67 Elegant Fine Line Tattoos For Minimalists

There’s beauty in simplicity; fine line tattoos are a good example. Find your next ink from these stunning and minimalistic tattoo ideas.

While bold, vibrant designs certainly catch the eye, simplicity has been an ever-growing trend recently. More and more people are falling in love with sleek, delicate designs as a representation of their own style and identities. And among them, fine line tattoos are one of the top options for minimalists.

These designs feature symbols, everyday objects, or scripts with thin, precise lines, creating a stunning look without screaming for attention. No wonder why fine line tattoos are among the most sought-after ideas for first-timers and all genders.

But what exactly is a fine line tattoo? Is it for everyone? And what sets it apart from regular styles?

What is a fine line tattoo?

Fine line is a broad concept in tattooing. It refers to applying thin, accurate lines to the skin. So theoretically, all tattoos with thin outlines can be labeled as “fine line tattoos,” whether big or small, colored or black.

What’s the difference between fine line tattoos and regular tattoos?

Unlike traditional tattoos characterized by bold and thick lines, fine line tattoos are all about subtlety and precision. To achieve that, tattooists often use super fine needles, allowing them to go into the details and shadings accurately.

And because of that, fine line tattoos tend to have less depth and saturation than regular tattoos. In addition, they focus less on the coloring and more on the form, showing the purest side of the motif. As a result, fine line tattoos appear more delicate and less overwhelming, making them a versatile choice for anyone looking to get inked.

While fine line tattoos may not be as bold as other tattoo styles, they can still be stunning and impactful. To help you narrow your search, here’s a collection of some of the best fine line tattoos on the net. Whether you’re looking for a small, simple design or a larger, more intricate piece, you will find your next ink in this post.

Traveling is one of life’s greatest adventures. It opens us up to new experiences, cultures, and people, and it allows us to step outside of our comfort zones and see the world from a different perspective. For many people, travel is a way of life, and they take every opportunity to explore new destinations and create lasting memories. And for some, getting a small travel tattoo is a way to commemorate those memories and the experiences they’ve had.

fine line travel tattoo small

A small travel tattoo is a simple, minimalist design that represents a place or moment that holds special significance to the individual. It can be a tiny outline of a city skyline, a compass, a map, or a symbol that represents a specific culture or tradition. While some people choose to get larger tattoos that cover a significant portion of their body, a small travel tattoo is a subtle way to pay tribute to a favorite destination without going overboard.

There are many reasons why someone might choose to get a small travel tattoo. For one, it’s a unique and personal way to express oneself. A tattoo can represent a specific time or place in one’s life, and it can serve as a reminder of the experiences that have shaped them. It’s a way to carry a piece of that place with you wherever you go, and it can be a conversation starter with others who have similar interests or have traveled to the same place.

Additionally, a small travel tattoo is a low-commitment option for those who may not want to go all-in with a larger design. It’s a way to dip one’s toes into the world of tattoos without making a major commitment, and it can be easily covered up or removed if one’s feelings about the design change over time. A small tattoo also tends to be less painful and less expensive than a larger one, which makes it a more accessible option for those who are interested in getting inked but don’t want to break the bank.

Finally, a small travel tattoo can serve as a visual reminder of the importance of travel and exploration. It can inspire one to keep exploring new places and experiencing all that the world has to offer. It’s a way to stay connected to one’s passion for adventure, even when life gets busy or the daily grind takes over. For some, getting a small travel tattoo can be a way to make a commitment to themselves to keep exploring, to keep learning, and to keep growing.

Small tattoos require a certain level of simplicity to ensure that the design is visible and looks good. Consider a simple symbol or image that represents your travels, such as a compass, map, or airplane. These types of designs are easy to recognize and can be scaled down to fit in a small space.

While some people opt for bold and colorful tattoos, small travel tattoos often look better in black and gray. These colors are subtle and can add depth and dimension to the design without being too overpowering. If you do choose to add color, consider using a limited color palette to keep the design cohesive and visually appealing.

When it comes to getting a tattoo, it’s important to find a reputable artist who has experience creating small designs. Consult with your tattoo artist to discuss the design, placement, and colors you want for your travel tattoo. They can offer valuable insight and suggestions to ensure that the final product meets your expectations.

While getting a small travel tattoo may seem like a great idea at the moment, it’s important to consider the long-term implications. Think about how the tattoo will look as you age and if it will still be relevant to you in the future. Additionally, consider how the tattoo may impact your future job opportunities, as some employers may have strict tattoo policies.

Fine Line Tattoos Are the Minimalistic Ink Trend Adored by Celebs

Pia Velasco is a New York-based beauty reporter with over 10 years in the industry. She joined InStyle as Senior Beauty Editor in 2021.

fine line travel tattoo small

Unlike fashion and beauty trends that you can test-drive before fully committing to, tattoos are a different story. Sure, your trendy balayage with bottleneck bangs may require time to grow out and fade, but permanent ink will stay on your skin forever. As such, it's really important to know exactly what you're signing up for before  getting a tattoo .

There's been a rise in fine line tattoos — in fact, there are over 150 million views on  TikTok videos  about them. Even celebrities such as  Hailey Bieber  and bestie  Kendall Jenner  keep getting them. An artist at  Iron & Ink , an international tattoo studio, told  InStyle  that fine line tattoos have become a major trend. To better understand fine line tattoos, we tapped ink experts Wiwi Schrøder and Robert Boyle for everything you need to know.

Meet the expert

  • Wiwi Schrøder is an Iron & Ink tattoo artist.
  • Robert Boyle is the founder of Foreverist Skincare .

Keep scrolling for a complete guide to fine line tattoos.

What Are Fine Line Tattoos?

Essentially, they're exactly what they sound like.

"A fine line tattoo is a subtle, delicate, and thin tattoo," explained Schrøder.

Furthermore, Boyle noted that in appearance, fine line tattoos are often softer in shading and more delicate in their linework than other types of tattoos.

To get a fine line tattoo, both experts say that the tattoo artist will either use a single needle or combinations of small needles.

The Benefits of Fine Line Tattoos

It depends on what you're looking to get out of it, but there are several upsides to getting a fine line tattoo. For starters, Schrøder noted that because they're so discreet, everyone can get one without having to make a bold statement on their body. In fact, Boyle suggested that because of an increase in workplace tattoo acceptance, fine lines have grown in popularity. Plus, if you want to join the tattoo community without getting a thicker and bolder type of tattoo, fine lines offer a beginner-friendly entry point.

Then, there's the factor of pain. While no tattoo will be completely painless, Schrøder pointed out that fine line tattoos hurt less as they use small needles. However, Boyle noted that placement can greatly affect how much getting a tattoo hurts, not to mention the artist's skill level.

Risks of Fine Line Tattoos

If you're reading this article, you've likely seen photos of fine line tattoos and are intrigued by the artistry and attention to detail. As such, you've likely realized that it takes a very skilled hand to achieve an intricate, well-detailed, fine line tattoo.

