Does anyone know if you can add adaptive cruise control to my 2009 A4 B8. I have cruise control but I was wandering if it’s possible to upgrade to adaptive as there are icons on the dash that seems like it can be an option.

Can be done, but its not cheap at all. It's not a simple coding option, needs numerous parts.

(Instrument Cluster is the main cost at around £900 + VAT new). Click to expand...

My cluster has the distance display and the light for if it’s activated but I would need the sensor and the distance toggle cruise control stick and possibly the loom

You will need new steering stalks, bumper radar sensor (this has component protection) and wiring loom. The clocks appear to have the lights fitted but the SMD LEDs and resistors are not soldered to the board for the 2 central lights. There is also a ring of LEDs around the speedometer, these and the control chips are also not fitted. I read an article somewhere (will see if I can find it) where the guy soldered the additional LEDs for the 2 warning lights. He didn’t bother with the light ring. It worked without it.

I did it on my SQ5 which would be very similar. Now that it's done I'm really glad I did it but if I knew when I started what was involved and the cost i probably wouldnt have done it.....I still daredn't add up what it came to lol You need, Radar sensor and bracket Fog light grill Wiring loom (kufatec or diy) Cruise stalk with the adaptive options Extended can (if not already fitted) New clocks. It will run ok on the original clocks but you wont have the indicator ring around the speedo, which is usefull to check what the set speed is in relation to actual. You also dont get the indicator light that tells you its picked up the car in front. Component protection will also need removing from any of the major parts you've changed and then vcds to code up the options. Lastly you need the sensor aligning which can be a costly dealer only job, however I managed to line it up by checking and resetting the measuring block values in vcds over a few days. Works a treat!

I’m quite tempted. Having just done side assist and lane change I’m close to running out of retrofits! I already have a stalk with the ACC distance control switch, keep looking for a radar sensor at a sensible price. But they are going for crazy money.

Did you have to drill the holes for the sensor bracket or are these already in place?

I did read that about the Q5, apparently the holes are already present on the A4. Not looked for them yet. Might pop the fog light grill and take a look.

Where did you come through the bulkhead/firewall with the ACC cable?

audi upgrades

It comes through in the side of the drivers footwell. When you remove the arch liner, there is a main wiring loom going through at that point

How To Use Audi Adaptive Cruise Control

When driving at any speed, something as commonplace as a sneeze might be dangerous. We provide available advanced driver assistance systems as a result. Not out of a lack of skill, but to help fill in the blanks when oddities happen.

Stop-and-go adaptive cruise control makes it easier to accelerate, decelerate, and maintain distance and speed. Radar, camera, laser scanner, and ultrasonic sensors are used by adaptive cruise assist to continuously monitor the environment and support highway driving.

In This Article...

I want to activate adaptive cruise control.

1. Press the cruise control ON/OFF button on the steering wheel to activate the feature. If your car has a Head-Up Display, or a cluster display, you’ll see a white ADAPTIVE CRUISE CONTROL icon when the system is turned on. An arc with a tiny triangle pointing through it or a speedometer with a car on top might be the icon.

2. While moving at the specified speed, press the SET button to select a cruise speed. When the system is in use, the white ADAPTIVE CRUISE CONTROL symbol will turn green.

How can I tell if the cruise control on my Audi is adaptive?

Using the multifunction steering wheel, select Driver assistance view to see the adaptive cruise control display in the instrument cluster. To see the current setting for distance, tap the rocker switch. There are five options for distance. When the ignition is turned off, the most recent distance that was set will be saved.

How is adaptive cruise control used?

While you’re stopped, you can set the Adaptive Cruise Control speed on select vehicles (the system must be on, you must apply the brake pedal and your vehicle must be in FORWARD gear).

  • To activate the feature, press the SET button while pressing the brake.
  • While keeping your foot on the brake, you can adjust the speed by continuously pushing the “+/RESUME or “-/SET button until the system displays the desired speed.
  • After that, let go of the brake, and the car will maintain its place. Pressing the RESUME button after traffic has moved will cause the car to accelerate to the predetermined speed or, if a car is seen ahead, to maintain the following distance.

