A travel & lifestyle blog, 15 best places to visit in bhopal for first-time visitors 2021.

Almost a decade back, when I came to Bangalore for higher studies, I was surprised that many people did not know the name of my hometown. How was it possible? It was the capital of India’s central state after all.

Talk about the most popular tourist destinations in India and certainly Bhopal doesn’t find a place in this list either.

But being born and having spent a considerable time here, I can say Bhopal is one of the underrated tourist destinations in India.

Once known for the infamous “The Bhopal Gas tragedy”, the “City of Lakes” today has many accolades to its name. Bhopal is one of the greenest cities in India. It has also been rated as the cleanest state capital in India for 3 consecutive years (2017-2019). Apart from Natural beauty, Bhopal has a rich history too. Founded in 1707, this city has a rich cultural and architectural heritage.

In this blog, I am sharing a list of the top 15 stunning attractions within the city. If you are visiting Bhopal for the first time you must explore these fascinating places.

Must-visit Places in Bhopal

Upper lake (bhojtal).

One of the most popular and fascinating hangouts in Bhopal, Upper Lake is the pride of the city. Dating back to the 11th century, the lake was built by Raja Bhoj. Also known as Bada taIaab or Bhojtal, it is considered to be one of the oldest man-made lakes in India. Today the lake is sprawling with cafes and activities like boating, evening cruise, and many other water sports. There are many spots from where you can enjoy the majestic view of this iconic Lake. The most popular spots are

1.         The upper lake boating club,

2.         Drive through VIP Road

3.         Kamala Park, the royal garden overlooking the lake.

Tip: Visit the lake during the evening to enjoy the breathtaking sunset vista

Apart from the wildlife (which you can observe from a distance), there is a wide variety of flora too. A perfect place for nature lovers and adventure enthusiasts. If you are traveling with kids, then it’s a must-visit.

Timings: 6 a.m. to 7p.m. (time may slightly vary according to season). Van Vihar remains closed on Friday.

Bhojeshwar Temple, Bhojpur

Situated 28 km from the city, in the rustic settings of Bhojpur village is another architectural marvel. In the 11th century, the Bhojeshwar temple was built by Raja Bhoj. The construction of this temple was abandoned for unknown reasons and hence temple remains incomplete, which is something unique here. Interestingly, even today one can witness the site plan engraved on the rocks in an open area. This gives an idea about the construction planning and techniques used during those days. The sanctum of the temple enshrines a 22ft tall Shivalinga carved out of a single rock, which is the tallest in the world.

Apart from the Bhojeshwar temple, the area is also home to Parvati caves located on the bank of river Betwa, the 11th Century Jain temple, and an ancient dam (the remains of which can be seen even now). Read more about Bhojpur by clicking this link

Timings: 6.00 a.m. to 7 p.m. on all days

Entry fee: none

Time required for the visit: half a day

Tips: 1) Plan a visit to Bhojpur early morning to avoid heat and strong sun.

          2) Avoid a visit on Monday and other festivals (like Shivaratri) as the temple is usually crowded during these days.

3) You can plan half a day picnic (ample space is available near the river)

Shaukat Mahal & Sadar Manzil

Enter the chowk area and you will be greeted by a beautiful white & red building stretching from one corner of the road to another. Although not in very good shape (the restoration work has started) but this magnificent building represents the charm of the bygone era. What makes Shaukat Mahal different from other monuments in the vicinity is a unique blend of Islamic and European elements in its design.

Shaukat Mahal was constructed in the 1830s as a wedding gift to Sikandar Jahan Begum, the ruler of Bhopal. It was designed by a Frenchman considered to be a descendant of the Bourbon kings of France.

Next to Shaukat Mahal is Sadar Manzil, which served as the hall of a public audience for rulers of Bhopal. Surrounded by a picturesque garden, this resplendent red building reflects the grandeur of the past.