"They're more difficult to execute perfectly than many traditional styles of tattooing because the lines are thin and, in turn, less forgiving with mistakes," explained Boyle. "For it to be perfect, the artist needs the lines to be straight, continuous, and with the ink inserted all at the same depth. This can be difficult depending on the placement of the tattoo itself, along with the artist's skills."

Schrøder added that because there's little to no room for mistakes, even the slightest mishap will be noticed.

Boyle added that the risk of not going to an artist who is highly skilled in fine line tattoos is getting ink that becomes a blowout — where lines end up being thicker and thinner in different places — or a fallout — where the ink falls out of the skin during the healing process — as the design itself is more difficult to execute and heal.

The risks don't stop once the tattoo is done —  aftercare is extremely important .

"Even the smallest scratches can cause missing ink on the healed tattoo," said Schrøder. "So, when you get a fine line tattoo, you really have to be very mindful of how you treat your tattoo while it is healing and make sure you are using the correct moisturizer."

More on that below.

How to Make a Fine Line Tattoo Last

Placement is key.

"You have to make sure the skin in this specific area is good for making fine line tattoos," said Schrøder. "If the placement is not great, the tattoo will run out with the elasticity of the skin, or you risk that the tattoo will fade too quickly when exposed to too much sun or movement."

Some high risk areas are fingers, hands, and the neck.

Once that's settled, proper aftercare is a must to expedite the healing process. Foreverist Skincare was formulated specifically for tattoo aftercare in mind, and Boyle recommended using the brand's  A Complete Tattoo Care Kit , which includes the Foreverist Healing Cream, Hydrating Cream, and Brightening Day Protection SPF. Yes, you need to apply sunscreen to prevent your tattoo from fading.

Lastly, when — not if — your tattoo begins to fade, going in for touch-ups can help keep fine line tattoos looking clean and sharp. Schrøder suggested one of the things that can speed up fading is having dry skin, so keep it moisturized.

The Truth About How Fine-Line Tattoos Heal

Three years ago, you wouldn't have been able to scroll through Instagram without coming across friends, influencers, and celebs alike showing off their newest fine-line tattoos . These super dainty tattoos grew in popularity thanks to celebrity tattoo artists like Dr. Woo and Jonboy and their elegantly cool designs as seen on A-listers like Selena Gomez, Miley Cyrus, and Demi Lovato. But not all who took part in this trend are happy with the results a few years later.

TikTok is filled with videos of people showing off their now faded fine line tattoos. @thesnacmac posted a video on June 27 asking to see how different people’s fine line tattoos look after years of healing. "I keep seeing all the fine line, incredibly detailed, minuscule tattoos on my for you page, and they're so pretty, don’t get me wrong," she says. "But I just want to see one of those like a year out."

Many users have stitched this video, showing off their healed fine line tattoos with a mix of happy and displeased customers. "ALL tattoos bleed out over time," writes @fleshtattoos905 . "Fine line is a trend … but it won't save you. That's a big IF the tattoo doesn't fade to a blurry mess right away." In the accompanying video, the user shows off a variety of hand tattoos such as a small heart on their finger and an unrecognizable design on their thumb that might have once been a candle.

Then there are those who have used this video to defend fine line tattoos, showing off their healed designs still in great shape. "This whole dis on the fine line tattoo culture is only because a lot of tattooers can’t do fine line and if it’s done properly it’ll hold up just fine," Portland-based tattoo artist Parker Midnight said in one of the stitch videos.

So what exactly is the deal with fine line tattoos? Are they a bad idea or do they just get a bad rap? "I think that most people don’t know much about tattoos beyond the fact that they saw something they liked and now they want one," tattoo artist Martin Holbech from Iron & Ink explains.  If that's the case — then that's okay! But if you're looking for a bit of extra guidance through the process, especially when it comes to [single needle] fine line tattoos, then we're here to help.

  • Martin Holbech , Denmark-based tattoo artist at Iron & Ink studio
  • JK Kim, a New York-based fine line tattoo specialist at Ink & Water studio
  • Jason Schroeder, LA and Austin-based tattoo artist that also goes by Mr. Incognito
  • Gabby Pignanelli , a New York-based fine line tattoo specialist at Inked NYC studio
  • Rachel Maiman , MD, New York City-based board-certified dermatologist at Marmur Medical

Also known as fine-line tattoos, this style of tattoo refers to designs that use super skinny lines to create delicate, sometimes intricately detailed, designs. "Fine line simply describes the tattooing technique that artists use to create tattoos with very thin lines," JK Kim , a fine-line tattoo specialist based in Queens, New York says. "It wasn't necessarily its own category until the past decade, when celebrity tattoo artists like Dr. Woo and Jonboy gained popularity for the style. These days the term 'fine line' is used for any tattoo that uses mostly (if not all) very thin lines, usually on the smaller side in size.”

A lot of times these fine line tattoos are created with a needle that has one point instead of multiple. But that's not always the case. "Tattooers are able to mimic a single needle style with larger needles using three, four or five points 3, 4, 5 points," Kim explains. "There aren't set guidelines to how a single needle style tattoo is done, as long as the end result is that the lines are ultra-fine."

LA and Austin-based tattoo artist Jason Schroeder , aka Mr. Incognito, continues, "The 'single' needle term is technically incorrect 99 percent of the time," he says, crediting how difficult it is to master a single need technique as the reason many choose not to use it. "It is a very unforgiving tool that can cause a lot of damage if not used correctly." This includes bleeding, fading,  or completely disappearing.

The biggest issue people have with fine line tattoos is how they heal, so what exactly does that look like?

"Fine line tattoos, especially single needles, have the potential to heal more on the dark gray side," New York City-based single-needle tattoo artist Gabby Pignanelli explains. This is not the same thing as fading, which is when the ink looks inconsistent or nearly invisible in certain areas, though oftentimes the two can be confused as one another.

With that being said, Kim points out that fine line tattoos do tend to fade quicker due to the fact that the ink isn't as densely packed under the skin as with other thicker tattoos. This then makes it easier for your body’s immune system to attack and break the ink down before flushing it out of your system.

"Because the tattooing process creates tens of thousands of wounds, the tattooing procedure pushes the immune system into overdrive," board-certified dermatologist at Marmur Medical, Rachel Maiman MD, explains of the healing process. "In response to injury, the body rushes a team of blood cells called macrophages to the site of the tattoo to remove the ink particles that are now in the dermis." While some of these macrophages flush the ink particles out through the lymphatic system, others remain in the dermis, allowing the injected ink to remain visible.

Regardless of style, Maiman says that all tattoos heal in three steps. The first stage is inflammation, which lasts about 1-3 days. "At this stage, it is normal for a tattoo to be red, swollen, and tender," she explains. "It is also common for there to be some oozing of blood and/or ink." The second stage is when the top layer of skin peels, flakes or scabs and can last up to two weeks following the appointment. The final stage, which is about a month after the treatment, is much less visible but still ongoing. "The tattoo typically remains dark and somewhat dull, after which it takes on its more permanent vibrant color," she explains. "The skin continues to remodel underneath the tattoo for three to six months, after which tattoos are generally considered to be fully healed." Typically a tattoo is considered fully healed about three months after the appointment.

