Something from the Venice Boardwalk – You can’t visit Venice Beach without picking up a knick-knack or two from the many hippie hawkers selling their wares. I’d recommend a couple of beaded bracelets or a one-off piece of art, which you can hang up at home to remind you of LA.

A Bottle of Pinot Noir from the San Antonio Winery – California is famous for its wines, but there aren’t many wineries in LA itself. The San Antonio Winery in Downtown LA is one of the few you’ll find in the City of Angels – stop by to pick up a bottle of their fruity Pinot Noir.

Hot Sauce from the Original Farmer’s Market – One of the most distinctive stalls in LA’s Original Farmer’s Market is Light My Fire , which sells hundreds of hot sauces from all around the world. Beverly Boulevard (from Robertson Blvd. to La Brea Ave.)  -- Beverly is L.A.'s premier boulevard for mid-20th-century furnishings. Expensive showrooms line the street, but the shop that started it all is Modernica, 7366 Beverly Blvd. (tel. 323/933-0383; www.modernica.net). You can still find vintage Stickley and Noguchi pieces, but Modernica has become best known for the authentic -- and more affordable -- replicas they offer (Eames storage units are one popular item). Scent Bar, 8327 Beverly Blvd. (tel. 323/782-8300 ), the sleek retail shop from the wildly popular fragrance website www.luckyscent.com, is the place to go for exclusive fragrances from Monyette Paris and Parfums de Nicolai.

British designer and rock royalty Stella McCartney, 8823 Beverly Blvd. (tel. 310/273-7051; www.stellamccartney.com), opened her eponymous digs in an ivy-covered 1920s cottage. Here you'll find the entire collection, from ready-to-wear and fragrance to footwear and handbags. At nearby Erica Courtney, 7465 Beverly Blvd. (tel. 323/938-2373; www.ericacourtney.com), celebs like Julia Roberts, Sandra Bullock, and Eva Longoria Parker are all fans of Courtney's drop-dead gorgeous diamonds. If you complain that they just don't make 'em like they used to . . . well, they do at Re-Mix, 7605 1/2 Beverly Blvd. (btw. Fairfax and La Brea aves.; tel. 323/936-6210; www.remixvintageshoes.com). This shop sells vintage (1920s-1950s) -- as well as brand-new reproductions (as in unworn) -- shoes for women and men (though the selection is smaller for men), such as wingtips, Joan Crawford pumps, and wedge-styles. It's more like a shoe-store museum. A rack of unworn vintage socks all display their original tags and stickers, and the prices are downright reasonable. Celebrity hipsters and hepcats are often spotted here.

Other vintage wares are found at Second Time Around Watch Co., 8763 Rosewood Ave., West Hollywood (tel. 310/271-6615; www.secondtimearoundwatchco.com). The city's best selection of collectible timepieces includes dozens of classic Tiffanys, Cartiers, Piagets, and Rolexes, plus rare pocket watches. Priced for collectors, but a fascinating browse for the Swatch crowd, too.

When it's time to unwind and beautify, hit Ona Spa, 7373 Beverly Blvd. (just east of Martel Ave.); tel. 323/931-4442 for a tension-relieving massage; the attached Privé Salon is one of the city's trendiest salons where celebrity-sightings are common.

La Brea Avenue (north of Wilshire Blvd.) -- This is L.A.'s artiest shopping strip. La Brea is anchored by the giant American Rag, Maison Midialterna-complex and is also home to lots of great urban antiques stores dealing in Art Deco, Arts and Crafts, 1950s modern, and the like. You'll also find vintage clothiers, furniture galleries, and other warehouse-size stores, as well as some of the city's top restaurants, such as Campanile .

Upscale seekers of home decor head to Mortise and Tenon, 446 S. La Brea Ave. (tel. 323/937-7654; www.mortisetenon.com), where handcrafted heavy wood pieces sit next to overstuffed, velvet-upholstered sofas and even vintage steel desks. The best place for a snack is the La Brea Bakery, 624 S. La Brea Ave. (tel. 323/939-6813; www.labreabakery.com), which epicureans know from gourmet markets and the attached Campanile restaurant.

Stuffed to the rafters with hardware and fixtures of the past 100 years, Liz's Antique Hardware, 453 S. La Brea Ave. (tel. 323/939-4403; www.lahardware.com), thoughtfully keeps a canister of wet wipes at the register -- believe us, you'll need one after sifting through bags and crates of doorknobs, latches, finials, and any other home hardware you can imagine. Perfect sets of Bakelite drawer pulls and antique ceramic bathroom fixtures are some of the more intriguing items. Be prepared to browse for hours, whether you're redecorating or not. There's a respectable collection of coordinating trendy clothing for men and women, too.

Robertson Boulevard (btw. Wilshire and Beverly boulevards) -- If you're a fan of celeb magazines like US Weekly, you simply must pay a visit to one of L.A.'s most popular shopping streets. It's common to see the likes of Jessica Simpson, Lindsay Lohan, and Paris Hilton shopping at trend-obsessed boutiques like Kitson, 115 S. Robertson Blvd. (tel. 310/859-2652; www.shopkitson.com), and Lisa Kline, 143 S. Robertson Blvd. (tel. 310/246-0907 ). A splashy Dolce and Gabbana flagship boutique at 147 N. Robertson Blvd. (tel. 310/247-1571; www.dolcegabbana.com)? has the full spectrum of men's and women's clothing and must-have accessories like sunglasses and jewelry. After shopping like a celebrity, dine among them at the Ivy .

Just up the street, one of L.A.'s most unique day spas beckon the tired, the stressed, and the famous. In fact, skin-care specialist Kinara Spa, 656 N. Robertson Blvd. (tel. 310/657-9188; www.kinaraspa.com), lists among its faithful fans Halle Berry, Naomi Watts, and Jennifer Garner.

Rodeo Drive and Beverly Hills's Golden Triangle (btw. Santa Monica Blvd., Wilshire Blvd., and Crescent Dr., Beverly Hills) -- Everyone knows about Rodeo Drive, the city's most famous shopping street. Couture shops from high fashion's old guard are located along these 3 hallowed blocks, along with plenty of newer high-end labels. And there are two examples of the Beverly Hills version of minimalls, albeit more insular and attractive: the Rodeo Collection, 421 N. Rodeo Dr. (www.rodeocollection.net), a contemporary center with towering palms; and 2 Rodeo (www.tworodeo.com), a cobblestoned Italianate piazza at Wilshire Boulevard. The 16-square-block area surrounding Rodeo Drive is known as the Golden Triangle. Shops off Rodeo are generally not as name-conscious as those on the strip (and you might actually be able to afford something), but they're nevertheless plenty upscale. Little Santa Monica Boulevard has a particularly colorful line of specialty stores, and Brighton Way is as young and hip as relatively staid Beverly Hills gets. Parking is a bargain, with seven city-run lots offering 2 hours of free parking.

Rodeo Dr. (tel. 310/858-9216 ); Gucci, 347 N. Rodeo Dr. (tel. 310/278-3451 ); Hermès, 434 N. Rodeo Dr. (tel. 310/278-6440 ); Louis Vuitton, 295 N. Rodeo Dr. (tel. 310/859-0457 ); Polo/Ralph Lauren, 444 N. Rodeo Dr. (tel. 310/281-7200 ); and a three-story Tiffany and Co. that's one of the largest Tiffany stores in the world, 210 N. Rodeo Dr. (tel. 310/273-8880 ). There's also the ultrachic clothiers Dolce and Gabbana, 312 N. Rodeo Dr. (tel. 310/888-8701 ); British plaid palace Burberry, 9560 Wilshire Blvd. (tel. 310/550-4500 ); and NikeTown, on the corner of Wilshire Boulevard and Rodeo Drive (tel. 310/275-9998 ), a behemoth shrine to the reigning athletic-gear king.

Wilshire Boulevard is also home to New York-style department stores (each in spectacular landmark buildings), like Saks Fifth Avenue, 9600 Wilshire Blvd. (tel. 310/275-4211 ); Barneys New York, 9570 Wilshire Blvd. (tel. 310/276-4400 ); and Neiman Marcus, 9700 Wilshire Blvd. (tel. 310/550-5900 ).

When all that walking and gawking tires you out, do what all the Beverly Hills beauties do: Hit a spa. Thibiant Beverly Hills Day Spa, 449 N. Canon Dr. (tel. 310/278-7565; www.thibiantspa.com), has been offering classic treatments since the 1970s. Guys have a place of their own at the high-end barbershop the Shave, 230 S. Beverly Dr. (tel. 310/888-2898; www.theshavebeverlyhills.com). Those looking for eco-friendly pampering can visit Chi Nail Bar and Organic Spa, 9390 Little Santa Monica Blvd. (tel. 310/858-8803; www.chi-nailbar.com), for treatments and facials. You don't need to stay in one of the fabulously luxurious Beverly Hills hotels to get all the pampering services. At the Spa at the Four Seasons , California-flavored treatments use everything from pumpkin to caviar in decadent massages and facials. The Spa at the Peninsula Beverly Hills uses diamonds, emeralds, rubies, and sapphires in some of their signature treatments. At the Beverly Hills Hotel Spa by La Prairie , the facials and massages are some of the most expensive in town, but it's a great reason to spend a decadent day at the "Pink Palace" without having to drop $1,000 a night on a suite.

The Sunset Strip (btw. La Cienega Blvd. and Doheny Dr., West Hollywood) -- The monster-size billboards advertising the latest rock god make it clear this is rock-'n'-roll territory. The Strip is lined with trendy restaurants, industry-oriented hotels, and dozens of shops offering outrageous fashions and stage accessories. One anomaly is Sunset Plaza, an upscale cluster of Georgian-style shops resembling Beverly Hills at its snootiest. You'll find Billy Martin's, 8605 Sunset Blvd. (tel. 310/289-5000; www.billymartin.com), founded by the legendary Yankees manager in 1978. This chic men's Western shop -- complete with fireplace and leather sofa -- stocks hand-forged silver and gold belt buckles, Lucchese and Liberty boots, and stable staples like flannel shirts. Book Soup, 8818 W. Sunset Blvd. (tel. 310/659-3110; www.booksoup.com), has long been one of L.A.'s most celebrated bookshops, selling mainstream and small-press books and hosting book signings and readings.

The Sunset Strip's trendiest hotels have in-house spas and spa services -- like Agua at the Mondrian, 8440 W. Sunset Blvd. (tel. 323/203-1138; www.mondrianhotel.com) -- which offer great added amenities for hotel guests. But to feel like a real superstar on the Strip, go to the "facialist of the stars": Ole Henriksen Face/Body, 8622 W. Sunset Blvd. (tel. 310/854-7700; www.olehenriksen.com/spa), is where stunners like Ashley Judd and Charlize Theron go for glowing skin.