With around two million inhabitants, Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh’s capital, sprawls out from the eastern shores of a huge artificial lake, its packed old city surrounded by modern concrete suburbs and green hills. The nineteenth-century mosques emphasise its enduring Muslim legacy, while the hectic bazaars of the walled old city are worth a visit. Elsewhere, a couple of good archeological museums house hoards of ancient sculpture and the lakeside Bharat Bhavan ranks among India’s premier centres for performing and visual arts. Despite this, Bhopal is still known for the 1984 gas disaster, which casts a long shadow over the city.

Bhopal has two separate centres. Spread over the hills to the south of the lakes, the partially pedestrianised New Market area is a mix of shopping arcades, internet cafés, ice cream parlours, cinemas and office blocks.

Once you’ve squeezed through the strip of land that divides the Upper and (smaller) Lower lakes, sweeping avenues, civic buildings and gardens give way to the more heavily congested old city. This area includes the Jama Masjid and the bazaar, centred on Chowk, a dense grid of streets between the Moti Masjid and Hamidia Road.

The art galleries and museums are on side roads off New Market, or along the hilly southern edge of the Upper Lake. The Museum of Man on the city’s outskirts is the country’s most comprehensive exhibition of adivasi houses, culture and technology; the nearby Tribal Museum focuses on MP's adivasi groups.

From Bhopals’ lively Bazaar Chowk to the Museum of Man, here are the best things to do in Bhopal

#1 Explore the Bazaar Chowk

Bhopal’s lively bazaar provides a welcome splash of colour after the dismal, traffic filled streets around the railway station. Famous for zarda, purdah, garda and namarda (tobacco, veils, dust and eunuchs), it retains a strong Muslim ambience, with overhanging balconies intricately carved with Islamic geometric designs.

Each of the narrow streets radiating from the central square specialises in a different type of merchandise. For sale are Chanderi silk saris, bass drums and clarinets, tussar silk, silver jewellery and Bhopal’s famous beaded purses. At the heart of the market loom the rich red-sandstone walls and stumpy minarets of the Jama Masjid, built in 1837 by Kudsia Begum.

#2 Admire the Pearl Mosque on Imam Square

Southwest of Chowk Imam Square was once the epicentre of royal Bhopal. Nowadays, it’s little more than a glorified traffic island, only worth stopping at to admire the Moti Masjid on its eastern edge.

Erected in 1860 by Kudsia’s daughter, Sikander Begum, the “Pearl Mosque” is a diminutive and much less imposing version of Shah Jahan’s Jama Masjid in Old Delhi. It’s notable more for its slender, gold-topped minarets and sandstone cupolas than its size. Lining the opposite, northern side of the square near the ceremonial archway is a more eccentric nineteenth-century pile.

A fusion of Italian, Gothic and Islamic influences, the Shaukat Mahal was originally designed by a French architect. Unfortunately, both it and the elegant Sadar Manzil (“Hall of Public Audience”) just west on Sultania Road are now government offices and closed to visitors.

#3 Bear witness to the “mother of all mosques”, Darul Uloom Tajul Masajid

With its matching pair of colossal pink minarets soaring high above the city skyline, the Darul Uloom Tajul Masajid lives up to the epithet of “mother of all mosques”, as denoted by the extra “a” in its name. Whether Bhopal’s most impressive monument also deserves to be dubbed the biggest in India, as locals claim, is less certain.

Work on the building commenced under Sultan Jehan Begum (1868–1901), the eighth ruler of Bhopal. After the death of her domineering husband, the widowed queen embarked on a spending spree that left the city with a postal system, new schools and a railway, but which all but impoverished the state – and the Tajul Masajid was never actually completed.

#4 See some of the finest stone sculptures in Madhya Pradesh

The Birla Mandir Museum collection includes some of the finest stone sculptures in Madhya Pradesh, informatively displayed with explanatory panels in English in the main galleries.

The museum is in a detached mansion beside Birla Mandir, the garish modern Hindu Lakshmi Narayan temple that stands high on Arera Hill overlooking the Lower Lake. Aside from the museum itself, the temple gardens, which overlook the city, are a fine place to watch the sunset.

