Lorde, born Ella Marija Lani Yellic O’Connor on 7 November 1996, is an electro-pop singer and songwriter from Devonport, New Zealand.

Lorde signed to Universal Music Group in her early teens and was soon paired with producer and songwriter Joel Little (who has won Grammy Awards for songwriting and was the lead singer for New Zealand pop punk band, Goodnight Nurse). Little co-wrote and produced most of Lorde’s works, her first being “The Love Club EP” in March 2013. The EP reached the number two positions in national record charts in New Zealand and Australia.

A few months later Lorde released her debut single titled “Royals” and it was an instant, international hit. It even reached the top spot on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart, making Lorde the youngest solo artist to have a number one US hit single (the last artist to hold to title was Tiffany and her single “I Think We’re Alone Now” in 1987). “Royals” first gained so much recognition on YouTube for its video, directed by Joel Kefali, which received over 750,000 views.

“Pure Heroine,” Lorde’s debut “indietronica” album, was released later in 2013 and predictably achieved immediate chart success in her home country and Australia. The dream-pop album also reached number three on the US Billboard 200. Other than “Royals,” singles from the album include “Team,” “Glory and Gore” and “Tennis Court.”

Lorde has also collaborated with UK house and pop duo, Disclosure, who released a remix of “Royals” (combined with Aluna George’s “White Noise”). She has also become revered as one of the most influential teenagers in popular culture, famously speaking out about feminism being “completely natural” and condemning the media for photo shopping photographs of her; even tweeting an original image of herself next to the photo shopped one, stating “two photos from today, one edited so my skin is perfect and one real. remember flaws are ok :-)”

The Melodrama World Tour Brisbane

Lorde of the Riverstage

The best time to see an artist perform is when they have less than three albums, you are pretty much guaranteed to get an awesome set without filler and no exclusions. In this respect Lorde did not disappoint and along with Porter Robinson (also at the Riverstage in February) was one of the best gigs of the year.

Melodrama is an interesting album, despite receiving critical acclaim, I often glean that some yearned for a repeat of Pure Heroine. At 40 minutes the album at face value do not appear substantial, but those will be some of the best minutes of the year, emotionally charged, unique, at times energetic and more diverse than her first offering.

Lorde opened with Homemade Dynamite, a great way to start. Magnets was a special treat, I didn’t expect that the Disclosure track would make it into the set despite it’s strong showing in the 2015 Triple J Hottest 100. Lorde weaved here own personal narrative through the set, recalling the stories behind tracks Tennis Court (a personal favourite), A World Alone and the Louvre.

Lorde covered Springsteen’s I’m on Fire with guitarist Ray Suen, and worked in 400 Lux, a seminal moment which slowed the tempo at the midpoint of the set. Paying homage to Brisbane band Powderfinger, “I was raised on Powderfinger. That was my shit,” she said before blending an intro from My Happiness into Liability.

Pure Heroine tracks Royals and Team were well received, and built the intensity to the final song Green Light, cue the confetti storm. Lorde returned to play Loveless as the encore.

On the down side, there were no tracks from Hunger Games, Meltdown or Yellow Flicker Beat could have been worked well with the set. Writer in the Dark was a curious omission.

All in all, one of the best shows of the year, on a beautiful night, and well supported by George Maple, who will be playing in Brisbane this coming February.

Lorde is revolutionary for her age. Her first album to go big is one of the few that I can listen to all the way through and love every song that plays. "Pure Heroin" is exactly right, it's so addictive. Lorde is only 17 but speaks to issues and a lifestyle that is so much more than the other teenagers making music right now. There's real depth to it, unlike Kesha or Miley Cyrus - and her voice is amazing! I saw her live in Austin earlier this year, and it was incredible - her stage presence is so delightful and you can tell she is loving every minute of her success right now. She played all the songs on her album and talked a bit about them - but not so much that you just wanted her to get on with the show. Her music is so simple but her voice is so strong and powerful that it doesn't need any fluff in it. I love how she embraces her flaws and encourages us all to do so as well. You'll find her commenting on photoshopped pictures of herself ousting the editing that was done. She also tries to be conscious of the audience she is playing to - she knows that young people, girls especially, are listening to her music and she wants to portray the message of strength and independence; this is a welcome message from the boy dependent, superficial, materialistic songs that are being made by most pop music artists. She really stands out. Doesn't try to be sexy or show the world that she's growing up, it's much more grounded than that. If you haven't listened yet, I highly recommend it. I know I'll be waiting for her next album.

Omg. Where do I start? Amazinggggg.

The show all started when Tove Styrke got on stage. She was alright. I did like her cover of liability.

Next was Run The Jewels. And they focused on 3 things, People yelling “R T J!”, middle fingers, and flashing lights that could give you a seizure. I couldn’t even understand what they were saying. They had talent though.

Then, the queen came on. She started with Sober, like blue lights. Next was Homeade Dynamite and Tennis court. Amazing. Then colorful stage for magnets. Then Buzzcut Season and 400 lux, then came a new version of ribs. Then the louvre, hard feelings, and yellow flicker beat. Then she sat down, gave a 7 minute speech, and sang both writer in the dark and liabillity. Both really beautiful. Then she got up and sang Sober ll, and Supercut. Then, came the hits. ROYALSSSS. She invited us to sing and we all lost our voices. Then came Perfect Places. With a child choir which was cute. Then the last song was green light, she sang it and before the confetti, she told us to jump, and “fucking lose it”. Then there was A LOT (almost too much) CONFETTIII!!!! Then she went off. Then came back on for the encore, It had Loveless, then a non released catchy song called “Precious Metals”, then her last song (for real) was Team. She went down to General Admission at the end. And gave everyone high fives. IT WAS AMAZING. Definitely go see her if she’s coming near you.

