A Word From Our Allies

Firetti Family testimonial image

Dear Delta! We just received our new 294RK from General RV three days ago and stayed in it yesterday with our family on our property on the Chesapeake. To say that we had the best times of our lives while the rain was pouring down, would be the understatement of the year! My family and I were so impressed with the quality and functionality that I’m threatening to buy another one for them and probably will soon! This is our first RV, we looked a MANY brands and models and dollar for dollar on the value equation, your Delta models stood head and shoulders above all others! So please accept our great thanks for allowing my family to enjoy such a wonderful experience together and to all of the hard workers that built my unit, our deepest appreciation for doing it right the first time!!! It’s just remarkable for the dollars invested. Ps- to prove the above, we just sold our 2023 Riviera 6000 sport yacht for a considerable sum and every family member, hands down loves the Delta 10 times better than the yacht! Keep up the prideful work because it’s showing and I’m going to share my love for this product to the world! Thank you kindly!

Chantz Testimonial Image

My wife and I ultimately decided to go with Alliance for several reasons. The layout of the 5th wheel we purchased, the fit and finish, the number and size of windows, the colors, etc. One of the biggest factors was the level of support they provide their customers. This came up over-and-over during our research. Every company claims it, but when you hear it from actual owners, it carries weight. I am happy to say that right out of the gate we have seen it first hand. All I did was put out a question in a FB group for current owners about the model we were purchasing. Not only did the community respond with great information, but someone from Alliance reached out directly. I would encourage anyone looking for an RV to at least take a look at Alliance RV.

Jeff and Steff Testimonial Image

We purchased our Alliance Paradigm in 2022 and couldn’t be happier! They make a great product and stand behind their work. We have reached out to the customer service team a couple of times and have been taken care of quickly and respectfully. We would definitely purchase from them again.

Cathleen Testimonial Image

Looking for a different camper buying experience? Alliance is for you. They are fairly new to the industry but their support team, management and owners are not. We all know when you buy a camper you will most likely encounter some issues, the difference with Alliance is their motto "Do the right thing". And they do just that. They won't disappoint! We are enjoying our 32RLS Avenue.

Mark Testimonial Image

What a wonderful company. They really do, "do the right thing". We have owned our beautiful Paradigm 310RL for 2 years. We travel fulltime, in our 6th year. Our Paradigm is a great rolling home for us. We are so proud to be Alliance owners! I wish we could give more than 5 stars!

Gina Grote Testimonial Image

We had always owned “other brands” and (12 of them in 40 years) until we purchased our Alliance we didn’t know what quality was. Customer Service is a solid 10 out of 10. Can’t wait for future floor plans. We are in ours 8 months a year and are well into our second year of owning the brand. We are Alliance customers for life.

Angela Hamill Testimonial Image

We ordered a 2023 310RL in late December and took delivery the first of March. In six days, we took it completely across the country (FL to CA) with no issues. Our salesman at RV Connections in Panama City had a direct contact person at Alliance and together they answered all our questions and concerns before delivery. After delivery we had an independent inspection. There were a few minor issues and they fixed them before we left the lot. We love our new home! Our dogs love it too! So far I’m happy to sing praise to Alliance.

Meet the Team

Our employees exemplify a standard of excellence in every aspect of their work. Their commitment to quality and detail is meticulous. With dedication and genuine passion for their craft, our employees rise to the next level of what is to be expected from a RV manufacturer.

A 10-day visit to Sanguli- Salou

A 10-day visit to Sanguli- Salou

We love camping holidays (well mobile home style camping). I’d been hearing about these two great campsites in Salou everywhere I went, Cambrills and Sanguli. So this past year we added Sanguli to our travel list and boy did it exceed our expectations.

We spent 10 glorious days at the end of May, start of June 2019, in the Spanish campsite Sanguli along with another five families (friends). We booked it back in June 2018 (paid just over €1,200) to ensure we all got the accommodations we wanted (and even at that one family didn’t get their desired living quarters for the 10 days). We booked our 2020 vacation before we left this year to guarantee our locations.

