Everyone browses the web differently. And whether you’re working, researching, or just bumming around the internet, you want control over the links you open.

In Safari , you have various ways to open links on your iPhone, iPad, and Mac. One of the easiest ways to open a link is in a new tab. This lets you keep your current page open but still have a look at the link you click or tap.

Here, we’ll show you a few ways to open a link in a new tab in Safari. From opening it in the background or moving right to it, to shortcuts and settings, you decide how to open your links .

How to open new tabs in Safari

On iphone and ipad.

At times, when you tap a link from a webpage in Safari on iOS, it’ll open in a new tab. But many websites don’t want you to navigate away. So if you visit a site and tap to read an article, for example, it’ll open in the same tab. Here’s how to change this.

Instead of tapping a link on a webpage, press and hold the link . This will display the shortcut menu. From there, tap Open in New Tab .

When you do this, the link opens in a new tab and you switch to that new tab automatically . But you can change this too. You can still open the link in a new tab but do so in the background.

1) Open iPhone Settings and select Safari .

2) Under Tabs, pick Open Links .

3) Choose In Background .

Now, when you press and hold a link to display the shortcut menu, tap Open in Background . This will open the link in a new tab but won’t switch you over to it immediately . This way, you can continue viewing the site you’re on and pop over to that tab when you’re ready.

You have different options in Safari on Mac than you do on iOS. You can control links by opening them in new tabs instead of new windows automatically and use a shortcut to immediately open links in new tabs.

Open Safari and click Safari > Preferences from the menu bar. Select Tabs at the top. Then configure these options.

Open pages in tabs instead of windows : Select either Automatically or Always from the drop-down. The difference between these is that Automatically will open the link in a new tab unless that link is designed for a specific format. Always will open it in a new tab regardless.

Command-click opens a link in a new tab : If you check this box, you can hold your Command key, click the link, and the page will open in a new tab.

When a new tab or window opens make it active : Check this box only if you want to immediately switch to the new tab when it opens. If you prefer to leave it open in the background, don’t check the box.

Along with the above adjustments, you can always open a link in a new tab with a right-click. Right-click the link and select Open Link in New Tab .

This is how you can take control of the links you open in Safari. Open them in new tabs, switch right to them or open them in the background and use shortcuts. It’s all in your hands!

How to open a new tab in Safari on iPhone and iPad

• Open Safari
• On an iPhone, tap the show pages icon in the bottom right of the screen (it looks like two squares). A quick swipe up from the Bottom Tab Bar on iOS 15 and newer gets you there even quicker.
• Tap the + button.

Alternatively, tap and hold the show pages icon, then tap New Tab . For those who like gestures, a quick swipe to the left on the Bottom Tab Bar opens a new tab while a swipe to the right goes back to your previous one. 

You can also open links you come across in a new tab by doing the following:

• Tap and hold (long press) the link you want to open in a new tab.
• Tap Open in New Tab (or Open in Background on iPad).

If you're on an iPad, you can open a link in a new window with Split Screen in Safari . Instead of tapping Open in Background, hit Open in Split Screen to have both tabs side by side -- great for when you're working on an essay for example.

How to switch tabs in Safari on iPhone and iPad

• On an iPhone, tap the show pages icon in the bottom right of the screen (it looks like two squares). On iPad, this looks like four squares and appears in the top right of the screen.
• Tap the tab you want to view.

You'll also benefit from Mac-like tab dividers beneath the URL field on the iPad's larger display. You can tap these to switch between tabs too.

How to close a tab in Safari on iPhone and iPad

• Tap the X in the top right of a tab to close it. (You can also swipe the card to the left to throw it away).

While the above steps work on an iPad, it is easier to tap the X next to your tab in the toolbar to close it and save yourself an extra tap.

• Tap Private or New Private Tab .

To exit private browsing mode, press and hold the show pages icon and tap (number) Tabs to return to your previously open regular tabs.

You can also start and stop a private browsing section from the sidebar menu on the iPad.

The usual route users take in order to initiate a new tab in Safari is by tapping and holding on a link for a second until a pop-up window shows itself. Just tap on 'Open in New Tab' and you're good to go, right? Well, of course. Provided you don't mind doing it a several hundred times throughout the day.

