Incredibly frustrating experience!

Not sure why your app does not notify of changes to seats we’ve booked for months. Went to check in and saw my wife and I were separated by 12 rows AND on opposite sides of the 787, without any notification. This is unacceptable and too easy to remedy. A simple e-mail or text would suffice to let me know to work this issue, but no, you just separate us without a word! Then, spent 50 minutes on hold to change seats way back in economy and had to ask to get economy plus bundle refunded. Now on hold to talk to a supervisor because the representative is not authorized to do anything other than change seats and give us a refund of our bundle. Though she was very nice and efficient (after 50 minutes on hold) she was not authorized to do anything to bring me back as a customer. I am reconsidering United as my preferred airline. This has been incredibly frustrating. Oh, and to register a complaint, I have to go to your website and “fill out a form.” I would expect to be contacted by a customer service rep directly after this poor service. Sincerely, Thomas Lawhead

Great Agent Frustrating online system

And checking in I had two experiences: the first was online, and was extremely frustrating, and did not provide options, reflecting my personal circumstances. Additionally, I couldn’t find a phone number for customer service while I was trying to check in and encountering problems, me so I had to engage a separate search. The second experience wash great: with the help from your agent Gretchen. Gretchen positively delightful. I explained my handicap to her and she help me find appropriate accommodation. She however didn’t have authority to help me with the United online system failure regarding my baggage check. Luckily with her help and encouragement, iI reengaged the online check in. I want to make a special point of stating that with Gretchen’s help and courtesy, what seemed on the verge of becoming a very bad experience ruined to a satisfying one. She was very charming and polite and found creative way to sort out my personal problem. The problem she was not able to help me with, is my coming that comparing United economy class, to those of other airlines like Jet Blue, American Southwest Delta, and and all the international airlines I use. The best airlines (Southwest, Jet Blue, Jet Blue, for example allow economy customers one free, checked bag, and addition to the carry-on. Except for the lovely agent, Gretchen, I was very disappointed in United Airlines performance so far with regards to this flight.

App Devs - Hope you read

I dislike leaving a “review” when I really need to submit a product complaint, but United leaves me no other obvious choice to submit feedback about the app. Overall, it’s a great app. But now that you must put in your card information into the app in order to make purchases on board, there’s a problem. I am NOT going to verify my card every time I check in for a flight. That’s just stupid. I do it once, and that should be it. I take at least two flights a week on United. So at least twice a week I’m being asked to verify a card that I verified less than 4 days ago. You may say that “we need to verify the card is still in your possession” or some other reason. Sorry. But that’s your problem. If you require us to use the app instead of presenting a card, then there are certain risks you accept. Sure. Some guy that flys once a year? Make him verify the card. Your Platinums? Stop hassling us. It’s easier for me to skip on board purchases than to have to go through a verification every time I check in. Especially since I have to click all the extra boxes now because some people are too stupid to know to not fly if they have Covid and that they have to wear a mask. I hate the dumbing down of America to its lowest common denominator. So ease up on the card verification or go back to taking cards in flight.

Introduction

Are you planning your next adventure or business trip with United Airlines? If so, you’ll definitely want to take advantage of their convenient trip management feature that allows you to add your upcoming trips to your United account. By adding your trips to your account, you can enjoy a seamless travel experience, stay updated with flight details, and even earn valuable rewards.

In this article, we will guide you through the step-by-step process of adding a trip to your United account. Whether you’re a frequent flyer or a first-time traveler with United Airlines, this simple process will help you stay organized and make the most of your travel experience.

Adding a trip to your United account offers a range of benefits. First and foremost, it allows you to access all your trip details in one place, making it easy to view your flight information, check-in online, and track any changes to your itinerary. Additionally, by associating your trips with your United account, you can earn valuable MileagePlus rewards, including bonus miles, elite status qualification, and access to exclusive airport lounges.

