Our long-term BMW 3-series Touring: the eight-month verdict

► CAR’s long-term 3er Touring ► Ben Barry runs this petrol estate ► Check out our regular reports

Our long-term 330i Touring arrived before 2020 imploded, and back then its 2.0-litre turbo four made it the punchiest petrol 3-series estate, yet it boasted just 254bhp. Its departure coincided with BMW’s announcement that this G21-generation would be the first Touring to be blessed with an M3 derivative, and given how much I’ve enjoyed running the 330i, a much faster one with similar versatility seems an enticing prospect. But don’t get too envious if the 330i is your limit, because it still makes a strong case for itself.

The key has been its mix of practicality, reasonable economy and desirability mixed with a good helping of dynamic fairy dust – the generous 500-litre boot easily swallowed all our kit, and the interior gave adults plenty of space in the back, let alone kids. This 3-series has a 41mm longer wheelbase than the last, and it’s used wisely. The leather seats were plush yet sporty and low-mounted, the quality high and the technology generally first rate – though I disabled lane-keep immediately for being too risk-averse, found the sat-nav entry a little over-sensitive, and the novelty of Gesture Control quickly waned, so it was iDrive and buttons for me. (Gesture Control is part of the £1900 pack that also includes Harman Kardon audio and a head-up display that I liked, so it’s not a simple case of deselecting it.)

I’d definitely option M Sport Plus, because there’s no doubt the £2200 extra spiced up the BMW’s dynamics – with its adaptive M suspension, M Sport differential and uprated braking, it’s more responsive and playful than the previous model, if not with the outright delicacy of an Alfa Giulia. I liked that it was available only in rear-wheel drive.

The trade to all this dynamic prowess has been a firm if far from unpleasant edge to the ride quality, so I did most of my driving in Comfort mode, though Sport’s tauter body control definitely came into its own when only the driver’s seat was occupied.

I would have loved for the 330i to be a six-cylinder, like olden times, partly for the sound and because the Touring’s extra weight does give the 254bhp motor more work to do. BMW’s answer is the M340i xDrive Touring, which slots neatly between 330i and M4, and has a much sweeter six-cylinder soundtrack than the 330i four, a healthy 369bhp and – if my experience with the previous 440i Gran Coupe is representative – not a huge trade-off in mpg compared with the four-cylinder motor. Naturally the M340i’s a whole chunk more expensive than our £40,170 330i at £51,780.

But what’s this? It just so happens my next long-term test car gets a silky turbocharged straight-six BMW engine. I’ll reveal more next month, but there’s no question the 330i whips it in the all-round stakes – this Touring’s been a great car, and I’d happily buy one to replace our own ageing 320i Touring. Maybe one day I will.

Month 7 living with a BMW 330i Touring: our sort of Ka

3 touring ford ka

The 330i proved worthy of the motorsport paddock this month, as support car when I got a drive with four others in the 12 Heures du Norfolk and the EnduroKa championship – a budget series with a grid full of, yep, Ford Kas. Sadly our car/Ka retired after the first couple of hours (before I could climb aboard), so it was a long weekend of two return journeys to Snetterton and two full days mostly waiting. The 330i’s comfort and decent mpg made the journeys easy, the comfy cabin made it easy to settle down to work on the laptop, and there was plenty of space in the back while suiting up for the race that never was. On to Oulton Park…

Price £39,670 (£48,495 as tested) Performance 1998cc turbocharged four-cylinder, 254bhp, 5.8sec 0-62mph, 155mph Efficiency 38.7-39.8mpg (official), 29.7mpg (tested), 163g/km CO2 Energy cost 18.2p per mile Miles this month 1253 Total miles 6435

Month 6 living with a 330i Touring: this or a McLaren?

Necessary evil Heading to Silverstone to collect a McLaren, fuel up a few miles from home. 330i tank takes 59 litres of unleaded every 400-430 miles or so. Fuel economy hanging around 30mpg so far, against 39mpg official. Then again, lockdown’s meant shorter, more inefficient outings.

Here we go Roads south of Uppingham are favourites, with a nice, quick flow. I call up my pre-set Sport Individual setting: Comfort steering and chassis (though I often dabble with Sport chassis in twistier bits), Sport Plus powertrain, then loosen stability control’s shirt button and add manual gearshifts. 330i is enjoyable, plenty quick enough, nice and chuckable if no sports car.

3 touring silverstone

Resist! Resist! Ah, Silverstone. No laps today, just a meeting. Afterwards, I set the sat-nav, a reminder that BMW’s largely good iDrive infotainment is atrocious when it comes to inputting addresses. I lose five minutes after I accidentally activate the touch-sensitive top of the dial I’m trying to twirl to select letters and numbers. Cue Basil Fawlty best-of rant.

