Welcome to Bandipur Tiger Reserve Park!

This National Park was formed by including most of the forest areas of the then Venugopala Wildlife Park established under Govt. Notification dated 19th February 1941 and the area was enlarged in 1985 extending over an area of 874.20 Sq.Km and named as Bandipur National Park.

This reserve was brought under Project Tiger in 1973. Subsequently some adjacent reserve forest areas were added to the reserve and extending to 880.02 Sq. Km. The present area under the control of Bandipur Tiger Reserve is 912.04 Sq. Km.

An area of 39.80 Sq. Km of KFDC plantation area was handed over to this division during 2007-08. During 2010-11 the Nugu Wildlife Sanctuary was handed over to Wildlife Division, Mysore.

Is it necessary to book safari online? or we can arrange our tickets on the day itself? Can we book open jeeps at Bandipur rather than the buses? Is Vanashree not a Government lodge? How to book a Government lodge then?

The vanasree is a Forest dept lodge and can be booked on-line. Concerning the safari, You can book at the counter and for the open jeep that costs @ rs.2000/- + Rs. 200/person. for upto 6 persons. Ther is an option of a gypsy too that seats 5 and costs 4000/- All these bookings are to be done at the counter alone. When are you planning to visit the place? Any ways have a good sighting, all the best.

How book online bandipur safari

As of today, 7th Jan 2020, their cottage and safari booking website has some issues, selecting the time slot pull-down menu and age pull-down menu. I tried to contact in all the contact numbers provided, from top-end to bottom-end, and unfortunately, none of the numbers are in working order. Pathetic...!

Hi ! I would like to stay in Forest Department accomodation as I heard it was cheap and in the middle of the forest. Im wondering if that's possible to stay there and book a jeep safari because I don't want to take the bus. Thanks :-)

At Bandipur the cottage booking has to be made online. You can try for safari by visiting the ricket counter at the Forest Office in the park. However booking safari online is suggestable as there is limited trips and limited seats in the vehicle.

Open jeeps are not allowed. You need to travel by the mimi buses of forest department for safari.

Booking online will ensure early availability of the vehicle. Else, on the day of your trip, if there are lot many people visiting bandipur, you will have to wait in queue.

And as I remember, there are only 2 jeeps available as most people opt for bus for its economy.

Alternatively, some of the resorts have their own jeeps or have tie up with forest department and book for guests, if informed in advance. However, the service is provided at 20-30% premium compared to what forest department directly provides.

there are a few lodges whicha re around 5 to 8 KM away from the main Bandipur forest area. But the fun is in staying at Bandipur. you will be surrounded by deers and monkeys all the time. that's the best part,

Book the lodges well in advance (vanashree is not good) try to Gajendra or Kokila (If its available). rooms are very very basic. do not expect any luxury in the jungle :)

Government s can be booked online. infact, its better to book these rooms online and well in advance. (don't think of getting a room if you walk-in without any bookings).

for safari: You can buy tickets once you reach there. the ticket counter opens 30 minutes before the safari time.. early morning trip is advisable :)

Jeep / gypsy is anyday better than bus trip. We tried both. I vote for Jeep safari :) have fun. keep your camera charged and ready at all times :)

Hello, we also didnt book any safari online. We went there in the morning and booked the tickets from the counter. You can book for either open jeeps or small buses. Its on first come first serve as the open jeeps are less in number but mind you it costs more. We went from mysore so not sure on the government lodge details.

There are couple of resort kind just few kms from the bandipur main entrance to the safari. Few people stay there but heard not so good.

How to Get to Bandipur National Park?

The closest airport to Bandipur National Park is located in Mysore . Mandakalli Airport, a domestic terminal, facilitates flights from various destinations, including seven flights serviced by Air India. From the airport, approximately 80 kilometres away, visitors can commute to Bandipur National Park via taxi or local bus.

Bandipur National Park lies merely 80 kilometres away from Mysore, offering a convenient road trip lasting approximately an hour and a half to two hours. The route includes toll roads for a smooth journey.

