Read on for helpful tips for shopping in Cozumel cruise port, including what to buy and where to find the perfect memento of your trip.

Shopping In Cozumel Cruise Port

Two large open-air shopping malls are located directly adjacent to the three cruise ship ports on the island of Cozumel. These will naturally be great choices for shopping in Cozumel cruise port , and you will surely find most items that tourists would seek.

However, there are also various shopping destinations close to the ports that will also give you a more authentic experience, and the opportunity to explore the island and everything it offers.

Best Items To Buy In Cozumel

Cozumel is one of the best shopping destinations in the Caribbean, and there are numerous items for which the area is renowned when it comes to shopping. Whether you are shopping for yourself, friends, or family, there is no shortage of wonderful souvenirs and gifts.

You will find branded souvenirs, locally handcrafted items, and everything in between.

Some of the most popular items to purchase in Cozumel are hammocks, blankets, throws, ceramics, vanilla, tequila, leather goods, jewelry , and chocolate. It’s important to shop around when purchasing any of the above items. Only shopping in popular tourist areas may result in higher prices and a somewhat less authentic experience.

On the other hand, there is naturally a higher degree of regulation in tourist-oriented areas that will ensure you are purchasing genuine products.

Where To Shop In Cozumel?

You may want to remain close to the cruise port for lack of time, or concerns over getting lost. In that case, you will not be short of shopping options at either of the two open-air malls located at the cruise ship ports. Here you will find an endless array of popular brands, local merchandise, and various restaurants and bars.

Punta Langosta is located directly across from the main cruise ship dock, as is the Royal Village Shopping center.

For the more adventurous traveler, head towards San Miguel to find an exciting assortment of authentic stores. There are various markets, such as the Plaza Confetti.

Avenida Rafael Melgar is a lengthy coastal avenue with countless shops and restaurants. The Plaza Del Sol is a vibrant town square offering an authentic experience. The Quinta Avenida is located just off the town square with its incredible collection of stores.

While in downtown San Miguel, visit Pama, a large duty-free store where you can find many items at great prices.

Best Places For Souvenirs In Cozumel

If your shopping in Cozumel cruise port will focus on commercially branded souvenirs, you should find everything you are looking for in either of the open-air shopping malls adjacent to the cruise ship ports. Here you will find many well-known brands such as Señor Frog’s , Pirana Joe, Diamonds International, and Margaritaville .

If you are searching for a larger variety of authentic, locally made souvenirs at good prices, you will need to venture out of the cruise ship ports and into other areas. For example, the Mercado Municipal is a fantastic local shopping area situated about 10 minutes away from downtown San Miguel. (Catch a taxi at the end of the pier.) It’s a local market frequented by regular folks. You can find authentic Mexican food, as well as small stalls selling clothing items and housewares.

Los Cincos Soles is another store situated on Rafael Melgar Avenue, where you will find an array of local souvenirs and anything that is locally made.

The Gallery Azul is another popular location where you will find an incredible collection of handmade, unique art pieces. Whether you’re looking for artwork, hand-blown glass, vases, sculptures, or home décor, you will surely find something unique and beautiful at the Gallery Azul in downtown San Miguel.

Tips For Bargaining/Haggling In Cozumel

When shopping around in a market in Cozumel, you may notice a trend amongst other shoppers to bargain with stall owners. This is part and parcel of the shopping experience in Cozumel, especially in the markets.

Stall owners expect a certain degree of bargaining from shoppers regarding their prices. Most stall owners will intentionally name a higher price while expecting that the shopper will try to bargain them down.

If bargaining is done politely and within reason, most stall owners will be happy to oblige to let you purchase their products for a fair price.

Cozumel Shopping Tips & Dos/Don’ts

It’s important to note that many goods available from local shops in Cozumel might be subject to certain restrictions once you attempt to enter your next destination. With this in mind, it will be best to avoid any restricted goods to ensure that you don’t get into trouble at any point during your holiday.

For example, many pharmaceuticals traditionally requiring a prescription in the US will be available in Cozumel over the counter. This is common at small pharmacies and larger outlets. While you may purchase a certain amount of these pharmaceuticals legally to take home, there are restrictions as to the amounts.

Items, such as sea life, are sold at many locations throughout Cozumel, especially coral. While some coral items are permitted, certain types of coral and other sea life, such as starfish, may not be brought back. Black coral, in particular, is an endangered species that will be confiscated, and you should avoid purchasing this altogether.

Closing Thoughts

Cozumel provides a unique and vibrant shopping experience for visitors. Whether you’re looking for a t-shirt, Christmas ornament, or handcrafted local wares, shopping in Cozumel cruise port and markets will make for a rewarding excursion.

Top things to do in Cozumel port

There are good reasons why Cozumel is such a popular cruise port. To start with, the tropical weather is just fabulous and very reliable with 80°F (27° C) average annual temperature. But its main attraction is the unmatched clarity of the ocean waters that surround the island.

Photo of Diving Site in Cozumel

Diving Site - Cozumel

Since Jean-Jacques Cousteau 'discovered' Cozumel's spectacular scuba sites, when he first landed here in 1961, all sorts of water-sports and scuba , in particular, are offered by a plethora of local small business. For those that are not attracted by the wonders of ocean depths, snorkeling, fishing or just sea splashing in stunning beaches are minutes away from the cruise port. Naturally, most of these beaches have bars, restaurants, and activities that range from the most simple paddle boards to para-sailing or jet skiing.