Now that you understand the benefits of adding a trip to your United account, let’s dive into the step-by-step process to make sure you can take advantage of this convenient feature.

Step 1: Sign in to your United account

The first step to adding a trip to your United account is to sign in to your account on the United Airlines website. If you don’t have an account yet, you can easily create one by clicking on the “Sign In” option and selecting “Create account.”

Once you’re on the sign-in page, enter your MileagePlus number or your email address, followed by your password. If you’ve forgotten your password, don’t worry! You can easily reset it by clicking on the “Forgot password” link and following the instructions provided.

After entering your credentials, click on the “Sign In” button to access your United account. If you have enabled two-factor authentication, you may need to provide the verification code that’s sent to your registered email or phone number.

Signing in to your United account ensures that you have the necessary permissions to manage your trips and add them to your account. It also ensures the security and privacy of your personal information.

Once you have successfully signed in, you’re ready to move on to the next step and add your trip to your United account.

Step 2: Navigate to the “Manage Reservations” section

Once you’ve signed in to your United account, the next step is to navigate to the “Manage Reservations” section. This section allows you to view and manage all your current and upcoming trips with United Airlines.

To access the “Manage Reservations” section, look for the menu options at the top of the page. Depending on the website layout, you may find it under a tab labeled “My Trips” or “Manage.” Click on this tab to expand the dropdown menu and select the “Manage Reservations” option.

Alternatively, you can use the search bar on the website and type “Manage Reservations” to quickly access the relevant section.

Once you’re in the “Manage Reservations” section, you’ll see a list of your existing trips with United Airlines. This includes both upcoming trips and any previous trips you may have taken. The trips will be organized chronologically, with the nearest departure dates displayed at the top.

From here, you can view details about each trip, such as your flight numbers, departure and arrival times, and the booking reference number. This information will help you identify the specific trip you want to add to your United account.

Stay tuned for the next step, where we’ll guide you on how to select the trip you want to add to your account.

Step 3: Select the trip you want to add to your account

Now that you’re in the “Manage Reservations” section of your United account, it’s time to select the specific trip that you want to add. This step is crucial to ensure that you’re adding the correct itinerary to your account.

Scan through the list of trips displayed on the page and find the one you want to add. The trips are typically organized by date, with the closest departure at the top. Take note of the flight details, including the flight number, departure and arrival times, and the origin and destination cities, to avoid adding the wrong trip.

Once you have identified the correct trip, click on it to access the trip details. This will typically expand the trip information, allowing you to view additional information such as seat assignments, flight status, and any available upgrades for the selected trip.

Before proceeding to the next step, ensure that the trip you have selected matches your intended choice. Double-check the dates, flight numbers, and other relevant details to confirm that you have chosen the correct trip for addition to your account.

Now that you have selected the trip you want to add, it’s time to move on to the next step and click the “Add to My Account” button.

Step 4: Click on the “Add to My Account” button

After selecting the trip you want to add to your United account, the next step is to click on the “Add to My Account” button. This will associate the selected trip with your personal account, allowing you to access all the relevant information and benefits associated with your booking.

Look for the “Add to My Account” button on the trip details page. The button is usually located prominently, near the top or bottom of the page. It may be labeled as “Add to Account,” “Save Trip,” or a similar variation, depending on the United Airlines website design.

Clicking on the button will trigger a confirmation prompt. This prompt will remind you that adding the trip to your account will give you convenient access to flight details, check-in options, and other trip management features.

Review the prompt and ensure that you want to proceed with adding the trip to your account. If you are certain, click “Confirm” or “Add” to complete the process. If you changed your mind or accidentally clicked the button, you can always click “Cancel” or navigate away from the page without adding the trip.

After confirming your selection, the system will process the request and add the trip to your United account. You may see a loading screen or a success message indicating that the trip has been successfully added.

With the click of a button, you have successfully added the selected trip to your United account. Now, let’s move on to the next step to learn how to view your added trip in your account.