From Bangalore , the park is situated approximately 220 kilometres away, with a road journey spanning around four and a half hours. The route heads towards Mysore, providing scenic views along the way.

For travellers heading to Ooty , Bandipur National Park is an excellent stopover, adding a touch of wildlife adventure.

By Public Transport

To access Bandipur National Park via public transportation, several options are available:

From Bangalore : Catch a KSRTC bus from the Majestic bus stop to Mysore, then transfer to a bus heading to Bandipur National Park. Many buses en route to Ooty make stops at the park. The journey covers approximately 80 kilometres and takes around two hours.
Direct Bus from Bangalore to Ooty : Opt for a direct bus service from Bangalore to Ooty, including a stop at Bandipur National Park. This eliminates the need for transfers or stops at Mysore.
Train and Bus Combo : Board a train from Bangalore to Mysore and hop on a bus bound for Bandipur National Park. Train schedules and availability can be checked on the IRCTC website for convenience.

Please note that payment for local bus fares must be made in cash only.

Things To Do in Bandipur National Park

Visit himavad gopalaswamy betta.

The pinnacle of Bandipur National Park is marked by the majestic Himavad Gopalaswamy Betta, where a revered Hindu temple resides atop the hill. Visitors can conveniently park their vehicles at the hill’s base and ascend to the temple via a KSRTC bus service. The fare per person is approximately INR 20, with temple visitation hours from 8 AM to 4 PM.

For safety reasons, visitors are not permitted to stay atop the hill near the temple beyond the designated closing hours due to wild animals in the vicinity.

Jeep Safari, including Bandipur National Park Safari Timings

The top activity to experience at Bandipur National Park undoubtedly involves embarking on a safari adventure. These safaris operate daily, offering two sessions: 6:30 AM to 9 AM and 3:30 PM to 5:30 PM, typically lasting for about an hour each. The morning safari is often favoured for its optimal viewing conditions.

Note: Presently, Elephant safari is not allowed at Bandipur National Park due to commercial activity. Ooty and Bandipur: Detailed Itinerary and Trip Report

Ooty has spectacular lakes, scenic viewpoints, beautiful tea estates and a picturesque toy train ride from Ooty to Coonoor. We spent 3 days exploring everything that Ooty has to offer. After exploring Ooty, we spent 2 days in the Bandipur National Park. It is a Tiger Reserve where actually tigers are frequently spotted. However, the safari vehicle could have been much better for the price they charge. Also, I guess the experience depends on the guide as we got a really bad driver/guide on one of our safaris.

Day 4 – Kodaikanal to Ooty (252 Km, 7 hrs)

We drove from Kodaikanal and reached Ooty by 7 pm.

We stayed at the Taj Savoy Hotel Ooty and it turned out to be a good choice. Rooms were huge, had a big King size bed, a separate area for luggage and an awkwardly shaped marble bathroom. It even had a verandah with a sitting place. Only con was that it was difficult to open the curtains and being cold we even could not open the windows. So in spite of having a garden view, we could not see any view from the room. We ordered room service a couple of times and everything was delicious. The service was top-notch too.

Day 5 – Ooty – Upper Bhavani Lake, Avalanche Lake & Emerald Lake

Time – 10 am to 4 pm

Today we explored Avalanche Lake and Emerald lake which is not there on most people’s itinerary.

Viewpoint (Few km from Ooty)

This was a random viewpoint en route to Emerald Lake.
The panoramic view from here was mind-blowing. Definitely one of our favourite viewpoints.
If you don’t have time to travel all the way to Emerald Lake, at least visit this for gorgeous vistas.
It doesn’t have any name.

Emerald Lake (20 km, 50 min from Ooty)

Emerald Lake is a short detour en route to Avalanche Lake.
It was a beautiful green lake with not a single soul around.
This was our favourite spot of the day and would highly recommend visiting it.
However, unlike Avalanche lake, for which the best views are available only after the bus tour, the beauty of Emerald Lake is visible from easily accessible viewpoints.