Tulum , a major Mayan historical site, is inland but close enough to explore when cruising (1.5-hour on a ship excursion or 2 hours on your own) and a must see for those interested in archeology. Tulum is around 30-minute drive from Playa del Carmen and you will need to get on a ferry to this beautiful town inland (another 45 minutes) - count with at least 6 hours if you wish to do it on your own.

In the island itself, a half-hour from the pier, San Gervasio is a much smaller Mayan ruin site where Ix Chel , the goddess of the moon, childbirth, and fertility was worshiped in pre-Columbian times.

Very few cruise lines offer tours to Chichén Itzá - one of the most spectacular Mayan archaeological sites - for the simple reason that a tour from Cozumel and back will take at least 10 hours. If Chichén Itzá is on your bucket list, make sure you look for a cruise line that offers this tour.

Travel around on your own

Renting a scooter, an ATV or a Jeep is easy, a great way to travel around and discover the island on your own, in particular, if the cruise travel wishes to combine sites that are not offered by tour operators or the cruise ship shorex. Just be aware that roads on the east side of the island may be a bit rough and riding a scooter requires extra attention.

Snorkel and scuba diving

All cruise lines offer scuba diving and snorkel as part of their shore excursions. But a dive can be also organized with many of the small PADI certified diving clubs close to any of the cruise piers. It is advisable to book online in advance.

If your cruise ship docks in Punta Langosta, the town of San Miguel is right across the street from the pier. When docking at the International Pier aka TMM or Puerta Maya, the cruise traveler will have to get a taxi to San Miguel ($8 per person each way up to 4 passengers). In town, there are a few interesting landmarks. The main promenade along the ocean is known as Av. Rafael E. Melgar and is lined with shops all the way to the Forum shopping mall (over 1 mile from Punta Langosta).

San Miguel Main Square - Cozumel

Half away along this promenade, the Benito Juarez Park is a large square with a few nice restaurants, a mall with souvenirs and crafts (Plaza del Sol), the Synagogue and close by the small church of San Miguel. The Cozumel Island Museum ($4 per person and children under 8 enter free) is just a couple of blocks north of the square. Besides the exhibits, the museum's restaurant is nice and has a great view.

Shops and best shopping

Photo of Shops in Cozumel

San Miguel Shopping - Cozumel

As Cozumel became a popular cruise destination, many other attractions (besides its natural beauty) have developed. The number and quality of shops expanded like in many other islands in the Caribbean and San Miguel is now a shopping paradise . Every single duty-free shop you will find in the Caribbean has at least one store in San Miguel (Diamonds International, Del Sol, Cariloha and so on) but the cruise traveler will also find many others like Pana or Cinco Soles that only exist in Cozumel. If you are a cigar aficionado, Cozumel has some of the best and most affordable cigars in the Caribbean .

Local cuisine, quick bites and restaurants

Flavors: Whatever your plans for a day in Cozumel, do not miss the opportunity to taste real Mexican cuisine or even from other culinary traditions. A good number of restaurants offer different international cuisines for all types of budgets, including Italian and even kosher. Guacamole, tacos, fajitas can be found pretty much all over town and some of the settings are just as delicious as the food.

La Mission is one the Editor's favorites when in the mood for a Mexican treat with a popular flair. The rooms are vast, the service is slow, the music can be a bit too loud but the cuisine is genuine and the ambiance unbeatable.

Panchos Backyard is a more upscale type of restaurant - it also has another venue at Puerta Maya's Pier/Terminal. The cuisine is fabulous and the service tends to be good if the restaurant is not to full. More expensive than many other restaurants in Cozumel, it is worth every cent. Panchos Backyard Website

For the savvy cruiser that has visited Cozumel before and explored the main attractions, Playa del Carmen is a great alternative and easy to get to on a ferry (departures every hour, costing around US $10 each way). The ferry terminal is at walking distance from the Punta Langosta Terminal and a short taxi ride from the other 2 terminals (around $8 each way). Ferries run every hour and the crossing takes around 45 minutes. The Ferry Terminal is right by the Main Square in San Miguel. The terminal in Playa del Carmen is very centrally located and within walking to all main attractions. Check here for Ferry Schedules.

Crowded Duty Free Port Shopping Mall... - Puerta Maya

  • Mexico
  • Yucatan Peninsula
  • Quintana Roo
  • Cozumel
  • Cozumel - Things to Do
  • Puerta Maya

Crowded Duty Free Port Shopping Mall for cruisers.

Lots of hawkers outside their duty free shops pushing over priced jewelry, trinkets & other items for cruisers. watch what your purchase! Can't return like Walmart! look for one shop that displayed "USA" prices $1 up ...cheaper than others, Example: sundress $10 compare to similar $20 up at other port shopping. Looking around, only cruiser shoppers present. Lots of trinkets and take home treasures of your trip. shops small but packed with selections. not much walking room. All ages wadding pool & beach chairs. crowded area when 3 ships docked same time

We have cruised into Cozumel numerous times. Puerta Maya is one of our favorites! There is a variety of shops and restaurants here including Los Cinco Soles. You can purchase handcrafted items from Mexico, perfume, clothing, or jewelry without ever leaving the port (if you so desire). Personally, I like strolling through the shops here and then taking a taxi ($8 each way) to the downtown shopping area to get a real feel for the area. After returning, we go to Mr. Sancho's for a very reasonably priced beverage. There is everything here to make it a great port to visit.

