This is my first time flying Aegean Air and I had a great first time experience. I will fly this airline again.

There was not any food and I didn't use the entertainment

Just ok. No much of a great travel experience. If you need point A to B they are ok.

More leg room, great if crew could move people before flight (ie if 3 in a row, offer to move 1 or 2 to an empty 3 seat row rather than let people move themselves after takeoff

Flight was late, boarding totally chaotic, seat uncomfortable, food good, attendants and pilots good.

Priority transfer bag left behind in Amsterdam causing extreme difficulty and inconvenience on arrival destination Athens

On top of the two hours delay in the airport, we needed to go by the bus to the terminal in Athens, Aegean is the aviation of Greece and they whole flight is 50 minutes.

Very delayed. Plus lack of entertainment on board. Crew members were very nice

Never heard about them before and was surprised how organized and efficient they are.

These were tickets purchased with a stolen credit card number.

Seriously, every airline needs to improve their boarding procedures. Even though Sky Express boarded the furtheredt seats from the door first, it was still disappointing that it took so long to board.

Cannot take it dur to the delayed first flight. Staff at the desk very unfriendly.

A coffee at 7 am in the morning would have been nice.

We hope that soon Sky Express will have the entire airplane fleet refreshed. More new airplanes to fill the gap and expand further direct flights to new airports. Crew acts responsibly and kind, which is even more important at this pandemic period.

I was going to miss my connecting flight with sky Express also and the people in the office said they couldn't help me book another flight for the next day, but that I had to wait until anthens and go their office to help me. Other people on staff were friendly though.

Top airlines flying from paris to athens.

Being on time rather than almost 3 hours late would be a start, and also, since it was known from a long time ago that the flight would be late, letting us know ahead so we don’t stay in a small hall at the airport would have been nice

Transit through Cairo was abysmal and I will never repeat this journey !!!

There was a delay of more than an hour due to technical issues on a previous flight, can happen so I don't foult the airline for that. The crew was excellent and very friendly and boarding was pretty efficient. The seats were comfortable enough. However, if you are over 1,80m, don't expect any room for your legs, the room between the rows is extremely tight!

As there are a lot of persons for the boarding and as you open the two doors of the plane, could be ingenious to ask the persons who have the first numbers (for the seats) to enter via the front door and those you are more at the end of the plane to enter by the other door. This would avoid to have passengers who entes by the front door and have to go to the back with luggages. Crazy and waste of time.

There was delay of 2 hours and all related announcements at the gate were done in French. It is not acceptable on international flight! The sandwich that I paid €6 for, was dry, hard and impossible to eat it. This is really a shame for French airline serving such sandwich.

Cancelled while we were waiting at the airport and the flight ready for boarding because of only one Stewart missing! Unacceptable! We were proposed another flight: 5 days later! Unacceptable! We had to pay other tickets of course very expensive the same day!

Your nasty smart , The seat too tight You have to pay for everything 5h20 min Flight with no food no water nothing .I didnt take my Medicine Because I don't have no water The worst trip that I have in my life.1st time flying with Transavia its going to be the last time . I am so disappointed

Olympic flame for Olympic Games Paris 2024 lit in spectacular ceremony

Greek actress Mary Mina, playing the role of the High Priestess, holds the torch during the flame lighting ceremony for the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics at Ancient Olympia

The Olympic flame for the Olympic Games Paris 2024 burst into life today (Tuesday, 16 April) during a special ceremony at the archaeological site of Olympia—the birthplace of the ancient Olympic Games.

During a ritual that links the modern Olympic Games to its ancient origins, the Olympic flame was lit in front of the ruins of the temple of Hera by an actress playing the part of the high priestess.

Several important dignitaries including IOC President Thomas Bach and Paris 2024 President Tony Estanguet were in attendance for the event, which marked the start of the flame's journey from Greece to Paris, where it will arrive on 26 July for the Opening Ceremony of the Olympic Games Paris 2024.

Before the lighting of the Olympic flame took place, president Estanguet spoke of Paris 2024's responsibility to nurture the Olympic flame:

"Our role as organisers is to do everything we can to continue to nurture and grow this flame, in our country and around the world. One hundred years after the last summer Games in our country, the people of France will have the immense honour and pleasure of hosting this magnificent 33 rd Olympiad of the modern Games."

