Honolulu Hawaii Experience 7D/6N

I had a great time in Honolulu. The accommodation was good, rooms were basic but clean. The 4 day trips (mornings, latest return was 2.30pm) were really good, although some left pretty early which meant missing the included breakfast (good pancakes but no other options) 3 out of 6 days. Also worth noting that the Ocean Voyage tour at Kualoa Ranch (beautiful place and really good!) pick up was at 7.15am at a hotel 40mins walk away at the other end of town, then bus back wasn't til 1pm. Long day for a 45min boat ride so might be worth looking into other activities there too. Overall everything went according to plan and I had a great time, but as expected this would be a good bit cheaper to book everything yourself.

A fantastic tour! Our guide, Pat, was great. Really went out of her way to get us all the excursions we wanted. Our favorite part was the whale watching. I highly recommend doing this tour in the winter months when the humpbacks are there breeding.

Bamba Travel was the only tour operator which responded and agreed to help me plan my tour in Hawaii. Although I would have liked a more thoroughly organised tour like pick up from the cruise terminal and transport to the Kualoa ranch organised, I had to take the public bus by myself. It was a bit daunting but Bamba gave me some instructions. At Hawaii it quite easy and safe to take public transport during the day. Bamba was helpful at every step. A bit slow with regards to correspondence bec of time differences as they are in the USA but they would respond daily. Thank you Bamba for helping me organise a tailored plan to meet most of my needs. I had a great time in Hawaii.

What people love about honolulu tours.

We loved the tour! The hotels/resorts overall were good. We didn’t always get the best view & some of the meals were not great. The Outrigger, in Honolulu, was very nice! Good food, nice room, but we did not have an ocean view. We found out from some of our tour guests, that we could have upgraded, to an ocean view. We were never informed of this! Pearl Harbor was great, however, I wish the tour included the Missouri. Both my husband & I could have spent more time there. Our best accommodation was at the Outrigger, on the Big Island, however the meals (including the Luau) left a lot to be desired. Our room was perfect, along with the pool. Convenient to eat offsite!!! The Volcano National Park tour was perfect!!! My favorite tour! We loved Maui, however our ocean view was ground level, & could not view the pool, or beach, because the cabanas blocked the view. Strange bathroom layout! We like a dressing/vanity area separate from the shower & commode. Food at the Sheraton was excellent!!!, along with other choice restaurants to choose from! Our tour directer, Lisa Beardsley was the best!!!..so kind, knowledgeable & fun to be with!!! She truly went above & beyond to cater to everyone’s needs! The arrangements, island hopping, check-ins, excursion meeting times…All over planning was excellent! Thank you Tour Radar & Globus for a memorable experience!
This tour gave us lots of free time to explore and relax. Organization of travel was good and hotels used were nice and in good locations. It would have been nice to have a couple meals as a group included.

Honolulu frequently serves as the gateway for cruise ships sailing to and around the Hawaiian islands. If you have time before, during, or after your cruise, Oahu offers an array of fun experiences so you can enjoy your tropical vacation to the fullest.

Plan the rest of your Hawaii cruise details with ease 1. Find a place to stay on Oahu before and/or after your cruise (we definitely recommend staying before) 2. Grab the Cruising Hawaii Guide for in-depth planning resources for each island, tailored to cruise passengers’ needs! 3. Book a rental car for Oahu or any other islands you want to get around independently. 4. Check out our tips for booking Hawaii travel to save on travel expenses.

Can’t Miss Honolulu Shore Excursions

As the most visited island in Hawaii, Oahu has no shortage of activities to keep you entertained during your stopover. But cruise ship passengers only have a limited time to explore, which is why it’s essential to prioritize these must-do activities.

  • Pearl Harbor : A trip to Pearl Harbor can be done on your own or with a tour group. Keep in mind that there are four museums you can visit, and most tours will only cover one or two of these sights. If you want more flexibility, then we recommend going on your own or booking a private, customized tour.
  • Circle Island Tour: This epic sightseeing tour packs in all the best attractions of Oahu in just 9 hours. On your 120-mile journey, you’ll visit Diamond Head Lookout, Nu’uanu Pali Lookout, Waimea Valley, and so much more!
  • Waikiki Surfing Lessons: Whether you’re a complete beginner or looking to improve your skills, surfing is a quintessential Hawaiian activity. There are multiple surf shops and schools around the island, but we recommend Ohana Surf Project as it’s in Waikiki, close to where the cruise terminal is.
  • Hawaiian Catamaran Sail: This is more than just a sightseeing cruise – it’s an entire cultural experience! On your two-hour tour of the ocean on a traditional wooden sailing canoe, you’ll learn all about Hawaiian culture and history while also enjoying refreshments and snacks.

Honolulu Shore Excursion Tips

Planning an excursion in Honolulu is a bit different than your other ports of call, as Oahu is likely the starting and ending point if you’re on Norwegian Cruise Line’s Pride of America . Pride of America is the only ship that does a loop of the major Hawaiian Islands every week.

Therefore, the time you spend on land depends on your personal schedule. Instead of just having a day on shore, you can have several days to do what you want! Get to know Oahu so you’re ready for all it has to offer.

Ideally, you should plan to have at least three or four days to explore Oahu . While you can do this once your cruise is over, we recommend taking time before the ship departs, as it’ll give you a few days to get over the jet lag as well. Find a great place to stay in Honolulu for before and after your trip!

We also dive into the best time to cruise Hawaii and break down when other cruise lines go so you can make the best decision for you.

Take a moment to familiarize yourself with the Hawaii cruise ports so you know what to expect at each stop. Some ports are central to a downtown area where you could spend all day ( Kailua Pier ) and others are far from anything you’ll want to do ( Kahului Harbor ).

Cruising Hawaii Guide

Get the cruising hawaii guide.

Booking a cruise to Hawaii is the easy part (in our opinion). The hard part is finding the best shore excursions, planning self-guided itinerary days, and how to get around the island.

You’ll get our Oahu Wayfinder Itinerary + Cruising Hawaii Guide downloads, they include 90+ shore excursion tour options, over 16 self-guided itinerary days, our favorite restaurants, and the best beaches. We want your cruise to Hawaii to be unforgettable, and stress-free.

On your first take, head out on the Circle Island Tour to see a handful of sights at once and to get a feel for the island. You can then spend the next few days going back to places you enjoyed the most, like the North Shore or the Windward Coast.

Alternatively, you can always rent a car to explore the island on your own. This is a cost-effective way to get around without relying on tour schedules or expensive Ubers. Here is How To Get Around Oahu Without a Rental Car and Oahu Transport Options for more details.

Grab the Oahu Wayfinder Itinerary for an in-depth guide to all the best beaches, restaurants, and sights (with driving directions!) for your self-guided days. Plus you can save $7 by bundling the Cruising Hawaii Guide with the Oahu Wayfinder Itinerary by using CRUISE at checkout.

Here are a couple of popular sights you can reach in a short drive from Waikiki:

  • Ala Moana Regional Park : 7 minutes
  • Pearl Harbor : 22 minutes
  • Haleiwa : 50 minutes
  • Kailua : 25 minutes

Even though there are a lot of fun activities to do with your family during the day, make sure to save your energy for an evening luau . There are so many great options on Oahu, so you’re in for a real treat if you love live music, Polynesian dancing, and delicious buffet dinners.

If you’re hoping for a full-day cultural experience, then head to the Polynesian Cultural Center , an all-day immersive experience that ends with a live luau show.

Where to Book Honolulu Shore Excursions

Booking honolulu shore excursions with the ship.

Booking an excursion with your cruise operator is an easy and stress-free way to plan out your port of call stops. You’ll also find that they have tons of fun activities for you to do in Honolulu before or after your trip!