It is yet another beautiful lake in this area.
It is the point from where the bus departs for Upper Bhavani Lake.
Just a quick photo stop.
There is a small cafe and probably the best place to eat in this area.

How to get to Upper Bhavani Lake

First, get to Avalanche lake. The GPS will take you to the outskirt of Avalanche Lake and then travel to Tamil Nadu Eco-tourism office which is about 4 km inside the jungle.
From Avalanche lake, you have to take the Forest Dept. Bus (Rs. 200 per person) or their jeep (Rs. 2000 with max 8 person allowed).
The ticket counter opens at 9:00 am.
During the season time, there is a heavy rush and it is better to arrive early.
Once there are enough people for the bus or the jeep tour, it departs. You can also book a private jeep by paying Rs. 2000.
Each ride is for approximately 2 hours.

Upper Bhavani lake

There are 3 points – Cauliflower Forest, Bhavani Temple and the Upper Bhavani Lake.
The bus or jeep waits for 10-15 minutes on every spot so that you can enjoy nature to the fullest. With jeep, stop timings are flexible as per your wish.
Since it wasn’t a busy season we had no problems getting a bus or a jeep. We chose the jeep as it was more comfortable.
It was a good 2 hour trip with three viewpoints.
However, the Upper Bhavani Lake wasn’t much different from the Emerald Lake.

After visiting all the lakes, we started our drive back to Ooty.

We visited in winter, therefore it wasn’t in full bloom.
It was good to wander around for half an hour.

We didn’t have breakfast, so by now we were starving and went for lunch at Hyderabad Biryani House. The biryani was served with salan. We ordered the smallest size and still, the portion size was huge. In all, a good place to have biryani and Indian food in Ooty.

Dad was not feeling too well, so we called it a day. Else we had plans to visit some more sightseeing spots. For dinner, we stuck to the room service.

Day 6 – Ooty and Coonoor

Time – 8:45 am to 7 pm

It was an hour-long journey. We booked the morning train departing at 9:15 am and reaching Coonoor at 10:25 am.
We were a bit sceptical about whether to do this or not as we didn’t like the toy train in Darjeeling. However, this turned out to be an amazing experience. I wouldn’t miss it for anything.
It offered stunning views all along the journey.
Book first-class tickets on the IRCTC website as soon as possible as seats are very limited.
The right side has better views though you don’t have an option to select seats.
Ask the driver to meet you at Coonoor so you can see Coonoor before proceeding back to Ooty.
At Coonoor station, we had a delicious breakfast of idli. Surprisingly, it was so good that we kept going back and buying more of it.

Dolphin’s Nose (12 Km, 40 min from the station)

The drive was gorgeous surrounded by tea gardens.
From here, you can see a cute waterfall and enjoy the valley view.
When we reached we could see the tiny waterfall and within minutes it was all covered in fog. We waited for a while, but unfortunately, it didn’t reveal the panorama again.
Beware of monkeys here. They are very mischievous and will attack anything looking like food. Kapil who is most afraid of monkeys was attacked by one of them. He screamed, jumped and ran from there. It was so hilarious that everyone around had a good laugh. Unfortunately, I missed capturing it on my camera.

Lamb Rock ( 7 Km, 18 min)

It is yet another viewpoint.
Be careful about the so-called guides who charge around Rs. 300 to take you on a tour of the viewpoint. Just go on your own and enjoy the viewpoint.
One needs to climb some stairs to reach the actual viewpoint. On the way, there is a homemade chocolate and oil factory.
When we were there, it was all covered in fog, so we didn’t make an effort to climb to the top.
This place had a vendor selling hot bhajias which was finger-licking good. He was so busy that he was out of stock in no time. We also had hot corn and fresh lime soda here.
Again, beware of monkeys here.

