Bangalore Palace

In the technology-driven, futuristic Silicon Valley of India, monuments of historical significance boasting of a glorious past are also abundant. The historical heritage of the city is so magnificent and eminent that it rises to prominence on its own. One such landmark is the Tudor style Bangalore Palace. The Palace is a perfect representation of the lavishness and splendour with which India's most resilient dynasties ruled. Famous for its opulent architecture and amusement activities, the Palace is visited by several visitors every day. The colossal Palace boasts of massive courtyards, bright interiors, kingly grounds, splendid spiral staircases, stately towers and a luscious garden in a proud display of posh regality.Anyone who admires classic architecture and artistry would be delighted to experience it first hand at this Palace. It also houses an amusement park in its enclave to the delight of many younger visitors. Having been a private residence to the Wodeyar family, Bangalore palace offers a linear perspective into the royal life of the forepassed era. It is plush with a vibrant and varied collection of ancient royal artefacts, paraphernalia, hunting trophies and family photos. The Palace houses some of the most famous paintings of the 19th Century, including the works of one of India's most celebrated artists Raja Ravi Verma. The Palace grounds very often become venues for concerts and festivals. World-renowned artists like Enrique and Guns N' Roses have graced the palace grounds with their talent and presence. The Palace hence combines the richness and luxury of royal history with the vivacious and exuberant demeanour of the youth. Bangalore Palace HistoryOriginally a property of Reverend J Garrett, the principal of a school in the cantonment town at that time, the area where the Palace is now located was purchased from him by the British Guardians of Maharaja Chamarajendra Wadiyar for 40,000 rupees. The construction of the palace began in the year 1874. Mr John Cameron of Lalbagh was assigned the task of landscaping Palace along with its surroundings. The complete construction of the palace was completed in the year, 1878.The Palace saw many additions and modifications in its architecture in subsequent years. Maharaja Jayachamaraja Wadiyar added a few portions like the twin external staircase, the platform for musicians etc. outside the Durbar Hall. In 1970, HH Jayachamarajendra Wodeyar transferred ownership of the property to two companies, Chamundi Hotels and Shree Venkateshwara Real Estate Enterprises. However, this transaction was later shown to be fraudulent. A legal battle followed between this deal and Jayachamarajendra's son, Srikanta Datta. The five sisters of Srikanta Datta are now in possession of sections of the 28 acres of the Palace. In the year 1990 Srikant Datta finally compromised with the Chamaraju group and got back his part of the property including the main Palace except for 45 acres that the Chamaraju group still retains. Architecture:The Palace showcases exquisite wooden interiors surrounded by pristine walls. The Palace is enclosed within beautiful gardens. The architecture is a medley of Tudor style and Scottish style and has gothic undertones. A lot of physical artefacts inside are of British origin. It is said that the architecture of this building is inspired by that of the Windsor Castle and other architectural marvels of England and Normandy. The most prominent features of the Palace like the two-level granite structure of the fortified towers and turreted parapets take direct inspiration from the Tudor building styles. The entrance is decorated with grand Roman arches. The exterior of the building is covered in eccentric shapes and angles. The exterior walls are of a blushing cinnabar shade that gives the building a quaint Victorian vibe. The floor of the open courtyard of the Palace is adorned with granite seats covered with azure ceramic tiles. The ground floor also contains a beautifully decorated ballroom. The first floor of the Palace has a distinct chamber known as the Durbar Hall attached to an ornate staircase. This hall is famous for the enormous elephant head that is mounted in it and its gothic style tinted glass windows.

Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu, is known as the Gateway to South India. It's a sprawling and busy, yet conservative, city with deep traditions that are yet to give way to the growing foreign influence there. Unlike some other Indian cities, Chennai doesn't have world famous monuments or tourist attractions. Yet, if you take your time to explore below its surface and delve into its distinctive culture, you'll grow to appreciate it. These places to visit in Chennai will give you a feel for the city and what makes it special.

Mahabalipuram Beach

Around an hour south of Chennai, you'll find one of the top beaches on India's east coast—Mahabalipuram (also known as Mamallapuram). The beach has a thriving backpacker and surfing scene but is also popular with tourists who come to relax at the resorts there . It's known for its stone sculpture industry, and is a great place to shop for these items and see artisans at work. Other attractions are the Shore Temple, Five Rathas (sculptured temples in the shape of chariots), and Arjuna's Penance (a huge carving on the face of a rock depicting scenes from The Mahabharata ).