The exhibition is divided between Vishnu, the mother goddess, and Shiva. The Vishnu section contains some interesting representations of the god’s diverse and frequently bizarre reincarnations, while in the Devi gallery next door, a cadaverous Chamunda (the goddess Durga in her most terrifying aspect) stands incongruously amid a row of voluptuous maidens and fertility figures. The Shiva room, by contrast, is altogether more subdued.

RoughGuides tip: don't miss the replicas of the 3500-year-old Harappan artefacts encased under the stairs.

#5 Check out the artworks of Bharat Bhavan Arts Centre

The Bharat Bhavan Arts Centre is provincial India’s pre-eminent arts centre. Inside Goan architect Charles Correa’s campus of concrete domes and dour brickwork are temporary exhibitions as well as a large split-level permanent collection of modern Indian paintings and sculptures.

Rather incongruously placed amid the latter, look out for an eighteenth-century gilt-framed landscape by the Daniells – the uncle-nephew duo employed as a part of the Company school of painting during the Raj.

Bharat Bhavan has a gallery devoted exclusively to adivasi art, in search of which talent scouts spent months roaming remote regions. Among their more famous discoveries was the Gond painter Jangarh Singh Shyam. Many of his works are on display here, along with a colourful assemblage of masks, terracotta, wood carvings and ritual paraphernalia.

#6 Find out about India’s indigenous minorities at Museum of Man

The story of India’s indigenous minorities – the adivasi, literally “original inhabitants” – is all too familiar. Dispossessed of their land by large-scale development projects or exploitative moneylenders, the “tribals” have seen a gradual erosion of their traditional culture. The Museum of Man, or the Rashtriya Manav Sangrahalaya, is an enlightened attempt to redress the balance.

Overlooking New Market on one side and the majestic sweep of Upper Lake on the other, the 200-acre hilltop site includes a reconstructed Keralan coastal village. There is also a winding trail where each tribal group from the state has contributed an interpretation of its own creation myth.

A large exhibition hall draws on all the daily and ritual elements of the adivasi lifestyle, and dotted among the forest scrub are botanical trails, a research centre and a permanent open-air display of traditional adivasi buildings.

#7 See the traditional crafts and artwork of adivasi people at Tribal Museum

Best visited in conjunction with the nearby Museum of Man, the Tribal Museum is dedicated to the millions of adivasi people who live in Madhya Pradesh.

It houses well-curated displays, traditional crafts, artworks and replica homes of the seven main tribal groups in the state. The museum also stages regular music and cultural performances.

#8 See the regal white tigers at Van Vihar Zoological Park

A trip to the Van Vihar Zoological Park ties in nicely with a visit to the Museum of Man next door – keep the same auto-rickshaw for the whole trip. The stars of the park are a couple of regal white tigers, but there are also gharial, leopards, Himalayan bears and lions. You can get a longer look at the 207 species of birds by taking a boat from the jetty, 500m northeast of the park gate.

Bhopal offers a range of accommodation but shoestring options are thin on the ground. Even the dingiest dives will try to slap extra taxes and “service charges”, though if you object strongly they may waive them. Here are the best areas to stay in Bhopal.

If you’re not bothered by traffic noise and fumes, Hamidia Rd, Bhopal’s busy main thoroughfare, is the most convenient place to stay.

Shoestring options are thin on the ground and even the dingiest dives will try to slap extra taxes and “service charges”, though if you object strongly they may waive them.

Shamla Hills

Most of Bhopal’s top hotels are close to Upper Lake in the Shamla Hills area

Browse the best hotels in Bhopal.

Decent restaurants are relatively thin on the ground in Bhopal unless you know where to look. Here’s where to find the best restaurants. There isn’t much of a nightlife scene.

The larger hotels near the Shamla Hills serve uniform multi-cuisine menus. The canteens opposite the bus stand do thalis and subzi, rice and dhal for next to nothing.

From auto-rickshaw to taxi, it is easy to get around Bhopal. Here’s how to do it.

Most of Bhopal’s places of interest are so far apart that the best way of getting around is by autorickshaw. Taxis can be organised through your hotel, or MP Tourism, either at one of their offices or by phoning their transport department direct

The best time to visit Bhopal is during the relatively cool winter (Oct–March). However, during the coldest months (Dec–Feb) it gets a bit chilly at night and in the early morning, and you may need a sweater or light jacket, especially in the upland areas.

