I have an old iMac (2006) and I'm trying to keep it going. I have other much newer macs that run the current software but I am getting all these warnings that say that Safari, Chrome, Firefox all are not being updated and then I am also having problems opening up web pages because the browsers are too old. My question is, what can I use for a web browser on an older iMac? I can only get to MacOS 10.7.5

Hi, Mikebike125 I have 3 macs. Mac mini with Lion 10.7.5 is newest. My family works with it everyday. You can try Google chrome 49 (not supported but run well) Firefox 48 Opera (last version for Lion). Safari will have problem with tls, you can't open sites like Wikipedia (I'll try resolve this problem on Snow Leopard) More rare browsers: Vivaldi, Roccat, Sleipnir, SeaMonkey, Avira Scout...Some chromium forks (Citrio, Epic) And special: Arcticfox, Newmoon, Basilisk, Firefox Legacy (for Lion). There are work and updated regularly

Please, have a look at Firefox Quantum (based on FF 67) ported to Lion and Mountain Lion . Fast and responsive.

These custom / tweaked Waterfox Classic builds by slapyourhoe are working quite well on Lion and Mavericks. I tried to stomach using a new Windows 10 system and after 30 minutes, I just can't do it because of its intrusiveness. It's either Mavericks or Windows 7, so praying browsers keep getting updated.

Nope... It's not working. But I copied usr in last step. Need to re-add certificate?

Using Mac Ports for Lion, you can get the latest (July 2020) build of WebKit2 targeting GTK, and through that a couple of GTK-based browsers are available, including GNOME Web (aka Epiphany) and Midori. I am still in the process of resurrecting Lion on an old iMac to test them out (its default operating system is currently Linux where all the current major players are fully supported), so I cannot (yet) personally speak to their usability. Depending on your local system's configuration, and the availability of prebuilt packages, these options might take quite some time to compile on your local machine. And they will tend to have the look and feel of a GTK application rather than going out of their way to feel like a typical Aqua application.

2. Download and install Mac OS X Lion

To upgrade from Mac OS X Tiger 10.4 or Mac OS X Leopard 10.5, first upgrade to Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6, then upgrade to Mac OS X Lion 10.7. If you are unable to upgrade, see How to create a bootable installer for Mac OS X Lion below.

To upgrade from Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6, download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 followed by Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5 .

Safari downloads the following installer as a disk image named InstallMacOSX.dmg. Open the disk image, then open the .pkg installer inside the disk image. It installs an app named Install Mac OS X Lion. Open that app from your Applications folder to begin installing the operating system.

Please allow installation to complete without putting your Mac to sleep or closing its lid. During installation, it might restart and show a progress bar or blank screen several times. You might find it easiest to begin installation in the evening so that it can complete overnight, if needed.

  • Mac OS X Lion 10.7 can upgrade Snow Leopard

3. Stay up to date

To get the latest features and maintain the security, stability, compatibility, and performance of your Mac, it's important to keep your software up to date. Apple recommends that you always use the latest macOS that is compatible with your Mac.

If your Mac isn't compatible with the latest macOS, you might still be able to upgrade to an earlier version, such as Catalina, Mojave, High Sierra, or El Capitan.

How to create a bootable installer for Mac OS X Lion

You can use an external drive or secondary volume as a startup disk from which to install the Mac operating system. These advanced steps are primarily for system administrators and others who are familiar with the command line.

What you need to create a bootable installer

  • A USB flash drive or other secondary volume formatted as Mac OS Extended, with at least 8GB of available storage
  • A downloaded installer for Mac OS X Lion

Download Mac OS X Lion

  • This downloads as a disk image named InstallMacOSX.dmg. On a Mac that is compatible with Lion, open the disk image and run the installer within, named InstallMacOSX.pkg. It installs an app named Install Mac OS X Lion into your Applications folder. You will create the bootable installer from this app, not from the disk image or .pkg installer.

Use the 'asr' command in Terminal

  • Connect the USB flash drive or other volume that you're using for the bootable installer.
  • Open Terminal, which is in the Utilities folder of your Applications folder.
  • Type or paste the following command in Terminal. This assumes that the installer is in your Applications folder, and MyVolume is the name of the USB flash drive or other volume you're using. If it has a different name, replace MyVolume in this command with the name of your volume.

After typing or pasting the command:

  • Press Return to enter the command.
  • When prompted, type your administrator password and press Return again. Terminal doesn't show any characters as you type your password.
  • When prompted, type Y to confirm that you want to erase the volume, then press Return. Terminal shows the progress as the volume is erased.
  • When Terminal says that it's done, you can quit the app and eject the volume.

Use the bootable installer

  • Plug the bootable installer into a compatible Mac that is connected to the internet.
  • Press and hold the Option (Alt) ⌥ key immediately after turning on or restarting your Mac.
  • Release the Option key when you see a screen showing your bootable volumes.
  • Select the volume containing the bootable installer. Then click the up arrow or press Return.
  • Choose your language, if prompted.
  • Select Install Mac OS X from the Utilities window, then follow the onscreen instructions.

Office for Mac 10.7.5

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to help a colleague who wants to run MS Office on his Mac version 10.7.5 (or MacOS 10.7.5). I thougth he needs MS Office 2011 (for Outlook 2011), but when I'm looking for buying this version, it's not possible anymore. My question: Is this version the right software for the Mac he has? Is it right that the Office version 2011 is not longer available?

Thanks already for sharing your experiences ;-)

Not sure whether 2011 still supports 10.7.5, but I believe that if you get an Office 365 subscription, it allows you to download and use Office 2011 "for older computers".  Corentin