Here are a few reasons to book with the ship:

  • Guaranteed Return: All shore excursions organized by the ship are designed to come back before the ship leaves port. With a schedule that works with the ship’s timing, you can enjoy your activity without worry.
  • Transportation: A nice perk of booking with the ship is that it includes transportation. That way, you won’t have to worry about hailing a cab or taking public transportation to and from the dock.
  • Cost: Although the excursion cost may be higher than if you were to organize it independently, the extra price is justified because it usually includes transportation. Not having to worry about timing or booking a cab is priceless!
  • Refunds: Tours booked with the ship will have refund policies in case you are unable to dock due to weather or strong currents.
  • Booking Flexibility: If you don’t want to book your Honolulu shore excursion before the trip, you don’t have to! Ship-organized tours can be booked online, but they can also be arranged onboard once you have a better idea of your schedule and what you want to do. Just know these do fill up fast, so you may not get the pick of the lot once you’re on the boat.

Honolulu shore excursions, Norwegian Cruise lines

Booking Honolulu Shore Excursions with the Tour Operator

If the ship excursions are too expensive (or you just can’t find one to your liking), you can always book directly with the tour operator on Oahu. Although they probably won’t guarantee an on-time return to the ship, you can always call the cruise line ahead of time if you’re running late.

While there are many types of tours out there, it’s best to book with a reputable and trusted company. We’ve spent countless hours vetting tour operators and going out with them, so you can feel comfortable knowing you’re booking a tour that prioritizes safety as well as a good time!

  • Supporting Local Businesses: When booking directly with the tour operator, you’ll be supporting a local Hawaiian business, which is great for the island community!
  • Cost Savings: Local tours tend to be cheaper than the ones offered by the cruise line, sometimes as much as 30% cheaper. Therefore, it’s a better option if you’re looking to stick to a budget on your trip.
  • Availability: Only a limited number of cruise-ship organized tours are available. If you see that your top choice is sold out, you can always check with a tour operator to book a local excursion instead.
  • Small Groups: Tours organized by local businesses offer a smaller, more intimate setting with usually no more than 12 guests.
  • Cancellation Policy: Before you book your excursion, check the operator’s cancellation and refund policy. In case your ship can’t dock or you cannot go on the tour, you’ll be thankful to have that 24 to 72-hour cancellation policy.

The Best Honolulu Shore Excursions

As promised, here is a list of some of the best shore excursions you can do before or after your cruise. Even if you don’t have that many extra days on land, most of these trusted providers will pick you up directly from the cruise terminal, so you don’t have to waste any time!

Grand Island Circle Tour

The Grand Island Circle Tour is one of the most popular Oahu tours as it takes you to some of the most beautiful attractions around the island! Over the course of 9 hours, you’ll be driven to Oahu’s best beaches, farms, parks, and towns with your guide (this is a small-group tour).

Visit the island’s best surfing spots on the North Shore, learn about how macadamia nuts and pineapples are grown on farm tours, and marvel at the lush, jaw-dropping landscapes that Oahu is known for.

Private Island Tour

Do you have specific sights bucket list items that you want to tick off your list? On this private island tour , you can fully customize your entire journey around Oahu. You can spend the whole day driving or stop off at any attractions or landmarks that you have been dying to see.

You and up to 5 other guests will have 8 hours with your driver, who can also make recommendations on where to go. Best of all, they’ll pick you up (with your luggage) from the cruise terminal and drop you back at the airport!

USS Arizona & Visitor’s Center

A trip to the USS Arizona at Pearl Harbor is a historically significant and moving experience. Although it’s a bit outside of the city, this tour makes it easy to see the memorial during your time in Oahu.

You’ll be picked up directly at the cruise terminal and driven to Pearl Harbor. While there is a guide for the ride, they do not go with you into the memorial. After you tour the museums, you’ll be driven back so you can continue with your trip. There are multiple pickup times available to fit the cruise ship’s schedule.

If you prefer to drive yourself (or take a taxi, Uber, or Lyft), you can reserve your own Pearl Harbor tickets here.

Honolulu shore excursions - USS Arizona

Pearl Harbor All-Day, All Sites

There’s so much more to Pearl Harbor than the USS Arizona Memorial. If you’re interested in a more comprehensive experience, then this full-day tour is an excellent choice. It includes a trip to the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center and the USS Arizona Memorial, as well as a tour through the USS Bowfin, USS Battleship Missouri, and Ford Island.

Because this is a 9-hour tour, it’s crucial that you have a full day to spend on Oahu. It’s also important to note that they pick up and drop off in Waikiki but not directly at the cruise terminal.

Honolulu shore excursions - Pearl Harbor

North Shore Half Day

The North Shore of Oahu is famous for its world-class surfing, laid-back atmosphere, and spectacular natural beauty – so it’s easy to see why many people would want to make the journey up the island to visit! If you have a couple of hours free, then book this North Shore tour with a private guide.

They will pick you up in a Jeep and take you to all the popular sights (as well as a few secret spots that tourists don’t usually see!).

Honolulu shore excursions - North Shore Half day

Turtle Canyon Snorkeling

Swimming with green sea turtles is a once-in-a-lifetime adventure! At Turtle Canyon, you can snorkel with these majestic creatures and see how they clean themselves using reef fish at the cleaning station. And if you’re lucky, you’ll get to see other marine life like dolphins, spotted eagle rays, monk seals, and maybe even a humpback whale (Dec-March)!

There are two types of Turtle Canyon Snorkeling tours available. One is in a small group with 6 people, and the other is a cheaper tour on a larger boat with 40 guests. The departure point for the tour is at Kewalo Harbor, which is just a 30-minute walk or 6-minute drive from the terminal.

Waikiki Beach Loading Catamaran Sail

If you can’t get enough of being out on the water, then this scenic catamaran trip is for you! Departing from downtown Waikiki (in front of the Moana Surfrider Hotel ), this 1-hour cruise boasts panoramic views of the beach, Diamond Head, and downtown Honolulu.

There are 5 departures daily, including an evening sunset cruise. They also have a bar onboard for drinks, although you’re more than welcome to BYOB.

Honolulu shore excursions - catamaran sail

Hawaiian Catamaran Sail

This is one of the most unique shore excursions that you can do when you’re in Honolulu! Unlike most sailing tours, the Hawaiian Catamaran tour is an educational journey where you’ll learn all about Hawaiian history and culture. It’s a really immersive experience that we thought was even better than going to a luau!

The 2-hour trip sets sail on a traditional wooden catamaran with a small group of only 6 guests. But if you’re looking for a more intimate trip, you can charter the boat privately.

There are four departures throughout the day from Kewalo Harbor, so it’s easy to work around your cruise ship timing.

Whale Watching

If you’re in Hawaii from December to March, you’ll have the opportunity to see humpback whales off the coast of Oahu! Get up bright and early and head out onto the waters at 7:00am for your chance to see these breathtaking creatures!

Book using the code Whales15 to save 15% on this tour !

Honolulu shore excursions - whale watching

Honolulu Helicopter Tours

You’ve seen Oahu by land and sea, but a Honolulu Helicopter Tour allows you to see the island from an entirely new perspective! Choose from a scenic 18-, 30-, or 60-minute tour of the skies (which we guarantee will be one of the more unique experiences you’ll have here!).

Tours depart from Honolulu Airport, which is a 15-minute drive from the terminal. Use code HVG to score 5% off on this tour , too!

Surfing Lessons

Hawaii is one of the best places in the world for surfing. If you’ve ever wanted to hang 10 on Waikiki Beach, then take a private, semi-private, or group lesson with Ohana Surf Project . This is how we learned to surf, and we can’t recommend them enough!

When booking your lesson, request a pickup to their surf school. They have their own transportation service and can arrange pickup close to where the cruise ship docks.