From April to June, daytime temperatures frequently exceed 40°C, but if you can stand the heat, this is the best time to catch glimpses of tigers in the national parks.

The increasingly meagre rains finally sweep in from the southeast in late June or early July until September making the roads even more difficult than usual, though it’s a good opportunity to see the waterfalls in the Bastar region of Chhattisgarh at their impressive full flow.

Upper Lake Bhopal Timings

Upper Lake, a magnificent, artificial water body, is one of the significant attractions of Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh. Also known as ‘Bada Talab’, this lake receives thousands of visitors all through the year. It is a popular weekend destination for the locals as well. The history of the lake dates back to the 11th century, when it was commissioned by the then ruler of Malwa, Paramara dynasty’s Raja (King) Bhoj. Hence, it is also called ‘Bhoj Tal’, locally.

Considered to be the oldest man-made lakes in the state, Upper Lake is also one of the main sources of water for irrigation and drinkable water for the residents of Bhopal. It is separated from the Lower Lake (Chhota Talab) , which is another artificial lake, by a bridge called Pul Pukhta or Lower Lake Bridge. Constructed across the Kolans River, the Upper Lake in Bhopal is famous for its scenic locale, shimmering water and the fantastic views of the sunrise and sunset from here.

Another attraction of the lake that draws huge crowds on a regular basis is the different water sports facilities on offer here by the National Sailing School. These include rafting, kayaking, parasailing, canoeing and water skiing. Besides these adventure water sports, tourists can enjoy paddle boating, boat cruise and motorboat rides on the lake. All these facilities along with food joints, aquarium, boat club and scenic walkway along the lake, make it a popular tourist hotspot.

History of Upper Lake in Bhopal

There is an interesting legend associated with the creation of this artificial lake. It is believed that once Raja Bhoj was diagnosed with a skin disease and none of the doctors were able to cure him. Finally, a saint suggested the king build a lake and fill it up with water collected from 365 tributaries. He said that taking a bath in that water will cure the king’s disease.

Accordingly, the king commissioned the construction of such a lake. However, his people who were assigned to collect the water from 365 tributaries could only manage to find 359 tributaries and bring water from them. It was then, when a Gond commander called Kalia, shared the location of an invisible river and its tributaries. The result of all this effort is what we know today as Bhoj Tal.

Architecture of Bhopal Upper Lake

Spread over an area of approximately 36.1 sq km, the man-made Upper Lake along with the Lower Lake together constitutes the Bhoj Wetland (a Ramsar site). On its south lies the Van Vihar National Park ; on the west lie the agriculture fields while on its north and east sides are human settlements.

Close to the lake is located the grand royal garden – Kamla Park, a popular tourist attraction of the city. There is an island in the middle of the lake, where a tomb of Shah Ali Shah Rahmatullah lies. A big statue of Raja Bhoj holding a sword has been installed on a pillar at one of the corners of the lake.

The Many Reasons the Jack Reacher Franchise Failed To Return

The unstoppable force seems to have cinematically stopped.

The Big Picture

  • Jack Reacher was a solid film, but the sequel fell short, leading to doubts about a third installment in the franchise.
  • The films offer a different, darker side to Tom Cruise's action hero persona, with more grounded action and violent combat scenes.
  • Despite lukewarm reception, a larger framed actor was cast in the Amazon Prime series, Reacher , which found success with fans and critics.

In the last couple decades, Tom Cruise has cemented himself as one of the most prolific and prestigious action movie leads, with major success in the Mission: Impossible franchise, a Top Gun sequel turned global sensation, and a few beloved one offs like Minority Report and Edge of Tomorrow . But he does have one franchise which seems to have been left behind; Jack Reacher .

The movie was followed by a sequel, this time reuniting Cruise with The Last Samurai director Edward Zwick . Jack Reacher: Never Go Back was a step-down critically and commercially, a disappointing result after a four-year wait. The sequel was released in 2017, and talk of a third movie gradually fell by the wayside as years went by.