Slipknot again Underlying firmness to BMW’s ride on 19s (the trade for this being a more aggressively sporty model than its predecessor) and it’d be nice to quieten the road noise at a 70mph cruise, but no doubt the price you pay for firmer bushings and precision. Easily drowned when I’m alone and can crank the music, but family have commented on road-din before (and don’t do Slipknot).

Dinner’s in the dog McLaren 720S has almost three times the power of the BMW but it’s only 107kg lighter – and just you try inserting 500 litres of anything in its boot and carrying more than one passenger. And don’t get me started on mpg, benefit-in-kind, servicing… But the long way back? Oh go on then.

Month 5 living with a BMW 330i Touring: wife, meet mistress

3-series old vs new

The 330i’s arrival made us a two 3-series Touring family, giving me a chance to delve deep into what a decade’s development has brought.

I won’t argue my 2009 320i Touring is better, but there is a lot to like. The design has matured well, it’s still a comfortable, spacious car, and it’s currently enjoying an Indian summer of having shed all its value, still being perfectly good to use, but having enough ‘patina’ to make us feel carefree if never careless when using it. Decent enough mpg, cheap maintenance by a garage that’s within walking distance – there’s much to be said for this.

The obvious difference between the two cars is size: the new car is 188mm longer, putting it halfway between a 10-year-old 5-series and my 320i.

Inside, there’s a substantial increase in space for the new car, particularly in the back, plus analogue clocks have given way to a digital dash and an optional gesture function that lets you twirl thin air to adjust volume. Much of this technology is first class, though it’s striking how much harder the buttons for headlights and temperature control are to find than the old car’s dials.

It’s also a smarter, plusher cabin with standard leather trim, but I continue to be fond of the old-timer, which shares its successor’s low-set driving position and sense of purpose from behind the wheel. I bought it five years ago from Marshall in Nottingham, who delivered it with four spare alloys shod with winter tyres in the boot; a nice surprise (less so the badly repaired hail damage on the roof).

The 320’s drive is a bit underwhelming: iffy electric steering in the early days of BMW’s adoption of the technology and uninspiring four-cylinder 170bhp powertrain saved by a nicely balanced chassis.

320i interior

The new 330i is far better dynamically, as well as being more spacious and loaded with useful tech. Despite having only 80bhp more and being around 150kg heavier, it delivers comparable low- to mid-30s mpg and feels much brisker. It is stiffer and, I think, suffers more road noise at motorway speeds (though I’m rarely on the motorway in the 320i), a trade-off for this being the tauter, more precise driving machine. Nonetheless, living with them back-to-back, the new 330i is obviously better when judged on every single metric.

The new car also doesn’t break down. We had the 320i under extended warranty for as long as possible, at about £350 a year. For three years it worked perfectly, from 50k to 80k miles. In the fourth year we used the car about half as much, and started working through well known coil-pack failure issues, had an injector replaced, and a broken spring due to a man-sized pothole. That probably paid for most of the warranty. Then just before the warranty expired last year, the diff went. It cost the warranty company over £2k.

Price £39,670 (£48,495 as tested) Performance 1998cc turbocharged four-cylinder, 254bhp, 5.8sec 0-62mph, 155mph Efficiency 38.7-39.8mpg (official), 30.5mpg (tested), 163g/km CO2 Energy cost 18.2p per mile Miles this month 403 Total miles 4531

Month 4 living with a BMW 330i Touring: owning every road

‘Probably the best car in the world, but we’ll have to drive it in the UK to be sure!’ If it’s often true, it’s also a road-test cop-out that must irk many readers. So the best news: I’ve lived with the 330i Touring for four months now, driven it only in the UK and it’s damn good.

Those road-test cop-outs usually refer to how a car rides nicely on smooth European roads, but might fare less well on the UK’s artillery-shelled network. Well, the 330i Touring is in M Sport trim with 19-inch alloys and adaptive dampers, and there is a firmness versus my last-gen 440i long-term test car, and some unnecessary chop if you go so far as Sport mode, never mind Sport Plus, but in Comfort I’ve no complaints.

The upside is sharper handling compared to the already very good previous model, because BMW went all out to fend off upstarts like the Jaguar XE and Alfa Romeo Giulia. The steering feels sharper, the body better managed as it settles in to a curve where the
440i would briefly topple, and because you can now spec a limited-slip diff, the rear end is more precise if you give it a bootful from slower corners.

I’d sacrifice some of the impressive 34.5mpg that the 2.0-litre turbo four managed this month for more performance and refinement, but a 340i is significantly pricier (it starts above £50k as a Touring) plus the punchiest four-cylinder turbo is smooth and quick enough for the most part.