We put a 25% deposit down of the total amount of the stay and we aren’t required to pay another penny until we arrive on site (or we can pay it off bit by bit as the year goes on.). Please note that only 25% is required if booked before December 31 st the year before. 50% of the total amount is required for reservations from Jan1st and up to 30 days before arrival. If, for some reason, you need to cancel, once you notify Sanguli within 60 days of arrival date, then you will get all your deposit back except for €50.

We flew from Dublin to Barcelona (we live near Shannon so it would have been so much easier to fly Shannon to Reus (which is about 15 min away from Sanguli) but there was approximately a €600 saving for a family of 5 by flying the Dublin to Barcelona route (and hiring a car and spending one night at an airport hotel). We used a company called Record Go for car hire but weren’t entirely happy with our experience.

We booked our flights at Christmas time in the Aer Lingus sale (approx Dec 27 th ). At the time this article was written (August 2019) flights were currently on sale for Dublin to Reus route but the Shannon and Cork routes are due out later this year (usually Oct).

Accommodations:

There are 4 sections in Sanguli. Africa, Carribean, Mediterrania and Polinesia. There is one main reception (in the Africa section) that everyone must check into (unless you are bringing your own tent or motorhome). And then you can request a golf cart to bring you and your luggage to your accommodations.

Africa is the closest (and most modern accommodations in my opinion) to reception. There is also a fantastic pool with slides, African animals and plenty of sun loungers. And a shop, restaurant (and take away) and small bakery close by. There is no cars in this section- only right down the rear end near the car park. All accommodations are modern and clean. This year we hired the 2 bedroom Nuba lodge and next year we have hired the biggest one, the 3 bed Samburu lodge. There is also smaller options called Masai and also very stylish. There are also Safari tents that you can hire. These are very cool. They have eclectic and all similar amenities to other accommodations. They have 2 tents called the Grand Safari that can sleep up to 8 people.

The next section is Polinesia. These emulate huts and have various sizes. These aren’t far from Africa pool either but also pretty close to another pool area and the Amphitheatre where entertainment happens six nights a week (not on a Monday and only weekends off season). There is also a big restaurant here and a children’s playground. Plenty of space for everyone. No cars in this section. The options are the 4 bed Bali bungalows, or 6 person (max) Tahiti and Tahiti Suite.

The Carribean section have brightly coloured apartment style accommodations that are large in floor space and smack bang in the middle of the park. No cars allowed in this section. Located close to Africa and Amphitheatre pools. They are very spacious villas and can sleep up to 4 adults and 2 kids.

The Mediterrania is where the mobile homes are and you can drive your hired car to the door and park outside. Kids just need to be extra vigilant in this area over the cars but overall everyone drives very carefully. The mobile homes were in great condition and had great space also. They are opposite the amphitheatre pool area. You can hire the 4 person Thalassa, the 6 person Louisianne or the 7 person Salauris mobile.

Entertainment/Sports

The night time entertainment in the Amphitheatre was exceptional. We (and the kids) had so much fun each night. The disco starts at 8pm for the kids and entertainment runs through until midnight most nights. During peak season there is entertainment six nights a week and during weekends off season.

There is an abundance of sports activities to choose from in Sanguli. There is a list of activities on a notice board down by the sports arena for a week. You won’t be bored.

Please note there is NO supervised kids club. There is a wonderful kids club that you can bring your little people to BUT you must stay with them. Sanguli don’t take responsibility for anyone’s kids and I can see why, it’s a super busy resort with hundreds of kids on site each day.

There is also a gym that you can pay to use. Classes in the morning are free.

You can also pay for mini-golf and the use of trampolines.

There are a few restaurants dotted around the site that serve a selection of various foods. We went out a lot to eat also and can highly recommend- Taste of India, Juniors, Twisted Lime, Barca, Mur Mur. There is also a few shops onsite so you can buy your own food (most accommodations don’t have ovens) or treat yourself to a take away.

