Everything you need to know about cycling in France your independent guide

2023 Tour de France program and race guide

Published by Lyn on 18 April 2023

The official Tour de France program and race guide ALWAYS SELLS OUT. It has all the info you need to plan your Tour de France trip, including stage times and maps. It's also great for viewing at home. You can order the UK edition here .

Tour de France race guide

The Official Tour de France race guide is published in the months leading up to the race.   ASO, the Tour de France organiser, licenses the publication of the guide in each country each year. This is why the quality varies across countries.

The UK edition of the TDF race guide

In my view, the UK edition is consistently the best English-language edition. If you live in the UK, US, Canada, Australia or anywhere else and you are following the Tour de France in person, then this is the edition you want to get your hands on. It is more comprehensive than the English editions released in the US and Australia.

You need to have the UK edition sent to a UK address. It cannot be delivered outside the UK due to ASO's licensing agreements.

There are usually two UK editions.

1) The Standard Edition  of the Official Tour de France 2023 Race Guide (UK/English). You can order it here for £10.99 .

2) The Premium Edition of the Official Tour de France 2023 Race Guide (UK/English). You can order it here for £17.99 .

Tour de France race guide

Readers outside the UK

As mentioned above, some of the versions below (published by local publishers on contract) are not as comprehensive as the UK English-language version. The UK edition is consistently more comprehensive than other editions and carries more maps, more route info, full stage times and more general race information.  If you are outside the UK and it's possible to have a friend in the UK send you a copy, then that would be my recommendation if you are travelling to the TDF.

* The Australian and New Zealand edition  can be ordered here  for $18.95 .  * For the US – I have no information on their being a US Edition this year.   * The original French-language version is released in France and is sold at newsagents and tabacs (corner stores). It is not as comprehensive as the UK edition.

The UK edition from the official publisher can only be sent to a UK address. There are two ways around this that readers have reported:

1)  Some readers outside the UK set up temporary UK postboxes  through this website .  They have the guide shipped there and forwarded to their US (or other overseas) address.

2) Some readers have reported success with this website . It is not the official publisher and I cannot offer any reassurance regarding their reliability.

All other links on this page are to the official accredited UK publisher.

What's usually included in the UK English-language edition?

I cannot speak for the 2023 US and Australian versions – this info relates to the UK English edition.

We find the UK version of the guide invaluable when planning our trips to watch the Tour de France. It's got maps of every stage, plus full team and stage profiles, as well as stage start and end times (they are particularly useful to have in one place both when planning and on the day).

There is a 'premium' edition as well as a 'standard' edition  that includes stuff like:

Standard UK English-language edition

The 2023 standard edition has :

  • 204-page program/magazine with individual Tour de France stage maps + stage start/end times
  • Tour de France Femmes info
  • A2 double-sided Tour de France and Tour de Femmes wallchart
  • Special Basque Legends magazine (the Tour this year starts in the Basque Country)
  • Exclusive beer mats showcasing mountain passes on this year's route + historic moments from previous years

Premium UK English-language edition

The 2023 premium edition has :

  • Souvenir TDF socks

Tour de France

(Image from a previous year).

Why get it?

We wouldn't go to watch more than one Tour de France stage without it. All the basic info is eventually replicated on the official TDF website, but having it in hard copy is handy (and easier/cheaper) if you're using phone data to access the web, if you're in a dodgy wifi zone or if your phone battery dies (yes, that was me in 2021).

We get dozens of emails every day asking for information about following the Tour de France – I always tell them to get a copy of the official race guide to make planning easier.

This guide has lots of info that can help you plan your trip. While it is published too early to include all road closure information ( see this page for that ), having all the stage information in one place is really handy. It basically replicates the official TDF website but in a much more easily digestible format and in much more detail.

Each stage is profiled with a map that helps you put key cols and stage towns into perspective, and to see clearly where access roads may be. The pullout map then gives a full overview of how the stages interact.

Those UK links again ...

1) The Standard Edition of the Official Tour de France 2023 Race Guide (UK/English). Order it here for £10.99 .