Can you disable the adaptive cruise control on your Audi?

Pushing the operational lever away from you to position “0 until it engages will turn off adaptive cruise assist. Except for those who choose the premium trim level, there is no simple cruise control.

The value of Audi adaptive cruise control

DeMuro claims that the benefits of having adaptive cruise control in his vehicles have altered his quality of life. A straightforward but sophisticated technology is adaptive cruise control. It does this by using the radars in your car to detect the vehicle in front of you, and depending on what it does, it will either accelerate or decelerate your vehicle up to a maximum speed that you can specify.

Therefore, adaptive cruise control becomes a huge lifesaver in traffic situations when you would otherwise have to repeatedly speed up and then slow down. Adaptive cruise control takes care of all of that for you, saving you from having to laboriously press on the pedal for a brief while before braking once more.

Additionally, because you don’t have to make many turns in these instances of heavy traffic, you won’t need to utilize your steering wheel as much. You can essentially operate a vehicle hands-free in these circumstances by using adaptive cruise control. But don’t misunderstand DeMuro; you still need to pay attention to the road and shouldn’t use adaptive cruise control while doing so.

In times of heavy traffic, though, you essentially don’t have to do much if adaptive cruise control is activated. Additionally, adaptive cruise control ensures that you won’t be exhausted at the conclusion of your drive if you experience heavy traffic as frequently as DeMuro does.

What is wrong with my adaptive cruise control?

Today, it would be challenging to find a car on the road without cruise control. Driving long distances is made easy because to this useful feature, but when it breaks down, it can also be problematic. Knowing the causes of your cruise control’s malfunction will help you have the issue rectified fast for a better ride.

Your car’s acceleration could be affected by this problem, which can potentially affect the cruise control system itself. The moment you become aware of a problem, you should have it examined. Let’s quickly review the causes first.

A blown fuse or a broken brake pedal switch are the two main causes of cruise control malfunctions. Problems with the ABS or the throttle control system may also be to blame. In earlier cruise control systems, a broken vacuum line may be to blame.

Here is a more thorough list of the potential reasons why a cruise control may not be functioning:

Why can’t I book my adaptive cruise right now?

If any of the radars or the camera becomes blocked or misaligned, an “ADAPTIVE CRUISE TEMPORARILY UNAVAILABLE” message may be displayed and the cruise will be disabled.

What models of Audi have adaptive cruise control?

The ACC is connected to the Audi navigation system and is capable of reading traffic signs and providing the driver with that information. For example, when the speed limit changes from 55 to 35, ACC automatically reduces the vehicle’s speed to match the new restriction. When the navigation system detects that you are going to make a turn, ACC automatically reduces the speed to a safe level before resuming it once the turn has been made.

Autoblog’s authors expressed their admiration for this function, noting that many navigation systems alert drivers to approaching turns or exits when it’s almost too late to take a decision. By reducing the vehicle’s speed to a safe level and then resuming the higher speed when the conditions are perfect, ACC makes navigating curves in the road just as simple.

According to Greg Migliore of Autoblog, “Automakers have been insisting for years that the autonomous technology is virtually ready, they just need the infrastructure and laws to catch up.

“Audi’s intelligent system fills in that gap, resulting in a car that can behave properly with minimum driver involvement. The ACC system from Audi, according to Autoblog, gave the driver “a sense of alertness and a better degree of information than other systems on the road.”

The Audi Driver Assist Technology, a collection of functions that provide the driver with an extra set of eyes and ears behind the wheel, includes adaptive cruise control as one of its many features. Audi Pre Sense, Active Lane Assist, and Active Side Assist are additional features. The technology package, which is intended to assist you keep aware of your surroundings, enables you to concentrate on using your Audi, which is the most important aspect of having one.

Description

The adaptive cruise control is a combined speed and distance control system to assist the driver.

Audi A4: Speed and distance control system. Trim grille (front right): Position of radar sensor

Trim grille (front right): Position of radar sensor

Adaptive cruise control allows you to maintain any desired constant speed between 30 and 200 km/h. In addition, the system controls the distance maintained to the vehicle in front (subject to certain limitations as described below).