We did a shop the first day (and again half way through the holiday) in Lidl (about a 5 min drive outside the Africa entrance) and stocked up on breakfast, snacks, fruit, drinks, toilet paper and all that good stuff. On site shops are fairly affordable also and the bakeries are lovely.

You can also buy disposable BBQs for use. They have gluten free food options in the shop and on the menus. People are also wonderful for leaving stuff they can’t bring home on their decks when leaving so watch out for these goodies.

Accessibility

They have great accessible accommodations and one of the pools has an area for wheelchairs.

Sanguli campsite is right across from the beach. From the Africa section it’s about a 12-15 min walk or a 7 min cycle.  We didn’t spend too much time on the beach (my kids loved the pools so much) but it’s a lovely beach and I went cycling or walking along it often. There is a beautiful promenade that leads right up into Salou (about a 12-15 min cycle or 30 min walk) and also down to the port of Cambrills (we didn’t get that far). There is also many restaurants directly outside the resort and down along the promenade and down into Cambrills and Salou. You will be spoiled for choice. It’s recommended to book restaurants in busy season. We did a lot.

I highly recommend everyone in the family gets a bike. It’s a great way to get around and the kids loved the freedom of being able to cycle around the Africa section on the bike and visit their friends up in Polinesia. You can hire onsite and also from a company called Amigo 24 on the main street to the left of Sanguli.

The weather: Although it’s a little pointless talking about the weather as it can be very different week to week, we had sunshine for 10 days.. The temps varied between 20-28 degrees on any given day. It was fabulous and the kids DIDN’T need wetsuits for the pool.

Cambrills (sister property)

You can be invited over to visit a friend in Cambrills for a few hours but they need to leave your name at reception. You can visit for an hour for free (if you know no one). You can also pay to visit Cambrills (if staying in Sanguli) for the day to test it out.

Off-Site

There are lots of day trips you can take (great if you have a car) but we didn’t stray too far. We spent a full day in Portaventura theme park and would highly recommend this. Perfect for three upwards. portaventuraworld.com/en

We ended our holiday with three days in Barcelona which was wonderful- that’s for another article though.

Closing and re-opening

The site closes on Nov 3rd this year (2019) and they celebrate Halloween the last 3 weekends of the season. The 2020 season will run from April 3 rd to Nov 1 st . Check in time is strictly 4pm (you can use all facilities though before this) and check out is 11am.

  • -There is no laundrette on site but you can drop off your laundry to be taken care of and it will be back to you within a day or two.
  • -There are safes is some accommodations and none in others (but can be hired) should you need to keep valuables safe.
  • -There is also some clothes and accessory shops on site to get your little luxury items.
  • -We booked directly through sangulisalou.com but there are other companies operating out of Sanguli (for example Eurocamp, Alfresco, Roan)
  • -The site is big but not as big as you would think. One half of the site is for campers so you have no need to be in this section (only to walk through to get to the exit onto the beach).
  • -It can be expensive (esp in high season) but you pay for what you get. It’s a luxury site and everything is well looked after.
  • -They don’t have a babysitting service.
  • -Smallest accommodations is Bali
  • -Irons can be hired for a refundable deposit of €30
  • -Tap water is safe to drink
  • -There is a little Sanguli beach club (reduced sun bed rates) straight in front of resort entrance.
  • -It’s self catering only (no all-inclusive options). We spent an average of €50 a day eating out.
  • -There is also a little train that goes from one part of the site to the other all day.
  • -There is a limited amount of free wife also- you can buy some if needed.

My recommendations:

Book as early as you can (at least a year out).

There is no need to run down to the pool early as there is plenty of sun loungers each day.

Book directly with the site as you save money and get good choice of accommodations. (you’ll also get your bed sheets, and towels, included when booking directly with some accommodations). sangulisalou.com

You can go into the highlights section on the profile page of our Instagram account- Getaways with Kids – where you’ll see two vlogs on our whole trip. This is a great way to get a feel for the place. The whole place is documented.