2) The Premium Edition of the Official Tour de France 2023 Race Guide (UK/English). Order it here for £17.99 .

This guide SELLS OUT EVERY YEAR, often weeks before the Tour. If you are thinking of watching the Tour de France in person , you should order a copy as soon as it's released.

A gay Tesco customer mocked Tesco for putting Attitude magazine in the 'hobby' section - pointing out being LGBT is not a 'pastime'.

Jo Nice had been food shopping on Tuesday when she spotted the gay lifestyle publication on the top shelf of the 'hobbies' section, next to photography and record collector magazines.

The baffled 42-year-old took a photo and shared it online, ridiculing the supermarket giant with the caption: "Fancy a new hobby? Record collecting? Photography? How about being gay? Nice one, Tesco."

After posting the image on Facebook, it attracted more than 40 comments, with social media users joking it was the 'best hobby ever'.

Jo, from Colchester, Essex, said: "I had a bit of a laugh. I was taking my mum for her grocery shop and looking to see if they had any tattoo magazines and I thought 'maybe tattooing is a hobby?'

"Then I spotted Attitude in the top righthand corner and thought it was funny. I posted on Tesco's page to make a joke.

"Looking at the other headings they had, I couldn't see where it would fit.

"I thought maybe 'lifestyle' but there wasn't that option. There was women's weeklies and sport, that sort of thing.

"The first comment immediately was 'what's wrong with being gay?' Well, nothing. But it's not my pastime?

"I'm more inclined to laugh at it and think it's a funny place to put it."

After posting online, Jo was inundated with comments from other members of the LGBT+ community who found the photo hilarious - while others appeared to miss the joke.

Shane Hutch asked 'and what’s wrong with being gay' while Jo replied 'nothing, but it isn't a hobby'.

The location of the magazine sparked confusion on Facebook

Heidi Moran said: "Pretty cool hobby though."

Chelsea Gardner said: "I think some people have seriously missed the joke here."

Jake Stevens said: "Best hobby ever. Its fun and its free!"

A Tesco spokesperson said: "Many of our lifestyle magazines are merchandised alongside our hobby magazines. The section header reflects the fact that the majority of titles in that area are classified as hobbies."

Should, contrary to expectations, an athlete be able to break away earlier, the aero card would sting in this case as well.

*) The calculations are based on the bikes tested by TOUR in the laboratory and wind tunnel. The bikes at the Tour de France may differ in details. Of course, we have not yet been able to examine last-minute prototypes either.

While the competitors race through vineyards and Medieval villages, you can follow along at home, taking your taste buds on an epic culinary Tour de France. Highlighting eight different regions in France, we’ve put together a roundup of the best foods and recipes from the places you’ll see as you watch the race. From the Alsace to the Occintanie these French food regions will take you on a gastronomic tour of the country.

Hauts de France

This year, the race starts in Denmark, making its way to France for stages four and five, which take place in Hauts de France, the northernmost region of France. Sharing a border with Belgium, food in this region has a Flemish influence. Stage five of the Tour begins in Lille, home to one of the most famous cheeses in France, Vieux Lille. Also called the “Lille Stinker”, Vieux Lille is known as one of the stinkiest cheeses in the world, giving off a pungent aroma that some say is similar to manure. But while the cheese is so stinky it’s allegedly been banned from public transport in the region, its flavor is rich and complex, with smoky and salty notes. The cow’s milk cheese has no rind and is soaked in brine for three months during the aging process, giving the cheese an umami flavor. For a strong cheese, you’ll want a strong drink to pair with it like the local Biere de Garde. Translated as “beer for keeping,” Biere de Garde is a traditional dark or amber beer that has Flemish influences, where beer is more popular at the dinner table than wine. The beers were brewed by farmers during the winter and stored until summer, giving the beverage time to develop a strong, bitter flavor.