"We all love the bold, bright black look of a fresh tattoo, but as the ink settles into the skin, it's going to look a little different," Pignanelli continues. "Fine line or otherwise."

This is the point all the artists want to make: that it’s not just fine-line tattoos that heal differently. "All tattoos fade," Holbech says. "It's just a matter of how much and that depends on a variety of things." These things include someone’s skin, application, and, most importantly, aftercare .

As previously stated, all tattoos heal and age differently, including fine line tattoos However, there are a few things you can do to minimize fading or spreading.

Moisturize skin before and after the appointment to ensure your skin is at its healthiest. Post-appointment moisturization is crucial as it helps minimize the possibility of cracking, drying out, or bleeding. "A moisture sealing product 2-3 times per day should be applied diligently until the scabs have fully healed," Maiman says. However, she notes that most tattoo artists recommend avoiding occlusive petroleum-based emollients, saying these can actually damage newly acquired ink.

There are a lot of great products on the market formulated specifically to preserve ink, including Holbech's favorite, Sorry Mom Original Tattoo Balm .

Tattoo Balm

Another key step to preserving your tattoo is staying out of the water or sun following your appointment. In fact, sun exposure is a tattoo's worst enemy. "Prolonged exposure to the sun can be super harmful to the longevity of your tattoo," Maiman explains. "UV rays from the sun will penetrate the skin and essentially break down the pigments in the tattoo. Once those pigments are damaged, the tattoo will ultimately appear much lighter and less vibrant than it once did." If you are going out in the sun once the tattoo is fully healed, be extra proactive with your sunscreen application. That said, sunscreen is always necessary to protect your tattoo and help it age well.

Lastly, if you want to keep a fine line tattoo in tip-top shape, you may want to avoid high-motion areas such as the fingers or feet. Those finger tats a la Hailey Bieber can be chic, but are more likely to fade due to friction.

If you are interested in getting a fine line tattoo, there are some things to keep in mind before diving in, but the biggest overarching objective is to manage expectations. For instance, not all tattoos will work as fine line tattoos. "Just because it looks like it’s possible to do something minute on paper doesn’t mean it’ll work on skin," Kim says. “Trust your artist to tell you what’s doable.”

Which brings us to our next point: When it comes to any type of tattoo, but perhaps especially fine-line tattoos, the key to success is to find the right artist.

"I think clients sometimes assume that because fine line tattoos can be really small and simple, that they’re super easy to tattoo, and that’s not the case," Pignanelli stresses. "The smaller the needle, the more careful and precise you have to be. There’s little to no room for error because you’ll see it immediately. "Someone who is trained in single-needle tattoos can reduce the risk of scratchy lines, blowouts, or lines that completely disappear.

When it comes to finding these artists, social media is a good place to start. You can see the type of work they do and possible comments or tags from clients. Then once you nail down a few candidates, all the pros recommend asking to see photos of their work after they’ve healed. “Ask to see healed photos of tattoos, not just the fresh Instagram shots with nine different filters of contrast and sharpening,” Schroeder emphasizes.

Just because fine-line tattoos — and, well, all tattoos in general — change and age over time, don’t let it discourage you from getting the design you really want. "I have seen gorgeous fine line work that is over 30 years old," Schroeder says. "It is soft and gray but still has great definition and readability."

Those gorgeous, sharp designs you see on Pinterest, Instagram, and TikTok are fresh fine line designs that will look different one day — but different doesn't always mean bad. “Your tattoo will get a bit lighter or slightly thicker depending on how your body heals it,” Kim says. “Go with your artist’s suggestion regarding placement, size, and detail. They're the expert and are there to make your tattoo experience as fun, informative, and seamless as possible.

How to Tattoo Fine Lines

Fine line tattoos are designs made of very thin lines, often done with a single needle. This style of tattoo has become a very common trend after gaining popularity through celebrities like Hailey Bieber and Cara Delevigne, as well as social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram.

As fine-line tattoos gain popularity, it’s important to know how they are done and how they heal differently from “normal” tattoos.

Here’s what we’ll cover in this article:

  • What fine line tattoos are and how they differ from other tattoos
  • How to do fine line tattoos
  • Fine line tattoo design ideas

What Are Fine Line Tattoos?

Fine-line tattoos are subtle, thin tattoos that often include softer shading . While the thicker, bold lines that are common in traditional tattoos have been popular for decades, fine-line tattoos are quickly becoming very popular in the industry.

In order to get beautifully fine lines, the tattoo artist will use either a small needle grouping or even a single needle.

Many clients appreciate the delicate nature of fine-line tattoos, and the wide range of design options ranging from simple to very intricately detailed makes this type of tattoo very appealing.

Single Needle Tattoos

Most fine-line tattoos are done with a small needle grouping (like an 03RL) or even a single needle. Single-needle tattoos have been around for centuries, but are becoming more popular in recent years as people appreciate the subtle, refined look of the very thin lines they produce.

Skin behaves differently with a single needle, so it’s a good idea to practice fine-line designs before tattooing them on a person.

Fine Line Tattoos vs. Micro Tattoos

Micro tattoos (tattoos about the size of a quarter or smaller) are often fine-line tattoos that use a single needle.

Healing Fine Line Tattoos

fine line travel tattoo small

Fine-line tattoos go through the same healing process as tattoos with thicker lines and bold coloring, but they may heal faster. Fine-line tattoos may peel and itch less than normal tattoos because there is less ink packed into the space and less overall damage to the skin.*

*It is easier to go too deep in the skin and cause a blowout with a thinner needle because there is less surface area resistance. However, when tattooing at the proper needle depth, fine-line tattoos tend to heal faster.

Do Fine Line Tattoos Fade Faster?

fine line travel tattoo small

Because the lines are so thin and delicate, fine line tattoos may fade faster and need more touch-ups than other tattoos.

As with all tattoos, too much exposure to UV rays from sunlight can cause quicker fading. Clients should keep their tattoos out of the sun as much as possible and use sunscreen when their tattoos will be exposed.

How to Do Fine Line Tattoos

fine line travel tattoo small

Tattooing fine lines is hard because even a tiny shake looks huge in a thin line. Below, you’ll find a few tips for tattooing fine lines, as well as maintaining your stability while lining so you can eliminate any shakiness.

When you’re tattooing fine lines, you might want to use a bugpin needle. For example, using a bugpin 5 round liner will look like a standard 3 round liner, but the thinner needles will allow you to be a bit more precise.

Use Less Power

When you’re using a big liner, you need more power. A long stroke and a powerful machine will make it easier to push the line into the skin.

Check Your Cartridge

fine line travel tattoo small

Sometimes, needle cartridges (especially cheaper ones) will have a little extra “wiggle room” between the needle and the edge of the cartridge. This can cause the needle to bounce around inside the cartridge and make your lines look shaky.

While this can cause problems with a larger liner, it can completely ruin a fine-line tattoo because any shake in a thin line will look really big.

Use Three Points of Contact

fine line travel tattoo small

As mentioned above, even a small shake will look huge when you’re tattooing a thin line. To prevent shakiness, you can use three points of contact.

First, you’ll want to either tuck your elbow against your ribs or place it on the massage table. This stops any movement of your shoulders and upper arm from affecting your line work .