Oh Lorde she is not one to disappoint! Singing all the favourites from her most recent album 'Pure Heroine' and more of her latest songs I hadn't even discovered before. While performing at Festival Hall, in Melbourne I didn’t think the venue put Lorde’s talent to justice but maybe it was just the seating. I feel like Lorde deserved a much larger ‘stadium-like’ venue to allow as many people as possible to witness one of the most prominent artists in the "post-millennial" era. Only a 17 year old from New Zealand, I don’t think you can get anymore unique than that! I was worried it was going to be one of those ‘one set stage’ performances but Lorde managed to have a costume change in the middle of her hit song “Team”! Along with varying Special effects including lights, cameras and a lot of action in the background while she was singing. There was a revolving chandelier, many different coloured lights, and a screen to allow those not in the mosh pit to see her face up close, adding to the atmosphere. Her accompanying act was way better than I expected, SAFIA has now got a new number one fan. The concert overall was very memorable leaving me wanting to relive all the songs performed on the night from both acts. Can’t wait for another concert from the one and only, Lorde!

EPIC. Fireworks, smoke, flashing lights ... costume changes, short videos, chat sessions ... this was one of the best concerts I’ve been to ! Somehow it didn’t feel super super extravagant and large scale though, which I loved because it made the whole experience so much more intimate. We arrived at around 6, and because that was when the gates opened we expected people to have been already lining up for ages and we thought we would get a terrible place in the mosh pit but we were actually still so close to the front! I loved how Lorde chatted to us like friends and really interacted with the audience. She comes across as such a wonderful, kind and genuine young woman, and it was so gorgeous to watch her sing and dance her beautiful heart out. She played a lot of her old music from Pure Heroine as well which was awesome - including Royals, Team, Tennis Court, Buzzcut Season and Ribs. She also played Magnets (by Disclosure) and a beautiful rendition of I’m on Fire (Bruce Springsteen) in combination with 400 Lux. That was possibly my favorite performance of the night. Green Light was the finale and was absolutely awesome of course. I would highly recommend you see Lorde live for an amazing once in a lifetime experience!!

Oh my Lorde! I highly recommend all lovers of music to attend at least one Lorde concert - it was the best concert I've been to yet! Couldn't fault it; her tone was perfect, her dancing crazy and awesome, her humbleness astounded me especially how she informed the audience of meaning of her songs. The atompshere was buzzing! She captured her audience, with her use of the whole stage and just having a good time! The lights were great and added a good vibe to her performance. I thought it was lovely how she apologised for rescheduling her show "I'm so sorry for having to reschedule I became gravely ill in Las Vegas - mum told me I had to reschedule. I told her 'I'm going to Australia if I have to go on my own'. I also thought if I'm this sick I can't give you guys a proper performance- I wouldn't be able to dance around and get into it like I'm doing tonight!" I honestly cannot stress enough how great this show was - any age can go, sing their heart out and dance till their feet fall off. This young kiwi girl definetly has a "speeshil" (how she pronounces the word special) nack for performing and entertaining - knowing what the audience wants to see! If I was to rate it, honestly 10/10- had the best night ever!

At the center of the stage there’s a staircase on the top of a round structure. The whole thing is placed on a round platform.

During the first song, Leader of a New Regime, Lorde plays from behind a screen.

The support singers look like akward nerds dressed like The Beatles in the 60s. Their dresses are the color of the sun. Lorde's look is curated by Karla Welch.

She is really good at switching between her newer songs, with acoustic guitars, and the older ones with electronic bases.

In Buzzcut Season the support singers do a good job providing support voices. Their performance is quite staged, with them turning towards the audience only when they are singing.

It’s in this song that I realized how powerful the voice ensemble is.

Lorde’s songs, like Lana Del Rey’s, seem to describe a lazy life spent on the side of pools, just enjoying oneself.

During the songs she takes time to interact with the crowd, she reflects on what happened in Oslo last week, and she tells about her memories of visiting the city. She also shares how she got rid of stage fright.

A camera films her so that it is possible for everyone in the audience to see her expressions.

A great experience overall.

What can I not say about this queen bee? She's barely 18 years old (birthday in November) and it's exhilarating to watch her evolve. Today's pop music needs a facelift and a lot of us are counting on Lorde. She is currently touring smaller theater venues to get her feet wet. Sure, she could have accepted the offer to tour with Katy Perry and jumped right into the stadium crowd. But this is Lorde, and she already knows that she will be bigger, and she will do it her own way. For those of you who got to see her in theses smaller venues, consider yourself lucky because she will get bigger and bigger and pretty soon it will get harder to get that intimate experience. I'm one of those lucky ones and what I saw was just mind blowing. To me, she almost has that spellbinding Stevie Nicks presence. Her outfit was a simple two piece (with costume changes into different colors) yet she was more seductive than artists who show more skin.

Right now, her live performance is a bit unpolished, but what I saw was a taste of possible perfection to come. Give her two more years to work out the kinks and she will surely bring magic to stadiums across the world!

Shoutout to Lorde for being the most wonderful human being on the planet.. Only seventeen and across the world from her home of New Zeland touring?? Fricken amazing.

