Why Take Our Advice for South America with Kids?

We’ve been traveling in Latin America for over 20 years and have travelled extensively in South America with kids!  In making our recommendations for world travel with kids, we are considering that you will be traveling with school-age children (e.g., probably 6 years upward) through to the early teens.  Not that we have experienced the teenage years, but we assume that in the teenage years, young people can do much of what their parents do and so it is not as necessary to only look at family-friendly options!

If you are traveling with younger kids (eg, younger than 6), we consider Peru and Costa Rica to be the most suitable for those with younger children.  For countries that we have not yet visited with children, I reached out to a couple of other travel bloggers for their thoughts and advice.

South America Family Holidays – Frequently Asked Questions

Why is south america a good family vacation destination.

To travel to South America as a family is to embark on an adventure like no other.  There are so many countries to choose from before you even begin.

Would you pick Peru, where you can climb to Machu Picchu and see the Sacred Valley and Cusco?  Or perhaps you would prefer the Lake District of Chile, exotic Costa Rica’s stunning coastline, or lively, historic Colombia?

Whether you want to explore the Amazon, marvel at the majestic Iguazu Falls, experience the surreal landscape of the Atacama Desert, take a trip into Patagonia, or party in a Brazilian city, South America will provide plenty of fun, intrigue, and adventure for every member of your family.

What are the Highlights of a Family Vacation in South America?

What makes for the best family vacation South America has to offer really does depend on the family itself.  Meaning the individuals that make up that family.

For one person, sampling freshly prepared Peruvian street food might be a particular highlight.  While for others, their best memory may consist of a day spent on a picture-perfect beach.  Will it be jungle trekking in the Amazon for you, that moment you spotted an exotic bird in the trees above, or a visit to a Colombian coffee growing zone?

Is it Safe to Travel to South America with Kids?

The issue of safety varies by country and region.  In some areas, acclimatization will be your biggest concern, while in others you should consider and minimize the risk of contracting tropical diseases before you travel.

Those trekking the Inca trail with kids or visiting Cusco can take steps to assist with acclimatization.  While if the Peruvian jungle features on your itinerary, then it’s wise to take precautions against contracting malaria or yellow fever.

For those traveling with little ones, we’d recommend Peru in South America or Costa Rica in Central America as the ideal first South American destination.

South America Family Vacations – The 8 BEST Places to Visit in South America with Family

Exploring the huge continent of South America promises a thrilling adventure that your family will never forget.  You could explore the ancient ruins of Peru and the amazing wildlife of the Galapagos islands.  South America brims with a rich variety of landscapes, wildlife, cultures, and cuisines to delight all ages.  Here are the BEST places to visit in South America with family !

family tour south america

Visiting the Amazon is one of the best places to visit in South America with kids.

Typically you will need from 3 days to a week to make the most of the Amazon – surely the mightiest of jungles.  Most Amazon trips can be added to other holidays mentioned here (especially Machu Picchu!) and typically last from 3 to 7 days.  The more time you can spend, the more you will get out of the trip.

For all Amazon jungle holidays with children, you should consider the Malaria considerations – take a look at our Traveling and the Risk Of Malaria in Kids .  We can personally recommend the Tambopata region, which is easily accessed from Cusco.  The journey to Iquitos is also a fascinating one and will require a fair amount of river travel along the way.

Recently we returned from a family vacation to South America, which included a tour of the Peruvian Amazon.  Read The Amazon with Kids; A Refugio Amazonas Review for all the details.

Tambopata & the Madre De Dios Region

What we like about the Tambopata region of the Amazon is that it can easily be combined with a trip to Cusco , with nearly all flights making a stopover in Cusco before flying onto Puerto Maldonado.

There are also a number of lodges that have programs specially designed for children, amongst which we can recommend the Posada Amazonas .  Alternatively, reach out to me on socials or email as Posada Amazonas has three different lodges.  I can recommend which suits your kids best, depending on their age.  We recently returned from a visit to one of the Posada Amazonas lodges so I can give great recs.

south america with kids

Iquitos is most certainly a romantic-sounding place, landlocked, in the heart of the Amazon.  Many jungle tours (especially those in the more pristine jungle) require a decent amount of river travel to arrive at the lodge.  We also recommend at least spending a night in Iquitos if you can.  It’s got a unique frontier feel and the river port is not only vibrant but eye-opening!

For families, we have been recommended the Tahuayo Lodge and their Tahuayo River Amazon Research Centre.

To give the kids a bit of a buzz, they also have the longest zip line in the Amazon.  This is a great family vacation South America adventure destination.

We are very fond of Peru.  We think it makes the most excellent family vacation in South America with kids.  Cusco in particular is a very child-friendly city and was our home for a number of years.

As well as the famous sights of Machu Picchu and the Sacred Valley, we recommend the south coast and Arequipa.  Check out our full recommendations Must See Places for Your Peru Family Vacation – Plus FAQs, Pro Tips & More

Peru is extremely well organized for tourism and this makes it an excellent destination for a family vacation South America.  With just two weeks, you can truly see some iconic sites, including both Machu Picchu (one of the seven wonders of the world) and the Sacred Valley .  Although we are biased (because we lived there for many years) Cusco also makes a great child-friendly base.  Check here for our guide, Cusco With Kids .

If you have enough time, we would also thoroughly recommend Arequipa and the South Coast of Peru as a little known but thoroughly unique family vacation destination.  Check here for our post,   A Guide To Peru’s South Coast With Kids .

The main health consideration or concern with the Cusco and Machu Picchu region is acclimatization.  We have had a lot of experience with this.  Read here for our   Tips For Acclimatizing To Altitude With Kids .

Getting Help to Plan Your Peru Family Vacation

As I mentioned earlier, I lived in Cusco for many years where I co-founded the adventure trekking agency Apus Peru and later created its sister brand K’anchay Peru .  K’anchay is a Quechua word meaning to shine, brighten or to illuminate.   At K’anchay Peru we’ve created thoughtful and intuitive itineraries including this Peru family tour .  Also, read our fun facts about Peru to get you excited.

South America family holidays are best begun in Buenos Aires.  There’s a lot to keep everyone busy for a few days.  Argentina is a huge country with so much to see and do!  For a first-time family visit, we’d focus on Buenos Aires which has enough to captivate for more than a few days.

A visit to colorful Caminito in La Boca with its brightly colored buildings and enjoying the tango is a must.  You can even take tango classes!  Also, for any aspiring Maradonas, a visit to the Boca Juniors stadium is essential.  Alternatively, you could head to the River Plate stadium.

For those more inspired by Eva Peron and famous historical figures, a visit to the Casa Rosada and Recoleta cemetery are ‘musts’.  High on our bucket list is also taking a Gaucho (Argentinian) cowboy tour to learn more about this unique Argentinian subculture.

Here is a great list of parks in Buenos Aires for those with smaller children .  If you had more time for South America family holidays in Argentina we’d also explore Salta and Mendoza.  We are totally inspired to visit Argentine Patagonia after hearing from fellow travel blogger Melissa of The Family Voyage .

Argentine Patagonia

Patagonia is one of those bucket list destinations.  However, most families assume it’s not an accessible vacation for them to take with young children.  The great news is that Argentine Patagonia is very manageable – if expensive – with kids.

We visited when our kids were 3.5 and 6.  I would not recommend taking kids younger than that.  Patagonia is enormous, so there’s a lot of travel involved plus long days of hiking trails and other excursions – see a sample itinerary for Patagonia with kids .

Bus travel in the region is very affordable and high-quality, but some rides are as long as 24 hours.  For those long distances, we opted for flights despite the relatively high cost.  We saved by only renting a car for one of our three stops in Patagonia.

Our favorite experience in Patagonia, and maybe the world, was trekking in El Chalten.  It’s a unique little village nestled in the mountains of southern Argentina, and it’s truly a hiker’s paradise.  There’s no cell service and many businesses only take cash.  It’s a great place to disconnect from the outside world.

The bus route to El Chalten from the larger city of El Calafate drops you right in the village, where you can walk to all of the accommodations, restaurants, gear shops, and trailheads.  Most of the trails are pretty rugged, but there are many options that offer a good stopping point part of the way up and were reasonable for our active 6-year-old to tackle while his younger sister rode in a backpack carrier.