During the drive, we passed through various tea factories and eucalyptus oil factories. You can stop for a visit if interested. We have been to quite a few tea factories, so we didn’t waste time as we had a lot of places to visit today. If interested can visit Brooklands Tea Estate or Highfield Tea Factory.

Along the road, you can also stop to click a picture in the tea estate wearing the local costume.

Sim’s Park (6 Km, 20 min)

It is a well maintained beautiful garden.
We did a small walk around it, saw some trees and flowers.

Ketti Valley View (17 Km, 40 min)

This is a viewpoint located en-route on Coonoor to Ooty.
Unfortunately, we could not see anything due to the fog.

Doddabetta Peak (10 km, 32 min from Ketti Valley View)

It is about 40 minutes ride from Ooty to this peak.
It is the highest peak in that region.
Fortunately, the weather had cleared by now and we saw excellent views from here.

Doddabetta Tea Museum and Chocolate Factory (4.5 Km, 20 min)

It is on the way to Doddabetta Peak.
After visiting Doddabetta Peak, we had some time to spare, so stopped here.
In terms of the museum, it is very disappointing. Just a few posters and some machines running. No one really to show you around.
But views from this place was as good if not better as the views from Doddabetta Peak.
It is mainly geared towards getting tourists in and selling them chocolates, tea, oil and spices.
It is spread over 4 floors, so we made sure our driver dropped us at the top and hence we had to just walk down.
This place has a full commission system which I haven’t seen anywhere. The driver will make a hard push for this place, our driver was a nice guy, so instead of pushing he just asked us if we want to visit. Then he will give you tags. At each place you shop, they will ask for the tag and scan that. After the visit, the driver will ask for the tags and will go and collect his commission. We definitely knew about the commission thing, but still gave it a try.
We tasted the tea and mom loved it so much that we landed up buying 2 packets. Chocolates were tasty and had a huge variety. We bought a couple of different types to take home.

Botanical Gardens (3 km, 10 min)

It is more of a picnic stop with a large lawn area.
Gardens are huge which requires a lot of walking.
You can visit the greenhouse and see some beautiful trees, flowers and sculptures.

Thread Garden – next to the Ooty lake

Here, all the flowers and plants are made with thread, canvas and wires. No needle is used in the process.
50 physically challenged girls created this garden in 12 yrs.
It is a unique and must-visit place.

Ooty Lake (4 Km, 14 min)

There are different boats available for boating, we chose the motorboat. It was fun boating around the lake with some pretty views.
Apart from boating, there were lots of fun activities available like pistol shooting, 4D show, mini-train ride etc.
We were too tired, else we could have easily spend a few more hours here.

For dinner, we chose Nahar Restaurant which serves South Indian food. This was the only place we found on our trip where you get idli for lunch and dinner. Else, at every other place, it was available only for breakfast. We had idli, dosa, channa-bhatura, paratha-korma and appam with stew. The food was good but not great.

Day 7 – Ooty to Bandipur

Time – 10 am to 7 pm

This was newly opened and we saw this a couple of times while going from our hotel to sightseeing places.
Dad loves these kinds of places and forced us to visit.
Surprisingly, it was really well made and we were amazed by the exhibits.
Entry fees of Rs. 200 felt a bit expensive but it was totally worth it.

This is one of the oldest churches, dates back to the 19th century.

It was en-route to Pykara Lake.
It had a very steep climb to reach the viewpoint. Hence, we skipped it.

The first stop is the Pykara Dam, which is 5 km before the lake on the main highway. Unfortunately, the guard there started screaming at me and didn’t even let me click a good picture from the dam.
Pykara Falls – This is the main spot and should not be missed. For reaching the falls, you can take an electric car to the approached road and then need to walk down 60 to 70 steps. Once you reach, the spectacular falls are seen. The climb back was a bit tough in the scorching sun for us.
The last stop is the Pykara Boat House, where you can do boating. It had quite a few stairs to reach the lake. We were tired, therefore skipped boating and just admired the views from the top.