West 3rd Street (btw. Fairfax and Robertson boulevards) -- You can shop until you drop on this trendy strip, anchored on the east end by the Farmers Market and The Grove . Many of Melrose Avenue's shops have relocated here, along with terrific up-and-comers, several cafes, and restaurants. Fun is more the catchword here than funky, and the shops (including the vintage-clothing stores) are a bit more refined than those along Melrose. Traveler's Bookcase, 8375 W. 3rd St. (tel. 323/655-0575; www.travelbooks.com), is one of the best travel bookshops in the West, stocking a huge selection of guidebooks and travel literature, as well as maps and travel accessories.

There's lots more to see along this always-growing street. Refuel at Chado Tea Room, 8422 1/2 W. 3rd St. (tel. 323/655-2056; www.chadotea.com), a temple for tea lovers. Chado is designed with a nod to Paris's renowned Mariage Frères tea purveyor; one wall is lined with nooks whose recognizable brown tins are filled with more than 250 different varieties of tea from around the world. Among the choices are 15 kinds of Darjeeling, Indian teas blended with rose petals, and ceremonial Chinese and Japanese blends. You can also get tea meals here, featuring delightful sandwiches and individual pots of any loose tea in the store.

Hollywood Boulevard (btw. Gower St. and La Brea Ave.) -- One of Los Angeles's most famous streets is, for the most part, a cheesy tourist strip. But along the Walk of Fame, between the T-shirt shops and greasy pizza parlors, you'll find some excellent poster shops, souvenir stores, and Hollywood-memorabilia dealers worth getting out of your car for -- especially if there's a chance of getting your hands on that long-sought-after Ethel Merman autograph or 200 Motels poster.

Some long-standing purveyors of memorabilia include Hollywood Book and Poster Company, 6562 Hollywood Blvd. (tel. 323/465-8764; www.hollywoodbookandposter.com), which has an excellent collection of posters (from about $20 each), strong in horror and exploitation flicks. Photocopies of around 5,000 movie and television scripts are sold for $15 each -- Pulp Fiction is just as good in print, by the way -- and the store carries music posters and photos.

The legendary Fredericks of Hollywood, 6751 Hollywood Blvd. (tel. 323/957-5953; www.fredericks.com), located just a block east of Hollywood and Highland, is worth a stop if you're looking for devilish dainties. The flagship store features lingerie worn by celebrities like Sharon Stone, Julianne Moore, and Halle Berry.

Larchmont Boulevard (btw. Melrose Ave. and 3rd St.) -- Neighbors congregate on this old-fashioned street just east of busy Vine Avenue. As the surrounding Hancock Park homes become increasingly popular with artists and young industry types, the shops and cafes lining Larchmont get more stylish. Sure, chains like Jamba Juice and the Coffee Bean have infiltrated this formerly mom-and-pop terrain, but plenty of unique shopping awaits amid charming elements like diagonal parking, shady trees, and sidewalk bistro tables.

One of L.A.'s landmark independent bookstores is Chevalier's Books, 126 N. Larchmont Blvd. (tel. 323/465-1334 ), a 60-year Larchmont tradition. If your walking shoes are letting you down, stop into Village Footwear, 248 N. Larchmont Blvd. (tel. 323/461-3619 ), which specializes in comfort lines like Josef Siebel. Or even better, stop in for a foot -- or full-body -- massage at Healing Hands Wellness Center, 414 N. Larchmont Blvd. (tel. 323/461-7876; www.healinghandswc.com), which has affordable 1-hour massages starting at $55. An entire afternoon of pampering can be had at Le Petite Retreat Day Spa, 331 N. Larchmont Blvd. (tel. 323/466-1028; www.lprdayspa.com), which offers great packages for couples or a girls' day out.

Melrose Avenue (btw. Fairfax and La Brea aves.)  -- It's showing some wear -- some stretches have become downright ugly -- but this is still one of the most exciting shopping streets in the country for cutting-edge fashions (and some eye-popping people-watching, to boot). Melrose is always an entertaining stroll, dotted with plenty of hip restaurants and funky shops selling the latest in clothes, gifts, jewelry, and accessories that are sure to shock. Where else could you find green patent-leather cowboy boots, a 19th-century pocket watch, an inflatable girlfriend, and glow-in-the-dark condoms on the same block? Here are some highlights:

l.a. Eyeworks, 7407 Melrose Ave. (tel. 323/653-8255; www.laeyeworks.com), revolutionized eyeglass designs from medical supply to stylish accessory, and now their brand is nationwide. Off the Wall Antiques, 7325 Melrose Ave. (tel. 323/930-1185; www.offthewallantiques.com), is filled with neon-flashing, bells-and-whistles kitsch collectibles, from vintage Wurlitzer jukeboxes to life-size fiberglass cows. The L.A. branch of a Bay Area hipster hangout, Wasteland, 7248 Melrose Ave. (tel. 323/653-3028; www.wastelandclothing.com), has an enormous steel-sculpted facade. There's a lot of leather and denim, and some classic vintage -- but mostly funky 1970s-style garb, both vintage and contemporary. An outpost of the edgy Floyd's Barbershops, 7300 Melrose Ave. (tel. 323/965-7600; www.floydsbarbershops.com), keeps the street's style-for-less theme by charging around $21 for men's and $24 for women's cuts. It's like a salon, music store, and Internet cafe rolled into one.

Melrose Heights (btw. La Cienega Blvd. and Fairfax Ave.)  -- This posh section of Melrose, anchored by the venerable favorite Fred Segal, 8100 Melrose Ave. (tel. 323/655-3734; www.fredsegal.com), houses designer boutiques such as Diane Von Furstenberg, 8407 Melrose Ave. (tel. 323/951-1947 ), and Paul Smith, 8221 Melrose Ave. (tel. 323/951-4800 ). L.A. jewelry designer Suzanne Felsen, 8332 Melrose Ave. (tel. 323/653-5400 ), is a celebrity favorite -- she transformed a 1920s Spanish home to house her gold and platinum baubles lined with Peruvian opals and Mandarin garnets. Perennial fashion favorite Marc Jacobs has three stores at 8400, 8409, and 8410 Melrose Ave., featuring ready-to-wear, accessories, menswear, and the less expensive Marc by Marc Jacobs collection.

Santa Monica and the Beaches

Main Street (btw. Pacific St. and Rose Ave., and Santa Monica and Venice boulevards)  -- An excellent street for strolling, Main Street is crammed with a combination of mall standards and upscale, left-of-center individual boutiques. You can also find plenty of casually hip cafes and restaurants. The primary strip connecting Santa Monica and Venice, Main Street has a relaxed, beach-community vibe that sets it apart from similar strips. The stores here straddle the fashion fence between upscale trendy and beach-bum edgy. Highlights include Obsolete, 222 Main St. (near Rose Ave.; tel. 310/399-0024 ), the most hip antiques store I've ever seen. Collectibles range from antique carnival curios to 19th-century anatomical charts from Belgium (you'd be amazed at how much some of that junk in your attic is worth). CP Shades, 2937 Main St. (btw. Ashland and Pier sts.; tel. 310/392-0949; www.cpshades.com), is a San Francisco-based ladies' clothier whose loose and comfy cotton and linen line is carried by many department stores and boutiques. If you're looking for some truly sophisticated, finely crafted eyewear, the friendly Optical Shop of Aspen, 2904 Main St. (btw. Ashland and Pier sts.; tel. 310/392-0633; www.opticalshopofaspen.com), is for you. Ask for frames by cutting-edge L.A. designers Bada and Koh Sakai. For aromatherapy nirvana, it's Cloud's, 2719 Main St. (tel. 310/399-2059 ), where Jill Cloud (happily assisted by her lovely mom) carries the most heavenly scented candles. Then there's Arts and Letters, 2665 Main St. (tel. 310/392-9076 ), a stationery haven that includes invitations by the owner herself, Marilyn Golin. Outdoors types will get lost in 5,600-square-foot Patagonia, 2936 Main St. (tel. 310/314-1776; www.patagonia.com), where climbers, surfers, skiers, and hikers can gear up in the functional, colorful duds that put this environmentally friendly firm on the map.

Montana Avenue (btw. 17th and 7th sts., Santa Monica; www.montanaave.com) -- This breezy stretch of slow-traffic Montana has gotten a lot more pricey than in the late 1970s, when tailors and laundromats ruled the roost, but the specialty shops still outnumber the chains. Look around and you can see upscale moms with strollers and cellphones shopping for designer fashions, country home decor, and gourmet takeout.

Montana is still original enough for residents from across town to make a special trip here, seeking out distinctive shops like Shabby Chic, 1013 Montana Ave. (tel. 310/394-1975; www.shabbychic.com), a much-copied purveyor of slipcovered sofas and flea-market furnishings, while clotheshorses shop for designer wear at minimalist Savannah, 706 Montana Ave. (tel. 310/458-2095 ); ultrahip Jill Roberts, 920 Montana Ave. (tel. 310/260-1966; www.jillroberts.com); and sleekly professional Weathervane, 1209 Montana Ave. (tel. 310/393-5344 ). And don't forget the one-of-a-kind shops such as Sun Precautions, 1601 Montana Ave. (tel. 310/451-5858; www.sunprecautions.com), specializing in 100% UV protection apparel, and the second-largest Kiehl's store outside of New York City, 1516 Montana Ave. (tel. 310/255-0055; www.kiehls.com). Third Street Promenade (3rd St. btw. Wilshire Blvd. and Broadway Ave.; www.downtownsm.com) -- Packed with those ubiquitous corporate chain stores, restaurants, and cafes (gee, another Starbucks), Santa Monica's pedestrians-only section of 3rd Street is one of the most popular shopping areas in the city. The Promenade bustles all day and well into the evening with a seemingly endless assortment of street performers among the shoppers, bored teens, and home-challenged. There are, however, a few shopping gems squeezed between Gap, Abercrombie and Fitch, and Old Navy. You can easily browse for hours at Hennessey and Ingalls, 214 Wilshire Blvd. (tel. 310/458-9074 ), a bookstore devoted to art and architecture. Restoration Hardware, 1221 Third Street Promenade (tel. 310/458-7992 ), is still the retro-current leader for reproduction home furnishings and accessories. Puzzle Zoo, 1413 Third Street Promenade (tel. 310/393-9201 ), was the original location of this now regional chain and you'll find an array of toys and puzzles, as well as many brain-teasing challenges.