So I love Lorde and she made the wait to see her live sooo worth it! She played most of my favorite songs from her album Pure Heroine. The concert was crazy and up beat. Not to mention the awesome lights, fog bubbles, and confetti (WITH HER FACE ON IT) that covered the crowd!!! The venue I was at had GA so everyone was all squished together in an amazing pit of Lorde love and sweat, dancing and having the time of their lives. Definitely my favorite concert I've ever been to and I can not wait until she is back in the area so I can see her again!!! Some fun facts: All of her props that she uses on stage are from her home town in NZ The bass is sooo crazy, be ready! She spent a good six minutes just talking about her life and creating her album (Not gonna lie I was tearin up a little) It was actually the best night of my life

Lorde's first of two shows in Berkely 10/2/14 was nothing short of amazing. She sounds just like she does on her record with her powerful vocals. The atmosphere was incredible with her energetic dancing around stage, her multiple costume changes, visually beautiful setup and all around great music quality. She played her entire album along with 2 EP tracks (bravado and biting down), 2 covers (Kanye west and Bon iver), her single song No Better, and what made the night really special was premiering her single she dropped 2 days before Yellow Flicker Beat for the first time live. She reflected on the times she's been in the bay area before and made us all feel special and loved, everything about the show was great I couldn't have asked for a better show, and afterwords she met the fans, myself included making it one of the best concerts I've ever been to. She is incredibly sweet, kind, and talented. I would always recommend for others to see her live show, it'll make them say Praise the Lorde!

Lorde announces new album Solar Power and world tour dates

Get ready to dance like no one's watching.

Lorde is back, and she's ready to rule your playlists.

A little more than a week after dropping her new summer bop, "Solar Power," which was streamed 30 million times in five days, the singer has announced the release date and track list of her upcoming third album, which arrives Aug. 20.

Produced by Jack Antonoff , the LP, also titled Solar Power, boasts 12 new songs inspired by the "natural world," Lorde said in a statement.

In a letter emailed to fans earlier this month, Lorde revealed details about the album and its visuals. "There's someone I want you to meet," she wrote. "Her feet are bare at all times. She's sexy, playful, feral, and free. She's a modern girl in a deadstock bikini, in touch with her past and her future, vibrating at the highest level when summer comes around. Her skin is glowing, her lovers are many. I'm completely obsessed with her, and soon you will be too… It's my divine pleasure to be introducing you, at long last, to my third studio album, SOLAR POWER."

Lorde added that the record is infused with "that infectious, flirtatious summer energy that takes hold of us all" and that it immortalizes "the deep, transcendent feelings I have when I'm outdoors. In times of heartache, grief, deep love, or confusion, I look to the natural world for answers. I've learnt to breathe out, and tune in."

To promote the album, the 24-year-old songwriter recently unveiled a cheeky photo of her leaping over a camera on her website . Her pal Ophelia snapped the shot in New Zealand. She also confirmed that she'd reunited with "Royals" director Joel Kefali for the "Solar Power" video, which features her in a yellow skirt and top, dancing in the sand as she sings an ode to the warmer months. The works form "an entire cinematic universe."

"I made something that encapsulates where I'm from — my family, my girlfriends, my outdoors, my constant ruminations," she said.

Lorde also announced the dates for her 2022 world tour, which kicks off Feb. 26 in New Zealand and lands in North America on April 3 in Nashville. Her final U.S. date will be May 7, 2022, in Santa Barbara.

Lorde Announces Tour, Reveals Release Date and Tracklist for New Album Solar Power

By Evan Minsker and Allison Hussey

Lorde

Lorde made her big return earlier this month with the release of “ Solar Power ” and the promise that a new album of the same name would arrive later this year. Today, she’s officially announced the follow-up to 2017’s Melodrama : Solar Power is out August 20. Find the tracklist and already-iconic album cover below.

Along with the detailing of her album, Lorde has announced a 2022 tour. She’ll start things off in her native New Zealand in February before heading to the United States and Canada for spring concerts. Lorde’ll then go to Europe and the United Kingdom for more shows. Find her schedule below.

“Solar Power” arrived with a new music video co-directed by Lorde and previous collaborator Joel Kefali. The song was co-written and co-produced with Jack Antonoff. Phoebe Bridgers and Clairo provided backing vocals on the song. “The album is a celebration of the natural world, an attempt at immortalising the deep, transcendent feelings I have when I’m outdoors,” Lorde wrote in a newsletter upon the single’s release.

According to a press release, as an alternative to being released on CD, Solar Power will be available as “an eco-conscious Music Box,” which has visual content, handwritten notes, photos, and a download card. “I decided early on in the process of making this album that I also wanted to create an environmentally kind, forward-thinking alternative to the CD,” Lorde said in a statement. “I wanted this Music Box product to be similar in size, shape and price to a CD, to live alongside it in a retail environment, but be something which stands apart and that’s committed to the evolving nature of a modern album.”

In November 2019, Lorde wrote in a newsletter update to fans that she had paused work on a new album as she struggled with grief after the death of her dog Pearl. But in May 2020, she issued another update where she said she’d started working on a new album in December.

Last year, Lorde announced Going South , a photo book of images shot by her friend Harriet Were during their trip through Antarctica in 2019. This spring, the singer-songwriter made an appearance alongside Marlon Williams during a performance in Auckland to cover Bruce Springsteen’s “Tougher Than the Rest.”

Find out where Melodrama landed on Pitchfork’s “ The 200 Best Albums of the 2010s .”

Lorde Makes Up for Lost Time With Blissful Tour Opener in Nashville

By Jon Freeman

Jon Freeman

NASHVILLE — “This is crazy for me — I haven’t been just somewhere else doing this,” Lorde told the audience at Nashville’s Grand Ole Opry House midway through opening night of her 2022 Solar Power tour.

She wasn’t kidding: Though she’s had one-off appearances here and there, the New Zealand singer-songwriter’s last full concert took place in Mexico City in 2018, when she was touring behind her second album, Melodrama . Her sun-kissed 2021 album Solar Power was released into an entirely different world , one that was reeling from pandemic isolation and a little rusty on having communal music experiences. Thankfully, it’s an album that was designed to soothe and make that reentry process easy.