Drive to Bandipur

We continued our drive through the forest. First, we passed through Mudumalai National Park which is on the Tamil Nadu side. Tamil Nadu Govt. runs safari here, but it can’t be pre-booked. Hence, we chose the Bandipur safari which is run by the Karnataka Govt. We spotted elephants, peacocks and monkeys just along the road to Bandipur.

Bandipur National Park Safari

We had pre-booked a private jeep safari online on its official website from 5:00 pm to 6:30 pm.
Be at the ticket counter 20-30 min to get their tickets.
We reached here quite early at 4 pm.
Our guide/driver turned out to be very bad. He drove like he had a flight to catch, didn’t stop anywhere, was continuously chit-chatting on the phone and even on request wouldn’t stop the vehicle to click a photo. Basically, it looked like his mission was just to keep driving in the park without any interest to stop or find animals.
Towards the end of the safari, it started getting dark and I believe, by fluke, he drove to the spot where all other vehicles were already there. There was a tiger sitting on the grass very close to the vehicle in open. Actually, he didn’t even spot the tiger which was so close and just drove by. Other drivers had to actually point the tiger to us which was only 100 meters from the jeep. But we could not see the tiger because our great driver stopped right in front of the tree blocking our view and wasn’t ready to move forward or backwards in spite of repeated requests.
Once it got completely dark, he then finally agreed to move the vehicle but now being dark the tiger was not visible. It was our sheer back luck with this driver whereas I’m sure others got an awesome view of the tiger as he was sitting on the grass easily visible. Having paid Rs. 4500 for this jeep safari we left disappointed and in a bit of anger.

We stayed at The Serai Bandipur which was 30 minutes away from the Bandipur National Park gate. This hotel was everything we wanted and much more – one of the biggest rooms we have ever stayed in, huge bathrooms and a balcony with a nice sitting place. For dinner, we ordered from room service and the food was the best we had on this trip.

Day 8 – The Serai Bandipur

Today, we didn’t do any safari and spent the entire day chilling in the hotel.

We started the day with breakfast where I had paratha, idli, medu vada, channa-bhatura, sautéed vegetables, cupcakes and hot freshly made dosas. The service was attentive and he got everything we asked for.

Then we chilled in our rooms enjoying the view from the balcony for some time. Afterwards, we went for a dip in the pool. Then mom and dad went for a nature walk organized by the hotel but it was cut short as they spotted an elephant.

We went to the pool to enjoy the born fire organized every evening at a dedicated place. We were looking forward to it as we love sitting around the born fire and chilling. But there was a huge group dancing and drinking like crazy. We felt uncomfortable and were about to leave, but in the meantime, they informed us that it was a private party going there. I felt a bit insulted and left the place. He kept telling us to go to the bar instead, I told him I don’t drink and want to enjoy the bonfire. Also, it was my dad’s birthday. Eventually, he kept running here and there and saying I will start for you. After a bit of fight, he finally got the bonfire going at another makeshift place. This was only one rare incident which spoiled our mood, apart from this the hotel was top-notch.

For dinner, we ordered Ala-carte in the restaurant. We ordered a couple of starters as we were in no mood to have full Indian fare again. Since there was a bit of fight earlier, he tried to make it up by offering free soup and deserts.

Day 9 – Bandipur to Coimbatore Airport (161 Km, 5 hrs)

Time – 5:45 am to 8:30 am and 2 pm to 7 pm

Morning Safari in the Bandipur National Park

Today we had booked a morning safari from 6:30 am to 8 am. If it wasn’t booked and paid for, we were not really interested in going for it as our previous day safari turned out to be terrible. However, this time around, we got a good guide. He took us to the same place where a tiger with 3 cubs had been spotted yesterday. He was very co-operative and always catered to our request and didn’t even speak on the phone once like our previous driver. We did get a glimpse of a tiger and 2 cubs but they disappeared too quickly before I could click a picture.