Honolulu Excursion FAQs

Where do honolulu cruise ships dock for shore excursions.

Cruise ships arrive at the Pier 2 Cruise Terminal . This is approximately a 10-minute drive from Waikiki and a 15-minute drive from the airport.

Can I get picked up by taxi, Uber, or Lyft from the dock for my Oahu shore excursion?

If transportation is not included, you can hire a taxi or call an Uber or Lyft straight to the dock. If you want more flexibility to explore, it’s also possible to rent a car (we have more info on all the different transportation options in our Cruising Hawaii Guide ).

Do tour operators offer pickup at the dock?

Most of the tours we have listed include transportation to and from the dock. If you don’t see this option when booking online, give the operator a call and tell them you’ll be disembarking at Pier 2, they may be able to arrange transport.

What should I know about booking tours in Hawaii?

Here are a few important pieces of information to keep in mind when booking your excursions:

  • Tipping your guide $10 to $20 a person is standard, although you should ultimately decide how much to give depending on your experience.
  • Oahu does have lots of sunshine, but rain and wind are not uncommon. If there is bad weather, it’s possible your tour may be canceled.
  • If you’re going on a boat excursion, don’t forget to bring motion sickness medication! Smaller boats tend to be rockier compared to the larger cruise ships.
  • Double-check the age restrictions for your tours. While some excursions are family-friendly, others require your kids to be at least 5 years of age.

By now, you should have a good idea about what you can do in Honolulu and Oahu. But for more information about cruising the islands, our Cruising Hawaii Guide is a huge help!

We had friends book us on this island tour & it was amazing!! Not one bad thing to say & our driver & tour guide (Wes) was not only a great driver, he was also very funny & extremely knowledgeable on the island history. This tour stopped at so many great locations that included Kualoa Ranch, where we were treated to an excellent buffet style lunch after our tour of the ranch, as well as we stopped at a Macadamia farm, the Dole plantation & several amazing lookout points. Along our stops we were lucky enough to see 2 whales & even some sea turtles.

Roberts Hawaii is the tour company I used to set up my time on the Big Island. EVERYONE I dealt with from the Honolulu airport, to the Hilo airport, to the cars and tour guides…they were ALL exceptional!!!! Most of my readers know I do NOT use any guide without checking with TA first and this group came highly recommended and I’ll vouch for that authenticity!!! Knowledgeable, nice, and fun and boy did I get my money’s worth with this trip to the Big Island!!! Thanks to all of you on the Roberts Hawaii Team!!!! You were the best!!!

Our driver Fred was bang on time at the pick up, he is extremely knowledgeable with regards to the island history and Polynesian culture and relays all this throughout the day. The coach was very comfortable and during the tour there are plenty of stops to stretch your legs. Pretty much everything was covered during our tour, and the highlights for me were the Macadamia nut farm and the Dole Pineapple plantation.

Everything you need in an airport shuttle, prompt, attentive, driver safe and calm, helped with my luggage and most importantly got me to the airport on time. Easy to book online (although i did have to alter my departure time as i prefer to be at the airport with plenty of time). Not the cheapest but definitely not expensive, and i prefer to pay for reliability. Thanks for minimising the stress levels.

We booked two shore tours with Roberts Hawaii when cruising around the islands; a day trip including Pearl Harbour in Honolulu and Historic Kona on the big island. We highly recommend them! The website booking process was very easy to use and the transaction very smooth, with an email confirmation and reminder the day before. Once on shore, the tour representatives were easy to identify and friendly. The tour buses were clean and air conditioned. The drivers were friendly, approachable and knowledgeable with a pleasant dialogue on the tour. Mahalo John and Chuck! We enjoyed our time with you.

Our Hawaiian package included airport to hotel and hotel to airport shuttle service. This company was perfect both ways. Once we got our luggage from baggage claim we didn't have to touch it again until we got to our room. The driver and his assistants were so very nice. We got a lot of the local flavor on our ride. The driver on the return trip was just as helpful. He was punctual which put our minds at ease. Great company.

Waikiki Beach Waikiki Beach free

U.S. News Insider Tip: In between surf sessions, refuel with a Banán bowl at its Waikiki Shack off Kalakaua Avenue. Its soft serve "ice cream" is made from locally grown bananas with toppings like macadamia nut honey butter, fresh papaya and dark chocolate. – Sharael Kolberg, Contributor, Travel

Nineteenth-century Hawaiian royalty used to come to the Honolulu neighborhood of Waikiki to relax and surf, just as scores of tourists do today. That's because this area's famous beach (which is a string of several beaches dotting the island's southwest coastline) is the go-to spot for its soft, honey-colored sand and the high waves that lap the shores during the winter months. But you don't have to be a surfer to appreciate Waikiki Beach; just lie back on a beach towel, relax and gaze at the majestic, Le'ahi, or Diamond Head State Monument , in the distance.

Pearl Harbor National Memorial Pearl Harbor National Memorial free

U.S. News Insider Tip: Plan for a full day at Pearl Harbor. Even if you don't spend the whole day here, it's a lot to take in and you won't want to rush to another activity or dinner reservation. – Amanda Norcross, Content & SEO Strategist

Located less than 10 miles northwest of downtown Honolulu in the Central O'ahu region of the island, the Pearl Harbor National Memorial is home to the USS Arizona Memorial, which is the final resting place of more than 900 sailors and marines killed during the Pearl Harbor attack in 1941. The sunken battleship is still visible from the memorial floating above it. Many visitors say this is a "must-do" attraction, and recommend reserving your free ticket well in advance since availability is so limited due to high demand.

hawaii excursions honolulu

Diamond Head State Monument Diamond Head State Monument

The Hawaiian name for Diamond Head is Le'ahi. It is a tuff cone (consolidated volcanic ash) crater that was created 300,000 years ago during a single volcanic eruption that spewed ash into the air. That ash settled over thousands of years, and today, Diamond Head State Monument's ridgeline is one of the most recognizable features of O'ahu's skyline, not to mention home to one of the island's most scenic hiking trails .

Though the 0.8-mile hike from the trailhead to the summit is steep and strenuous, gaining 560 feet, travelers say you'll be rewarded with a surreal view of Waikiki Beach and the Pacific Ocean once you reach the top. But keep in mind that this natural wonder is one of Honolulu's most popular attractions, so consider arriving early to beat the heat and the crowds. Also, remember to bring plenty of water, since no water fountains are available on the trail. For a different (less strenuous) perspective, consider opting for a helicopter tour . Many of the island's air tours fly directly over the crater.

Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve

Located about 10 miles east of Waikiki , the family-friendly Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve is one of the best places to snorkel with exotic fish and marine life. It is also a state park and is situated within a volcanic cone, which naturally protects it from the elements, such as wind and waves.

To reach Hanauma Bay, you can take an Uber or drive yourself (it costs $3 to park); tour buses are not allowed to enter the park. Be aware that the parking lot fills up quickly. Entrance to the park costs $25. Children 12 and younger, active military and kama'aina (Hawaiian residents) can enter for free with state ID. Tickets must be reserved online and paid for in advance through the Honolulu Parks & Recreation  website. Since there is a restriction on how many visitors are allowed per day due to conservation efforts, recent travelers complained that it is difficult to get a reservation, and suggest booking well in advance. Once there, reviewers raved about the number and variety of reef fish.

Battleship Missouri Memorial Battleship Missouri Memorial

Launched in 1944, the USS Missouri (or "Mighty Mo") is best known for hosting a meeting between Allied and Axis representatives that led to Japan's surrender and the end of World War II. After the war, the ship served in the Korean War and the Gulf War before docking in Pearl Harbor and opening as a memorial. It holds the distinction of being the world's last active service battleship.

