Basics of Universal Orlando Resort

Universal Orlando Resort comprises the following:

Two theme parks— Universal Studios Florida and Universal’s Islands of Adventure

One water park— Universal’s Volcano Bay

Eight official hotels (with two more on the way)

A “downtown” dining / shopping district, CityWalk Orlando

The one other thing everyone knows about Universal is that it is home to The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. The Wizarding World is not its own park, nor is it entirely inside a single theme park.

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter is actually two themed lands —one in each of the two parks . One land (Diagon Alley) is in Universal Studios Florida (Diagon Alley) and the other (Hogsmeade) is in Universal’s Island of Adventure. They are connected by the Hogwarts Express attraction. (If you’re primarily visiting Disney World, we have a separate post on visiting Wizarding World from Disney World .)

universal studios orlando trip vacation planinng guide 02 hogwarts.jpeg

How much should you budget?

We have a separate post going in-depth on how much a trip to Universal Orlando costs . While you can spend more or less (again, read the post), our “baseline” estimates for families of different sizes are:

Family of Three—  $3,850

Family of Four Trip — $4,797

Family of Five — $5,946

Dates and Events

Universal Orlando Resort has a variety of events throughout the year, but the calendar for vacationers is anchored by three major events:

Mardi Gras is celebrated on select dates in February, March, and April

Halloween Horror Nights runs on select nights in September and October

Holidays at Universal Orlando Resort is celebrated from mid-November through the end of the year

Halloween Horror Nights is the event you’re most likely to need to know about, both because it is a unique experience and because it will significantly impact park hours at Universal Studios Florida.

If you’re concerned about crowds, you might look at the Orlando crowd calendar from Undercover Tourist .

Universal’s New “Epic” Park

In August 2019, Universal announced they would be building a third theme park—Universal’s Epic Universe. The park is set to open in 2025. We have a post explaining whether or not you should wait for Epic Universe to open before your next Universal trip .

How Long to Visit Universal Orlando Resort

With two parks and one water park, we think a good length of time to visit Universal Orlando Resort is three full days , one in each park or one full day in each theme park plus a day split between the two theme parks.

If you need to cut this down, you could cut Volcano Bay (the water park) completely or down to half of a day and get down to two days.

Additionally or alternatively, you can purchase Universal Express Pass to “skip the lines” and consolidate the highlights of the two theme parks into a single day (more on this option below).

A single day is also sufficient to experience The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, if that’s all you really want to do.

Getting to Universal Orlando Resort

We’ll break this down into two parts—flying to Orlando, and then getting to the resort itself from either Orlando or Walt Disney World.

Flying to Orlando

There are two main airports that service the Orlando area, Orlando International Airport (MCO) and Orlando Sanford International Airport (SFB).

As with Walt Disney World planning, we recommend flying to Orlando International Airport (MCO). It is closer to Universal and offers a wider variety of transportation options. Also, frankly, if you run into confusion you’ll have much better luck finding information online about traveling through MCO than SFB.

Getting to Universal Orlando from MCO

Universal offers the Universal SuperStar Shuttle between MCO and the resort . Click that link for our review. The roundtrip cost is around $39 per person (last time I checked).

Besides being a shuttle, our post on how to get from Orlando airport to Disney World has several options that also apply to Universal Orlando, and in both cases Uber is our preference.

universal studios orlando trip vacation planinng guide 05 universal superstar shuttle.jpeg

An Uber from MCO to Universal Orlando should run you about $25 to $35. This means that with two or more people, it will probably be most cost efficient to use Uber (don’t forget tip, though). Unfortunately, we’ve had bad luck getting Ubers with car seats recently, so families with small children might want to think twice if you’re going to rely on that option. ( We travel with a Pico car seat. )

You can book other popular shuttle services, like Mears shuttles, or grab a taxi. Finally, for $2 per person, you could take about 2 hours and use public transportation to get to the resort, but we definitely see no reason to recommend that.

Getting to Universal Orlando from SFB

We have no experience with SFB, and really we never intend to gain any. There is a bus service between SFB and Universal Orlando. Beyond that, we can’t really speak to the options. We’d probably recommend an Uber, which should cost between $40 and $60.

Getting to Universal Orlando from Walt Disney World Resort

There are several transportation services that run between Universal Orlando and Walt Disney World. And you can find every sort of “tour” operator under the sun to plan some package for you. Truth be told—you just need to take an Uber or Lyft (or a taxi if you’re not comfortable with those services) to get between these two destinations.

universal studios orlando trip vacation planinng guide 06 uber.png

Are there situations when some other shuttle service might be better? Perhaps. But shuttles can be unreliable and charge per-person. An Uber between these two destinations will run you around $20 to $40 with no hassle.

The only situation when we’d look for something other than Uber is if we needed to make sure we had sufficient number of car seats, in which case we’d either drive ourselves or book some sort of specialty transport in advance.

Where to Stay

There are three main options for staying at Universal—Universal Hotels, non-Universal hotels, and Airbnb.

