy turn at speeds that occasionally spill the sled and its rider — this is prime real estate.

2. Cordova Street and 16th Avenue

Now that the crowds have thinned out and the teams are out of the din of downtown, drivers are a little more responsive to fans who wish them good luck.

3. Chester Creek greenbelt

This is as intimate as it gets — some stretches are so quiet you can hear the dogs’ feet and runners of the sleds cruising along the snow in the distance. But it’s also close quarters along this trail, so be sure to give teams and drivers plenty of room to pass and, again, keep your dogs at home.

4. Goose Lake Park

This is tailgate central, where folks picnic and party while teams pass by. The environment is festive but definitely dialed back compared with the madness downtown.

5. Tudor Road overpass

Take your last urban chance to check out the dogs before they disappear into the woods — and traffic on Tudor Road in early afternoon is as urban as it gets around these parts. Just be sure to set up on either side of the overpass, not on the overpass itself; that space is reserved for the dogs.

6. Campbell Airstrip

These are some of the best in-Anchorage opportunities to see Iditarod dog teams running in their native setting. Excellent viewing is found along the forest-lined Campbell Airstrip, near the Campbell Creek Science Center and at BLM offices where mushers will pack for their trip to the restart in Willow. Parking in the area will be limited.

Livestreams will be available on the Iditarod’s official website , including a stream of the ceremonial start beginning at 9:45 a.m. Alaska time on Saturday and the official restart at 2 p.m. Sunday.