Kanchipuram

Popularly known as a "City of a Thousand Temples", Kanchipuram is not just famous for its distinctive silk saris . Located about two hours from Chennai, on the main road to Bangalore , it was once the capital of the Pallava dynasty. Today, only 100 or so temples remain, many of them with unique architectural beauty. The diversity of temples is particularly noteworthy. There are both Shiva and Vishnu temples, built by various rulers (the Cholas, Vijayanagar kings, Muslims and British also ruled this part of Tamil Nadu) who each refined the design.

Kanchipuram, Mamallapuram, and Chennai are often referred to as Tamil Nadu's Golden Triangle for tourists. It's one of the best places to visit near Chennai .

Pondicherry

Pondicherry, a separate union territory on the east coast of Tamil Nadu, is not really a place you'd expect to find in India. It was a former 18th century French colony and still retains a distinctly French flavor. Those who feel in need of a break from India will enjoy the taste of French culture there and the relaxed atmosphere. Sri Aurobindo Ashram attracts plenty of spiritual seekers. The French Quarter and the Promenade, bordered by the Bay of Bengal, are the most happening parts of the city. Auroville is a popular day trip.

Ancient Madurai in Tamil Nadu is home to the most impressive and important temple in south India --the Meenakshi Temple . If you only see one south Indian temple, the Meenakshi Temple should be it. The city of Madurai is more than 4,000 years old and has remained a major center of Tamil culture and learning. During the heyday of its history, when the Nayak dynasty ruled, many magnificent temples and buildings with superb architecture were constructed. The 12-day Chithirai Festival , featuring a re-enacted celestial wedding of God and Goddess, is held in Madurai during April each year.

Thanjavur (Tanjore)

Thanjavur is best known for its astonishing Brihadeshwara Temple (known as the Big Temple), a UNESCO World Heritage Site made out of granite by Chola king Raja Raja I in the 11th century. It's an engineering marvel. However, the town is also a distinguished hub of arts and crafts in South India. Its various rulers -- from the Cholas in the 9th century to the Bhonsles in the 19th century -- all shared a common interest in patronage of the arts and crafts. Thanjavur continues to nourish artisans and performers.

Kumbakonam and Gangaikonda Cholapuram

ePhotocorp/Getty Images

Interested in seeing more superb temples from the Chola era? Kumbakonam and Gangaikonda Cholapuram, northeast of Thanjavur, have two Great Living Chola Temples that are part of the UNESCO World Heritage listing too. The royal temple at Gangaikonda Cholapuram was built not long after Thanjavur's Big Temple in the 11th century, when Rajendra Chola I relocated the Chola capital there in celebration of victory. Its design is similar to the Big Temple in Thanjavur but on a lesser scale, and it features an enormous stone Nandi (bull). The captivating 12th century Airavatesvara temple at Darasuram, near Kumbakonam, is covered in magnificent detailed sculptures. Kumbakonam abounds with temples too. Stop by the temple town of Swamimalai on the way to Kumbakonam to meet artisans who make bronze idols of gods and goddesses.

Famous for its old mansions (some of which are open to the public) and fiery meat curries, Tamil Nadu's Chettinad region is located about two hours from Madurai and Thanjavur. It can be explored on a day trip. Or, have a heritage stay at a mansion that's been converted into a hotel! The Bangala is a stately homestead located in Karaikudi, in the heart of Chettinad. The food is a highlight; seven courses are served on a banana leaf. Cooking classes and special packages for the exploration of local cuisine are also offered.

Tranquebar (Tharangambadi)

John Noble/Getty Images

Continue about two hours east of Kumbakonam to the Coromandel Coast and you'll come acroos the small town of Tranquebar, which was the first Danish trading post in India established in 1620. There you can see the remains of a 17th century fort, museum, and old church. The Bungalow on the Beach is an 18th century Danish colonial house that once belonged to the Governor of Danish India and has now been turned into a heritage hotel.

Pichavaram mangrove forest is one of the world's largest mangrove jungles (along with the Sundarbans National Park in West Bengal and Bhitarkanika in Odisha ). Yet, not a lot of tourists know about it. The mangrove forest is spread over 1,100 hectares and joins the Bay of Bengal, where it's separated by a lengthy sand bank. Apparently, there are more than 50 islands of various sizes, and 4,400 big and small canals! A boat will take you to explore them. Pichavaram is located about 30 minutes from the temple town of Chidambaram in Tamil Nadu, which is a bit over an hour north of Tranquebar and worth visiting too. It has a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva in his dancing form of Nataraj and special fire ceremonies.