On the iPad, there's a far more quicker method, thanks to a gesture which many of you are most likely aren't aware of. Here's how it works: first find the link you wish to open in a new tab. Now just  tap on the link using two fingers instead of one. The link will open up in a new tab in the background. You can do this for as many links as you like, obviously. Also, this method works on all iPads as long as you are running iOS 12.

This 'gesture' might seem a little bit hard to get used to at first, but eventually you will. In fact, you'll get so good at it that you'll never miss a link while tapping it with two fingers.

Tiny little shortcuts such as these really elevate the overall browsing experience on a device like the iPad. And it makes sense too on a larger display, allowing users to take advantage of natural gestures in order to get work done.

Three steps to distraction-free reading

So, you're reading a fascinating article in Safari when you come across a link to something else that looks interesting. You don't want to stop reading, but you're afraid you'll forget about the new article, so you open it in another tab for safe keeping. Annoyingly, though, Safari kicks your current article to the curb and immediately takes you to the new one. Argh! If Safari was a person, you could punch it in the face — but since it isn't, here's what else you can do: make new tabs open in the background.

To do this, you first need to change a setting:

• Open the Settings app.
• On an iPhone, navigate to Safari > Open Links. On an iPad, go to Safari > Open New Tabs in Background.
• On an iPhone, select the "In Background" option. On an iPad, toggle on "Open New Tabs in Background."

Now you can open links in the background tab by performing these steps in Safari:

• Tap and hold on any link.
• On an iPhone, select "Open in Background." On an iPad, choose "Open in New Tab."
• On an iPhone, you can find the new link by tapping the Show All Tabs button in the lower-right corner. On an iPad, the link opens in a new tab beside your current one.

How to Open Multiple Safari Windows on iPad

You may already know that you can use Safari, and many other apps, in Split Screen (Apple calls it Split View) on iPad. As an iPad Safari user, you also surely know about opening new tabs in the same Safari window. However, if you are like me, you may like to have many things open at once, but hate the clutter. Fortunately, for Safari on iPad, you can actually just open up a completely new Safari window – no need to use split screen or anything like that.

In this article, we will explain how to open another Safari window on iPad, and then we’ll also throw in some information on the other window/tab options available for Safari on iPad – such as Split View, opening new tabs, and viewing all open tabs and windows.

Opening the New Safari Window

Other tab and window options, how to open an additional safari window on ipad.

First, let’s take a look at the menu that pops up when you press (tap and hold briefly) the Safari icon. If you don’t have any Safari windows open currently, you see the following:

So, from here you can see that you can open or show:

• New Tab – Tapping on this will just open a Safari window.
• New Private Tab – Tapping on this will open a Private window.
• Show Bookmarks – Pretty much just opens a Safari window.
• Show Reading List – Also, just opens a Safari window.

The other menu options are the standard Edit Home Screen and Remove App that you will find when you press on any iPad app icon. Now, except for New Private Tab, most of these are not particularly interesting or useful if you don’t already have a Safari window open – you could just tap on the icon to open a new window. Let’s see what happens when we have previously opened a Safari window, and we press on the Safari icon:

So, the main difference you can see is that there is a new option, Show All Windows. However, now that you have a Safari window open, some of the options have a different effect, so we’ll go through all of them:

• New Tab – Tapping on this will open a new tab in your previously opened Safari window.
• New Private Tab – Tapping on this will open a Private window – unless you had previously opened a private window, in which case this just opens a new tab in that window.
• Show Bookmarks – Opens your Bookmarks on the left side of your Safari window.
• Show Reading List – Opens your Reading List on the left side of your Safari window.
• Show All Windows – This is the one that will allow you to open a new Safari window; I don’t know why there isn’t an option called “Open New Window” – but there isn’t.

Now, from start to finish, here’s how to open a new Safari window when you already have one open.

• Assuming you have previously opened a Safari window. If necessary, swipe that Safari window out of your way so that you can see your Safari app icon. Press on the icon.
• In the menu that appears, tap on Show All Windows.
• Swipe up to close a window.
• Tap on a window to open it.
• Tap on Reopen Closed Window to open up the last Safari window you closed.
• Open a new window – tap on the little plus sign inside a circle that you see in the upper-right corner of your screen.