Step 5: Confirm the addition of the trip to your account

Once you have clicked on the “Add to My Account” button, it’s important to confirm that the trip has been successfully added to your United account. This step ensures that you can confidently access all the trip details and benefits associated with your booking.

After clicking the confirmation button, you will typically be redirected to a new page or a refreshed trip details page. This page serves as a confirmation that the trip has been added to your account. You may also receive a confirmation email or notification to further validate the addition.

On the confirmation page, you should see the trip details displayed prominently. This includes the flight number, departure and arrival times, and the booking reference number. Take a moment to review these details and compare them with your intended trip to ensure accuracy.

If you have multiple trips in your account, you may also see a list of all your added trips. This allows you to easily access and manage all your trips from one centralized location within your United account.

It’s important to note that the timing of the confirmation may vary depending on the United Airlines website and system processing. In some cases, the confirmation may be instant, while in others, it may take a few moments to update your account.

Once you have confirmed the addition of the trip to your account, you can proceed to the final step to view your added trip in your United account.

Step 6: View your added trip in your United account

Now that you have successfully added the trip to your United account, it’s time to see it in action! Viewing your added trip in your United account allows you to access all the essential information, manage your itinerary, and make necessary changes if needed.

To view your added trip, navigate back to the “Manage Reservations” section of your United account. This is the same section we referred to in Step 2 where you initially selected the trip to add to your account.

Once you are in the “Manage Reservations” section, you should see the list of all your trips, including the newly added trip. Look for the trip that you added, and you will see the flight details, booking reference number, and other relevant information.

Click on the added trip to expand the trip details and access additional options. This will allow you to view specific flight details, such as the departure and arrival times, seat assignments, and any available upgrades. You may also have the option to check-in online, manage your baggage, or make changes to your booking, depending on the features available.

Within your United account, you can also explore additional functionalities associated with your trip. This includes accessing boarding passes, receiving real-time flight updates, and earning MileagePlus rewards if you are a frequent flyer.

By having your trip added to your United account, you can enjoy the convenience of having all your travel information in one place. This eliminates the need to search through emails or visit multiple websites to access essential details related to your journey.

Take a moment to explore the various functionalities and options available for your added trip within your United account, and make the most out of your travel experience.

With Step 6 completed, congratulations! You have successfully learned how to view your added trip in your United account. Now, you can stay organized, access important travel information, and enjoy all the benefits offered by United Airlines.

United Airlines announces miles pooling, seat preference alerts in new updates

my trips united

United Airlines announced two updates this week aimed at making travel easier.

The airline is introducing a new way to collect and share miles among friends and family, known as miles pooling, and an app feature that will help you secure your preferred seat onboard.

According to United both features are about providing better value and flexibility to customers and are aimed at helping flyers tailor their trips to their own preferences.

Here’s what travelers need to know about the announcements and how to take advantage of the new features.

What is miles pooling?

United’s new MileagePlus feature allows frequent flyer program members to share miles with each other.

"We're always looking for new ways to provide the most value to all of our loyalty members," Luc Bondar, Chief Operating Officer of MileagePlus said in a statement . "MileagePlus miles pooling further reinforces United's position as the leader in family and group travel and gives our members more flexibility to use their miles while making it easier to connect to the destinations and moments that matter most, with the people that matter most."

The program allows groups of up to five people to share redeemable miles and apply the pot toward the price of a reward ticket.

According to United, here’s how the program works:

Any MileagePlus member age 18 or older can become a group leader and can invite up to four other members of any age into the pool. Members can transfer their miles to the pool by following instructions on the airline’s website or app.

“If a group of friends is planning an upcoming summer getaway and each friend has their own individual MileagePlus accounts with their respective number of miles, they can combine all, or a select amount of their personal miles into one central 'pool' that can be used to purchase flights and offset the cost of ticket prices,” the airline’s announcement said.

There is no limit to how many miles can be contributed to the pool.