Drive to Coimbatore Airport

We had breakfast, chilled for a while and started our drive back to the Coimbatore airport.

For the drive back, we took the 36 hairpin bends road back to Ooty. This is the shortest but challenging route from Ooty. They allow cars to go only from Bandipur to Ooty and not in the other direction.

Instead of taking the same road from Ooty via Coonoor to Coimbatore, we took the road via Kotagiri. Thanks to our driver who suggested this alternate route. It had some scenic valley views and tea estate along the route. We reached the airport at 7 pm and took our 8:45 pm flight back to Mumbai.

There you have it, our 3-day itinerary to Ooty and Bandipur. It turned out to be perfect and I wouldn’t change a thing except for our safari driver. Was Ooty better or Kodaikanal? We had expected Kodaikanal to be much better than Ooty. But it turned out to be a split decision, 2 liked Ooty better and 2 liked Kodaikanal better.

Bandipur Van Safari

Van safari is organized every morning and evening at Bandipur National park. There are five vans in total each van can accommodate 20 people.

Tickets are issued at the Bandipur Safari reception centre office located about 2 km before the Bandipur Tiger reserve Gate. It is advisable to reach the safari office at least 30 mins before the safari timing especially during holidays and weekends.

There are Gypsys and camper jeeps available with the Bandipur forest department that are used for safaris.

To increase your chances of availing a Jeep or Gupsy safari in bandipur make sure to reach the safari office well in advance at least by 2pm for afternoon safari. As there are limited number of jeeps available it might not be possible for everyone to get a jeep safari. But Van safari is as good as keep safari in Bandipur.

The petrol gypsy is suitable for upto 5 people – Rs. 4500 plus entry fee of Rs. 200 per person. There are campers – Rs. 7500 also available.

Bandipur Elephant Safari

Elephant ride was organized at Bandipur few years back but now it is not open to public. The elephants camp is located inside the Bandipur national park where tourists can sometimes see the camp elephants. For Elephant safari visit Mudumalai national park that is just a stone throw away from bandipur. hardly a 15mins drive.

There is a wildlife souvenir shop located within the safari campus and one shop located half km before the bandipur tiger reserve entrance opposite to jungle lodges resort in bandipur. Shop for pepper honey, Coasters, mugs and t-shirts with beautiful wildlife prints.

You will also find some lovely pen stands, key holders, coffee trays, book bins and tea tables made of lantana which is considered as a forest weed and there are NGOs working on eradiating the weed. Dos and Don’ts At Bandipur Safari office

Basic canteen available near the safari office.
Look out for Parakeets, Nuthatches, barbets and other birds on trees around the place.
There is a small wildlife museum that is worth watching before or after the safari
Use the paid toilets located behind car parking
Enjoy the nature and surroundings in a responsible manner
Do not feed the monkeys, deer, wild boar or any wildlife that you see near the safari office as feeding wildlife is harmful to them as well as you
Do not litter the place
Do not venture in the jungle on foot.
Don’t over speed or park your vehicle in middle of the forest
Don’t make noise or disturb other travelers.

Remember, most of the diseases like HIV, Ebola came to humans via monkeys. If a monkey bites or scratches you, immediately wash and clean the wound, get a anti rabies vaccination within 4 hours for effective protection.

The red route is quite exciting and takes about an hour. The bus comes every 10 to 15 minutes. However the other two routes take about two hours each and buses come every 30 to 40 minute period. The boat element was wonderful, we saw some amazing parts of Moscow along the river side. The bus element was very disappointing as it only started at 10am and was finished by 6:30pm. It was extremely warm when we were there and it would have been great to do the tour in the cool of the day. There was also no air conditioning in the down stairs part of the bus. The ear phones were small and sometimes the commentary did not link up with the sites you were seeing. The green bus takes you on a longer route and ours took two and a half hours due to the heavy traffic. I would not recommend this trip unless it is raining or you want to fill in time. The bus didn't stop at many points. Were were unaware a couple of times at what point we were and missed them. Headphones and maps were provided. And in the boat even tough we were 90% English speaking tourist at least, the tour guide spoke 95% of the time in Russia, and only 3 sentences in English, I really counted how many times she spoke in English. And at the end she asks us if we have any questions? Of course I told her I couldn’t ask her anything since I didn’t understand 95% of what she was saying. The boat tour is not worth it, just take the bus that would be my advice. Second minus is the waiting times, in the boat they made us wait an hour before it departed, and in many stops with the buses waiting times of 20-30 minutes. How to use the Moscow Metro (PHOTOS+INFOGRAPHICS)