So, my daughter and I visited Cozumel for 4 days. We jsut returned on the 25th. We visited the Chankanaab Park one day, passing by Puerta Maya. Many shops, restaurants and clean areas. On the way back I asked the driver to stop us there as we wanted to explore the shops and have a drink. He said he would but warned us that we couldn't shop there! It is ONLY for cruise passengers, as they ask you for your cruise ID. Supposedly these are Duty free shops. So, we continued to the city centre, where we were staying. The city center is only 5-7 minutes from Puerta Maya. Taxis will charge about $3USD each way to take you there. See other shops, the plaza, and more. The Palmeras restaurant right in front of the Ferry terminal has good food and prices. Great service, too. Starbucks is there as well. And if you feel adventurous, and have enough time, you can take the 30 minute ferry to Playa del Carmen, for $20USD RT. Spend a few hours in P del C. and come back to Cozumel in the evening. Ultramar ferries run until 10P.

The pier is long, bright white and hot. We walked outside the protected area. While there are a lot of hawkers, it is safe. We found local beers (reasonable prices) in stand-up coolers in many stores & pharmacies. There were also pirates and parrots to pose with and fish tanks full of fish waiting to nibble your toes. We brought back a couple of beers and sat under the thatched roof near the taxi stands before reboarding.

We went shopping while on our cruise March 2018. We were told a pendant was tanzanite. When we got it appraised for insurance it was not real. They lie about everything!!!

This port us owned by Carnival so if you want to experience real Mexico you'll have to go our into the town. But for those who aren't comfortable venturing out you can find most anything you need to spend a day there on your cruise. There are a couple restaurants, souvenir stores, shops offering higher end products, a liquor store, drug store, Dr. Fish, etc. No beach but there are hammocks right by the water.

Puerto Maya Cruise Pier In Cozumel: What To Expect

Another photo op at the Puerto Maya piern

If you are taking a Western Caribbean cruise, a stop at the cruise port in Cozumel is likely to be on your itinerary.

The port accommodates up to eight ships a day with more than 4 million passengers arriving each year.

Located approximately five miles south of the island’s largest city, San Miguel, the port in Cozumel is located in the southwest part of the city within the state of Quintana Roo. Cozumel, whose history dates back to the 16th century, happens to be the largest and most densely populated island in the Caribbean.

We recently stopped here on our Western Caribbean cruise on Regal Princess and discovered that we were one of four big cruise ships that had arrived the same morning. Oasis of the Seas , Regent Seven Seas Explorer and Carnival Legend docked at the same port bringing some tens of thousands of more passengers to Cozumel on that single morning.

The cruise port in Cozumel actually has three fingers: One dock, the International SSA dock, is used by Royal Caribbean ships. The Punta Langosta pier is used mostly by Disney and Norwegian Cruise Lines. The newest addition, the Puerto Maya Cruise Pier is owned and was built by Carnival Corporation for exclusive use by their brands. Estimated to cost some $20 million, this last pier opened in October 2015.

Puerto Maya Pier: A destination in itself

While many tourists visiting Cozumel sign up for one or more shore excursions (particularly those involving water sports—because the blue waters surrounding the island are so seductive), we had visited Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula many times before.

Instead, we decide decided to carve out a “virtual sea day” on Princess Regal. This meant staying on board on a port day when most other passengers would be off the ship.

Often, a week-long journey seems to fly away without ample time to appreciate the ship and all the onboard activities and we didn’t want that to happen.

But looking out from the top decks of the ship, it was hard to resist going outdoors and setting foot in the one Mexican port on our itinerary, at least for a short period of time. So we opted to take an early morning jaunt off-ship to explore the Puerto Maya pier.

Welcome to the Puerto Maya pier

Getting the lay of the land

It’s always nice to reach a port where you can walk off the ship without having to rely on tenders. Such is the case at Puerto Maya.

A concrete walkway extends from the ship to an air-conditioned arcade with duty-free shops.

The walkway from the ship to the shops

Along the way, there are plenty of photo ops–both for selfies and full-length portraits of your ship and some of the other magnificent ships around it. Photographers from our ship were also stationed on the pier to take photos.

The Puerto Maya pier offered one of the best opportunities to take a photo of Regal Princess from stem to stern

The walk to the shops is approximately 400 steps on a flat, even surface. Some of our fellow passengers traversed it on scooters or in wheelchairs. For anyone else with mobility problems, no-cost pedicab service was offered with only a tip requested for the driver.

Duty-Free Shopping

The nearby shopping arcade with duty-free shopping is managed by travel retailer Dufry AG. The well-kept store has offerings for almost every budget; the inventory includes foods and candies, perfumes and cosmetics, liquor, cigarettes, jewelry and admittingly, some pretty cheesy gift items. One area has items priced at $10 with hats, purses, ponchos and more.

The staff, who work by commission, are solicitous and helpful but not pushy. The Dufry website announces special promotions , allows for online ordering, and also lists custom allowances by country. Many tourists come in search of vanilla, silver jewelry, or tequila andr mezcal.

And more shopping outside

If you get through the arcade without making a purchase, an extensive open-air market awaits at the other end with shops selling merchandise of every kind as well as outdoor restaurants and watering holes.

One of the Mexican cantinas at Puerto Maya pier

Amidst lovely landscaping, more than 50 shops offer clothing, fine jewelry, and local souvenirs and crafts. In addition, there are numerous carts selling handicrafts.

We really enjoyed browsing around one of the largest shops, Los Cincos Soles , which sources items from all over Mexico.

Vendors at Puerto Maya pier pitching shore excursions For those who decide they do want to partake in excursions, there are last-minute opportunities to sign up on-the-spot. There are also places to sit in the shade and restroom facilities.