The Touring doesn’t sparkle over a great road like the Renault Megane Trophy I recently handed back, but I enjoy driving it very much, and then it swallows all our luggage and shopping and gives the whole family the space, comfort and technology we need like few performance cars could.

An Audi RS6 would ace the lot for loads more cash, but it’s that sweet spot again, and the more I live with it, the more I realise a 330i Touring hits it – no matter where you drive it.

Price £39,670 (£48,495 as tested) Performance 1998cc turbocharged four-cylinder, 254bhp, 5.8sec 0-62mph, 155mph Efficiency 38.7-39.8mpg (official), 34.5mpg (tested), 163g/km CO2 Energy cost 16.5p per mile Miles this month 414 Total miles 4128

Month 3 living with a 3-Series Touring: configuration time!

3-series LTT individual mode

Some cars don’t need an Individual driving mode, but the 330i really benefits from the few minutes it takes to set it to your liking. It’s too dozy in Eco or Comfort, bit gnarly in Sport for daily driving, and Sport Plus is pure racetrack stuff. So I’ve dialled in my perfect setting.

Sport damping is pretty stiff, so it’s Comfort for the suspension. Comfort steering is too limp, Sport Plus too heavy, so Sport it is. Then it’s Sport Plus for the engine (crisper throttle, better noise), and Sport for the transmission. I use manual gear selection via the paddles, so there’s no issue with it hanging on to gears too long. Wonder how many customers never touch any of it?

Price £39,670 (£48,495 as tested) Performance 1998cc turbocharged four-cylinder, 254bhp, 5.8sec 0-62mph, 155mph Efficiency 38.7-39.8mpg (official), 32.3mpg (tested), 163g/km CO2 Energy cost 17.1p per mile Miles this month 1024 Total miles 3714

Month 2 living with a 3-series Touring: coming from behind

3-series LTT boot

Quick cost-benefit analysis of a 3-series estate versus saloon to ramp up excitement this month. Touring benefits include 500 litres of luggage space with rear seats up, against 480 litres for a saloon. You also get a standard electric tailgate (optional on saloon, if pointless), that brilliant opening rear window and four rubberised longitudinal ribs in the loadbay, which actually rise up slightly when you close the tailgate, so shopping doesn’t slip when rear tyres do. Subjectively, I prefer the design too.

A Touring is £1500 costlier and 125kg heavier, with the weight impacting fuel economy by 1mpg and the 0-62mph by a tenth. I feel the effect on midrange urgency more than I notice the altered handling. The Touring’s bodyshell can’t be as rigid as the saloon’s, but it gets a bespoke suspension tune.

Pros and cons, then, but there’s something so very satisfying about the do-it-all practicality of a Touring that makes benefits outweigh costs for me.

Price £39,670 (£48,495 as tested) Performance 1998cc turbocharged four-cylinder, 254bhp, 5.8sec 0-62mph, 155mph Efficiency 38.7-39.8mpg (official), 32.9mpg (tested), 163g/km CO2 Energy cost 17.1p per mile Miles this month 503 Total miles 1494

Month 1 living with a BMW 330i Touring: back on the estate

3-series LTT side

The first long-term report I filed for CAR was in 2006, when I’d taken over the mag’s E91 330i Touring. It was metallic blue with cream leather, equally creamy straight-six and a ride that turned every B-road into Belgian pavé – blame early runflat tyres for that. But that car made quite an impression: soon after I entrusted my new family to an E46 320i Touring for four years, and we’ve been running an E91 320i Touring for almost six now.

The kids are probably sick of them. But almost 14 years since that first story, I’m excited to be once again running a 330i Touring, this time the new G21 – now the second generation of 330i to use a four-cylinder turbo. With me a serial BMW owner, you could argue this 330i is pushing against an open door. Equally, though, it’s got – ahem – large boots to fill.

Sensible hat on, it’s possible to justify choosing petrol over diesel, because the 330i has a healthy 254bhp, 38.7-39.8mpg, and benefit-in-kind of 31 per cent, which compares very favourably to those diesels. The 318d/320d four-cylinder turbodiesels cost only £2k/£1k less, offer 100bhp/60bhp fewer horses, and no benefit-in-kind incentive. Okay, so they do 50mpg or so, but then diesel is pricier per litre.

The 330d is more tempting with its smooth six-cylinder motor, but it’s almost £4k pricier, only around 3mpg more efficient and just a whisker more potent, has inferior C02 and is heavier. Though, yes, torque is a big 428lb ft win (a 330i’s 295lb ft matches the 320d).

Even if the figures hadn’t stacked up quite so well, I’d have still been drawn to the most powerful petrol in the line-up (though the 340i Touring comes on stream soon).

