Postojna Cave and Lake Bled, Slovenia: An Epic One Day Road Trip
Last Updated on March 13, 2024 by Nicole
Lake Bled, Slovenia. How many times did I see photos of this magical fairytale place before I decided that I had to visit? Countless! So, this past summer, when I, my husband and two daughters had a few days to explore a country in central Europe, we decided to go to Slovenia. However, Lake Bled was only one of many breathtaking places that we visited. On an epic one day road trip, we went to Lake Bled, Vintgar Gorge, Predjama Castle and Postojna Cave. It was a long day, but worth it. Now that I have visited and know what I know, I would say that each place was truly remarkable. However, I wasn’t altogether thrilled about a couple of things.
Ljubljana Old Town
We were pleasantly surprised by the sophisticated and medieval beauty of Ljubljana Old Town, our home base during our time in Slovenia. We stayed at the small, but luxurious Lesar Angel Hotel in the pedestrian zone. During our four days there, we explored the historical sites, did a cool private street art tour and ate at several memorable restaurants. If you are interested in hearing more about our time in Ljubljana Old Town, please refer to my article Ljubljana Old Town, Slovenia: 7 Of My Favourite Things .
We decided to book a car, driver and guide for our one day road trip rather than self drive. Why? I knew that we were being very ambitious in what we wanted to see in one day. Further, I wanted all of us to be able to enjoy the scenery and relax without being worried about getting lost. Lastly, we wanted to learn as much history and culture as we could while visiting these magnificent sights. Having a driver and guide allowed us to make the most of our time and accomplish these goals.
However, if you have more time, there is absolutely no reason to avoid self driving. The roads were excellent and the driving was unremarkable. Once we left Ljubljana, we barely faced any traffic. The only issue might be parking at Lake Bled, Vintgar Gorge and Predjama Castle. We either did not require parking (our driver dropped us off at Lake Bled to explore) or we received special parking privileges (we were able to park at entrances) because we were touring with a registered guide. Not a big deal unless you are short of time.
Private Tour
I booked our private tour through Roundabout Travel . We had a large van with an english speaking driver/guide. Our tour lasted 10 hours and it cost 460 euros for all traffic related costs and entrance fees into Postojna Cave and Predjama Castle (142 euros for the four of us). After Montenegro , I thought this was quite expensive. However, from my research, it seemed to be the going rate. On the plus side, the tour was excellent – we covered a lot of ground, saw much of the countryside and learned a great deal about Slovenia.
Lake Bled is a lake in the Julian Alps an easy 45 minute drive from Ljubljana. It is STUNNINGLY beautiful. It is surrounded by breathtaking mountains, magnificent trees and lovely beaches. In the middle of the lake, there is Bled Island which has a small church called the Assumption of Mary and a 52 m (or 171 ft) tower, both built in the 17th century. Perched overtop of Lake Bled is Bled Castle. It is 1000 years old and considered the oldest castle in Slovenia.
Beyond the historical buildings, Lake Bled is a tourist mecca for Slovenians. Boating, biking, hiking and swimming are favourite past times for families visiting this area on weekends or summer holidays . There are many hotels on or around the lake and several restaurants and cafes.
Transport to Bled Island
We decided that we wanted to visit Bled Island to explore the church and see the area from a different point of view. I had read that the boat trip and spending time on the island was a “must do” experience.
Apart from renting your own kayaks or rowboats, the only way to get to Bled Island was to hire one of the many “pletnas” waiting on the shore for passengers. A pletna is like a venetian gondola. It carries approximately 20 passengers and one oarsman paddles from the shore to the island and back, a task which takes around 20 minutes each way. The role of the oarsman dates back to 1740, when Empress Maria Theresa granted 22 local families exclusive rights to ferry religious pilgrims across Lake Bled to worship on Bled Island. The profession is still restricted and many oarsman today descend directly from the original 22 families.
We climbed on board and waited for the boat to fill up. Then, I learned that the total cost of the trip would be 14 euros each! Remember, this was a 20 minute one way paddle on a small and calm lake. Once on Bled Island, we had one hour to explore.
Bled Church
Upon arrival, we climbed the enormous staircase to the top of the island and headed to the church. There, we learned that it would cost another 6 euros to enter the church and climb up the tower. By this point, I was pretty pissed off. Bled Island is tiny. We walked around the island in 5 minutes. Apart from a small cafe, the only thing to see or do on the island is to go into Bled Church. We had already paid 14 euros to get there and now, they wanted another 6 euros to actually enter it. We were not interested. Now, we had to wait one hour until our oarsmen returned with another boat load of people and allowed us to go back to the mainland.