According to recent visitors, the Battleship Missouri Memorial's war artifacts and exhibits complement the displays at the Pearl Harbor National Memorial . Many past travelers also praised the attraction's knowledgeable tour guides. However, some wished bags/purses could be taken on board and suggested leaving personal items behind to avoid paying a $7 per bag storage fee.

Makapu'u Point Lighthouse Trail Makapu'u Point Lighthouse Trail free

Less than 6 miles northeast of the Koko Crater Trail lies the 2-mile round-trip Makapu'u Point Lighthouse Trail. Easier to trek than the one at Koko Crater, this free trail overlooks the Pacific Ocean and is a prime spot for spotting seabirds and whales between November and May. The path also leads to the red-roofed Makapu'u Lighthouse, which was built in 1909.

Visitors love that the Makapu'u Point Lighthouse Trail is paved and features ample benches, making it easy for travelers of all ages to explore. Many also rave about the trail's "amazing" views, adding that bringing a camera is a must. But remember, this path is mostly exposed to the sun and wind, so dress appropriately, wear sunscreen and pack plenty of water. Hawaii's Department of Land and Natural Resources recommends allotting at least two hours to complete this hike.

Travel about 15 miles northeast of downtown Honolulu to the Windward Coast and you'll discover two of the island's most popular beaches – Kailua Beach Park and Lanikai (or Ka'ohao) Beach. Of the two, Lanikai is more tranquil and offers relatively calm waters. This family-friendly beach is also within view of the postcard-perfect Mokulua Islands (or Na Mokulua), which is a popular spot to kayak to.

Beachgoers praise Lanikai Beach's beautiful water, adding that its location in a mostly residential part of Kailua makes it less crowded and more relaxing than Waikiki Beach . But the beach's Kailua address is also its biggest drawback: Several visitors warn that parking in the area is limited. Even with the limited parking, reviewers praise the beach's soft sand and brilliant water.

The National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific stretches across much of the crater and contains several moving tributes, including the Honolulu Memorial, which is dedicated to armed forces who fought in the Pacific during World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. Notable veterans buried here include Ernie Pyle (the famous World War II correspondent) and Stanley Armour Dunham (the maternal grandfather of former President Barack Obama).

Previous visitors raved about the cemetery's beautiful and peaceful setting, adding that its memorial markers are very informative. Many compared it to Arlington National Cemetery and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial . Others highlighted the spectacular views as reasons to plan a visit.

If you want to find out more about Hawaiian history and culture, then head to the Bishop Museum. It was founded in 1889, in honor of the wife of museum founder Charles Reed Bishop, Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop – the last descendant of the Kamehameha royal family. The property houses more than 25 million historical, cultural and natural artifacts about Hawaii and the Pacific. Exhibits include the three-story Hawaiian Hall (where visitors can learn about Hawaiian gods, key events in Hawaiian history and more) and a planetarium. The planetarium features "Wayfinders," a full-dome projection program that puts viewers on the deck of the voyaging canoe,  H o k u le'a, as it travels from Tahiti to Hawaii using traditional Polynesian navigation techniques.

This approximately 150-foot-tall waterfall, which sits 5 miles northeast of downtown Honolulu, is easily accessible. All you need is proper footwear, insect repellant, drinking water and the stamina to hike about 1½ miles on a well-worn path. The rainforest scenery is otherworldly, with enormous prehistoric ferns and the snaking roots of banyan trees. It's no wonder why Steven Spielberg filmed scenes from "Jurassic Park" here. You probably won't see any dinosaurs but be prepared: The path to the falls can be quite slippery with mud, so wear sturdy hiking shoes that you don't mind getting dirty.

Recent travelers appreciated the unique glimpse into Hawaii's culture that this attraction offers. However, you'll need to keep a few rules in mind when touring the property. Kids younger than 5 must be strapped into a child carrier or palace-provided stroller at all times. Wearing cloth booties to protect the palace's floors is also required.

The Hawaiian Islands boast more than 1,200 miles of coral reef, so it's hardly surprising that two of O'ahu's most popular activities are snorkeling and scuba diving. Dive into the island's surrounding turquoise water and you'll likely find an array of colorful fish (think: bright yellow tang, rainbow runners and Hawaii's state fish, humuhumunukunukuapua'a, or rectangular triggerfish), plus bigger marine creatures like dolphins and sea turtles.

Past travelers loved snorkeling for free at public beaches like Sans Souci Beach Park on the south end of Waikiki and Shark's Cove on the North Shore (don't let the name scare you – it's a great place for spotting sea turtles), citing the ample marine life and clear water as reasons to return. If you don't have your own snorkel equipment, your hotel or resort may provide gear. If not, you can rent some; fees vary by shop and rental period. Popular locations include Snorkel Bob's, Aqua Zone Scuba Diving & Snorkeling and Hawaii Beach Time. If you'd prefer a guided snorkeling tour , try traveler-approved Hanauma Bay Tours, which provides round-trip transportation between Waikiki and Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve , as well as snorkel equipment.

Waimea Valley Waimea Valley

U.S. News Insider Tip: The hike to Waimea Falls is about 3 ½ miles of flat, paved road with breathtaking scenery. Pack a picnic, take a swim and enjoy the surroundings. Also leave time to visit Waimea Bay Beach across the highway. – Sharael Kolberg, Contributor, Travel

Not only is Waimea Valley a beautiful place to explore, with lush landscaping, 52 themed botanical gardens, native ecosystems, native birds and a waterfall, but it is also, more importantly, a sacred Hawaiian historical and cultural site. Waimea Valley is rooted in Hawaiian history and continues to be a steward for Hawaiian spirituality and traditions. On the property, you'll find six significant cultural sites, including traditional Hawaiian shrines, houses and agricultural terraces. Resident artisans share their knowledge of Hawaiian history, artistry and craftsmanship.

Kap'lolani Regional Park Kap'lolani Regional Park free

On the south end of Waikiki , you'll find Kap'Iolani Regional Park, which includes the Honolulu Zoo and Waikiki Shell (a venue for outdoor concerts). It is one of the largest public parks and the second-oldest park on O'ahu. Facilities include tennis courts, soccer fields, an archery range and a 3-mile jogging course. It is a popular destination for locals and visitors alike. Recent visitors say it is a wonderful place to take a stroll and recommend pairing it with a stop at the Honolulu Zoo if you're traveling with kids. Others recommend the park for its views of Diamond Head and its quiet atmosphere.

Metered and free parking are available along the streets bordering the park. Across the street from the park is Kap'Iolani Park Beach and Kaimana Beach, as well as the Waikiki Aquarium and the traveler-approved Barefoot Beach Café. The park, which is free to access, is open daily from 5 a.m. to midnight. For more information, visit the Honolulu Parks & Recreation website .

Kualoa Ranch Kualoa Ranch

If horseback riding, e-bike tours, zip lining or a jungle Jeep excursion are on your vacation to-do list, a visit to Kualoa Ranch is a must. Not only is the lush landscape stunningly beautiful, but it is also an adventure-lovers dream. Movie buffs will also dig it since it was the filming location for the "Jurassic Park" franchise, among other films. The 4,000-acre property on the Windward Coast is a private nature reserve and working cattle ranch, and is located about 20 miles from central Honolulu and 30 miles from the North Shore. The ranch is located just across the highway from the ocean (with picturesque views of Mokoli'i), which means water sports activities like catamaran tours and kayak and paddleboard rentals are also an option. All tours are guided and range in activity level. Tour lengths range from 90 minutes to three hours.

Breathtaking scenery and movie memories are what some recent visitors liked most. Many reviewers recommended the e-bike and all-terrain vehicle tours.