The system can be used to greatest effect on long motorway journeys or on other main roads with long straight sections.

How is the system operated?

The adaptive cruise control system is operated via a control lever on the steering wheel, “Setting the speed” and, “Setting the distance”.

Driver messages

When the system is being used, important information is displayed in the speedometer and on the instrument cluster display screen, “Driver messages”.

Please note the following points:

The adaptive cruise control has certain limits determined by the system itself. This means that the driver may in some situations have to intervene and control the speed and distance to the vehicle in front himself, “Driver intervention prompt” and, “System limitations”.

Audi A4: Speed and distance control system. Please always direct your full attention to the road, even when you are

Please always direct your full attention to the road, even when you are using adaptive cruise control. It is always the driver who is responsible for determining the speed and for keeping a safe distance to the other vehicles on the road.

  • • For safety reasons, the adaptive cruise control must not be used in city traffic, stop-go traffic, roads with a lot of bends or in difficult driving conditions (such as ice, fog, loose grit or gravel, heavy rain, aquaplaning) - this could cause an accident!
  • • When you take a turn-off, drive along a motorway exit lane or pass through roadwork sections, please temporarily switch off the adaptive cruise control in order to avoid the vehicle accelerating to the selected speed.
  • • The adaptive cruise control can only control the distance to vehicles in front. As a rule, it cannot recognize vehicles travelling in other lanes. For this reason, please temporarily switch off the system if you are travelling in the inside lane and vehicles in the overtaking lane are travelling at a slower speed than you are. Otherwise, you would overtake these vehicles on the inside.
  • • Adaptive cruise control will not react when approaching a stationary obstacle, e.g. the end of a traffic jam or a broken-down vehicle, or if a vehicle should come towards you in the same lane.
  • • Please make sure you do not unintentionally rest your foot on the accelerator - this will override the adaptive cruise control system which, as a result, will not automatically brake the vehicle.

Audi A4: Speed and distance control system.

  • • For safety reasons, the speed setting will be deleted when the ignition is switched off.
  • • Switching on the adaptive cruise control automatically activates the Electronic Stabilisation Program (ESP) and the traction control system (ASR). These two systems cannot be deactivated while the adaptive cruise control is switched on.
  • • Damage caused by impacts (e.g. if the vehicle is damaged when parking) can affect the radar sensor settings. This can cause the system to malfunction or switch off completely.
  • • The radar sensor is heated. However, in winter conditions, you should make sure that the radar sensor is free of ice and snow before you set off. If necessary, carefully clean the cover of the radar sensor and the surrounding area, fig. 136.
  • • To make sure that the radar sensor is fully operative, do not attach any objects (e.g. stickers, add-on parts or other accessories) to the area surrounding the radar sensor. Do not paint the area surrounding the radar sensor.

Vehicles with manual gearbox

The driver of a vehicle with a manual gearbox of course has to change gears as appropriate, even when the adaptive cruise control is activated.

The adaptive cruise control is available from the second to the sixth gear (when driven in normal engine speed range).

When the adaptive cruise control is activated, the driver must press the clutch pedal as normal in order to change gear. When changing gear or pressing the clutch pedal (for up to 20 seconds), the adaptive cruise control will remain activated.

When changing gear, the driver does not have to accelerate after engaging a gear as the engine torque will be coordinated by the adaptive cruise control.

The following situations may lead to an automatic deactivation of the adaptive cruise control:

  • • pressing the clutch pedal too long (longer than approx. 20 seconds)
  • • incorrect changing of gears and/or use of the clutch pedal
  • • The adaptive cruise control cannot be activated while changing gears.

How does the distance control work?

Vehicles in front are detected by a radar sensor.

Audi A4: Speed and distance control system. Area covered by radar sensor

Area covered by radar sensor

The adaptive cruise control uses a radar sensor ⇒ fig. 137 which is integrated in the front of the vehicle and is subject to certain system limitationsgggggg 140. Stationary objects are disregarded. The system requires reflecting surfaces in order to be able to measure the distance. If the ACC is unable to measure the distance it will not respond.