Some kids may not be willing or able to handle that intensity of hiking until closer to 8+.  Be sure to know your kids’ limits before embarking on the trip.  For kids who aren’t up for miles and miles of daily hiking, they’ll definitely enjoy an up-close visit to the penguins of Peninsula Valdes.  This area is near Puerto Madryn, on the Atlantic coast in northern Patagonia.  It has a completely different feel than the rest of the region!

If you are adventurous, we truly believe it makes for one of the best family vacations South America has to offer.

 Chile With Kids

Of all the Latin American countries we have visited, Chile would have to be one of the most kid-friendly destinations to explore.  Chileans love children and little ones are treasured.  You will find the staff at hotels, restaurants, and attractions keen to help with anything you need.  Chile is a safe country in Latin America and has diverse regions with attractions suitable for kids of different ages.

If you are visiting with kids for the first time, you could find plenty of Things to do in Santiago to fill up a week or more.  Santiago has lots of attractions designed for kids, such as Fantasilandia amusement park for adrenaline rides and a Kids’ Zone for younger children, and Mirador Interactive Museum, which has science displays and exhibits to keep young minds occupied.  If your kids are artistic, be sure to visit Artequin so they can participate in creative hands-on arts and crafts activities.

Another activity the kids will love is riding the funicular in Santiago Metropolitan Park.  There is also an adventure park with a climbing wall, suspension bridges, and a zip line.  Then there’s the Santiago Planetarium, which also has an excellent astronomical park.  If your kids are older perhaps they will enjoy going horse riding in the Andes.

Santiago is also a fantastic place to go with kids in winter.  There are many ski resorts you can visit as a day trip.  The largest ski resort in South America (Valle Nevado) and the continent’s oldest (Portillo) are good spots for a family skiing or snowboarding vacation.

Keep an eye out for free or significantly reduced admission rates to events and performances.  The downside of traveling with kids in Chile is that public toilets are not always clean.  It pays to carry toilet paper, soap, and hand sanitizer.  With a little preparation, Chile can be one of the best family vacations in South America.

Bogota is the ideal place to start a Colombian adventure.  Cable cars and colonial architecture are among its charms.  Other musts include the Medellin coffee-growing zone, Cartagena, and the beaches of Taganga or Playa Blanca.

Sure, Colombia was once the home of narcos, the FARC, and all kinds of kidnappings.  However, it is also the home of some of the most warm-hearted and lively people in the Americas.  Also, not to mention, beautiful landscapes and rich history.  Colombia is definitely a place to add to your South America with kids bucket list.

Mumma traveler made several trips to Colombia during the 2000s where she was privileged to explore various parts of this stunning country.  That is why she is adding it to this list of family adventure holidays.  Without a doubt, Colombia is a place that will inspire the adventurous travel family’s wanderlust.

Bogota, with its truly amazing Gold Museum, cable car, and colonial architecture is a good place to start your exploration. We are super excited to have visited in 2023 with kids aged 4, 9 and 13.

Assuming that you only have 2 or 3 weeks, after Bogota we’d explore the coffee-growing zone around Medellin.  We loved visiting Salento and Manizales and used Medellin as a gateway.  While in Medellin don’t miss the Botero Artworks or the Pablo Escobar Museum .

In the north of Colombia, Cartagena is a must for a few days for its old-world charm – without a doubt one of my favourite cities in the world.  Take a look at this great guide of Where to Stay in Cartagena .  From there you can either head to the beautiful beaches of Playa Blanca or across to Taganga.

Ecuador and The Galapagos Islands

Ecuador and the Galapagos are some of the best places to visit in South America with kids. This can be one of those bucket list, once in a lifetime holidays.  So, we’d recommend this for when the children reach double figures or beyond.

Ecuador offers one of the crown jewels of incredible wildlife experiences, in our experience.  A trip to the Galapagos is truly a trip of a lifetime and will make a wonderful family vacation South America.  We’ve researched such a trip thoroughly and decided to wait until our kids are about 10-12 years old.  Our reasons are eminently practical: we want them to be safe and responsible on board a boat and have great swimming skills.  Finally, we want the kids to fully appreciate what they are seeing.  Galapagos cruises (at least those that are responsible, ethical, and environmentally conscientious) don’t come cheaply!

However, more recently we’ve read that if you don’t want to take kids on a cruise you can base yourself on one of the islands such as Santa Cruz island and make day trips.

This sounds like a much better option and is explained comprehensively in Galapagos Islands with Kids .

In addition, Quito is a charming capital city.  It is also a great base to explore indigenous markets nearby or even some hikes or volcano climbing.  We can’t wait to explore the lush green mountains of Equador with the children, especially the gorgeous town of   Banos , famous for its hot baths.  Another beautiful and educational destination in Ecuador is beautiful Cuenca , in the Southern Highlands.

Ecuador and the Galapagos islands are definitely a great destination for a family adventure holidays.  However, we would opt for our kids being slightly older.

When people think of Brazil, they imagine a party destination with lots of carnival and samba.  However, Brazil is a fascinating and family friendly vacation destination.

For one, the wildlife is diverse.  Children can have the time of their lives spotting wild animals in their natural habitat.  At Praia do Forno, one of the prettiest Brazilian beaches , you can go on a fun boat trip to spot whales and sea turtles in the region.  The bird species that dive for food are also incredible.

For two, the flora is impressively majestic and unique.  Most major cities have botanical gardens with towering trees and interesting, colorful plant species your kids have probably never seen before.  The Rio de Janeiro and the Curitiba Botanical Gardens are two lovely green areas where children can learn and see so much!  While the Curitiba Garden is more about plants, the Rio de Janeiro Garden is a great place to spot marmosets, turtles, toucans, and small parrots.  My niece and nephew, 5 and 3, we ecstatic from seeing those animals.

Last but not least. Brazil has an incredible “collection” of kid-friendly museums most tourists are not aware of.  South American, African, European, and Brazilian art and culture are showcased in many institutions around the country.

From Brazil’s history to soccer and more, children can learn a lot on this vacation.

Bruna from I Heart Brazil

Uruguay is the perfect destination to visit in South America with kids.  Not only is Uruguay the safest country in South America to visit, according to the world peace index 2022, but it’s the perfect place for a family vacation in South America.

A must-visit Colonia del Sacramento.  This UNESCO World Heritage Site, with its cobblestone streets, quaint old buildings, and vintage cars, is like stepping back in time.  Make sure you visit the lighthouse, which offers panoramic views of the town and the river.

If your family loves wildlife, consider heading to Punta Del Este for a boat trip to see the playful sea lions on Isla de Lobos.  The town is also known for its beautiful beaches, such as Playa Mansa and Playa Brava, and the fascinating sculpture of La Mano (The Hand).

For a real off-the-beaten-path experience, venture inland to the gaucho (Uruguayan cowboy) country.  In towns like Tacuarembó and Durazno, you can visit estancias (ranches), where your family can learn about the gaucho lifestyle and even try horse-riding.

From historical sites to natural wonders and lively towns to tranquil countryside, Uruguay is a family-friendly destination that caters to all tastes and ages.

Central America includes beautiful, peaceful, child-friendly Costa Rica, a compact country full of gorgeous beaches, jungle, and wildlife. We’ll be spending some time there this year and literally can’t wait!

There’s Mexico, which we once visited with a 4-month-old; the underwater cenotes are not to be missed.

We know Nicaragua well!  The highlights include the colonial cities of Leon and Granada, the unspoiled coast of San Juan del Sur, and the volcanic island of Ometepe.

The Most Kid-Friendly Destinations in South America

P erhaps you hadn’t been thinking of South America as a family travel destination . The huge continent is actually a fantastic place to explore with the kids — full of otherworldly landscapes, sand dunes, dinosaur sites, sky-high cable cars, national parks, and super beaches. For parents with an adventurous streak, there’s no better place to bring the family. From Ecuador down to Uruguay , here are some of our favorite places.

Playas de los Monos in Ecuador

If Ecuador isn’t on your bucket list of South American destinations, be prepared to move it to the number one spot. Besides being the mother country to the Galapagos Islands , Ecuador is a relatively small country with a mainland bursting with dazzling landscapes. It’s particularly easy with kids because the country is so simple to navigate by highway, airlines, and extensive bus routes.