President Estanguet, who won three Olympic gold medals in canoe slalom, added:

"In line with the International Olympic Committee's Agenda 2020, we are proud that the Paris 2024 Games will not only be spectacular, but also more environmentally responsible, in order to meet the challenge of the century: climate change.

"Together, we're going to organise some great Games, and it all starts today, with the launch of the Olympic Torch Relay, which will cross the whole of France, from Marseille to Paris!"

President Bach then took to the stage to deliver his speech, where he stressed that the Olympic Games can bring the world together through peaceful competition.

"In ancient times, the Olympic Games brought together the Greek city states, even – and in particular – during times of wars and conflict. Today, the Olympic Games are the only event that brings the entire world together in peaceful competition. Then as now, the Olympic athletes send this powerful message: yes, it is possible to compete fiercely against each other and at the same time live peacefully together under one roof. The athletes will shine in their sport and show us what greatness humans are capable of with all their excellence, determination and resilience.

"The Olympic flame that we are lighting today symbolises this hope for a better future. The Olympic flame will carry this Olympic spirit from here, our ancient roots, through all of France and to Paris – making the City of Light shine even brighter.

"The Olympic flame will shine over the first Olympic Games inspired by our Olympic Agenda reforms from start to finish. These Olympic Games will be younger, more inclusive, more urban, more sustainable. These will be the very first Olympic Games with full gender parity because the IOC allocated exactly 50 per cent of the quota places to female and male athletes."

The Olympic flame was then brought forward by Greek actress Mary Mina, playing the role of High Priestess, who passed it to the first torchbearer of the Olympic Torch Relay: Greek athlete Stefanos Ntouskos , who won gold in the men's single sculls at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 in 2021.

After receiving the flame, Ntouskos carried the flame to the monument to Pierre de Coubertin, which holds the heart of the father of the modern Olympic movement.

Ntouskos then passed the flame to the second torchbearer of the relay, three-time Olympic medallist Laure Manaudou of France.

After a short run, Manaudou was met by the third torchbearer of the ceremony: Margaritis Schinas , vice-president of the European Commission.

The Olympic flame will now embark upon an 11-day relay throughout Greece that will see more than 550 torchbearers carry the flame, with the final destination being the Panathenaic Stadium for the handover ceremony.

When is the Olympic flame handover ceremony?

The Olympic flame will arrive in Athens ahead of the handover ceremony to the Paris 2024 organising committee at the Panathenaic Stadium on Friday 26 April, with the event getting underway at 18:30 CEST.

Following the ceremony, the Olympic flame will spend the night at the French Embassy in Athens before boarding the Belem (a famous three-masted ship that first launched in 1896) the following day to head for Marseille, France, where it will arrive to great fanfare on 8 May.

Where can I watch the Olympic flame handover ceremony?

The Olympic flame handover ceremony will take place on 26 April at 18:30 CEST and you can watch every moment live on Olympics.com .

America still has the world's busiest airport

  • New data on the world's busiest airports in 2023 reveals the latest trends in global travel.
  • 8.5 billion passengers traveled by plane last year, almost marking a return to pre-pandemic levels.
  • Airports in Asia and the Middle East became busier, but the US has once again clinched the top spot.

Insider Today

International travel is almost back to pre-pandemic levels, according to the just-released list of the world's busiest airports in 2023.

8.5 billion passengers traveled globally by plane last year — up from 7 billion passengers in 2022 .

The rise in air travel marks a recovery to 93.8% of levels in 2019 before the world shut down, according to preliminary data published by the Airports Council International (ACI), a trade association that includes 2,600 airports worldwide.

Increasing travel to airports in Asia and the Middle East was one of the key trends to emerge from the data, with Dubai International Airport jumping from the fifth to the second busiest airport in the world.

Airports in India, Japan, and Turkey also made it into the top 10 and were some of the biggest movers in terms of annual gains in passenger numbers.

As the world's largest domestic market for flights , US airports still make up five of the busiest airports in the world, with Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport retaining its No. 1 position.

Despite tough global economic conditions, there was "a growing inclination towards travel," Luis Felipe de Oliveira, the ACI's world director general, said in a press release.

"Airports continue to demonstrate their resilience and adaptability amidst the challenges posed by the ever-evolving landscape of global travel," said Oliveira.

Here's a closer look at the top 10 busiest airports in the world.

