  • Full weekly service expected to commence late April 2024

In the wake of ex-tropical cyclone Jasper, the Kuranda Range rail line faced substantial damage, including major track washouts, significant landslips, uprooted trees, and debris blocking the tracks at 61 different locations along the range. Despite the challenges, Queensland Rail's dedicated crews have been working diligently, prioritizing safety and speed to restore services.

We are pleased to report significant progress in this restoration effort, with 39 out of the 61 damaged sites now cleared.

Starting from late February, services will resume on weekends only. This strategic approach will provide our hardworking crews access to the rail track from Monday to Friday, enabling them to continue fortifying the rail corridor against future extreme weather events.

We anticipate completing our long-term restoration works by late April, which will allow us to return to our regular timetable. Rest assured that we will keep you informed of our progress, especially in the event that recovery efforts face setbacks due to heavy rain or other severe weather conditions.

Kuranda Station

Kuranda Train Station

Kuranda Station is one of the earliest stations to be built in Australia using standard concrete units and is the oldest remaining examples of its type in Queensland. Described as “after the style of a Swiss Chalet, the idea being to make Kuranda a show station”, the station was designed in 1910. A modified version of the design was built in 1914 and included the Passenger Station building, Signal Cabin and Utilities Block.

Ornamental planting proposed in the 1910 scheme, was developed by George Wriede and Bert Wickham, both station masters at Kuranda. Today Kuranda Station is world renowned for its tropical gardens and historic significance. It is possibly one of the most photographed railway stations in the world. The heritage-listed buildings blend with the tropical surrounds providing a relaxed environment to enjoy. The Kuranda Railway Tea Rooms at the station offer a great range of souvenirs and refreshments.

Markets In Kuranda Village

Kuranda Markets

Kuranda Original Markets Kuranda Original Markets had their humble beginnings in 1978 organised by a group of locals to attract visitors to Kuranda and see their hand made arts, crafts and local produce. The original marketeers had to operate their own train service for two seasons, to prove commercial viability of the service to the Queensland Railway Department.

Today the markets are an established icon, operating 7 days a week and proving a huge success with providing employment for local artists and makers as well as raising the profile of Kuranda, which is now recognised as a unique Australian Rainforest tourist destination. The Original Markets has retained it’s atmosphere, with many local artists and personalities making the market part of their lifestyle. Many of the current marketeers have been involved in the markets during the course of the last 25 – 30 years.

This market also has a strong eco-conscious ethic with organic, recycled, natural, holistic and remedial products available here. Crafts people still flock to this mountain top oasis to display their beautifully hand crafted wares. Renovated in 2005, this market has lost none of it’s rustic charm, featuring tropical gardens, mini-golf in the rainforest, gourmet regional fare, and contemporary arts and crafts. History of Kuranda Scenic Rail It was in 1882 that the miners of Herberton were on the brink of total starvation, unable to get supplies due to flooding. A route to civilisation was desperately needed for the purpose of meeting ships at the port, to deliver goods to the city and towns to the west, and more importantly to bring back the spoils of the hinterland particularly tin, timber, small amounts of gold and subsequently sugar, tobacco, copper and lead. Adventure bushman and colourful pioneer, Christie Palmerston, was charged with finding a starting point for a railway. The Premier Sir Samuel Griffiths turned the first sod for the line which was to be built in three stages.

Men tackled the jungle and mountains not with bulldozers, jackhammers and other modern equipment, but with strategy, fortitude, hand tools, dynamite, buckets and bare hands. Great escarpments were removed from the mountains above the line and every loose rock and overhanging tree had to be removed by hand. After removing 2.3 million metres of earthworks, creating 15 tunnels, 93 curves, dozens of bridges and 75 kilometres of track, a banquet high up on the bridge with General Sir Henry Wiley Norman, Governer of Queensland marked the completion of Stoney Creek Bridge.

On June 15th 1891, Mr Johnstone, one of three Railway Commissioners at that time opened the line for goods traffic only. Just ten days later, the Cairns- Kuranda Railway line was opened to passenger travel. The original Kuranda Scenic Railway is truly a legendary demonstration of man’s ingenuity and nature’s wonder. The 34km Kuranda Scenic Railway was, and still is considered a remarkable engineering feat of tremendous magnitude.