Grand-Est

Stages six and seven of the Tour de France will take riders and viewers through the Grand-Est region. The Grand-Est is home to Alsace-Lorraine, a winemaking region along the Rhine river that’s famous for its Riesling. To experience the flavors of the region, you can go with a delicious Quiche Lorraine, made with bacon and gruyere–or better yet, a super-simple Quiche Lorraine-inspired muffin . For a heartier and more complicated recipe, opt for Coq au Riesling, a flavorful chicken stew that’s similar to Coq au Vin , but made with white Riesling wine instead of red wine. Wines from this region may not be as well-known as those from Burgundy or Bordeaux, but they are still quite easy to find at French wine shops. Light and citrusy with a tart sweetness, Riesling is perfect for a warm summer afternoon.

Bourgogne-Franche-Comté

Stage 8 of the Tour de France takes us through Burgundy, from Dole to Lausanne, Switzerland. This region of France is one of the country’s most famous culinary destinations. Dijon, the capital city of the region, is the birthplace of Dijon mustard and home to some of the most well-known restaurants and chefs in France. Burgundy is also famous for its wine, of course, most notably Pinot Noir and Chablis. One of the most well-known dishes from the region is Boeuf Bourguignon , a rich and hearty beef stew made with carrots, onions, and mushrooms in a red wine sauce.

For the next stages of the race, we’ll visit the French Alps, the setting for stages nine through twelve. The terrain here is steep, rocky, and unforgiving, setting a grueling course for the athletes. In the winter, the French Alps are a popular destination for skiers and in July, there may even be snow on some of the high peaks. Bordering Switzerland, the French Alps are known for their hearty, cheesy dishes like Raclette or Tartiflette , a meal of melted cheese over potatoes and other vegetables. At cozy chalets in the alps, you’ll find restaurants that have a special tool for broiling the Raclette and scraping it onto a pile of roasted potatoes, onions, saucisson, and pickles.

Auvergne-rhone-alpes .

From the high Alps, the race will continue through the Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes region for stage 13 from Le Bourg to Saint Etienne. This region of France is home to the city of Lyon, which is one of France’s best food cities, home of Paul Bocuse along with other Michelin-starred chefs. Though the restaurants here are known for incredible fine dining with complicated techniques and recipes, some of the best food the city is known for is simple, like its Rosette de Lyon Sausage the Salade Lyonnaise. The salad, made with frisee lettuce and topped with lardons and a poached egg, is a staple of French restaurants around the world.

Occitanie

Join the riders and spectators in Occitanie for stages 15, 16, 19, and 20 as they race through the Mediterranean landscape at the foothills of the Pyrenees. This region of France is best known for Cassoulet , a simple and comforting stew made with beans and sausage. Originating in the city of Castelnaudary, the dish is said to have been invented during the 100 Years War of the Middle Ages, when a siege on the city left villagers without access to food. To fight starvation, they filled a pot with anything they could find–various beans, duck, whatever sausage they had on hand–and cooked it in the oven as a casserole, giving them enough sustenance to fend off the invasion.

The Pyrenees

The Pyrenees, the mountainous region on the border of France and Spain, is host to stages 17 and 18 of the Tour de France. As the cyclists race through mountain villages, spectators can indulge in the delicacies of the region, including Duck Pate and Confit de Canard. Succulent and rich, Confit de Canard is a simple dish that’s easy (but time consuming) to make at home–and you can even substitute chicken if duck is too hard to find. While duck pate is harder to make at home, you can find it at gourmet specialty stores across the United States.

For the final stage of the Tour de France, the race takes over the city of Paris, where you’ll find regional cuisine from all over the country–and the world. But Paris has something you can’t replicate anywhere else in the world, no matter how hard you try. Perhaps the most well-loved contribution to global cuisine is the brasserie–the classic French restaurant. To honor the last stage of the Tour de France, you can create a French brasserie at home or find the best classic French bistro in your town–bonus points for red leather banquettes, white tablecloths, and vintage mirrors. Start your meal with a plate of oysters and a glass of champagne before indulging in steak frites–the quintessential Parisian dish that you can find on every French menu in the world. Pair your steak with a glass of Bordeaux, close your eyes, and feel transported to the greatest city in the world.