10. Indira Gandhi International Airport, Delhi, India

travel from paris to athens

Passengers: 72.2 million

2022 ranking: 9th

Delhi's main airport, Indira Gandhi International Airport, saw a 21.4% increase in year-on-year traffic. While it has dropped a place this year, Delhi has grown significantly as a transport hub since 2019, when it sat at number 19 in the rankings.

9. Chicago O’Hare International Airport, USA

travel from paris to athens

Passengers: 73.9 million

2022 ranking: 4th

Travel through Chicago O'Hare jumped by 8.1% throughout 2023. O'Hare is a hub airport for domestic travel, particularly for United and American Airlines flights. It is also a focus city for low-cost rivals Spirit Airlines and Frontier Airlines.

8. Los Angeles International Airport, USA

travel from paris to athens

Passengers: 75.1 million

2022 ranking: 6th

Travel through LAX was up 13.8% in 2023, however, compared to pre-pandemic levels in 2019, passengers at the West Coast airport decreased by 14.8% — the largest decrease of any airport in the top ten rankings. LAX is a hub for a number of carriers, including Alaska Airlines, United, American, and Delta. But domestic travel at the airport shrunk dramatically as airlines cut the number of flights following a series of meltdowns in 2022.

7. Istanbul Airport, Turkey

travel from paris to athens

Passengers: 76 million

2022 ranking: 7th

Passenger numbers at Turkey's Istanbul airport have increased by 18.3%, making it the only transit hub to keep level with its previous ranking in the top 10. Notably, traffic through the airport has jumped by 45.7% since 2019.

6. Denver International Airport, USA

travel from paris to athens

Passengers: 77.8 million

2022 ranking: 3rd

Denver Airport has dropped down several places on the list but still shows strong signs of growth in terms of passengers. In the last year traffic through the Colorado airport was up 12.3%, and it has also grown 12.8% from pre-pandemic levels.

5. Tokyo Haneda International Airport, Japan

travel from paris to athens

Passengers: 78.7 million

2022 ranking: 16th

Japan's Tokyo Haneda Airport saw the largest increase in traffic by far, with passenger numbers surging by 55.1%. Some of that jump can be explained by a lag in tourism as Japan only reopened its borders in late 2022. Despite the jump, Tokyo Haneda is still 7.9% under its 2019 level of traffic. This January the airport made headlines after a fatal collision involving a Japan Airlines plane and a coastguard vehicle killed five people.

4. London Heathrow, UK

travel from paris to athens

Passengers: 79.2 million

2022 ranking: 8th

Travel through the UK's largest airport shot up by 218% in 2022 and has once again made strong gains throughout 2023, jumping by a slightly more modest 28.5%. The airport has credited travel from the Asia-Pacific region as a major factor in its increased passenger numbers. It hopes to supersede its pre-pandemic level of traffic in 2024 and hit a record 81.4 million passengers, the airport said in a report published in December.

3. Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, USA

travel from paris to athens

Passengers: 81.8 million

2022 ranking: 2nd

Dallas/Fort Worth airport , known as DFW, is American Airlines' busiest hub and the departure city for many of the airline's international flights. Last year traffic through the airport jumped by 11.4%.

2. Dubai International Airport, UAE

travel from paris to athens

Passengers: 87 million

2022 ranking: 5th

Dubai took the number 2 ranking in the list for the first time, thanks to a significant 31.7% increase in passenger numbers. Dubai's new position reflects the heavy investment that has gone into the aviation industry and boosting tourism in the region.

1. Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, USA

travel from paris to athens

Passengers: 104.7 million

2022 ranking: 1st

Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport comes in at No. 1 as the busiest airport in the world, a position it has held for more than two decades. In 2023, the Atlanta airport saw an 11.7% increase in passenger numbers.

Here's a look at what it takes to be an air traffic controller at the world's busiest airport.

''Olympic torch pauses at Acropolis before journey to Paris for handover''

The flame that will burn at the Olympics is spending the night at the ancient Acropolis in Athens, a week before its handover to Paris 2024 organisers.

During a lull in heavy rain on late Friday, a torchbearer lit a cauldron in front of the 2,500-year-old Parthenon temple, on the citadel that dominates the Athens skyline and is Greece's top tourist draw.