Kuranda Train & Skyrail Faq

Kuranda FAQ

Where is Skyrail located? Skyrail Terminal is located a 15 minute drive north of Cairns city and 50 minutes south of Port Douglas.

How long does Skyrail take? We suggest you allow 1.5 hours to complete a one-way journey on Skyrail. This includes ample time to explore the two mid-stations.

How long does the Kuranda Train journey take? The train takes 1.5 hours between Freshwater Connection and Kuranda.

How many hours should I spend in Kuranda? Most visitors spend three hours in Kuranda. It is possible to opt for no time, up to five hours free time. We suggest three hours. This gives you enough time to have a good look around and have some lunch.

What is there to do in Kuranda? The main attraction in Kuranda is the Original Kuranda Markets. There are also Heritage Markets, Boutiques, Art Galleries and Cafes. As well as shopping there are wildlife attractions including Birdworld, The Butterfly Sanctuary and Koala Gardens. It is possible to pay for these on entry or pre-purchase a three park pass at a discounted rate. Kuranda also has a river boat cruise, and a pretty river walk. Rainforestation is near Kuranda and a visit is often combined in a Kuranda package. This activity park a 5-minute drive outside Kuranda and is most known for the Army Duck ride among other activities.

Why do most tours include Freshwater Connection railway station? Freshwater Connection is a 15-minute drive from Cairns City and is a pretty railway station in a semi-rural setting with a small museum and a coffee shop inside a train carriage. This is a much prettier station to start your day. Cairns Central Station is simply a city train station without character. The Kuranda Train sets off from Cairns Central Station, then stops at Freshwater Connection to pick-up passengers before heading up the mountain.

Is it better to take the train up to Kuranda and Skyrail down, or in reverse? We prefer to recommend the train up to Kuranda in the morning and the Skyrail down the mountain in the afternoon. Freshwater Connection is more lively in the morning with atmosphere, the train is cooler in the morning as it is heritage and not air-conditioned it can get very warm in the afternoon. Skyrail is pretty either way but it is very nice seeing the view of the Coral Sea open up as you come over the mountain. Answer: Train up, Skyrail down

Do the tours including Train and Skyrail include return hotel transfers from all hotels in the Cairns area? Yes. The only area where transfers are not offered are residential beach suburbs such as Holloways and Machans Beach. Transfers are included from Yorkey’s Knob on cruise ship days but not on any other days.

Will the bus pick us up from our Airbnb address? It depends on the address. If you’re staying in a holiday apartment it is likely a pick-up will be offered however if you’re staying in a residential area we will locate the closest hotel as your pick up location.

We have our own car. Do we still need a transfer? Yes, Skyrail Station and Freshwater Connection Railway Station are not in the same location. You will require a one-way transfer. Please book the self-drive option.

We suggest the above option in this listing, where you drive to Skyrail in the morning, park your car free for the day, meet the coach driver who takes you to Freshwater Connection, go up on the train, have free time, come down on the Skyrail and jump in your car and drive back to your hotel. This way, there is no waiting at the end of the day.

Can we do a self-drive tour including the Train and Skyrail from Port Douglas? Yes, sure. The self-drive tour is the same for guests staying in Cairns or Port Douglas.

Do you have pensioner/senior rates? Yes, however these rates are not available to book on this instant booking page. Please contact [email protected] with your enquiry including preferred date, number of people and if you need transfers and we will respond with a quote. You will need to provide your seniors card on the day of travel.

Is it easy to walk to the main village of Kuranda from the Skyrail and Kuranda Train stations? Yes, the station is at the bottom of the village. It is an easy walk to the top of the village however there is a courtesy (free) shuttle bus to carry visitors to the top of the village where the markets are located. This shuttle runs every 15 minutes until 2.50pm.

Is it possible to take a pram or wheelchair on this tour? Yes, prams are no problem. Please let us know when booking if you have a wheelchair as we will need to make arrangements for the correct carriage with the wheelchair lift for the train and advise Skyrail.

We are on a cruise ship and would like to know if it’s possible do the Train and Skyrail? Yes. We access current cruise ship timetables and book many cruise ship passengers on this tour. Please email [email protected] with your cruise ship arrival date, number of people travelling and name of ship. We will make sure the timings fit with your cruise ship schedule and send a correct quote. Cruise ships arrive into Cairns Port and Yorkey's Knob by tender.