Split View and Other Multi-Window iPad Tricks

If you press (not just tap) this button, you will see more tab options, and an option to open a new window in Split View. You can also merge all of your open windows – all pages will become tabs in a single Safari window.

Handoff is Apple's feature for seamlessly moving a task from one Apple device to another. It works for many apps, including Safari.

First, ensure that Handoff is enabled on your devices. From there, launch the Safari browser and then open the website on the primary device. This can be your iPhone, iPad, or Mac. Ensure that your device doesn't go to sleep or else the feature won't be able to hand the tab over to the secondary Apple device.

Now, let's move over to the device where you want to open the Safari tab.

Handoff Tabs to iPhone

If you have a newer iPhone with the Home bar, swipe up from the bottom of the screen and hold for a second for the App Switcher to appear. If you're using an older iPhone, double-press on the Home button.

At the bottom of the screen, you'll see a "Safari" bar with the device name where the tab is open. Tap on it to instantly open the web page in Safari on your iPhone.

Handoff Tabs to iPad and Mac

When it comes to the Mac and the iPad, the handoff process works using the Dock. On your Mac, you'll see a new Safari icon appear in a separate section at the beginning of the Dock. When you hover over it, it will show you the device where the Safari tab is open.

Click on the icon to instantly open the tab in Safari on your Mac.

On your Mac, this feature is browser-agnostic. Even if you've set your default browser to Chrome or Firefox, this feature will still work.

For your iPad, you'll find the "Safari" icon at the right edge of the Dock , with a little badge at the top-right corner of the icon showing the source device. Tap on it to open the web page in Safari.

The Handoff feature is great if you have multiple Apple devices handy. But what if you want to open a website that you were looking at a couple of days ago on one of your devices without having to pick it up.

This is where the iCloud Tabs feature comes in. As long as all your devices are using the same Apple ID and you've enabled iCloud sync for Safari, you can use the iCloud Tabs feature.

iCloud Tabs let you pick up your browsing history where you left off. The feature resides inside the Safari tab switcher.

On your iPhone or iPad, open the "Safari" app and tap on the Tabs button from the toolbar.

Here, you'll first see a list of all open tabs. Swipe to the bottom of the screen, and you'll now see different sections for all of the devices connected to your Apple ID, with the respective tabs that are currently open on that device. Browse around and tap on a page to open it.

On your Mac, click on the Tabs button in the top-right corner.

Here, scroll to the bottom of the screen to find all your devices. Click on a web page to quickly open it.

If you want to open the web page in a new tab, hold the "Command" key when you click on the web page link.

The Handoff feature isn't always reliable; sometimes it just doesn't show up. This is where you can use the AirDrop feature (which was much improved in iOS 13, iPadOS 13, and macOS Catalina).

On your iPhone or iPad, tap on the Share button while viewing a website in Safari.

Next, select the device you want to send it to.

On your Mac, click on the Share button from the Safari toolbar. Here, select the "AirDrop" option.

Now, select a device from the AirDrop menu. Once the web page is sent, click on the "Done" button to go back.

Internet browsing can get a bit sticky when you have a lot of research to do. You can end up with a jumble of browser windows, or you may leave one webpage only to wish you could find it again.

When you're browsing with Safari on a Mac and you want to open multiple webpages at once or open a page now for later viewing, your best bet is to open those pages in their own tabs. There are several ways to do it.

Open a Page in a New Tab Once

There are several ways to open a webpage in a new tab on a Mac.

• Command-click a link on a webpage
• Command-click on a Favorites icon or a Top Sites thumbnail, both of which can be reached through the Bookmark tab in the menu bar
• Command-click the Back or Forward button in Safari to open the previous or next page in a new tab.
• After typing in the Smart Search field, Command-click a search suggestion to open it in a new tab.
• From the Bookmarks sidebar, Control-click a bookmark and choose "Open in New Tab" from the shortcut menu. You can also Control-click a Bookmarks folder and choose "Open in New Tabs."