Second, you’ll place the palm of your tattooing hand against the skin. This makes sure you’re stable while you move the tattoo machine. “Hovering” your hand off the skin will make it much harder to control your tattoo machine .

Third, you’ll connect the pinky of your tattooing hand to the thumb of your stretching hand. Bringing in the extra help from your stretching hand will allow you to remain stable. You can also use this position to manually control your depth .

By placing your ring finger and pinky down on the skin, you can create a barrier that keeps your hand from letting the needle go too deep into the skin.

One of the hardest parts about tattooing thin lines is controlling the needle. Using three points of contact will make controlling the needle much easier.

Keep a Steady Pace

Avoid stopping in one area too long. It'll really tear up the skin. Instead, try to keep a steady pace while doing all of the line work.

Press Lightly

fine line travel tattoo small

You don’t want to press down on the skin super heavily like you would when shading. You don’t even want to press down how you normally would when lining with a regular liner. You want to just barely press into the skin and pull your line steadily.

Use Whip Shading

When shading a fine-line tattoo, you’ll probably want to stick with the same needle you used for your linework.

Because of their delicate nature, you’ll see lots of thin line tattoos on places like the fingers, neck, and feet. (A helpful rule of thumb is that small fine-line tattoos look best in areas where you might wear jewelry.) Check out the gallery below for fine-line tattoo ideas.

What you need to know before getting a fine line tattoo

By Carol Rääbus

Woman with red hair showing off a small fine line tattoo on her arm for a story about what you need to know before getting one.

  • X (formerly Twitter)

If you've seen the delicate script on Selena Gomez's side or Miley Cyrus's collection of tiny symbols and thought "I'd love me some micro tattoos", this is the article for you.

Fine line tattoos are a growing trend. Platforms like Instagram and Pinterest are overflowing with photos of small, simple designs and breathtakingly elegant art on skin.

I spoke with four tattoo artists who specialise in fine line tattoos and a dermatologist to get the dos and don'ts of this style of body art.

What are fine line and micro tattoos?

If you click on the hashtag #finelinetattoo on Insta, you'll see a lot of variety in look and style.

Adelaide-based artist Eloise Entraigues says fine line branched out from single needle tattoos.

"They are mainly black and grey … with very fine lines and lighter, softer shading if shaded at all," she says.

"Fine line tattoos can be of any size, but a popular trend at the moment is micro tattoos, the smaller lines allowing more detail in smaller areas."

I like the idea of tattoos, but I'm scared

Aside from the celebrity trend, part of the appeal of small, fine line tattoos is that they are quick to do and easy to hide.

Melbourne-based artist Zoe Clues says a small simple design can take 15 to 30 minutes to complete, as opposed to a larger full colour piece, for example, which can take hours.

"If it is painful, at least it won't be painful for long," she says.

Sydney-based tattoo artist, lobster god, says starting with a micro fine line design also gives you a chance to see if being tattooed is something you like.

"If [you're] a bit unsure about it, getting something small and fine is a good way to start."

I've heard fine line tattoos don't last. Is that true?

A woman showing a delicate fine line script tattoo on her ribs

All tattoos fade and blur a bit over time, say the artists.

The body's immune system very slowly removes parts of the ink that's been placed into the skin, and things like exposure to UV rays, or laser for professional tattoo removal, break down the ink into smaller pieces which allows the white blood cells to remove them.

"Any design having only soft and dark grey … will fade over time more than solid black," says Sydney-based artist Maxime Etienne.

"When an entire design is only grey, it could have the look of a real old tattoo after just a few years."

Tattoos on certain parts of the body can fade faster. Fingers, feet, knees and elbows can be difficult to heal and the skin regenerates faster on those spots, meaning that tattoo won't last as long.

What are the risks of a fine line tattoo?

A fine line tattoo of a blue wren with abstract design behind it. The tattoo covered most of the upper arm.

Sydney-based dermatologist Adrian Lim says because tattoos are breaking the skin, there will always be some risk of infection.

Tattoos in unprofessional settings can carry a risk of bloodborne infections, such as hepatis B or C, which is why modern tattoo shops follow strict hygiene routines.

If the tattoo needles go too deep into the skin, Dr Lim says there is a risk of scarring and some people can be prone to keloids .

It is also possible to be allergic to certain tattoo ink pigments , says Dr Lim.

"Red and yellow are the most problematic colours in terms of tattoo reactions," he says.

"Black tattoo (carbon) is least likely to cause allergic reactions."

Dr Lim says if you think you're having a reaction to a tattoo, see a dermatologist.

"Blow out" is something that can happen with all tattoos — it looks like a bruise near the tattoo.

Dr Lim says this happens when the ink leaks into the subcutaneous tissue, or fat.

This can happen when the tattooist goes too deep with a needle or lets too much ink into the skin, either by going too slow or going over the same area too many times, says Clues.

Dr Lim says it can also happen in areas where the skin is very thin, or places like elbows or knees where there's lots of movement.

OK, I want a fine line tattoo. How do I go about it?

Small black and grey tattoo portraits of dogs on the inside of a woman's arms.

Search online and social media to find an artist who specialises in the style you want and whose work you love. Many artists have Insta highlights showing their healed work, which is a good way to tell if they're good at what they do.

"This style of tattooing is technically very difficult," lobster god says.

"It looks really simple, but there's nowhere to hide. If a circle isn't perfect or a straight line has a little wobble in it, it's so obvious."

You can choose to get a piece of "flash" — designs the artist has pre-drawn. Some artists will only use their flash once when someone buys it, while others will tattoo the same designs over and over again.

Or you can work with an artist for your own custom design.

"It can help to collect a lot of reference images and examples of how you want your own tattoo to look," Clues says.

If you're going for a tiny tattoo, you may have to compromise on how much detail you can have, so listen to what the artist says will and won't work, explains lobster god.

What's the cost?

A hand in a purple glove shows how small a tattoo is of flowers and a bee.

Artists will either charge by the piece if it's a small design, or by the hour if it's a larger piece.

Tattoo shops tend to have a minimum set price to cover the costs of business, which does mean you could be looking at $150 or more for a tiny triangle on your ankle.

Lobster god says if the cost puts you off, you might not want to get tattooed.

"A tattoo is permanent; it doesn't have to get done every six weeks or whatever [like a haircut].

"It's a luxury and there's a luxury price attached to that."

This wins the most adorable tattoo award. If bold color is your thing, opt for a super fun cartoon-like pineapple with sunglasses for the ultimate beach-inspired tattoo.

Give a slight update to a minimal wave line tattoo with a small outline of a sun to really get that summer feel.

Sunny Vibes

Who doesn’t love a subtle ankle tattoo? Opt for a minimal outline of the sun’s rays for a line tattoo that will brighten each and every day.

Beach Vacay

If you want to mix a bunch of beach-inspired decals but still want that minimal line effect, this hits that perfect sweet spot. A fine line palm tree with colored water lines and a semi-filled orange sun makes a stunning trifecta.

Volcanic Magic

Inspired by Mount Fuji, the volcano tattoo has a red sun over it for an ethereal summer vibe.