Exhale is perfect for those seeking quiet time and relief from the crowds. There's yoga and Core Fusion classes, the Healing Waters sanctuary with eucalyptus steam rooms, relaxing spa services, and the simply titled "Quiet Room" for rejuvenation. Stores stay open late (often until 1 or 2am on the weekends) for the moviegoing crowds, and there's plenty of public parking in six structures along 2nd and 4th streets between Broadway and Wilshire Boulevard.

Santa Monica Place Mall -- This spanking-new outdoor shopping mall (300 block of Colorado Ave., between Third Street Promenade and the Santa Monica Pier; www.santamonicaplace.com) opened on August 6, 2010, in Downtown Santa Monica, offering high-end shopping options in true California form (just 2 blocks away from the beach). The mall is anchored by Bloomingdale's and Nordstrom, and features shops such as Hugo Boss, Burberry, Kitson, and more. Distinguishing attributes of the outdoor shopping haven include its pretty view overlooking Santa Monica Beach, unique event space, fine rooftop dining and bar scene, and modern outdoor fireplace.

Abbot Kinney Boulevard: L.A.'s Antithesis to Rodeo Drive

When you're finally fed up with the Rodeo Drive attitude and megamall conformity, it's time to drive to Venice and stroll the eclectic shops along Abbot Kinney Boulevard. This refreshingly anti-establishment stretch of street has the most diverse array of shops, galleries, and restaurants in Los Angeles. (Locals still cheer that there are no franchises in the neighborhood.) You can easily spend the entire afternoon here poring over vintage clothing, antique furniture, vintage Vespas, local art, and amusing gifts. Or if you're looking for a unique gift, you'll want to try Strange Invisible Perfumes, 1138 Abbot Kinney Blvd. (tel. 310/314-1505; www.siperfumes.com), where they can custom-make a scent to match your musk. Then there's Firefly, 1409 Abbot Kinney Blvd. (tel. 310/450-6288; www.shopfirefly.com), a local favorite. It's that one store you can go into and find everything from great baby gifts, stationery, and books to quirky handbags and cool clothing. DNA Clothing Co., 411 Rose Ave. (tel. 310/399-0341; www.dnaclothing.com), is the mother lode for those in search of the coolest, most current styles for men and women at great prices (stylists and costumers often use DNA as their resource for sitcoms and feature films). You'll find all your major brands as well as their own private-label wear, and fresh stock arrives weekly. Take a break to eat at one of the boulevard's many restaurants, including Joe's (the best California cuisine in L.A.), Primitivo, Axe, Lilly's, Jin's Patisserie, French Market Café, Tasting Kitchen Gjelina, and, of course, Hal's Bar and Grill, with its live jazz music. Heck, there are even 2 hours of free street parking.

Silver Lake and Los Feliz

Located at the eastern end of Hollywood and technically part of Los Angeles, these two communities have been rising steadily on the hipness meter. Silver Lake, named for the man-made Silver Lake Reservoir at its center, is a bohemian community of artists and ethnic families that's popular for nightclubbing and barhopping. Los Feliz is northwest of Silver Lake, centered on Vermont and Hillhurst avenues between Sunset and Los Feliz boulevards; it's slightly tamer and filled with 1920s and 1930s buildings. You'll find tons of unique businesses of all sorts, including artsy boutiques, music stores, and furniture dealers.

Because so many alternative bands call Silver Lake home, it's not surprising to find cutting-edge music stores around every corner. A neighborhood mainstay with lots of used CDs, collectible disks, and new releases is Rockaway Records, 2395 Glendale Blvd. (south of Silver Lake Blvd.; tel. 323/664-3232; www.rockaway.com).

Vintage clothing is another big draw in these parts. The most reliable yet eclectic selections to browse through are at Ozzie Dots, 4637 Hollywood Blvd. (west of Hillhurst Ave.; tel. 323/663-2867; www.ozziedots.com); Pull My Daisy, 3908 Sunset Blvd. (at Griffith Park Blvd.; tel. 323/663-0608 ); and Squaresville, 1800 N. Vermont Ave. (south of Franklin Ave.; tel. 323/669-8464 ).

Rubbish, 1627 Silver Lake Blvd. (north of Sunset Blvd.; tel. 323/661-5575; www.rubbishinteriors.com), specializes in vintage furnishings. One not-to-be-missed highlight is the wacky and eclectic Soap Plant/Wacko/La Luz de Jesus Art Gallery, 4633 Hollywood Blvd. (west of Hillhurst Ave.; tel. 323/663-0122; www.soapplant.com), a three-in-one business with candles, art books, erotic toys, soap and bathing items, and a large selection of lava lamps. Local fixture Y-Que, 1770 N. Vermont Ave. (tel. 323/664-0021; www.yque.com), almost defies description, selling a variety of stuff ranging from a knockoff Austin Powers penis pump to psychedelic lava lamps to L.A. neighborhood T-shirts.

With a focus on small-production, high-quality, affordable wine from around the world, and a large selection of microbrew beer and sake, Silverlake Wine, 2395 Glendale Blvd. (tel. 323/662-9024; www.silverlakewine.com), is a great place to visit. Get your friends together and check out any one of their weekly tastings: Sunday at 3pm, Blue Monday from 5 to 9pm, and Thursday Night Flights from 5 to 9pm (call ahead to confirm times). Located in Sunset Junction (at the southeast corner of Sanborn Ave. and Sunset Blvd.), the Cheese Store of Silverlake, 3926-28 W. Sunset Blvd. (tel. 323/644-7511; www.cheesestoresl.com), sells fine cheeses, wines, and gourmet products such as Revival confections, Latini pastas, Agrumato flavored oils, and McQuade's chutneys. Next door is the West Coast's first Intelligentsia Coffee and Tea, 3922 W. Sunset Blvd. (tel. 323/663-6173; www.intelligentsiacoffee.com), where Mac-using hipsters convene for artfully poured lattes and Chemex-brewed, single-origin coffee.

Since the late lamented Bullock's department store closed in 1993 (its Art Deco masterpiece salons were rescued to house the Southwestern Law School's library), Downtown has become less of a shopping destination than ever. Although many of the once-splendid streets are lined with cut-rate luggage and electronics stores, shopping here can be a rewarding -- albeit gritty -- experience for the adventuresome.

Savvy Angelenos still go for bargains in the garment and fabric districts; florists and bargain hunters arrive before dawn at the vast Los Angeles Flower District, 766 Wall St. (btw. E. 8th and E. 7th sts.; tel. 213/622-1966; www.laflowerdistrict.com), for the city's best selection of fresh blooms; and families of all ethnicities stroll the Grand Central Market , 317 S. Broadway (btw. 3rd and 4th sts.; tel. 213/624-2378; www.grandcentralsquare.com). Opened in 1917, this bustling market has watched the face of Downtown L.A. change while changing little. Today its sawdust-covered aisles serve Latino families, enterprising restaurateurs, and cooks in search of unusual ingredients -- stuffed goat heads, mole, plantains, deep-fried smelt, Mexican cane alcohol -- and bargain-priced produce. On weekends you'll be greeted by a mariachi band at the Hill Street entrance, near my favorite market feature, the fruit-juice counter, which dispenses 20 fresh varieties from wall spigots and blends the tastiest, healthiest "shakes" in town. Farther into the market, you'll find produce and prepared foods, spice vendors who seem straight out of a Turkish bazaar, and a grain-and-bean seller who'll scoop out dozens of exotic rices and dried legumes. It's open 9am to 6pm daily.

Another of my favorite Downtown shopping zones is Olvera Street  (tel. 213/680-2525; www.olvera-street.com), a lively brick pedestrian lane near Union Station that's been lined with stalls selling Mexican wares since the 1930s. Everything that's sold south of the border is available here, including custom leather accessories, huarache sandals, maracas, and -- but of course -- freshly baked churros. On weekends you're bound to see strolling bolero musicians, mariachis, folk dancers, and performances by Aztec Indians. It's open daily from 10am to about 8pm.

If you're looking to find the best shopping deals in handbags, luggage, shoes, costume jewelry, and trendy fashions, then find a parking meter or park in one of the parking structures from Olympic Boulevard to 12th Street and explore Santee Alley, located in the alley between Santee Street and Maple Avenue. Often referred to as the heart of the fashion district, this is where you'll find everything you've ever wanted at bargain prices. Go early on Saturday mornings if you want to blend in with the locals.

Okay, so you have to wake up a little early to experience the Southern California Flower Market, 755 Wall St., between 7th and 8th streets (tel. 213/627-2482; www.laflowerdistrict.com), but if you do it right -- wear comfortable shoes, bring cash, and pick up a cup o' joe -- you'll find walking through the myriad of flower stalls a very tranquil experience. Besides the usual buds and stems that you see in Sunset Magazine, you'll be surprised to find tropicals such as torch ginger, protea, and bird of paradise. You can purchase flowers by the bundles at amazingly low prices.

Downtown Deals -- At the base of the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising's Downtown campus, you'll find the FIDM Scholarship Store, where donated new merchandise is sold at bargain prices. All sales go toward scholarships for FIDM students, so you can shop with the karmic awareness that you're helping the fashion industry's next generation of designers with their tuition. It's located at 919 S. Grand Ave., at W. 9th Street (tel. 213/624-1200; www.fidm.edu).

Gr8 Finds in West L.A.'s J-Town

What started off as a magazine has spawned two of L.A.'s most talked-about stores -- Giant Robot, 2015 Sawtelle Blvd. (tel. 310/478-1819 ), and GR2, 2062 Sawtelle Blvd. (tel. 310/445-9276 ) -- and gr/eats restaurant, 2050 Sawtelle Blvd. (tel. 310/478-3242; www.gr-eats.com). Located across the street from each other in West L.A.'s Japantown (at Sawtelle and Olympic boulevards), both shops specialize in a wide range of Asian-American pop-culture items, including T-shirts, books, music, stationery, toys, art, and accessories (check out the Takashi Murakami pins ). Several other cool shops and restaurants occupy this 1 1/2-block stretch as well. One of my favorite stores is Happy Six, 2115 Sawtelle Blvd. (tel. 310/479-5363 ), which sells playful apparel and accessories for men and women that are reminiscent of Hello Kitty on acid. If you're hungry, my favorites along Sawtelle are Manpuku, 2125 Sawtelle Blvd. (tel. 310/473-0580; www.manpuku.us); Sawtelle Kitchen, 2024 Sawtelle Blvd. (tel. 310/473-2222; www.sawtellekitchen.com); and Hurry Curry of Tokyo, 2131 Sawtelle Blvd. (tel. 310/473-1640; www.hurrycurryoftokyo.com). Or you can pop into Nijiya Market, 2130 Sawtelle Blvd. (tel. 310/575-3300; www.nijiya.com), and grab a bento (Japanese boxed lunch) to go.