No vehicle in front

When there is no vehicle in front, the adaptive cruise control works like a speed control system. It maintains a constant target speed specified by the driver.

Vehicle in front

Driver intervention prompt

In some situations, it is necessary for the driver to brake the vehicle with the foot brake in order to keep a safe distance to the vehicle in front or to avoid a collision. In this case, a warning message will appear in the display and you will also hear a warning tone.

When overtaking

When you move into the overtaking lane and no vehicle is detected in front, the adaptive cruise control will accelerate up to the target speed and then maintain it.

You can still use the accelerator pedal at any time to increase speed in the normal way. The previously programmed speed will be resumed when the accelerator pedal is released.

  • • Please note that acceleration will vary depending on the preset programme. If you have, for example, selected “Distance 1” and the driving programme “dynamic”, acceleration will be more "sporty". However, if you have set the system to “Distance 4” and driving programme “comfort”, acceleration will be more gradual. For a detailed description please refer to, “Setting the distance”.
  • • No vehicle in front, Vehicle in front and a Driver intervention prompt will be indicated by an indicator lamp, “Indicator lamp and display in the speedometer”.

– Briefly press the sliding switch ⇒ fig. 142 once towards + or -. The display in the instrument cluster will briefly show the current distance setting. – Press the sliding switch again towards + or - to increase or reduce the distance by one level at a time.

Choosing the distance

The actual distance maintained by the adaptive cruise control can be longer or shorter, depending on the traffic situation and the driving style of the driver in front.

This setting is suitable for brisk driving in a line of traffic. The time interval is 1 second. This is equivalent to (for instance):

  • • A distance of 14 metres at a speed of 50 km/h
  • • A distance of 36 metres at a speed of 130 km/h

This setting is suitable for relaxed “moving with the flow” in a line of traffic. The time interval is 1.3 seconds. This is equivalent to (for instance):

  • • A distance of 18 metres at a speed of 50 km/h
  • • A distance of 47 metres at a speed of 130 km/h

This (recommended) setting is suitable for relaxed “moving with the flow” in a line of traffic. The time interval is 1.8 seconds. This is equivalent to (for instance):

  • • A distance of 25 metres at a speed of 50 km/h
  • • A distance of 65 metres at a speed of 130 km/h

This setting is suitable for single-carriageway roads. The time interval is 2.3 seconds. This is equivalent to (for instance):

  • • A distance of 32 metres at a speed of 50 km/h
  • • A distance of 83 metres at a speed of 130 km/h

You can control the acceleration and braking response of your vehicle in adaptive cruise control mode by adjusting the settings on the sound system or MMI*gggggg 139. Depending on the driving program and distance selected, acceleration and braking response will range from dynamic (1) to relaxed (5).

Audi A4: Speed and distance control system. WARNING

When setting the distance, the driver is responsible for adhering to the laws and regulations which apply in the country he is travelling in.

What's New for 2024?

The A4’s standard equipment roster grows for 2024 with the inclusion of adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, parking assist, and a heated steering wheel; all models except for the base A4 40 get remote engine start functionality via the myAudi app. The Navigation package adds traffic sign recognition, which also activates Predictive adaptive cruise control. In the style department, Arkona White replaces Ibis White across the A4 lineup and Progressive Red metallic, available on the A4 45 and S4 models, replaces Tango Red metallic.

Pricing and Which One to Buy

The price of the 2024 Audi A4 starts at $42,995 and goes up to $53,095 depending on the trim and options.