Tiruvannamalai

Many people say that Tiruvannamalai, and in particular Mount Arunachala, has a very special spiritual energy. The holy mountain has been called the most silent place on earth, as it has the ability to quieten the mind. It's considered by Hindus to be the embodiment of Lord Shiva. Tiruvannamalai attracts both pilgrims and spiritual seekers to its Arunachaleswar Temple and Sri Ramana Ashram. The crowd swells on full moon nights and during the Karthigai Deepam festival in November when pilgrims walk around the holy mountain.

Kanyakumari

saiko3p/Getty Images

Kanyakumari sits on the furthermost tip of India, where the Bay of Bengal merges with the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean. It attracts a lot of pilgrims as it's regarded as the abode of virgin Goddess Kanya Kumari, an incarnation of Goddess Parvati (the divine Mother Goddess). Goddess Kanya Kumari is believed to have done penance there to get Lord Shiva to marry her. The distinguishing feature of this spiritual town is the Swami Vivekananda Memorial and towering statue of Tamil poet Thiruvalluvar, located on a rocky island off the shore. The Swami meditated there in 1892, before setting out on his religious crusade. In addition, Kanyakumari is one of the best places to see the southwest monsoon arrive in India, in late May each year.

Rameshwaram

Rameshwaram is a peaceful little pilgrim town, brought to life by the constant stream of people that come to bathe in its holy water, get a puja done to purify their karma and visit Ramanathaswamy Temple. The approach to Rameshwaram is dramatic, with two long bridges (one for trains and one for other vehicles) linking it to the mainland. Not far from Rameshwaram, the crumbled, windswept remnants of Dhanuskodi , a town destroyed by a cyclone in 1964, are eerie in their isolation. Adam's Bridge is about as remote as you can get. This chain of reefs and sandbanks almost connects India with Sri Lanka , which is only about 30 kilometers (18 miles) away.

Ooty was established in the early 19th century by the British as the summer headquarters of the Chennai government. It's a sought-after place to escape the summer heat. If you travel there during the peak season in April and May, do be prepared for it to be crowded though! Ooty's main attractions include the 22 hectare Government Botanical Gardens (a flower show is held there every May as part of the Summer Festival), boating on Ooty Lake, and climbing Dodabetta Peak for an excellent view of the Nilgiri hills. To get to Ooty, take the scenic Nilgiri mountain railway toy train from Metupalaiyam.

Dinodia Photo/Getty Images

Downhill from Ooty, Coonoor is where the world-class Nilgiri tea originated. The town is beginning to realize its potential as a tourist destination but remains a refreshingly quieter option than Ooty. Many of the things to do there revolve around tea. Upper Coonoor is an enjoyable neighborhood to stroll around, plus there are viewpoints and trekking spots in the area. One trail leads to the ruins of 18th century Droog Fort, used by Tipu Sultan.

ChandraDhas/Getty Images

The British created Kodaikanal as an alternative to Ooty. The town is nestled into the densely forested Western Ghat mountains northwest of Madurai. While it's not as developed as Ooty and retains some old-world charm, it still attracts a lot of Indian tourists during summer. Walking, trekking, boat rides and horse rides are popular activities. For peace and quiet, ideally stay out of town at a property such as Lilly's Valley Resort with its own nature trail.

Mudumalai National Park

Martin Siepmann/Getty Images

One of the top national parks in India , Mudumalai isn't far from Ooty in the Nilgiri district of Tamil Nadu on the border of Kerala and Karnataka. It's reportedly home to over 260 species of birds (including peacocks), as well as elephants, tigers, deer, monkeys, wild boar, bison, and leopards. Tree house accommodations are a popular feature at many of the properties around Mudumalai.

One of the best places to visit off the beaten track in India , Pollachi is a relatively unexplored destination that will delight nature and wildlife lovers. It's close to the Anamali Hills and the Kerala border. Tiruchirappalli (commonly called Trichy) is among the oldest inhabited cities in Tamil Nadu. Its ancient and diverse history can be traced as far back as the Early Chola Dynasty in the 3rd century BC. The city has had about 10 different rulers who have left their mark on it, including the British. However, it really flourished in the 16th century, when it was part of the Madurai Nayak kingdom. The eclectic attractions include an old fort, temples, churches, and markets.