The San Fernando Valley

Studio City (Ventura Blvd. btw. Laurel Canyon Blvd. and Fulton Ave.) -- Long beloved by Valley residents, Studio City is where you'll find small boutiques and antiques stores, quirky little businesses (many dating from the 1940s and 1950s), and less congested branches of popular chains like Gap, Pier 1 Imports, and Blockbuster. Melanie Shatner, daughter of William, stocks Marc Jacobs and Joie at her chic boutique Dari, 12184 Ventura Blvd. (tel. 818/762-3274 ). Fashionistas flock to TV personality Lisa Rinna's Belle Gray, 13812 Ventura Blvd. (tel. 818/789-4021; www.bellegray.com). Actress Kirsten Dunst's mother has a day spa, Belle Visage, 13207 Ventura Blvd. (tel. 818/907-0502; www.bellevisage.com), that caters to the young and the beautiful -- or at least those in search of youth and beauty. Parking is a cinch on the street except during holiday season, when stores team up to decorate these blocks and often observe extended evening hours. The 4 blocks of Ventura Boulevard between Laurel Canyon Boulevard and Whitsett Avenue are the most concentrated.

Pasadena and Environs

Compared to L.A.'s behemoth shopping malls, the streets of pretty, compact Pasadena are a breeze to stroll. As a general rule, stores are open daily from about 10am, and while some close at the standard 5 or 6pm, many stay open until 8 or 9pm to accommodate the before- and after-dinner/movie crowd.

Old Pasadena -- Dating back to the 1880s, the 22-block-long Old Pasadena district (centered on the intersection of Colorado Blvd. and Fair Oaks Ave.; www.oldpasadena.com) offers some of the best shopping in L.A. -- if it retains the mom-and-pop businesses currently being pushed out by the likes of Banana Republic and Crate and Barrel. Going through its own sort of renaissance, more upscale shopping has been added to the strip, including a Tiffany and Co., 68 W. Colorado Blvd. (tel. 626/793-7424; www.tiffany.com), which has become somewhat of an attraction more than a store, and the new (and hugely popular) H&M fashion store, 60 W. Colorado Blvd. (tel. 626/793-8974; www.hm.com), which now is an anchor to the neighborhood. As you move eastward, the mix of businesses begins to include more eclectic shops and galleries commingling with dusty, pre-yuppie relics, but it's a good segue between Old Pasadena and the Paseo Colorado mall.

Travelers also seem to find something they need at Distant Lands Bookstore and Outfitters, 20 S. Raymond Ave. (tel. 800/310-3220 or 626/449-3220; www.distantlands.com), a pair of related stores. The bookstore has a terrific selection of maps, guides, and travel-related literature, while the outfitter two doors away offers everything from luggage and pith helmets to space-saving travel accessories.

Other Pasadena Shopping -- In addition to Old Pasadena, there are numerous good hunting grounds in the surrounding area. Antiques hounds might want to head to the Green Street Antique Row, 985-1005 E. Green St. (east of Lake Ave.), or the Pasadena Antique Center, on South Fair Oaks Boulevard (south of Del Mar Blvd.). Each has a rich concentration of collectibles that can captivate for hours.

You never know what you might find at the Rose Bowl Flea Market , at the Rose Bowl, 1001 Rose Bowl Dr., Pasadena (tel. 323/560-SHOW [560-7469]; www.rgcshows.com). The horseshoe-shaped Rose Bowl, built in 1922, is one of the world's most famous stadiums, home to UCLA's Bruins, the annual Rose Bowl Game, and an occasional Super Bowl. California's largest monthly swap meet, held here on the second Sunday of every month from 9am to 3pm rain or shine, is a favorite of Los Angeles antiques hounds (who know to arrive as early as 7am for the best finds). Antique furnishings, clothing, jewelry, and other collectibles are assembled in the parking area to the left of the entrance, while the rest of the flea market surrounds the exterior of the Bowl. Expect everything from used surfboards and car stereos to one-of-a-kind lawn statuary and bargain athletic shoes. Admission is $8 after 9am. (Early-bird admission is $10 at 8am, $15 at 7am and $20 from 5-7am.) Free admission for kids 11 and under.

Anglophiles will enjoy Rose Tree Cottage, 801 S. Pasadena Ave. (tel. 626/793-3337; www.rosetreecottage.com), and its charming array of all things British. This cluster of historic Tudor cottages surrounded by traditional English gardens holds three gift shops and a tearoom, where a superb $33 high tea is served thrice daily among the knickknacks (and supervised by the resident cat, Miss Moffett). In addition to imported teas, linens, and silver trinkets, Rose Tree Cottage sells English delicacies like steak-and-kidney pies, hot cross buns, and shortbread. It's also the local representative of the British Tourist Authority and offers a comprehensive array of travel publications.

This Sunday flea market takes place in Fairfax High School and money raised each week at the market is donated to the school. Vendors at Melrose Trading Mail sell everything from vintage homeware, antiques, collectables, and art to handmade, eco-friendly, and recycled items. You’ll have to pay a small admission fee, but it’s used to fund school trips, sports equipment, and the upkeep of the school.

Venice Beach :  The Venice Beach Boardwalk is a great place to shop for inexpensive souvenirs, cheap sunglasses and original arts and crafts by local artisans. Best bargain: 3 souvenir T-shirts for $10. The Fashion District   in Downtown LA :  Over 1000 outlets of local garment manufacturers and top designers cover 100 blocks of Downtown Los Angeles, divided into themed blocks from men's casual to ladies' formals.

Retro Row , 4th Street in Long Beach : 4th Street between Cherry and Junipero is where costume designers shop for vintage clothing,

The Grove at the LA Farmers Market is a crossover between mid-range and high-end shopping with good celebrity spotting potential.

West 3rd Street  is a six-block shopping district between the Farmers Market at 3rd and Fairfax and the Beverly Center at 3rd and La Cienega. It consists of some of the trendiest and most style-forward shops in LA, but it's not totally out of range of most shoppers. Abbott-Kinney Blvd in Venice is a collection of independent boutique shops that originally reflected more of the funkiness of Venice but has seen some gentrification in recent years. It's still home to some of the most original shops in LA. Santa Monica Place used to be an indoor shopping mall with some uniquely Santa Monica shops. After a 2010 makeover, it is now an outdoor shopping center with big name stores and trendy rooftop restaurants. What they did right was incorporate local designer wares and art at Bloomingdale's and Nordstrom. Third Street Promenade , Santa Monica: The promenade is a three-block pedestrian zone of shops and restaurants. Main Street Santa Monica : This street has several blocks of trendy shops, galleries, and restaurants with a bit of British influence. Hollywood & Highland : Upscale boutiques and mall staples are set in an outdoor Hollywood backdrop modeled after a movie set. Old Pasadena :  You'll find a combination of chain stores and local boutiques in Pasadena's historic district.

Americana at Brand : From the same company as the Grove, the Americana at Brand in Glendale is mostly mid-range shops with a few more upscale offerings in a nicely designed outdoor setting.

Rodeo Drive : These are two of the most exclusive blocks on the planet. Top designer stores offer $10 for an empty store bag. (Tip: some of these shops sell the same merchandise for less at the Beverly Center and other upscale malls.) Midtown/ West Hollywood , Third Street, Robertson, Beverly and Melrose: One-of-a-kind upscale boutiques draw celeb shoppers. Pacific Design Center at Melrose and San Vicente is the center of the West Hollywood Design District , a Mecca for interior designers. There is also the short Melrose Place between La Cienega and Melrose Ave. Beverly Center is an upscale indoor mall with over 100 shops, including common mall staples and high-end designers in the Fairfax District of Los Angeles bordering Beverly Hills and West Hollywood.

Sunset Plaza is a block of high-end designer shops, boutiques and restaurants on the Sunset Strip in West Hollywood, popular with the A-list.

You'll also get to know the very people who are dedicated to revitalizing the area to its former glory, one handmade luxury good at a time.

1.  Poketo

This husband-and-wife-owned shop and gallery space (named for her grandmother's mispronunciation of "pocket") strives to bring art into customers' everyday lives. Find all sorts of eclectic goods, from the artist-designed vinyl wallets to colorful socks and tees. Plus, the store occasionally hosts art shows and musical performances, making it a great place to get to know the Arts District's eclectic, creative community.

2.  The Last Bookstore

If the Last Bookstore were really our last bookstore, we'd be in good shape. Currently housed in what used to be an old bank building (complete with marble columns and giant doors), the store first began in a loft apartment and has since expanded to include a record shop, coffee bar and "Labyrinth" mezzanine level solely dedicated to $1 books. It's now the largest independent bookstore in Southern California. You can sell or trade old books here, pick up new ones, grab a record or a cup of joe and attend a myriad of events including readings, book signings, writer's groups, open mic nights and concerts. It's a true community hot spot, bringing like-minded literary folks together to create, inspire and share in an open and welcoming space.

3.  Alchemy Works

This super-hip outpost of home goods, art, skincare, clothing and accessories from husband-wife team Raan and Lindsay Parton (he’s the creative director of the highly curated neighboring men’s emporium Apolis: Common Gallery) is a welcome addition to Downtown’s Arts District. The bustling neighborhood is a bastion of wares for the aesthetically minded, including the shop’s own navy blue 1959 Fiat Abarth Spyder—the only of its kind in the US. Be on the lookout for Rodin’s much-loved Olio Lusso ($150) as well as items from brands like The Hill-Side and Gitman Vintage. Grab coffee from Blacktop next door before you peruse, and be on the lookout for the Guerilla Tacos truck that sometimes parks outside.

4.  Tanner Goods

This shop boasts beautiful, handmade leather goods from Portland Oregon, displayed in a sizeable space amidst a small (but great) selection of clothing, a spattering of ceramics, coffee table books and accessories that may or may not be for sale, like a 10-speed bike suspended from the ceiling and light fixtures we can't stop dreaming about. Tanner Goods is all about the process, and their staff is super knowledgeable about each piece's provenance and properties. The shop is a great place to find gifts for men, or anyone outdoorsy with a weakness for well-crafted goods that'll last 'til they're well-worn.