The 330i cost £39,670 in our M Sport trim. Our test car dials up the driver focus with the £2200 M Sport Plus package, which includes 19-inch alloys, adaptive M suspension, and the limited-slip diff – the first one BMW has offered on non-M cars. M Sport Plus also includes uprated brakes for lesser models, but they’re already standard on a 330i.

The remainder of this car’s £8040 of extra kit goes on the £1900 Technology Package (head-up display, Harman Kardon hi-fi, gesture control, wireless charging, wi-fi), £500 Vernasca leather with blue stitching, the £1900 Premium package (panoramic sunroof, electric seats with driver memory and lumbar support), and the Comfort package (heated steering wheel, keyless access, extra cubbyholes for £890). And we have the £650 Parking Assistant Plus with its 360º camera.

All in that’s £48,495, and highly desirable it all seems. We’ll be putting both the car and those options under the microscope over the coming months.

It may not be the only wagon in the mid-size prestige segment, but could BMW’s 330i Touring be the best?

BMW 3 Series M Sport 2.0L Wagon RWD 2019

What we love

  • Spacious and versatile boot
  • Punchy engine performance...
  • ...but subtle enough to live with as a daily drive
  • Impressive and functional technology

What we don't

  • A few small trim items let the overall presentation down
  • Abrupt start/stop system
  • Fidgety urban ride

Mid-range, mid-sized, yet anything but middle of the road, the 2020 BMW 330i Touring is both polished and practical. As the sole 3 Series wagon for the Australian range, it’s also likely to be a rare and treasured beast.

The basics are much the same as the 330i sedan that came before it. You get a new platform underpinning the car, a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine producing 190kW and 400Nm, eight-speed torque converter automatic and rear-wheel drive.

Stats that are almost BMW staples by now. The difference, most obviously, is at the rear where the long-roof version lauds superior cargo capacity and flexibility over its sedan counterpart.

While the sedan boasts 480L of boot space, the wagon can claim 500L to the top of the rear seats. Of course, that’s not a huge difference on paper. But the ability to load taller, bulkier items comes into its own, and with the rear seats stowed there’s 1510L of cargo volume at your disposal.

Getting into the more practical 330i comes at a cost, however. A 330i sedan asks for $71,990, while the Touring has a list price of $75,990 plus on-road costs with the most recent bout of MY20 price shuffling.

You do still have the no-cost option of either Luxury Line or M Sport (as tested) equipment packs, too.

Thus, for the 330i M Sport Touring tested here, standard equipment includes three-zone climate control, proximity key with walk-away lock and push-button start, a colour head-up display, wireless phone charger, power-adjustable front sports seats with leather trim, powered tailgate, LED head and tail-lights, auto lights, wipers and anti-glare mirror.

The interior itself is pleasantly spacious. For the longest time, mid-size European cars always offered decent front seat space, but could feel slightly restrictive in the rear. In this newest generation, the 3 Series has grown, and now there’s enough space to bundle in full-sized adult passengers without impinging on knees or feet.

Width might still be tricky, but for two adults or two child seats there’s sufficient space. There’s also a touch more head space easing entry and making it the choice of taller passengers.

On the M Sport-ier side of things, adaptive M suspension, an M-honed body kit, M Sport brakes, 19-inch alloy wheels and BMW’s relentlessly thick-rimmed M Sport steering wheel are also included.

The real equipment talk has to centre on BMW’s interior. A 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and 10.3-inch infotainment screen with touch, console controller and conversational voice inputs delivers clear and usually concise information.

Individual preferences may differ, but I think BMW could do more with its instrument display to allow personalisation. The overlapping information of some screens can feel cluttered at times, too, while the anti-clockwise tachometer makes little sense from a brand once famed for its driver-centricity.

BMW 3 Series

Wireless CarPlay (but no Android Auto yet, promised to be coming soon), AM, FM and digital radio, Bluetooth phone and audio streaming, a wide sweep of online weather, traffic, news and concierge services, integrated navigation and 32GB of internal storage make BMW’s iDrive quite comprehensive – to the point where many owners may not delve into many of the available functions.

The safety score, in an official capacity, is five stars as rated by ANCAP in 2019. BMW includes lane-departure warning with lane-keep assist, lane-change warning, steering and lane-control assist, autonomous emergency braking, front and rear cross-traffic alert, speed sign recognition including speed limit assist, a surround-camera system with 3D View and six airbags.

It’s not the healthy equipment list that makes the 330i such a good thing, though, but rather the cohesive way in which everything goes together.

In and around town, there are no real qualms about what you get. The engine is spry when you need it to be, but linear and progressive when you don’t. The 330i Touring is a smooth and quiet operator most of the time, and the way BMW has set up its eight-speed automatic means you’re rarely left wanting for an expected downshift or more performance should you have a sudden need to call upon it.