This was NOT a press trip. We paid in full for everything and this is an independent review of the resort. We booked directly so we can’t comment on bookings with other agents (eurocamp etc). Please note that schedules, rules and prices change regularly so this article is only factual at the time of print – September 3 rd , 2019. Please contact the campsite directly for any more information.

My family and I would rate this holiday a solid 10/10

Allianz Travel Insurance Review: Is it Worth The Cost?

Elina Geller

Many or all of the products featured here are from our partners who compensate us. This influences which products we write about and where and how the product appears on a page. However, this does not influence our evaluations. Our opinions are our own. Here is a list of our partners and here's how we make money .

What does Allianz Travel Insurance cover?

Allianz Travel Insurance is provided by Allianz Global Assistance, an insurer that operates in 35 countries and serves 40 million customers in the U.S. The company offers several types of travel insurance plans depending on your needs.

Travel insurance will help protect you if unexpected events affect your vacation. Whether you’re looking for a comprehensive plan or emergency medical coverage only to supplement the travel insurance you have from your credit cards , Allianz Global Assistance offers plenty of options.

Allianz trip insurance plans fall into two categories: single trip and annual/multi-trip plans. We evaluated several single trip and annual/multi-trip plans to help you figure out which policy makes sense for you.

Depending on what type of coverage you’re looking for, Allianz offers several different travel insurance options. Allianz’s plan choices fall under single trip or annual/multi-trip plans.

Single trip plans are designed for individuals who are leaving their home, visiting another destination (or destinations) and returning home. These travel insurance plans are the most comprehensive and provide benefits like trip cancellation, trip interruption and medical coverage.

Annual/multi-trip plans are designed for those who like to take a lot of little trips throughout the year as well as for business travelers. Because the coverage period is longer, these plans are more expensive.

Some of these plans include medical coverage only while others also provide more comprehensive travel insurance perks. There’s coverage for business equipment as these plans are geared toward work travelers.

Allianz offers five travel insurance plans for single trips, including a plan that's mainly focused on emergency medical coverage.

The OneTrip Cancellation Plus plan is geared toward domestic travelers who are looking for trip cancellation, interruption and delay coverage but don't need post-departure benefits like emergency medical or baggage loss. This plan is Allianz’s most affordable option.

OneTrip Basic, Prime and Premier are three comprehensive travel insurance plans.

OneTrip Basic is the most economical plan and offers trip cancellation, interruption and delay benefits along with emergency medical and baggage loss.

OneTrip Prime provides all the benefits of the Basic plan but with higher limits, a few extra coverage areas and complimentary coverage for children 17 and under when traveling with a parent or grandparent.

OneTrip Premier offers the most coverage, doubling almost every post-departure limit of the Prime plan with more covered cancellation reasons.

If you don't need pre-departure trip cancellation and interruption protections or you already have coverage through a premium travel credit card , the standalone OneTrip Emergency Medical plan may be a good choice. The plan mainly provides emergency medical protections along with some baggage loss/delay benefits.

Allianz single-trip plan cost

Here's a look at the cost of an Allianz travel insurance policy for a one-week, $1,500 vacation to Croatia in August 2020 taken by a 30-year-old from Texas.

alliance travel sanguli

The OneTrip Premier is the most expensive plan and provides the highest level of protection, especially for emergency medical events.

However, if you’re OK with lower limits on emergency medical, a OneTrip Prime or Basic plan could be a more appropriate choice. These costs represent a range of 3.4%-7.5% of the total cost of the trip, which is in line with typical costs of 4%-8%, according to the U.S. Travel Insurance Association.

Allianz offers four different annual/multi-trip plans.

AllTrips Basic is suitable for those who would like emergency medical coverage while abroad but don't need trip cancellation and interruption benefits. The AllTrips Prime, Executive and Premier plans provide an entire year of comprehensive travel insurance benefits.

