Princess Mary is officially in Australia!

princess mary australia visit

Mary, Crown Princess of Denmark , is officially back in Australia.

As confirmed by the Danish palace to Billed Bladet , Mary travelled Down Under with her youngest children – twins Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine, age 12 – on December 6 and plans to visit family while here.

Princess Mary, Prince Frederik and their four children

The palace also confirmed that Frederik, Crown Prince of Denmark , will join his wife in Australia once he’s finished his royal commitments for the year – Frederik is currently at the climate conference, COP 28, in Dubai and will then participate in the Council of State with his mother, Queen Margrethe, on December 12.

Mary and Frederik’s daughter Princess Isabella will also travel to Australia later in December once she’s done with school for the year, but Prince Christian , Mary and Frederik’s eldest child, will not as he’s in his final year of school and needs to study for his upcoming exams.

It’s not yet known whether Mary and the rest of the Crown Prince Family will undertake any formal royal engagements while in Australia or whether the trip is purely a vacation.

Princess Mary in Australia, April 2023

It’s likely the latter; we’re guessing the Danish royals will simply spend time with Mary’s family – her father, Professor John Dalgleish Donaldson, and three siblings, Jane, Patricia and John – before heading back to Aarhus in Denmark to celebrate Christmas Eve at Marselisborg Palace with the Queen.

The last time Mary visited her homeland was in April of this year. The Crown Princess attended a business meeting in Sydney and led a Danish delegation on talks about Australia’s ‘green transition’ and sustainability.

Crown Princess Mary arrives in Australia for private visit delayed due to border closures

By Natalie Oliveri | 2 years ago

Crown Princess Mary has returned to her former homeland for a private visit, arriving in Australia without any fanfare.

The Danish royal, 50, was seen shopping in Brighton, south-east of Melbourne, dropping in to a number of stores.

The Crown Princess was reportedly joined by her friend, and former bridesmaid, Amber Petty for the day out.

A number of residents told local media they saw Princess Mary shopping in Australian retailers including Scanlan and Theodore, where she is believed to have purchased a new coral-coloured two-piece suit.

The royal was later seen having coffee and sitting in the passenger seat of Petty's car.

The Danish royal court has confirmed Princess Mary's visit to Australia, telling Danish magazine Billed Bladet that she has indeed made the journey home.

It is not known whether the Crown Prince, and the couple's children, have joined Mary in Australia this time. However, Prince Frederik has a scheduled event in Denmark on April 4, so it's unlikely he is here.

Mary's last official visit to Australia was in October 2013 when she came back to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Danish-designed Sydney Opera House.

The holiday will be a much needed reunion for the Crown Princess, who has been kept away due to border closures during the coronavirus pandemic.

Although her father, John Donaldson, lives in the UK, many of Mary's other family and friends are based Down Under.

Her visit is expected to be a welcome rest after a very busy few months.

In February the Crown Princess turned 50 with a number of events held across her birthday week, including the opening of two new museum exhibitions dedicated to her life and royal career.

"I think they love that she really is an ordinary girl, she's not born royal,"Høvring told 9Honey.

"She just transcends this kindness, she has a beautiful, smiley, kind nature."

He also praised the Crown Princess for her dedication to fashion sustainability by re-wearing her gowns instead of always buying new.

Princess Mary's children mock her Aussie accent

Australian-born Crown Princess Mary of Denmark is making a whirlwind trip back to her home country for her first official engagement in 10 years.

The Danish royal family has released a statement on its official Instagram account confirming that Mary will visit Australia, Vanuatu and Fiji from April 23 to 28.

WATCH THE VIDEO ABOVE: Princess Mary’s kids mock her Aussie accent.

The visit is to “highlight the consequences of climate change in the Pacific region”, the English translation of the statement reads.

Princess Mary will spend time in Sydney on April 28, where she will participate in an event with Danish business representatives involved in “the green transition in Australia”.

She will also visit a number of projects related to construction and transport.

“Her Royal Highness the Crown Princess will visit ... Vanuatu and Fiji as well as Australia with Minister for Development Cooperation and Global Climate Policy Dan Jørgensen on the 23rd-28 April 2023,” the statement began.

First, Princess Mary will visit Vanuatu on April 23 and 24, going on field visits to crisis responses areas in the wake of recent cyclones and earthquakes.

There, she will “have the opportunity to meet with players who are managing reconstruction projects in the wake of natural disasters”.

Next, the princess will visit Fiji from April 25 to 27.

“Here, the Crown Princess will focus, among other things, on how destruction and evacuations in the wake of climate change cause increased risk of sexual and gender-based violence, and how the health system is working to protect women and girls in vulnerable situations,” the statement continued.

Mary’s final stop will be Sydney on April 28.

Although this is her first visit to Australia in an official capacity in many years, Mary, her husband Crown Prince Frederik and their four children were in the country for Christmas 2022.

She has also visited Australia on personal trips in 2017 and 2015.