The views of the shore and the mountains were spectacular. However, it was absolutely unnecessary to go to Bled Island to experience this. We could have driven around the lake, or walked or hiked on the many trails to take in the gorgeous views. I would highly recommend saving your money and avoid Bled Island.
Vintgar Gorge
Our guide asked us if we wanted to see Bled Castle or go to Vintgar Gorge. After our experience at Bled Island, this was a very easy choice for us – Vintgar Gorge here we come! However, I did ask if we could drive up to Bled Castle so I could take a photo of the view from the road. He said not for free. That was it – I couldn’t wait to leave Lake Bled.
Vintgar Gorge was a 15 minute drive away. It was on narrow roads through local villages, but an easy drive.
Vintgar Gorge is a 1.6 km ravine that carves its way through the vertical rocks and hills along the Radovna River with waterfalls, pools and rapids scattered along the way. A walkway has been built against the rocks and cliffs, hugging them so tight in certain places that only one person can pass at a time. In other places, the walkway hangs precariously over the gorge, or crosses over waterfalls, giving wonderful views of the area.
Our Experience at Vintgar Gorge
I loved Vintgar Gorge for what it offered – a beautiful and easy walk along a stunning river with gorgeous views of trees and water. I felt totally immersed in nature during our time there.
However, it was PACKED with people which didn’t ruin the experience but it certainly undermined it. Our guide was allowed to park right at the entrance, otherwise it would have taken around 20 minutes to walk from the overflow parking lot to the entrance. Then, there was a massive line up to purchase tickets which our guide was able to bypass. Finally, for most of the walk, we ended up in a single file line up walking one way, while we passed another single file line up of people walking in the opposite direction. There were certain spots where we found space to stop and look around. However, not many.
Finally, most people had to make this a return trip. The walkway wasn’t a circle, but a line. So, once you reached the end of the 1.6 km walkway, everyone had to turn around and walk the other way. We were lucky. Our driver drove and met us at the other side. I was relieved that we didn’t have to go back into the crowds.
Predjama Castle
Predjama Castle is a Renaissance castle built into the mouth of a cave. It is 800 years old and is perched in the middle of a 123 m (or 400 ft) cliff. It is the largest cave castle in the world. Behind and underneath the castle, are a network of secret tunnels that allowed owners of the castle to either secretly send out plundering expeditions or hide in the event of an attack.
It took us 2 hours to drive from Vintgar Gorge to Predjama Castle, mostly along rural roads and beautiful rolling hills. From Ljubljana, it would have only taken an hour.
We spent an hour exploring Predjama Castle with our guide and it was amazing! The castle is almost perfectly preserved. The rooms were fascinating to explore. In many instances I was astonished at the complexities involved in building the castle into the rocks. I would highly recommend visiting Predjama Castle.
Postojna Cave
Our last stop of the day was Postojna Cave, an easy 15 minute drive away.
Postojna Cave was discovered hundreds of years ago, but was only open to the public around 200 years ago. Within it, there are towering mountains, rivers and vast subterranean halls that have been created over millions of years through tiny droplets of water. There are over 24 km of underground paths and a 3.7 km train track.
Our Experience at Postojna Cave
This place was extraordinary. We took the train deep into the bowels of the Postojna cave and saw astounding stalagmites and stalactites everywhere we looked, beautifully lit up .A stalagmite is a type of rock formation that rises from the floor of a cave due to the accumulation of material from drippings from above. A stalactite is similar except it is a formation that hangs from the ceiling of caves. On our one hour walking tour, we saw countless stalagmites and stalactites and were awestruck at how spectacular these formations were.
I would highly recommend a visit to Postojna Cave. However, it was very cold inside, especially on the train ride. So, dress very warmly! However, if you do not have proper clothes, they do rent winter coats.
Our one day road trip from Ljubljana Old Town to Lake Bled, Vintgar Gorge, Predjama Casle and Postojna Cave was remarkable. All of them were breathtakingly beautiful, albeit in completely different ways. It wasn’t a perfect experience… although it was close. I am happy we visited Lake Bled but hated the ridiculous cost to visit Bled Island and Bled Church. I am grateful we managed to squeeze in Vintgar Gorge. The walkway and the views of this astonishing ravine were fantastic. However, the crowds were difficult to navigate and impacted our time there. I was completely surprised by the unique experiences that both Predjama Castle and Postojna Cave offered. I have been to many countries over my lifetime. You would be hard pressed to find such interesting experiences anywhere that are so close to one another.