Check out United’s website for full terms and conditions of the program.

How do seat alerts work?

The new feature in United’s mobile app lets you set your seating preferences so you’ll be notified if the one you like becomes available.

United began rolling out the option Friday.

It allows passengers to request their desired seat type (aisle, window or middle, including exit or bulkhead rows).

United will automatically change you to your preferred seat type if it becomes available up to 12 hours before departure and will notify you of the change.

“With up to three million users interacting with the United mobile app daily, United is continuing to bring helpful features to its app, and this is just the latest new app feature that gives customers more options and makes travel a breeze,” a statement from the airline said.

United Airlines flight credits: Everything you need to know

Zach Honig

Editor's Note

Update: Some offers mentioned below are no longer available. View the current offers here .

Like many other carriers United Airlines has eliminated change fees on many flights and has been issuing credits for canceled trips since the height of the pandemic.

Following COVID-related cancellations, travelers have had to learn to navigate the world of travel credits in a serious for the very first time. And, whether or not it's the airline's intention, the intricacies of these various carrier-specific certificates can add yet another layer to the already complex process of booking a flight.

In most cases, if United cancels your flight, you're eligible for a refund to your original form of payment. Meanwhile, if you are the one making the choice not to travel, you'll most likely end up with what the airline calls a "future flight credit," or an Electronic Travel Certificate (ETC), which are two different instruments.

Both types of credits can be used to book new travel, but there are some important nuances to note. For instance, future flight credits are valid for less time. They also can't be redeemed for someone else unless you purchased your ticket on or before Aug. 31, 2021.

After reading this guide, you'll walk away with a better understanding of United's various flight credits, and how you can redeem them when booking a flight.

For more TPG news delivered each morning to your inbox, sign up for our daily newsletter .

Accruing electronic travel certificates

Of United's two flight credit offerings, electronic travel certificates are the most useful since they're valid for longer (two years from the issue date) than future flight credits. They can also be combined with other ETCs and can be redeemed for travel for someone other than the person whose original trip was changed. In short, they're basically like money that you just happen to have to spend on United.

United customers who have experienced various service lapses are likely already familiar with ETCs. You'll receive one whenever the airline issues any form of monetary compensation — an extra-long delay, broken in-flight entertainment system, involuntary denial of boarding and so on.

Until recently, customers taking advantage of United's free-change policy had been able to request an ETC when voluntarily canceling a flight. The airline has since made that process a bit more complicated , but you may still be eligible for a certificate instead of a future travel credit. You'll need to speak with a reservations agent at (800) 864-8331 to make the request.

Redeeming electronic travel certificates

United now lists travel credits on the "My account" page, which you can access right here when logged into your MileagePlus account. Unfortunately, the airline's website only seems to track a portion of a customer's available ETCs — I keep mine organized in a spreadsheet, and I recommend you do the same.

my trips united

ETCs can be redeemed for travel operated by partners, as long as at least one segment in the itinerary is operated by United and United Express.

If you've selected an eligible flight, you'll see an option to redeem your ETCs on the payments page. Certificates can be used to cover the cost of seat assignments when selected during the purchase process, too, which adds another layer of usefulness.

Related: Here's what to do if you need to cancel your trip

ETCs can be used multiple times — if the flight costs less than the value of the certificate, the balance will remain on your account. If you're purchasing a higher-cost flight, you can combine ETCs with a credit card payment to cover the difference.

my trips united

After you successfully enter an ETC, including the year issued, 10-digit PIN code and the recipient's last name, you'll see the amount deducted from your flight total.

my trips united

United recently added the ability to combine up to 10 ETCs on the airline's website. Alternatively, you can call the reservations line at (800) 864-8331 to have your certificates combined over the phone. Just note that when combining certificates over the phone, the expiration date may be updated to 24 months from the date the oldest ETC was issued, not 24 months from the date your ETCs are combined, so that's something to keep in mind.