If we are on a cruise ship and the ship or tender cannot make it into port due to weather will we receive a refund? Yes, we refund the total when the ship is unable to berth or transfer vessels are unable to provide transfers.

We want to ride in the Army Duck? Rainforestation is a 5-minute drive outside Kuranda. Army Ducks (amphibious vehicle) from World War II have been restored and guests are offered a ride through the rainforest and then into a small lake. Tours that include the Army Duck will also include the coach to get to Rainforestation. Visitors who prefer an all-inclusive daytrip to Kuranda can also learn about indigenous culture and watch a dance performance, see a number of native animals and have lunch at Rainforestation. Tour packages include the Army Duck and coach transfers right through to all-inclusive day tours.

Can we start the tour in Kuranda? No. The Kuranda Train departs Kuranda at 2pm and 3.30pm. The 2pm Train from Kuranda would arrive at Freshwater Connection at 3.30pm. Skyrail is a 10 minute drive from here. The last Skyrail departs at 3.45pm. The timing is too tight and this direction does not make sense.

When does Gold Class train run? The Gold Class carriage is on the 9.50am Freshwater Connection departure. And, the 3.30pm Kuranda departure. If you would like Gold Class please book well in advance as there are limited seats.

How often does Skyrail run the Diamond View gondola? Diamond view has very limited availability. The Diamond view gondola has a clear floor and is an optional upgrade. The carriage comes every 15 minutes and can seat up to 5 guests.

Are there toilets on the train? Yes, there are toilets on every carriage.

Rainforestation Army Duck Tour

This tour has to be one of the most unique ways to visit the rainforest of this World Heritage Site. Your tour vehicle is an historic World War II amphibious army vehicle that’s nicknamed a “Duck”.

Your Army Duck tour vehicle is the perfect way to explore this World Heritage rainforest with its combination of 6 wheels, a rudder and a propeller, it is just as at home on land as it is on water.  Your journey of rainforest discovery will take about 45 minutes to 1 hour.  You will be taken into the depths of this pristine ancient rainforest whilst your driver and tour guide will keep you informed about all the amazing scenery that you are passing through. The flora and fauna that you are passing through belongs to the oldest surviving rainforest in the world and dates back to over 150 million years ago.

This World Heritage site, despite only taking up 0.1% of the total land mass of Australia, has an amazing diversity of animals and insects. It boasts an amazing 3% of reptiles, frogs and marsupials, 7% of bird species, 90% of bats and butterflies and around 12,000 types of insects in this pristine rainforest area.

With only a press of a button the propeller will be lowered on your unique Army Duck tour vehicle and you will be gently cruising along the rainforest creek exploring the river banks.  Look out for a basking turtle, a sunning python, fish and eels.

Information on your amphibious tour ”Army Duck” vehicle

Rainforestation has a fleet of 12 Army Duck vehicles. These were constructed in Detroit as a military vehicle for World War II between 1942 and 1944. They should rightly be called “Dukw” but “Duck” is the nickname that stuck.  Each of the letters denotes a meaning.  “D” indicates that it was designed in 1942, the “U” shows that it is a utility vehicle, the “K”means that it is an all-wheel drive and “W” indicates that it has two powered rear axles.

Although initially developed for military use its flexible use has meant that civilian organisations also found them indispensable and as such they are also used by rescue, fire and police departments. The Australian Army even loaned their Ducks to the Australian National Antarctic Research Expedition. They are used locally in Cape York to help in supplying remote islands and lighthouses.

Many Ducks have also been used for disaster relief work. They were used post Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans and also for the Hunter Valley Floods in Australia.

Each Duck tour vehicle is 93m (31ft) long and can accommodate 30 passengers. They are constructed out of steel and have the wonderful combination of having 6 wheels together with a propeller and a rudder. The Rainforestation Duck tour vehicle fleet run on LPG. They incorporate some unique engineering features which includes a high capacity bilge system and driver adjustable tyre pressures that can be deflated or inflated when needed.

After your Army Duck rainforest tour you can then decide what to do next:

  • Catch the transfer tour bus at 1:00pm to Kuranda where you can go shopping, see some other attractions, such the Australian Butterfly Sanctuary , and have lunch in one of the restaurants or cafes in Kuranda.
  • You can choose to have lunch at Rainforestation and catch the tour bus at 2:00pm to take you to the Kuranda Village  where you will get half an hour to look around before making your way to the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway terminal.