This way to the rest rooms

Once outside the mall, passengers can hail taxis to take them to the nearby beach (about 10-15 minutes away) or to the center of San Miguel.

The waiting taxi stand

Just across the street from the pier is an A-mart convenience store with a broad range of Asian and international products. It’s popular with cruise crew and the perfect place to head if you have run out of shampoo, toothpaste, sunscreen or anything else, including your favorite candy bar.

Crossing over to the other side

Warning: Once across the street, you are likely to be pursued, if not harassed, by street vendors and you’ll welcome returning to the respite of Puerto Maya Cruise Port, one of the cleanest, safest and best-organized cruise terminals in Mexico or in the Caribbean.

And that’s not all! If you have more time to explore the port city, see this post about the best things to do in Cozumel.

  • Your purse or any bags you are carrying will be searched before you enter the open area with shops at the Puerto Maya pier because cruise ship passengers are prohibited from bringing certain items into Mexico (e.g. fruits).
  • In addition, guests are asked to have a photo ID and their cruise card or medallion with them.

Explained: Duty-Free Shopping on a Cruise (Is It Worth It?)

When it comes cruising and duty-free shopping, don’t feel alone if you’re left confused. The labyrinth of regulations and rules regarding what is taxed and what isn’t can give you a headache.

At the same time, however, you can use these rules to your advantage and potentially save money on things like alcohol, cigarettes, and other pricey goods that are for sale in the duty-free shops aboard nearly every cruise (and in many ports of call).

So what exactly is duty-free shopping on a cruise? And does it really save you money?

What Is Duty-Free Shopping?

Discounted alcohol in a duty-free cruise shop

If you’ve traveled on a cruise before or been to an international airport, you’ve likely seen the bright signs for duty-free shopping. Heading inside these stores is like a trip to a sinner’s paradise. You’ll find fancy jewelry, alcohol, cigarettes, perfumes, chocolates, and more.

Since a set of special rules apply for places like airports and cruise ships, they are able to sell goods in these stores without consumers having to pay the same taxes on them that you’d see in a typical store.

For example, if you were to buy a bottle of alcohol in Miami, it would cost you not just the price of the bottle, but also the sales tax (7.0%) that’s tacked on.

In addition, many jurisdictions have heavy import taxes on things like alcohol or cigarettes, that are produced in another country. Most consumers never see these taxes or even know they exist as they are added into the price. So depending on where you live, there can be taxes at the federal, state, and city level. Of course, all that tax is then passed on to the final consumer in the form of a higher price.

Since duty-free shops get a pass on these rules, they can offer savings compared to back home. (We offer a price comparison of several example items below.)

How Duty-Free Shopping Works on a Cruise Ship or in Port

There’s no missing duty-free shopping on a cruise. There will be a shop on any large cruise ship you sail, attractively outfitted with a wide selection of alcohol, cigarettes, and other goodies. For those who like to have a drink or a smoke, you will be like a proverbial kid in a candy store.

As well, often when you head into port, duty-free shopping will be prominently featured. Some spots even have passengers walk through the shops as they walk off the ship into port.

Don’t go thinking, however, that you can buy discounted items to enjoy on the ship. If you buy a bottle of alcohol either on the ship or in port, you don’t get to enjoy it right away. Instead, it’s put in a sealed box. Your purchase will be held by the cruise staff and delivered to your room the last night of the trip.

If bought while in port, it will be taken by the cruise staff when you get back on board and returned at the end of the trip.

Duty-Free Doesn’t Always Mean Completely Tax-Free (Despite the Signs)

duty free cozumel cruise port

On the ship and in port, you’ll see signs advertising tax and duty-free. In that case, you can buy them on the ship without extra taxes. What you see is what you pay.

What this doesn’t mean, however, is that you are done with the taxman… or that you can simply buy barrels of booze and cigarettes to last you for years and bring them home.

That’s because once you get back home from your cruise, then you have to go through customs in the port terminal. At customs, you must declare everything of value that you are bringing back to the United States — including things you bought in duty-free shops.

To be honest, with most cruises, the official customs declaration is a thing of the past. These days you simply take a photo and walk out the terminal. But if you’re carrying a large amount of goods, don’t be surprised if an officer stops to ask what you have.

In most cases (there are all sorts of caveats), you are allowed up to $800 per person in goods before being charged duties on the amount. Duty amounts vary based on what item(s) you are bringing and the amount of goods you are bringing in. However, for many items, they run 3% for the first $1,000 over the $800 allowance.

There are exceptions for alcohol and cigarettes.

If you are bringing in alcohol, you are allowed only one liter of alcohol  per person under the personal exemption rules. You can bring in 200 cigarettes (or 100 cigars) per person under the personal exemption. Beyond that, you will be charged duty taxes on those items — even if the value is still less than $800.

So how much in alcohol or cigarettes can you bring back in? For alcohol there are no federal limits on how much you can bring, within reason. The rules call for the allowance for enough goods for “personal use.” So if you’re trying to lug home cases of booze, then you likely won’t get past customs (they’ll think you’re trying to import it for sale).

For tobacco, the limit (except in a few special cases) is 200 cigarettes or 100 cigars.

You can see the full details of duty rules at the Customs and Border Patrol website .