Dive In Deep

This tattoo is pure art. The intricate detail of a swimmer diving against a water-colored splash of turquoise and orange is just gorgeous.

Sea Turtles

In black, grey, and white detail, this intricate design — seriously, the detail is unmatched — is a perfect ode to the beloved sea turtle.

Bring the sunshine with you everywhere you go.

Colored Line Art

Line art tattoos don’t always have to be done in black ink. If you’re opting for a literal beach design with palm trees, sand, and more, mix in some color to make your beach tattoo more dynamic.

Neon Lights

Elevate a simple line tattoo by thickening its lines a bit and shading them with bold neon colors.

Day And Night

Can’t decide between a sunny oceanic view or a night swim-themed tattoo? Add both a crescent moon and sun decal to your design and have the best of both worlds.

An abstract surfer’s board design like this one is a beach lover’s dream. Inside the broken board, there’s a colorful mix of yellow, orange, and blue that creates a unique sun and wave design.

Summer Drink

There’s nothing like drinking your favorite cocktail by the water with your toes buried into the sand. This martini-filled design will make you want to book the next flight to the beach.

Fresh Fruit

An ode to your favorite summer fruit? This orange inspiration is bold, unexpected, and delightfully bright.

Tiny Detail

This tiny palm tree design is the perfect minimalistic detail for you to celebrate the sea without going all out.

This tiny shell has beautifully intricate details give it more definition. Opt for something like this if you want to go the fine line, minimalistic route.

Double Palms & Waves

What’s better than one palm tree and wave? Two, of course. Go the double route to really emphasize your love of your favorite beach.

Pure Happiness

Mix a cartoon favorite — Buttercup of The Powerpuff Girls is always a great choice — with all your beachy faves for a nostalgic creation that will bring back childhood memories.

Why Fine-Line Tattoos Are a Minimalist Mainstay in Hollywood

Published on 6/22/2022 at 6:05 PM

NEW YORK, NEW YORK - MAY 02: Hailey Bieber attends The 2022 Met Gala Celebrating

As far as tattoo trends go, fine-line designs remain undefeated. The minimalist style first began gaining traction a few years ago with artists like Dr. Woo and JonBoy etching itty-bitty tattoos on A-list stars like Hailey Bieber, Zoë Kravitz , Yara Shahidi, and Hilary Duff , and the ink style is only growing in popularity.

Unlike the thicker and heavier-looking traditional tattoos that predate them, fine-line tattoos have become the go-to style for anyone looking to add a dainty or tiny design to their collection. Though still impactful and stunning, fine-line tattoos are typically much fainter by comparison to other tattoos due to their thin-line work.

If you're considering getting a fine-line tattoo, keep reading to learn more about the ink style from two tattoo artists.

What Are Fine-Line Tattoos?

Fine lines don't just look different from other tattoo styles — they're technically different, too. "A fine-line tattoo is done with a single needle or a really thin grouping of needles to create a really fine outline, as opposed to the traditional bold outline seen on tattoos of past generations," Ilia , a tattooist at High Hopes Tattoo in NYC, tells POPSUGAR.

You can get a variety of designs using the fine-line style, but the most popular are realism tattoos , which were a big trend prediction in 2020. "[They're] the most known for their fine-line tattoo style as they typically include a ton of tiny details."

Ultrafine tattoos are often compared to jewelry and really shine in places where you typically accessorize, like the wrist, the fingers, by the ears, the neck, and so on. They're widely loved because they "add to, but don't distract from, the rest of your 'look,'" Ilia says. Pobi , a tattoo artist at Ink & Water in NYC, adds: "Fine-line tattoos are a great choice if you're looking for dainty, delicate tattoos."

Fine-Line Tattoos vs. Traditional Tattoos: What's the Difference?

The biggest different between fine-line tattoos and other traditional tattoo styles is the look of the artwork — they're typically more subtle and delicate.

Though both hurt the same amount and take equally as long to do, the healing process is very different. "The tattoo will not scab nearly as much," Pobi says. "When a thicker tattoo heals, it is typical for the tattoo to scab over during the healing process; however, you will not notice this as much with finer-line pieces."

How Long Do Fine-Line Tattoos Last?

A key difference with fine-line tattoos is a matter of longevity. "They require more frequent touch-ups throughout their lifespan due to the small diameter of the needle not being able to pick up or deposit large quantities of ink," Ilia says. "Bolder, more detailed tattoos tend to hold up better over time simply because of the amount of ink in them and the body's inability to break down the pigment as quickly."

There's no one-size-fits-all answer to exactly how long your fine-line tattoo will last. "Everyone's body is different, and it will really all depend on a variety of factors on how the tattoo will heal," Pobi says.

This isn't necessarily a bad thing. Because of how faint the lines are, these tattoos are typically easy to add on to or modify if your tastes change or you just feel like changing things up. Another bonus: "Fine-line tattoos are also super easy to hide or overlook in conservative work environments," Ilia says.

Placement Is Important With Fine-Line Tattoos

You should put a lot of careful thought and consideration into any tattoo placement , but that's especially true with fine-line designs. "For the best immediate and long-term outcome, you'd want the tattoo to be somewhere that doesn't experience a lot of friction or damage from your environment," Ilia says.

Another important thing to note is that your fine-line tattoo may change slightly after it heals. "They never look quite as fine and dainty as they do on their first day" Ilia says. "Depending on your unique physiology and lifestyle, the tattoo can either fade significantly or spread to a width that you didn't anticipate." Though this happens with all tattoos, it can be more obvious because of the delicate nature of this style.

Are Fine-Line Tattoos Always Small?

Size matters with fine-line tattoos as well. "It can be harder to do much larger-scale pieces, like a full sleeve, with just a single needle," Pobi says. Less is more here. Ilia adds: "The more you try to fit in, the higher the chance the piece will look too busy or muddled with age." So keep it small and simple.

When in doubt, just chat with a professional tattoo artist who specializes in this delicate ink style.

20+ Globe Tattoo Ideas You Have To See To Believe!

Globe Tattoos

Table of Contents

In the intricate and intimate world of tattoos, where every inch of ink tells a unique story, few motifs are as universal and resonant as the globe. Embodied with layers of significance, from personal journey to geopolitical awareness, a globe tattoo serves as both a reflection of our interconnected world and the indelible mark of an individual’s place in it.

Globe Tattoo

This blog post delves deep into the world of globe tattoos, tracing their history, unraveling their symbolism, and presenting some of the most captivating designs available today. Whether you’re a seasoned tattoo aficionado or someone simply exploring the concept, by the end of this post, you’ll have a comprehensive understanding of why the globe stands out in a myriad of tattoo options and how it might find a special place on your own canvas.

Small Globe Tattoo

Small Globe Tattoo

Small-sized tattoos are often preferred by individuals seeking a minimalistic yet impactful representation. A diminutive design can encapsulate all the intricate details and profound meanings of a larger piece. A prime example is the delicate portrayal of our Earth adorned with floral elements. Such a design speaks volumes about the wearer’s profound appreciation for Earth’s myriad beauties, from the serenity of rivers to the grandeur of waterfalls.