O'ahu Surfing O'ahu Surfing

It's no secret: O'ahu is home to some of the world's best surfing spots. Every winter (when surfing conditions are at their best), professional surfers from across the globe flock to O'ahu's North Shore to shred some gnarly waves in the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing. Basically, the Super Bowl of surfing, the Triple Crown is held during the winter months when massive swells roll in from the stormy northern Pacific Ocean. But you don't have to be a pro to hang 10 on O'ahu. There are plenty of surf schools that will take you from a grom (local slang for a surfing newbie) to a "Big Kahuna" (or master surfer) in the course of a day. Best of all: No one will laugh if you wipe out (and you will).

Previous first-timers loved surfing Waikiki Beach 's calm waves, while the most experienced surfers tackled the large swells found at Waimea Bay on the North Shore. If you plan on taking surfing lessons, consider traveler-approved surf schools like Ohana Surf Project , Polu Lani Surf Lessons & Adventures and Hans Hedemann Surf School . Most will teach anyone who's willing to learn, no matter their skill level.

Past visitors recommend wearing shoes with sturdy soles as many of the paths are very rocky, but many say they enjoyed the beautiful gardens. Despite its close proximity to downtown Honolulu, reviewers said the arboretum felt world's away.

Opened in 1982, the garden was designed and built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to provide flood protection for Kane'ohe.

The scenic view of the cliffs, lush gardens and a lake full of fish were just some of the highlights enjoyed by recent visitors. Reviewers recommend wearing sturdy walking shoes to make use of the many trails. Others said a stop here is a great way to spend a day away from the beach and recommend bringing supplies for a picnic.

Honolulu Museum of Art Honolulu Museum of Art

In 2011, the Honolulu Academy of Arts joined forces with The Contemporary Museum to create the Honolulu Museum of Art. This museum features an art collection that spans across seas, styles and centuries. Along with pieces by Europe's great painters (Picasso, Gauguin and van Gogh, to name a few), the Honolulu Museum of Art showcases one of the world's best Asian art collections. The museum is also home to the Doris Duke Theatre, which screens independent, documentary and international films.

Many visitors praise the property's Asian art, but for a truly unique experience, several recommend checking out the Arts of Hawai'i collection, where you can view Georgia O'Keeffe's Maui landscapes, along with indigenous feather capes. Several reviewers noted that admission to the museum is included with your purchase of a tour of Shangri La , the former home of philanthropist and heiress Doris Duke.

USS Bowfin Submarine Museum & Park USS Bowfin Submarine Museum & Park

Like the Battleship Missouri Memorial , the USS Bowfin Submarine Museum & Park sits in Pearl Harbor . This historic vessel, which went on nine patrols during World War II, is one of only 15 U.S. World War II-era submarines that still exist. It now serves as a walk-through exhibit alongside a museum with various war artifacts, including battle flags and a submarine bell. Additional items, such as a cruise missile, a torpedo and a submarine rescue chamber, are on display in the surrounding park.

Some former travelers lamented the limited elbow room offered inside, but overall, many appreciated getting a firsthand look at the tight living quarters sailors had to endure while stationed on this submarine. Others enjoyed the self-guided audio tours covered by museum and submarine admissions.

Byodo-In Temple Byodo-In Temple

For a scenic and serene alternative to the beach, head to the Valley of the Temples Memorial Park, where you'll find the Byodo-In Temple, a Hawaii State Landmark that was established on June 7, 1968, to commemorate the 100-year anniversary of the first Japanese immigrants to Hawaii. The temple is a non-practicing Buddhist temple that welcomes visitors of all faiths to worship, meditate or simply admire its beauty. The lush grounds are located at the foot of the Ko'olau Mountains on the Windward Coast, about 15 miles north of downtown Honolulu. Along with the temple, the stunning grounds include a large reflecting pond, meditation niches, small waterfalls, the golden Amida buddha, bon-sho sacred bell and koi ponds. If you visit, you'll want to keep a few things in mind: Be respectful and quiet while in the Valley of the Temples – it is a solemn, religious area. Remember to remove your shoes before entering the Byodo-In Temple.

Ringing the bell is a must-do, according to recent visitors. Many enjoyed the peaceful atmosphere and the beautiful backdrop for snapping pictures. Reviewers recommend arriving early to avoid the tour bus crowds that descend on the grounds by midday.

Shangri La Shangri La

The philanthropist and American tobacco heiress Doris Duke spent her winters living in this opulent oceanfront home near Diamond Head State Monument . Today, it's a museum of Islamic art, culture and design. Duke began building it in 1937 and then spent nearly 60 years filling its walls and rooms with art and furniture from Egypt, India, Morocco, Spain, Syria and Turkey. By the end of her life, she had amassed approximately 4,500 objects, which are now available for you to see on a tour of her home.

Art lovers should definitely make plans to stop by Shangri La, but you should also consider visiting the home if you're just a teensy bit curious about the enigmatic heiress. Many recent travelers were more than impressed with this museum, describing its collection as "unbelievable" and well worth a visit. Several also pointed out that the property itself – which is often compared to grand estates like Topkapi Palace in Istanbul and the Taj Mahal in Agra, India – can't be missed.

The zoo is divided into the following sections: African Savanna, Reptiles, Birds and Primates. There is also a Keiki (Kids) Zoo, a picnic lawn, a playground, several gardens, a snack bar and restrooms.

Families who visited said it was nice to have an alternative to the beach and shopping, and were impressed with the wide variety of animals. However, a few noted that the zoo is small.

Many visitors complained that the Dole Plantation is an overcrowded tourist trap, but most agreed that the Dole Whip was the highlight.

Its 350-plus shops and restaurants can take as little as an hour or as much as a whole day to explore.

Although some visitors warn that items sold at Ala Moana Center can be quite pricey, many enjoy shopping here, especially on rainy days. Others rave about the on-site dining options, especially the poke bowls at Foodland Farms and the Japanese snacks and prepared foods at Nijiya Market. For a glimpse of a natural wonder, plan a visit to the Halona Blowhole, considered O'ahu's own Old Faithful. Situated less than 15 miles east of Waikiki , the blowhole was formed by molten lava tubes from volcanic eruptions that occurred thousands of years ago. Depending on the size of the ocean waves, water can shoot up to 30 feet in the air. Aside from observing the natural phenomenon, you may also be able to see the islands of Moloka'i and Lanai on a clear day.

We booked the 5 Star Circle Island with Pearl Harbor Tour and it was a great way to see the majority of the island all in one day. We started off at Pearl Harbor where we got to check out the vistors center and the Arizona Memorial. We then headed out to the Dole Pineapple Plantation where we got to take a tram tour and shop at the gift shop where we bought some amazing Dole Whips. We then headed up to the North Shore and our driver Charlie allowed us to get out and take some amazing pictures at the beach. We then went to Marriott for lunch were we also got to learn Hula from a "kumu hula" and that was really fun. We also checked out the Polynesian Cultural Center and did a canoe ride there, made stops at some of the famous lookout points like Pali Lookout, Hanauma Bay, Halona Blowhole and the Diamond Head Crater. The bus was comfortable with air condition and leather seats and our driver Charlie was super friendly and made the 12 hours go by quickly with all of his great stories and knowledge of the island. Highly recommend this tour!!

Matt was very prompt in the morning at the scheduled hotel we were supposed to be picked up at 6:10am. He had a couple of sweets for us early in the morning and plenty of water throughout the whole tour. Doing the Hoku tour was so worth the price, it might seem like 11hrs is a long time but believe me the time really flew by, well at least it did for us. They give you enough time to go through the memorials and the museums with plenty of time, Matt even told us where to go first before the crowd got there first. It came in handy too, we had time to go in the Bowfin by ourselves for the first 10mins without a big crowd lol. After we left that's when everyone started coming, so thanks Matt!! We would definitely book future tours with Hoku when we make a return visit.