How Much You Will Be Taxed

How much will you be charged? It only comes out to be a few dollars per bottle. According to the Customs and Border Patrol website:

“The flat duty rate will apply to articles that are dutiable but that cannot be included in your personal exemption, even if you have not exceeded the exemption. For example, alcoholic beverages. If you return from Europe with $200 worth of purchases, including two liters of liquor, one liter will be duty-free under your returning resident personal allowance/exemption. The other will be dutiable at 3 percent, plus any Internal Revenue Tax (IRT) that is due. “

For that reason, it’s a good idea to save receipts.

Special Rules for Galveston Cruise Passengers

If you are sailing from Texas, things are a little different. There, you will be subject to state laws surrounding importing alcohol. Specifically, “the law limits personal importation by an adult to once every 30 days with limits of: 1 gallon of distilled spirits, 3 gallons of wine, and 288 ounces of malt beverages (24 12-ounce containers). “ Keep in mind that this is per adult. So a couple can bring in twice as much.

Furthermore, the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission has enacted a tariff where “cruise travelers disembarking out of the Port of Galveston will need to pay the tax for alcoholic beverages and cigarettes imported into the state that were purchased either on the ship’s duty free store or at a foreign port of call.”

That means every bottle or cigarette you bring back home will see a small tax. The tax runs about $3.75 for a liter or alcohol and $1.50 per pack of cigarettes. And to our knowledge, there is no personal exemption. Every bottle is hit with this tax.

To recap, here’s what you can expect when you bring goods through customs in Galveston:

  • Personal duty exemption of $800 of goods, including 1 liter of alcohol, and 200 cigarettes per adult. Amounts above your personal exemption are taxed at a rate of 3%.(Federal)
  • Texas laws allow you to bring back a total of only 1 gallon of alcohol or 3 gallons of wine per adult. Every bottle of alcohol or pack of cigarettes brought into Galveston will be taxed ($3.75 per liter/$1.50 per pack). (State)

So if you bring back a single liter of alcohol per person from the duty-free shop on the ship or in a port, you can expect a tax of $3.75 from the state. Expect each additional bottle to be taxed at $3.75 (state) plus 3% of the purchase price (federal), unless traveling with more than one adult. Keep this in mind when you’re comparing prices to what you would pay back home. Even with the tax, items bought in the duty-free shop can still be cheaper.

Is Duty-Free Shopping on a Cruise a Good Deal?

So how much can you save from shopping duty-free? Much of that depends on what you’re buying and where you live. Those living in states that have high taxes on things like cigarettes and alcohol will obviously benefit more from shopping duty-free.

As well, there are often discounts for buying multiple bottles, although keep in mind they will see a tax when bringing in more than one liter into the United States. For example, bottles of Grand Marnier seen on a recent cruise ran $36 each for a one-liter bottle, but two bottles for $60.

Also, bottles are most often one-liter when for sale on a cruise duty-free shop, compared to 750 mL you often find on land. So bottles are typically 33% larger than usual .

Below is a round-up of prices seen on a cruise to give you an idea of what you’ll pay compared to back home. Remember, this doesn’t include any tax that you might have to pay on land.

When we price compared these items to similar products at a local discount liquor store, we found prices in the duty-free shop were in-line or sometimes a few dollars cheaper in most cases. Deals from the duty-free shop were especially good when buying multiple bottles.

At the same time, the liquor store at home typically sells smaller bottles for around the same price as larger one-liter bottles on the ship. Finally, there isn't tax charged at a duty-free point of purchase, which saves you even more when compared to land.

In other words, the prices compared to back home aren't mind-blowingly lower, but can save you a decent amount, especially since there isn't any sales tax.

I bought a bottle of Bailey’s last year because it was quite a bit cheaper than my local NYC store. Last month I bought a couple of bottles of rum & tequila because NCL mistakenly gave me some onboard credit! Most of the time the prices don’t seem like much of a bargain.

To clarify it’s not, “Customs and Border Patrol”. It is “U.S. Customs and Border Protection”.

I purchased a bottle of Johnny Walker Blue Label Scotch Whiskey on Mardi Gras in Sept. 2020 as a special gift to my son. He has kept it and has just moved into the home he had built, and we took it out of the nice box it was in and noticed that somewhere near the top, there is apparently a leak which has compromised the contents and also damaged the box it which it sat. This is a rather expensive bottle of whiskey. I notified the Grans Ambassador of Carnival (John Heald) and he stated the Duty-Free ships are not owned by Carnival and that I would have to contact the store Manager of that ship too see if anything could be done. I don’t know how to even go about calling store on a ship. I may just have to chalk it up as a loss but has anyone had this issue and if so, how did you fix it or is it something that just can’t be fixed? Any suggestions would be grateful.

Duty Free bubble has burst at Nassau airport. I flew NAS to MIA on Monday and my stop into the Duty Free was a major sticker shock. $84 for a carton of cigarettes. They cost around $65 in Miami. The alcohol was no deal either. I was told they no longer do the duty free tobacco thing.

Dufry and Carnival unveil walk-through store at Puerta Maya port

MEXICO. Dufry and Carnival Corp have opened the rebuilt state-of-the-art walk-through duty free store at the Carnival-run Puerta Maya Welcome Center and Cruise Port in Cozumel, Mexico, Travel Markets Insider * has reported.

The official opening took place on 8 April, with guests including Carnival Corp Senior Vice President, Port and Destination Development Giora Israel, Dufry COO Central America & Caribbean Jose Gonzalez and Dufry Mexico General Manager Rodolfo Velasco.

The 12,000sq ft walk-through store hosts the first Hudson News outlet at a cruise port, and it also houses the largest Colombian Emeralds International store at a seaport.