Icons of cycling: L'Auto, the newspaper that launched the Tour de France

The paper that launched the Tour de France has a combative history, writes Giles Belbin

tesco tour de france magazine

In the early 1900s a battle was raging on the print presses and newsstands of France. In one corner was Le Vélo, printed on green paper and edited by Pierre Giffard. In the other was L’Auto-Vélo, printed on yellow paper and edited by a former cyclist going by the name of Henri Desgrange.

Le Vélo first appeared in 1892, capitalising on the burgeoning interest in cycling. Organising its own races, it went from strength to strength throughout the 1890s and its future was seemingly secure. Then came the Dreyfus affair.

>>> Tour de France 2016 route and essential guide

In 1894 Alfred Dreyfus, a Jewish officer in the French army, was convicted of spying. France quickly divided into those who considered Dreyfus a traitor and those who thought him a victim of anti-Semitism.

Giffard supported Dreyfus and wasn’t shy about saying so, despite many of the industrialists upon whom Le Vélo relied for advertising feeling differently.

After one of his major backers, Alfred de Dion, was arrested in 1899 while demonstrating against the pardoning of Dreyfus, he and Giffard argued. De Dion pulled his advertising and set about establishing a rival paper.

Valiant efforts

Backed by a consortium put together by de Dion and edited by Desgrange, the first edition of L’Auto-Vélo was published on October 16, 1900. It proclaimed its existence a necessity of the time. “It will sing valiantly every day the glory of athletes,” it cheered.

For three years the papers traded punches with neither able to land a knockout blow. L’Auto-Vélo launched its own races, sometimes barely disguised copies of Le Vélo’s own events.

>>> Icons of cycling: The Champs-Elysées

Giffard meanwhile launched a legal challenge which forced Desgrange’s paper to drop ‘Vélo’ from its title. If Giffard thought he had at last landed a haymaker, he was wrong.

Desgrange fought back and on January 19, 1903, just three days after the enforced name change, L’Auto’s front page carried an announcement that would finally consign Le Vélo to the history books: “The Tour de France : the greatest cycle race in the world.”

A winning gamble

While Giffard was focusing on one-day races, Desgrange had taken a bold leap into the unknown and launched a race around the entire country.

It was a gamble that paid off in spades. Circulation of L’Auto soared as the hyperbolic prose of Desgrange and his team captured the super-human exploits of France’s new heroes in their daily despatches from the roadsides of France. Giffard simply couldn’t compete and the writing was on the wall. In 1904 Le Vélo finally folded.

L’Auto, empowered by owning the world’s greatest bike race, continued until 1944 when it closed during the liberation of France after cooperating with the occupying German regime. In its place came a new sports paper edited by a former L’Auto writer Jacques Goddet that thrives to this day: L’Equipe.

What are ketones and why are the Tour de France’s top teams using them?

Team jumbo-visma has four stage wins at the 2019 tour and are using ketones to help with their athletes' recovery and enhance performance at the french grand tour.

tesco tour de france magazine

Ketones are gaining popularity amoung endurance athletes. Recent studies show they can substantial improve recovery and can even give a boost of performance of up to 15 per cent. So it should come as no surprise that WorldTour cycling teams are using them to boost the performance of their riders. According to reports, as many as six teams currently racing the Tour de France could be using ketones.

“Ketones are a dietary supplement. You can use this just like vitamins. The substance is not on the prohibited list. It is also known that other teams use ketones, ” Jumbo-Visma team manager Richard Plugge told De Telegraaf revealing that the Dutch team gives them to their rides.

tesco tour de france magazine

Jumbo-Visma has four stage wins at the 2019 Tour de France. Mike Teunissen won the opening stage in Belgium in a sprint. The team scorched the team time trial course on Stage 2 putting 21-seconds into the usually dominant Team Ineos. The team’s lead sprinter, Dylan Groenewegen found success on Stage 7. The first phase of the Tour ended with three-time cyclocross world champion Wout van Aert winning in the sprint on a crosswind affected Stage 10. With three sprint wins from three different riders and a dominant display in the TTT, Jumbo-Visma are on fire.

