Vintage RV: Oasis Travel Trailers “Clean, Cute and Cozy”

Oasis trailers were known for producing interiors that were very stylish with room for two adults and perhaps two children..

A spiffy powder-blue and white vintage Oasis trailer, spotted in Canal Flats.

Have you ever been to Bellflower, California? No, me either but one has to wonder if there are any remnants of the Oasis Travel Trailers manufacturing plant still evident in the city today? Here's another vintage trailer I found at a little used trailer outlet in the Village of Canal Flats recently.

Bellflower is a city in Los Angeles County, California, in the Los Angeles metropolitan area. It was established in 1906 and incorporated on September 3, 1957. As of the 2010 census, the city had a total population of 76,616, up from 72,878 at the 2000 census.

Bellflower was also home to the manufacturing facilities for the Oasis Travel Trailer company back in the late 1950s and 1960s—the golden era of classic and stylish camping trailers.

In 1957, Oasis Sales Inc. or Donhal began producing these attractive little vacation trailers. Their plant expanded in 1958. The company was headed up by President Donald Herfter and Vice President Dwight Avery.

Oasis Trailers were known for producing interiors that were very stylish with room for two adults and perhaps two children. The floor plan layout was well planned out and the little trailer was easy to pull and very comfortable to camp in. There was a large front window in the front that made it very enjoyable to sit and savour a good meal while looking at the beautiful view. (depending on where you decided to camp for the night)

One of the unique features of the Oasis was its beautiful ash wood interior. Each corner of the wood panel was rounded to give it a nice designer look.

The Oasis Travel Trailer company logo.

As mentioned, one of the largest front windows found on any travel trailer from this era came standard on the Oasis. Its exterior proved distinctive with its trademark “flame” two-tone paint job with polished aluminum accents.

As one vintage site observed, “The Oasis sported a rounded silhouette as typical for this vintage of trailer, but distinguished by the “ogee” profile of the front section below the dinette window. Later models (from about 1962 on) added a spoiler-esque feature to the rear profile, picking up on the curves seen in the paint job and front profile.”

Typical pricing in 1958 of an Oasis model was as follows: 8' wide, 15' 1 bdrm., $1,129; 17.5' 1 bdrm., $1,995; 21' twin beds $2,720; 25' 1 bdrm., $3,325; 27' 1 bdrm., $3,525.

Allyson Gross, an Oasis Trailer enthusiast calls her 1964 Oasis trailer—“camping-ready, clean, cute and cozy!”

So if you ever get to Bellflower, California, keep an eye for the roots of the Oasis Travel Trailer company.

We are selling a similar trailer, and are wondering what this one sold for.

I'm trying to find a trailer for my granddaughter she will be 16 next year and we have got her truck and she loves to camp but she is a glammy little girl. Is there anyone out there that could help me find one?

10 Vintage Trailers up For Sale just in time for a Summer Road Trip

' src=

S ee, you’re just like me– you see a picture of a vintage trailer and you click on it! And that pretty much sums up how I ended up on my latest internet treasure trove, Tin Can Tourists . A true appreciation society for vintage trailers, Tin Can Tourists was actually founded long before the internet came around, at a Florida holiday trailer park no less, in the year 1919. Committed to the celebration of classic RVs, they’ve been organising annual gatherings and information exchange ever since. With summer plans on the mind and road trip wanderlust in the air, I found the website’s classifieds section of particular interest. Trailers of all shapes, sizes and budgets are listed for sale here to drive your imagination wild.

Here are my top ten picks from the classifieds…

RV there yet?!

1. Ruby Red 1956 Platt Camper and Ford Victoria Combo

misc_recent_010a

Asking price: $30,000 . Trailer located in Northern Ohio. “Selling due to moving”.

This 13ft trailer has been done to match the car inside and out, including matching two tone paint w/chrome trim accent, and matching wheels on exterior, red and white tuck and roll upholstery on dinette cushions matching the car’s seating. Trailer has rear dinette seating that transforms into a king size bed. There is a digital flat screen TV facing the bed, w/crank up roof mounted digital antenna. There is a small but very effective air conditioner mounted in the rear of the trailer.

img_0533

Trailer is solid, and in great overall shape, and has lived inside since we have owned it for over 15 years. Car is a 1956 Ford Victoria hard top, a great runner and has been driven all over the country during our 15 years of ownership. This combo is a head turner wherever it goes, and has won awards in the process. We have loved this combo, and cared well for it all the years we’ve owned it, but a move to full time RVing dictates it must be sold for us to move forward. We wanted to offer this combo in the hopes it will be taken care of, and be used for vintage events as we have over the years.