I liked your honest review of Bled Island and appreciated your recommendation of hiking or driving around the lake instead. Always good to know what things are really worth the cost or not. It sounds like having a driver/guide was a good choice though. I have always thought about doing that.
Thanks Elizabeth. It really annoyed me so I had to write about it to get it off my chest!!! A driver/guide would be a great idea especially if you can share the cost among a group of you. It usually ends up cheaper than going on a pre-set group tour.
This is a really action-packed day! I went to Bled this summer and did less than half of these things haha… I wish I had known about the Postojna Castle, what a beautiful place! I’m glad I didn’t miss Vintar Gorge though, what a beautiful place to be close to nature.
It sounds like you spent more time just enjoying the scenery which is so so beautiful! I think that’s a great way to spend your time in that part of the world.
It looks like I need to schedule a trip to Slovenia and experience a road trip for myself. I’m impressed with the number of places that you went to in one day from Ljubljana. It helps to have a driver and a guide to lessen the stresses on the road. I would love to visit the Vintgar Gorge. It’s my type of traveling experience – gorgeous scenery, greenery, and waterfalls. The Postojna Cave is such a beauty too.
We did pack a lot of stuff in that day so the driver/guide was a definite for us. Vintgar Gorge was really beautiful. I’d try and go during off season to really enjoy the beauty of the place.
I loved visiting Lake Bled too about 2 years ago so reading this was a great trip down memory lane 🙂 Predjama castle looks amazing the way it just out of the rocks and the Postojna caves too. Will go there next time I’m in Slovenia, thank you for sharing!
You are welcome!
I loved visiting Lake Bled too about 2 years ago so reading this was a great trip down memory lane 🙂 Predjama castle looks amazing the way it just out of the rocks and the caves too!
Predjama Castle is a masterpiece of engineering. It is amazing what they were able to accomplish 1000 years ago.
I also visited Ljubljana a couple of years back and drove to Lake Bled. It was gorgeous-just enjoying a walk along the lake or taking the hike up to the castle was a wonderful experience, the views from the castle were breathtaking! Also, Vintgar Gorge was lovely. I remember driving further down to Lake Bohinj and that was really good too!
Lucky you! It sounds like you did what we should have done – gone for walks and hiked up to the castle. However, it is really beautiful around there so worth the trip.
What an enchanting road trip. I love driving by myself and discover charming villages and natural gems. I loved the Predjama Castle as it reminds me of some castles on the Italian Alps. Did you find it difficult to drive on that area?
The area was very pleasant to drive around. If you did the road trip yourself and you had more time, you would very much enjoy yourself.
okay another trip for my list!
Sounds like a good list!
I was upset I didn’t get to see any photos from Metelkova Mesto since Ljubljana got mentioned, but it quickly passed when I got to the rest of your article. Slovenia has a lot of beautiful places for tourists to explore. I’m looking forward to visiting. 🙂
We visited Metelkova Mesto when we were in Ljubljana. I wrote a bit about it in my other article https://gofargrowclose.com/2018/11/25/ljubljana-old-town-slovenia/ . I agree with you that Slovenia has many wonderful places to visit. It sounds like you will enjoy yourself once you get there.
Lake Bled is always in my list – I guess one of the main reasons why I want to visit Slovenia. You make the most of your day from Ljubjana. Because Lake Bled and Vintgar Gorge are on one side and Postjona and Predjama Castles are on the other side of the city. But you visited all of them in a day – that is really cool. I guess taking private tour was a good idea. However, as you said, taking self-drive road trip would be great as well.
I think that you will really enjoy yourself once you get to Lake Bled. I think that it would be expensive (accommodation and food) because it is so popular but I am sure with lots of advanced planning, you could find reasonably priced accommodation.
I visited the Postoyna Cave multiple ties and it was one of the first trips I had without my parents (I was in high school) and had an amazing time. Thank you for this virtual tour it made me re-live the whole experience all over again.
That would have been a very much solo trip for a young traveller. It is a pretty beautiful and magical place. Lucky you!