A homicide investigator digs deeper into a case involving a trained military sniper responsible for a mass shooting.

'Jack Reacher' Solidified the Partnership Between Christopher McQuarrie and Tom Cruise

McQuarrie and Cruise have been creatively inseperable since they first worked together on Valkyrie. McQuarrie was pivotal in retooling Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol into the major success that it was, and has gone on to bring that franchise to unbelievable heights (literally) while also writing and producing nearly everything Cruise has done since 2008.

But the first movie McQuarrie actually directed for Cruise was Jack Reacher , which was released to positive critical reception and a solid box office intake. This first installment follows Reacher being pulled into the criminal investigation and defense of a military sniper who may have perpetrated a mass shooting, eventually finding a much larger conspiracy at play. McQuarrie did not stay on as director for the sequel, but he still maintained a production credit on the film.

'Jack Reacher' Distinguished Itself From Tom Cruise's Other Action Roles

The Jack Reacher films are not often a central point of reference for what Cruise can do as an action hero, but they do offer a different version of Cruise. It would be easy for this team to essentially re-skin Mission: Impossible's Ethan Hunt character into a different world and put little effort into distinguishing the character of Reacher. This is not the route they take, as these films are tonally and stylistically different, and Cruise does put in the work to make sure that Reacher doesn't feel like a carbon copy of Ethan Hunt, Maverick, or any of his other iconic roles.

The Jack Reacher series offered Cruise a chance to play a little darker, as these films do not maintain the playful tone of the Mission: Impossible franchise. Reacher is a more world-weary, dejected character. The films feel more violent, with the combat being depicted in a fashion which is more brutal than Cruise's typical register.

I Don't Think You Understand How Big Jack Reacher Actually Is

The tonal difference, and the reliance on more low-stakes, grounded action compared to the massive setpieces Cruise usually dazzles with, stand to make Jack Reacher worth watching, and the story, at least for the first film, is quite gripping . The villain, portrayed in a brilliantly wicked performance by legendary filmmaker Werner Herzog . You also get a great performance from Rosamund Pike as a defense attorney who is unwittingly roped into the plot. With a crew of talented actors working under the guidance of McQuarrie, a gifted action filmmaker, it is hard to go wrong with the first Jack Reacher film.

What Happened After 'Jack Reacher: Never Go Back?'

Jack Reacher (Tom Cruise) and Susan Turner (Colbie Smulders) looking offscreen in Jack Reacher: Never Go Back

Despite the first movie going over relatively well, it was not received as warmly by longtime fans of the book series. Some fans took issue with Cruise feeling miscast for the 6'5" tank of a man that Reacher was consistently written as. Child spoke of this around the release of the first film, explaining that "Reacher's size in the books is a metaphor for an unstoppable force, which Cruise portrays in his own way." This speaks to the strength of Cruise's action movie prowess, his ability to sell you on the notion that he really can do anything, but for some fans it still wasn't enough.

Child did eventually relent, agreeing that Reacher should be played by a larger framed actor, and their wishes were fulfilled when Alan Ritchson stepped into the role for the Amazon Prime series, Reacher . The series adaptation has been a hit with fans and critics, and a third season is currently in production . The success of the Ritchson-led series, which McQuarrie is an executive producer on, seems to have filled in the gaps that fans and critics noted in the film adaptation.

When the second film was relatively much less successful, these issues were harder to look past for many Reacher fans. The television series fulfilled what the fanbase wanted out of that story adapted to the screen, and Jack Reacher: Never Go Back remains one of the few unfortunate misfires in Cruise's impressive action resume.

Will There Be a Third 'Jack Reacher' Film?

While McQuarrie spoke of the possibility of a third film in the last few years, it seems to have landed fairly low on their list of priorities. This is not surprising considering McQuarrie and Cruise are in the midst of what may be the final stretch of the Mission: Impossible franchise while also juggling how they might move forward with Maverick after the massive global sensation that was the Top Gun sequel.