An added bonus is that Ecuadorians adore children, and it shows. Fees related to tourism are generally waived for kids in most places, shop owners often offer freebies like a lollipop or stickers for little ones, and it’s customary for a man to give up his seat on a bus for mothers.

Ecuador is only about the size of the US state of Colorado , yet within its boundaries travelers can discover Cotopaxi, one of the world’s highest active volcanoes; Quilotoa, a two-mile wide water-filled crater; the Andes range; the Amazon rainforest; and the city of Baños. Baños is famous for its natural hot springs, waterfalls, and plethora of outdoor adventures like zip lining, bungee jumping, canyoning, and rafting.

Kids getting their faces painted

In addition, the coastline boasts more than 1,000 miles of pristine Pacific beaches that are lush and tropical in the north, and have towering cliffs, sandy hillsides, or mangrove forests in the central and southern sections. Playa los Frailes, in fact, has been called one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Completely devoid of infrastructure, the virgin moon-shaped beach with a clear, aquamarine cove is protected by the Machalilla National Park .

As for the capital city, Quito is a dazzler with a picturesque historic center including the 377-foot-tall Roman Catholic Basilica del Voto Nacional , an impressive cable car ride that reaches almost 13,000 feet in elevation that kids will love, and the nearby Mitad del Mundo park , which celebrates the equatorial line and is packed with museums geared toward adults and kids. Families can do all sorts of fun science-related activities there to explore the phenomenon of this delicate global location.

Ecuador’s two other major cities, Cuenca and Guayaquil, both have beautiful historic architecture, extensive pedestrian zones and park networks, and enviable waterfront locations. A side note: When traveling to such high-elevation destinations like Quito or Cuenca, take it easy for the first couple of days so you and your kids can adjust to the altitude.

Family taking a selfie in front of Machu Picchu in Peru

It’s impossible not to think of Peru without conjuring up images of iconic Machu Picchu…and the days and days of trails that lead to it. But Machu Picchu isn’t just for trekkers and outdoor enthusiasts. It’s also very easy to do with kids, if you bypass the trail routes. After flying into Cusco from Lima, a train takes you to the small town of Aguas Calientes. From there you can check into your hotel; our kids were crazy about the treehouse-style cabins at the Rupa Wasi Eco Lodge .

The next morning you can bus it all the way to the top of the citadel, the most Instagrammed spot of Machu Picchu. Let the kids roam around as long as they like, and then bus it right back to town again. Just be sure to buy your Machu Picchu tickets and train tickets on Peru Rail or Inca Rail in advance. You can buy the bus tickets for the last leg from the kiosk when you first arrive in Aguas Calientes.

Cusco itself, an ancient Inca capital and then a major center of Spanish colonial power, is an exceptional city to explore on foot with kids of every age. The main historic center of the city is blocked off to traffic on the weekends, allowing families to gather and kids to play beneath one of the most jaw-dropping city backdrops in South America. If you go during the rainy season, the throbs of tourists will be reduced to a manageable level. You might get lucky and be there when the city presents a family focused daytime Carnival celebration, allowing kids to get in on the chalk dust and party foam action without any parade chaos or drunken partygoers.

Peru is a big country, and there’s more to see than Inca ruins and Cusco. Check out the often-bypassed inner cities, like Trujillo, which has ancient Moche pyramids and desert landscapes. Or visit Ayacucho, with its 33 historic churches and the most important battlefield related to Peru’s war of independence, or Arequipa, packed with colorful monasteries and convents, historic plazas, and inspiring architecture.

Along the coast, a must is the Paracas National Reserve , where kids can paddleboard alongside flamingos or take kitesurfing lessons in the bay. Families can take a day cruise to Ballestas Islands — also known as the “ poor man’s Galapagos ” — to see blue-footed boobies and sea lions. Not too far off from Paracas, a tiny oasis village named Huacachina rests in the middle of the highest sand dune fields in South America. Let the dunes cast their spell on your kids while exploring by sand buggy, sandboard, or paddle boat.

Last but not least is Lake Titicaca on the border with Bolivia, the highest navigable lake in the world. Here, the last remaining indigenous families still reside on their hand-made floating islands and reed boats. You can take guided tours to visit this unique community and interact with the few people who still practice this aquatic lifestyle.

Two kids on salt flat in Bolivia

Bolivia is a secret gem, rarely making a mark on the family travel circuit. But, listen closely parents: We think that will soon change. Bolivia is the most centralized country in South America, wedged between Peru, Brazil, Paraguay, Chile, and Argentina. Although the country can be more difficult to navigate than other South American countries, the remote and rare experiences within are worth the extra effort.

Most travelers come to Bolivia to explore the Salar de Uyuni, the world’s largest salt flat, covering over 4,000 square miles. The unimaginable landscapes are a magical white bliss of glistening salt particles and natural pools, fascinating to kids and parents alike. Beyond Uyuni, the other highlight is dinosaur tourism. Family travelers will delight in all things dinosaur — including museums, theme parks, and real-life dino footprints found both in cities and remote places.

Although there seems to be dinosaur sites everywhere, two of the most notable are Torotoro National Park in Potosí province and the Parque Cretácico near Sucre. You can visit Torotoro National Park by guided tour from a small, remote town of the same name, hiking through desert and canyon landscapes in search of authentic dinosaur prints. Inside the national park, more than 2,500 unique prints dating back to the Cretaceous period (120 million years ago) have been documented. Kids can see the prints exactly as they were found in the field, untouched and untampered with. Guides tell the stories of how dinosaurs lived in the area and why they might have disappeared, and also allow you touch, stand next to, and lie inside the prints.

Cretacico Park in Sucre, Bolivia

The second key location, Parque Cretácico, is located just three miles outside of the beautiful city of Sucre. This fully interactive, modern Jurassic park has been built around the concrete mine where a wall of than 5,000 dinosaur prints from more than 15 species was accidentally discovered in the 1990s. It is believed to be the largest collection of dinosaur prints in the world. The park is full of replica size, animated, and audio-enhanced dinosaurs that visitors can walk next to and beneath. It also has several museums, a video presentation, and an artificial dig site where kids can pretend to be archaeologists.

Other Bolivia highlights include the historic city of Sucre and the sky-high capital city of La Paz. Sucre, nearly 400 years old, is packed with antique white buildings topped with Spanish clay rooftops, stunning colonial churches, and quaint cobblestone streets. It’s known as one of the most affordable places on the continent to take Spanish lessons or salsa dance classes. La Paz, for its part, has the highest and longest extensive cable car network in the world, reaching 13,000 feet in elevation over 27 miles — and growing. Other La Paz attractions are Valle de la Luna, a field of large eroded rock formations similar to the USA’s Badlands, and the Witches Market, where “black magic” products are openly sold — including shrunken skulls, dried animal fetuses, feathers, frogs, and more.

Pumalin Park in Chile

Chile seems to have some of the most well developed infrastructure in South America. With its widespread tourism, incredible national parks, and extensive paved highway networks, it hardly feels like a developing country at all. Even so, with a country 2,653 miles in length and with regions that are so far apart, careful planning is important to nail down the best places to visit with kids.

In the far north, near the Bolivian border, the Atacama Desert is an icon. Situated between the Andes and the cold Pacific Ocean, it’s one of the driest places on the planet. Its startling and unique landscapes are often compared to the horizons of Mars or the moon. You can marvel at its geysers, sandboard down dunes, gaze on pink flamingos in its salt flats, and even go on nighttime astronomy tours in one of the best dark sky places on the planet. All of these tours are easy to arrange from the town of San Pedro de Atacama.

In the Bío Bío region in the center of the country, you can base yourself in the city of Los Angeles and venture to nearby wild landscapes like the impressive Laja Falls, four gushing waterfalls that form a horseshoe shape; Nevados de Chillán, a resort for volcano and glacier skiing; and the secret beach of Playa Ramuntcho. The International Guesthouse El Rincon is the perfect base for families — with cabins, suites, and eco-domes in a forest setting just north of Los Angeles.