If Command-clicking isn't working, go to the Safari menu and select Preferences. In the Tabs section, select "Command key-click opens a link in a new tab."

Always Open Pages in New Tabs

To open all links in new tabs all the time, open a terminal window and type the following command line: "defaults write com.apple.Safari TargetedClicksCreateTabs -bool true" without the quotation marks. To reverse this, open a terminal window and type: "defaults write com.apple.Safari TargetedClicksCreateTabs -bool false" without quotes.

To open a terminal window on a Mac, first open the Applications folder, then the Utilities folder and then the Terminal application, or enter "Terminal" in the search field of the Launchpad.

Other Tab Tricks For Your Mac

• To show all tabs in a window, click View in the menu bar and choose Show All Tabs.
• To convert all Safari windows to tabs in one window: Choose Window  and  Merge All Windows .

Open Links in New Tabs in iOS

The iPhone and iPad work differently from the Mac. To open an interesting link in a new tab in the background of your current tab, you need to make a change in the iOS Settings app.

• For iPhones, open the Settings app. Tap Safari. Tap Open Links and select Open New Tabs in Background. 
• On an iPad, open the Settings app, tap Safari and tap the slider next to Open New Tabs in Background to activate the setting.

After you make the settings change, you can open a link in a background tab on iPhones and iPads:

• Tap and hold on a link.
• Select Open in New Tab  to place a tab entry on the tab bar of an iPad or to generate a background tab on an iPhone. JOh the iPad, just click the tab to view it. On an iPhone, to view the background tab, click the Show all Tabs icon in the lower right corner of the screen and select it.

As the default web browser on Mac, Safari has received a steady stream of updates over the last few years. Apple releases new builds for all its apps and services with yearly OS updates. While we applaud Safari improvements on Mac, the burning question remains the same: is it good enough to prevent users from switching to Chrome? How does it compare to everyone’s favorite web browser out there? Read our comparison post before you change the default browser on your Mac , iPhone, or iPad.

Google Chrome vs Microsoft Edge: Which browser is better?

Cross-platform availability.

Before we pit Safari against Chrome, let’s check their cross-platform availability first. After all, you won’t want to leave your web bookmarks, history, quick links, and other preferences behind when you switch to another platform.

As expected, alternating is a breeze with Chrome, since the browser is available on most smart platforms you can think of. Whether you use Mac, Windows, iPhone, Android, or ChromeOS, you are ready to surf the web with all of your personal data and a familiar interface. In contrast, Apple’s walled garden approach has limited Safari’s availability to the company’s devices only.

User interface and theme

Being the first-party app on macOS, Apple has nailed the esthetics of Safari. Let’s start with the homepage. It carries all the essential elements you need when you fire up the browser. You can check your favorites, recently closed tabs, reading list, privacy report, Siri suggestions, and even apply minimal wallpaper to the background. If it’s too busy for you, customize the entire homepage from the bottom menu. Overall, it’s not as busy as Microsoft Edge and doesn’t look as bland as Chrome’s homepage. Safari also offers a cool translucent effect at the top when you scroll through webpages. Unlike Chrome, there is no theme store to change the look and feel with a single click.

Google Chrome recently received a neat Material You makeover on the web. While Material You on Chrome matches the rest of Google services, it does look slightly out of place with other Mac apps.

Tab management

Do you often have dozens of tabs open during long research sessions? Managing and switching between them can be cumbersome after a while. Here’s where Chrome and Safari’s tab groups come into play, where you can organize relevant tabs under different groups. Safari does have a couple of additional tricks up its sleeve though.

When you create several tab groups on Safari, you can check the entire list from the vertical sidebar. Safari also lets you create different profiles to keep your browsing data separate, such as tabs, history, cookies and website data.

You can assign a different symbol, color, and separate extension list for Work, School, or Personal profiles. There is also an option to share a tab group with your iMessage contacts.

Chrome vs. Safari: Features

Let’s compare Safari and Chrome based on extension support, reading mode, and other novelty features.

Reading mode

Apple offers a seamless reading mode on Safari that you can customize with different backgrounds, fonts, and sizes. In comparison, Chrome’s reader mode leaves a lot to be desired. It opens the article in a sidebar and doesn’t necessarily hide all the distracting elements. Safari wins hands down here.