2. 1950s Vagabond

vagabond

1950 Vagabond 30 foot, asking price $20,000 , located in Panama City, Florida.

Interior restored to its original condition with only a few upgrades. This trailer won best in show TCT April event NC. The outside needs stripping you pick your color.

(I would definitely stick with the stars and stripes!)

3. Classic 1955 Airstream

airstream

I couldn’t make this list without an Airstreamer.  Here’s one for sale  that’s in great condition on the outside but could do with a bit of sprucing up on the inside. Located in Sacramento, CA the asking price is $22,200 . Below is an example of the potential the Airstream has with a little creativity…

silvertrailer

This 1964 Airstream Bambi II 17′ “Betty Jane” was decorated by Kristiana Spaulding, an Airstream enthusiast who renovates vintage trailers and rents them out for events and shoots. You can see the renovation process here  and see the Airstreamers available for rent on her website, Silver Trailer .

Ready for your own DIY project? I found two Airstreams for sale, one here and one here .

4. Fixer Uppers

supersizetrailer

There’s always a DIY trailer project out there if you’re up for it. There’s this one on Ebay   and the one above is listed here . Or for something a little smaller, there’s one here .

For those considering a DIY trailer renovation project such as this, it might be useful to know that there are people out there that manufacture new “skins” for vintage campers (pictured above and below).  This seller  manufactures and sells new skins for seamless replacement sliding on vintage Shasta and Scotty campers…

trailerskin2

Aljo listing / Shasta, Scotty skins

5. Bohemian 1961 Bonanza Travel Trailer, “Hazel”

Asking Price: $10,500.00. Trailer located in Wellsville, Utah.

Hazel is 16ft from the tongue to the bumper—13ft body. She is 7ft wide and 8ft tall from the ground to the top—7ft tall body. As you can see from the pictures, Hazel has been completely restored from the studs up. We put a new roof on her 2 years ago and the tires have less than 20 miles on them. Hazel doesn’t have any water damage or leaks and is ready for you to start making memories in.

happtrails1

In rebuilding her, we decided to put a 4-post twin bed, including the box springs and mattress, in the rear and an antique chest-of-drawers. The bed and the chest-of-drawers are secured, but removable if someone was interested in making a business out of this trailer. With the shiplap siding on the interior accent walls and tongue-n-grove wood flooring, this trailer feels like home. The table also folds down into a full bed so you can sleep up to 3 adults. The outside is white with blue scallops and pink accents. Everything has been customized from the bench cushions, to the pink stove, green cabinets and the glass chandelier (removable while traveling).

6. Complete with a time capsule kitchen, a 1950 Spartan Carousel

spartan3

Asking Price $55,000 . Trailer located in Sacramento, CA.

Up for your consideration, this professionally, fully restored, 10’x50′, 1960 Spartan Carousel is the model that Spartan created to showcase the style of a new decade. From it’s newly enlarged exterior to it’s totally re-designed and spacious blond birch panel interior , the Carousel was the epitome of “Mid-Century Modern”. From the enormous window lined living room that merges into an unbelievable tour de force eat in kitchen and bar, to the large and breezy bedroom plus full sized , gorgeous pink and grey bathroom, this unit has been refreshed , refined and restored into one of finest examples of this super rare model!

10. 1956 El Jay, simplicity at its best

eljay

Professionally restored with an asking price of  $18,200 , located in Salt Lake City, Utah.

A vintage El Jay advert on Tin Can Tourists claims, “Built for fast travel over rough roads, insulated against New England weather, and time tested by hundreds of users.” This 1956 travel trailer proudly embodied the post-war attitude and workmanship that define products of this era. Production run was only in the  hundreds.