Split across a series of three acts, the Solar Power tour leaned heavily on material from its namesake album, but threw in a heavy dose of Melodrama and a sprinkling of Pure Heroine for a show that could be intimate one moment, ecstatic the next. Hard to say if it was inspired by Lorde’s long gap between tours, but the passage of time even worked its way into Lorde’s set design — the focal point of her stage was a massive fulcrum that rotated a full 360 degrees at its base and doubled as both a sundial and a stairway ascending into the heavens. A giant orb was suspended above it on a backdrop, accented by dramatic lighting that made it glow in multiple colors.

In her opening act, Lorde began “Leader of a New Regime” behind the large circular base of the stairway, only her silhouette visible to the audience. When she emerged to sing “Homemade Dynamite,” she was in an oversized pastel-green pantsuit, dancing down a set of risers from the back as the audience shouted along. Only a small group of accompanists, all in matching yellow suits, were onstage, and they stood nearly motionless — as much set decoration as backing band.

Lorde returned to the stage for the second act in a backless yellow dress and sang “The Path,” kicking off a run of songs that exemplified the blissed-out vibe of Solar Power more than any other part of the concert. Other band members joined her on the stage, tapping out relaxed drum grooves and watery guitar sounds that called to mind Sixties psychedelic pop and sunset-to-sunrise beach parties, with a brief piano-only section that included “Dominoes” and “Loveless.”

Editor’s picks

The 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history, every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term.

Even the electronic pulse of the Pure Heroine cut “Ribs” seemed at home in this section of the show, though Lorde’s way of hugging her sides at the end of the song indicated that heavy emotions were welcome to come out in this golden environment.

“I’ve got a lot of shit I’m gonna be pulling to the surface and releasing on this tour,” she said. “If you have any of those big, similar emotions want to let free in this very safe space, you are invited to do so.”

Those big emotions from the crowd were expressed most loudly on the selections from Melodrama . With her third and final set, Lorde — this time in a leotard with a glimmering, exaggerated bustle — ramped up the tempo with a few of her older tunes. The darker undertone of Solar Power ‘s “Mood Ring” gave way to “Sober” and “Supercut,” during which Lorde danced in joyous, spontaneous fashion while the audience sang along, then applauded when she collapsed in dramatic fashion on the stage.

Lorde joked about having written the sun-kissed “Solar Power” while “sitting on a rock in the middle of the ocean,” then walked around the edge of her rotating stage as if crashing through the hours to find the next sunrise. The set closed with the pulse-quickening rush of “Green Light,” followed by the “gentle comedown,” in Lorde’s words, of “Oceanic Feeling.” For her encore, she reprised breakout hit “Royals” and added in the Solar Power cut “Hold No Grudge.”

The Grand Ole Opry House tends to go underused outside of its main duties hosting the long-running Opry show, so it was a surprising, unlikely spot for Lorde to kick off this iteration of her tour (on Grammy Awards night , no less). No matter — the young pop star made up for lost time, ensuring everyone in the crowd felt welcome to get what they needed out of the experience, and they didn’t let her down.

“Oh my goodness me, Nashville,” Lorde told the crowd earlier in the show. “Thank you for being such a kind, sensitive little group of fuckin’ ragers.”

Solar Power Tour Set List: “Leader of a New Regime” “Homemade Dynamite” “Buzzcut Season” “Stoned at the Nail Salon” “Fallen Fruit” “The Path” “California” “Ribs” “Hard Feelings” “Dominoes” “Loveless” “Liability” “Secrets from a Girl (Who’s Seen It All)” “Mood Ring” “Sober” “Supercut” “Perfect Places” “Solar Power” “Green Light” “Oceanic Feeling”

Encore: “Royals” “Hold No Grudge”

Lorde Announces ‘Solar Power’ New Album, World Tour

Lorde performing live.

Lorde – Story by Cat Badra, photo by Ken Settle

Lorde’s new album comes in an “environmentally kind, forward-thinking alternative to the CD” format

After some time out of the spotlight, singer-songwriter Lorde is back with a new album. Lorde’s upcoming studio record, “Solar Power,” will hit stores Aug. 20, and she’ll embark on a world tour in 2022 to support the new tunes.

Lorde’s 2022 North American tour still set off April 3 in Nashville, Tennessee, and run through a May 7 date in Santa Barbara, California. Tickets for the newly announced run will go on sale to the general public starting this Friday (June 25) at 10 a.m. local venue time. For ticket information, head to Lorde’s official website .

What’s extra unique about this release is that “Solar Power” will arrive in a new “discless” music format that serves as a replacement for a CD. The format, called “Music Box,” includes bonus visual content, handwritten notes, photos and a download card.

Lorde calls “Solar Power” a “celebration of the natural world,” plus “an attempt at immortalizing the deep, transcendent feelings I have when I’m outdoors.”

She adds, “In times of heartache, grief, deep love, or confusion, I look to the natural world for answers. I’ve learned to breathe out, and tune in. This is what came through.”

Lorde’s “Solar Power Tour” Lights Up Radio City Music Hall: Recap, Photos + Setlist

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

The post Lorde ’s “Solar Power Tour” Lights Up Radio City Music Hall: Recap, Photos + Setlist appeared first on Consequence .

She has risen. Lorde returned to the stage in New York City — on Easter Monday, no less — just days after postponing a number of shows due to laryngitis. Maybe there was some residual throatiness to the Kiwi pop megastar, but it barely registered. The beauty of her full-fledged “Solar Power Tour” production at the iconic Radio City Music Hall was enough to cure any ill feelings.