American Traditional Globe Tattoo

American Traditional Globe Tattoo

The American traditional tattoo style is deeply rooted in the nation’s history, emerging predominantly during World War II. Today, it remains evergreen, with many opting for this iconic style characterized by its bold lines and vibrant hues. One such representation showcases a juxtaposition of a ship and a globe, signifying the wearer’s fearless spirit and love for discovery and adventure.

Innovative Globe Tattoo

Innovative Globe Tattoo

Tattoo enthusiasts often pursue innovative designs that weave together diverse elements they hold dear. A striking example is a design inspired by Keith Haring, the eminent American pop artist known for his animated, universally accessible imagery. Such a tattoo not only celebrates artistry but also invites others to design their unique globe tattoos with a fresh perspective.

Spiritual Globe Tattoo

Spiritual Globe Tattoo

The globe is a representation of our Earth, replete with its diverse inhabitants and landscapes. A spiritual take on this design might encompass symbols like meditating figures, intricate geometric patterns, and other spiritual motifs. Such a tattoo, like the one portraying Buddha meditating before a stylized Earth, highlights the wearer’s belief in a unifying divine force overseeing our world.

World Globe Tattoo

World Globe Tattoo

To capture the essence of the entire planet, creativity is paramount. A compelling design might layer a structural globe with the detailed map of our world. Monochromatic shades can underscore the holistic nature of Earth, while selective coloring can highlight specific regions of personal significance.

Globe Latitude Longitude Tattoo

Globe Latitude Longitude Tattoo

Latitude and longitude lines segment our world, offering precise location insights. For those who value this scientific marvel or are actively engaged in geographical studies, a globe design delineated by these coordinates makes for a fitting tribute. It’s a testament to the meticulous beauty of our Earth’s divisions.

Globe Tattoo With Flowers

Floral motifs can enhance any tattoo, infusing it with softer undertones and layered meanings. For instance, a globe encircled by red roses might symbolize the wearer’s fervent love and passion for the Earth and its countless mysteries.

Globe Tattoo For People With Wanderlust

For travel enthusiasts, a globe tattoo can be a testament to their boundless love for exploration. By incorporating symbols like airplanes or iconic landmarks, the design becomes a personalized narrative of one’s travel aspirations and cherished memories.

Snow Globe Tattoo

Ornamental snow globes are a cherished keepsake for many. Tattooing such a design offers ample creative latitude, from capturing the essence of winter to immortalizing a favorite locale or cherished memory, akin to the depicted snow globe tattoo.

Compass Globe Tattoo

Compass Globe Tattoo

Compass designs complement globe tattoos, symbolizing direction and exploration. When paired together, they signify not just a passion for travel but also a life journey dedicated to discovery. Whether the compass is positioned atop the globe or intertwined with it, such a design speaks of the wearer’s quest to find and forge their own path.

What Are The Potential Health Risks Of Getting A Globe Tattoo?

Getting a globe tattoo—or any tattoo for that matter—does come with potential health risks. While a globe tattoo doesn’t introduce any specific risks different from other tattoos, it’s essential to be aware of general tattooing risks. Here are some of the potential health risks of getting a tattoo:

  • Infection: If the tattooing equipment isn’t sterilized or if aftercare recommendations aren’t followed, there’s a risk of bacterial infections. Signs include swelling, redness, and pus.
  • Allergic Reactions: Some people might be allergic to tattoo dyes, especially red, green, yellow, and blue dyes. Allergies might cause an itchy rash at the tattooed area.
  • Scarring: If the tattooing process damages the deeper layers of the skin or if there’s an allergic reaction, it can lead to keloid formation, a type of raised scar.
  • Bloodborne Diseases: If the tattoo equipment is contaminated with infected blood, there’s a potential risk of transmitting diseases like Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, or even HIV.
  • MRI Complications: In some cases, tattoos might cause swelling or burning during Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI).
  • Granulomas: These are small nodules that can form around areas where the tattoo pigment resides, a reaction to the ink.
  • Ink Migration: Sometimes, the tattoo ink can migrate from the tattoo site to other areas of the body, leading to a cosmetic concern.
  • Toxicity Concerns: While rare, there have been concerns about the potential carcinogenic properties of some tattoo inks.
  • Dissatisfaction & Regret: Though not a physical health concern, some people regret their tattoo decisions, leading to the desire for removal, which can be expensive and painful.

It’s essential to understand that while these risks exist, many can be minimized or eliminated by choosing a reputable tattoo artist, ensuring the parlor follows strict hygiene and sterilization protocols, and adhering to aftercare instructions. Before getting a tattoo, it’s always recommended to consult with a healthcare professional, especially if one has pre-existing health conditions or concerns.

Are There Any Specific Tattoo Parlors Or Artists Recommended For Creating A Globe Tattoo?

While I can’t provide real-time recommendations on specific tattoo parlors or artists (as my last update was in September 2021), many renowned tattoo artists and parlors have gained international recognition for their exceptional work in various styles, which would include detailed works like globe tattoos.

When searching for an artist or parlor for a globe tattoo, consider the following general tips:

  • Specialization : Look for an artist who specializes in the style you’re interested in, whether that’s fine line, realism, traditional, or any other style.
  • Portfolio : Always check the artist’s portfolio, either online or in the studio, to see examples of their previous work and gauge their skill level and aesthetic.
  • Reviews : Read online reviews and get feedback from previous clients. This will provide insights into their professionalism, hygiene standards, and overall experience.
  • Consultation : Schedule a consultation with potential tattoo artists to discuss your design, size, placement, and any other specifics. This will also give you a feel for their professionalism and expertise.
  • Hygiene : Ensure the parlor prioritizes hygiene. Check for clean equipment, disposable needles, and gloves, and ensure the artist uses a new ink pot for every client.
  • Membership : Some artists are members of professional organizations like the Alliance of Professional Tattooists (APT), which emphasizes professional standards and education.
  • Word of Mouth : Recommendations from friends or acquaintances can be invaluable. If you admire someone’s tattoo, don’t hesitate to ask them about their artist.
  • Travel : If you’re committed to getting the best globe tattoo and have the means, consider traveling to another city or even country to get inked by a top artist in the field.

Many cities around the world have their own “star” tattoo artists or well-respected parlors, so the best recommendation would come from current local advice or specialized tattoo media. Always do thorough research and make sure you’re comfortable with your choice before committing.

How Do You Choose The Placement, Size, And Color Palette Of A Globe Tattoo With Future Body Changes In Mind?

Choosing the placement, size, and color palette for a globe tattoo while considering future body changes requires thoughtful planning. Body changes might include aging, weight fluctuations, and potential surgeries. Here’s a guide to making an informed decision:

1. Placement :

  • Flexibility : Some areas of the body might stretch or sag more than others over time due to weight gain, loss, aging, or pregnancy. To account for this, you might consider placing your tattoo on less flexible areas like the upper arm, upper back, or calf.
  • Sun Exposure : Tattoos on areas frequently exposed to the sun, like forearms and legs, might fade faster. If you decide on such a location, be prepared to protect your tattoo with sunscreen.
  • Visibility : If you’re concerned about potential professional settings, you might opt for a more discreet location.
  • Detail Preservation : If your globe tattoo design has intricate details, it’s wise to go for a larger size to ensure the details remain distinguishable over time. Smaller tattoos with intricate designs might blur together as skin changes.
  • Expandability : If you might want to expand your tattoo into a larger piece or a sleeve in the future, consider that when choosing its size and location.