Lunch provided for us Mahi Mahi, I got pulled pork lol.

Aloha Graciela, we are happy that you chose Hoku Hawaii Tours to guide you through Pearl Harbor. Matt, like all our guides are profoundly knowledgeable in Hawaii's rich history and culture. Mahalo for your kind review, we will pass along your sanctification to your guide Matt.

Isaiah was a fantastic driver and fabulous historian. He filled in the historical gaps that is part of the information related to our Pearl Harbor tour. Once at the Arizona and Pearl Harbor, Isaiah was helpful with his recommendations and timing of events. The included lunch was great! Fantastic place to have it at Ford Island air museum. Once at the USS Missouri, Isaiah once again gave great advice to take a tour with a docent on board the ship. The return trip from Pearl to the hotels was also educational. Thanks Isaiah for such a great trip! Awesome and will recommend this to anyone wanting to see Pearl Harbor and learn more reasons to Never Forget!

Me and my wife booked the Five Star Circle Island Tour via Hoku Tours, and it was the best decision for a "most bang for your buck," in regards to an excursion. It was literally a tour of the entire island of Oahu in an air conditioned bus. There were multiple stops along the way for amazing scenic pictures with intertwined Hawaiian cultural aspects. Sam was our driver and tour guide. He was beyond awesome and made this excursion even more enjoyable.

We had a wonderful tour even though the weather was a bit rainy. Our tour guide Sam made the trip. We learned all kinds of interesting facts about Oahu and the culture. Of course the Pearl Harbor tour is a must see. It helps to remember why we fight for freedom.

I took the Circle Island tour of Oahu today with Hoku Hawaiian Tours and it was fabulous!! Our tour guide, Paul, was outstanding. He had a wealth of knowledge about all things Hawaiian and kept us entertained with stories and jokes, and he was kind, courteous, and a real gentleman. I would highly recommend this tour and especially Paul as a tour guide. Mahalo nui loa iā 'oe

This was the third tour we took during a two-week stay on Maui and Oahu. I initially had some doubts about being part of tour group, but figured a half-day or full-day tour was bearable. The reality was that, without a rental car in Honolulu, that a tour was the only reasonable way we could see what we wanted to see on Oahu. There is so much to see beyond Waikiki and the Circle Tour was a good introduction to the beauty of Oahu. Our 24-passenger van had twice the capacity as our Road to Hana Tour on Maui. But somehow it didn't seem that much larger. (We had 24 adults and a young child.) Kanamu, our driver/tour guide, deserves a lot of credit for making the tour a fun adventure. We learned so much about Oahu and the Hawaiian culture. Kanamu obviously loved sharing the island culture with us. We learned a lot. She is a high energy person. For the first hour or so, I felt that energy was going to be draining for me, an introvert. But I soon got used to her style. I give her credit for making sure that we had lots of stops with many opportunities for stretching our legs, getting pictures of the the beautiful sights, and buying souvenirs, if we so desired. The day began with a pastry (a poi donut). A couple of bites was all that DH and I wanted. Quite sweet. We were glad we had eaten a light breakfast before boarding the van. (Our Valley Isle Excursions' Road to Hana tour included a continental breakfast which Hoku did not feature.) Bottled water was available throughout the day. We were warned that the Dole Pineapple Plantation was a "tourist trap," and I would have to agree. But still am glad we stopped. Kanamu kept us moving so we did not overstay our visit. The tour fee included lunch at the Polynesian Cultural Center. Lunch was decent (choice of two or three items). It was nice to sit at a large round table and visit with others on the van. After lunch, we had a boat ride which was a bit like being at Disneyland. Lunch and the boat ride were enough -- no desire to return to Polynesian Culture Center in the future. Too hokey for me. I can't begin to count the number of stops we had after lunch. I tried to follow on a map but soon lost track. A map like we had on our Road to Hana trip would have been helpful. At the end of the day, we were each given a very sturdy tote bag which featured the Hoku logo. (Now a very handy bag for groceries.) The Circle Tour was a full day and well worth the money. Highly recommended.

Our guide, Cousin Kevin embraced us as Ohana from the start and made this a wonderful day. We took the luxury eco tour which included paddle boarding on the Anahulu River, swimming in the Waimea Falls pool, a dip in the ocean by a secluded beach, a tour of Byodo-in Temple, plus stops at a coffee farm, macadamia farm and Dole Plantation. It was an action packed day with a small group, giving us an authentic flavor of the islands. Kevin's energy and enthusiasm kept us engaged, and there were people of all ages and abilities.

Apr 17, 2019

Aloha Theresa! To hear that Cousin Kev took care of you guys on tour really makes me happy, I am so glad he was able to show you what Oahu is all about about and that you felt like part of our Ohana. The Oahu Eco-Adventure Tours are a hit with guests who enjoy water activities as well as some sight seeing along the way. Mahalo for entrusting Hoku Hawaii Tours to show you Oahu, and I hope you enjoyed the rest of your stay in Hawaii.

We did the Oahu Eco- Adventure Tour. Paul was our guide and he was amazing!! So informative! So fun! Very memorable! Loved this tour so much!! You can tell he loves what he does and has such a passion for the land. He came out on the paddle boards with us and helped us out since we are first timers, and spotted some Beautiful turtles! He is very patient. Great stories rich with information, and we loved his "bad jokes"! Hopefully you'll be lucky enough to have him as your tour guide, you'll have so much fun! He made the day so wonderful for us and we loved his dinosaurs! Def going into our wedding album! ;)

Aloha Raquel! It sounds like you had an amazing time with us. We pride ourselves into making sure that our guests feel comfortable while on tour, to hear that Paul made your tour a fun yet memorable one, really brightens our day. The 8 best Hawaii cruises in 2024 and 2025

C ruising the Hawaiian Islands offers U.S. travelers an immersive South Pacific escape with all the comforts of home. In fact, the Aloha State is in many ways an ideal cruise destination. It has year-round sunny weather, four main islands featuring varied topographies — including sandy beaches, cascading waterfalls, volcanic mountains and vibrant green valleys — and a wide array of land- and water-based activities.

The main caveat? Hawaii cruise options are somewhat limited — just a fraction of what's available in the Caribbean — and many itineraries involve multiday crossings from the West Coast. Only one cruise line offers Hawaii itineraries throughout the year; most others visit during specific months or when repositioning ships in spring and fall.

For more cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Looking for the Hawaiian Islands sailing that's right for you? Here's a look at the eight best Hawaii cruises for every type of traveler.

Norwegian Cruise Line's 7-night Inter-island Hawaii

For travelers who want more aloha time than the typical eight-hour port call allows, Norwegian Cruise Line has a solution. Its 2,186-passenger Pride of America lets vacationers sample four Hawaiian islands over seven days, with overnights in Maui and Kauai, plus port calls on both Hilo and Kona on the island of Hawaii. In total, this itinerary offers nearly 100 hours of shore time.

Pride of America sails round-trip from Honolulu every Saturday year-round. As a U.S.-flagged ship, it's the only large vessel permitted to sail this way. Not only do you skip the long Pacific crossing that most cruise ships do to reach Hawaii, but passports are not required for U.S. citizens, and you can tack on pre- or post-cruise stays on Oahu.

The overnights on Maui and Kauai also mean it's possible to try several of Hawaii's signature experiences that most port calls don't allow. Passengers can catch dusk or dawn from atop Maui's massive 10,023-foot dormant volcano with sunrise and sunset excursions to the Haleakala Crater. And with the ship in port all night on Kauai, guests who want to enjoy traditional Hawaiian cuisine, music and hula performances can book the Luau Kalamaku for a fun evening out.