Talking about “post-pandemic live music” is already becoming cliché, but we can’t discount how the last two years impacted performances. On one hand there are acts like Lorde’s opener, former Artist of the Month Remi Wolf . Here’s someone who broke out during a lockdown where the only music absorption came via streams and TikToks. Now, with touring back in full swing, she’s playing Radio City. Think about the mental gymnastics that have to take place when going from a small headlining set at Music Hall of Williamsburg to Radio City Music Hall opening for Lorde in just six months.

Could any young performer who’d barely gotten their stage legs handle such a big venue?

For Remi, the answer is a big, fat, stinking, steaming, star-making yes. With absolutely zero stage production and only a guitarist and drummer (and backing track) behind her, the Juno singer completely devoured her show. She used the ramparts on both sides of the stage, the aisles between the seats, and her own infectious energy to reach every inch of the great concert hall.

A lesser up-and-comer may have garnered polite applause as an opener in a city like this in a venue like that; Remi Wolf had the whole room on their feet by the end, proving she’s a performer only beginning to express her live dominance.

Remi Wolf, photo by Ben Kaye

Then on the other hand there’s Lorde. Firmly a modern pop icon, even a so-so received pandemic album isn’t going to slow her down. Where Remi could do little but dream of performing live over the last few years, Lorde and her resources were able to dream up whatever they wanted, knowing that when live returned, they could welcome it with open wallets.

This, perhaps, is why so many shows from major artists recently have been precisely choreographed theater experiences. The “Solar Power Tour” features a setlist broken down into Acts (literally; it’s on the production crew’s notes), each marked by a costume change (one of which takes place on stage in silhouette), all carefully blocked around a custom constructed set.

There’s definitely room for rearrangement, as a cursory look at Setlist.fm will reveal, which gives space for a few treats. On Monday night, that included only the second-ever performance of “Big Star” (a song Lorde introduced as one she “never thought [she’d] sing live”) and a partial cover of ROSALÍA’s “HENTAI.”

Lorde, photo by Ben Kaye

Still, the very nature of these sort of pre-plotted concerts saps some of the earnestness of the performance. You could make arguments about music – pop in particular – being most powerful in its abilities to manipulate emotion, same as a Broadway experience, so a theatrically laid out concert is just an extension of that dynamic. But the dichotomy of that is acknowledging everything an artist says and does in these situations is predetermined, which removes the spontaneity – or at least, the illusion of it – that can be such an important part of concerts.

So perhaps all the banter about her songs focusing on the way “emotions affect our bodies – how feelings can change the way we feel” was somewhat scripted; to some extent, isn’t most stage banter? What truly felt rehearsed about the “Solar Power Tour” was the small, deliberate movements of both the stage and Lorde’s band.

Dressed in matching mustard-colored suits, the musicians and backup singers moved slow and stiff through different songs, so subtle that sometimes you forgot they were there – which is kind of a shame, because there were moments when they really shined musically. It felt like a less energized David Byrne production, which isn’t meant as a criticism, as it fit the sort of melodramatic (pun) pop Lorde delivers at her best.

Plus, the meticulous positioning of the band members lent itself to the shapes (as my high school theater teacher would describe it) of the stage design. Lorde’s team came up with a relatively simple looking set: a staircase rising toward a vanishing point propped against what looked like the shell of a giant bass drum, positioned on a rotating base surround by asymmetrical stairs, all in front of a projection screen with a giant circle at its center. (Okay, it’s a little more complicated in description than in reality.)

It gave the impression of a giant sundial (see what Lorde did there?), and kept what was occasionally static choreography (save for when Lorde let herself go, as she’s wont to do) from seeming fully… well, static. Everything felt constantly layered and leveled, elevated even further by some incredible graphic design, like when that giant circle turned into an eclipse or was surrounded by mirrored projections of Lorde.

Look, there’s so much focus on the stage here because that’s precisely the type of show Lorde is bringing to audiences: one that’s about the design as much as the music. The tracks off Solar Power tended to blend together if you weren’t a superfan (and Radio City was filled to the brim with those; and no, Lorde didn’t shush the crowd at any point). Standouts included “Mood Ring,” “California,” “Stoned at the Nail Salon,” and the confetti-cannon assisted “Solar Power” itself. That the main highlights came from Melodrama (“Hard Feelings,” “Supercut,” the still perfect “Green Light”) and Pure Heroine (the one-two encore of “Royals” and “Team”) probably doesn’t shock to anyone.

So what becomes truly interesting is how it was all presented . The “Solar Power Tour” is very much Lorde in 2022, less about the bangers and more focused on subtler beauties. Her costume changes were often stunning (the dress worn for the encore was red carpet-worthy); the set, at worst, intriguing; and the songs themselves showcasing a matured, individualist pop performer comfortable in her identity. It was not like the raucous energy of Remi Wolf, but it was a fascinating and equally engaging contrast.

Both performers put on captivating performances, both from different sides of the post-pandemic spectrum. One tore up a large, empty stage, one fashioned a beautiful production based on her quieter aesthetics. The fact that both worked so well in a space the size of Radio City Music Hall demonstrates that no matter your approach, a good show is a good show — especially in 2022.