Description
Postojna Cave is the cradle of cave explorations in the world and one of the most visited attractions in Slovenia. After arriving from Lake Bled to Postojna cave, start your day trip with an exciting train ride that will take you deep underground to the towering halls of Postojna Cave . Join a walking tour through the unique world of dripstones and halls, all created millions of years ago, and learn about the active growth of the cave as well as the enigmatic fauna inside it.
Meet an incredible creature, the olm, which lives inside these caves and is called “the human fish” (človeška ribica) in Slovenian due to its skin-like color. It has been nicknamed “the baby dragon” due to its visual similarities to the mythological beasts. This spectacular place below the surface has been visited for the last 200 years by over 38 million people from around the world.
Our next stop will be Predjama Castle , a unique medieval structure built into a sheer cliff around the mouth of a cave. It boasts a Guinness world record as the largest cave castle in the world. It was home to the legendary Erazem of Predjama, a rogue knight whose story rivals that of Robin Hood. Optionally, take an audio-guided tour through the multiple levels of the castle (*there are roughly 200 steps inside) or take in the panorama from the outside while enjoying a drink or a picnic.
Things to know
Our pickup and drop-off location that we use in Bled is the bus station. In case you would like to be picked up / dropped off at a different location, we can accommodate that with a surcharge of 9€/booking.
Your driver will be driving between multiple pickup locations, so we kindly ask you to allow a 20-minute window for your pickup, although we will do our best to be there on time.
You have the option of both. We have a time slot reserved for lunch on each tour, always somewhere with (usually local) restaurants handy. That said, you can always pack your own picnic lunch and eat it wherever and whenever you like. This might sometimes even save time in order to fit a bit of extra sightseeing into your day.
The best thing about our day trips is that they can be tailored to your own level of fitness. Most of the tours are designed with different activities available, so the choice is entirely yours. Please consult the difficulty section under a specific day trip to see what the difficulty level of the tour and particular activity is.
Don’t worry. Our day trips are planned with everyone in mind. If you find an entrance fee too expensive, or you are unsure if you are willing to spend so much of your budget on entrance fees, our guides will always have some free alternatives ready for you. From taking a short hike and finding that perfect photo opportunity, to relaxing in a beautiful spot, we have got you covered.
If you want to, sure! We are well aware that some people love to stay in groups while others prefer some more alone time on their trip. We wanted to give you the opportunity to do things your way. It is your holiday, after all! As long as you respect the group timings and locations designated by your guide, please feel free to customize your itinerary and create your own adventure!
It is important to dress for the season. Slovenia has all 4 seasons, so please check the weather forecast before the day trip regarding temperatures and rainfall. When you are close to the Alps, the weather can change fairly quickly, so your best bet is to always bring an extra layer. We recommend shoes you will be comfortable in. If you are visiting caves, please remember that the caves are cold in the summer, as the cave temperature is constant throughout the year.
It really depends on the level of your restriction. Vegetarian options are fairly easy to find in Slovenia, but vegan dishes, on the other hand, are extremely hard to come by in rural areas of the country and in smaller towns. Please note, that the places where we stop off at for lunch are often traditional and may have difficulties accommodating you outside of their standard menu. We suggest you keep this in mind.
There is so much to do in Slovenia, so we wanted to give you the option of choosing exactly how you would like to spend your time here. Which is why we have compiled a list of popular activities in the areas of your visit and categorized them as extras. Therefore, the choice of which and how many you would like to experience is entirely up to you. We set up some of the most popular activities in the areas of your visit and listed them as extras. The choice of how many and which you would like to do is entirely yours. When you arrive to a destination, such as Lake Bled, the itinerary always allows for any additional activities you might want to do, like visiting Bled Castle or taking a traditional boat ride to the island. You can book all of your chosen extras in advance. Your guide will confirm the bookings with you on the tour and make sure you know everything you need to know. It is always exciting when people come away from the same trip enriched by different adventures and can share and compare their experiences along with the tons of photos they have taken.

Postojna Cave Tour from Ljubljana or Bled
If you don’t want to drive, half day trips run frequently from Ljubljana and Bled and cover both the Postojna caves and the Predjama Cave Castle – See program and book (April to October).
Postojna Cave Park Map
A park has been set up to manage entrance to the caves. It has been a tourist attraction for a long time and one of the first cave to implement an entrance fee. Above is the map with the large car parks, the river, the closest hotel: Postojna Cave Hotel Jama , and the building with the entrance to the cave.