The base Premium trims are up $1100 for the 40 and $1000 for the 45, but pricing for the rest of the 2024 lineup remains unchanged. Offsetting that markup is the new-for-2024 inclusion of adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, parking assist and a heated steering wheel as standard equipment. Still, the mid-range Premium Plus trim makes sense as it bundles together

18-inch wheels, a Bang & Olufsen sound system, a top view camera system, a reconfigurable digital gauge display, a wireless charging pad, memory settings for the driver's seat, blind-spot monitoring, and remote engine start functionality via the myAudi app. We'd suggest the more powerful 45 powertrain—it makes 60 more horsepower than the 40—and it's a relatively inexpensive $1600 upgrade.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

Audi offers the A4 in two strengths: 40 and 45. Both are powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder with a 12-volt hybrid system and all-wheel drive; the 40 makes 201 horsepower, while the 45 ups the output to 261. Although we'd love a six-speed manual, a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic is the only transmission. Precise steering, well-controlled body motions, and strong roadholding combine to make the A4 a sharp, if not class-defining, handler. Equally as impressive is its damping, which instinctively treads the line between comfort and sharp reflexes with balanced results. Steering feel, so important in a sedan with sporting overtones, is subdued at lower speeds and on the highway. However, almost as if by magic, the steering becomes pleasantly communicative when you push the car on twisty roads.

0-60 MPH Times

The A4 45 we drove went from 0-60 mph in a speedy 4.8 seconds, and the automatic shuffled gears quickly and smoothly. We haven't tested a model with the base 201-hp turbocharged four-cylinder, but when we do we will update this story with test results.

The Audi A4 40 is EPA-rated for 26 mpg city and 35 mpg highway. That’s actually a slight improvement of 2 mpg in both measures over the 2023 model. The official A4 45 numbers aren’t in yet, but we expect them to match or fall within 1 mpg of the 40 in each metric. That said, the last A4 45 model we ran on our 75-mph highway fuel-economy route, which is part of our extensive testing regimen, returned a solid 33 mpg. For more information about the A3's fuel economy, visit the EPA's website .

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

Like most of the current Audi lineup, the A4 blends contemporary design cues with sharp technology and quality materials to create a clean, functional upscale cabin environment. Most controls and switches are placed for easy access and operate with a satisfying tactile feel. The A4 does a commendable job of carving out passenger space from its relatively compact footprint. Rear seating is spacious, with 35.7 inches of legroom, and a standard sunroof contributes to the airy feeling. Storage bins and cubbies are on the small side, however, but the trunk offers 12 cubic feet, which is about average for the class. We managed to cram five carry-on suitcases into the trunk, and the A4's back seat folds in a useful 40/20/40 split, making it easy to accommodate longer items such as fishing poles and skis. As with many of the sedans in the entry-luxury class, the A4 is accommodating but not capacious; choose the A4 Allroad wagon if you need more plentiful cargo space.

Infotainment and Connectivity

The A4's infotainment system consists of a 10.1-inch touchscreen with excellent image quality. For 2024, all A4 45 models get remote start functionality via the myAudi app.

All A4 models at the Premium Plus trim level benefit from an available Navigation package (standard on Prestige Trim) that now includes traffic sign recognition which is integrated into the adaptive cruise control. Additional standard features are generous and include Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, two USB ports, and voice command. SiriusXM satellite radio, and in-car Wi-Fi are included in various option packages, as is a more powerful Bang & Olufsen audio system with 19 speakers. A cool digital gauge display that Audi calls Virtual Cockpit is optional, and we highly recommend it.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

Overall safety rating (nhtsa).

Audi has significantly upped the A4’s standard safety content and driver-assistance features for 2024, making adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist and parking assist standard. Previously only available on costly upper trim levels, they add a new layer to the A4’s value. For more information about the A4's crash-test results, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration ( NHTSA ) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety ( IIHS ) websites. Key safety features include:

  • Standard adaptive cruise control
  • Standard automated emergency braking with forward-collision warning
  • Standard lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist

Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

Audi's warranty coverage is strictly average among luxury brands, and it offers no complimentary scheduled maintenance coverage, unlike BMW.

  • Limited warranty covers four years or 50,000 miles
  • Powertrain warranty covers four years or 50,000 miles
  • No complimentary scheduled maintenance

  4. Adaptive Cruise Control Retrofit?

Well, as everyone who bought a B8 A4 in Canada probably knows, we don't have Adaptive Cruise Control as an option at all here on the '09 A4 (why?!). This got me thinking if anyone has been doing a retrofit for ACC in their B8 A4?