Chile also shares the region of Patagonia with Argentina. One of the most scenic and family friendly portions of the remote south is Chile’s Los Lagos region. With easy access from Puerto Montt, travelers can visit the northernmost regions of Patagonia, with its fjords and glacial lakes. We recommend the ultra-modern Pumalin Park , Chile’s largest national park covering nearly one million acres. The Amarillo area there has an excellent array of quality camping facilities and plenty of hiking trails appropriate for kids to see glaciers, temperate rainforests, and wildlife.

The Cathedral Basilica and Sanctuary of the Lord and the Virgin of the Miracle in Salta, Argentina

The romantic tales of international immigrants, a living cowboy culture, wine country, and picturesque colonial cities are enough to lure many curious travelers to Argentina. But to appeal to the discerning crowd of kid travelers, parents will be thrilled to discover some intriguing places beyond Buenos Aires and grape vines.

Start in the far north, in Salta, a stunning historic city that feels more like Europe than South America. Expansive plazas full of fountains, grassy knolls, and towering trees are surrounded by ornate colonial architecture and gloriously wide sidewalks — which are perfect for strollers. The city is safe for walking and is best appreciated on foot. Stay in the Tres Cerritos neighborhood, where boutique hotels neighbor affluent residences from a hilltop location that mimics Beverly Hills in California. Choose the Kkala Boutique for its heated pool, family lofts, and in-room jacuzzis. Don’t miss the Parque San Martín with a duck pond and paddle boats, large streets, and countless playgrounds.

A little farther south, the traditional ranchlands of Tafí del Valle in the Tucumán province are saturated with Argentina’s renown cowboy culture and ranches. At Estancia Las Carreras , the kids can milk cows, ride horses, and play in pastures and creeks. They can even learn the art of making empanadas and artisanal cheese.

Further south, Argentina’s Rio Negro province is locally famous for a 130-mile stretch of virgin beaches accessed by the Route 1 or the Camino de la Costa. Many of the beaches like Punta Perdiz offer incredible ocean coves with shell covered beaches and calm water. Camping is free and families could spend days swimming, snorkeling, and paddleboarding alongside Magellanic penguins.

Further south, the Valdes Peninsula, a tip of land off the northeast coast of the Chubut province, is the easiest place to see the ocean wildlife of Patagonia. On a simple safari trip (independent or guided), the whole family can get within arms reach of Magellanic penguins, elephant seals, and southern sea lions. You might also see the endangered right whales, killer whales, and several dolphin species that frequent the protected coves and beaches of the Valdes Peninsula.

The tiny country of Uruguay is tucked between Argentina and the southern shoulder of Brazil. Located on the Atlantic coast, Uruguay boasts progressive politics and beautiful beaches . Along with Chile, it’s also one of the safest destinations for family travel in South America. The coastline stretches 410 miles, with a variety of sleepy surf towns north of Montevideo like La Pedrera and Barra de Valizas.

What Is It Like Traveling In South America With Kids?

South America sits at the bottom of the list for popularity among parents in our Family Travel Support Group on Facebook . In fact, only family travel in Antarctica had less interest in our polls. But, I’m going to let you in on a secret. South America is one of my family’s favorite places for family travel.

First of all, the continent is huge, and it’s made up of a spectacular mix of Indigenous cultures that are steeped in history that dates back long before the arrival of British, Spanish, and Portuguese explorers.

The food throughout South America is absolutely phenomenal. With ethnic fusion mixed with European flavors, it’s hard to beat the incredible variety of dishes found throughout the continent. In fact, Lima, Peru , alone is home to three of the world’s top ten restaurants!

We’ve been traveling with kids for 10 years now, and South America was the third continent that we visited as a family. I’m sure that our tips and guides for the countries we have visited will help you plan your family travels on the South American continent.

5 Incredible South American Vacation Ideas for Families

South America is a perfect destination for families looking for a mix of nature, culture, and relaxation. Here are some of the best options for families

Vacation spots in South America offer soaring mountains, incredible wildlife and beaches , some of the greatest natural and manmade wonders in the world, and spectacular cultural highlights from food to art. So, it's easy to see why South America is at the top of many family travel wish lists.

There's a treasure trove of fascinating countries to choose from that are easy to visit with kids, ranging from the wildlife of Ecuador to the foodie scene of Rio de Janeiro. Before you book, be sure to check the local COVID protocols for each place. Here are a few of our favorite trip ideas for every type of adventurous family.

Train to Machu Picchu in Peru

Families who want to see one of the Seven Wonders of the World will delight in this Peruvian adventure.

Who it's for

The ancient city of Machu Picchu high in the Peruvian Andes is high on many adult travelers' bucket lists, but it's an easily attainable adventure trip for families, too. A well-established train and bus route up into the lush green mountains makes it easy to ascend up to the Lost City of the Incas.

The Inca Rail is especially great for kids—spring for the luxury option and you'll receive a full meal on the scenic glassed-ceiling ride! Once up top, you'll encounter spectacular views, the sacred Temple of the Sun, and a llama or two. Hiring a private guide will add dimension to the ruins and help kids picture the civilization that existed in this arcadia long ago. Round out a trip to Peru with a stay by the beaches of Lima in the Miraflores neighborhood where colorful hang gliders fill the sky.

Ideal age range

Although it's easy to reach the entrance to Machu Picchu, once you arrive there's a lot of walking and climbing. Because of this, the trip is best for kids who don't need a stroller and have some stamina, so ages 6 and up will typically do best.

Know before you go

Both Machu Picchu and the neighboring city of Cusco are at high altitudes (8,000 to 11,000 feet), so make sure you and the kids stay hydrated and plan on slowly acclimating to the area. Note that you'll receive a visa (free) when you arrive in the country; yellow fever vaccinations are recommended , but not required.

Explore Nature in Ecuador

Ecuador is a natural paradise filled with animal and plant species found nowhere else on Earth. Families who want to travel with experienced guides will be sure to get the most out of touring through this country's abundant beauty.

Kids will be amazed by the gigantic tortoises, blue-footed boobies, and playful sea lions that fill the equatorial waters of the Galápagos, but to see all the wonders, you need to travel by ship with a group of other travelers.

That's where Adventures by Disney comes in. We're big fans of their small group travel that caters especially to families, and on an Ecuador trip, they'll lead you to spots such as the Galápagos Tortoise Reserve and also to jungle canopy walks and nocturnal rainforest excursions in the Amazon; adventures your kids will remember forever.

To truly experience all the wonders of the Galápagos and the Amazon, you'll need to immerse yourself in a watery cruise experience where kayaking, snorkeling, and expedition hikes are all part of the excitement ; big kids, 8 and up, particularly those who can swim proficiently, will enjoy these types of adventures the most.

No visas or inoculations are required to visit Ecuador, however, some vaccinations—like hepatitis A and typhoid—are recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Be Immersed in Argentina Lifestyle

Traveling through Argentina is an adventure-filled experience that will deepen both your family's appreciation of natural beauty as well as introduce a unique new culture.

Families who want to create their own organized itinerary can hit all that Argentina has to offer. From the Patagonian steppe, with its age-old gaucho customs, to the surging waters of Iguazu Falls, Argentina will wow everyone in the family. In the cultural hub of Buenos Aires, you can immerse yourself in the essence of the Argentine lifestyle through the taste, sounds, and rhythm of the city.

There's truly something for everyone in the family. Naya Traveler creates tailored trips to the South American jewel so that your itinerary can be as wild—say hiking through the vast rugged Patagonian landscape—or as mild—imagine picnicking in the verdant Lake District—depending on your family's interests and disposition.

If you're sticking to the cities and the Falls, this trip is good for all ages; if you're traversing Patagonia, kids should be able to hike without getting easily tired, so think more 8 and up. You don't need to get a visa or any special vaccinations to visit Argentina , though some are recommended depending on where exactly you're traveling.

The weather in this Southern Hemisphere country is best for exploring in the sunny "spring" and "summer" months, September through March (in other words, don't go in the "winter," our summer, June through mid-September). There aren't any required vaccinations for travel to Argentina and visas are not needed.

Relax on the Beaches of Uruguay

Families who want to soak in the surf and sand will love the stunning beaches and arty, bohemian vibe of Uruguay.