Visiting the caves of Postojna
- It is recommended to book your tour in advance, because (especially in Summer), tours tend to be fully booked
- To avoid the biggest crowds, book the first morning tour
- Postojna cave price – Several tickets are available for purchase – either the cave alone or combined with the Predjama castle or the other caves around – see your options here
- Postojna Cave opening hours – the frequency of tours varies from month to month – check out the timetable here
- Cave Temperature – Inside the cave the temperature remains constant throughout the year at 8°C so bring a jumper!!!
- Difficulty – they say it is easy access. It is true that there is no big staircase and a well-maintained path is available throughout, but there is a significant slope at the beginning and the pace is quite fast. Combined with the stress of being underground, it could be difficult for some people.
Where to stay near the Postojna Caves
I have 2 suggestions for your stay:
- I stayed at Postojna Cave Rooms & Apartments Proteus – Nice little apartment in the center of the small town – great restaurant, 5 min drive from the cave – Check out photos and availability
- Or you can stay at the Postojna Cave Hotel Jama which is right by the entrance of the cave and offers great views. It has fantastic reviews – Check out photos and availability
- Otherwise, check out the best rated accommodations in Postojna
Postojna Caves Facts, History and Geology
The world-renowned Postojna caves are the largest in the karst region . Imagine:
- So far, more than 24km of galleries have been found
- 5km of galleries are open to the public and they are mostly horizontal making it easy to visit
- You can admire enormous stalactites and stalagmites and many fascination formations throughout the caves – it is often described as fairytale-like
- There has been carriage to transport visitors since 1872
- Electric lighting has been set up inside the cave since 1883!
Here are a few interesting facts about Postojna and the Slovenian karst caves in general:
- The Postojna caves were “discovered” in the 13th century, explored in the early 18th century, and opened as a tourist attraction in 1819
- Several species of Ice Age animals have been found inside the cave
- They were formed over millions of years by the Pivka River – A karst landscape appears where there is water-soluble rock like limestone and dolomite
- The Slovenian Karst Plateau (Kras) is at the origin of the scientific name karstic
- The Karst cave system of Slovenia has a great subterranean biodiversity with more than 400 species identified
- The best known and largest is the Olm or white Salamander, considered the offspring of the dragon lol
Postojnksa Jama Entrance
Carpark at postojna cave & walk to the entrance.
When arriving in the attraction park, there are large carparks available. Fees apply on top of cave entrance. From the carparks, you have a few minutes of walking with a crossing of the river and some steps or slope to reach the entrance of the cave.
Need to rent a car in Slovenia?
- Compare prices on my favorite platform: Discovercars.com – one of the best rated comparison sites!
- Choose a car with enough power for the mountain roads
- Consider their full coverage option – it for peace of mind!
- Book early to have a large choice of vehicles!
See all my tips
Postojna Entrance
You must arrive earlier than your tour time and queue where your language pole is. Tour guides speak several languages: English, Italian, German…
Note that it looks like you are going to enter through the holes in the rock but it is not the case so don’t push to be at the front. You will actually move backwards to enter on the right.
Slovenia Cave Train Ride
One of the fantastic features of the Postojna cave is that you can explore part of the galleries in a train. This way you can see a lot more, and explore caves which are deeper underground.
The cave has had a railway since 1872! Of course nowadays, it is a modern version.
Once you are sitting in the train, a screen explains the safety procedures such as keeping your arm inside and not standing (there are tunnels!)
Because of the speed, it was very difficult to photograph. You go through narrow tunnels and larger chambers.
As you can see in the photo below, there is another rail track for the return. Postojna is the only cave in the world with a double-track railway line! The track is 3.7 km long.
Return train ride
After the train, you start a walk of about 1 hour in the caves (see next section). At the end, you get back on the train and enjoy the ride back to the entrance.
I don’t drink coffee
But I also like other drinks and sweets! Do you like the free content you find on my blog? All my tips and practical information, without intrusive advertising…
Postojna cave walk
Once at the end of the railway track, you will be grouped for the visit by languages. The groups are too big for my taste but after a while you get more and more space. It starts with a slope. It was a little difficult for my mum with her bad knees.
The walk goes through tunnels, and chambers of all sizes and different colors. There is a well-maintained path throughout the visit, which is great because you want to focus on everything around and not where you place your foot.