Other changes engineered into the current-generation 3 Series mean you also get nicer ride and handling than the previous-generation model. Conspicuous M Sport branding may be present, but the 330i isn’t an unrelenting sports car, though it has been tweaked and tightened slightly.

The lowered adaptive suspension errs on the firm side, but is mostly balanced. It seems to fidget right when you'd most like it to settle, in the 40–60km/h range of residential and city streets, which is less than ideal.

Traditionalist BMW owners might lament the four-cylinder engine note, too, whereas the 330i badge of yore signified a more sonorous six-cylinder note.

There are genuinely not too many flaws to signal in the 330i Touring, however. We’ve had trouble with iDrive’s wireless CarPlay in the past, but this time things worked as intended.

I’ve called out BMW’s modular interior design for not looking special enough in cars like the 7 Series and Z4, but in the more conservative 3 Series the design approach feels more appropriate.

On the downside, there’s an overuse of dull black plastics concentrated around the main switch block on the console, which stands out against an otherwise classy interior. It avoids the garish showmanship of something like a Mercedes-Benz C-Class, but misses the mark slightly in a $75K car. It's also a bit rough that the fake leather wrapping the dash of this test car is a $950 option, when it really ought to be a regular part of the 330i experience.

There will, of course, be cars that handle better, perform with greater zeal or fit more inside, be that people or possessions. They’ll come from within BMW’s own range, if not competitors, and will be rewarded with higher scores as a result.

In terms of balance, though, the 330i Touring feels just right. Large enough to fit a family, but not so big as to feel cumbersome. Endowed with engine outputs that make for a performance car zeal on the weekend, but sensible enough to get through the week quietly and frugally.

Ownership is made more convenient with available BMW Service Inclusive prepaid maintenance programs, which start from $1650 for five years including scheduled filters, fluids, and spark plugs with service intervals suggested by the car’s onboard diagnostics (though you’ll usually be given an annual reminder).

Warranty is the prestige average three years with unlimited kilometres, putting BMW’s premium product behind most mainstream brands in Australia with longer coverage terms.

Official figures for fuel use are 7.0 litres per 100km. While we didn’t match that in the real world, the 9.0L/100km figure shown is still decent for a car saddled with a week of heavy-slog commuting and still capable of a 5.9-second sprint to 100km/h should you feel the need.

To help keep fuel use down, there’s the now typical engine start/stop technology that shuts the engine down at a standstill and re-fires to accelerate. Among the few gripes found with the vehicle, the agricultural shudder that ripples through the car as the system does its thing stands out as a refinement sore point.

Unfortunately for the 330i Touring, like its long-roof counterparts from Audi and Mercedes-Benz, it will only enjoy a small market niche with the much more popular X3 SUV range offering similar tech, space and performance in a package broadly considered more appealing by most purchasers.

Which makes this car an inside secret for traditionalists and automotive enthusiasts. One that embodies some of the charm of BMW’s past strengths, without neglecting any of the modern technology or equipment demanded of the modern age.

Spacious, user-friendly, subtle but still enjoyable for the driver, adding a wagon rear to the already impressive 330i only serves to extend its appeal.

Richard Berry

The BMW 330i Touring M Sport is the most BMW of all BMWs. I don’t need to convince you of this, because you’re here and obviously a believer, too.

But, if anybody dares to doubt this claim, at say a wedding reception or your daughter’s graduation, before you spear tackle them, just remain calm and remind them of the following.

Draw their attention to the fact that not only is it a 3 Series - the bestselling BMW model in Germany - it’s a wagon and not an SUV, which means it doesn’t handle like an elephant who’s had its legs replaced by wheels, and so stays true to the whole  BMW 'Ultimate Driving Machine' ethos.

Then hit them with your secret weapon. Not the nunchucks, put those back under your seat. No, tell them about how the 3 Series Touring was invented by a dad working at a BMW plant in Germany who just wanted to take his family away on a holiday.

Max Reisbock is his name. He was an engineer with BMW during the early 1980s and found that with two kids he needed something with a big boot for all the gear that goes with a family on holiday.

So, he took a wrecked 3 Series and worked on it after hours modifying it into a station wagon . He didn’t really want BMW to see his finished Franken Beemer but when they did the idea of his family truckster was stolen… I mean… liked so much it was scheduled for production as the 3 Series E30 Touring in 1987 and became the first BMW station wagon.

Now 33 years later I’m reviewing the seventh-generation 3 Series and the sixth iteration of the Touring.

In this review I’ll cover what the 330i Touring M Sport is like to live with as a family car, what features it comes with, and how thirsty the petrol engine is.