Universal Hotels

We can’t claim to be experts on any of the Universal on-site hotels. Unlike Walt Disney World, where we’ve stayed at every hotel and visit all of them pretty frequently, we’re only beginning to visit Universal’s hotels.

But while we can’t go in-depth as to our thoughts about them individually, we can provide you an overview of some objective factors to consider.

Universal’s eight hotels are (links are to our reviews):

Premier Hotels (from $328 / night): Loews Portofino Bay Hotel at Universal Orlando, Hard Rock Hotel at Universal Orlando, Loews Royal Pacific Resort at Universal Orlando

Preferred Hotel (from $212 / night): Loews Sapphire Falls Resort at Universal Orlando

Prime Value Hotels (from $145 / night): Universal's Cabana Bay Beach Resort, Universal’s Aventura Hotel

Value Hotels (from $99 / night): Universal's Endless Summer Resort - Surfside Inn and Suites, Universal's Endless Summer Resort - Dockside Inn and Suites

Like at Walt Disney World, guests of Universal’s hotels get access to special perks. Importantly, the perks are different by which “tier” hotel you book!

universal studios orlando trip vacation planinng guide 07 aventura.jpeg

First, all guests of these hotels get access to Early Park Admission . This allows them to visit select attractions for an extra hour before the parks open to other guests.

Universal moves this perk between Islands of Adventure and Universal Studios Florida, but it doesn’t usually alternate daily. More commonly, it will be at one park or the other for a month or more at a time.

Second, guests of Premier Hotels only get complimentary Universal Express Pass Unlimited, allowing them to “skip the line” on select attractions at the parks an unlimited number of times.

We’ll cover Express Pass more below, but it’s important to quickly discuss the economics of this perk. Universal advertises it as being worth up to $170+tax per person per day. That’s technically true—and we do think it’s often good value—but the true value depends on the day.

universal studios orlando trip vacation planinng guide 08 express.jpeg

You definitely do not need Express Pass every day of a multi-day visit. And you don’t even necessarily need Express Pass Unlimited at all.

To be clear, we think this perk definitely justifies a night or two at a Premier Hotel (if the right prices are available), we just don’t think you should look at Express Pass and think “well three days of Express Pass for four people would be over $2000, so duh I have to upgrade my hotel! ”

Dining Plans

Guests purchasing packages with stays at Universal hotels have the option of purchasing a dining plan. We have no experience with these, but in general these sorts of prepaid plans are usually going to be more of a hassle to precisely manage than they’re worth. If you’re interested in it, plan carefully.

Non-Universal Hotels

We don’t have too much to say about non-Universal hotels, but there are a lot in the area that are as close or even closer than some of Universal’s hotels. Look at a map of the area and zoom in pretty much anywhere, and you’ll see hotels.

Besides looking at the hotel websites to see what walking times they project and what shuttle options they advertise, we highly recommend visiting Trip Advisor pages for the hotels and then searching for “walk” and “shuttle” in the reviews. This will give you visitor reports on shuttle and walking experiences.

Keep in mind that by staying at a non-Universal hotel, you won’t have Early Park Admission included in your stay.

Finally, we remain big fans of Airbnb, though we’re less inclined to go out of our way for a deal at Universal than over by Walt Disney World because hotel prices near Universal are so competitive. Airbnb is a good option for people with cars (or willing to pay for Uber) and who would like access to a full kitchen.

We have a post covering staying at an Airbnb for Walt Disney World visits , and obviously much of the same advice in there applies to Universal visits as well.

Choosing Your Universal Orlando Ticket

Universal Orlando’s ticket options are needlessly confusing, but we’re happy to cut through some of the nonsense. Essentially, Universal requires you to make three decisions:

How many days?

How many parks? (one, two, or three)

Do you want park-to-park (aka park hopper)?

We’ll break down the tickets by these three questions. All prices in this section are pre-tax, from the Universal website (as of publication date), and for a single adult. Prices vary by season, so prices for your date may be different.

Just for a quick reference:

Tickets range from $109 for a 1-Day, 1-Park ticket to $400+ for a 3-Day, 3-Park, Park-To-Park ticket

Additional days after day 2 tend to cost $10 to $20 per day

Adding Volcano Bay to your ticket costs about $55 to $75

Park-To-Park privileges cost about $60 to $70 for the total length of your ticket

How Many Days?

We covered how many days you need much earlier in this post. The biggest price gap is between 1-Day and 2-Day tickets. That second day costs about $110. After that, adding days typically costs $10 to $20 per day.

How Many Parks?

For the most part , Universal treats the resort as having three parks—the two theme parks and Volcano Bay, the water park. However, the don’t always treat Volcano Bay as an equal, so it’s important to pay attention to whether your purchase—particularly tickets and Express Pass—includes Volcano Bay or now.

Universal divides its tickets into three categories—1-Park, 2-Park, and 3-Park. 1-Park tickets allow admission into exactly one park. These are only sold for one-day visits and cost $115 for a theme park or $80 for Volcano Bay.

universal studios orlando trip vacation planinng guide 10 diagon alley.jpeg

There really isn’t a reason you’d be reading this post and get a 1-park ticket. Remember, the flagship area of the resort is The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, which is split across the two theme parks. If you only have a single day, you’ll definitely want to spring for the 2-Park 1-Day Park-To-Park ticket for $170 (exact price varies by season).