"One of the things I find most frustrating about social media is performative activism, predominantly by white celebrities (like me)," Lorde wrote at the time. "It's hard to strike a balance between self-serving social media displays and true action. But part of being an ally is knowing when to speak and when to listen, and I know that white silence right now is more damaging than someone's wack protest selfie. In a fan email today, LORDE shared how this show at the Shrine, as well as all of her Solar Power tour dates is going to feel:

“It’s midsummer. It was a pool day, but the light is starting to fade and people are getting hungry, so I change out of my swimsuit into something light, a vintage Dries slip maybe, apply a slick of tinted gloss, and start laying out little dishes of Castelvetrano olives and pickled fennel and sardines and this sheep’s cheese called Devotion, isn’t that a great name for a cheese, and rummage around in the fridge for what to cook. The garden is exploding, a riot of flowers and bees, the small space seeming taller than it is wide. Someone turns on the festoon bulbs that overhang the swimming pool, and music starts to play. Everyone switches to mezcal. I walk outside to the Weber, light it, feel the house and garden start to subtly change gears. I grill zucchini and halloumi and too-juicy nectarines, watching the char marks darken. Tall beeswax candles are lit. The lady of the house consumes an edible. Someone puts on an old song, someone else says, “Oh my God, I haven’t heard this since (…)” Two girls standing up by the piano start to dance, holding their hands out to each other, laughing — it’s just dinner on a summer’s night, but the world is just starting to tilt. Later, we’ll all be faded dancing in each other’s arms somewhere, but for now everything’s still light, shoes are off and sundresses are on and the night is all potential. That’s how the show is gonna feel.”

Stream LORDE’s new song “ Solar Power ” below. The song, which appropriately dropped timed to the only solar eclipse of the year, came alongside the announcement of her highly anticipated third studio album of the same name,  Solar Power , is out Aug. 20 via Republic Records.

Lorde performing

Oh, Lorde. Four years after her last music release, the two-time Grammy Award-winning singer has finally blessed us mere mortals with a new track, “Solar Power” — a tune that celebrates the summer, sunshine, and just pure, good vibes.

The release threw Twitter into a frenzy earlier this month, after an accidental leak . And even before it debuted on June 10, “Solar Power” had already caused some major drama. When Lorde updated her website with the album artwork — an image of herself that is well, quite literally, cheeky — she just about broke the internet. With that in mind, we all want to know: will Lorde tour the UK anytime soon?

Luckily, for fans of the “Royals” hitmaker, a UK tour is indeed on the way, and Lorde will be arriving to perform a string of dates in the UK in 2022. In a statement to Bustle, it has been confirmed the singer’s 40+ date international tour will follow the release of her upcoming album Solar Power on August 20, 2021.

The tour will kick off in Lorde’s homeland of New Zealand in February 2022, and then move on to Australia and North America before arriving in the UK for six shows starting at the O2 Academy in Leeds on May 25. From there, the singer is scheduled to perform in Edinburgh on May 26, in Manchester on May 28, and in Birmingham on May 30. The UK leg of the tour will then culminate with two dates at the Roundhouse in London on June 1 and June 2, and tickets for the upcoming shows will go on sale at 10 a.m. on Friday, June 25.

In addition to The Solar Power Tour in 2022, there’s also another way you can see Lorde live in the not too distant future. Yup, that’s right, in person, at an actual festival. She’ll be performing at the second weekend of Barcelona’s Primavera Sound on June 10, 2022, alongside other big headliners including The Strokes, Megan Thee Stallion, and Dua Lipa, among others. Talk about a fantastic lineup. It promises to be phenomenal — and you can buy tickets here .

In the meantime, you’ll just have to rewatch the “ Solar Power” music video over and over again, soaking in the good vibes, until our Lorde and saviour finally hits the road again

Travel and Parking

Traffic is always chaotic around Downtown Houston, and it will likely be even crazier for the first game of the season. It would be smart to get away a few minutes early to make sure you don’t miss the first pitch. For parking, one option is the Star Garage at 703 Fannin St., which will run you around $20 and is roughly a 12-minute walk from the stadium.

The Matchup

The Astros will be hosting the Yankees , who have been a familiar AL foe for the Astros since their first World Series run in 2017. In their most recent postseason series, the Astros cruised to a 4-0 sweep in the 2022 ALCS.

The Astros will be starting pitcher Framber Valdez, while the Yankees will start Nestor Cortes.

The Vindys Will Open for Pat Benatar on US Tour

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Vindys will reach a new milestone this summer when they go on a national tour with a major artist.

The Youngstown-based rock band will be the opening act for Pat Benatar and Neil Giraldo for their July 6-Aug. 10 shows. The tour, which was announced today, includes 21 dates, including a July 10 concert at MGM Northfield Park near Cleveland.

Most of the remaining dates are on the East and West coasts.

Jackie Popovec, singer and frontwoman for The Vindys, said her band knew Benatar and Giraldo because they opened shows for the act twice before.

will lorde go on tour

Still, she was surprised when The Vindys were asked to be the opener on their summer tour.

“The last time we opened for her, she was the sweetest person to me,” Popovec said. “I was so afraid of her the first time and stayed out of her way.”

But The Vindys must have left an impression on Benatar, because the second time the band opened for her, “she recognized me and gave me a big hug,” Popovec recalled. “After our set she said, “Oh my God, you guys are so good.”

Tickets for the Northfield concert go on sale at 10 a.m. Friday via ticketmaster.com .

With The Vindys’ touring schedule becoming more frequent and widespread, Popovec said the band recently bought a tour van.

The band has two other opening act gigs in the near future.

The Vindys will open for ZZ Top on Wednesday, March 27, at the Stranahan Theater in Toledo; and for Donnie Iris and the Cruisers on April 6 at The Bluestone in Columbus.

The Vindys opened for Iris on March 16 at a sold-out UPMC Events Center near Pittsburgh – the first show by the Pittsburgh rock legend since returning from his bout with cancer.

Four-time Grammy winner Benatar was a rock radio ruler in the 1980s and is considered one of the greatest female voices in rock.

She produced a string of 19 Top 40 hits, including “Hit Me with Your Best Shot,” “Love Is a Battlefield,” “We Belong” and “Invincible.” Benatar has had seven platinum albums and has sold more than 35 million albums worldwide in her career.