The Executive and Premier plans offer various levels of trip cancellation and interruption benefits. The Executive plan is specifically designed for business travelers since it offers protection for business equipment.

Allianz annual/multi-trip plans cost

Let's look at an example of an annual Allianz travel insurance plan that starts in July 2020 for a 50-year-old from Illinois.

alliance travel sanguli

Coverage under these plans is offered for trips up to 45 days in length.

The AllTrips Executive plan costs significantly more than the other plans; this is mainly due to higher trip cancellation coverage, emergency medical and business equipment protections. The Executive coverage amount for trip cancellation can be increased beyond what is quoted here, driving that plan's price up to as much as $785.

If you’re not concerned with pre-trip cancellation benefits and don’t need the increased level of medical coverage, the Basic plan is the most affordable option.

For trips longer than 45 days, the AllTrips Premier plan might be a better choice as it offers coverage for up to 90 days. Using the same search parameters but with 90 days of coverage per trip, the cost of the annual plan is $475.

Chase Sapphire Reserve Credit Card

Choosing the right plan for your trip involves understanding what type of coverage you will want while you’re abroad.

If you have a premium travel card (e.g., the Chase Sapphire Reserve® ): These cards often offer some trip cancellation and trip interruption coverage, so you may not need a plan that offers all the same coverage. In this case, getting the OneTrip Medical plan might be enough.

If you’re going on a trip and returning home: OneTrip Prime, Basic or Premier are good options to choose from while offering different levels of coverage.

If you’ll be going on multiple and longer trips: the AllTrips Premier plan might be best as it provides insurance benefits for trips up to 90 days in length. The remaining three annual AllTrips plans cover multiple trips, up to 45 days.

If the coverage provided by your card isn’t adequate, you don’t have credit card coverage or you didn’t pay for your trip with that credit card: In these instances, it's best to choose a comprehensive plan depending on how much coverage you need and for how long. Consider one of the single trip or multi-trip plans.

» Learn more: Is travel insurance worth it?

Travel insurance plans have a lot of exclusions that you need to pay attention to so you know exactly what type of coverage you’re getting. Here are some general exclusions you can expect:

High-risk activities: Skydiving, bungee jumping, heli-skiing, and other types of high-risk sporting activities that the insurer deems unsafe.

Intentional acts: Losses sustained from intoxication, drug use, self-harm and criminal activity.

Specifically designated events: Epidemics, natural disasters and war are specifically mentioned in the policy as exclusions.

It's important to note that exclusions may vary based on the policy and where you live, so it's always best to review the fine print to ensure you’re clear about what is and isn’t covered.

Allianz has been offering insurance for more than 25 years. The company is well established and offers numerous single and annual travel insurance policies to fit many different needs.

Allianz travel insurance plans offer a wide array of benefits including (but not limited to): coronavirus-related coverage, trip cancellation, interruption, emergency medical coverage and transportation, baggage loss/damage, baggage delay, travel delay, change fee coverage, loyalty program redeposit fees, 24-hour assistance and many more benefits. Each plan is different, so you’ll want to look at the specific plans you’re considering to know exactly which benefits you’ll receive.

No, Allianz doesn't offer the Cancel For Any Reason optional upgrade. Review the policy details of the Allianz plan you’re considering to ensure you’re comfortable with the list of covered reasons. For example, the loss of a job can be considered a covered reason, but wanting to cancel a trip because you’re afraid to travel isn't.

Most often, you will need to file a claim with the insurer after you’ve incurred costs. If the claim is approved, you will receive a reimbursement. In other instances (e.g., covered baggage delay), the insurer will pay you a fixed amount per day and you won’t need to submit receipts.

Allianz Global Assistance offers several good travel insurance plans to choose from. If you’re looking for a travel insurance plan for a vacation, a single-trip plan is your best bet.

If you’re a frequent traveler or take lots of business trips, a multi-trip plan could be the way to go. If you have a travel credit card, look at what travel insurance benefits you may already have so you don’t duplicate your coverage .