3. Color Palette :

  • Skin Tone : Certain colors look more vibrant on specific skin tones. It’s vital to consult with your tattoo artist about which shades will stand out best on your skin.
  • Fading : All tattoos fade over time, but some colors might fade faster than others. Lighter colors like white, yellow, and light blue tend to fade quicker than darker hues. However, they can be refreshed with touch-ups.
  • Aging Considerations : As skin ages, it can become more translucent and may alter the appearance of the tattoo’s colors. Opting for a classic black and grey design might age more gracefully in such cases.

Future Body Changes :

  • Pregnancy : If you’re considering having children in the future, be aware that tattoos on the abdomen, hips, and breasts can stretch during pregnancy.
  • Weight Fluctuations : Tattoos on areas like the stomach, thighs, and upper arms might be affected by significant weight changes.
  • Aging : As mentioned, skin sags and loses elasticity with age. Opt for locations less affected by this, and consider simpler designs that will remain distinguishable.
  • Surgeries : If you anticipate surgeries, like breast augmentation or reduction, or anything else that might stretch or alter the skin, you should avoid tattooing those areas or consult with a medical professional beforehand.

In conclusion, while tattoos are a permanent commitment, with careful planning, they can remain a beautiful and meaningful part of your body throughout life’s changes. It’s essential to consult with experienced tattoo artists who can provide guidance tailored to your design and body.

In the vast tapestry of body art, globe tattoos occupy a special niche, offering wearers a means to express their connection to the world and its infinite wonders. While the allure of these designs is undeniable, it’s crucial to approach the tattooing process informed. Before embarking on this transformative journey, research credible tattoo parlors, consult experienced artists about your desired design, and be conscious of any potential health risks. By ensuring proper care and hygiene, complications can be minimized. Furthermore, the placement, size, and color palette should be chosen with deliberation, keeping future body changes in mind. Ultimately, a globe tattoo can be a powerful symbol of one’s worldview, adventures, and aspirations. With diligence and thought, this mark can become a cherished, lifelong emblem of one’s bond with our shared planet.

35 Amazing Russian Tattoos with Meanings

The land of Russia expands across the globe to form the biggest nation in the world. Similar to any other country, it has its positives and negatives, but politics don’t limit the world of tattoo art from thriving there. In a country notable for its diversity, congenial nature, picturesque wilderness, and intense history, tattoo artists take motivation from all around them. Today, let’s talk all about the universe of Russian tattoos, their applications, and even their uncommon style! Grab some tattoo balm and prepare for a tattoo of your own after studying these designs. This exhibit of the Russian tattoos shows off the diversity of the amazing Russian tattoo ideas one can choose from. Most famous Russian designs take their inspiration from the ancient prisoners who used tattooing to inscribe their identity. So sit back and keep scrolling!

Religious Russian Tattoo

Russian Tattoo

When people Google the implications of Russian tattoos, they seemingly want to discern the significance of Russian prison tattoos. Unlike American tattoos, nationalistic designs do not make up the bulk of it. Instead, theology takes the limelight and sparkles. The Russian Orthodox Church boasts 150 million members, although quite a few Russians migrated in order to continue the traditional form of Christianity that preceded it. The monasteries, church or cathedral, along with Virgin Mary, saints or angels show a peculiar kind of devotion to thievery. The skulls have a reputation for all things evil. Coffin, too, is associated with murder.

Temhota Designs

Russian Tattoo

‘Temhota’ means blackness or evil in Russian, and defendants and cons use the word to express their mafia-inspired tattoos. Russian mafia tattoo applications have their own glossaries. Giving an example, this tattoo might portray the myth of Prometheus confined to rock following the stealing of fire for humankind, but the sailboat on the sea gives it a deeper meaning. The tattoo shows everyone who sees it that ‘this man travels, steals, and escapes to tell the tale.’

Snake Around the Neck

russian tattoo

A snake around the neck anticipates drug addiction, the eight-pointed star (or rosette) suggests a thief identified all across the world, epaulets show haughtiness towards the administration, and the list goes on. On a note, a Nazi swastika does not significantly represent a Nazi sympathizer. Rather, the tattoo indicates that the prisoner resents the prison guards who act as Nazi generals towards them. Some prisons even ordered them to liquidate their tattoos because of this blow at their jurisdiction. No one likes getting called a Nazi.

Khokhloma Russian Designs

Russian Tattoo

Contrary to the sinister tattoo styles that the Russian Tattoos are famous for, Khokhloma Russian tattoos portray a form of art that is typical to Siberia. It is because of the ample of black ink used in this art form, they are perfect for tattoos too. The main colors of the Khokhloma that are gold and red, make for great patterns when it comes to tattoos. The usual themes include creatures like sparrow, roosters, pheasant, peacock, foxes, bears and something that is common for every tattoo, flower vines.

3D Tattoo Designs

Russian Tattoo

Of course, just like every other nation, Russian tattoo artists produce more than just conventional tattoo designs. They use a different type of 3D patterning that could give tribular designs a run for their business! They also use an unusual painting technique on their graphic tattoos. But, above all, they apply their inks to the best of their expertise. Without a qualm, Russia boasts of some of the world’s most famed tattoo artists! They even flaunt some unique tattoo studios and tattoo areas that help them with their astonishing work.

Russian Nesting Doll Designs

Russian Tattoos

A Russian nesting doll is a wooden toy that is played by youngsters and adults alike. Players should comprehend how to open the dolls to exhibit more petite figurines in each vessel without crushing them. The more petite the doll gets, the more critical it is to open. However, matryoshka dolls are not just a mechanism for educating children on how to sort out things and determine diverse colors and sizes because they have a symbolic meaning.

The largest doll is designated as a mother; hence, the name matryoshka. The more petite dolls, on the other hand, are the seeds. The biggest doll basically outlines a dominant female matriarch who is the central figure of the Russian family. The little dolls discovered inside the biggest figurine are its offspring. Therefore, matryoshka incorporates maternity and fertility.

Maternity and productivity are not the only connotations behind these dolls. It also symbolizes Russia as a country. The biggest figurine here is Russia while the smaller ones are the kids of Mother Russia or its citizens. Therefore, matryoshka or babushka dolls is someone who can cater to these things.

Matryoshka dolls can also mean life experiences. We are the big figurines, and the little trinkets inside each statuette are our encounters, anecdotes, and associations. We are human beings with distinctive occurrences. The tiny toys inside the doll represent our spirit, personifying integrity and the true essence of ourselves.

St. Basil Designs

Russian Tattoos

There is nothing that can scream Russia more than this babushka doll right next to St. Basil.