5.  Fifth Floor

Half art gallery, half boutique, this hybrid design store stocks merchandise from local artists on the first floor and runs a rotating exhibition on the second. Walking through the gallery space, owner Robert Apodaca's background in architecture is prevalent through his eye for contemporary and edgy art and design pieces. The space is stocked with jewelry, accessories, furniture, home wares and unique handmade objects. Browse for exclusive items made for Fifth Floor, such as a tree stump cat scratcher, Sewn Machine throw pillows and a handmade Windsor chair.

6.  Hammer and Spear

The Arts District's shopping landscape got more rustically rugged with the addition of Hammer and Spear. A vintage compilation of leather, wool and wood, Hammer and Spear is a place that feels half hunting lodge, half Southern estate sale—and all completely original. HGTV’s Design on a Dime host Kristen Cunningham and her husband Scott Jarrell have curated finds from their own travels and also support local artists as well as those from their home state of West Virginia. And given that they are actually on site most of the time, they can give you a history of the product—perfect for the conversation that each piece will be starting.

7.  Rafu Bassun

It seems as though there’s enough dishware in this gift shop to stock all the kitchens in LA—and it’s been serving shoppers in Little Tokyo since 1958. Walk the long first aisle for gorgeous sake sets, bowls and teacups, then consider the selection of Zojirushi products toward the back—every household should have a rice cooker or hot pot, right? Don’t forget to sift through their collection of chopsticks, origami paper, imported teas and candies. There’s also an assortment of fancy vases in the front room, perfect for gifts.

8.  Ooga Booga

Tastemaker Wendy Yao packs her boutique with books, zines, graphic novels, mixtapes, art and other treasures you're not likely to find elsewhere in LA. The clothing selection includes cult brands like Opening Ceremony, Bless and Slow and Steady Wins the Race (most of which is also available at Ooga Booga's online shop). Be sure to follow the stairs up to the second floor when you arrive—the tiny shop is hidden enough to prevent just any old shmo from stumbling in off the street.

9.  Raggedy Threads

One step inside Raggedy Threads and you’ll feel as if you’ve been transported to Grandpa’s attic—assuming your Grandpa was a stylish old chap. The secondhand shop is teeming with fashions and memorabilia from decades past, and the vintage treasures are anything but raggedy. Distressed leather boots with brass clamps shine under the store lights, 1940s Beacon blankets are spotlessly clean and men and women’s apparel from every 20th century decade are ironed and hung tidily, ready for you to flip through. Owner Jaime Wong mans the counter herself when she’s not traveling the country on buying trips, picking out items from dealers and conventions across the country. Her more prized finds? A collection of plaid and jean-clad Buddy Lee dolls that are on display only, as Wong can’t bare to part with them.

10.  The Well

As artsy as Downtown LA comes, The Well was established in 2010 as a clothing boutique/hair salon/event space with the mission of uniting LA's music, design and fashion scenes. The sprawling space has hosted everything from funky DJ sets and warehouse sales to pop-up shops and parties, and always has forward-facing fashion for sale, if you're brave enough.

There is never a dull moment on Hollywood Boulevard and the same goes for the shopping at Hollywood & Highland. Boasting iconic tourist attractions such as the TCL Chinese Theatre, the Dolby Theatre and the Walk of Fame, this mall offers just as much gravy in its range of shops.

This deceptively large mall carries all the usual suspects – Apple, Bloomingdale’s, Macy’s – but it’s really its additional facilities that draw in the crowds. With a fabulous food court, a children’s play area and countless spas and salons, you’ll be unaware of how much time you’ve actually spent in the mall. It’s also worth noting there’s not one, but two parking decks and both are free, so you can spend more money on actual shopping.

Will the video of Princess Kate out shopping put the royal rumors to an end?

LONDON — A shopping trip may never have received such scrutiny.

After more than a week of speculation and rumors about the whereabouts and health of Kate, the Princess of Wales, a grainy video emerged appearing to show her out with her husband, Prince William .

That might have been the end of the story in a different era. Not so in the age of internet-fueled conspiracy theories and nosediving trust in public institutions: a time when anything is forgeable and therefore everything, especially anything put out by Britain’s royal family these past few weeks, remains open to questions.

The video, published by the British tabloid The Sun , shows a man in a baseball cap and a jacket, accompanied by a woman with brown hair wearing a hooded sweater and sports leggings. The newspaper said it was recorded at Windsor Farm Shop, near the couple’s home to the west of London, and it splashed the story on its front page alongside the headline, “Great to see you again, Kate!"

Britain’s most-read paper, The Daily Mail, summarized the generally sympathetic tone of the country’s news media, calling it the “image the world has been waiting to see.”

The gossip website TMZ, which also published the video, said it had “delved into the metadata” and had “no doubt” that it was a “legitimate video.”

Kensington Palace did not immediately respond to a request for a response to the video. But it would have known that someone at this very public place would most likely spot them, NBC News royal commentator Daisy McAndrew said Tuesday on “TODAY.”

“This was a genuine member of the public who happened to see Kate and William at this farm shop,” McAndrew said. “But was it setup, in that they knew perfectly well that somebody would take a photograph of them? Yes, I think we can assume that was the case.”

McAndrew said she thought there was a strong chance Kate will make her official return to the public eye on Easter Sunday.

In the meantime, the video has not been enough to convince some of the frenzied masses on social media who have become enthralled by the saga and whose engagement with the royal rumor mill had reached fever pitch just as the video emerged.

Whether the palace or the rest of the public agrees, it is still a topic of intense conversation, with related search terms among the trending topics on multiple platforms.

“That ain’t Kate….,” said TV producer Andy Cohen, who has 2.2 million followers on X.

At the center of all this is a woman who, according to the palace, is recovering from major abdominal surgery and has always been expected to be out of action until at least the end of this month.

“Once we do have answers about what has gone on with the Princess of Wales these past few months, people are going to feel sincerely guilty about their behavior,” Kinsey Schofield, host of the “To Di For Daily” royal podcast, told Britain’s Times Radio on Tuesday.

Polling for Sky News, NBC News’ British partner, suggested that more than half of the population had seen the conspiracy theories but that trust in the royals had not been significantly dented.

At the same time, even many sober royal experts say there have been a slew of decisions by the palace that at best do not help the royal cause with the public, providing fodder for observers seeking to uncover some grand conspiracy.

The picture agency Getty, one of those that pulled Kate’s family photo last week, added an editor’s note Tuesday to another royal image taken by the princess, saying her photo of the late Queen Elizabeth II with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren from 2022 had been “digitally enhanced at source.”

NBC News analysis of the image suggested it had been subjected to Photoshop errors when the editor tried to “clone” one area of the image and copy it onto another. 

The photo of Kate and her children may be the biggest controversy over a royal image since 1539, when King Henry VIII sent his court artist, Hans Holbein, to paint Anne of Cleaves so he could consider her for marriage, according to royal biographer and historian Sarah Gristwood.

On meeting Anne, Henry is said to have remarked that the painting was a poor likeness, and their marriage the next year was annulled within months.

While overall levels of trust may not have been dented, it seems for some people the debacle has marked something of an open season for royal rumors.

Many have asked: Why not just end the chatter by releasing a short video explanation or a statement squaring some of the recent issues? The answer is likely to lie in the royals’ stubbornness and their animosity toward the news media, according to expert observers such as Gristwood.

“I can accept that there are reasons why we’re all diving so hastily into this rabbit hole,” said Gristwood, a royal biographer and historian whose books include “The Tudors in Love.” But “we also have to remember Prince William’s determination, like that of his brother, to protect his wife and family and not be bullied by the press.”

Given what we know about William’s views on the media, she said, the royals most likely do not want to be “bullied into doing what they’d never planned to do, forcing Kate to go out in public before she expected to, and being forced to give updates on her health that they always said they wouldn’t do.”

Princess Kate seen out on weekend shopping trip

After days of rampant speculation online the followed an  altered family photo  shared by the royal family , Catherine, the Princess of Wales, was reportedly seen shopping over the weekend — an outing that was captured on video, according to NBC News .

Until now, Kate hasn't been seen publicly since Kensington Palace announced in January that she'd had planned abdominal surgery. She was seen shopping Saturday not far from her home in Windsor, according to The Sun and TMZ, which  published images o f   the outing.

Kensington Palace declined to comment, and a phone call to the Royal Farms Windsor Farm Shop seeking confirmation of the royal couple’s outing there was not answered late Monday.

Questions have been swirling around the princess, one of the British royal family's highest-profile members, since the January statement about her health, which did not elaborate on the reasons for the procedure and added that she would be "unlikely to return to public duties until after Easter."

The noise grew louder this month after a photo of Kate and her three children was shared on the royal family's social media and  had been manipulated . Global news organizations issued a "kill notice" for the doctored image.

On March 11, the princess appeared to take responsibility for altering the photo.

Tour architectural wonders, discover Soviet history, and savor local flavors in this gold-domed city.

Moscow is a city where the past and the future live side by side. Here you will find everything from medieval fortresses and Soviet monoliths to glass skyscrapers and innovation centers. Moscow’s spirit mirrors its uncontainable size. Muscovites, the city’s approximately 12 million residents, are always on the run, so be prepared to keep pace with their energy. Here’s how to make the most of three days in Moscow .

Day 1: Mosaics and metro stations

9 a.m. Navigate the labyrinth of the Moscow metro , a living, breathing work of art crisscrossing the metropolis. Expect marble arches and pillars, gilded mosaics, and sparkling chandeliers. Each station is unique. Some of the most beautiful stations are Kievskaya and Prospekt Mira (brown line); Mayakovskaya (dark green line); and Ploschad Revolutsii , Arbatskaya and Elektrozavodskaya (dark blue line). Getting lost on the metro is a rite of passage. However, ahead of the 2018 World Cup, most trains introduced route maps and announcements in English to make navigation easier for outsiders.

Three stations take you to Red Square, but Ploschad Revolutsii is ideal. Its platforms have numerous bronze statues of soldiers with their dogs. Locals often stop by to rub the dogs’ noses as they make a wish. ( See pictures of Moscow’s surprisingly elegant subway stations. )

9:45 a.m. Head to the iconic Red Square to see the red-bricked towers and the eastern wall of the Moscow Kremlin, Vladimir Lenin’s mausoleum, the State Historical Museum , and the psychedelically colorful domes of the St. Basil’s Cathedral . Queue early outside Lenin’s mausoleum for a spooky date with the man behind the Russian Revolution, who has rested in this tomb, preserved in chemicals, for almost 100 years .