Considered one of the safest spots for families in South America, the coastline in Uruguay stretches for 410 miles with beautiful beaches everywhere you look along the water. In Montevideo, the kids will especially be excited to see La Mano, the massive hand sculpture that reaches up out of the sand at Playa Brava, a white sand beach that's fun to visit even after you've gotten the shot for Instagram .

Base yourself at the family-friendly Sheraton Colonia Resort which has a kids' club and massive pool and offers easy access to the beautiful beaches as well as all the cultural highlights of Uruguay.

A beach vacation is easy for everyone, so this South American getaway is good for kids of all ages. Just be sure to pack sunscreen and hats to protect your family's skin from the lovely, warm sun.

You don't need a visa or any vaccinations (though hepatitis A is recommended for most travelers) to visit Uruguay . Take note: The Southern Hemisphere's reversal of seasons means it's a balmy 80 degrees in December, making it a great winter holiday warm-weather getaway.

Eat Your Way Through Brazil

Brazil offers more than just gorgeous beaches, lush rainforests, a vibrant culture, and festive carnivals. Foodie families and adventurous eaters will have a blast on this culinary adventure.

Do you and the kids love to try new food and explore your surroundings by sampling the local cuisine? Then, a trip to Brazil will tantalize your taste buds while introducing you to a fascinating new culture. Culinary tours based in Rio de Janeiro also lead you to sites such as Corcovado and Sugarloaf Mountain to let you experience the hidden gems of the region.

You'll find local wine or craft beer for grown-up palates and savory pão de queijo , sweet brigadeiros , and bean-based feijoada stew for all of you. Have the experts at South America Travel help you create your foodie itinerary so you'll be able to experience all the delicious tastes without having to do any of the legwork.

For foodie explorations, non-picky eaters ages 5 and up would be perfect for this trip.

You don't need a visa to visit Brazil , though some inoculations are recommended by the CDC. And, as with other South American countries, the weather is warmest in our "winter" months, but with this itinerary, you won't need perfect weather to have a blast.

Wonderful overall, but there were some difficulties such as extra events (One Day Hike Machu Picchu and Rainbow Mountain Hike) being cancelled. There were strikes and protests that caused changes to schedule, so I was pleased how tour changes were skillfully managed. I'm waiting to hear about refund which is my only concern. I enjoyed people and G Adventures Tour Leaders very much.

PERU EXPRESS - 10 days (Lima- Cusco & Puno) with Domestic Flights

When I inquired about the hikes to Humanitay Island & Rainbow mountain, I was given the impression it was easily doable as there is plenty of time & horses could be hired. No mention was made about the problems that could arise due to the high altitude & that there were steep sections that we would have to navigate ourselves. Assurances should not have been so easily given without mentioning the specific difficulties of altitude acclimatisation and the inability to depend on horses for the whole trip. Otherwise well planned and reliable.

Highlights of North Argentina Tour

Highlights of North Argentina

The tour was excellent. Prior to the tour Daiana was fantastic and Maria was also super helpful. We were picked up and delivered to our hotel by Sabrina who gave us lots of helpful information.our BA tour guide federico was terrific. We also really liked our hotel Hitel Classico. We then flew to Mendoza. Our pick up was great. We had a great tour to the wineries with an excellent guide. All the wineries and the lunch were very good. The next day we did the cookery class which was also fantastic. We flew to Salta. The pick up was all good and the hotel was excellent and full,of character. Tuna pick us up the next day and took us through the Andes to the salt flats and on to Purmamarca. He was great. The accommodation in Purmamarca was a great little bungalow. Happilynthe had out the heating on for us arriving as the weather was poor. We enjoyed our free day in Purmamarca. The next day Tuna picked us up to take us to Hornocal and the. Back to `salta. He is a fantastic guide. Lots of information and also very entertaining. He is an excellent driver which was needed as we came down into Purmamarca in dense fog. We flew to Iguazu. Again the pick up was great and we really liked the hotel with a swimming pool. The trips to both sides of the falls were very good indeed and the highlight was the boat ride. We flew back to BA and were picked up very efficiently. The same driver picked us up the following morning to take us to the Buquebus ferry. The whole experience was excellent. My only comment is that the hotel in Mendoza wasn’t as good as the others. Staff were very nice but the room was a bit run down. There was no fridge and the safe didn’t work. It didn’t spoil our trip at all but it was a bit below the standards of the other hotels. Overall a really good trip and we would highly recommend it to anyone else.

Machu Picchu and the Amazon National Geographic Journeys

National Geographic was not associated with our tour, but G adventures did an excellent job. Our guides were knowledgeable, friendly and incredibly helpful on every part of the tour. They all went far above and beyond the minimum, from helping us get laundry done to caring for members of our group who became ill. Every detail was planned for and the tour ran smoothly from start to finish. I will gladly book with G adventures again the future.

I was a little afraid to book a tour package in a country that I have never visited. Looking in this platform I checked some options, finally I decided to organize with Inkayni Peru Tours, since the first moment they showed their professionalism, organizing all the trip in the best way. How I booked this package with domestic flights, they organize that according to my international flights, I needed and extra night in Lima and they were really kind to adjust the internal flights according my requirements. Alexis is an excellent tour guide with lot of information, I liked so much this trip, thank you Inkayni for this memorable experience.

Our guide Dianna was marvelous. She went out of her way to accommodate a wide variety of needs. The hikes could be more descriptive as the one in Tayorna national park was difficult for some of the guests. I would include a massage in Baricharra as we asked it the hotel had accomodations for massages which were terrific.

If this is your first time in Peru, this tour is definitely recommended. Sights are amazing, planning and timing are smooth, which is not an easy job considering the extend and logistics in Peru. Museum of Tomorrow

Set in a massive futuristic building, the Museum of Tomorrow reveals a glimpse of life in the future. The museum combines science with art, and displays digital ideas rather than objects and artefacts. Discover exhibitions on the Cosmos, Earth and Tomorrow, with interactive experiments and new initiatives for a sustainable world.

The Museo Inka is one of the world’s best museums on the Inca Empire. It’s filled with ancient mummies, crockery, jewellery, textiles, models, goldwork and the world’s largest collection of queros (ceremonial wooden drinking vessels). You can easily spend a few hours immersing yourself in the extraordinary world of the Incas.

Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes

Originally built in Paris, the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes was moved to Buenos Aires in the early 1900s. Housed in a beautiful building, the museum holds the largest collection of art in Latin America and an excellent collection of European art, spanning from the Middle Ages to the 20th century.

Best museums in South America

Our tours of South America take you to all the best museums across the continent, from the vivid history of the Incas, to a fascinating look into the future.

Empanadas are one of the most-loved South American dishes. Their name means ‘enbreaded’, or wrapped in bread, and they’re made by folding dough over a stuffing of meat, cheese or vegetables. They can be baked or fried, and you’ll find these tasty treats on streets all over the continent.

The Brazilians have been making moqueca for the past 300 years, and it’s the quintessential dish of Afro-Brazilian culture. Originally from Bahia, the dish is made from fresh fish mixed with coconut milk, tomatoes, garlic, onions, lime and coriander. Our Local Specialists will show you their favorite places to taste this delicious stew.

Traditional Asado

An asado is a traditional Argentine barbecue and a beloved part of the country’s culture. You’ll find a variety of meat such as beef, chicken, pork and chorizo, grilled on a parrilla (open fire). Served with red wine and salads, you can find asados on street corners across the country.

A Home Away from Home: Family Travel in South America – For All Ages!

A Home Away from Home Family Travel in South America

Believe it or not, South America can most certainly serve as your home away from home on your next family vacation! The previously held myth that South America might not be the best place to travel with young children has quickly been dispelled over the past couple of years – and for a good reason! Activities, experiences, important life lessons, and lasting memories abound in South America for children of all ages.

And there is nothing we love more than working with families to design ideal and exciting getaways. You can spot exciting wildlife in the Amazon or The Galapagos, horseback ride with real-life cowboys in Argentina , ski the slopes of Patagonia, commune with pristine nature, connect with local communities, or bike through larger-than-life Andean landscapes, just to name a few of the incredible possibilities!