Lunch (optional extra cost)

Which restaurants are open and table availability will be dependent on the demand on the day.

Rainforestation has three restaurant areas:

  • Treehouse Restaurant, where you can dine under shady fig trees and the children can play in the Woodies Treehouse (if this restaurant is closed then the treehouse is still open and children can play here with adult supervision).
  • Colonial Restaurant, with its old world charm, which has amazing views across the lake.
  • Outback Restaurant is surrounded by landscaped tropical gardens. The food served (for all restaurant areas) is based on delicious Aussie bush-tucker. A yummy mixed grill with tender steaks, pork sausages and BBQ kitchen. An accompanying delicious signature dish served is the traditional Kup-Murri made from sweet potatoes.Vegetarians are catered for with sandwiches, stir-fries, salads, snacks and cheeses. There are vegetarian options which include stir-fries, tropical fruits, sandwiches, salads, snacks and cheeses.

Kuranda Village – “the village in the rainforest”

Kuranda really is a jewel of place set like an emerald in the crown surrounded by the natural beauty of the rainforest. This quaint village has a relaxed vibe and creative feel and has attracted visitors for good reason for over a century. Known for its wonderful quirkiness you will wander around the streets with their wonderfully sculpted metal street furnishings and browse through the amazing variety of wares being sold. There are two markets, which are filled with wonderful items to buy as souvenirs and gifts. From the multi-coloured Australian opals to indigenous artefacts of hand crafted boomerangs and digeridoos to crocodile skins and Crocodile Dundee hats. There is beautiful jewellery, a large selection of clothes, many hand-made and items to decorate your home.

Your tour coach will bring you here at 1:00pm if you want lunch in Kuranda. If you are lunching at Rainforestation then the tour bus will transfer you to Kuranda at 2:00pm.

Depending which transfer you decide to take you will have approximately one hour and fifteen, or half an hour to explore.

For those not lunching in Kuranda you will have time to explore these other attractions (extra cost).

  • Butterfly Sanctuary

If you love butterflies then why not visit the largest collection of them in Australia? The Kuranda Australian Butterfly Sanctuary is home to 2,000 butterflies under a massive enclosure. With an astounding 60% of all butterfly species found in this pristine World Heritage rainforest its fitting that the Butterfly Sanctuary is located here.  As you walk around keep an eye out for the electric blue of a flitting Ulysses Butterfly, the unofficial emblem of the area in North Queensland or the fluoro green of the local butterfly named aptly Cairns Birds Wing.  If you are wearing pink, white or red colours, you might have them land on you thinking that you are a big walking flower.

This World Heritage rainforest area has an amazing amount of biodiversity. This small area contains 7% of the total bird species in Australia. At Bird World, Kuranda you can view 45 species of tropical birds, from the massive 1.8 m (6ft) rare Cassowary bird to the cheeky rainbow lorikeets to Galahs and the brilliant Amazonian Macaws. All are housed under a massive landscaped enclosure with a waterfall, ponds and trees.

  • Kuranda Riverboat Cruise

This is a perfect trip to take if you don’t want to do much except soak up the beauty of your surroundings. The scenery will come to you as you tour around the river banks of the Barron River on your tour cruise boat. Marvel at the majestic trees of the rainforest, and on the banks lookout for a basking wild crocodile, a languid turtle, water dragons or a drying Darter Bird with their wings outspread.

  • Kuranda Markets

Kuranda markets are known to the world for their eclectic wares and range of unique goods.

Kuranda is known locally as a bohemian place where artists and artisans have resided since over a century ago.

The Kuranda markets have been so successful that they now have two! Find a unique souvenir or a just find a treat for yourself, something for the house, or just something to wear.

You can sip coffee made from local coffee beans from the nearby Tablelands or refresh yourself with a drink of freshly made coconut juice from local coconuts.

At 2:25pm you will start walking to Kuranda Skyrail Station which is only a 5 minute walk to arrive at 2:30pm.

Skyrail Rainforest Cableway

Skyrail Rainforest Cableway, Cairns, Australia is one of the world’s foremost environmental award winning experiences located in the World Heritage listed tropical rainforest, Kuranda. It has been voted Australia’s Best Major Tourist Attraction and has scooped many tourism awards.

Your amazing cableway journey will take you over 7.5 kms of pristine World Heritage tropical rainforest canopy. You will glide in your gondola like a bird only metres above one of the most diverse areas in the world.