All About Aloha Vintage Travel Trailers

vintage oasis travel trailer

After purchasing my 1968 Aloha vintage travel trailer a few weeks ago I started to research information on the Web, curious about the brand, year… how others had decorated the inside.   Story of the $200 Vintage Trailer

All About Aloha Vintage Travel Trailers

I was (still am) a bit enamored with my little tin can that I got for a steal… and wanted to know all about her and her history.

The best resource by far was (and is) Tin Can Tourist’s Wiki page : Aloha Travel Trailers .

Quoted from the website:

“Aloha manufactured economic travel trailers from 1954 to 1970. They were a small comapany but quite popular.”
“The smallest trailer they made was 11′ and the largest they manufactured was 28′, at the height of their production in the 1960’s they were making 17-19 trailers a day, had several hundred employees, owned their buildings and even had a night shift to keep up with production.” “The main areas where they sold and marketed their trailers were OR, WA, ID and BC and at one point held 13% of the regional market which was ‘a remarkable amount’ for a small company. Their most popular trailer was the 15′ Beaver.”
“Because they were making their trailers for the NW market they had a few unique characteristics including a larger than normal drip rail and thicker plywood around the wheel wells to help deal with moisture.” “Their biggest technological innovation however was wrapping the framing stringers around the frame so there wasn’t just a box built onto a frame, this resulted in much higher stability than other travel trailers at the time.”

I was born and raised in Seattle, WA and also learned that Aloha trailers were sold in mass and used as extra housing for the over-load of tourists that descended upon the city during the 1962 Worlds Fair.

An easy way to search for photographs of anything on the web is to do a Google search and then click on ‘Images’ (default setting is ‘Web’).

When I did this search the first time I got a bit of a kick out of the fact one of my photos pulled in that I had put on this page: My New Vintage Travel Trailer .

More photos of Aloha trailers are here: Old Trailer.com Aloha Pics

This page on ‘My Vintage Travel Trailer’ website didn’t list my year of trailer, but has most other Aloha year, makes and models with information on the weight of the trailer and the hitch weight: Aloha Travel Trailers .

Old Trailer.com has photos of many vintage trailer decals and logos, with years and information (so you can then search to buy online!), fun to scroll through: Old Trailer.com Vintage Decals

Some on eBay: Vintage Trailer Decals .

What an amazing deal! We just bought your exact same trailer today for $600! We are so excited to fix her up! It is in great structural condition and I am just trying to redo to enterior to fit our family. I’m curious, did yours come with wallpaper? Ours has wallpaper covering almost entire enterior and painted white. We started peeling it to discover beautiful birch underneath. So now I’m trying to strip it all off. How is yours going???

That is an awesome deal as well! Mine was just really dirty, took weeks to clean and had a dried out bee hive attached to front window – obviously had been sitting for a long time. I had panneling on walls, not sure what type of wood but that original light-grey color. I painted the whole trailer to clean it up and give it some color (soft yellow/white/blue-green).

On the ceiling not sure what the nice wood (again, thin paneling but very newish) that had wallpapper. Ended up with a fun ‘splash’ painted yellow/white ceiling as was going to use burlap then it was just way too dusty to put up but now loved how it turned out, is funky and fun.

I have some paint touch-ups left and a new futon to buy but have done all the painting (saved original hinges and handles that I did not like then looked awesome with the new paint – score! The floor is the original linoleum, stove orignal Trav’ler (olive color) and works, removed ice box (trashed) to find a hole behind on the lower part of trailer – LOL – easy repair.

Has been fun, I love the trailer, going to put up a bunch of pages on blog about what I did when is finished.

Would be fun to interview you too about what you are doing etc. if you want! I want to see pics!!!

I have a 1961 Ford Motor home made by aloha trailer..

Hi Molly! Great to read about your Aloha trailer restoration project. We have some info on Aloha and other vintage trailers at http://www.myvintagetraveltrailer.com/ Keep up the good work!

Thanks and I have come across your site before and think it is great, have a new post coming up soon, would be a good one to include a link as it is about ‘learning about your vintage trailer’. Will send you a note via your site when is up, cheers, Molly

Hi there molly great find i have too alohas one is a 1955 compact and the other is 1955 15 foot.both need restoring.my 15 foot i payed 575 for my compact 950. Looking too sell my compact for 500 if you know any one interested. Love theys trailers i live in portland oregon.