The flame will stay there until Saturday morning, when the champagne-colored torch travels to Delphi, an important ancient Greek religious center, before reaching the town of Volos in central Greece.

Ceremoniously lit on Tuesday at the ruined birthplace of the ancient Games, Olympia in southern Greece, the flame is being carried around Greece by a string of torchbearers. Parts of the relay are being made by ferry or plane.

The flame will be delivered to French officials next Friday at the renovated ancient marble stadium where the first modern games were held in 1896. At Athens' port of Piraeus it will board the Belem, a French three-masted sailing ship — built in 1896 — to be transported to France.

The flame is due to reach the southern French port city of Marseille on May 8, and will travel through France in the buildup to the July 26 opening ceremony in Paris. AP SSC SSC

The 10 Best European Cities to Visit for Every Travel Style

T he world is a big place and for passport holders , there’s no limit to where that little book can take them. With seven continents to choose from, picking the next destination can be hard sometimes. But combine this with the reality that not everyone has unlimited paid time off, and it gets even trickier.

Many travelers try to maximize their time off by visiting multiple locales in one trip. Especially since travel is significantly cheaper once travelers are in Europe, hopping between countries or even several cities within one country is fairly affordable and is a great way to pack in several destinations in one European holiday. If a Eurotrip is on the horizon, here’s a list of some of the best cities to visit and why.

The Best European Cities for Romantic Getaways

Technically any place can be romantic as long as the company is right. But for couples that want romantic vistas, activities that bring two people closer together, and a dreamy experience from start to finish, there are a few cities that reign supreme.

Unsurprisingly, Paris tops this list since it’s known as the city of love. For couples that prefer those classic romantic touristy experiences, visiting the Eiffel Tower, strolling through Versailles, and even shopping (or window shopping) through the Champs-Élysées can’t be missed. Meanwhile, France as a nation is world-renowned for its indulgent cuisine and top-tier restaurants — that’s undoubtedly a great backdrop for a romantic getaway.

For as much as Paris snags the title as the most romantic city in the world, that boot-shaped country to the south is a very popular romantic destination. Of all the Italian cities, Venice tops the list for romantic backdrops. The canals in particular are a popular draw as gondoliers navigate the historic canals lined with brightly colored buildings. But beyond the gondolas, Venice is home to gorgeous architecture like St. Mark’s Basilica and picturesque backdrops like the Rialto Bridge. Venice also hosts an impressive array of festivals throughout the year and has plenty of culture like theaters and live performances.

Some travelers might be surprised to see Amsterdam categorized as a romantic city given the city’s liberal laws on recreational drug use and adult industries. The Netherlands’ capital also doubles as a fun party city. But architecturally, Amsterdam is a beautiful place to get lost with a romantic partner.  Similar to Venice, Amsterdam is an aquatic city with countless waterways for locals and tourists to traverse. While travelers still need boats to get around, gondolas are replaced with motorized boats and the canals are much larger.

Nothing brings two people together faster than trying to keep warm. Reykjavik , Iceland is a destination that’s known for its natural beauty. The most popular times to go will coincide with the Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights — so plan ahead. This tends to be between September through Mid-April when solar activity is at its highest. Still, this Icelandic hot spot is known for its thermal springs like the Blue Lagoon, unique architecture, and nearby natural wonders like the Gullfoss waterfall and Strokkur geyser which are both located in Thingvellir National Park.

The Best European Cities for Family Vacations

Getting exposure to various cultures is the best way to ensure that the younger generations grow up with exposure to differences and break down barriers. If a European family vacation is on the horizon, here are a few family-friendly cities to shortlist.

Ideally, it pays to speak another language. But not everyone is bilingual or a polyglot (speaking more than two languages). And when traveling with small kids or even a large family group, having “lost in translation” moments is beyond frustrating. London is a city that has everything — which makes it perfect for a multigenerational family trip — and where the locals speak English.

Between historical sites, modern wonders like the London Eye, and even pop cultural references like Platform 9 ¾ at King’s Crossing Station. Additionally, London tends to be a more affordable option for American travelers thanks to a wider range of accommodation options.

For families that do speak another language, or don’t mind being fully immersed in places where they don’t speak the main language, Madrid is a popular destination. Along with being Spain’s capital city, it is considered one of the most kid-friendly cities in the country. The Casa de Campo public park is home to both the Madrid Zoo Aquarium and an amusement park. Families can also catch a Real Madrid game, tour the Royal Palace, or walk any of the numerous famous gardens scattered across the city. Additionally, Madrid is famous for its expansive public transportation, and moderately priced accommodations.