On this whirlwind trip, Princess Mary will not have time to visit her family in Tasmania, as she will be heading for London to attend the coronation of King Charles III on May 6.

SYDNEY (AP) — For the first time, Australians find themselves on the brink of witnessing one of their own, Crown Princess Mary of Denmark, rise to the rank of queen when her husband, Crown Prince Frederik, is proclaimed king of that European nation Sunday.

He will become King Frederik X of Denmark two weeks after his 83-year-old mother, Queen Margrethe II, announced she would be the first Danish royal to abdicate in some 900 years .

The 51-year-old Crown Princess Mary’s unlikely journey from Tasmania to European royalty as the world’s first Australian-born queen has captivated Danes and Australians alike for over two decades.

The then Mary Donaldson was 28 years old and working as a real estate agent when her chance meeting with the Danish prince occurred at a Sydney pub during the 2000 Olympics. He was at the Games to support Denmark’s sailing team.

The announcement of their engagement in 2003 marked the beginning of what is considered in Australia a fairytale romance, and her succession to the title of queen consort has many Australians brimming with excitement and anticipation.

Though this is a country that purports to be classless and egalitarian, Australians are reflecting national pride as a fellow Australian transcends geographical, social and cultural boundaries to assume a position of global prominence, even if it has been attained through marrying well.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen speaks during a press conference on strengthening the Armed Forces, at the State Ministry, Christiansborg, in Copenhagen, Wednesday, March 13, 2024. Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said Wednesday the Danish government wants to increase the number of young Danes doing military service by make conscription mandatory for women and by increasing the length of it from the roughly four months to 11 months for both genders. (Liselotte Sabroe/Ritzau Scanpix via AP)

Princess Mary’s ascension potentially also promotes discussion about Australia’s evolving identity at a time when many Australians, including Prime Minister Anthony Albanese , would prefer that the country cut ties with the British monarchy and become a republic with its own head of state.

More tangibly, Princess Mary has played a significant role in connecting Australia with Denmark. For over 20 years, Australians have watched her seamlessly integrate Danish traditions and language into her life while maintaining a strong connection to her Australian roots and visiting her homeland often.

Her commitment to philanthropy, advocating for health, women’s rights and children’s well-being, has further endeared her to Australians.

In Copenhagen, Thomas Larsen, a royal expert compared Mary with the late British Princess Diana.

“I think she has a big heart when it comes to people who are isolated, who are lonely. She wants to reach out to people who need help,” Larsen told The Associated Press.

And in the early hours of Monday morning Australian time, the modern-day fairytale will reach a new high point when Crown Princess Mary becomes the first Australian to become a queen.

____ Associated Press journalist Anders Garde Kongshaug in Copenhagen, Denmark, contributed to this report.

Princess Mary returns to Australia for Christmas without Prince Frederik following allegations he cheated with Mexican socialite

Princess Mary has travelled to Australia for Christmas without her husband of nearly two decades Prince Frederik following an “affair” scandal which rocked the Danish royal family.

Prince Christian of Denmark begins his journey to become the monarch

Princess Mary has returned to Australia without her husband Prince Frederik after he was after he was accused of cheating with a Mexican socialite.

A Danish Royal House spokesperson confirmed to Billed Bladet magazine the Tasmanian-born royal was heading back to Australia to visit her family for Christmas.

The Crown Princess of Denmark, 51, is reportedly accompanied by her two youngest children twins Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine.

On Monday the Danish Royal Family shared a clip of the married couple of 19-years putting on a united front, decorating the Christmas tree with their four children - Prince Christian, 18, Princess Isabella, 16, and the 12-year-old twins.

In the video, Christian is seen on a ladder as Mary hands him decorations to put on top of the tree, before Frederik gets up to do the same.

Rumours began swirling of Frederik's alleged affair in early November, when Lecturas Magazine published photos purporting to show the future King on a date with Genoveva Casanova.

The pair were snapped together in Madrid attending a Pablo Picasso exhibition and later walking in the Spanish capital after reportedly sharing an intimate dinner.

A week later the Spanish magazine published more photos of Frederik it claims capture him leaving the reality TV star’s apartment, the morning after their alleged dinner date.

Frederik is seen in the snaps walking towards a car, which Lecturas alleges was a Danish embassy vehicle which had picked him up from outside the Mexican woman’s apartment and dropped him at the airport.

The former daughter-in-law of the billionaire Duchess of Alba has told Hola! she “categorically” denies the “malicious” rumours the pair have ever had a romantic relationship.

"Any such statement is not only completely untrue but misrepresents the facts in a malicious manner,” Casanova said.

“This is already in the hands of my lawyers, who will take the necessary steps to protect my right to honor, truth and privacy."

Princess Mary and Prince Fredrik are yet to comment on the allegations.

Princess mary's upcoming trip to australia divides: 'hypocritical', the crown princess will arrive in sydney on april 28..

The Danish royal family have just announced that Princess Mary of Denmark will be travelling to Australia in late April. This will be the Hobart-born royal’s first official engagement here for 10 years.