I'll also investigate how it compares to an SUV (such BMW's own X3 ) for practicality and driveability, as well as how it competes on price against rivals such as the Audi A4 Avant and Mercedes-Benz C-Class Estate .

Is there anything interesting about its design?   8/10

The latest generation BMW 3 Series arrived last year and to anybody who’s not really into cars it looked just like the previous model had been served up, but it’s completely new inside and out.

Like its 3 Series sedan sibling the latest Touring has brought some significant styling changes. There’s the wider kidney grille, the more angular headlights and the tail-lights have taken on a hockey stick shape.

The 3 Series Touring is more elegant than Mercedes-Benz’s C-Class Estate.

For the first time since Max Reisbock’s E30 wagon the 3 Series Touring doesn’t have a 'Hoffmeister Kink' – the boomerang-shaped forward curve to the C-pillar.

Nope, that rear-side window has had its curve replaced with angle. The change is small but my eye is so used to seeing that stretched rounded corner that this straight-edged new one looks awkward (similar to the same window on a mid-’90s 5 Series Touring ).

That each 3 Series is bigger than the last is now just one of those things we accept and expect. In the past the growth has seemed subtle, but this time, to my eyes, the Touring looks huge.

The dimensions show it to be 4709mm end-to-end, 1827mm wide and 1440mm high, making this seventh-gen 3 Series Touring 76 mm longer, 16mm wider and 8mm taller than the previous model.

Our test car was a 330i Touring M Sport, which meant it came with a few aggressive styling touches such as an aero kit and 19-inch M light alloy wheels . The 'Davit Grey metallic' paint provided the perfect urban camouflage.

The 330i Touring wears 19-inch alloy wheels.

Inside the 330i Touring shows off BMW’s new-generation cockpit, complete with a virtual (digital) instrument cluster, large integrated media display and leather upholstery with aluminium trim.

It’s a modern and super stylish cabin but for BMW fans it will still be familiar with that traditional centre console treatment.

The Touring is more elegant than Mercedes-Benz’s C-Class Estate, but to my eyes Audi’s A4 Avant pulls off the tough, little wagon look better,. Then, outshining all the luxo wagons in the style stakes is the Volvo V60 .

Allianz

Does it represent good value for the price? What features does it come with?   9/10

The 3 Series 330i Touring M Sport lists for $70,900 and for that you get leather upholstery, three-zone climate control, an auto tailgate, a head-up display, proximity key, power front seats, auto parking, plus a 12.3-inch virtual instrument cluster and a 10.25-inch media display with sat nav .

Then there’s the M Sport gear such as 19-inch alloy wheels, the body kit, the M Sport leather steering wheel and adaptive M suspension.

The 330i Touring shows off BMW’s new-generation cockpit, complete with a virtual (digital) instrument cluster, and large integrated media display.

Is it good value? Yes, but there are a few items which you may have expected to be standard, such as heated seats, which were optioned on our test car ($700) along with a heated steering wheel ($400), a 16-speaker Harman/Kardon stereo and the ($5589) 'Visibility Package' which adds the metallic paint, sunroof, laser headlights and ambient lighting.

Audi’s A4 Avant 45 TFSI Sport and Mercedes-Benz C200 Estate cost about the same, but the BMW feels the most modern and pips the others on value.

How practical is the space inside?   8/10

The father of the 3 Series Touring, Max Reisbock, would have swapped his home-made BMW wagon in a split second for this new version, and being larger than the previous model, cabin space has also increased.

That said, rear legroom behind my driving position isn’t too generous for me at 191cm tall, and I had only a finger’s width of room between my knees and the seat back.

Rear legroom behind my driving position isn’t too generous for me at 191cm tall.

Cabin storage is good with enormous door pockets in the front, decent sized rear ones, plus four cupholders, but the centre console bin is on the small side.

Power outlets are in good supply with a wireless charger, plus two USB ports and a 12-volt outlet in the tray in front of the shifter, while for those in the second row there are two USB-C ports and a 12-volt outlet.

Being larger than the previous model, cabin space has increased.

The 330i Touring doesn’t come with sunshades or privacy glass in the rear, and I wasn’t happy about putting my young son back there on long trips during this blistering summer Australia's just had. We were thankful, though, for the climate control and directional air vents in the back row.

The cargo capacity of the boot is 500 litres , which is 50 litres less than a BMW X3. Is the 3 Series Touring as practical as an X3 SUV? Nope, and it’s not just about the boot size, but also from an entry and exit perspective.

Boot space is rated at 500 litres.

See, while the 3 Series’ large rear doors open wide, nothing beats an SUV's ease of access, for putting kids into their car seats and even for the less mobile adults climbing in and out.