Even though Greece is an island, it’s still part of Europe. Athens is a great historical destination and movie lovers will appreciate that it served as the backdrop for “Indiana Jones,” “Hercules” and several more productions. Obviously the ruins like the Acropolis — which is home to the Parthenon and Erechtheion —  are some of the biggest draws for this ancient city. However, Athens also hosts food tours and has a regular changing of the guard in the Syntagma Square.

The Best European Cities for Group Trips

Whether it’s a girl’s trip or an all-genders retreat for the besties, Europe is ready to host groups of all compositions. So, when planning a group trip, here are a few fun cities to add to the list.

If that group trip is meant to be something of a retreat, it doesn’t get any better than Lake Cuomo. This quiet yet tony locale that’s nestled in northern Italy is perfect for amateur paparazzi that want to see celebrities from around the world. Along with the actual Lake Cuomo which is perfect for yachting, the nearby town offers idyllic walks through historic architecture. But plan accordingly since this tony retreat will set travelers back significantly.

If it’s a rowdy bunch that wants to be outside all the time during their group trip, head to Berlin. Germany’s capital city literally has it all from culture to nightlife, and an impressive and growing foodie scene. Specifically, Berlin is considered one of the top cities in Germany and across Europe for clubbing.

This is one place where there’s no such thing as a hard stop for when all the bars or nightclubs need to close. Likewise, affordable food and drinks, and easy access to reliable transportation (both public and ride-sharing), easily makes the case for Berlin as a fun stop for a group trip.

Monte Carlo

Rounding out the best group trip European cities list is Monte Carlo. Located in Monaco — a small island nation located off the French Riviera — Monte Carlo is known for its sophisticated nightlife and cultural scene. The country is notable for its tony residents and the fact that it’s a popular spot for the rich and famous to spend time. From Formula One racing to casinos straight out of “James Bond”, there’s plenty to keep any friend’s group occupied and happy. And if anyone wants to visit nearby France or Italy, it’s a quick ride away for a day trip.

ANCIENT OLYMPIA, Greece (AP) — Just outside the site of the ancient Olympic Games, hooting owls break the nighttime silence at a white marble monument containing what’s left of a singular Frenchman’s heart.

Baron Pierre de Coubertin was the driving force behind the modern Olympics, and as head of the International Olympic Committee oversaw the last Games to be held in Paris, exactly 100 years ago.

On Tuesday, the flame that will burn at this summer’s Olympics — the French capital’s third — is to be lit among the ruined temples and sports venues of Olympia in southern Greece.

And its first stop on the relay that culminates in the July 26 opening ceremony will be at this cypress-ringed memorial to Coubertin, where the torchbearer will light an altar in his honor.

That happens at every lighting ceremony, but this year it will have a special resonance, according to Spyros Capralos, head of the Greek national Olympic committee.

“We pay respect to the (monument) of Coubertin every time ... the flame goes first there,” Capralos told The Associated Press. “And now, 2,800 years after the first Olympic Games, we are happy that the (Games) are returning to Paris, birthplace of Pierre de Coubertin.”

The French aristocrat’s efforts, inspired by the ancient games and his wish to invigorate a contemporary sports culture, led to the inaugural modern Games being staged in Athens in 1896.

The seat Coubertin used at the renovated ancient marble stadium in the Greek capital is still preserved, with his name carved on it.

Before he died in 1937 and was buried in Lausanne, Switzerland, Coubertin left special directions for his heart: It was to be removed and placed inside the monument erected in his honor ten years earlier just outside the ruins of ancient Olympia.

The future King Paul of Greece performed the ceremony in March 1938, following a blessing by black-robed Greek Orthodox priests. The grove is now part of the International Olympic Academy, an institute established to promote education on the history and principles of the modern Games.

Born in 1863, Coubertin was the second president of the IOC — after Greece’s Demetrios Vikelas — serving from 1896-1925. His tenure included the games held in Paris in 1900 and 1924.

On a personal level, his life was marred by family tragedy that might explain his single-minded dedication to the Olympics. His son suffered severe brain damage at a young age, and his daughter struggled with mental health issues throughout her life.