In honor of International Day of Families this year, we would like to share the following four considerations to get the most out of your family travel adventure to South America. From family-friendly accommodation to guides who work well with children and a plethora of interactive activities, these details will take your trip from “something you do as a family on vacation” to “the memory you will relive together over your entire lifetimes!”

1. Accommodation for the whole family

Accommodation for the whole family

Quite a few hotels in Peru, Ecuador, Argentina, Chile, Colombia, and Bolivia naturally understand the importance of families sharing the same space when they have some downtime away from exciting tours and excursions. Because, after all, family is an essential cultural cornerstone throughout South America!

Of course, connecting or adjacent rooms are almost always an option, but some of the best South American family lodgings can be found in family casitas (quaint houses or cabins) or family apartments within three to five-star properties.

For instance, an excellent option for a family stay is Sol & Luna in the Sacred Valley town of Urubamba in Peru. Sol & Luna is a luxurious Relais & Chateaux property that simultaneously puts family first. Their superior family casitas are designed for families of four, with a king bed on the first floor and a magical winding staircase to the second-floor loft with two full-size beds. They also have Peruvian Paso horses on their property, which are super friendly, and guests are welcome to visit the stables during their stay.

Another fabulous property that accommodates families in the Sacred Valley is El Albergue in the sleepy town of Ollantaytambo. El Albergue is right next to the train station to Machu Picchu. They have an exceptional room category called the El Albergue Casita. This roomy home-away-from-home includes two bedrooms, a bathroom, a small private kitchen and dining area, and a breathtaking terrace surrounded by their bountiful organic gardens!

2. The perfect guide

Family travel Kuoda Guide

When it comes to booking a trip to South America with children, we recommend considering primarily private guided service. And this isn’t a challenge when booking with Kuoda because we only work in private service – except for all-inclusive jungle lodge programs or Galapagos cruises, in which you will embark on excursions in small groups. We also have a team of diverse and dynamic guides – many of whom are amazing with kids!

Considering this person will be responsible for bringing each destination to life, they need to be great storytellers and naturally engage with curious children as young as three or four and with classically cynical teenagers alike. Your guide’s goal should be that every single family member becomes enchanted, in one way or another, with the radically diverse scenery, wildlife, cuisine, and culture within South America.

3. Family-friendly activities

Family travel activities

The sheer number of family-friendly activities that South American destinations offer is astonishing. For those who love to cook with their kids, you can make your own super-creative chocolates from scratch in Cusco or learn about an 8,000-year-old Andean barbeque technique called Pachamanca , burying veggies and a variety of meats deep into an underground oven and piling hot stones on top.

Or, if you bond with your kids over interacting with wildlife, learning about new animals, and even interacting with them from a respectful distance, then the Galapagos Islands in Ecuador or the Amazon rainforest in Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, or Bolivia should be on your bucket list!

Another fun aspect of traveling as a family in South America is that adventure activities aren’t just tailored to adults. For instance, several white-water rafting spots are perfect for children as young as ten and stand-up paddleboarding on Lake Piuray, approved for children as young as three! Avid skiers can also hit the slopes in July or August in Patagonia (Austral winter), in the family-friendly ski resorts of Portillo or Valle Nevado in Chile, or Cerro Catedral in Bariloche, Argentina.

4. Staying active

Family travel Activities

It goes without saying that one of the trickiest aspects of traveling with the entire family is fidgety boredom. That’s why we recommend and make sure to pack every day with different activities to avoid staying in the same place for too long.

You can pair distinct activities in the same day within one excursion, such as kayaking or stand-up paddleboarding on a pristine Andean lake in the morning and enjoying a scenic horseback ride in the afternoon – and these are interchangeable with countless other half-day activity options in the Sacred Valley. Or you can pair two or three or more destinations/countries within the same itinerary.

You can venture to Ecuador and Peru in a 12 to 14-day trip, Chile and Argentina in a 7 to 10-day trip, or Peru and Bolivia in a 12 to 13- day trip. Or for summer vacations of 3-4 weeks, you also easily visit up to three different countries! But suppose you only have 8-9 days to travel, during the winter holiday break, for instance. In that case, you can pair the Amazon jungle with Machu Picchu in Peru!

We wish all of you and yours the very best International Day of Families! And we hope with this essential guide to family travel in South America, you feel inspired to consider Peru, Ecuador, Bolivia, Colombia, Chile, or Argentina for your next family adventure! Contact us today to learn more about getting the planning started and building your ideal family vacation.

Crafting an independent journey in South America is an option, yet the region's unique planning challenges and intricate transportation options often mean that booking a tour is a more convenient choice. Given these considerations, many travelers find that booking a tour is a better choice. Entrusting travel professionals to manage transportation, lodgings, activities, and meals ensures a relaxing and enjoyable experience, allowing you to embrace the trip fully.

You can find many situations where tours in South America are more cost-effective compared to an independently planned trip. The affordability of a tour depends on factors such as the destinations covered, level of luxury, and duration. Each tour and independent trip is unique, but tour providers often offer competitive prices that match the luxury level of an independent trip with the same amenities. On average, a tour in South America costs $306 per day, with many tours priced below this average, although some are higher. Prices for tours in South America range from $22 to $65,190. When comparing costs with independent travel, it's important to consider that guided tours typically include accommodations, transportation, guides, meals, tickets, and even more. To accurately compare prices, it is essential to understand the inclusions of a tour package and thoroughly research the costs of independent travel in South America.

Group Tours vs. Independent Travel in South America

Choosing between an organized tour package and independent travel can be a challenging decision for many travelers. However, when planning to travel in South America in 2024 or 2025, it is worth considering the array of enticing deals and sales available in organized tour packages. These comprehensive packages offer excellent value for money, encompassing accommodations, transportation, entry tickets, food, and other essential travel requirements. Furthermore, with guided tours, you benefit from the expertise of knowledgeable guides who provide valuable insights and eliminate the need for meticulous trip planning. On the other hand, independent travel offers greater flexibility and control over your travel plans, enabling you to adjust your schedule and budget according to your preferences. It also provides the opportunity to immerse yourself in local cultures and explore hidden gems that are often excluded from tour packages.

When planning your tour to South America, it is highly recommended to make your booking well in advance, preferably several months or more ahead. While some individuals secure their tours up to a year in advance, our experience suggests that reserving your spot around 6 to 9 months before the departure date is far enough. It is important to note that many tours tend to fill up quickly, and early booking ensures your place on the trip. Moreover, booking early often comes with the benefit of significant cost savings, as tour companies frequently offer early booking sales and discounted prices. On the other hand, it is worth considering that tour companies may occasionally offer last-minute discounts for tours that have not reached full capacity. However, waiting for such discounts poses the risk of not securing a spot on a fully booked tour.

When it comes to tours in South America, the size of the group can vary significantly, accommodating anywhere from 1 to 999 travelers. On average, a tour consists of 23 participants. It's important to remember that the quality and price of a tour are not solely determined by its group size.

When considering a tour to South America, it is recommended to allocate around 9 days, which is the average duration of organized tour packages. Tours in South America can last anywhere from 2 to 131 days, or sometimes longer. Although longer tours may be more expensive initially, their cost per day tends to decrease. Moreover, longer tours allow for a more extensive exploration of various destinations, making them a better overall value.

With rare birdlife on the Galapagos Islands and endangered species in the Amazon alongside numerous flourishing national parks, South America is an animal lover’s paradise. Here, your child can meet fabled creatures such as the huge Galapagos Tortoise while also coming across animals they never knew existed: the extraordinary Amazonian Pink River Dolphin, for example. Whether you head to the coast, the jungle or the Andes, a family wildlife tour in South America is like no other.

Wildlife in South America is rich and varied to say the least, and a family holiday here is the perfect opportunity to expose your children to some of the most unusual species on earth, inspiring the next generation of eco-tourists. Watch their faces fill with delight as they spot their first Humpback Whale on a cruise from the seaside town of Salinas in Ecuador, take them to the King Penguin Park in Tierra del Fuego or, if you have older kids, go for something completely out of the ordinary and head to the Mato Grosso region of Brazil to discover the thousands of Caimans that inhabit the wetlands of Pantanal.