You will descend from Kuranda at an elevation of 328m (1076ft) back to the lowlands. Your view as you descend will have panoramic views across the Coral Sea to the Great Barrier reef.

This is the only place in the world where the rainforest meets the reef so you will be seeing it from a bird’s eye view.

Along the way there are two stations where you can stop off and admire the view.

  • Red Peak Station, Kuranda Skyrail

After 10 minutes you will reach this stop off station.

The Red Peak Station is at an elevation of 545m (1788ft) above sea level with stunning views.

At this Skyrail station there is a 175m (574ft) boardwalk that will take you along the base of the rainforest trees and chance for you to look up, not down. You cannot but be impressed by the sheer magnitude and splendour of nature as ancient rainforest trees tower over you.

At this stop off you have the opportunity to join a complimentary guided tour. Your tour guide rangers are happy to answer any questions and to give you information in a fun and easy-to-understand way. Your tour guide will show you rare flora and fauna showing you some species that are so so rare that they are only found in this rainforest pocket.

When you have finished at this station just pick up the next Skyrail gondola to the next Skyrail Station.

  • Barron Falls Station, Kuranda Skyrail

The Barron Falls Station, is set at an elevation of 125m (410 ft) and located above the Barron Gorge with stunning, dramatic views across the amazing gushing waters of the Barron Falls.

As you look down into the steep granite sides of the Barron Gorge with the thick rainforest lushly framing it. This stunning scenery will take your breath away.

This Barron Falls Station has three separate lookout areas. These are not for the faint hearted as they are located at the top of the Barron Gorge cliffs. You have ring-side viewing of the Barron Falls and in Green Season from December to March this is a dramatic torrent of gushing water crashing to the depths below.  The water spray will settle on your hair on nose and you can almost inhale the freshness of the amazing scenery. A total sensory experience.

You will arrive at the base station at Smithfield, Cairns at 4:30pm where you will be met by your tour bus. You will then be taken back to your Cairns accommodation or to your car at Freshwater Station. You will be back for around 5:00pm.

Upgrades Available on Skyrail

  • LetsGooooooo 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Good execution -- but marketing department unethical The tour was well-executed, with buses clean, drivers courteous, etc. I give the operations staff 5 stars. The problem I had with them was that they use 3rd party sites to advertise their tours and offer discounts if you use the discount codes that they offer there, BUT they do an inadequate job of actually letting you book with the codes. (!) In other words, they say that the code can be used on "some" of their tours but when you go to book, all of the tours are presented without discriminating between the eligible and ineligible tours. And if you try to apply the code, nothing happens: no discount, no error message. In my case, I spoke to a phone rep and trusted them to retroactively apply the credit. But no. This sort of "baiting the customer" is poor form, and I do hope others out there will be vigilant. Read more Written February 14, 2024

Tropic Wings quickly pivoted and reconstituted the excursion to include Daintree, the Mossman Gorge, and the Wildlife Habitat at Port Douglas. All in all, it was a delightful day,. We got to see so many animals up close including a koala and also kangaroos (which are so friendly you can pet them). We also got to meet an indigenous man which was so interesting to hear about his life. The rainforest was very beautiful and you could take a lovely refreshing dip in the river here. Lastly we got to see wild crocodiles on a boat ride. 100% would recommend this tour. Lisa, our guide, was amazing. She was so considerate to all the guests on the tour and was so engaging. She provided lots of information and encouraged us to ask any questions we wanted. Thank you so much Lisa for making our day so special. Read more Written February 6, 2024

  • 304pearlm 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Recommend this tour company Thoroughly enjoyed this tour - lots of variety. Especially the Skyrail - spectacular views of Barron Falls and the wildlife park at Kuranda Village. In particular, we appreciated the professionalism of this tour company — advising us early that the recent cyclone in the Cairns area had damaged the railway tracks making the scenic Kuranda Railway train inoperable. They offered us a partial refund and a coach ride in lieu of the train portion of the tour. They even routinely kept us informed over the weeks and days leading up to our tour on whether other unforeseen impacts from the cyclone or lack of a minimum number of participants would impact the tour further. We appreciated this courtesy and professionalism. Read more Written January 28, 2024

Did see a few lovely butterflies which we might not otherwise have seen. Relatively expensive compared with other trips. Okay if money is not an issue. Read more Written January 25, 2024