Cruise is also rumored to be interested in more auteur driven projects, throwing back to his earlier roles in films like Paul Thomas Anderson's Magnolia and Stanley Kubrick's final film, Eyes Wide Shut . That speculation is corroborated by the recent news that he will star in the upcoming Alejandro G. Iñárritu film , his first non-franchise role in years. He has also been circling a mysterious project with Doug Liman, and in addition to that, Edge of Tomorrow sequel talks are occurring . Taking all of this into consideration, Cruise may have a busy schedule these next few years, and with the lukewarm response to his outing as Reacher, it feels less likely that he'd return to this character for a third film. So the Cruise-era Reacher fans may have to settle for nothing more than a double feature, but at least there will be no shortage of Tom Cruise or Jack Reacher gracing our screens in the next few years , just not as one entity.

Jack Reacher is available to stream on Paramount Plus in the U.S.

5 upgrades that are always worth the money, according to someone who's been on 50 cruises

  • After taking 50 cruises , I've learned that some upgrades are worth the hype.
  • I always upgrade to a balcony cabin for views of the ocean and a quiet spot to chill.
  • The best coffee onboard is also an added cost, but it's worth it, in my opinion.

Insider Today

Over the past 15 years, I've taken 50 cruises with family and friends, trying out different ships, routes, and cabins .

Here are five cruise upgrades I think are actually worth the money.

The number one upgrade I pay for on any cruise is a balcony cabin.

Whether I'm headed to the Caribbean, the Mediterranean, or the Bahamas, I always pay extra for a balcony cabin on a cruise . I love that I can walk outside and see the ocean at any time.

Another perk is that it can be a quiet place to rest or read a book when the pool decks get too busy but I still want to be outside.

It's different on every cruise, but balcony cabins typically cost at least $100 to $200 more than interior staterooms.

I try to book specialty dining as soon as I can.

One of my favorite ways to treat myself on a cruise is by booking specialty dining .

Oftentimes, the options can range anywhere from $50 to over $100 a person, depending on the type of restaurant and meal.

A few of my must-do specialty restaurants include Palo for brunch on all five Disney Cruise Line ships, Raw on 5 on the Celebrity Edge ships, and Jamie's Italian by Jamie Oliver on some of the Royal Caribbean ships.

Specialty coffee drinks are a must for me.

Just like hotel coffee, standard cruise coffee generally isn't all that great.

After sipping on a cup in the main dining room or buffet to get me going in the morning, I usually head to the onboard coffee shop for something more to my taste.

It's usually always better than the complimentary coffee. Plus, it's whipped up by baristas who can make everything from lattes to coffee-based cocktails .

On a recent Disney Cruise , I went to Cove Café, an adults-only coffee shop, and found my new favorite coffee drink at sea: an iced salted-caramel coconut latte ($5.50).

Some cruise lines, like Royal Caribbean and Norwegian Cruise Line, have a Starbucks on some ships too, which is great for those who want their normal morning brew.

Thermal-suite passes are a little luxury I try to book as often as I can.

how to book cruise in bhopal

Thermal suites on cruise lines just getting better with newer ships. These serene spaces within the spa are filled with plunge pools , hot tubs, heated loungers, experience showers, and more.

On cruises longer than three nights, I try to book a length-of-cruise pass where I can come and go from the thermal suite as often as I want.

Prices vary depending on cruise lines and the length of the trip, but week-long passes typically cost between $120 and $300 a person.

It can be challenging to land the pass since there's only a limited number available, so I always head straight for the spa at embarkation.

Some unique activities are worth the extra cost.

how to book cruise in bhopal

As cruise ships get bigger, more "How did they get that on a cruise ship?" activities appear on decks.

For example, the newest Carnival Cruise Line ships have a roller coaster that goes around the top deck. It costs $15 to ride, and you get two laps around the deck.

Additionally, Norwegian Cruise Line's go-karts allow cruisers to race their family and friends around the track. It costs $15 a person for 10 laps, or you can pay $200 a person for an unlimited pass.

I'm more than willing to shell out a little extra cash to try these activities — even if it's just to say I've done it — especially since most of them are one-and-done splurges.