Just as a reference: the 3 Series sedan’s boot is 480 litres, but is nowhere as accommodating as the wagon’s cargo area with its large tailgate opening and a removable parcel shelf which opens up the entire rear of car when the seats are folded flat.

Scooters, BMXs, doonas, holiday gear, shopping, boogie boards were all swallowed up by the Touring’s boot – Max would have been proud.

What are the key stats for the engine and transmission?   8/10

The 330i has a four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine making 190kW/400Nm, and drive goes to the rear wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission .

Under the bonnet is a four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine producing 190kW/400Nm.

Personally speaking, BMW’s straight six turbo is the stuff of dreams, but this four can throw the 330i from stationary to 100km/h in 5.9s, which is brisk enough for most.

Stay up to date with the cars guide weekly newsletter

How much fuel does it consume   7/10.

BMW says the 330i Touring should use 7.0L/100km over a combination of open and urban roads. After 190.3km of my testing on motorways and suburban school runs the trip computer was reporting 12.6L/100km .

What's it like to drive?   8/10

SUVs are so popular and fill up so much of my testing timetable that piloting the 330i Touring felt like I was literally sitting on the road, both in terms of visibility and dynamics.

Okay, so you aren’t going to have the high-up commanding position as you would in an SUV (although if everybody has an SUV doesn’t it defeat the towering-above purpose?), but the handling you get in exchange is grin-inducing.

Yep, there’s no wobbly, no top-heavy sensation and no slow-geared vagueness in steering that tends to go with SUVs. Instead, the 330i Touring feels un-tippable with sharp and quick steering.

This family alternative to an SUV is low, fast and different to the rest of the over-fed herd.

That turbo-four isn’t the in-line six I prefer, but it’s still responsive, smooth and powerful, while the eight-speed shifts seamlessly.

Warranty & Safety Rating

Basic Warranty

3 years / unlimited km warranty

ANCAP Safety Rating

ANCAP logo

What safety equipment is fitted? What safety rating?   9/10

The 3 Series Touring was given the maximum five-star ANCAP rating when it was tested in 2019, scoring high marks for adult occupant protection.

An impressive array of advanced safety technology on the 330i includes AEB , lane departure warning and lane keeping assistance, rear and front cross traffic alert, 'Evasion Aid', 'Crossroads Warning' with braking, rear collision prevention, auto parking , surround view camera and adaptive cruise control .

There are eight airbags on board, two ISOFIX mounts and three top tether points. No spare wheel though – just a puncture repair kit, which is disappointing. Nothing beats a full-sized spare wheel when it comes to getting a flat.

What does it cost to own? What warranty is offered?   6/10

The 330i Touring is covered by BMW’s three-year/unlimited kilometre warranty , which is the same duration as Benz’s and Audi’s coverage, but falling short of the five-year warranties offered by mainstream brands.

Servicing is condition-based, meaning the car will tell you when it needs to be serviced through a message which will appear on the instrument cluster.

While there is no capped price servicing , BMW does offer the Basic plan for $1650 for five years/80,000km.

The 330i Touring is not as practical as an SUV such as a BMW X3 in that it’s not as spacious nor does it have the cargo capacity. Then there’s the low ride height which was a pain in the back for me as a tall dad trying to strap kids into their car seats. That said, the 330i is far more practical than the 330i sedan with its tailgate and boot opening, while retaining all the sedan’s superb dynamic ability and performance.

While I’m still adamant the 330i Touring is the most BMW of BMWs, if it was today that Max Reisbock was looking to take his family away on holiday, he would have chosen an SUV rather than a station wagon.

Say what you will about BMW’s obsession with launching SUVs of all sizes and shapes to cash in on the segment’s boom, but it still knows how to make a great wagon. Catering to a shrinking market that doesn’t think sport utility vehicles are the solution to everything, the 3 Series Touring recently got a Life Cycle Impulse bringing mild changes on the outside and the iDrive 8 on the inside.

The adjacent video focuses on a 330i in xDrive guise, but if you don’t really need all-wheel drive, BMW will happily sell you the Touring in RWD flavor. Painted in Mineral White Metallic and equipped with the optional M Sport Package , the posh family car looks the part. It has the 50 years of M anniversary badges and Shadowline upgrades to black out the kidney grille and other body surfaces.

bmw 330i tour

The gasoline-fueled wagon is sitting pretty on 19-inch wheels with a dual-spoke layout and a two-tone design. As with most 3 Series LCI videos we’ve seen recently, this is a high-spec configuration featuring a panoramic sunroof and adaptive LED headlights. The red brake calipers provide a contrasting effect, and we could say the same about the glossy dark trim pieces on a white body.