I’m interested in you compact and also live in Portland. Let me know if it’s still available!

Thanks, Raymond

Hi, sorry so late but we did sell it. I hope you find one, there are many out there just be patient and keep looking!

best, Molly

I loved that little trailer, had to sell her so could help my son get into an apartment for college. Made a little profit, so that was awesome but I did do a ton of work getting her cleaned and cutened up so isn’t like I made a ton of cash. We got to travel in her for a few months, she towed awesome and was nice to have to relax in.

I think for my next trailer project it is going to be a newer model, maybe even a truck camper (I’m a big baby when it comes to towing) – mainly as I may want to stay put in places off and on and it is harder to do that with an older camper.

To sell your camper post on the Glampers on the Loose Facebook group – huge number of folks who are looking for just that type of camper at that price~! https://www.facebook.com/groups/glampersontheloose/

I just bought an 18′ 1967 aloha, but I need a new door and a couple windows. Any suggestions on where I can find them?

Sorry Brooke, I missed this! I had to replace our door (was not cheap, over $800 as it was custom built) – Camping World did the repair and were great. Windows I don’t know, I’d search online as there are suppliers for some parts, and of course you can always custom order windows to fit the trailer.

Have fun, I loved my little Aloha, did not want to sell but had to!

I have a vintage camping trailer for sale I just don’t know were to post it for sale if any one can guide me thanks

Craigslist is excellent – especially if you live near any major city but even in small towns you should get responses, many search the site for statewide listings, other states, etc.

Also – there is a facebook group called ‘Glampers on the Loose’ – and these folks are always looking for trailers to buy, if the price is fair.

Be sure to post there, or send me the info and I can post it for you!

We just bought a 1964, 16′ Aloha trailer. Very cute. Oven has never been cooked in. All the flooring and counter tops r perfect. Sink is (pink) yuck.. lol. Going to Soda blast the outside paint and polish the Aluminum. Were pulling it behind our Hot Rod for car shows.

Awesome and it sounds like you are going to have some fun with her/him/it 🙂

My dad is Glen Gordon he’s still around he was the founder and he and I could tell you more about these trailers then anyone

I have a 63 11’aloha that I was given and need to redo it appears as if the paneling was mailed to the studs and not the studs nailed too the paneling from the out side like I have seen on video, is that true?

Have no clue LOL. I just cutened up mine (paint, etc.) – did not need any major repairs. There are a bunch of Aloha groups on Facebook, for sure check those out and I am sure someone can help you. Best, Molly

Brilliant! I don’t own mine anymore but will pass that info on to anyone who is interested. Thanks for the comment, Molly

Jeff, Do you remember John (Cecil) Johnson?

Mybwige and I restore vintage trailers and just finished restoring a 1962 Aloha 12ft Trailer. It is basically a brand new 1962 Aloha. If I could add pics I would but if anyone is interested please let us know. [email protected]

Hi there, Not knowing if you are still out there, I still want to thank you for starting Aloha. We have a 1962 Aloha King 15’3 ft And am wondering if you know if the tongue weight of it is. Ive seen the trailer weight as being 1,690 and trailer hitch ( tongue?) weight of 180lbs. We finished restoring it and are now staring to enjoy the heck out of it . I just love it! if you know of any other Aloha information I would love to know where I can get it.

thanks! mario

I need to reinforce the walls of a 1966 Aloha to accommodate the weight of a food cart … Can you tell me what the walls are constructed with?

vintage oasis travel trailer

Introduction to Shasta RV Vintage Trailers

vintage oasis travel trailer

The characteristic wings were first added to the Shasta travel trailer series in the late 1950s and remained on trailers and even some motorhomes until the early 1980s, when they were discontinued. During this time period, the Shasta trailer brand was the most popular trailer brand in the United States. That is why, even after all these time, “Vintage” Shastas continue to be so popular and readily accessible everywhere you look.

By the beginning of 1963, Shasta had expanded to include a second manufacturing facility in Leola, Pennsylvania, and was producing five distinct trailer styles. Later in the same year, the all-new model 1500 was introduced to 5-star reviews and was quickly sold out. Once again, demonstrating to the general people that the value that has been put into the Shasta brand is well worth the low cost!