She began working with songwriter-producer Giraldo, a Cleveland native, as her musical director early in her career. The two have been married since 1982.

In 2020, Benatar was nominated for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame but fell short.

In addition to Popovec, The Vindys members are John Anthony, Rick Deak, Owen Davis, Brendan Burke, Nathan Anthony, Kyle O’Donnell, Brian Mayle and Garret Kuchmaner.

Megan Thee Stallion is hissing to a city near you on the Hot Girl Summer Tour.

The Houston native and "Hiss" hitmaker will embark on a 31-city worldwide tour, produced by Live Nation, featuring Grammy-nominated "Yeah Glo!" rapper GloRilla . The arena tour marks Megan Thee Stallion's first time headlining.

The summer tour comes amid a comeback year for the rapper. Her latest single "Hiss" debuted atop the No. 1 on Billboard's Hot 100 last month and the song now owns the record for the biggest first week for a solo female rap song ever. She previously topped the list with her "Savage Remix" alongside Beyoncé and her Cardi B collaboration "WAP."

In its first week, "Hiss" garnered 29.2 million first-week streams, 2.9 million radio airplay audience impressions and 104,000 downloads,  according to Billboard . This year, she inked a one-and-first-of-its-kind agreement with Warner Music Group where she will release music independently with assistance from WMG. The agreement allows Megan Thee Stallion to retain ownership over her masters and publishing.

The upcoming tour also follows an ongoing feud featuring lyrics from "Hiss," which takes aim at her hip-hop peers after a series of personal controversies and crises over the past few years.

Australian comedian Rove McManus on celebrity friends, music and the power of live TV

Rove McManus hosting his TV show Rove [live] circa 2002

"Say hi to your mum for me."

To a certain generation, that catchphrase is iconic. It speaks to how closely Rove McManus is woven into Australia's cultural fabric.

He's a three-time Gold Logie-winning media personality who came to fame hosting the eponymous Rove, where he rubbed shoulders with Hollywood elite and Australian celebrities alike.

Capitalising on US TV's deathless late-night talk show format and in the lineage of Hey Hey It's Saturday and Graham Kennedy, Rove (aka Rove Live) embraced the chaotic potential of live television with a distinctly homegrown larrikin spin, making its titular host the king of appointment television during the 00s.

"That was the peak," McManus recalls. "We started in 1999 – that was a fun, off-Broadway production – but it properly kicked in at Channel 10 in 2000.

"By 2003 was when I felt like we were part of the fabric. [It felt like] 'I'm here, I've planted my flag,'" he says.

The comedian and presenter was born John McManus, in Perth. He adopted his family nickname "Rove" as a stage name, hoping it would stop his friends from coming to see his early stand-up sets.

Given all those years trading anecdotes with celebrities and forging himself as a familiar screen icon, you'd imagine McManus possesses a wealth of great yarns. And you'd be absolutely right.

Here's what we learned when McManus sat down with Zan Rowe for Double J's Take 5 .

Oh, and be sure to say hi to your mum for him.

He counts Ben Folds as a close friend

"I can't imagine my life without Ben Folds in it. He's been part of some very significant moments [in my life]," McManus says, of the American-born piano man and honorary Australian. (Folds lived in Adelaide for seven years while married to his third wife, Frally Hynes).

McManus fondly remembers seeing Ben Folds Five on tour in Australia in the late 90s ("just extraordinary") after discovering the band's 1997 Australian hit One Angry Dwarf and 200 Solemn Faces.

"Then obviously Ben went solo," says McManus. "We've become very good friends over the years. When I think back to when I was first listening to this song, to think of the connection we would have all these years later is a wonderful thought."

How close? "Nobody knows this…" McManus begins.

Folds composed an original song for McManus's wife, actor Tasma Walton, with a little help from their daughter, Ruby, for her birthday last year.

"It was a significant year," says McManus. "I thought, 'What can we do?' [Ruby] had written a poem for Mother's Day, and I was like, 'How we do top that? Let's write a song!'

"So, she and Ben collaborated on writing this song for my wife's birthday called One Love, and it's beautiful and he was touring at the time and still very helpful doing it."

That's quite the celebrity flex. "I've set the bar very high," he jokes.

"I had my birthday [in January] and I'm like, 'What have we got? Got Bono on the phone?'"

P!nk is another dear friend

McManus and P!nk hit it off when the pop sensation first appeared on Rove Live in the early 00s — and they've been mates ever since.

"She had come through from her previous album where she had broken into the Australian market. [She's] one of those artists where every time she came back into the country, she was a little bit more famous. And I was a little bit more famous," he explains.

"It was this wonderful synchronicity of, as big as she got, she would always come and be part of the show.

"It helped elevate us as well because she always was grateful that when she was starting out, not only we let her perform but let her speak, which not every music act gets to do."

That gratitude developed into something far more meaningful – Alecia "P!nk" Moore has shared several social media posts featuring McManus over the years, including a 2018 tribute calling his family "one of a kinders. These people that I love with my whole heart".

The feeling is mutual .

"She's got a great sense of humour, she's clever, wicked, funny and has a real similar sensibility to Australia, which is why this is one of the biggest markets she's ever had," says McManus.

McManus's favourite P!nk song is her 2008 chart-topper So What. "I have so many fond memories connected with this time and this song," he says.

"I mean, the best hook in music history? That is not for us to argue about now … I think this may have been the first song lyric my daughter ever knew. That 'Ba-da-da-da, da-da' part."

He's also got a warm and fuzzy memory of P!nk's performance at the 2008 ARIA Awards, where she arrived on stage on a ride-on mower, in a nod to the track's music video.

"In fact, I think this was the first year that an American act was allowed to perform at the ARIAs, which was a big, big deal. Testament to her and the love that Australia has for her," says McManus.