Pride of America, which has been cruising Hawaii since 2005, doesn't have the onboard thrills (race track, virtual-reality gaming, waterslides) of Norwegian's newer ships , but that's okay because the islands, not the ship, are your main destination. Its American-themed decor celebrates U.S. cities in a vibrant, and at times, kitschy way, but a 2021 refurbishment left its cabins and public spaces feeling refreshed.

Many of Norwegian's specialty dining venues (which incur a surcharge) are on board, including Cagney's Steakhouse, Le Bistro (here, it's Jefferson's Bistro), Moderno Churrascaria and Teppanyaki.

Who should go: Anyone seeking a convenient way to island-hop — and see a lot of Hawaii — by making the most of the generous shore time with a combination of independent exploration and shore excursions. Most sailings attract couples ages 50 and older, although summer and holiday sailings have plenty of families on board.

UnCruise Adventures' 7-night Hawaiian Seascapes

Cruisers seeking a less traditional, more carefree Hawaii experience can have it from November to April aboard UnCruise Adventures ' 36-passenger Safari Explorer. The seven-night Hawaiian Seascapes itinerary, which begins either on Molokai or the island of Hawaii, is an unconventional one designed for those who enjoy going off the beaten path in an intimate and more authentic setting. U.S. passports aren't required to sail.

UnCruise visits four islands — Maui and Lanai plus Molokai and Hawaii — and focuses on not only their striking landscapes and underwater beauty but also the cultural traditions, cuisine and music of the Hawaiian people. On Molokai, where there's not a single traffic light and the lifestyle is slow-paced, passengers get a chance to "talk story" with locals and enjoy a pa'ina (feast) and evening jam session. Lanai activities range from snorkel, paddleboard and kayak excursions to off-road adventures exploring the privately owned island's dramatic sea cliffs, red rock formations and vast fields once filled with Dole pineapples.

Most UnCruise sailings are during Maui's humpback whale season, so sightings while cruising off the coast of Maui are possible. You might also catch glimpses of dolphins and sea turtles. A "Captain's Choice" day is a wild card determined by the weather, marine life in the area and other factors, while the final two days are spent exploring the Big Island of Hawaii — including a hike up Hualalai volcano and a skiff ride along the rugged coast.

Constructed in 1998, Safari Explorer was designed with adventure itineraries in mind (in summer the U.S.-flagged ship repositions to Alaska). Its size allows it to navigate areas larger ships can't reach, which in Hawaii means bays and coves ideal for snorkeling or watersports.

With such a small number of passengers aboard, guests get to know each other — and Safari Explorer's friendly and knowledgeable crew — quite well. Passengers come together over meals featuring locally sourced ingredients, and as all UnCruise fares include unlimited wines, spirits and microbrews, shipmates can raise a glass without worrying who's buying a round. It all lends itself to an exclusive yet utterly relaxed week of cruising.

Who should go: The ship's laid-back onboard vibe paired with its land- and water-based activities make the Hawaiian Seascapes itinerary ideal for active travelers seeking a nature-focused itinerary — although cruise fares (which start around $5,900 per person) are among the priciest for a Hawaii cruise.

Holland America's 17-night Circle Hawaii

Travelers who have more than two weeks to spare and who prefer to arrive in Hawaii via ship rather than an airplane can do so on Holland America 's 17-night Circle Hawaii itinerary. They'd better also love sea days because crossing the Pacific from San Diego or Vancouver to Honolulu and back requires 10 days.

That means passengers enjoy five or six days in Hawaii on Kauai, Oahu, Maui and the island of Hawaii. Some itineraries stay in select ports overnight. Cruises departing from San Diego also call on Ensenada, Mexico. With either departure port, passports will be required.

The itinerary is offered in 2024 and 2025 on the 2,650-passenger Koningsdam and 1,432-passenger Zaandam.

Travelers with more time on their hands can also visit Hawaii as part of longer Pacific island cruises with Holland America. Koningsdam will sail a 35-night Hawaii, Tahiti & Marquesas itinerary in 2025 that combines visits to four Hawaiian islands with calls on five islands in French Polynesia and Fanning Island, Kiribati (and 20 sea days).

Related: Holland America unveils epic cruise to Hawaii and Alaska for 2025

Zaandam will also sail 51- to 56-night Tales of the South Pacific itineraries that visit multiple islands in Hawaii and French Polynesia along with ports in the Cook Islands, American Samoa and Fiji.

Holland America is popular with cruisers ages 60 and older, many of them retired, who have time to enjoy longer itineraries on ships that offer good value with a focus on culinary and musical enjoyment. Two of Koningsdam's most popular venues are its live entertainment area with three venues — B.B. King's Blues Club (for Memphis-style rhythm and blues), Billboard Onboard (for chart-topping hits played by a live pianist) and Rolling Stone Rock Room (for a live band playing classic rock), and World Stage, a theater with a 270-degree screen used for both special BBC Earth in Concert and theatrical productions.

Onboard specialty dining options (at an added cost) include Pinnacle Grill for steaks and seafood, Tamarind for Pan-Asian cuisine and Rudi's Sel de Mer for French Brasserie specialties and seafood.

Who should go: Mature travelers who prefer not to fly and who enjoy a more traditional cruise experience. They should also love sea days as much (or even more so) than port exploration.

Princess Cruises' 15- or 16-night Hawaiian Islands

Princess Cruises is also a good option for longer sailings. The cruise line offers numerous round-trip itineraries to Hawaii from Los Angeles, San Francisco and San Diego in the fall and winter.

The majority of sailings are aboard the 3,080-passenger Crown Princess and Ruby Princess from San Francisco, and the 2,600-passenger Grand Princess and 3,080-passenger Emerald Princess from Los Angeles.

Ships are in port for nine to 11 hours in Hawaii (Hilo), Kauai and Maui and for 16 hours in Oahu. Itineraries include a stop in Ensenada, Mexico (so passports are required), plus nine or 10 sea days.

The ships feature many of Princess' popular dining venues, including Alfredo's Pizzeria (a sit-down venue serving personal-size pizzas), Crown Grill for steaks and Sabatini's Italian Trattoria. There's plenty of outdoor space for soaking up the sun — including an adults-only sun deck — and a dazzling Piazza for enjoying cocktails, gelato and pop-up street performers.

Fans of Princess' Movies Under the Stars poolside screenings (with free popcorn) and Discovery at SEA enrichment programming will have ample time to enjoy these perks on a Hawaii sailing.

Who should go: These sailings will appeal to couples or groups of friends who prefer to have a wide choice of sailing dates, can take the time to enjoy a leisurely Pacific crossing and appreciate Princess' focus on quality cuisine and a sun deck designed for relaxation rather than thrills.

Celebrity's 9- to 12-night Hawaii Cruise

Travelers seeking modern interior decor on a ship designed with couples in mind can visit Hawaii aboard Celebrity Cruises ' 2,852-passenger Celebrity Solstice or 2,918-passenger Celebrity Edge on itineraries ranging from nine to 13 nights — but only if the timing is right. That's because the line offers only two sailings per ship each year (in spring and fall) as the ships reposition between Alaska and destinations in the Pacific. The itineraries are one-way (Vancouver to Honolulu or vice versa) with passports required.

These cruises call on three ports on two islands: Honolulu (Oahu) and Hilo and Kona (Hawaii), with one or two overnights in port and 10 hours ashore on one-day visits. All include five days in a row at sea. Since the itineraries either begin or end in Honolulu, there's also a chance for some pre- or post-cruise exploration.

Sea days offer opportunities to enjoy the chic, grown-up ambience and amenities aboard these ships. Each vessel offers multiple complimentary and extra-fee specialty restaurants. Celebrity Solstice features Tuscan Grille for Italian specialties and steak and Murano for modern French cuisine, while Celebrity Edge offers the whimsical Le Petit Chef and the international Eden Restaurant.