Some rooms have small stalactites shaped like needles:
At one point you must cross the Russian Bridge, built by prisoners of war in 1916. It seems I did not take a picture of it…
And at the end of the Postojna cave tour, before climbing into the return train, there is a souvenir shop inside the cave!!!!
Postojna Jama – Geological features
Brilliant and baroque.
The most famous feature in Postojna is called ‘Brilliant’. It is considered the most beautiful stalagmite. It is 5 meters tall and white in color! Right by its side is the Baroque Pillar which is dark but which I preferred.
Other features
The caves also have a lot of organ-like features which are some of my favorites with series of dripping stalactites.
Proteus – The Olm
At the end there is a vivarium where you are supposed to be able to see the famous cave dwellers which look like a dragon larva and can’t see. Photos are not allowed, but anyway, I did not see anything at all!
The rock star of the caves could be up to 100 years old and it is staying in its larva form with the color of flesh. It is quite impressive that such a big animal is capable of living within this type of environment…
Postojna Castle – Predjama
A visit to the Postojna Caves is often combined with the Predjama castle. Only a 15min drive away from the caves, this castle is quite unique. Located on a cliff side by a cave, it is in great condition and you can safely visit it to see the difficult living conditions it offered in exchange of great protection.
You can learn more in my article about the Predjama Castle
Skojcan – Other famous Slovenia Caves
The region offers the possibility to visit to many other Slovenia caves but they are not so easily accessed, therefore less touristic. The other significant caves are in the Skocjan Caves Park, which is a Unesco World Heritage site . Those caves were created by the River Reka. They have fewer interesting features but are the most impressive by the size of the chambers and because of the river flowing at the bottom!
Sadly, photos are not allowed inside.
Several tours are offered. The most famous is ‘through the underground canyon. You need a minimum level of fitness to complete this tour. There is no train to help you and it is not flat.

Top 5 tours for visiting Postojna Cave in Slovenia
Do you want to visit Postojna Cave and are struggling to decide which tour is the best fit for you? Let me help you!
I am from Slovenia and have lived in Ljubljana for years, so I get this question a lot whenever I have friends visiting. To make things easier for you, I have put together the top 5 tours for visiting Postojna Cave .
I did my best to put together tours of different price ranges to make sure you find something that fits your needs, but please bear in mind that the cave entrance ticket alone costs almost € 30.
Let’s dive in!
Don’t have time to read it all?
This day trip from Ljubljana to Postojna Cave and Predjama Castle is our most recommended tour for visiting these incredible attractions.
Day trip to Postojna Cave and Predjama Castle
- Pick-up in Ljubljana
- Tickets included
- Audio guides included
Bled & Postojna Cave
- Combine the best attractions in Slovenia
- Full day trip
Postojna Cave, Predjama Castle and Piran
- Visit the seaside
- Hotel pick-up
Top 5 Postojna Cave tours – the full list
To help you decide which is the best Postojna Cave tour for your style, I will describe below what each of our selected top tours includes and why they deserve a spot on this list.
I did my best to select varied options to make sure you will find something that fits your needs.
1. Half-day trip to Postojna Cave and Predjama Castle
In my opinion, this is the best tour for visiting Postojna and Predjama Castle .
This tour is organized as a half-day trip from Ljubljana and what I love the most about it is that all tickets and audio guides are included , so you do not have to worry about a thing. Just get ready on the day of the tour and enjoy your time.
Pay close attention when buying any Postojna Cave tour because many of them will not include the ticket in the price, which means you can expect to pay an additional € 30 to go inside the cave.
This tour also offers pick-up in main locations in Ljubljana, which is extremely convenient for anyone staying in the city center.
2. Full-day tour to Lake Bled, Postojna Cave and Predjama Castle
This tour deserves a spot in this list because it combines a visit to the main attractions in Slovenia: Lake Bled and Postojna Cave .
Organized as a full-day trip from Ljubljana, the tour will first take you to visit Postojna Cave and Predjama Castle (tickets are also included).
Afterward, you will go to Lake Bled with tickets included for visiting Bled Castle. What I like about this tour is that you will have enough time to explore a bit the area around the lake and even go for a swim if you will be visiting during the summer.
3. Tour to Postojna Cave, Predjama Castle and Piran
The great thing about this tour is that it combines a visit to Postojna Cave and the Slovenian seaside town of Piran .
Piran is my favorite city on the Slovenian coast. Especially if you will be traveling during the summer when the daytime is long, you will see that this city is extremely cute and bustling with tourists.