To decide between 2-Park and 3-Park tickets, you need to decide whether or not you’ll be going to the water park, Volcano Bay. 3-Park tickets (with Volcano Bay) typically cost between $55 and $75 more than tickets without Volcano Bay.

2-Park tickets allow admission into Universal Studios Florida and Universal’s Islands of Adventure, not necessarily on the same day (that’s covered next, in “Park to Park”). You can buy these tickets for visits of any length.

3-Park tickets allow admission into Universal Studios Florida, Universal’s Islands of Adventure, and Universal’s Volcano Bay water park. You can buy these for visits of two days or longer.

universal studios orlando trip vacation planinng guide 11 park.jpeg

Park-to-Park (Yes, You Need It)

Park-to-Park tickets allow you to visit multiple parks on a single day. Park-To-Park privileges apply to the entire length of the ticket. Obviously you can only buy a 2-Park 1-Day or 3-Park 2-Day ticket if you get park-to-park. Park-To-Park tickets cost between $60 and $70 (total) more than tickets without Park-To-Park.

Without Park-To-Park, a 2-Park, 4-Day ticket (for example) would allow you to enter just one park each day. Whether you do the same park all four days, or alternate, or some other combination is up to you.

While we’re always a fan of ticket options that allow you the flexibility of moving between parks, Universal Orlando has a particular feature that basically forces the average guest into getting Park-to-Park. You cannot ride the Hogwarts Express without a Park-to-Park ticket.

The Hogwarts Express attraction connects to two halves of The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, which you’ll recall are in two different parks. Riding it thus requires you to be allowed in both parks on a single day.

universal studios orlando trip vacation planinng guide 12 hogwarts express.jpeg

Annual Passes

Looking at Universal Orlando’s annual pass options got me a bit dizzy. At some point, we might unpack all the options, but we just want to hit the highlights here.

First, you should definitely look into a Seasonal Pass. That pass costs $425+tax for a 2-Park pass, which is the a little more than a 2-Park 3-Day ticket. Of course, substantial blockout dates apply, but if your visit fits the dates, it can definitely make sense to get a pass—particularly because annual passes can get you access to hotel discounts.

A few years ago, I personally saved $255 on a Universal hotel stay by getting a seasonal pass ($350 pre-tax back then) instead of a 2-Park 4-Day ticket with park to park ($320 pre-tax).

universal studios orlando visit

Second, you can upgrade fully paid annual passes. Universal allows certain passes to be paid for on installments. If you pay fully upfront for your pass, you can pay to upgrade it at a later time, if you decide. This means that if you’re unsure the perks will make sense ahead of a trip, you can start with a seasonal pass and then upgrade later, if need be.

Finally, the highest level perks clearly target locals. As a frequent Walt Disney World guest who will sometimes pop over to Universal, the perks of the Premier Annual Pass offer me little. Express Pass after 4PM makes most sense for guests who will visit on the evenings, after work. Early Admission makes sense if you’re never staying at a Universal hotel.

Really, for vacationers its the reduced blockout dates that will be the biggest factor in upgrading your pass. If you can plan around the blockout dates, though, there’s probably minimal reason you’ll need to upgrade to a higher level pass.

Buying Your Universal Orlando Tickets

You can purchase your Universal Orlando tickets directly from Universal online, if you’d like. In the past, we purchased discount tickets from Undercover Tourist with no issue. We recommend you check out our guide to buying discount Walt Disney World tickets , as those brokers tend to sell Universal tickets, as well.

Planning Your Time at Resort

You’ve booked your flight, picked your hotel, and navigated the maze of ticket options. Now it’s time for the fun part—actually visiting Universal Orlando!

Getting Around

Universal CityWalk (discussed more below) is the hub of Universal Orlando resort. The only way to enter the two theme parks is by first passing through Universal CityWalk.

Shuttle buses connect Universal CityWalk (and by extension, the two parks) to the hotels. There are also walking paths connecting six of the hotels.

Guests at the Endless Summer hotels have a walking option , but it is unappealing, long, and mostly alongside a highway. Water taxis also connect some of the hotels to CityWalk. More on CityWalk below.

Park Itineraries and Guides

All guests need to have a plan for visiting or working around Early Park Admission . If you’re not at a Universal hotel (or don’t otherwise have Early Park Admission access), you’ll be at a disadvantage visiting a park with Early Park Admission. If you do have access, you want to be sure to get everything you can out of it.

We have a guide to the rides of Universal Studios Florida . We also have a one-day Universal Studios Florida sample itinerary .

Changing parks, we also have an Islands of Adventure rides guide, including a list of the best rides . Our one day Islands of Adventure itinerary also provides a touring plan for spending a full day at that park. For tips on your morning—including whether or not you should start with Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure—we have a guide to morning rope drop at Islands of Adventure .