This resort definitely exceeded our expectations. Impeccably clean, friendly and efficient staff and excellent facilities. Our children loved the swimming pools and there were so many other activities too. We already want to come back next year.

WHAT’S COVERED, COSTS, AND TIPS ON FINDING THE BEST TRAVEL INSURANCE FOR YOUR NEEDS

March 28, 2024 | 3 min read.

Erica Bray

Travel insurance can be an overwhelming expense to consider atop an already costly vacation. Admittedly, even as a seasoned travel industry professional with three decades of globe-trotting under my belt, I have a moment of pause each time I’m confronted with this. Ultimately, I almost always purchase some travel insurance coverage, especially when it’s a complex international trip. It’s primarily motivated by my aging parents—heaven forbid anything should happen to them—and wanting a safety net to return home at a moment’s notice without incurring massive out-of-pocket costs. This parental paranoia is just a small piece of the greater solace that travel insurance can provide, says AAA Tour Product Manager Randy Osborne. “Everyone can benefit from travel insurance,” he says. “The unexpected happens. It can provide peace of mind and reduce stress during a traumatic situation, as well as a contact to call when traveling abroad.” Osborne has seen it all. He works directly with AAA Travel Advisors and AAA’s preferred travel insurance provider, Allianz . It’s a vantage point that continually provides him with real-life cautionary travel tales. “I’ve never heard of anyone who needed and used travel insurance regretting having purchased it,” Osborne says. He says the biggest mistake people make is this: “Not getting it at all.” Here are some key things to keep in mind when navigating travel insurance

Woman go to travel at Ayuthaya Province

IT’S A FINANCIAL SAFETY NET FOR YOUR VACATION INVESTMENT There is no “one-size-fits-all” travel insurance plan, says Osborne, since available plans will be based on the trip cost, vacation destination(s) and age of the traveler(s). Most comprehensive travel insurance plans, however, will include varying degrees of coverage for the following:

  • Trip Cancellation: This is a predeparture benefit that provides the ability to recoup travel costs if you cannot travel. It’s typically limited to specific reasons covered in the plan. Osborne advises understanding what these covered reasons are upfront when reviewing plan options.
  • Trip Interruption: This helps if you need to cut your trip short. Covered reasons typically include an illness or injury during the trip, or a family emergency at home—which, as mentioned earlier, has always been this author’s primary motivator to purchase travel insurance.
  • Travel Delays: This helps to cover expenses if your travel is delayed due to a covered reason. Osborne advises understanding what constitutes a “travel delay” within the travel insurance plans you are considering.
  • Medical Expenses: This helps to cover unforeseen medical expenses while traveling to destinations where your U.S.-based health insurance may not work. “Frequently, the biggest covered amounts are for medical,” Osborne says.
  • Emergency Evacuation Coverage: This typically helps to cover the cost of transportation (plus related medical services and supplies) to a medical facility if you’re seriously injured or ill. The best plans will provide up to $1 million per person for medical evacuation. This can seem high, but evacuation costs can exceed tens of thousands of dollars, especially if you’re traveling to a remote destination.
  • Baggage Loss or Delays: This helps to recoup costs for lost luggage, as well as damaged or stolen baggage while you are on your trip.

Suitcase are on the airport horizontal travel

COMPARE PLANS

In some cases, such as when booking a cruise or a guided group tour vacation, the travel provider may require you to purchase a certain level of travel insurance before you can join the excursion. In these situations, representatives often have options that allow you to bundle travel insurance into the cost of the vacation at the time of booking. Even if this is the case, however, Osborne says it pays to shop around and compare travel insurance plans to see if there is a policy that better suits your needs.

Most travel insurance companies, including Allianz Insurance, have easy-to-use websites that highlight several levels of travel insurance for your trip. These quotes can be used as baselines for building upon or removing elements. Gather a few online quotes, then speak over the phone with a representative to customize.