Details about the 51-year-old’s upcoming trip were shared by the official Danish Royal Instagram account on Saturday, revealing that the Crown Princess will first visit Vanuatu and Fiji before arriving in Sydney on April 28.

It is understood that her visit to Australia will be short, as she will be attending King Charles’ coronation in London on May 6.

The main purpose of her visit is to highlight the “consequences of climate change in the Pacific Region”, as well as participate in a ‘green event’ with Danish business representatives in Sydney.

Princess Mary's mysterious absence from Queen's funeral

“Her Royal Highness will participate in an event with Danish business representatives involved in the green transition in Australia, as well as visit a number of Danish-clad projects related to sustainable construction and transport," the statement said.

In the comments, many questioned the royal’s environmental footprint, with Princess Mary visiting three countries in under a week.

“What [is the] CO2 [foot]print for that trip? Kind of crazy to fly so much for five days — and then to talk about the consequences of climate change,” one person pointed out.

“I agree. Lip service at best, hypocritical at worst. Besides, with all due respect, how is it appropriate for the Danish Royal Family to involve themselves in politics? They are not even elected,” another pointed out.

“I really like our Crown Princess, but is it really necessary to fly around the world?” a third asked.

“Could it be possible to meet digitally instead of [her] five day trip, and then abstain from CO2 consumption?” pondered another.

However, there were a slew of fans who defended Princess Mary’s trip, saying her commitment to climate change was encouraging.

“[It’s] significantly more important than using planes to go on holiday,” a royal fan pointed out. “While the Prime Minister is using private planes, the royal [family] is flying with commercial planes.”

“We have a very modern and fantastic Royal House, which manages to put the world situation on the agenda, while preserving traditions,” another added.

“You’re welcome to pop in for a cuppa if you’re free,” an Aussie quipped.

“Hope Mary also gets time to see her family, now that she’s travelled so far and close to home,” another remarked.

But Mary, who worked in advertising at the time, was completely unaware that the man she was talking to was a member of the Danish royal family.

"The first time we met we shook hands. I didn't know he was the prince of Denmark. Half an hour later someone came up to me and said, 'Do you know who these people are'?" she revealed in a 2005 interview about meeting Frederik.

In October 2003, the couple's engagement was announced by the palace.

Mary and Frederik married on 14 May 2004 at Copenhagen Cathedral, with the royal bride wearing a boatneck style gown designed by Danish fashion designer Uffe Frank.

The bride's bouquet included a nod to her home country with Australian eucalyptus.

Mary was also gifted a diamond tiara from her in-laws, Queen Margrethe and the late Prince Henrik.

Joachim's eldest son, Count Felix , will join the family on Christmas Day, but Count Nikolai will be spending Christmas abroad as he is currently studying in Sydney, Australia.

King Frederik and Queen Mary jet off on secret holiday leaving Queen Margrethe as head of state

King Frederik and Queen Mary have jetted off for a secret holiday with their children, leaving Queen Margrethe as head of State.

The King and Queen of Denmark are travelling abroad during their children’s Easter holidays for some rest.

The Danish royals have four children: Crown Prince Christian, 18, Princess Isabella, 16 and twins Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine, 13.

A Palace spokesperson told the Danish publication HerΝ that Queen Margrethe, 83, will act as head of state in the Danish monarch’s absence.

Queen Margrethe, who recently abdicated the throne, will be spending the Easter holidays at Marselisborg Castle in Aarhus.

The Royal Family often head to Jutland and their palace at Aarhus for Easter and Christmas holidays.

The location of the Royal Family’s holiday has been kept under wraps; the only information shared is that they will travel outside of Denmark.

According to HerΝ, the Royal Family is “on a private stay abroad in connection with Easter.”

The family often travel abroad and spent most of December in Australia and one week in mid-February in Switzerland.

King Frederik has spoken about the importance of taking time to rest in his book called The King’s Word.

In the book, he states: “Timeouts are important because we will probably have even more to do.

“Mary and I have areas of interest that will increasingly require our presence in very different forums here at home and abroad.”

There has been no word about when the family will return from their holidays, but according to the royal calendar, Mary has a public engagement at the Freedom Museum on April 3.

The King and Queen of Denmark will be spending time away from their children in the coming months as they undertake their first foreign state tour as Danish monarchs.

The royal couple is expected to travel to their Scandinavian neighbours in May on their first official visit.

The Danish royals will travel to Sweden and Norway to meet with the Nordic monarchs.

The royal palace in Copenhagen announced: “When the King and The Queen travel on their Majesties’ first official state visit to Sweden at the beginning of May, it will, at the same time, kick off a major tour around the Northern region.”

Later in the summer, Frederik and Mary will then travel to two territories of the Danish kingdom, the Faroe Islands and Greenland.

When the King travelled to Poland in January, Prince Christian, Denmark’s 18-year-old heir, stepped up as head of state instead of his mother, Queen Mary.

The King and Queen’s eldest son took on the role ahead of Mary as he is “deputy regency” and so the role fell to him first.