Russian Coat of Arms

Russian Tattoos

This tattoo consists of the Russian Federation’s coat of arms which, if you like, can also add with a picture of Yuri Dolgoruky on a horse next to the Moscow Kremlin’s Spasskaya Tower. The tattoo is quite traditional and reminds one of its roots.

Slavic Warriors

Russian Tattoos

This is the symbol of an ancient Slavic warrior that will look attractive no matter what as it resembles the tribal tattoo designs which are quite in vogue these days.

Soviet Cartoons

russian tattoo designs

Iconic Russian cartoons are another subject for body art. Check out this variant of “Tom and Jerry.”

Bunny Design

russian tattoo designs

A huge, robust bunny…or is it a hare?

Olympic Mascot

russian tattoo designs

Misha, the 1980 Olympic mascot of 1980, may seem delicate and cuddly, but we ensure some of the men donning the tattoo aren’t.

Russian Revolution Inspired Designs

russian tattoo designs

Russian Revolution was nothing minor, in fact it has a deep-rooted seat in everyone else’s hearts. Vladimir Lenin, therefore, must have had a huge fan following and so he is also a popular choice for tattoo designs too.

What was once a humble market square has become known as the place where rebels have been executed, protests staged and military strength put on show throughout Russia’s tumultuous history.

However long you’re visiting Moscow for, you must set aside some time to soak up the archetypal image of Russia’s capital with the glistening rainbow roofs of St Basil’s Cathedral. The onion-shaped domes were designed to make the building look like flames on a bonfire. The cathedral was commissioned in the 1500s by Ivan the Terrible and according to legend, the Tsar thought it so beautiful he ordered that the architect be blinded so they would never surpass this creation.

The love-it-or-hate-it of Russia attractions, Lenin’s Mausoleum houses a glass sarcophagus containing the embalmed body of the legendary Russian revolutionary, Vladimir Lenin. First opened to the public in August 1924, the Mausoleum attracts around 2.5m visitors a year, who presumably don’t mind queueing and going through a thorough search to enter Lenin’s presence.

State Historical Museum

An attraction in its own right, the State Historical Museum, founded in 1872 by Ivan Zabelin and Aleksey Uvarov, was once the principal medicine store, also containing antiquaries owned by the royal family. It now houses an impressive collection, which includes relics of prehistoric tribes that once inhabited the territory of present-day Russia, the country’s largest coin collection, as well as 6th-century manuscripts and artworks collected by the Romanov dynasty, among other treasures.

Behind the walls that once served as a fortress, there are four cathedrals with a fascinating icon collection and a venerable cemetery. Back in the day it was common for women from noble families to retire in monasteries, and the Novodevichy Convent had some notable residents such as Princess Sophia and Eudoxia Lopukhina, both related to Peter the Great (and imprisoned by him). The former was his half-sister who claimed the throne; the latter was his first wife, who stood in the way of his marriage to Catherine I.

Cathedral of Christ the Saviour

One of Russia’s most visited cathedrals, Christ the Saviour is a truly remarkable site. The grandiose cathedral was built in the 1990s where a 19th-century church of the same name stood before it was demolished in 1931 by the Soviet authorities. Designed to look like its predecessor, the modern building also contains the icon Christ Not Painted by Hand by Sorokin, which survived the demolition of the original cathedral. The cathedral was the site of feminist punk collective Pussy Riot’s 2012 protest that led to the imprisonment of several members.

  • DebbJ 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Great way to get oriented to Moscow We started our Moscow experience with the hop on hop off. It was a great way to get orientated to the city. The additional optional tours were also good, we did the Metro tour which I highly recommend, we also paid for the Kremlin tour. The hop on hop off has three different lines all included. Only fault was the bus was sometimes full and you had to wait for the next one which was about 15 minutes (in the cold). Read more Written January 6, 2020

  • BeverleyT 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Boat trip - TERRIBLE We got on the bus, but couldn’t buy a 1 day ticket. They suggested we do the 1 hour boat trip and said they would drop us to the dock. 1) they dropped us in the wrong place 2) they were lost because of the marathon Then the boat, after we finally found it: 1) stinking fumes, actually gagging 2) no commentary, in fact, no interaction unless you begged 3) offered us 2 for 1 icecreams as they had melted and refrozen as the fridge gets turned off at night Honestly, we enjoyed the afternoon in the boat but spent all of it laughing at just how awful it was!!! The worst thing in Moscow! Read more Written August 18, 2019
  • niruDurbs 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Not the best value for the price The ticket is quite expensive and covers three different routes in a 24 hour period. The red route is quite exciting and takes about an hour. The bus comes every 10 to 15 minutes. However the other two routes take about two hours each and buses come every 30 to 40 minute period. If the bus is full then you have to wait at the stop for the next bus. So personally I feel that not much can be seen this way. I definitely was not impressed. However it must be noted that one can learn a lot about the history of Moscow Read more Written July 3, 2019

  • Rebecca J 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Boat element was excellent We purchased a ticket online for the boat and bus for 2 days. The boat element was wonderful, we saw some amazing parts of Moscow along the river side. The bus element was very disappointing as it only started at 10am and was finished by 6:30pm. It was extremely warm when we were there and it would have been great to do the tour in the cool of the day. There was also no air conditioning in the down stairs part of the bus. They also turned away passengers at one of the stops as the bus was full and there was not another bus for 40 minutes. Read more Written September 26, 2018

  • Peter F 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Two Routes There is a short red route which depending on the traffic takes about an hour. The route is generally around the Red Square area. The ear phones were small and sometimes the commentary did not link up with the sites you were seeing. The green bus takes you on a longer route and ours took two and a half hours due to the heavy traffic. I would not recommend this trip unless it is raining or you want to fill in time. The sights we saw were nothing outstanding with plenty of time at certain stops for photos. Also the driver stop for a bite to eat at one stop. Read more Written July 30, 2018

The girl on the picture-light blue bag-ask for 100 Rubles for show her the QR Code while I had the Booking and PIN number cause she must see the vessel name-Didn’t say nothing and after she said board any vessel. • Kathrynowl91 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Good way to see some sites We usually do these tours when we travel. They get you round and you see the sight . Just a note people don’t queue here when the bus comes it’s a bit of a free for all. Read more Written July 13, 2018

The bus didn't stop at many points. Were were unaware a couple of times at what point we were and missed them. Headphones and maps were provided. Would recommend one should check out the route map before going and decide which places to stop in advance, this way one can manage and enjoy the tour more and us it more effectively.! • WilliamDyer 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Poor service on boat and too many waiting times on buses For the price, you should expect at minimum English speaking tour guides with decent experience, but at least in my case that did not happen both in buses and boats. And in the boat even tough we were 90% English speaking tourist at least, the tour guide spoke 95% of the time in Russia, and only 3 sentences in English, I really counted how many times she spoke in English. And at the end she asks us if we have any questions? Of course I told her I couldn’t ask her anything since I didn’t understand 95% of what she was saying. The boat tour is not worth it, just take the bus that would be my advice. Second minus is the waiting times, in the boat they made us wait an hour before it departed, and in many stops with the buses waiting times of 20-30 minutes. I actually think I lost that day around 2 hours doing nothing. Be careful. Read more Written July 10, 2018