Of course, wildlife and the mystical Galapagos Islands go hand in hand and will thrill children of all ages. Snorkel with kaleidoscopic tropical fish in the peaceful bays, look for endemic species among the red sands of Rabida Island, or make friends with Marine Iguanas on North Seymour; it’s hard to leave your front door without being greeted by some form of animal life.

Alternatively, opt for the Amazon – the most famous rainforest in the world that plays host to positively thriving ecosystems, unlike anything, anywhere else on earth. Whether you are in Brazil, Peru, Ecuador or Colombia – to name a few – you can gain access to the jungle and uncover its natural treasures including colourful Macaws, captivating Howler Monkeys and maybe even elusive Jaguars. With family-friendly places to stay in the Amazon too, it promises to be a trip of a lifetime.

Fun Activities For Your South American Family Vacation

A continent with great geographic and cultural variety, South America promises visitors a wealth of experiences. One-eighth of the planet's landmass is here and ranges from silky beaches with skinny palm trees to towering peaks and glaciers and pretty much everything in between. Such breadth is a boon for travelers, allowing them a dizzying choice of options on their vacations.

There is so much to explore, with vibrant cities sitting close to areas of wild, natural beauty, and families will find no shortage of activities to keep them engaged and entertained. And whatever a traveler's taste, from enjoying the chance to wander landscapes that look as if they were plucked from outer space to poring over sublime urban vistas from an iconic viewpoint, they are all here. Parts of the continent even sit south of the Equator, meaning that summers in the United States are winters in those destinations; if the sound of skiing in July is music to your ears, read on.

Chill Out In The Atacama Desert

Close to Chile's borders with Bolivia and Argentina, the town of San Pedro de Atacama is the base for exploration of the spare terrain of the Atacama Desert. The town is small, with adobe houses and a low-key atmosphere, a place with hotels and restaurants that tourists use as a base to venture into the outdoors nearby. While the word desert might suggest an area of uniform desolation, this destination is a place of variegated scenery, some that feel like it belong on another planet.

This is a stunning part of the world, and for families that like to see something truly different, it's a piece of the planet that is definitely not run-of-the-mill. Working their way around the desert, adults and kids will encounter textures and colors likely to make their mouths open in awe. Expect to see deep blue lagoons, salt flats, geysers that produce fountains of steam, hot springs, an area called Valle de la Luna (or Valley of the Moon), and bodies of inland water that are so salty that visitors can effortlessly float in them.

Ride The Atlantic And Pacific Waves

Both sides of the continent have excellent surfing ; even off the water, families will find things to do to keep them busy. On the Pacific, a great spot for surfing is the Peruvian town of Mancorá, which is closer to the Ecuadorean city of Guayaquil than to the Peruvian capital of Lima. Thankfully, the water is warm, so wetsuits can often be foregone, and the waves aren't overpowering, making it a good spot for newbies. There are many surf schools in the town, with Inka Warrior Surf School among them.

Off the boards, visitors can enjoy the languid charms of the town, from hanging out at the beach to eating at the many relaxed restaurants, and while Mancorá town has a bit of a party reputation, there are quiet places to stay on the outskirts. On the Atlantic, Florianópolis is the center of surfing in Brazil. Technically, Floripa, as it's locally known, is the name of the large city on the west coast of Santa Caterina Island, but is regularly used to refer to the whole island. The island has fabulous beaches, quaint villages, an old fort, and an east coast lined with surf schools.

Scale The Peaks Of Patagonia

The mountains and lakes of Patagonia, which spread across southern Argentina and Chile, are magnificent. For any family that prizes dramatic, breathtaking outdoor scenery, few places in the world match up to the natural pageantry here. In Argentina, the Perito Moreno Glacier is part of Los Glaciares National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and it beautifully represents the archetypal image of a glacier — a deep wall of cool-blue ice with jagged tops that look almost razor-sharp.

Bariloche, also in Argentine Patagonia, has beautiful alpine lakes, snow-capped peaks, dense forests, and great hiking. In Chile, Torres del Paine National Park is a realm of brooding, menacing mountains, baby-blue lakes, fields of wildflowers, and clear, clean air that is invigorating. This is definitely a bucket-list destination, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, thanks to its rich variety of environments and the kind of place that photos can never do justice.

Snorkel The Sublime In Brazil's Fernando De Noronha

When describing the islands of the Fernando de Noronha National Park, UNESCO, which has designated them as part of a World Heritage site, presents them as an unfathomable magnificence. High praise indeed, but visitors will understand what the organization means upon seeing this archipelago of islands, a vestige of an old volcanic range of mountains. The 21 islands — one main one and 20 smaller siblings, with about 2,000 year-round inhabitants — mostly fall within the national park and sit hundreds of miles off the coast of mainland Brazil.

Visitors can expect towering, forested peaks, jagged coastlines, sweeping sandy bays, and ridiculously clear, inviting waters. Like the beaches, the marine life is stunning, with different sections of coral reefs and creatures such as rays, turtles, and Spinner dolphins frequently spotted in the waters here. Better yet, since the water is warm year-round, water-loving families won't need wetsuits to stay comfortable in the ocean.

Walk On The Moon In Bolivia

Located in the south of Bolivia, the otherworldly lunar landscapes of Salar de Uyuni (also known as the Uyuni Salt Flats) are probably as close as any of us will get to stepping on that big ball of cheese in the sky. The flats stretch across the high plains of Bolivia, thousands of feet above sea level, and according to official figures, there are billion tons of salt here.

Trips here usually extend across a few days for visitors that want to hit all the highlights of the salt pans, experiences such as the famed mirror effect, when a thin skin of water sits atop the salt, turning the plains into one large reflecting surface. The landscape is so enormous and flat that perspective takes on a whole new meaning, and families can use that to take fun photos. Kids might also enjoy the chance to stay in a hotel where the beds are made of salt.

Find A Lost World In The Highlands Of Peru

The high-altitude town of Cusco is a delight for families, though we recommend taking the first few days to acclimatize to the low-oxygen air. This is where to explore the Choco Museum , with a workshop letting visitors make their chocolate bar, from picking the bean to the finished product. The Cusco Cathedral, built over a former Incan temple, is beautiful inside and out, a place brimming with sublime, refined artwork and ornate workmanship. Wandering the hilly, cobblestone streets of the city is also a joy.

Cusco is also the springboard for travel to Machu Picchu, a marvel that is a window into an old civilization. Taking a train from Cusco to the site is a fun family outing, and once at Machu Picchu, an Incan city in the Andes that was only discovered about a century ago, adults and kids can explore the sprawling citadel. Be sure to look out for the roving llamas.

Wonder At Water Between Brazil And Argentina

The Niagara Falls are a striking sight, but the pair of cascades might seem a little ho-hum once you see the vast Iguazu Falls. Split between Argentina and Brazil, with the vast majority of the falls in the former, this horseshoe cascade is a spectacle in the true sense of the world. Rather than just appearing as one long sheet of water that drops over a precipice, Igauzu is a series of falls, with raging water surges dropping more than 250 feet.

There are platforms and walkways that allow travelers to get close to the drop, especially one section called the Devil's Throat, where the power of the water is immense. For more adventure, boat rides bring visitors close to the bottom of the falls, another fun family activity. The falls sit within a national park, a UNESCO World Heritage site with plenty of hiking trails and the chance to spot local flora and fauna, including toucans and flamingos.

Eat And Be Merry In Lima

Some of the most scintillating food on the continent is in Peru, and culinary observers can identify many reasons for the rich depth of the cuisine. Take a look at the nation on a map, and what becomes evident is the vast geographic range within its borders — on one side is the Pacific Ocean, while elsewhere, the country yields to the Amazon basin and the Andes mountains. This has helped to create microclimates all over Peru, environments that allow a huge range of products to grow (visit Surquillo Market in Lima, and you'll see what we mean).

Culturally, Peru has also welcomed large waves of immigrants from Asia, Europe, and Africa, all of which have influenced the culinary landscape, from the spices to the way seafood is prepared. For foodie families, an exciting, educational way to sate the stomach is a food tour of the capital and perhaps try some super-fresh ceviche. Lima Gourmet Company , for instance, offers five-hour tours that stop at city markets, Incan ruins, and street-food standouts.