The postcard-perfect St. Basil’s Cathedral was built in the 16th century to commemorate Tsar Ivan the Terrible’s victory over the Khanate of Kazan and the transformation of Moscow into a major center of power. Drop in for a quick visit or keep walking south towards the Moskva River and the Bolshoi Moskvaretskii Bridge for spectacular views of the Kremlin and the Red Square.

Another structure that will catch your eye is the golden-domed Cathedral of Christ the Savior , just southwest of the Kremlin. Unlike St. Basil’s, this Cathedral did not survive the communist persecution of religion. The original was destroyed in 1931 and the area was converted to an open-air swimming pool, the largest in the world. The fall of communism brought with it religious freedom and the Cathedral was rebuilt in the 1990s. If you turn around, you will see one of the “Seven Sisters,” the Stalinist monoliths that command Moscow’s skyline .

11:45 a.m. Head back towards the Red Square for a shopping trip at GUM (pronounced goom ), the largest department store in Russia. Much like Russia, the store has undergone many changes. Built in imperial times as a massive trading center, GUM’s Soviet-era badge of honor was being relatively better stocked than other stores. Today, it’s a glittering mall that houses Hermès and Louis Vuitton. Even if you don’t shop, the long, arched galleries and concave glass roof make it an architectural delight. Next, make your way to the third floor for Stolovaya No. 57 (Canteen No. 57), a Soviet-style restaurant with local dishes and a laid-back vibe. Try the syrniki (roughly translated as cheesecakes), buckwheat with mushroom sauce, or meat cutlets.

2 p.m. The Moscow Kremlin , the seat of the Russian Government, was built in the 15th century and houses cathedrals, museums, and unique objects from imperial Russia. Start with the Armory Chamber , a treasure trove of Fabergé eggs, imperial dresses, and gifts presented to the Tsars. Don’t miss the Diamond Fund inside the Armory where guests can marvel at the crown of Tsarina Catherine the Great.

The Bolshoi Theatre hosts ballet and opera performances, including classics like Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake.

Take a stroll around Cathedral Square to admire the golden domes that mushroom from Orthodox cathedrals. Look out for the 19-foot-high bronze Tsar Bell for great photo ops. The nearby Tsar Cannon is also worth a look. Wrap up in the Kremlin Garden and see if you can spot Cosmos, the lone oak tree that was planted by Yuri Gagarin, the first man in space, two days after his extraordinary flight in April 1961 . 7 p.m. Finish your day with a ballet or opera performance at Bolshoi Theatre , one of the strongholds of Russian theatrical excellence since the 19th century. If you are lucky, you might be able to catch Tchaikovsky’s masterpiece Swan Lake on the stage where it premiered in 1877. Performances sell out so book in advance, and arrive early to enjoy the neoclassical building. Russians take theater seriously so wear your best outfit.

Day 2: Fine art and food

10 a.m. The extraordinary entrance to Tretyakov Gallery welcomes guests to Moscow’s most definitive collection of fine arts spanning almost a millennium. You can explore 12th-century icons and mosaics or get lost in the brushstrokes of 19th- and 20th-century Russian heavyweights such as Ivan Shishkin and Ilya Repin. The New Tretyakov wing showcases artists from the Soviet period.

1 p.m. Soak up some summer sun in one of Moscow’s most dynamic open spaces: Park Gorky , a hipster paradise that underwent a major makeover from a Soviet relic to the center of cultural life. Grab some food on the go or sit down for a meal at Grill Bar Zharovnya or La Boule . Wander through the open-air sculpture museum, Muzeon , the home of countless statues and symbols from the Soviet times. Muzeon runs next to the Moscow River and offers a great view of the almost 322-foot-high statue of Tsar Peter the Great.

7 p.m. One place you must dine in Moscow is White Rabbit . The restaurant, which has been featured among the top 50 in the world, owes its success to chef Vladimir Mukhin, whose culinary prowess was featured on Netflix’s Chef’s Table . White Rabbit serves Russian food with innovative twists; think sea urchin caviar and beetroot hummus. Quite fittingly, there is also rabbit on the menu. Did we mention the restaurant’s glass dome offers spectacular views of Moscow City?

Day 3: Markets and museums

10 a.m. If the Moscow Kremlin is stately, then the colorful Izmailovo Kremlin cultural center has a bit of a Disneyland feel to it. Built in 2007, Izmailovo is a great place for a stroll before bargain-hunting at Vernisazh , a flea market with stalls selling Cold War memorabilia. You will find stamps, banknotes, pins, propaganda posters, and even steel mugs from Soviet times. Score great deals on matryoshkas , Russian nesting dolls; khokhloma , hand-painted wooden handicrafts; and Baltic amber jewelry. Don’t miss contemporary twists on traditional Russian gifts, such as nesting dolls of modern politicians and music boxes shaped like Orthodox cathedrals. For a market of its popularity, Vernisazh prices are a steal and you can haggle without hesitation. Saturdays and Sundays are the best days to visit.

Russian nesting dolls make the perfect souvenir, and are sold throughout Moscow, including at the Vernisazh flea market.

1 p.m. By now, you have probably got the sense that there is more to see in Moscow than time to see it. So pick what you crave most. Want more of Orthodox churches? Head to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Novodevichy Convent , which was once used by the women of the Tsar’s family. Still looking for souvenirs and gifts? Make your way to Stari Arbat (Old Arbat), a historical cobblestone street of shops and restaurants. Want to delve deeper into Russian history? Visit the State Historical Museum on the Red Square. A Cold War buff? The Bunker 42 Museum located 18 floors below Taganskaya metro was a strategic command center and an anti-nuclear shelter. A fan of Russian literature? Check out the Gogol House and the Bulgakov Museum . Want another serving of art? Try the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts or the Garage Museum .

8 p.m. End your stay in Moscow with a nice meal. Café Pushkin offers antique interiors, delicious Russian dishes, and five-star service. Even if you don’t eat here, grab a cup of the Pushkin chai, a signature Earl Grey blend with citrusy overtones. For casual fare, go to Varenichnaya (multiple locations), which has an extensive menu of Russian dishes and decor straight out of a Soviet poster. Mari Vanna (multiple locations) is another choice Russian chain.

Moscow is also a great place to try the food from other Soviet states. Head to Khachapuri to try the namesake khachapuri , Georgian stuffed-cheese bread. For authentic Uzbek plov , make a reservation at Uzbekistan . Want to keep enjoying the outdoors? Bar Strelka is a trendy spot with great views, excellent food, and a dance floor to keep the night going .

A video shows Prince William and Kate on a shopping trip. Will it stop rumors?

LONDON (AP) — Prince William and his wife Catherine have been filmed at a farm shop near their Windsor home, The Sun newspaper reported — the first footage of Kate since she had abdominal surgery for an unspecified condition two months ago.

The newspaper published a short clip late Monday that appeared to show William and Kate smiling as they walked together, carrying shopping bags. It said the footage was taken on Saturday in Windsor, west of London.

The Sun quoted Nelson Silva, who said he filmed the video, as saying, “Kate looked happy and relaxed. They look happy just to be able to go to a shop and mingle.”

The couple’s Kensington Palace office did not comment.

The palace has said Kate, 42, will return to official duties after Easter. That’s likely to be once her children go back to school on April 17.

The Sun plastered its front page with “Great to see you again, Kate!” It said it had decided to publish the footage “in a bid to bring an end to what the Palace has called the ‘madness of social media.’”

Feverish and at times fantastical speculation has swirled about the princess’s condition during her absence. The palace has not disclosed details, but said it is not cancer-related.

Kensington Palace released a photo of Kate and her children George, Charlotte and Louis on March 10 to coincide with Mother’s Day in the U.K. But the move backfire when The Associated Press and other news agencies retracted it from publication because it appeared to have been manipulated, fueling even more conjecture.

Kate issued a statement acknowledging she liked to “experiment with editing” and apologizing for “any confusion” the photo had caused.

The Kate Middleton sighting that got reported on this week is real after all -- 'cause a new video of her during this outing has surfaced ... and TMZ's got a first look.

TMZ has obtained a clip that was taken of Kate Saturday while she and Prince William were visiting a business about a mile from their home in Windsor -- known as the Windsor Farm Shop -- where The Sun reported eyewitnesses saw them out and about this past weekend.

Onlookers felt she looked "happy, relaxed and healthy" as she strolled in the store -- a supermarket of sorts -- and the couple didn't seem to have a care in the world.

Their three kids weren't with them ... but The Sun also claimed they spent the first part of their Saturday watching the children play sports. At first, there was no real evidence to back up the report ... but now, the first actual visual of her here has surfaced, and it's 100% her.

As you see in this footage, obtained by TMZ, Kate looks relaxed in casual athletic wear ... rocking an all-black look with some pink trimming. Her gait is strong -- a good sign given her purported abdominal surgery. PW is right by her side as they walk out of the Farm Shop with bags in hand.

Nobody around looks to be bothering them ... and Kate, sure enough, does indeed look pretty cheerful here -- smiling wide and even carrying on a conversation with her husband.

One of the eyewitnesses who saw them, Nelson Silva , says ... "I noticed a couple choosing loaves of bread and the woman turned her face and I felt like I had seen the face before. It was familiar. I knew it from somewhere."

He adds, "I went to my car and as they came out of the shop I just filmed them. I think they walked out through a gate out of the grounds. They just vanished and I didn't see a car. I just wanted to share with my family footage and show just how normal they were."

Silva finishes ... "Kate looked happy and relaxed. They look happy just to be able to go to a shop and mingle. Kate looked relieved like it was a success going to a shop. It felt natural."

The couple was walking at a relatively brisk pace ... and Kate, on its face, seems to be okay. Frankly, it's as if nothing was ever wrong with her ... although, of course, we know she was in the hospital for a while for a serious procedure that took her out of commission.

The exact nature of her ailment was never made clear by Kensington Palace officials.

BTW, for all the skeptics who might not believe this was taken as it's been relayed to us -- we've delved into the metadata ... and there's no doubt, this was filmed on Saturday right near the Prince and Princess of Wales' home in Windsor. So yes, it's a legitimate video.

Like we said, this is the first time we've seen Kate out in public -- outside of a car, that is -- since December -- and now that we're seeing her in the wild, on her own two feet, ya gotta wonder if this will satisfy conspiracy theorists who have taken over TikTok.

Remember, the Palace says she underwent abdominal surgery in January -- and was scheduled to be sidelined until at least Easter. Despite this timeline ... that hasn't stopped people from floating jokes/conspiracy theories, which got gravely serious on Mother's Day.

Of course, we're referring to the Photoshop fail seen 'round-the-world ... which showed that Kate (or someone at Kensington Palace) tried to pull a fast one on the public. There were 16 alterations made to the photo ... and it's been debunked as a fake many times over.