Future flight credit

Unlike ETCs, future flight credits can be used to cover the cost of partner flights, even those without a United flight on the same itinerary, as long as those flights are available to book via United, either on United's own website or by calling reservations at (800) 864-8331.

These credits can normally only be used by the traveler whose name was on the original reservation. However, United is allowing credits issued for tickets purchased on or before Aug. 31, 2021, to be used to book travel for others.

To view your current future flight credits, log in to United's website then head to the "My trips" page right here . From there, click the "Future flight credit" tab and select the "Book with credit" option to book a new trip.

my trips united

Unfortunately, I haven't had success redeeming future travel credits for revenue tickets online — you can always give reservations a call at (800) 864-8331 to rebook if you receive an error, such as the one I've repeatedly encountered below.

my trips united

For a while, if you moved to a lower-cost flight, you lost any residual value. Luckily, United backtracked on this strict restriction in April 2021. You'll now get a new future flight credit when rebooking to a less expensive flight.

The same applies when using the future flight credit tool to rebook canceled award tickets. If your new flight requires fewer miles or a lower cash co-pay, you'll receive a refund for the balance once you reissue the ticket.

my trips united

Your first instinct may be to cancel and redeposit the award, for added flexibility, but if you had been able to lock in a lower-rate award with your original booking, it may be advantageous to call in and request an agent's help in making the change.

If United canceled your original flight and the airline still offers service between the same cities on your new travel date, a reservations agent may be able to reissue your award in the originally ticketed cabin at the original rate.

Related: Guide to the United MileagePlus program

For example, since United was responsible for the cancellation, in my case, an agent may be able to honor my original 60,000-mile award rate between Newark (EWR) and Dublin (DUB), even if a similar award is priced higher on United's website today. There's never any guarantee, but it's certainly worth making the request.

Meanwhile, if you're looking to book a cash fare, you may be able to call United reservations at (800) 864-8331 to have your future flight credit canceled, with the balance issued in the form of an ETC, instead. That's certainly your best bet if you're looking to move to a lower-cost flight, or prefer to use your credit to book travel for someone else.

United TravelBank

United offers a third type of travel credit, via the airline's TravelBank . Customers purchase these credits directly — they're not issued following a customer service complaint or flight cancellation. It's also possible to boost your balance with the since-discontinued United TravelBank Card.

The information for the United TravelBank Card has been collected independently by The Points Guy. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.

Generally, it doesn't make sense to tie up funds without some sort of additional return, but United does occasionally offer incentives for customers to add funds to their TravelBank, in the form of a percentage bonus or fixed mileage earnings, such as 5 miles for every dollar spent .

TravelBank funds can be redeemed for flights operated by United and United Express. Unfortunately, they cannot be combined with ETCs or future flight credits, and, since they offer the longest validity, I'd use up any other credits before tapping your TravelBank.

Related: Hotel and airline elite status extensions stretching into 2023

Expiration policy

While United miles no longer expire , all of the carrier's travel credits are subject to expiration as follows:

  • Electronic Travel Certificates: 24 months from issue date*
  • Future flight credit: 12 months from original ticket issue date**
  • TravelBank: 5 years after last activity

*All electronic certificates due to expire prior to Dec. 31, 2022, will be extended until Dec. 31, 2022. **Future flight credits issued on or before Dec. 31, 2021, will be valid until Dec. 31, 2022

So keep these policies in mind if you have a few different types of credit since you'll want to use the ones expiring soonest first.

Bottom line

Navigating United's various travel credits and policies can seem daunting, and perhaps needlessly complex. Still, armed with this guide, you should have a much better idea of how to identify which credits you have at your disposal, and how to make the most of them when booking your next trip.

When flying United Airlines, Star Alliance and United partner flights, be sure that your MileagePlus number is attached to the reservation and appears on your boarding pass. If you want to redeem those valuable miles for a free trip, it can pay off to make sure they post to your account in the first place.