Indeed, when McManus and Rowe speak, P!nk is on another blockbuster tour of the country.

P!nk holds the record for the most sold-out shows at Melbourne's Rod Laver Arena, the highest ticket sales ever at the entertainment centres in Sydney (surpassing Kylie Minogue) and Brisbane, and the most performances by an artist at Perth Arena.

"She's such a very dear friend … One of those people who deserves all the fame and popularity … especially here in Australia," says McManus.

The slow death of TV is greatly exaggerated

At its mid-00s height, before internet culture had truly taken hold, it felt like nobody dared miss Rove's weekly variety platter of celebrity interviews, comedy and live music.

Its popularity jump-started the careers of cast members including Peter Helliar, Corrine Grant, Hamish & Andy, and Dave Callan.

Beloved segment What the…?  turned strange oddities sent in by the audience into laughs, long before memes served the same purpose on social media.

"People forget, we were never a ratings juggernaut," says McManus.

Maybe so, but you can find traces of the show's colossal impact on Australian pop culture to this day.

Few ideas better demonstrated how Rove harnessed the interactive power of live television than Flick Your Switch, where viewers turned their lights on and off to show they were watching along.

The concept began with a bid to get then-Prime Minister John Howard involved in the program, McManus explains. They had a crew filming on a ferry passing by Kirribilli House and asked any staff to flick their lights on and off to demonstrate the PM was tuning in at home.

"No one did but behind the harbour, you could see all these apartment building lights are going on and off … So we went, let's make this a [regular] bit," he says.

The weekly segment was a hit but started to get a bit "dangerous" after McManus encouraged one house to put their furniture out on the front lawn.

Cutting back from the commercial break, he realised he had incited a debaucherous street party.

"Everyone's going, 'I know where that place is!' All these people have turned up and the street is full of people who do not live on this street. Cars are coming tearing down the street, flashing their lights and honking their horns," he says.

"That's when we went, 'This has to stop or there's going to be a lawsuit.' But it was that great zeitgeist connection that you just don't get anymore."

These days, television is regarded as an antiquated medium, particularly by younger generations raised on social media.

Why wait for a weekly broadcast when a bevy of streaming platforms provide content in just a few clicks?

However, McManus argues that television still has an edge over other formats.

"I will say it until I'm blue in the face, the one ace up the sleeve that free-to-air, network, terrestrial television has is live. Ask The Matildas, ask the Australian Open," he says.

"People will watch live TV if you do something that doesn't talk down to people. If you acknowledge, yes there's other things on, you can go back to bingeing whatever you want on your streaming service. But just come back and watch me for an hour, let's commune…

"It's a lost art and it was great to have that while we did. It was so much fun."

That time Powderfinger provided a perfect end to hosting Rove

In November 2009, after a decade on air, McManus took to the airwaves for what was to be his final episode . And he couldn't think of a better musical guest to wrap things up with than his favourite band, Powderfinger.

"I hadn't told anyone I was finishing. I'd told our staff, but I hadn't announced it," he explains. "I didn't want a bunch of fuss."

Pre-show, he broke the news backstage to Powderfinger, who were booked to perform All of the Dreamers from their seventh (and what turned out to be final) album, Golden Rule.

McManus recalls telling the band: "Look, I'm announcing it [on air]. I need you guys to know this is going to be my last show. Love the album, it's great, so happy you're on. But my favourite song is Burn Your Name, just so you know.

"They did the song, we finished the show, I said not only goodnight but goodbye. The boys called me up, they did an encore where they sang Burn Your Name and they got me up and I got to sing with them.

"Playing tambourine, singing with Bernard [Fanning], it was one of the greatest moments I've ever had. What a way to finish my run doing the show in Australia.

"To be with my favourite band, singing my favourite song with them, on a stage in a car park out the front of what was the ABC Studios in Melbourne.

"A beautiful moment, and this song always takes me back to that, what could've been a real sad moment for me was so joyous thanks to the boys from Powderfinger."

Rove cherishes the small things … even ants

A children's author, radio host, and beloved screen personality turned media mogul (McManus's production company Roving Enterprises produces long-running panel show The Project as well as the ARIA Awards), McManus has always taken a playful attitude to his work.

Now at age 50, he intends to keep it that way for many years to come.

"At some point I'll step aside and let anyone go past, absolutely. But in the meantime, if they'll let me hang out and play with them, I'm more than happy to do so," he says.

"I'm not that old dog grumbling on the front verandah at all the new puppies coming by. I want to be the one that's running around as best I can until my knees give out."

It speaks to McManus's enduring positivity. On stage and screen, he always looks like he's having the time of his life. You can't fake that over so many decades.

So, is it hard to stay positive?

"There are times when it can be difficult, when you think about the state of the planet and the people who should be helping with that are not. That sort of stuff is bleak and makes me sad," he admits.

"But my wife describes me as 'annoyingly glass half-full'.

"I do try to find the positive where I can, whether that's 'Do what you can while you can' or 'Appreciate what you've got while you've got it.'"

It's an attitude that's all the more resonant coming from someone who has certainly known difficult times.

Most notably, McManus's first wife Belinda Emmett died of breast cancer in 2006, a tragedy that led McManus to take indefinite leave from his show.

"The people in your life that mean something to you? Just let them know!" McManus says.

It's the wholesome mantra of a man who believes in his heart "the world is just an incredible place, it's hard not to just find the joy in the everyday around you".

"I was looking at a group of ants the other day, just going about their business. Ants are incredible!

"There's a lot more joy in the world than I think we're told there is.

"So, if you go and find it and then pass it on, I think it's hard not to then just feel better about things on a day-to-day basis."