If you’re not too fond of the styling changes brought by the LCI , rumor has it that BMW will update the car’s styling yet again in the following years. It is believed that all cars manufactured from July 2024 will get mild cosmetic changes, which will come along with an optional illuminated front grille. The engines are expected to be tweaked to meet Euro 7 standards and also comply with stricter US regulations.

The G21 is expected to remain on sale until early 2027 or two additional years than originally planned. Consequently, the G81 M3 Touring will also benefit from an extended shelf life. That means you have plenty of time to buy the long-roof 3 Series in the current format. Despite the Neue Klasse’s arrival in 2025 with an electric 3 Series, the next-gen 3er will retain its CLAR platform and combustion engines.

2023 BMW 330i Touring Review – The Wagon for Everyone

bmw 330i tour

Want a BMW 3 series wagon but find the M3 Touring a little too rowdy for your liking? Well, you’d be glad to know that the BMW 330i Touring is also available for sale in Singapore.

It trades the former’s S58 3.0 litre inline-six power plant for a B48 2.0 litre four banger. As such, power is also down from the M3, with the 330i outputting 242 bhp versus its M sibling’s 503 bhp.

bmw 330i tour

But this is a classic case of less being more, as having a lower power output actually works in favour of the G21’s chassis.

bmw 330i tour

BMW 330i Touring Specifications

Powertrain: 2.0 litre Turbocharged Inline-4 Output: 242 bhp, 400 Nm 0-100km/h: 6.1 seconds Top Speed: 250 km/h Efficiency: 13 km/l Dimensions: 4,713 mm x 1,827 mm x 1,440 mm Wheelbase: 2,851 mm

No Enlarged Kidney Grilles

There’s also another reason to buy a 330i Touring over an M3 Touring. If you are not a fan of the enlarged kidney grilles fitted to newer BMW models, you’d be glad to know that the Bavarians have not equipped this car with said grilles.

bmw 330i tour

The front end looks more conventional, and is likely to appeal to a wider audience. All of the swage lines work cohesively with one another, and the svelte rear quarters actually fits the rest of the design better than the flared ones on the M3.

All locally delivered 330i Touring models will come fitted with the M Sport kit. And no, you are not able to purchase a 330i in any other bodystyle but as a Touring.

A Well-Sorted Cabin

The 330i Touring has all of your usual BMW mod cons fitted to it. Though that isn’t unexpected, considering this car is almost $400,000 (at the time of publishing). It comes with BMW’s iDrive8, which consists of a 12.3 inch digital display, and a 14.9 inch touchscreen for the infotainment system. Both are housed in a singular curved glass housing.

bmw 330i tour

Three different themes can be set on the former depending on the driving mode. The latter comes fully-equipped with all the tools you need for a seamless experience (think wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay). Climate settings are also accessible via the touchscreen only, though hotkeys make it less hassle than it could have been.

On the inside, I found sufficient head and knee room even in the second row. The Sensatec material used to trim the cabin feels supple, and is certainly premium-feeling. Front occupants are treated to a pair of seats that strike a good balance between offering comfort and support.

This is perhaps the performance underdog of the 3 and 4-er lineup. Don’t get me wrong – the M3 Touring is superior on a performance front in every metric. But then you’d expect that, seeing that it comes with the fabled ‘M’ badge.

bmw 330i tour

And the B58-equipped M340i would probably also run rings around the 330i Touring too. But again, with an already-legendary engine under the bonnet, having a degree of potency on the move is to be expected.

So you wouldn’t expect an innocuously badged BMW wagon to be as competent as the 330i is. The four-banger has sufficient power and torque, and you can actually use most of the revs all of the time without fear of going vastly over the posted speed limit.

bmw 330i tour

Without AWD, the 330i Touring feels lighter on its nose too. This also positively affects its steering feel, which is more natural and responsive than in the M3 Touring. Despite it having skinnier tyres than its M3 brethren, it still feels agile and I never once felt like the tyres or the chassis lacked any sort of traction. And whilst it doesn’t have the rowdy burble of its inline-six stablemate, the 2.0 litre engine can hold its own in a sound-off too.

Truly The Wagon for Everyone

It is fast and fun enough to satisfy the desires of the car guy, whilst being economical enough that it wouldn’t put a massive strain on your finances. Space inside is great even for a family of four, and the wagon form factor adds some additional practicality too.

bmw 330i tour

Car enthusiasts will also appreciate the shooting brake aesthetic, and the subtle touches such as the openable glass hatch for even greater levels of accessibility. Looks and feels good, and doesn’t cost you a ridiculous amount of money to keep on the roads – if you are looking for a wagon, this is one car that you should seriously shortlist!

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.