The biggest downside of this tour is that it does not include the tickets to Postojna Cave, so you will have to buy those on the side.
4. Private tour to Postojna Cave and Lake Bled
Don’t like sharing your day with a full group and being dependent on other people’s timelines? Then consider this private tour instead!
This tour will take you to Postojna Cave and Lake Bled, with the option of adjusting the itinerary based on your wishes . Since this is a private tour, it gives you more comfort and flexibility about what you want to see and do.
This is a full-day tour of approximately 10 hours, which is plenty of time to explore the best of what Slovenia has to offer.
5. Postojna Cave tour with a visit to the Lipica Stud Farm
This is the perfect day trip for families . It is a private tour, which gives additional comfort and privacy to your family day trip.
This tour includes a visit to Postojna Cave followed by a visit to the Lipica Stud Farm.
Located on the Slovenian seaside, the Lipica Stud Farm is famous for its white Lipizzaner horses that are bred and trained on-site. They have riding lessons and an overall beautiful farm where you can take a tour, have a picnic, and enjoy the horses.
Afterward, this Postojna Cave tour also includes a visit to Piran, one of the most picturesque cities in the Slovenian seaside.
Note that this tour does not include admission tickets to the attractions.
Tours to Postojna Cave from other destinations
The most traditional way to visit Postojna Cave is as a day trip from Ljubljana . However, you can visit Postojna Cave from almost any destination in Slovenia, whether you are staying on the coast such as Koper or Piran, or in Lake Bled, or any other destination.
Below, I have listed a few options for day trip tours to Postojna Cave that start in other places instead of Ljubljana.
- Full-day Postojna Cave tour from Zagreb, capital of Croatia
- Half-day Postojna Cave tour from Koper
- Half-day Postojna Cave tour from Rijeka, in Croatia
- Private Postojna Cave tour from Trieste, in Italy
Don’t want to book a full tour? Organize your own visit to Postojna Cave instead
You don’t need to book a tour if you don’t want to. It is also perfectly possible to visit Postojna Cave on your own and buy the tickets on-site.
I recommend the tour as a great alternative for those who will not be traveling with their own car, but if you rent a car for your trip to Slovenia , it can be more convenient to visit Postojna Cave at your own pace.
Read our guide about visiting Postojna Cave to discover all you need to know to organize your visit.
I hope this guide has helped you decide on the best tour for visiting Postojna Cave during your trip. I understand that people have different needs and priorities, but I truly believe this selection of top 5 tours to Postojna Cave are the best offers available out there.

My wife and I enjoyed the day trip to Postojna cave and Predjama castle. Postojna Cave exceeded expectations with the train ride into the cave and beautiful scenes throughout. The castle near Postojna Cave is beautiful as and full of history. Our guide, Mato, was friendly, knowledgeable, and willing to answer any question we threw at him. When we return to Slovenia, we’ll definitely book another tour through Mamut Slovenia. It was a great experience!
We visited Postojna cave and the castle. The cave was really amazing. It is a huge cave with stunning stalagmite and stalactite. You will go into the cave with the electric train which is a lot of fun. Be prepared for the colder weather inside the cave 😉
We went on Postojna Cave Half Day trip with Mamut Slovenia. We were staying in Ljubljana and we booked our tour there. In the morning they picked us up at our hotel in Ljubljana. We visited the Postojna cave and Predjama castle. The cave is really magnificent. Guide told us all about the areas we’ve visited and went out of his way to make our day special. I would really recommend Mamut agency – they are professional and they will organize the best experience you could wish for.
very nice experience.