While Safari covers the essential extensions from top VPNs, password managers, and other third-party developers like Grammarly, Pocket, Raindrop, and Notion, the overall collection is still slim compared to Google Chrome.

If your workflow depends on dozens of extensions, think twice before switching from Chrome to Safari.

Seamless sharing

Shared with You is a niche Safari feature that is tightly backed in iMessage. Links shared with you in the Messages app automatically appear in the Share with You section in Safari. It is only useful for those who frequently exchange weblinks in iMessage conversations.

Instant conversion and translation

Both Safari and Chrome support instant currency conversion and basic math equations. For example, you can quickly get a final number when you type $1000 to INR or 45*3 in the address bar. Chrome goes a step further with Google Translate integration - you can simply type Hello in French and get results instantly.

Chrome vs. Safari: Password management

Both browsers offer basic password management to save your login credentials. Safari uses iCloud Passwords that can sync with all your devices. It supports autofill, Passkeys, verification codes, notes, and more.

Google Password Manager also supports notes and checkup. Like security recommendations on Safari, Chrome Password Manager’s checkup tool shows your leaked, reused, and weak passwords.

Privacy and security

The built-in standard protection on Chrome warns you of harmful files, extensions, and corrupt sites. Safari is a step ahead with iCloud Private Relay. It’s a privacy add-on for Apple One and iCloud+ subscribers to hide your IP address from websites you visit. The option is enabled by default and works silently in the background. When you visit a website in Safari, no one, including Apple, can see who you are or which sites you are visiting. It’s not as extreme as a VPN connection and doesn’t break your browsing setup. Safari also offers a privacy report that shows the number of trackers it has blocked from profiling you in the last 30 days.

Performance

When it comes to performance, you won’t find any major differences between Chrome and Safari on a high-speed internet connection. However, if your Mac has a slow network connection, you may notice that Safari can load webpages faster than Chrome, something that Avast confirmed in their dedicated speed comparison for major browsers.

While we are on the topic of performance, we should also factor in compatibility. Since Google Chrome (built on Chromium) is the most popular web browser out there, developers test and optimize their offerings for it. You may run into performance issues with specific websites (like Photopea, a web-based Photoshop alternative) on Safari.

Memory usage

Safari is a relatively lightweight web browser compared to Chrome. This is expected, since Chrome has been infamous for high RAM usage. We opened a couple of identical tabs on Chrome and Safari and checked their memory usage from the Activity Monitor. We will let the screenshot below do the talking.

Mac users with 8GB of RAM will surely appreciate Safari’s approach to memory usage.

Chrome vs. Safari: Mobile experience

Both Apple and Google have done a solid job with their iOS apps. They use a bottom bar with all the essential options. You can also use Chrome password manager as the default method to autofill login info. Chrome’s default Discover menu with news articles may irritate some users. Interestingly, Google has done a better job than Apple when it comes to widgets, as Chrome offers more widget options than Safari. Most notably, Chrome offers lock screen widgets which are missing from Safari.

Browse the web in style

Are you still unsure about the pros and cons of Chrome and Safari? Allow us to simplify the situation. Safari shines with better UI, low memory usage, and integration with other Apple apps. View, manage, and install add-ins for Excel, PowerPoint, and Word

When you install and use an add-in, it adds custom commands and extends the features of your Microsoft 365 programs to help increase your productivity.

View installed add-ins

You can directly install add-ins from this page or select  More Add-ins  to explore.

In the Office Add-ins dialog, select the  My Add-ins  tab.

Select an add-in you want to view the details for and right-click to select  Add-in details  option.

Install an add-in

Tip:  If you selected  Home  >  Add-ins , directly install popular add-ins from the menu that appears, or select  More Add-ins to view more options. 

Select  Add  from the add-in you want to install.

Manage installed add-ins

To manage and view information about your installed add-ins, perform the following:

Select  File > Get Add-ins .   Alternatively, select  Home  >  Add-ins > More add-ins .

In the Office Add-ins dialog, select the  My Add-ins tab.

Select  Manage My Add-ins . This opens the Office Store page in your preferred browser with a list of your installed add-ins.