  • Hogenakkal Waterfalls

separator

Hogenakkal waterfalls are a scenic amalgamation of rocks, water and mist located on Karnataka-Tamil Nadu border.  ‘Hoge’ means smoke and ‘Kallu’ means rock in Kannada. Hogenakkal essentially means smoke over the rocks, which is how it looks when there’s ample water falling over the rocks as river Kaveri enters Tamil Nadu from Karnataka.

Why visit Hogenakkal:

Hogenakkal gives a different experience during different seasons.

  • Visual Treat: Hogenakkal Waterfalls is a treat to the eye post monsoon season due to maximum water levels.  Multiple viewing decks are available to enjoy amazing views and gust of water through the rocks.
  • Coracle Ride: Post monsoon season it is possible to enjoy a coracle ride on the river in between two giant rocks with waterfalls on both sides. However, water sports and coracle ride activities might be suspended during this time due to safety concerns.
  • Fishing and Fish based dishes: Visitors to Hogenakkal can enjoy freshly caught fish based dishes
  • Oil massage: Local men offer oil massage to visitors on the banks of the river.
  • Swimming and taking baths are possible but not advisable except in designated areas due to strong currents and sharp rocks underwater.

Reaching Hogenakkal:

Hogenakkal makes an ideal day trip destination from Bengaluru. There are two major route options to reach Hogenakkal from Bengaluru . The shorter one is via Electronic City, Attibele, Denkanikottai-about 130 kms from Bengaluru. This route is narrower but has fewer tolls.

The other popular route is via Hosur, Krishnagiri and Dharmapuri which is a wider national highway. This route takes about 150 kms.

While one’s own vehicle or a cab is the best way to reach Hogenakkal, it is also possible to reach Hogenakkal using state run buses.

Basic accommodation, food and restroom facilities are available in Hogenakkal.

Behold the contrasting vistas as you cross the border to reach this hill shrine at Bandipur!

 alt=

A forest standing out between two human settlements in the Kerala-Karnataka border with people living entirely different lives on either side of it is like chalk and cheese. Both have them have their own distinctive language, dressing style, lifestyle and cuisine, among others. While one side of the forest is dotted with hillocks, mountains and ravines, the other is marked by expansive agricultural land. Even the climate is different as one side has rather nippy weather and the other side is pretty hot. While people live in thatched houses on one side, the other side of the jungle has concrete houses.

After travelling 20 km from Ponkuzhi in Wayanad in Kerala one can step into Karnataka and what’s striking in this short distance is how humans and landscape had been strangely furcated by nature. And during the 20 km drive, you will be passing through the Bandipur National Park, which has an even road amidst the verdant forest. The forest road, through which night travel is not allowed, is strewn with humps to prevent vehicles from over speeding as incidents of speeding automobiles killing wild animals were on the rise. The residents of Ponkuzhi converse in Malayalam and follow a typical Keralite’s lifestyle but when you reach Gundlupet things will change drastically. No one utters a word in Malayalam and the terrain is also totally different from Wayanad.

tourist places near tamil nadu karnataka border

While Wayanad is lush green with forests, mountains and valley, Gundlupet has a dry climate with vast tracts of land with the characteristic red soil of Karnataka.

Wayanad is the only district in Kerala that shares borders with both Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. Keralites and Tamilians coexist in border places such as Pattavayal and Thaloor where one could find Keralites speaking Tamil and Tamilians who are fluent in Malayalam. But this is not evident in Ponkuzhi and Gundlupet as a thick forest has made two communities complete strangers.

The national highway is devoid of teeming traffic. The agricultural land of Gundlupet will be replete with flowers of all hues as Onam arrives in neighbouring Kerala. Able-bodied sun tanned workers could be seen toiling hard on agriculture fields. A drove of bullocks, some pulling a cart, with long horns and tinkling bells around their neck could also be seen ambling along the road. People sitting on the cart would be wielding a long stick to guide the bullocks under the hot sun.