It’s really convenient to use the Moscow Metro and city trains. They operate from 5:30 in the morning to 1:00 at night and you can pay for them with the same ‘Troika’ ticket card. Indeed, the map of the subway looks complex. But that’s only at first glance.

For starters, let’s separate the underground metro from surface city trains. The underground map is marked by bright solid lines, while the lines of surface routes are marked by two parallel lines with a white gap in between.

It has two ring lines – the brown Koltsevaya, or Circle line (5) and the new Bolshaya Koltsevaya line (Big Circle Line) colored turquoise (number 11). These rings cross all other underground metro lines, so if you need to reach another line from the outskirts – it’s convenient to use one of the ring lines.

Circle Line

We can consider that the center of the city is inside of the ring line (5). Also there’s a multitude of transfers from one line to another within the brown ring. The record holder is Biblioteka Imeni Lenina – Arbatskaya – Alexandrovsky Sad – Borovitskaya. These whole four lines crossed in one place (right next to the Moscow Kremlin). Also, you can reach the Kremlin quickly and conveniently from stations Okhotny Ryad – Teatralnaya – Ploshchad Revolyutsii, which also have transfers between each other.

Big Circle Line

You can also reach the Vnukovo Airport right by metro! The corresponding station of the Solntsevskaya Line (8A) was opened in September 2023.

How does the underground metro operate?

The intervals between trains are really small – on average about 2 minutes; during rush hour, they run even more often. So you don’t need to run and squeeze yourself into closing doors (that’s also dangerous). Just wait for the next train, it’ll arrive quickly. Unlike the subway systems of other cities – the trains run along single lines, without branching away. So you can just board the train in the required direction without worrying that you will go somewhere you didn’t intend to.

There are only two exceptions:

From Alexandrovsky Sad Station of the light-blue line trains run either to Mezhdunarodnaya Station (where Moscow City is located, where a lot of businessmen go) or to Pionerskaya.
Bolshaya Koltsevaya line also has the so-called fork branching: from Savelovskaya Station to the Business Center (also to Moscow City).

Sometimes you can hear an announcement ‘This train runs to the station…’ If you need to go further, you simply need to get off at the station the train is bound for, and wait for the next train. Perhaps, this train just needs to go to the depot.

Surface routes:

Apart from the underground metro itself, the new map marks suburban trains. You can tell them apart immediately – these lines are indicated with two parallel lines with a white gap in between.

1) MCC: Moscow Central Circle (14)

Moscow Central Circle (MCC)

Let’s take a look at the map again and find a red circle, situated between the underground Koltsevaya (5) and Bolshaya Koltsevaya (11) lines. This is the Moscow Central Circle (14) or simply MCC.

This is a surface urban train that circles around the city. There are stations from where you can transfer to the underground metro. However, these transfers usually are not as short as between subway stations. Sometimes you’ll need about 10 minutes of walking to transfer.

So we don’t recommend you to use MCC purely as a transfer route. In addition, the interval between trains on MCC is longer than in the metro, and can reach 4-8 minutes, depending on the time of day.

However, a big advantage of the MCC is that it has a lot of stations that are far removed from the metro, and which are most conveniently reached specifically by the MCC.