Remove an add-in

To remove an add-in you installed, follow these steps.

Select  File  > Get Add-ins . Alternatively, select  Home > Add-ins .

In the Office Add-ins dialog, select  My Add-ins  tab.

Select an add-in you want to remove and right click to select  Remove  option.

Note:  Add-ins that appear in the  Admin Managed  section of the Office Add-ins dialog can only be removed by your organization's administrator.

Cancel an add-in subscription

To discontinue your subscription to an add-in, do the following:

Open the Microsoft 365 application and select the Home  tab.

Select  Add-ins from the ribbon,   then select  More Add-ins .

Select the My Add-ins tab   to view your existing add-ins.

Select  Manage My Add-ins .

Under the Payment and Billing section, choose Cancel Subscription .

Select  OK ,   then Continue .

Once you've cancelled your subscription, you should see a message that says "You have cancelled your app subscription" in the comments field of your add-in list.

Manage an add-in's access to your devices

Note:  The information in this section only applies to Excel on the web, Outlook on the web, PowerPoint on the web, and Word on the web running in Chromium-based browsers, such as Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome.

When an installed add-in requires access to your devices, such as your camera or microphone, you will be shown a dialog with the option to allow, allow once, or deny permission.

If you select  Allow , the add-in will have access to the requested devices. The permission you grant persists until you uninstall the add-in or until you clear the cache of the browser where the add-in is running.

If you select  Allow Once , the add-in will have access to the requested devices until it's relaunched in the browser.

If you select  Deny , the add-in won't be able to access the requested devices. This persists until you uninstall the add-in or until you clear the cache of the browser where the add-in is running.

If you want to change an add-in's access to your devices after selecting  Allow  or  Deny , you must first uninstall the add-in or clear your browser cache.

Force Safari to always open new links in a new tab

I found an older post here that addressed this issue, however, the solution provided does not work in the latest version of macOS (macOS Sonoma (2023)).

I would like EVERY link I click to always open in a new tab (or at least in a new window if it's coded to do that). Safari seems to open every link in the same window I'm already in. I have to page back to see all my search results and loose the current window. I know you can command click, but I don't always remember to, it is very frustrating. Why can't there be a simple Safari toggle setting that allows me to turn this feature on and off at will?

Hello Joel4JC, to my understanding there is a bug currently with Safari 17.1 (see BUG Safari 17.1: Open new window instead … - Apple Community ).

The solution you post is not working in that case (try it on that page, I am interested): https://www.rapidtables.com/web/html/link/html-link-new-window.html

Click on Safari in menu bar

Click on Preferences

Click on Tabs

Uncheck "⌘-click opens a link in new tab"

Check "When a new tab or window opens, make it active"

Has this been resolved? I have the same issue/annoyance. When I'm researching and have a page with reference links, I want new tabs to open and not have to hit the "back" arrow to return to my research.

iOS 18 May Feature All-New 'Safari Browsing Assistant'

iOS 18 will apparently feature a new Safari browsing assistant, according to backend code on Apple's servers discovered by Nicolás Álvarez . MacRumors contributor Aaron Perris confirmed that the code exists, but not many details are known at this time.

Update: Álvarez has since said that iCloud Private Relay might not be related to this feature.

A browsing assistant in Safari could be one of the many new generative AI features that are rumored to be coming to the iPhone with iOS 18 later this year. There are already multiple iPhone web browsers with AI tools, such as Microsoft Edge with a GPT-4-powered Copilot and Arc Search , which can summarize web pages to provide concise information.

Álvarez also uncovered a so-called "Encrypted Visual Search" feature in the backend code on Apple's servers, but no specific details are known. MacRumors contributor Steve Moser last year discovered a new Visual Search feature for Apple's Vision Pro headset in visionOS beta code, which would allow users to copy and paste printed text from the real world into apps and more, but the feature has yet to launch. It is possible that Apple is planning to debut a more secure version of the feature. However, the code could also relate to the iPhone's existing Visual Look Up feature that can identify objects in photos and videos.

Apple is set to unveil iOS 18 during its WWDC keynote on June 10 , so we should learn more about these potential new features in a few more months.