“The Dufry duty free shop is the only shop located on a pier in the world,” said Carnival’s Giora Israel shortly after the ribbon cutting. “The store which we are here to open today is in a class of its own.”

The original Dufry shop on the Puerta Maya pier was destroyed during Hurricane Wilma in 2005. Carnival invested more than US$50 million to rebuild the new two-berth pier, which has been specifically constructed to withstand a threshold category 5 hurricane and can accommodate any ship in Carnival Corp’s cruise portfolio. Puerta Maya also includes a second pier to accommodate excursion ships.

“This cruise pier is the best pier built in the Caribbean,” noted Israel. The reconstructed pier was completed and reopened in October 2008.

Construction on Dufry’s new flagship store at the Puerta Maya cruise port was delayed until now, as Carnival developed plans to construct a third pier branching off from the current cruise pier. The delay ensured that the future pier construction would not encroach on the shop, and that the shop would be accessible to passengers disembarking from the pier once it was constructed, said Israel.

The port handles 8,000 people nearly every day (10,000 with crew), which is the average capacity of two ships, said Israel. Puerta Maya has 501 port calls scheduled in 2011. In the month of April alone 45 ships will visit the port. Carnival brings some 1.5 million passengers a year to Cozumel.

Dufry’s Jose Gonzalez commented: “We are very proud to be back in Cozumel, and more than that, we are honoured that Carnival Corporation has chosen us to manage the major duty free shop in the Caribbean. We have brought in a very upscale assortment of products with all our partnerships, including Hudson News, which is the first store in the Caribbean, and also with Colombian Emeralds. Working with Carnival Corporation, we will be managing the most luxurious duty free concession in the Caribbean.”

Carnival Director of Port & Destination Development David Candib added: “Carnival is certainly honoured to have Dufry partner with us in Puerta Maya to open what we view, certainly, as a world class shop. We are proud that it has taken time in terms of evaluating the concept, the look and feel of the building, and we could not be more proud of the build-out that Dufry has accomplished under the circumstances. This is one of the world’s busiest transit ports, with two berths, and to undertake the construction of this building while the port is in operation, practically five to six days a week, is quite monumental. This was a construction project that was done while passengers and crews were here and the port was open for business.

“Last year we received a million and a half passengers, and we are proud today to say that we have the additional offering of 12,000sq ft and the additional duty free merchandise and products that complements our offer. And the team that we have at Carnival Corporation and at Puerta Maya as well as at Dufry is certainly worth noting. What we have in Puerta Maya is one of the top welcome centres in the Caribbean.”

More about Puerta Maya Puerta Maya is located on about 12 acres, of which about eight have already been developed. In addition to the pier, about five acres are dedicated to a transportation centre, and 3-3.5 acres house the Welcome Center and commercial areas. An area has also been set up for shops and services for crew.

The transportation hub features a pick-up area divided into sections for taxis, rent a car, special excursions, buses and vans, to allow for up to 8,000 people within 90 minutes to be absorbed into the system and allow them to quickly disperse themselves in to the island.

In addition to the Dufry flagship store on the pier, the commercial aspects of Puerta Maya include about 40 speciality shops, ranging in size from 500sq ft to 3,500sq ft divided between jewellery, silver, tee-shirts, arts and crafts stores. The two largest of these stores are Ron Jon Surf Shop & Los Cinco Soles, a Mexican crafts and souvenirs shop that only carries items made in Mexico.

Dufry also operates a smaller 2,000sq ft satellite duty free store in the Puerta Maya Plaza, selling liquor, tobacco and some fragrances, which has been operational since the port reopened in 2008. Dufry also opened a small 1,000sq ft Tequilaria concept in mid-2009.

There are also 18 small kiosks, operated by local entrepreneurs and selling items up to US$25; five food & beverage facilities, and a permanent environmental exhibit that tells the story of the coral reefs that surround the island.

Best Shopping near the Cruise Port in Cancún

Kristin Busse

LAST UPDATED BY Kristin Busse March 27, 2019

Cozumel is a tropical island paradise located about an hour south of Cancun off the coast of Playa del Carmen. The island is a popular cruise ship port and boasts natural beauty like the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System right offshore, white sand beaches and the warm, sparkling Caribbean Sea. Cozumel was also very important to the Mayan civilization, so ancient history abounds on the island. Available activities including scuba diving and snorkeling, swimming with dolphins, bar hopping tours , salsa dancing, sailing tours, charter fishing, and more.

If you dock in Cozumel during your cruise, you'll want to see the best the island has to offer, and of course, you'll want to go shopping as well! Luckily there is plenty of shopping available within close proximity of the major cruise ship piers, Punta Langosta, the International Pier and Puerta Maya.

If you don't feel like straying far from your ship, Puerta Maya, Punta Langosta Mall and Royal Village Cozumel are perfect. If you want to experience a little of the real Mexico and see downtown San Miguel (Cozumel's only town), Plaza del Sol, the town square (zocalo) or Avenida Rafael Melgar, the coastal avenue, are both great places to do some shopping. While downtown, visit Pama, one of the few legitimate Duty-Free Department Stores in the Caribbean that's not located in an airport.

This is just some of the shopping available on the beautiful island of Cozumel. Enjoy your visit!

Lola Boutique Cozumel

This charming little locally owned shop, located on Rafael Melgar Avenue (the street that runs along the water downtown) between 3 & 5 Streets and below Chi Cozumel restaurant, is a great place to pick up unique, authentically Mexican items you won't typically find at a mall, including handmade Mexican clothing, gorgeous high-quality hats, beachwear, sandals, water shoes, jewelry, souvenirs, beach bags, caps and more. Customers visit over and over thanks to the personalized attention from Lola and her employees and reasonable prices. Please note that Lola Boutique Cozumel is closed on Sundays.