If they don't, here’s exactly how to add past flight miles to United MileagePlus.

Claim United miles for past flights on the airline

Head over to United's website to request missing miles from a United flight. You'll need to log in to your MileagePlus account to submit your request.

Your ticket number, which begins with 016 on United tickets, is all you need. Occasionally, United may request a copy of your boarding pass and receipt.

Input your ticket number and hit "Submit."

my trips united

Request missing miles for flights on Star Alliance and partner airlines

To claim missing miles on Star Alliance or partner airlines, head over to the same page on United's website . You may be asked to provide details like destination and departure city or fare class.

Ticket numbers for partner airlines may have a different prefix than 016, which United tickets have. United also advises that travelers wait at least seven days for miles to post before trying to get credit for past flights by submitting a missing mileage request.

Travelers can retroactively request United miles from partner flights in the past year. Those who haven't joined MileagePlus yet can still join and retroactively request miles from the past six months’ flights.

Be aware that not all partner flights are eligible for earning mileage. You can check your airline and fare class paid on United's airline partners page .

ARE YOU EARNING ALL THE MILES YOU CAN?

A United Airlines credit card not only allows you to earn more miles when you fly United, but in many cases gives you additional miles for everyday spending. On top of that, United cards offer day-of-travel benefits and other perks that can more than make up for their annual fee. Options include:

How to travel around the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse in Baltimore: A look at the traffic impact and alternate routes

By Rohan Mattu

Updated on: March 27, 2024 / 7:50 PM EDT / CBS Baltimore

BALTIMORE -- The collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore early Tuesday  led to a major traffic impact for the region and cut off a major artery into and out of the port city.

A bridge column was hit by a large container ship around 1:30 a.m., sending bridge workers and vehicles into the Patapsco River. A water search for six missing workers turned to a recovery effort Tuesday night.

Drivers are told to prepare for extra commuting time until further notice.

Locator map showing the typical traffic routes of cargo vessels passing beneath the bridge and the trajectory Dali followed prior to the allision.

Alternate routes after Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse

Maryland transit authorities quickly put detours in place for those traveling through Dundalk or the Curtis Bay/Hawkins Point side of the bridge. The estimated 31,000 who travel the bridge every day will need to find a new route for the foreseeable future.

The outer loop I-695 closure shifted to exit 1/Quarantine Road (past the Curtis Creek Drawbridge) to allow for enhanced local traffic access.

The inner loop of I-695 remains closed at MD 157 (Peninsula Expressway). Additionally, the ramp from MD 157 to the inner loop of I-695 will be closed.

Alternate routes are I-95 (Fort McHenry Tunnel) or I-895 (Baltimore Harbor Tunnel) for north/south routes.

Commercial vehicles carrying materials that are prohibited in the tunnel crossings, including recreation vehicles carrying propane, should plan on using I-695 (Baltimore Beltway) between Essex and Glen Burnie. This will add significant driving time.

Where is the Francis Scott Key Bridge?

The Key Bridge crosses the Patapsco River, a key waterway that along with the Port of Baltimore serves as a hub for East Coast shipping.

The bridge is the outermost of three toll crossings of Baltimore's Harbor and the final link in Interstate 695, known in the region as the Baltimore Beltway, which links Baltimore and Washington, D.C.

The bridge was built after the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel reached capacity and experienced heavy congestion almost daily, according to the MDTA.

Tractor-trailer inspections

Tractor-trailers that now have clearance to use the tunnels will need to be checked for hazardous materials, which are not permitted in tunnels, and that could further hold up traffic.

The MDTA says vehicles carrying bottled propane gas over 10 pounds per container (maximum of 10 containers), bulk gasoline, explosives, significant amounts of radioactive materials, and other hazardous materials are prohibited from using the Fort McHenry Tunnel (I-95) or the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel (I-895).

Any vehicles transporting hazardous materials should use the western section of I-695 around the tunnels, officials said.