We’re not huge water park fans, so we honestly haven’t made time to put serious thought into Volcano Bay. Undercover Tourist has a good guide to Volcano Bay .

universal studios orlando trip vacation planinng guide 16 gate.jpeg

Universal Express Pass & Express Unlimited

We have a separate post that covers the ins and outs of Universal Express Pass and Express Unlimited . We’ll give a very brief rundown of it here, though.

Express Pass is a paid add-on that allows you access to an express line with a shorter wait time on most Universal attractions. You have to purchase it for specific days, but guests of Premier Hotels get the unlimited version for every day of their stay.

Because it can be so expensive (over $150 per person some days), we think you should be very careful about purchasing it, and very deliberate with how you use it.

It’s a total waste of money—in our opinion—to just blindly decide you have to have Express Pass every day of your visit. That’s why we dedicate a full post to it.

universal studios orlando trip vacation planinng guide 17 city walk.jpeg

Single Rider Lines

Anytime we mention Express Pass, it’s good to briefly mention single rider lines. These are lines where individual riders queue to be placed with a group that doesn’t quite fill a ride vehicle. Groups in the single rider line will be split, and you will have to ride with strangers.

Single rider lines aren’t always available, but these rides often have them:

Fast & Furious Supercharged

Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure

Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey

Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit

MEN IN BLACK Alien Attack

Revenge of the Mummy

The Incredible Hulk Coaster

Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts

Skull Island Reign of Kong

The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man

Transformers The Ride 3D

VelociCoaster

I’ve also seen Despicable Me Minion Mayhem use an single rider on occasion.

CityWalk isn’t a theme park, it’s a shopping, dining, and entertainment district similar to Downtown Disney or Disney Springs. Unlike Downtown Disney or Disney Springs, it’s virtually impossible to miss CityWalk (not that you want to miss any of the three) because all entrances to the theme parks go through CityWalk first.

Guests taking the Garden Walk pathway will just touch the edge of CityWalk en route to Islands of Adventure, but will walk through more of it en route to Universal Studios Florida. All other guests will pass through almost all of CityWalk on their way to the parks because parking and guest drop-off are on one end and the parks are on the other.

CityWalk has a variety of restaurants, and we highly recommend making a reservation if you’re planning to dine at them. Keep in mind that at the end of the day as guests exit the parks, CityWalk becomes very crowded and the restaurants fill up.

21 Top Tips for Visiting Universal Studios Orlando [2024]

Sharing is caring!

After a week in Orlando, Florida and three days spent at Universal Studios Orlando I am already planning a return trip. This was an absolutely magical place and perfect for all ages.

Universal seems to be a mixture of Walt Disney World which is perfect for children and Busch Gardens which is great for thrill-seekers. It’s for sure one of the best theme parks in the US !

I didn’t do quite enough research before my trip so I feel like my time wasn’t used as efficiently as it could have been. And I don’t want that happening to you!

So here are my top Universal Studios tips for 2023.

13. Buy Tickets in Advance

21. how much money do you need in universal studios.

What to Know Before Going to Universal Orlando in 2023

There’s no way you’ll have it all figured out before your trip, but it’s great to have a head start! These Universal Orlando tips and tricks will hopefully help you create a plan and know what to expect on your trip.

Globe with Universal written across the front over a fountain

1. Get to the Parking Garage by 8:30

We got there at multiple times during our stay and by far the easiest time to get in the park was at 8:30.

Since the park opens at 9 it seems like everyone wants to get there right then and there is a bottleneck effect.

When we arrived just after 9, it took us 40 minutes from the time we drove into the park to when we scanned our ticket since the morning rush hadn’t cleared out.

When we got there at 8:30 we were scanning our tickets into the park at 8:50. We were some of the first people in the park and first in line at the rides.

2. Make a Game Plan

Look at the park maps before you get there and figure out which rides you want to get on. Once you figure out your top rides, figure out which ones are close together.

You can group the rides together that you’d like to visit and then make a plan of which you’ll visit first.

You can also make a plan based on the region of the park you want to visit. Maybe you want to visit Harry Potter World first (like we did). I highly recommend this if you’re a big Harry Potter fan.

If you are spending one day in each park then this won’t be as big of an issue. A day gives you plenty of time to see everything in one park depending on how long the lines are and what all you want to ride.

3. Buy the Express Pass

Universal Orlando Resort express pass in front of a girl's face. Buying the express pass is one of my top tips for visiting Universal Studios.

Okay the Universal Express Passes are EXPENSIVE. In the app it kept saying starting at $99 for the Express Unlimited Pass well that’s on a weekday in the off-season.

On Friday April 23, 2021 they were $262 including tax. (That’s for only one.)

Was it worth it? Absolutely.

Well, the Express Pass was, but maybe not the Unlimited. They have one pass that lets you skip the line at each ride only once and if I had it to do over again I would get that one instead of the Unlimited.

We didn’t have time to ride many things more than once. Try buying your pass ahead of time to see if you can get a cheaper price instead of buying it on the day of.

This may seem counter-intuitive, but if I had it to do over again I think I would buy the Express Pass on a Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday. Those were the cheaper days. There will still be crowds so it’s worth it but it’s cheaper.