Duty free cigarettes, buy on ship or in port?

Cool Cruiser

Hi,  I am not a smoker, but have a friend who would like for me to get them some.  Is it better to buy on the ship or in port?  I will be going to Grand Cayman.  If you know the pricing?  It would be for marlboro.  I tried to search and did not see a specific thread with my question.  Thank you in advance!

On the ship for sure. I have priced out all the ports I think. Jamaica had some unknown brand a dollar or two less. I've read foreign made cigarettes also often dont taste the same.

Really hard to beat prices onboard. Try the duty free in cozumel but I didnt find cheaper.

Note only one carton is allowed by customs so if you do one of those buy 3 get 1 free deals, hide them in your suitcase. Customs never searched your suitcase.

I was buying for a  neighbor who was dying. Before someone lectures me.

10,000+ Club

I bought for my brother-in-law during our last two cruises (one Carnival and one Princess).  Both had a 4 for 3 deal, meaning 4 cartons of marlboros for $150.   We spread them out among our traveling companions.

Does anyone know what duty fee would apply if the extra 3 cartons were declared?

It's been a long time since I've read the regulations but I think anything over the allowance is subject to forfeit, so I looked to see what CBP says and found this (emphasis added):

Returning resident travelers may import tobacco products only in quantities not exceeding the amounts specified in the personal exemptions for which the traveler qualifies (not more than 200 cigarettes and 100 cigars if arriving from other than a beneficiary country and insular possession). Any quantities of tobacco products not permitted by a personal exemption are subject to detention, seizure, penalties, abandonment, and destruction.

It is a complex area and more detailed research is suggested before purchasing anything.

Thanks

It's my understanding that cruise lines routinely report large purchases to CBP, so searching may not be necessary.

I do know a watch was reported that was over the $800 personal limit and he was called aside. I think cigarettes would be much harder to monitor. They would have to mark anyone who bought more than a carton, not knowing if you have family to help carry them off.

I'd buy again. ..but that's me. The desk would need a picture of the people who bought more and be watching for them.

This dates me but I paid $8 a carton for Marlboro in the box on the Jubilee in '88.

Point of reference......One pack of Marlboro in Chicago runs $16/pack.  Tax man goes crazy ....

That is less than a single pack around here.

That is crazy, but I guess it might give the right incentive.  I think they are around $10 - $11 here.

Well, that explains why I couldn't find the fee.

I would think it would have to be more than a "normal" amount in order to be reported. They would probably just report it and let CBP sort it out as for who is actually bringing them back and this would be flagged to the passenger's name, which would be flagged to CBP and as with the watch they would be called aside. If a friend asked me to purchase for them I probably would but I haven't had the need myself since 2006, which was before we started cruising.

When I was in the Navy we were able to buy cigarettes tax free from the ship's store once we entered international waters. On my last ship in 1992 a carton of Marlboros was $5.90, generics $3.50. I look at cigarette prices now and am very, very glad that I quit, even though it was a heart attack that was the incentive to do so.

duty free cozumel cruise port

A Guide to the Cozumel Cruise Port

I f your Western Caribbean cruise visits Mexico, chances are, you’ll have a stop at the Cozumel cruise port – one of the major cruise ports in Mexico. This popular cruise ship port offers lots of activities and tourist attractions for families, whether you choose to stay in the port area, book an official cruise line excursion, or adventure off on your own unofficial excursion.

Cozumel is an island located off the Yucatan Peninsula in the Quintana Roo state of Mexico. It is officially an island, so you’ll have to take a ferry boat to get to the Mexican mainland.

However, there are many excursions, beautiful beaches, duty-free shops, and beach clubs right there, so you don’t have to leave the island. Cozumel is located across from Playa Del Carmen and Akumal and is in the Caribbean Sea.

We’ve had the opportunity to visit the Cozumel Mexico cruise port three times – once on the Disney Cruise Line’s Disney Fantasy , once on Royal Caribbean’s Odyssey of the Seas , and once on Royal Caribbean’s Allure of the Seas.

As an island, it’s quieter than some of the more popular areas in Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, like Cancun. It is beautiful though, with plenty of things to do and see, so it’s a great place to visit on your cruise.

My sailing on Royal Caribbean’s Allure of the Seas was complimentary. Activities in Cozumel were not included.

About the Cozumel Port Area

There are several cruise ship docks and ports in Cozumel – therefore, it can accommodate quite a few ships. If you are taking a taxi ride, be sure to make note of the port you are at so you can get back. However, many of the taxi drivers will know which ship is at which port for the day.

The amenities at each port will vary, but they all have the basics. You’ll be able to get a taxi at any of them. Unless you do some research in advance, you generally won’t be told which of the cruise terminals you are docking at – just that you are visiting Cozumel.

In some cases, you may need to take a tender boat to the port, but that is uncommon. Most ships visiting Cozumel will dock at one of the three ports.

The Mexican Peso is the currency in Cozumel. However, US dollars are accepted, so you probably won’t need to change money. We recommend bringing cash for tips and cabs.

The Puerta Maya pier generally hosts Carnival ships. It has restaurants, bars, and shops, including the usual cruise port staples like Del Sol and Diamonds International. The Puerta Maya cruise port does have a website with lots of helpful information, as well as a schedule of which cruise ships dock there.