With the debut of the revised Compat model in 1964, the first of the “square-ish” Shastas was unveiled for the first time. Its leaner, cleaner lines were a foreshadowing of what was to come, and the general public reacted well to it as well. By the end of 1966, all of the Shasta trailers would have been redesigned to have a more contemporary appearance. Production facilities have also been established in Grapevine, Texas, and Battle Ground, Washington, among other locations.

During 1969, the brand new Loflyte was introduced to the market, and it quickly became a popular with the RVing audience. Because of the high demand for Shastas, a sixth factory was built in Columbia, South Carolina, to accommodate the increased production. The company had approximately 500 Shasta dealers around the United States by 1973, all of whom were providing all-new models with attractive interiors and all-new exterior style, which included strong striping down the sides. They were a little smaller than they had been, but they were still there!

For most of the 1960s and beyond, the “wings” on the rear sides served as a distinguishing feature. Coachmen Industries acquired the trademark. Before 2004, Shasta travel trailers were marketed by Coachmen. Only vintage trailers were marketed until 2008 so when brand was resurrected complete with its legendary shasta wings. There are no gas engines in the new trailers, which have been refurbished with art deco interiors. There are stainless steel microwaves, stainless steel sinks and mini blinds, hot plate cooktops, wet showers, and entertainment facilities – including a 19-inch LCD television – among its many amenities.

What makes the Shasta branded travel trailers best?

vintage oasis travel trailer

One of the most popular lines of trailers is the Shasta. Since the 1940’s, Shasta trailers have been particularly popular for their inexpensive cost, very light weight and big quantity of room relative to their tiny size. Easily identifiable by its characteristic wings and “canned-ham” design, the Shasta trailer was the greatest selling travel trailer brand from the 1950’s until the 1980’s. Shasta trailers immediately became a favorite of campers all across the United States owing to its inexpensive price and great craftsmanship and ancient models are still quite popular among antique trailer restorers and collectors today.

Shasta’s numerous versions provide a choice of interiors, exteriors, and degrees of self-containment which lets you to pick the type which best matches your likes and needs. With the table below, compare each antique Shasta trailer model to help choose the ideal one for you.

Shasta provides a large selection of high-quality, reasonably priced, lighter-weight floorplans that are filled with features and provide excellent value. Couples and families who want to get away from it all and enjoy some well-deserved rest and relaxation will appreciate our retreat. Shasta has been giving campers with unforgettable moments for years.

Their well-designed interiors are bright and spacious, including modern woodgrain cabinets, LED inside lighting, and counters with a home style aesthetic. It is impossible not to be impressed by the huge stainless steel household refrigerator. You might want to consider adding an optional freestanding diner with four seats or an LED fireplace to your interior design to liven it up.

vintage oasis travel trailer

Although the vintage canned ham campers may be regarded as cute and snug, the 21st-century version of Shasta’s trailer rolls forth grandeur and elegance.

The firm supplies two basic kinds in a range of lengths and options. Classic travel trailers come in lengths up to 32 feet long and link up to a hitch on the rear of your automobile. Fifth-wheel varieties grow to lengths of 39 feet, and both sorts come with slide-outs that may make the recreational vehicles feel more like an apartment – a long cry from the modest but attractive campers of yesteryear.

vintage oasis travel trailer

You’ll be “roughing it easy” when you burrow into the modern style of Shasta camper. How about sleeping in your own private queen bedroom suite while the kids are nestled in bunks in a room at the other end of the trailer? Gather the family for supper at the huge indoor kitchen with a dinette and modern adaptations that include a glass-top cook burner, microwave and pantry. Or, select a model with an extra outside kitchen/barbecue combo with a built-in entertainment system, and enjoy the beautiful weather. There are also options for outdoor showers to wipe away sand and dirt from a busy day before you step inside.

vintage oasis travel trailer

Kick back in dual rocking recliners to enjoy a movie on a flat-screen TV or, better yet, upgrade to theater-style seats with warming, massaging, cup holders and individual lighting. Opt for a roaring fireplace, motion sensor lighting, memory foam chairs and more.