We did not have the Express Pass on Thursday and only rode four rides… Yes, four rides because we were standing in line so long. On Friday we got the Express Pass and rode eleven different rides and two of those twice.

So compare getting to ride four things to riding thirteen and you’ll see why it’s worth it to me.

I absolutely hate waiting in line – I’m really not patient at all – and yes, I know that’s a terrible trait. So the Express Pass made my day infinitely better and purchasing it is one of my biggest Universal Studios tips for 2023.

Only you can decide if the price is worth it to you though.

You can buy the Express Pass cheaper on Undercover Tourist sometimes so be sure to check them out!

Just a note – I don’t always recommend buying the Express Pass for theme parks. Especially when you visit places like Dollywood or Busch Gardens .

4. Bring a Fanny Pack (Small Backpacks Work)

You may be thinking “Anna there is no way in heck I am wearing a fanny pack, you are insane.” Well when you see how functional they are at Universal you might just change your tune.

Fanny packs are allowed on almost all the rides at Universal which means you don’t have to waste time with the lockers before the ride and you can keep your phone or anything else with you.

The lockers can get very congested and it takes up valuable time trying to stuff your backpacks or anything else in them. More on lockers in a minute.

If you don’t have a fanny pack and are absolutely boycotting them then a small backpack (like this Kavu bag ) is the next best thing. Just note that these will have to be stored in the lockers.

5. There are Lockers for Most Roller Coasters

Circular barge on a water ride with bridge over the top

The locker situation is awesome for groups that don’t have a person who isn’t riding the coasters. There are standard-sized lockers available for free at many of the roller coasters that measure 5.5” tall, 14” wide, and 16.9” deep. This fits a small backpack or miscellaneous items.

They have larger lockers available for $2 if your things don’t fit in a standard size. These would be regular size backpacks or large souvenirs. These single-time use lockers are only good for a certain time frame – maybe an hour but don’t hold me to that.

If you are bringing items in that you won’t need all day then Universal also offers all-day locker rentals. There are lockers for $10 at Islands of Adventure and $15 at Universal Studios Florida. You’ll have unlimited access to these lockers during the day.

At the Popeye water ride you must pay for the lockers because they offer a covered place on the “barge” for you to place your things. However, they will definitely still get wet so if you have anything that can’t get wet definitely buy the $2 locker.

On Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit and the Hulk Coaster you have to pass through a metal detector before you can go on the ride so you are required to put everything you have in a locker or with someone not riding.

6. Download the Universal Studios App

You can do so much with the Universal Studios App. You can get in the virtual lines for any attraction with that capability. You can order food and drinks on the app. The app holds your tickets, maps, show times, wait times for attractions, and general park info.

At many of the sit-down restaurants, you can mobile order – at least the ones in Harry Potter World. Then at restaurants with walk-up windows you can mobile-order and pick it up at a specific mobile-order pickup spot. It’s actually super efficient and you don’t have to wait in the long line.

Some rides go to virtual line only when the parks are at capacity. The Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure had a virtual line the first two days we were there and the third it was virtual until the afternoon.

On our third day there the Revenge of the Mummy was virtual and Race Through New York Starring Jimmy Fallon was virtual all three days.

Honestly, this is one of the top tips for visiting Universal Studios. The app is so helpful.

7. Virtual Lines Open Before the Park

You can get a spot in virtual lines through the Universal App. It gives you the option to get a spot in line within a certain timeframe so all you have to do is show up at the ride and show the attendant your phone.

The Race Through New York ride opened by 8:30 everyday so you could get a spot. On the day we finally got there early enough to get a spot on Hagrid’s ride the virtual line for it opened at 8:45.

Hagrid’s ride always ran out of virtual spots so we were so excited to get in. By 9 all the spots were always gone and we never could find an opening throughout the day. Until the third day when they opened the line so you could physically wait in it instead of having to use the app.

Moral of the story is that if you want to ride something really bad, make sure to get there early and check the virtual line.

8. The Crosswalk Isn’t Always Open

There are three ways to get between the two parks – Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure. This is only if you have a Park-to-Park ticket for the day.

First – You can walk out the exit of either park and through CityWalk by the Toothsome Chocolate Emporium and Hard Rock Cafe and into the other park. The walk is about 15 – 20 minutes depending on where you’re at in the park.

Second – There is a crosswalk between the two parks, but it is not always open so not an option all the time. It wasn’t open during any of the three days that we were there.

Third and my personal favorite – Take the Hogwarts Express! This is definitely the most fun way to get between the parks. However, the line gets incredibly long as the day goes on. If you’ve already been on this ride then I wouldn’t recommend waiting over 30 minutes on the train.

9. Many Restaurants on Universal CityWalk Require Reservations

Two restaurants across the river on CityWalk. Making reservations is one of the top tips for visiting Universal Studios.

We made the mistake of not making a dinner reservation on a Friday night and were out of luck when it came to eating on CityWalk.

Every restaurant either had an hour and a half wait or was reservation only. I’ve already told you how impatient I am so you know I’m not waiting that long to eat.

For those of you who exercise your patience daily, you can grab drinks and appetizers at little kiosks around the CityWalk while you wait.