SEEK PROFESSIONAL GUIDANCE

Allow a AAA Travel Advisor to guide you through the process and identify a travel insurance policy that works for your needs, risk tolerance, and budget. The best part: This service is free.

PURCHASE EARLY FOR THE MOST BENEFITS

You’ll get the best and most comprehensive coverage if you purchase travel insurance within the first 14 days of making a trip deposit. (That clock starts ticking once you put a down payment on any part of the vacation.) The biggest benefits include:

  • Trip Cancellation: The earlier you buy travel insurance, the sooner you are protected—even before you step on that plane, train, or cruise ship. “Often I get calls from travelers who didn’t expect to need insurance and then have a [medical] diagnosis before travel that prevents them from going,” Osborne says.
  • Better Trip Cancellation Coverage Options: Many travel insurance companies offer more covered reasons for trip cancellation if you purchase it within 14 days of making an initial trip deposit.
  • Pre-Existing Medical Conditions: If you have a pre-existing medical condition, most travel insurance will not cover medical situations due to this condition that arise during your travels— that is, unless you purchase comprehensive travel insurance coverage within the first 14 days of making a trip deposit.

ASSESS MEDICAL COVERAGE CAREFULLY, ESPECIALLY IF YOU HAVE A PRE-EXISTING CONDITION

Most U.S.-based health insurance plans won’t offer medical coverage on non-U.S. soil. Even if you have outstanding health insurance, it may not be very helpful during an international vacation where unexpected medical and health issues arise. This is certainly the case if you’re traveling to more remote areas with limited medical facilities or your vacation includes high-risk excursions and activities. Osborne says it’s important to understand whether travel insurance you’re considering offer primary or secondary medical coverage, and to assess which is best for you.

If you have a pre-existing medical condition or chronic health problems, medical coverage is an especially critical piece of the policy to scrutinize, Osborne says. He recommends consulting a travel insurance specialist so that you are covered accordingly.

Gay couple talking while sitting in yard

UNDERSTAND WHAT IS NOT COVERED IN THE POLICY It’s easy to focus on what’s included when comparing trip insurance plans. Osborne recommends paying close attention to what is excluded from coverage, too.

Case and point: I recently read about a couple who booked a return flight home after their original flight had been cancelled. When the couple filed a claim with their insurance provider to recoup this cost of this new flight, they learned that this specific scenario was not covered under the policy. (The flight was cancelled due to crew not arriving on time, and the airline was able to rebook the couple on a less-desirable flight home, which the couple declined.)

Clearly understanding the exclusions—and this could be achieved with a simple phone call to the insurance provider’s customer service—could have prevented this financial oops. BE

CAREFUL RELYING ON CREDIT CARD TRAVEL INSURANCE Just as you should not rely on your U.S.-based health insurance to cover you while traveling internationally, it’s wise to not make assumptions about a credit card that offers travel insurance as one of its perks. Osborne advises reviewing the credit card’s travel insurance coverage amount; the medical coverage policy; whether all trip purchases need to be made with that credit card; and if approved claims results in a cash refund or a travel credit.

Asian couple on holiday basking under the sun by the poolside

EPIDEMIC AND PANDEMIC COVERAGE IS AVAILABLE The events of 2020 turned travel on its head, and also impacted the travel insurance industry. As a result, travel insurance companies evolved and most now offer epidemic and pandemic coverage options. “Having coverage for quarantine is at the forefront of people’s minds now,” says Osborne, pointing to the out-of-pocket costs that came with many travelers having to quarantine in a vacation destination when Covid-19 was at a peak.    BUDGET FOR TRAVEL INSURANCE The average cost of travel insurance is 5% – 6% of your trip costs, according to Forbes Advisors’ analysis of travel insurance rates. If you’re planning an international, bucket-list vacation—and want to protect your investment in the unfortunate event that things go sideways—it’s wise to keep this cost in mind when creating your trip budget. “As much as we don’t want to think about the unexpected, things happen and having the coverage you need when you need it can be a huge benefit,” says Osborne. “If you need it, you will never regret having it.