Immerse Yourself In Nature In The Galápagos

A group of islands that profoundly influenced Charles Darwin when he put forward his theories on evolution, the Galápagos, in Ecuador, have flora and fauna not to be missed. For families, this is another bucket-list place — some of its species aren't found anywhere else. It is a destination that can be seen anytime, thanks to a location right by the Equator (this ensures the weather changes little throughout the year). The Galápagos tend to get busier in certain months — those coinciding with the summer vacations and end-of-year breaks in the United States and Europe.

Visitors access the islands either via a live-aboard boat, by booking lodging on one of the islands, or by taking day trips to other isles. Either way, families might see blue-footed boobies, penguins, nesting turtles, sea lions, large lizards, and plenty of avian life, while divers will be captivated by rays, sharks, and seals.

Hit The Slopes In Argentina And Chile

As noted earlier, the two countries that unfurl all the way to the bottom of South America — Argentina and Chile — have some wild mountainous terrain, allowing for incredible skiing in both. One of the most popular spots in Chile is Portillo , where a bright yellow hotel sits at the base of the valley. The ski area has more than 1,200 acres of terrain for skiers and snowboarders to explore, and even beginner families can look forward to slopes that are groomed every night.

Since the lodging here is limited to the hotel and some chalets and lodges, Portillo never gets ridiculously busy, and visitors are unlikely to encounter long lines at the lifts. The ski season includes July, August, and September, allowing U.S. skiers a chance to get a summer fix. Catedral Alta Patagonia , in Argentina's San Carlos de Bariloche, is a huge ski resort with 7,000 beds for tourists, 29 ski lifts, and super skiing during the American summer.

Ride The Rails Through The Jungles Of Colombia

For an adventure that is a little off-the-beaten-path and quite unique — which means it will give your family some real bragging rights — visitors should head to the San Cipriano Natural Reserve. An area of unspoiled, natural beauty in the forest and jungles near Cali, the reserve sits by the Danubio River. The water lets visitors enjoy the wilderness in a variety of ways, from tubing trips to dips in small pools.

However, the real appeal of a trip to this part of Colombia for any traveler, young or old, is the chance to ride a "brujita" (it roughly translates to "little witch"), a cobbled-together mode of transport that is both visionary and rudimentary. The set-up involves motorcycles rigged to run along train rails, pushing carriages at impressive speeds through the jungle. It's a thrilling adventure and not something you are likely to find anywhere else on the continent or perhaps even the world.

Cruise With Critters Along The Amazon

A visit to South America wouldn't be complete without some time on the Amazon, a river that extends for about 4,000 miles through the continent and that lends its name to a huge rainforest and basin. A waterway between the Andes of Peru and the Atlantic Ocean, it is known for its wealth of flora and fauna. While deforestation and commercial exploitation have negatively affected the Amazon rainforest, it remains a grand marvel of nature and is a treat to explore: many cruises ply its waters.

Vessels are small, enabling them to navigate the inland waters nimbly, and this size allows passengers to have an intimate experience in the basin — many trips actually wind along a tributary of the Amazon rather than the river itself. During a sailing, visitors might see dolphins capybara (imagine a giant hamster), go for a swim, and even interact with local villagers.

Climb To Rio De Janeiro's Iconic Statue

A number of places are totems of Brazil's carnival hub, among them beaches like Copacabana and Ipanema that the whole family will love. But are any sites more uniquely iconic than the Christ the Redeemer statue, a vision in white whose outstretched arms seem to welcome all? Located on top of Mount Corcovado, the large replica of Christ, figuratively and literally, looks over the city, a concrete-and-tile colossus almost 100 feet tall. It is a mouthwatering expression of religious art, a fun site to visit, and offers incredible city vistas.

Completed in 1931, the statue was only accessible by foot for many decades, though mechanized modes of transportation — escalators and elevators — debuted in 2002, making the ascent less strenuous. Today, the trip up to Cristo Redentor, as it is known in Portuguese, is made by train, by tourist bus or taxi, or on foot. From the viewing deck under the statue, shaped vaguely like a cross, the panoramas of urban Rio and its surrounding mountains are truly breathtaking, worthy of pictures to put in the family album.

Take A Seaside Stroll In Montevideo

In the Uruguayan capital of Montevideo, La Rambla skirts the waterfront for miles and is a great way to see different parts of the city. A leisurely stroll along this promenade will allow families to really get under the skin of the city to encounter different neighborhoods while easily getting in the day's steps. The walkway winds along the Río de la Plata and is populated with locals and visitors keen on enjoying the outdoors, for exercise, as a spot to do some fishing, or just for the simple pleasure of getting some air.

Along the way, travelers will encounter green spaces, beaches, boîtes to grab a bite, pieces of public art, ships, museums, busy shopping malls, and old city walls. La Rambla extends for about 13 miles and passes important public buildings such as the Palacio Salvo and the Hospital de Clínicas, both completed in the 1920s, making it a look into the past and a celebration of the present.

Shop Till You Drop In An Ecuadorian Market

A vast market in Ecuador, Otavalo is most rewarding for its plethora of indigenous items for sale. Technically known as Plaza de los Ponchos market, it's generally referred to as Otavalo, the town in the highlands northeast of Quito where the bazaar takes place. The market itself is huge, and while it is open every day of the year, Wednesday and Saturday tend to be when it is at its most fertile. For weaved goods — textiles, rugs, clothing, and so on — this market is a gold mine since weaving is a regional tradition that dates back centuries.

The colors of the fabrics are vibrantly spellbinding, and visitors will find goods that make fabulous gifts, from carvings to jewelry to clothes to accessories. Beyond the market, the area has much to captivate families, from the pretty San Pablo Lake, where travelers can take a kayaking or boat excursion, to a visit to the fascinating Otavalango Museum. This former factory is today a museum of all things indigenous and is run by indigenous staff.

Wander Among Treetops In The Forests Of Guyana

If one color could be used to describe the country of Guyana, it would be green. Almost 90% of the country, the only one in South America where the official language is English, is blanketed in forest. This is a rugged nation, not known for its sublime beaches but for its wild interiors, a land of mountains, valleys, plains, and trees everywhere. Visitors can get a good handle on the natural allure of Guyana during a canopy walk in the Iwokrama rainforest. An area in the heart of the country with a research center, the forest is also home to the Atta Rainforest Lodge, where the canopy walk is set up.

After winding through the forest on a marked trail, visitors will come to suspension footbridges about 100 feet above the forest floor. Walking along them and stopping at viewing decks, guests can take in the sights and sounds of a tropical rainforest, forging unforgettable memories for the whole family. Back at the lodge, they might spot some of the many hummingbird species or tapirs that wander around the landscaped grounds.

Tackle The Rapids Of Chile's Futaleufú River

This activity is aimed at families with children aged 16 or over, an excursion that will surely get participants' hearts pumping while promising liberal splashes of mountain water to help cool things down. Here in Chile's Patagonia region, where the riverine adventure takes place, the rafting season runs during the summer months of December through March. The Futaleufú River is known among the whitewater rafting cognoscenti for its dependable rapids and powerful churns, and families looking for a thrilling escapade won't be disappointed.

Trips last a day or more and pass via rapids with foreboding names such as Terminator, Himalayas, and Toro, some designated Class V (the most powerful). During the brief interludes between the roiling waters, paddlers can admire the scenery around them, from Andean forests to pretty waterfalls, and, if they are lucky, they might spy the great condor soaring overhead.

Travelling outside Canada adds up fast. From the cost of plane tickets to rising fees , international travel can get expensive. However, where you go can certainly affect your budget.

According to a guide by Flytrippers , a Quebec-based flight deal website, travelling can be affordable depending on the destination.

"The cheapest countries to travel to are also wonderful destinations, allowing you to travel for less, for longer, or in luxury," states co-founder Andrew D'Amours. "It's so sad that so many people think that travel is necessarily expensive because it's just not true."

The company compiled a list of 34 affordable countries to travel to where you can make the most of your vacation for just $40 a day.

D'Amours said that in Brazil, he scored Taylor Swift tickets for just $31, while in Toronto, the cheapest tickets were $200 for nosebleed seats .

And these countries have much to offer too, from cities rich in culture to beaches and nature.