Kate ended up copping to it herself ... albeit, in nothing but a social media statement. Lots of people felt she was falling on the sword and that the Palace was behind the edits.

After that botched job ... everyone thought something very serious was going on -- but now, we're seeing Kate out and about and seemingly fine.

Shopping in Moscow can be quite a daunting experience – you can walk for miles without finding anything but mass-market brands and overpriced boutiques. But, if you do it right, it can also be quite fun. Here are our top tips on how to get the most out of your shopping trip in Moscow.

Shopping malls 

There are many shopping malls all around Moscow, but there three that double as bona fide tourist attractions: GUM, TsUM and Detsky Mir, all within walking distance from each other. GUM is one of the oldest department stores in the country. It’s famous for the glass roof designed by one of Russia’s most celebrated architects, Vladimir Shukhov.  Today it serves as a high-class shopping mall. There are plenty of luxury shops, a supermarket that sells lots of signature Russian goods and several places to eat. Head to the more expensive  Bosco Cafe with a Kremlin view or, for a budget option, try the Soviet-style cafeteria Stolovaya No 57 . GUM also occasionally hosts contemporary art exhibitions in one of its three main aisles.

The Red Square and beyond: a guide to Moscow’s neighbourhoods

TsUM  is another shopping mall from the pre-revolutionary times. It’s the most luxurious store in the city, famous for its paper bags that many Muscovites carry around or post pictures of on Instagram to let everyone know they shop there. Full of haute couture boutiques, TsUM also has a rooftop restaurant Buro , frequented by Russian celebrities. Tsentralny Detsky Mir  children's store is perfect if you are looking for a gift for a kid or want to check out its awesome viewing platform with good views over central Moscow. At just R50 per ticket it’s a steal. 

Food stalls and markets 

There are two food markets that are worth checking out in Moscow.  Danilovsky Market  became the trailblazer of Moscow’s foodie revolution when it got an uplift in 2017. As well as many trendy food stalls, the market also hosts lectures, film viewing and even theatre productions, and it recently opened an antiques section. It’s an architectural landmark, a masterpiece of late Soviet modernism that looks like a UFO. Food at  Usachevsky Market  tends to be a bit more pricey and upmarket. Both markets also sell plenty of fresh produce, local cheeses and cured meats.

Antiques and flea markets 

Shopping can also be a way to get away from the major landmarks and explore some sights off the beaten path. Moscow’s #1 flea market is  Izmailovsky , located in and around the pseudo-historical complex 'Izmailovsky Kremlin' with its colourful walls and domes. Open daily, it’s best to come here on the weekend to catch better deals. Admittedly tacky, Kremlin has a handful of weird museums like the Vodka History Museum or Baba Yaga Museum (Baba Yaga is a Russian fairy tale character). Part of the market had been gentrified into creative cluster Vernissage , with hipster coffee shops, various workshops and Svalka , an enormous two-floor secondhand shop with everything from used books to vintage clothing.

For high-class antiques, rare books and icons head to Antikvarnaya Lavka (Antique Store) just off Bolshaya Nikitskaya street (5 Kalashny Pereulok). Here you can snag a real masterpiece – a painting or a sculpture – but the prices are quite steep. 

Four great day trips from Moscow

If you are looking for a more authentic place with less hustle, one option is the antiques market on the premises of vodka distillery Crystal (4 ul Samokatnaya), which you can reach by taking tram 20 to Samokatnaya ul from the exit of metro Chkalovskaya. The market is located in the basement of one of the red-brick factory buildings. There are plenty of antiques, books and various Soviet-time memorabilia, such as Stalin and Lenin busts. While at Crystal, be sure to check out great works of street art – they are all around the factory premises. 

For die-hard antique collectors there’s also a place right outside of Moscow – Novopodrezkovo market (also know as Levsha market). Take a suburban train from Leningradsky station to Novopodrezkovo (approximately half an hour), cross the tracks to the other side and there you’ll find it – a treasure trove of used books, vinyl records, clothing, paintings and antique furniture.   

Where to shop for Russian designs

Gosha Rubchinskiy might be the only Russian clothing designer of world renown, especially after his collaboration with Kanye West, but there are many more up-and-coming fashion stars worth checking out. One of the places to do it is KM20 , the place Moscow fashionistas, with streetwear brands from all over the world and a lot of very rare items. There's also one of the best vegetarian cafes in Moscow on second floor. 

GUM shopping mall has a two-storey store devoted to Russian designers –  Sektsiya (Section). Section sells products made by 50 Russian brands, from accessories to Heart of Moscow souvenir pins. Plus there’s a bar overlooking the Red Square. 

If you are not into high fashion, but still interested in getting a cool outfit with Cyrillic script, check out the creative cluster centred around two abandoned factories: Flakon and Khlebozavod . One of the biggest stores is Zaporozhets Heritage  at Flakon , which sells clothing and accessories styled after various Soviet pop culture icons. The northern part, Khlebozavod, hosts several shops like Yunost  and Khlebny  that take a more punk-rock approach to streetwear. After shopping, have a pint at a great local craft beer bar Svoboda  or a coffee at Floo .        

Sputnik 1985 is a Russian clothing brand specialising in hoodies and hats with quotes in Cyrillic and retro prints. The store is located in a courtyard on Pokrovka street (19 Ulitsa Pokrovka).

Update—4:45 p.m., March 18: We have video proof! On Thursday afternoon TMZ published a video of William and Kate’s shopping trip. The video appears to be taken from a distance and shows the Princess of Wales dressed casually in black leggings and a zip-up athletic jacket with hot pink accents, with her long hair worn down and straight. She carries a shopping bag and appears light on her feet; she shows no sign of pain or discomfort related to her surgery. Prince William walks by her side in a similarly laid-back look of jeans, a navy coat, and a baseball hat worn low over his brows. Of course, the video has already caused cries of “stunt double,” though once again, those claims are unsubstantiated.

ORIGINAL STORY—11:19 a.m., March 18

Kate Middleton was allegedly spotted out and about with Prince William on Saturday, March 16, according to The Sun .

The princess reportedly visited Windsor Farm Shop, which is located approximately one mile from Adelaide Cottage, where she has been convalescing following her abdominal surgery earlier this year.

Per the outlet, Middleton looked “happy, relaxed, and healthy”—and we’ll just have to take their word for it, since there were no images from the outing.

At any other time in history, it would be sort of, kind of, believable that the Princess of Wales could get away with an outing sans paparazzi photos. However, when the whole world has been shouting “Where’s Kate Middleton?!” at the top of their lungs, the idea that no one snapped even the grainiest, blurriest photo or video is a bit suspect.

The future queen has been taking a break from public life since Christmas, and speculation is reaching a tipping point.

The 42-year-old is not expected to make any public appearances on behalf of the royal family until at least the beginning of April, according to Kensington Palace, which stated that she would be in recovery until Easter (March 31).

This sighting comes after two blurry paparazzi photos (which were picked apart and called fake by conspiracy theorists on the internet) of Middleton were published earlier this month. The princess also shared a photo of herself with her children on the UK’s Mother’s Day; that image was later recalled by photo agencies due to evidence of heavy-handed photoshopping. The princess later apologized for her amateur photo editing.

Perhaps after all the hullabaloo online, Kensington Palace went to extreme lengths to ensure there were no photos of this latest outing? I mean, you can’t claim “photoshop” when there’s no photo….

THE Princess of Wales smiled and looked relaxed and happy on a shopping trip with devoted hubby William.

Kate , 42, dressed down in a hoodie and leggings, carried her own shopping as she strolled through the car park at a farm shop .

Footage emerged just hours after The Sun exclusively revealed Kate had spent Saturday shopping in Windsor and Sunday morning watching her children play sport.

It comes amid weeks of vile and bullying online behaviour where wild conspiracy theories have spread unchecked.

Brave Princess Kate has since revealed she was diagnosed with cancer - but has revealed she is getting stronger.

Some even refused to believe our front page yesterday, despite Wills and Kate having being spotted by members of the public.

The Sun last week called on the world to 'Lay Off Kate' after she was harshly criticised for editing her Mother's Day family photo.

'MADNESS OF SOCIAL MEDIA'

We have chosen to both report her appearance in yesterday's paper, and show the footage today, in a bid to bring an end to what the Palace has called the "madness of social media".

Despite appearing fit and healthy, the princess remains under medical guidance to keep off work until next month.

No date has yet been given for a return to public duty after her abdominal surgery more than eight weeks ago.

The images of her smiling really warm my heart and I’m sure millions of others will be so pleased to see the Princess out and about.

There have been so many rumours circulated about her on social media - but they can now be put to rest.

It was lovely to see William at Kate’s side. I bet other visitors to the farm shop couldn't believe their eyes when they walked in.

But I know the shop and it’s close to their home and sells wonderful produce.

Kate was really hammered by some for doctoring her Mother’s Day picture.

I really felt for her - she was just trying to produce a lovely picture of her family.

So it’s nice to see these wonderful images of her with a beaming smiling and clearly working her way back to full health.

Now I’m so looking forward to her getting back to life as a working Royal, when she’s fully ready. She’s been missed by millions.

The Sun revealed yesterday that the Princess of Wales was well enough to go shopping at Windsor Farm shop.

Nelson Silva, 40, who took the video, was shopping for steak when he spotted Kate and William in the bread aisle.

He told The Sun: "I noticed a couple choosing loaves of bread and the woman turned her face and I felt like I had seen the face before. It was familiar. I knew it from somewhere.

"Then William turned back and I thought 'hold on I know this person'. I said to the staff 'I think it's them' as I paid.

"I went to my car and as they came out of the shop I just filmed them. I think they walked out through a gate out of the grounds. They just vanished and I didn't see a car.

"I just wanted to share with my family footage and show just how normal they were."

He said the couple had obvious "chemistry" and "were super relaxed".

"I didn't feel like they were hiding who they were. But they didn't quite know how people would react because there has been this build-up about their whereabouts and I got the sense they just wanted to be swift in there.

"Kate looked happy and relaxed. They look happy just to be able to go to a shop and mingle. Kate looked relieved like it was a success going to a shop. It felt natural."

Another eyewitness who watched the footage said it was "exactly what I saw".

They added: "It's just a woman shopping with her husband on a Saturday afternoon just like thousands of other couples across the country.

"I'm delighted that she is well and everyone else can see her back on her feet enjoying life again."

On a busy weekend the princess also joined William to watch their children George, 10, Charlotte, 8, and Louis, 5, play sports together.