Gundlupet is the first town one enters after exiting the forest area and would arrive at a fork in the road – one leading to Mysuru and the other to Ooty. One can reach the Gopalaswamy Betta temple after taking a right turn after travelling for a while on the Ooty road.  The road leading to the temple may be narrow but it is smooth and picturesque with farmlands on both sides. The road, which was relaid quite recently after the temple became a tourist destination, will take one to a valley. A forest department’s gate will greet you at the valley and from there you can go up the hill only on a KSRTC bus.

The ticket rate is Rs 30 and earlier private vehicles were allowed to ply on the route but after the road was repaired only state-run buses can provide transportation service. As the bus huffs and puffs as it winds up the hill on the narrow road, you can get an awe-inspiring panoramic view of the farmlands and forest.

Once you reach the top of the hill, you can feel a nip in the air even if it is noon. The mist will partially cover the hill in the morning and evening even though it is sultry in the plains, but during winter and monsoon seasons, the hill would be gobbled up by the mist. The hill known as the Himavad Gopalaswamy Betta, is the highest peak in the Bandipur National Park.

The legend goes that sage Agasthya performed ‘tapas’ atop the hill following which Lord Vishnu appeared before the sage and promised to reside on the hill. The temple was built by King Ballala in AD 1315 and later the hill shrine was administered and maintained by the Wodeyar dynasty of Mysuru. Only a few people visited the temple about five years ago but now things have changed for the better. As the temple is surrounded by forests, there might be wild animals, including elephants, in the vicinity and the local people believe that wild jumbos visit the temple to offer obeisance to the deity.

One has to climb a flight of steps to enter the temple and could also find many vagrants, chanting ‘Govinda Govinda’, sitting on these steps and stretching their hands for alms. The temple had been built using huge stones and is painted in maroon and white colours. There is a precipice on one side of the temple and on the other side, you can see lush grass-covered hillocks.

The place of worship that is situated amidst the forest is a favourite destination of many travellers and many visit the temple to enjoy the beauty of the plains from the hilltop and not as part of a pilgrimage. The strong wind blowing from the forest is punctuated by the chanting of ‘Govinda’ and the blowing of a conch shell on the temple premises.

This Gopalaswamy deity atop the hills is considered as a saviour for mankind and wild animals.

Five Karnataka districts around Kerala, Tamil Nadu borders on Centre's radar for rise in COVID cases

For representational purposes

BENGALURU: Five districts in Karnataka are on the Centre’s radar for contributing to an increase in the number of daily new Covid cases over the last two weeks.

Dakshina Kannada, Kodagu, Uttar Kannada, Chamarajanagar and Udupi have been marked as ‘Districts of Concern’ by the Union Health Ministry.

“India’s active caseload has declined consistently, but some of the states have localised districts that are reporting higher cases which is a concern. We are in touch with the states and monitoring those districts closely,” said Lav Agarwal, Joint Secretary, Union Health Ministry on Tuesday.

While a majority of the districts are from Kerala, Karnataka is fourth in the list.

All the five districts in Karnataka are bordering Kerala and Tamil Nadu — the states that continue to report a high number of cases.

While the Karnataka government recently made RT-PCR negative report mandatory for those entering the state from Kerala and Maharashtra, it also imposed night curfew across the state and weekend curfew in border districts to control the spread of the virus.

Meanwhile, the Chamarajanagar district administration has made RTPCR report mandatory for travellers from Tamil Nadu too.

“We have intensified screening of people at several checkposts, like at Punajanur, Naal Road near Aradhanipura and Palar in Hanur taluk. We are keeping a vigil on tourist places in these districts. Contact tracing has been upped and we have ordered an increase in the number of tests in these and other such districts,” said a senior official from the state health department.

tourist places near tamil nadu karnataka border

Health officials said an order has been passed to form a Rapid Response Team (RRT) in each state.

In Karnataka, too, this team will be formed which will consist of a clinician, microbiologist and a member form a medical college (preferably from community medicine).

The team will monitor the genome situation across districts in the state.

In case of new mutations, the RRT would do contact tracing, epidemiological investigation, including number of cases, deaths in the community etc, and clinical assessment to look for any change in the severity of mortality.

Samples will be collected from family members and contacts in households that have tested positive to look for new variants, and necessary containment measures will be put in place.

The team will provide daily status reports to the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).

The Centre has reportedly asked senior health officials, including the principal secretary, health and MD, National Health Mission, to periodically review the situation and ensure sentinel surveys are held with adequate number of samples for genome sequencing and review the correlation between mutants and variants of concern with epidemiological and clinical data.