10. Express Passes Get You In Regardless of Virtual Lines

If you couldn’t get in the Virtual Line, but still want to ride something you can use your Express Pass if the attraction has an Express Line.

Not everything has an Express Line, but most do. One very popular ride that doesn’t is Hagrid’s.

11. Wear the Right Clothing and Shoes

One of the most important Universal Studios tips for 2023 by far. I wore a dri-fit t-shirt and shorts that dried quickly because I knew that we would be getting on the water rides.

I also wore my Chacos ZX3 sandals . They’re comfortable and do so well with water.

Comfortable shoes are a must. If you don’t plan on riding the water rides then I would go with sneakers. I’ve actually put together a whole list of the best shoes for theme parks if you need some new ones!

My Chacos are super comfy and did well when we walked 6 miles. Our last day we walked 12 miles though and my feet were hurting pretty good at the end of the day.

12. You Can Bring in Some Food

shrimp, corn, potatoes, and sausage in a paper tray

Here is one of the ultimate budget tips for visiting Universal Studios. You can bring in snacks and food that you don’t have to heat. What you cannot do is bring in a picnic lunch with a main course and sides.

I would highly recommend bringing some snacks and if you really want to watch your budget then take sandwiches for lunch. A good ol PB&J will always do the trick.

You are also allowed to bring up to two liters of water into the park. We brought in two water bottles each and that was plenty for us.

If you buy tickets in advance you’ll save a bit from what you would pay at the gate. It won’t be huge savings but everything adds up. Again, check with Undercover Tourist to buy your Universal Studios park tickets .

You can also see if Express Passes are discounted if you buy them when you purchase admission tickets.

I loved having my tickets on my phone in the Universal App. It was super convenient and I didn’t have to keep up with any extra pieces of paper.

More Universal Orlando Tips and Tricks 2023

14. you must have the 2-park ticket to ride the hogwarts express.

If you want to ride this then be sure you purchase the 2-park ticket! Honestly, if you want to save money you can purchase the 2-park ticket for one day only and do individual parks for the rest of your stay.

The Hogwarts Express is a must for any Harry Potter fan. Be sure to take the train both ways as the video is different depending on which station you come from.

15. Choose the Right Accommodations

Staying on the resort property would be nice, but it’s very expensive. Sometimes the included perks are worth it though. Undercover Tourist also sells hotel packages where you can sometimes find a deal!

For example, I’ve heard that one of the hotels within Universal Orlando Resort will include Express Passes for your whole family if you stay on their property. Depending on the size of your family this might be worth it.

We stayed at Club Wyndham Bonnet Creek Resort which is on the Walt Disney World Campus. It isn’t part of the Disney Resorts though so the weekly price is much cheaper.

I’ve also written a complete Club Wyndham Bonnet Creek Review if you want to know what to expect. This is sometimes an overlooked Universal Orlando tip!

16. Universal has Free WiFi

This will save your data plan if you connect to the free WiFi. It doesn’t require a password but if you don’t have an Xfinity account you’ll have to enter your email and zip code.

There is good coverage throughout both parks and most of CityWalk.

17. Buy Souvenirs Before You Arrive

Hogwarts Castle in Harry Potter World.

This is mainly for Harry Potter World but can apply to other sections of Universal.

Many people love wearing Harry Potter shirts and cloaks. You can buy these on Amazon before your trip for much cheaper.

There are also necklaces, scarves, and so much more sold in the park. The prices really are outrageous so if you can buy them ahead of time I would do that.

The one thing I would buy in the park is the interactive wand if you want that. It is really cool to do the magic in the park.

My sister got Snape’s wand for $58 but I didn’t want to pay that much.

18. You Don’t Have to Buy Your Wand at Ollivanders

Everyone wants to visit Ollivanders to buy their wand which can make the line incredibly long. There are so many other places to buy a wand though.

In Diagon Alley you can visit Wands by Gregorovitch when they are open. You can also go to Knockturn Alley into Borgin & Burke’s if you want a dark wizard’s wand.

In Hogsmeade you’ll find a cart between Hogwarts and the shops where you can buy wands. You’ll also find wands at Dervish and Banges.

19. How Many Days Should You Spend at Universal Studios Florida?

People walking under a bridge with the message "The Adventure Lives On."

I would say three at the very least. It takes a day or two just to get your bearings – especially if you haven’t made a plan. We didn’t make a good plan and we spent most of the first two days walking around figuring stuff out.

If you can make it on Tuesdays or Wednesdays those are the best days to visit too. Weekends are absolutely horrendous for crowds. I would hate to see the place when they weren’t limiting access.

Hopefully these Universal Orlando tips and tricks will help you take advantage of all your time there!

20. Visit During Shoulder Season

Unless you have to visit during the school breaks, I would make it a point to avoid those. You’ll spend your whole vacation waiting in line.

According to the Undercover Tourist, the best times to visit Universal over the next couple years will be weekdays during September through December with September being the best.

Our visit was in April and I’m sure the crowds weren’t bad compared to the summer months when school is out.