The first footage of Kate since Christmas Day shows the royal mum-of-three carrying a full shopping bag of goodies at the farm shop, just a mile from the Wales’ home at Adelaide Cottage , Windsor , on Saturday.

A DAD-of-one has told how he saw Princess Kate on a shopping trip with William.

Nelson Silva, 40, who took a video of the "relaxed" couple, was shopping for steak at the Windsor farm shop when he spotted Kate and William in the bread aisle.

DRESSED-DOWN

She was filmed on a mobile phone for several seconds walking side-by-side with her husband from the shop back towards the car park.

Kate, usually dressed in latest fashions for official royal occasions, still looked elegant in her weekend wear as she donned a black three-quarter zip hoodie and matching black leggings.

Providing a glimpse of Kate's regular weekend 'dress-down' look she also wore grey socks pulled up over the bottom of her trousers and black trainers.

Kate appeared to be in good spirits smiling and speaking to William as her hair blew in the wind.

Wills wore a beige baseball cap, paired with a black rain jacket, blue denim jeans and grey trainers.

The future King also carried his bag with goods in from the Windsor Farm Shop.

And The Sun's royal photographer Arthur Edwards has told how the footage has "warmed my heart" .

Kensington Palace maintains Kate is “doing well” and will offer only significant updates as she recovers.

She spent 13 nights in hospital after requiring major surgery to her abdomen on January 17 at The London Clinic .

The palace said at the time: "The Princess of Wales appreciates the interest this statement will generate. She hopes that the public will understand her desire to maintain as much normality for her children as possible; and her wish that her personal medical information remains private."

But in the past two months the internet has become a cesspit of unfounded gossip.

Conspiracy theories, which are far too ludicrous to be repeated in The Sun, spread around the internet.

Earlier this month a palace spokesman blasted the "madness of social media".

Kensington Palace has always said she would be out of action until April.

It is now believed that Kate may return after her children's Easter school holidays in the middle of April.

SERIOUS SURGERY

It has been a difficult nine weeks since the princess was admitted to hospital.

William, 41, visited his wife every day in hospital and took time off work to help her settle back home at Adelaide Cottage.

He has been carrying on the school run in an effort to make life as normal as possible for his young family.

Kate spent half term school holidays in February at Anmer Hall , in Norfolk, with William and their children.

But speculation was rife after William pulled out of a thanksgiving service for his godfather at the start of the month citing a "personal matter".

A photograph taken by a paparazzi photographer showing Kate in the passenger seat of a car with her mum Carole at the wheel was printed on a US showbiz website.

Kate apologised 24 hours after releasing a family photograph with her three children to mark Mother's Day after it emerged she had edited.

The Photoshop mistake led to a torrent of abuse hurled online at the Princess of Wales.

The Sun understood the princess had been under pressure to produce the best picture she could, and led with the front page headline 'Lay Off Kate' .

Sources close to the couple have indicated that they have been affected by the vile social media lies.

Kensington Palace last night declined to comment.

Experts have said the sightings are a “great sign” and show the country how well she is doing in her three-month recovery process.

An onlooker spotted the “happy” Kate and Wills before capturing video.

They said: "When I went inside I looked around and noticed them. They all looked happy."

The Sun exclusively revealed her farm shop outing over the weekend – but no images were published of the trip at the time.

It comes after wild speculation and gossip about her health and whereabouts left Kate and Wills “devastated”.

'Lay off Kate'

THE Sun last week  led the way in defending Princess Kate  when she was being criticised from all angles over the edited photo saga.

Social media trolls were quick to attack the  future Queen over her editing  of a  Mother’s Day family picture .

Media critics also weighed in with their opinions alongside the idiotic conspiracy theorists, but  The Sun stood alone in saying: Lay off Kate.

Our front page blasted: "The furious attacks on the future Queen over her photoshopping of a Mother’s Day family picture are not just absurd.

"They now look like a bullying campaign against a devoted mum, recovering from a serious operation, who simply wanted to offer the public a perfect portrait of her and her kids.

"She meant well, made a mistake and fessed up. Fair enough.

"Now leave her alone to get over her op."

Royal expert Hugo Vickers spoke exclusively to The Sun and revealed Kate's short outings are a "good thing" and show the country she is doing well - adding cruel trolls are a "waste of time".

He said: "We love her dearly. She does a fantastic job, and it's a pity that people have taken this sort of attitude towards her.

"But supposing there could be, let's say, some moving footage of her walking around the garden with the children , I would have thought something like that.

"I mean a shopping expedition, a visit to a school match. These are all very positive things.

Leave her alone, let her get better at her own pace. We admire her and respect her. And why are we treating her as if she's some sort of a criminal for having, maybe, you know, tried to improve a photograph one way or another Hugo Vickers

"These are things which so-called normal parents do very regularly and totally. It's a thoroughly good thing.

"We don't need to know everything about Catherine. What we do long to know is that she's well and up and about and soon you know, taking her place again, because she is an enormous asset to the Royal Family, much loved and much respected."

It comes after Kate was embroiled in hurtful criticism over a Mother’s Day picture which she altered using Photoshop.

The royal was trolled online for her attempt to edit the snap with her kids.

Hugo said the public should "leave her alone" during what is understandably a fragile time.

He added: "The photograph was well received when it first came out, and then it was criticised later.

"But as the week went on, I think the general attitude suddenly over here in Britain and amongst intelligent people was, oh, come on, you know.

"Leave her alone, let her get better at her own pace.

"We admire her and respect her. And why are we treating her as if she's some sort of a criminal for having, maybe, you know, tried to improve a photograph one way or another.

"It was very unattractive what was done last week, but I think the sympathy is absolutely there.”

Palace  sources told  The Sunday Times  that Kate is keen to speak about her health battle — but only when she returns to frontline duties.

One friend said: “She and William are at their most open when out interacting with the public.

“I can see a world in which the Princess might discuss her recovery out on engagements.

“If she was going to do it, that’s how she would do it.

“They appreciate the public’s love and affection for their children and know there is a public appetite to see them on their birthdays.”

'KATESPIRACIES' 

The friend said  Wills and Kate  had been “shaken” by the online hysteria over her health and the fallout over her Mother’s Day snap.

But they said the couple refused to be pushed into revealing details.

The pal added: “They will want to be clear and more open, but they’ll do it when they feel ready.

“I would expect that to be her instinct and it will be her call. They are not going to be rushed.”

Kate was discharged 13 days after her January operation.

But as she recuperated speculation grew online over her health.

It was stoked further when William pulled out of a memorial service last month.

“Katespiracies” have ranged from her getting cosmetic surgery to appearing as a contestant on The Masked Singer.

Kamala Harris marks first visit to Puerto Rico as vice president, drawing some protests

Vice President Kamala Harris visited Puerto Rico on Friday as part of a whirlwind trip to tout the federal aid the U.S. territory has received following deadly hurricanes and to attend a Democratic fundraiser.

Her visit comes days after President Biden visited Western states in a campaign tour targeting Latino voters ahead of the November general election. Although those in Puerto Rico cannot vote in U.S. presidential elections despite being American citizens, more than 5 million Puerto Ricans live on the U.S. mainland.

Accompanying Harris for the roughly five-hour visit to the island were Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm and Housing and Urban Development Deputy Secretary Adrianne Todman. Welcoming them was Gov. Pedro Pierluisi, a Democrat whose New Progressive Party has long pushed for statehood.

Harris’ first stop was to visit a new home in the northern municipality of Canóvanas, near the capital. It had been destroyed after Hurricane Maria hit the island in September 2017 as a powerful Category 4 storm, killing nearly 3,000 people in its aftermath.

En route, the motorcade passed people holding their phones up as it went by. Some onlookers leaned out of their cars to take photos as they waited for the motorcade to pass, while others stood outside businesses and homes as the motorcade continued. One girl held a sign imploring help to fix her home.

“I see we are making a difference. There is still more work to do,” Harris said as she stood on the lawn of the new home draped with a large Puerto Rican flag. “We are ambitious. Yes, we are impatient.”

It was Harris’ first visit to Puerto Rico as vice president. She visited as a U.S. senator in 2017 after Hurricanes Irma and Maria pummeled the island.

Harris said one of the ongoing challenges Puerto Rico faces is intermittent energy sources, with outages still occurring daily since Maria destroyed the power grid. She noted that the federal government has provided some $3 billion in reliable energy sources, including rooftop solar panels. It also shipped mega-generators last year to minimize outages.

“[This] is about an upgrade on quality of life and just the well-being and dignity of each family to be able to satisfy their basic needs,” she said, adding that hurricane resistance technology is being used. “Puerto Rico taught us some lessons.”

Meanwhile, Todman said that more than 6,000 homes have been repaired and more than 3,500 new units built since the devastating storm.

“It’s undeniable that more work remains to be done,” she said.

Reconstruction in the years following Maria was slow, in part given the spending restrictions that the Trump administration implemented at the time.

During Harris’ visit Friday, Pierluisi thanked her and Biden for their help: “They’re with us in connection with this reconstruction.”

Hours before Harris’ arrival, a couple of dozen protesters gathered in Puerto Rico’s capital to decry the island’s territorial status and demand a cease-fire in the Gaza Strip.

“We find her presence disrespectful,” said Joselyn Velázquez, a protest spokeswoman, as a group around her waved Palestinian flags.

Nearby, one demonstrator stood on a U.S. flag while others gathered additional American flags and set them on fire.

“She is not welcome here,” said one protester.

After visiting the home in Canóvanas, Harris stopped by a community center in San Juan where a handful of protesters gathered, yelling, “Yankee, go home!” as supporters chanted, “USA! USA!” One protester held a sign that said “Kamala Harris war criminal.”

Harris later spoke at a campaign reception before flying back to the U.S. mainland Friday evening.

She addressed about a couple of dozen attendees gathered at an upscale apartment complex owned by developer Nicholas Prouty, who hosted the event. Harris thanked him and Pierluisi, noting that the governor “does not pass up the opportunity” to have a list of what Puerto Rico needs. “Mad respect,” she said.

Turning to the general election, Harris said, “We are going to win,” adding that “everything is at stake.”

“What we are looking at is fundamentally an election that’s going to require us each to answer a question,” Harris said. “What kind of country and world do we want to live in?”

Harris then talked about what she sees as Republicans’ “full-on attacks on fundamental rights,” adding, “But the thing about being a role model is people watch what you do to see if it matches what you say.”

She described Donald Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee, as someone who has expressed admiration of dictators and “someone who has, speaking of Puerto Rico, used words like ‘dirty’ and ‘poor’ and ‘corrupt.’”