Back to the day when, Shasta RV model floorplans maxed out at 19 feet. That meant you could traverse the United States freely and pull into any camping place from coast to coast. With today’s larger-sized campers, there’s lots to consider while deciding the size of a model.

vintage oasis travel trailer

If your plans entail traveling national parks from coast to coast. A 19-foot Shasta rv will get you into all apart from around 2 percent of park sites and offer you passage to most size-restricted routes. However, if your focus is camping in commercial RV parks with all the services, even the largest rig won’t be an issue.

The Shasta RV firm has perhaps more expertise than just about any other motorhome maker internationally. With many years in the RV market, Shasta is a very well motorhome brand that handles dedicated followers’ scores.

vintage oasis travel trailer

Although, a few does not know much about Shasta, and it’s vital to gather as much information as possible about an RV company before purchasing in its goods.

One of the nice things when you’re investing in an RV is that the Shasta has it all. If you desire larger rvs, then you’ll be in luck as Shasta RVs makes a comprehensive choice of huge motorhomes with numerous distinct floorplans to choose from. Bigger RVs are frequently more roomy, aerodynamic, have a home feel, and are filled with features and conveniences.

vintage oasis travel trailer

Undeniably Shasta RVs are among the most inventive, trustworthy, and resilient motorhomes currently on the market. As the firm has been in existence for more than 75 years, they’ve successfully refined several of their models. An interesting sidenote of all this is that large number of their motorhome models, notably their fifth wheel Phoenix series, enable all-season travel.

vintage oasis travel trailer

The phoenix family of RVs offers lasting insulating characteristics and remarkable construction qualities that allows them to be driven and lived in diverse weather situations. Which concludes that the Shasta RVs could possibly be the right camper for you as it varies lots of floorplans that may suit your taste. As it also makes a great investment for you, your friends, and your family.

Shasta Airflyte

vintage oasis travel trailer

The Shasta Airflyte was so successful that it was reintroduced in 2015 in an updated canned ham camper to commemorate the company’s 75th anniversary. This 16-foot trailer has the same window sizes, door sizes, and overall proportions as the 1961 model, and any modern improvements are put away so you’d never know you weren’t in the 1961 model. That is, until you switch on the 5,000 BTU air conditioner, crank up the Bluetooth audio, or microwave some popcorn. A wet-bath replaces the original closet in the design, and you may enjoy energy-efficient LED lighting both inside and out.

vintage oasis travel trailer

An extremely popular and sought-after Vintage travel trailer for your consideration. Shasta’s Airflyte is still a popular search term and (hopefully) buying option. Their reissue contained several recent upgrades that are still quite useful and current enough for most of our current equipment three years later.

vintage oasis travel trailer

Shasta has built a nearly perfect reproduction of their historic 1961 Shasta Airflyte 16SC Travel Trailer, complete with the distinguished Shasta wings, for 2015. Shasta then began in 1941, and for them to mark their 75th anniversary, they started making a limited run of 1,941 trailers in the all three authentic colors: Seafoam Green, Matador Red, and Butternut Yellow.

vintage oasis travel trailer

Shasta has meticulously replicated every minute detail, even down to the original Shasta logo magazine rack. To match the needs of today’s campers, the new Shasta Airflytes will also include an all-in-one bathroom with a toilet and shower in place of the closet.

The Airflyte “canned ham trailer” features a historic interior that is nearly identical to the original, but with contemporary utilities and plumbing. However, certain changes have been made: instead of a twin-size bed, the replica accommodates more people by providing for a full bed. There is also the Bunk bed option. This will have the same big bed/dinette and bunks as the last one.

vintage oasis travel trailer

It has Formica counter tops with a dog bone pattern formica, birch cabinet doors, and LED lighting. The bench seating in the dining room is made of tuck-and-roll pleather that matches the outside hue and appears to be ancient. The floor is similarly black and white vinyl.

vintage oasis travel trailer

This new travel trailer has a ton of storage and stylish finishes throughout! The Shasta weighs around 2,270 pounds and can be readily towed behind most SUVs, sedans, and minivans. So, with this 2015 Shasta AirFlyte 16, you may enjoy the better things in life.