This is totally dependent on your preference. Do you plan on bringing a picnic and re-entering the park? Do you plan on buying souvenirs? Playing arcade games? Alcohol?

Another thing to think about is the CityWalk. Will you eat or shop here? The main extra expenses that you’ll have inside the park are food and souvenirs.

I would budget $60 per person per day especially if you’re doing two meals in the park. That will likely get you a snack too.

For souvenirs, I recommend setting a budget before you go. For example, I knew the only thing that I wanted was a refrigerator magnet and possibly a Christmas Tree ornament so my budget was around $25 for souvenirs.

Best Things to Do at Universal Studios Orlando for 2023

Okay here are some new things to do at Universal Studios plus some oldie but goodie memorable experiences that we had.

Number one – the Jurrasic World Velocicoaster is open! This looked like an absolutely epic ride so if you are a big coaster fan then check it out.

Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure TM , Escape from Gringotts TM , Revenge of the Mummy, Rip Ride Rockit TM , and the Hulk Coaster were our favorite rides. Again, these are for the big roller coaster fans!

Check out at least one of the shows while you’re here – they do a great job! Universal keeps a list of all the current shows.

Make sure to allow some time to explore city walk. It really is an attraction to itself. Grab some doughnuts at Voodoo Doughnuts where you can skip the line if you order on the Universal Studios app.

Do you love seasonal events? Then plan a trip to Universal around Halloween, the Holidays, or Mardi Gras! Check out their event list for other things throughout the year.

For Harry Potter fans, make sure you visit Hogsmeade at night if they are doing the light show at Hogwarts TM . They don’t do this every night though so ask an employee when you visit.

Oh and make sure you check out the Knight Bus TM right outside of Diagon Alley. Across from the bus, you’ll see 12 Grimmauld Place and if you hang out a bit you can catch Kreacher peeking out the window.

Make sure you eat all the Butterbeer in as many different ways as you can. Check out the Three Broomsticks for the atmosphere and Mythos is an award-winning restaurant in the park.

How to Get to Universal Studios Orlando

If you live in the southeast then you may consider a road trip to Orlando so you can drive to the park. Depending on where you live, Orlando is also a cheap place to fly into.

You can either fly into Orlando and rent a car or contact your hotel to see if they have a shuttle service from the airport. This will save you money, especially if you are staying at a Universal hotel.

Ubers are plentiful around Orlando in case you need to go somewhere other than the park. If you aren’t staying on property, many local hotels have a shuttle service that will take you to the park.

This just means you are at the mercy of the shuttle schedule or you’ll have to take an Uber depending on when you want to arrive and leave the park.

Universal Studios Florida Tips You Need to Know for Your Next Visit

We have planned many trips to Universal Studios Florida and have learned a few tips and tricks along the way. Today we are sharing our Universal Studios Orlando insider tips on how to make the most of your Universal Orlando vacation.

Universal Studios Orlando is one of two Universal theme parks at the Universal Orlando Resort. There is also Universal’s Islands of Adventure . Universal’s third park Epic Universe is set to open in 2025.

This is not to be confused with Walt Disney World’s Hollywood Studios . Universal Parks are not related to Disney Parks.

At Universal Studios you step into the movies with thrilling attractions, family fun characters, and awesome lands to keep your family entertained all day.

My Best Tips for Universal Studios Florida

  • Arrive 30 minutes before official park opening time.
  • Visit the Most Popular Attractions First.
  • Take time to explore Diagon Alley at The Wizarding World of Harry Potter.

Want more tips for visiting Universal Studios Florida? Read on for what I have learned to plan a great day at the Universal theme park.

We have been annual pass holders almost continuously from since 2017 and we’ve had enough visits to share how to plan an awesome Universal Orlando vacation .

Universal Studios has a Harry Potter area called The Wizarding World of Harry Potter: Diagon Alley , Springfield U.S.A, a Minion area, as well as the E.T. Adventure attraction.

If you are planning on visiting other Universal parks check out these helpful articles:  First Timers Guide to Universal Orlando ,  Islands of Adventure Tips  and  Volcano Bay Tips .

Best Universal Studios Orlando Tips

Arrive early.

Arrive at least 30-40 minutes before park opening to get on the most popular attractions with a short wait times. If you have early entry because you are staying at an on-site resort or you have an annual pass, plan on arriving 30-40 minutes before early entry time.

Purchase your tickets ahead of time to get through the turnstiles quickly. This will allow you to ride attraction before long lines start.

Universal Orlando is a large resort and you will do a lot of walking. Everyone that visits the Universal Resort parks in one parking lot.

universal studios orlando review entrances

You then walk through Universal CityWalk (the dining district) and go towards the Universal Studios entrance or the Island of Adventures entrance. Be prepared to walk a lot.

Once inside Universal Studios, the park is not very large but walking from the parking garage to the park entrance can take some time. Plan extra walking time to arrive at gate early.

Pack a Few Essentials

When packing for Universal Studios we always pack a small backpack and include: water bottles , ponchos , and any medication essentials we may need for the day.

Consider the weather when packing sunscreen, hats, and rain gear.