Ljubjlana wasn't even on our list 6 months ago, but we are so glad we went. Our only regret is that we only had 4 hours instead of 3 or 4 days. My wife and I hope to get back to Slovenia next year to see even more of this beautiful country. Rest assured, we hope that Tina will be available to lead us. She was accommodating when we had a border delay, accommodating when we needed an extra layer or two, and amazingly kind and giving throughout the day. She took us to see many, many great sites, helped us find the perfect strawberries in the market, and even joined us for glass of wine at the end of our trip. We felt spoiled, but we're most thankful we felt like friends! Read more Written September 22, 2022
- joej20172017 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Great Tour with an Excellent Guide Tina was such a great guide! She was excellent at tying each of the stops on the tour to a particular aspect of Slovenian history and culture. She also was good at picking up on what we did and didn't know about history and set the level of her commentary appropriately--while stopping for questions. This made for a much richer experience, going beyond just walking around and eating/drinking. As for the food and drink, everything we had at every stop was top-notch (and yes, haters, even the cvicek was tasty. Tina will cure you of any anti-cvicek prejudice!) My boyfriend & I fell in love with the city! Tina is one of the best guides you can have (give her a raise pleaseeee she is an Slovenian angel)! I was more into the academic stuff & my boyfriend in the architecture: Tina pleased us both with all the details! She listens, she tells stories, she can handle a discussion! He guided us to a number of hidden gems that we would not have noticed had we toured on our own. He is very knowledgeable about the city and was prepared with print material to better describe and explain certain aspects of the city, which was really helpful. His manner throughout our 2 hour tour was pleasant, considerate and full of fun and interesting facts. The time just flew. Especially appreciated, was the spectacular sunset that he orchestrated for our pleasure at the end of the tour on Butcher's Bridge ( with all the lover's locks ). Great way to end a very nice tour!! Slovenia Adventure Tour: Experience the best of Slovenia on a 3-day trip from Istria
Short on time but want to see Slovenia’s highlights? We’ve got you covered! This 3-day tour will take you from Croatia’s Istrian peninsula to Slovenia’s karst plateau and the Julian Alps.
First, we explore one of the country’s largest cave systems and most breathtaking castles at Postojna and Predjama. Next, we travel to Triglav National Park to get a taste of Slovenian mountain culture in the kingdom of Zlatorog, a mythical mountain goat central to Slovenian folklore. After descending back down to the valley in a cable car, we explore magical alpine lakes in Bled and Bohinj, with time for swimming, SUP, kayaking, and biking on your own.
This 3-day Slovenia adventure tour is perfect for travelers in Istria, Croatia, who are looking for a short trip to some of the most beautiful areas in Slovenia.
Postojna Cave, Predjama Castle & Lake Bohinj
We depart from Istria in the morning and head towards Slovenia’s fascinating karst landscape. The first stop on our Slovenia adventure tour is Postojna Cave, a 24 km-long cave system that was carved by the Pivka River over millions of years. We’ll take an underground train ride and explore around 5 km of the cave, taking in the awe-inspiring galleries, chambers, stalactites, and stalagmites. You’ll learn about the karst features and have the chance to see the cave’s unique fauna, including the “baby dragon” or olm. The temperature in the cave remains around 10 degrees C year-round. Bring appropriate layers so that you can dress warmly during the cave visit, and wear sneakers or other close-toed footwear.
After the cave visit, you’ll have time to get lunch, a snack, or coffee on your own. Next, we’ll make our way to Predjama Castle – the largest cave castle in the world. Through an audio guide and walking tour, we’ll learn about the castle’s history and its former inhabitants as we explore the rooms and underground tunnels.
In the afternoon, we have a 2-hour drive to one of Slovenia’s most picturesque alpine lakes – Lake Bohinj. We’ll settle into our hotel and then have some free time before dinner. You can go for a swim in the lake, rent a kayak or stand up paddle board, or rent a bike to explore some of the local trails before we meet for a group dinner.
Lodging: Lake Bohinj area. Included Meals: Dinner. Included Activities: Predjama Castle and Postojna Cave entry tickets.
Hiking Julian Alps & Savica Waterfall
After breakfast at the hotel, we’ll take a cable car up to the Vogel ski area for one of the most stunning views over Lake Bohinj. The cable car quickly takes us up the mountain to dizzying heights, with breathtaking views of the Julian Alps and Mount Triglav, Slovenia’s highest peak. You’ll have time to enjoy the mountain scenery and take a short walk in the Land of Zlatorog, the legendary Alpine Ibex. Lake Bled Hiking
Today takes us to one of Slovenia’s most iconic destinations – Lake Bled. The clear blue lake surrounded by alpine peaks looks like something out of a fairytale. We’ll start by taking a boat ride to the island in a pletna , a traditional wooden boat. You’ll have time to explore the island on foot, visit St. Mary’s church, and learn about the island’s history.
After we get back to shore, we’ll walk around the lake and hike up Ojstrica mountain for an unforgettable view of Lake Bled and Bled Castle. You’ll then have free time on your own to go for a swim, have lunch, try the region’s famous cream cake, or rent a kayak or stand up paddle board. If you’d like, you can even visit Bled Castle. We’ll meet back up around 4pm and drive to Istria, with arrival expected around 7pm.