Celebrity's signature Martini Bar and many other onboard watering holes keep the grown-up vibe going day and night. Choose cruise fares that include alcohol and Wi-Fi, or pay a lower rate and pay for your drinks as you go.

Who should go: The slightly shorter one-way sailings and the ships' contemporary ambience make these itineraries ideal for couples and groups of friends seeking a relaxing escape — especially Gen Xers in their 40s and 50s, who are Celebrity's target market.

Carnival's 14- or 15-night Hawaii from Los Angeles

If fun is your cruise mantra, the "Fun Ship" brand Carnival Cruise Line offers a handful of round-trip sailings to Hawaii from Los Angeles (Long Beach) aboard the 2,984-passenger Carnival Radiance. Like other roundtrips from the West Coast, these itineraries spend just five days in Hawaii, offering eight to 14 hours of shore time in ports on four islands: Maui, Kauai, Oahu and Hawaii. Along with enjoying eight sea days, guests will also call on Ensenada, Mexico, so passports are required.

Carnival Radiance first sailed under that name in 2021, but it's not a new ship. Before an epic makeover, it sailed for the cruise line as Carnival Victory. Ship features include many of Carnival's signature complimentary and extra-fee dining venues, including Guy's Burger Joint and Pig & Anchor Bar-B-Que Smokehouse, BlueIguana Cantina, Fahrenheit 555 Steakhouse and Bonsai Sushi Express.

Additional guest favorite destinations on board include the RedFrog Pub, Alchemy Bar and WaterWorks aquapark. Expect high-voltage theater shows from Playlist Productions at night and poolside interactive contests by day.

Who should go: Socially inclined cruisers who love Carnival's emphasis on onboard fun and can appreciate a colorful ship with a lively ambience and lots of day and evening activities.

Royal Caribbean's 9- to 13-night Hawaii Cruises

A megaship cruise experience to Hawaii is available, too — with pricing that's quite affordable. Royal Caribbean cruises there on two vessels in one of its newer classes of ships: the 4,180-passenger Quantum of the Seas and Ovation of the Seas.

All are one-way cruises just before or after the Alaska cruise season (so late April or early October) between Oahu and Vancouver (or vice versa). The ships call on two Hawaiian islands and spend four or five days in a row at sea. Passports are required since these itineraries begin or end in Vancouver.

Ovation of the Seas and Quantum of the Seas feature a mix of thrills for all ages. These include RipCord by iFly simulated sky diving, FlowRider simulated surfing, bumper car racing in the SeaPlex indoor activity complex and the North Star sightseeing capsule, which ascends 300 feet above the top deck for 360-degree views.

Both ships also offer 14 dining venues, including the innovative Wonderland, Jamie's Italian by Jamie Oliver and kid-favorite Dog House, as well as bar options that include Schooner Bar for by-request piano tunes, Boleros for mojitos and merengue and Bionic Bar for drinks poured by robotic bartenders. Entertainment includes live cover bands in the Music Hall and multimedia music and dance performances in Two70.

Who should go: Cruisers who love a big ship with a wide array of dining choices, all kinds of evening entertainment and plenty of exciting activities to pass the time on sea days. Quantum-class ships are great for families, but the sail dates might not work for those with school-age kids.

Viking's 16-night Hawaiian Islands Sojourn

For a guaranteed adults-only sailing in a relaxed, boutique-style setting, upscale cruise line Viking also offers round-trip Hawaii cruises from Los Angeles in late 2024 and early 2025 on its 930-passenger Viking Neptune.

What sets Viking apart from most of the other lines offering Hawaii cruises is that it includes a free shore excursion in every port. These include a highlights tour of Honolulu and Pearl Harbor on Oahu and a visit to a scenic waterfall and the Kilohana sugar plantation on Kauai. Additional excursions can be booked at an extra charge.

The 16-night Hawaiian Islands Sojourn sailings visit four islands — Hawaii (Hilo), Oahu, Kauai and Maui — and like other round-trip sailings from the West Coast include 10 sea days and a call on Ensenada, Mexico, so passports are required.

Viking Neptune will also do 32-night Grand Hawaii and Polynesia sailings round-trip from Los Angeles in late 2024 and early 2025 that visit four islands in Hawaii and four in French Polynesia.

The ship, which debuted in 2022, features sleek Scandinavian-inspired decor, a soothing spa with a complimentary thermal area, an aft infinity pool and hot tub, a panoramic Explorer's Lounge and five onboard restaurants. Specialty restaurant Manfredi's serves an extensive menu of Italian specialties, while The Chef's Table offers rotating five-course themed menus, including Asian, French and California-inspired.

In addition to the free shore excursions, pricing includes complimentary wine or beer with lunch and dinner, specialty dining at no extra charge, crew gratuities and transfers.

Who should go: Couples who prefer the quieter ambience of a ship that doesn't allow anyone under 18 onboard, doesn't have a casino and offers presentations by regional experts that enhance immersion into local culture. Viking cruisers are generally over age 55.

Rockford Police Chief Carla Redd speaks with the media, today, in Rockford, Ill. Authorities say four people were killed and five were wounded in stabbings in northern Illinois. Redd said that a suspect is in police custody and was being questioned. She said police did not know the motive.

ROCKFORD, Ill. >> Four people were killed and five were hurt in stabbings in northern Illinois today, authorities said.

A suspect is in police custody and was being questioned this afternoon, according to Rockford Police Chief Carla Redd. She said one of the people who was wounded remained in critical condition.

“My heart goes out to the families right now that are suffering a loss,” Redd told reporters.

She said the Rockford Police received a medical call at 1:14 p.m. followed by additional calls for police and paramedics.

“We have four individuals who are deceased,” Redd said. “We have one that’s in critical condition right now and an additional four that are in stable condition.”

Not all of the victims had stab wounds and none were shot, according to Redd.

Three people died at the scenes. The fourth died at a hospital.

“We don’t believe there’s any other suspects that are on the run or at large at this particular time,” she said. “Right now, we don’t have a clear motive as to what caused this individual to commit such a heinous crime.”

Redd said residents in the area were being asked to review their home surveillance camera footage for anything related to the attacks.

Rockford’s population is about 150,000 and it’s 90 miles (144.84 kilometers) miles northwest of Chicago. The violence today came days after a teenage employee of a Walmart in Rockford was stabbed and killed inside the store.

“Today, we are shocked by another horrific act of violence against innocent members of our community,” Rockford Mayor Tom McNamara said. Now that the suspect is in custody, he continued, “Our primary concern is ensuring that our community members directly impacted by this violence are supported throughout their healing and recovery.”

The mayor wrote on the city’s Facebook page that “multiple jurisdictions” are “working on multiple crime scenes to develop an understanding of what transpired in an effort to prevent this from happening again.”

The suspect was arrested by a Winnebago County sheriff’s deputy after they were called to a reported home invasion, Sheriff Gary Caruana said.

“The young lady ran from him,” Caruana said of one of the survivors. “She got some stab wounds in her hands and her face. She is in serious condition. One of the good Samaritans stopped to help her out. He did get some stab wounds. He is being checked out.”

Resident Eric Patterson said he was struggling to make sense of the violence on his street.

“You can’t rationalize this,” Patterson told the Rockford Register Star. “It’s almost like playing a video game, but it’s reality. It makes no sense. It’s like Grand Theft Auto. ‘I’m going to run over the mailman here. I’m going to stab a couple people there. I am going to go in this house over here.’”

Cassandra Hernandez, another neighbor, told the Rockford paper that she is friends with one of the victims.

“You never expect this here,” Hernandez said. “We have such great neighbors.”