2) Moscow Central Diameters (MCD)

Moscow Central Diameters (MCD)

Moscow diameters on the metro map are the longest lines that cross the entire city (hence, they are called diameters). They are reminiscent of urban trains, like S-Bahn in Berlin or Vienna or RER in Paris.

Those are suburban train lines that run from suburbs (from the Moscow Region, marked as a green shadow on the map) and, crossing the entire city, are bound for suburbs on the other side of the city. At some of the stations of a diameter you can get off and transfer to the metro or the MCC. During rush hour, MCD trains run with an interval of 5-7 minutes.

D1 – Belorussko-Savyolovsky Yellow Diameter runs from Odintsovo Station south-west from Moscow through Moscow City and Belorussky railway station to Sheremetyevo Airport and to Lobnya Station in the north.

D2 – Kursko-Rizhsky Pink Diameter runs from the Moscow Region city of Podolsk in the south through Kursky railway station, Three Station Square (Leningradsky, Kazansky, Yaroslavsky), and Rizhsky railway station to the village of Nakhabino in the north-west.

D3 – Leningradsko-Kazansky Orange Diameter runs from Ippodrom Station in the south-east (the city of Ramenskoye) to Zelenograd in the north.

D4 – Kaluzhsko-Nizhegorodsky Green Diameter runs from the city of Aprelevka in the south-west through Moscow City, Belorussky, Savelovsky, and Kursky railway stations, as well as through Three Station Square (Leningradsky, Kazansky, Yaroslavsky) to Zheleznodorozhnaya Station in the city of Balashikha in the east.

A fifth MCD line is also projected, which is promised to be finished by 2028. It will connect the south (Domodedovo) and the north (Pushkino).

3) Moscow Monorail

Look for the only monorail line in Russia to the north from the center of Moscow. It’s not just a surface line, it’s an elevated line that stands on piles. It’s a short line (13) that operates in an excursion mode – from it, you can get a beautiful view of the Ostankino TV Tower, for example.

Once per half an hour, the train runs from Timiryazevskaya Station (which is near the station of the same name on the Serpukhovsko-Timiryazevskaya (9) line, which is the gray metro line) to Ulitsa Sergeya Eisensteina Station, which is located next to the entrance to the VDNKh park and to the VDNKh metro station of the Kaluzhsko-Rizhskaya (6) metro line.

4) Light metro

Butovskaya (12) line in the south of Moscow runs from Buninskaya Alleya Station to Bitsevsky Park Station; from it, you can make a transfer to the gray Serpukhovsko-Timiryazevskaya (9) line and the orange Kaluzhsko-Rizhskaya (6) line. This line runs mostly on the surface, entering a tunnel, but is considered a part of the subway (hence, this line is marked with a solid line as other metro lines).

A useful piece of advice

The Moscow Metro website has an interactive map with all metro lines, MCC, and diameters. With it, you can build a route from the departure station to the destination station, take a look at all travel options and where you can make necessary transfers.

How to pay the fare

The convenience of the Moscow transportation system is that you only need the Troika card for travel with any type of public transport, be it the metro, suburban trains, or buses/trams. You can purchase it in ticket offices or from machines at stations. Also in souvenir shops and in the metro internet store you can purchase keychains, bracelets, and rings that work like a Troika card, as well as Troika cards with a unique and custom design.

You can top up your card by simply adding a particular amount of money – or purchase the Unified ticket for 60 travels or unified unlimited ticket for 1/3/30/90/365 days.

The deposit price of the Troika card is 80 rubles, and you can get it back when returning the card to the ticket office. The validity period of the card is 5 years, so you can save it for future travels.

One MCC, MCD (in the city center), and metro trip costs 54 rubles. Transfers in the metro, MCC, or between diameters are free within 90 minutes. The fare on MCD in the suburbs costs 71 rubles.

Important: you need to pay the fare in the metro and MCC only upon entrance. On diameters, you need to activate trips upon entrance and then tap your card again at the turnstile upon exiting.

Also almost every station has a terminal where you can pay your fare, tapping your bank card.