The International Cruise Terminal hosts 40% of the cruise ships that dock in Cozumel. Cruise lines that utilize the International Pier include Disney Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean, MSC, and Celebrity. It also has duty-free shopping and restaurants in the Royal Village Shopping Center and is where you’ll find the more popular cruise ship restaurant staples, like Senor Frogs, the Hard Rock Cafe, and Margaritaville.

The third cruise terminal is the Punta Langosta, which is closest to the main city of San Miguel de Cozumel (also the largest city). It also offers a shopping area. Cruise lines that utilize the Punta Langosta pier include the Norwegian, MSC, and Holland America.

On the two times that we’ve been to Cozumel, we’ve docked at the International Terminal. There’s enough to do at the port that you could just stay in that area. If you are planning to take a cab, you’ll want to carefully follow the signs for the cabs. We found that it was a little tricky to locate the exit and the taxi stand – they like you to stay in the port to shop!

Things To Do in Cozumel

Want to do something within Cozumel but beyond the cruise port? There are lots of options. You can choose to book an official shore excursion or do something on your own.

The official shore excursions offered by the cruise line are generally available to book in advance and do sell out. These can be the best for your peace of mind because the tour operator will make sure you are back on the ship in time for departure.

If you are on your own, you’ll have more flexibility but have to be responsible for getting back to the ship in time.

All the cruise lines offer shore excursions, but the options will vary by ship, but some options include ATV rides, the Mayan ruins and archaeological sites, (San Gervasio and El Cedral), dolphin encounters, snorkeling, and a tour of the Mayan Cacao Company . Availability for kids may vary by age.

The Discover Mexico Cultural Park, which we visited during our Disney Cruise Line sailing, has unfortunately been permanently closed. It was one of the main attractions for families, so it’s a big loss.

Another of the more popular tourist destinations is Chankanaab, an adventure park. It offers a beach, animal shows, snuba, swimming with dolphins, a spa, and more. It’s one of the best places to visit in Cozumel.

Beach Clubs In Cozumel

When I visit the Caribbean on a cruise, I usually want to visit a beach. The beaches in the Caribbean are my favorites, and there are some fantastic options. You’ll usually see beach breaks included in the official excursions. They often include transportation and lunch.

For our most recent trip to Cozumel, we decided to book a day pass at a beach club on our own. Two options consistently came up in our searches, Mr. Sancho and Nachi Cocom. Both of these require you to book directly with them, and you’ll need to take local taxis on both ends of your trip. They are about 15-20 minutes from the cruise ports.

Mr. Sanchos is a private beach club offering an all-inclusive experience. Reservations are accepted in advance and are highly recommended. With the all-inclusive pass, you can eat from the buffet, receive unlimited drinks, get the use of beach loungers and umbrellas, and use lockers and restrooms. Other experiences are available for an additional cost, including massages, entrance to the aquatic park, horseback riding, and more.

Guests visiting Mr. Sanchos should bring pool towels from their ship. Otherwise, they are available for an additional rental fee.

Mr. Sanchos is very popular and can get busy when there are many ships in port for the day. It’s recommended that you book in advance.

Nachi Cocom

During our Royal Caribbean cruise this winter, we decided to book a day at Nachi Cocom Beach Club and Water Sports Center. I loved this experience and would visit Nachi Cocom on our next cruise stop in Cozumel.

Nachi Cocom only accepts 130 guests daily. Because of that, it never feels crowded. However, you will want to reserve as early as possible. There are often many cruise ship passengers in port, so things book up quickly. You’ll leave a deposit with your reservation and pay the balance once you arrive (credit cards are accepted).

We exited our ship at our leisure once we docked, and found our way to the cab line outside the port. After a 15-minute taxi ride, we arrived at Nachi Cocom. Like at Mr. Sanchos, you’ll want to bring towels off your cruise ship.

After paying the balance of our day pass, we were guided to a set of chairs and an umbrella. It was beachfront, with easy access to the water, the restrooms, and a bar. Right away, our drink order was taken, and we settled in to enjoy the beach.

Water sports, including banana boat rides and glass-bottom boats, as well as massages, are offered for an additional fee. The all-inclusive fee includes drinks, beach access, free WiFi, a pool, a hot tub, restrooms, outdoor showers, and more.

Around lunchtime, we received menus listing all of the meal options. We were able to choose four courses from the menu, which offers Mexican and American specialties. While I opted for seafood, including ceviche and grilled fish, my kids were happy to have more familiar American options.

We enjoyed our day at Nachi Cocom. It’s an absolutely beautiful beach, and the capacity restrictions made it peaceful and quiet. The drinks and service were also fantastic. While the beach is gorgeous, we also enjoyed spending some time at the pool, which was very quiet that day.

The water sports staff do come by to show you options. If you want to book something, you can do it at that time.

When we were ready to leave, our server ordered us a cab. It arrived after a short time, with plenty of time for us to get back to the ship. I’d recommend planning this process a little early, just to make sure you make it.

Our swimsuits were dry once we were ready to leave. But if you’d prefer to change out of your bathing suits, you should bring along a change of clothes in your beach bag. You’ll also want to bring cash to pay for the cab (both ways) and to tip the staff at Nachi Cocom. We used US dollars for both.

You’ll be dropped off in the same area where you picked up your cab. If you leave enough time, you can do some shopping in the port or can go right back to the ship.

Cozumel is a beautiful, bustling port of call, with plenty of activity options. Did we miss your favorite? Leave us a message and we’ll include it!