Last year, The Telegraph reported that Team Sky, Mitchelton-Scott, Groupama-FDJ, Dimension Data and Sunweb all denied using ketones on their athletes while the BMC racing team, which merged into CCC at the end of the year, declined to comment. According to reports , many members of the British team were using ketones during the 2012 London Olympics after biochemist Kieran Clarke of the University of Oxford helped to develop the first ketone ester drink.

What are ketones?

A ketone body is a substance produced from fatty acid when our body is in a state of ketogenesis. This state is known as a state of survival that allows our body to survive a period without carbohydrate intake. A person who follows a strict ketogenic diet will start producing ketone bodies to give energy to normal daily functions and training.

tesco tour de france magazine

It is now possible to supplement your diet with ketone bodies in liquid or powder form. Powdered ketone bodies (ketone salts) are either BHB (beta-hydroxybutyrate) linked to an amino acid or to a mineral salt (sodium, potassium or calcium). This allows the ketone body to exist in powder form and easily dissolve in water. The same way that one consumes protein powder or electrolytes.

Liquid ketone body supplements (ketone esters) contain only ketone bodies. They are attached by an ester linkage to a precursor of a ketone body such as butanediol or glycerol. Studies on fluid supplements are much more conclusive than studies with powdered supplements. These supplements are, however, much more expensive. For example, three small bottles of 25 grams of HVMN brand ketones sell for US$99 while KetoneAid sells bottles with 300 grams of ketone ester for US$320.

Do ketone bodies work?

A recent study published by Peter Hespel, a Belgian sports science researcher who works with the WorldTour Quickstep cycling team, has demonstrated the effect that liquid ketone bodies can have on recovery. The subjects conducted an intense training camp of three weeks to simulate the load and duration of a competition like the Tour de France. Nine subjects consumed the ketone body supplement and nine others took a placebo. Participants drank up to three bottles a day, one after each workout and one before going to bed.

Carbohydrates and fats provide us with energy to allow us to train at different intensities, and proteins are essential to repair muscle breakdowns and allow us to recover. However, there is another energy source that could be beneficial for energy and muscle recovery: ketone bodies.

“The evidence for using Ketone ester – which is this drink they’ve created – seems to be that it reduces the emphasis on carbohydrate metabolism,” explained Team Sky’s nutritionist James Morton in 2018. ” On the one hand, this could be a good thing as it may spare muscle glycogen use meaning you have more for later. On the other, if it surpasses the ability of muscle to use carbohydrate as a fuel then this could really be detrimental to performance. So, whether it’s a good thing or a bad thing  is too early to say.”

Does it work?

A recent study published by Peter Hespel, a Belgian sports science researcher who works with the WorldTour Deceunick-Quick Step cycling team, has demonstrated the effect that liquid ketone bodies can have on recovery. The subjects conducted an intense training camp of three weeks to simulate the load and duration of a competition like the Tour de France. Nine subjects consumed the ketone body supplement and nine others took a placebo. Participants drank up to three bottles a day, one after each workout and one before going to bed.

tesco tour de france magazine

By the third week of the camp, the group that consumed the ketones was able to perform sustain training load 15 per cent higher than the placebo group. As well as push a power output 15 per cent higher in a time trial effort.

At the end of these three weeks, all participants had a reduction in their max heart rate during maximal and submaximal exercise, which is normal following a long period of intense training. However, the reduction in heart rate was lower in subjects who consumed the ketone supplement, which may demonstrate the effect of this supplement on recovery.

“I have heard a cyclist say that he had participated in a dozen Tours of France, one of which on ketones. With that one on ketones, his heartbeat in Paris had hardly dropped compared to his heartbeat with the prologue,” said Hespel who has ketones effects on recovery unprecedented.

Ketones are not-currently banned by WADA but some teams appear to still be cautious about employing them on their riders during a rigorous three week Grand Tour.

“There is much uncertainty about the efficacy. There are even studies that show that it has a negative effect on sports performance. That the remedy would only be good for recovery. We want to be sure that we will not harm our riders,” said Team Sunweb doctor Anko Boelens.