Take Advantage to On-Site Perks

Early park admission is available to guests staying at one of the Universal Orlando resort hotels. They change seasonally and are often available for the Harry Potter areas at the parks. We have used this and it has saved us a lot of time!

We stayed at Universal’s Cabana Bay and Universal’s Endless Summer Surfside Inn on previous visits and really enjoyed the perks of staying on-site. All of the on-site hotels at Universal offer early park admission.

Guests staying at a premier hotel like Hard Rock Hotel , Loews Royal Pacific Resort, or Loews Portofino Bay Hotel receive express passes included in their stay.

Express passes are a skip the line add-on that can be purchased in addition to your admission ticket. They are not cheap but if you can have them included with your stay you may be able to benefit from them.

I always compare the price of staying at a premier hotel to see if it is worth it for the express passes. Learn more: Is Universal Express Pass Worth It?

Visit During a Special Event

The special events at Universal are a great time and usually included with your theme park ticket, with a few exceptions. My favorite special events are the Holidays at Universal and Mardi Gras at Universal.

Both of these events are included and have festive food and parades during your visit.

Use the Single Rider Lines if You Can

The single rider line is a great option to skip the long lines. Adults can use this if you are traveling with small children that do not want to ride.

Rides at Universal Studios Florida that have a single rider line are: Men in Black: Alien Attack, Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit, The Revenge of the Mummy, Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts, Fast & Furious-Supercharged, and Transformers: The Ride 3D.

As a family we have recently started using this to avoid the long wait times. Your party will be split up so this doesn’t always work but it is a great way to shorten your wait times when visiting on busy days.

If you have questions about being split up you can always ask team members at the ride entrance but don’t expect to be seated together.

Understand What Type of Ticket You Purchased

When you visit amusement parks you assume you can ride all the attractions, but at Universal there is one attraction that you need a park-to-park ticket to ride.

Hogwarts Express is the train ride that takes you from Universal Studios to Islands of Adventure. It is part of the Harry Potter themed areas and you can only ride if you have a park-to-park ticket.

It transfers guests between Diagon Alley and Hogsmeade and you must get off at the station and line back up to ride again.

Guests park tickets will be scanned as they enter the attraction and you will be turned away if you do not have a ticket for both parks.

Plan On Using Lockers for Some Attractions

A few attractions require the use of lockers. They are Escape from Gringotts, Men In Black, Hollywood Rip Ride Rocket, and The Mummy. All items must be put in lockers.

This includes bags, purses, sunglasses, phones, etc. I have seen people turned away from riding for having a wand in their pocket on Gringotts-after waiting in line. I always play it safe and put everything in the locker.

The lockers are free for the attraction wait time. Each attraction has a locker area and the “free time” is based on the ride wait time. The free lockers are small but we were able to fit a small backpack into it.

If you need a larger backpack you will have to pay for a large locker. I honestly thought the lockers would be a much bigger deal but it ended up being easy.

Be prepared to use lockers for most roller coasters at the Universal Orlando parks.

Make Time to Explore Diagon Alley

One of my favorite areas at Universal Studios is The Wizarding World of Harry Potter: Diagon Alley. It is hidden behind the brick walls of London but once you stepped inside you are transported to another world.

We always visit Diagon Alley first because I like to explore the area before the crowds get big. It is really an amazing area and has one of my favorite attractions in any Universal park: Escape from Gringotts.

We usually ride Gringotts and then spend our first hour in the park exploring the are and using our interactive wands to cast spells. The Wizarding World of Harry Potter is a can’t miss attraction at Universal Studios.

Visit the Best Rides First

A great tip for visiting Universal Studios is to ride the best attractions first. As I mentioned earlier we start with Escape from Gringotts and then usually ride The Mummy, Transformers, Race Through NY with Jimmy Fallon, Hollywood Rip Ride Rocket, Men in Black, Simpsons Ride, and E.T.

These rides tend to have the busiest lines. Despicable Me also tends to have long lines although I do not think the wait is worth it. It is a cute ride but I wouldn’t wait longer than 20 minutes.

Universal Studios has different streets and areas in the park and it doesn’t really have an obvious flow of crowds. This makes it easy to back track and easily go between rides and attractions.

Break Up Your Day

Universal Studios size makes it easy to arrive early at the park, ride all the attractions, have lunch, and take a break around mid-afternoon. We like to go back to our resort, recharge, and return to the parks in the evening.

If you plan on leaving the parks early, check the park hours. There are times of the year when Universal Studios closes at 7:00pm and going back may not work for you.

Decide What Attractions are Must Do’s for Your Family

When planning a theme park vacation I always ask what specifically your family likes to do. Every family is different and there is no point going on the “best rides” if you don’t like it.

The great thing about theme parks is there is something for everyone. There are rides at Universal Studios that teens will like and attractions that are better for younger kids.

Take a look at the Universal Studios website and talk to everyone going on vacation about what they would like to do at the parks. This saves so much time and stress at the parks.

With that being said I am going to share what we always ride when we visit. Our family favorite rides at Universal Studios are:

  • Escape from Gringotts (42 inches)
  • Men in Black (42 inches)
  • Race Through New York with Jimmy Fallon (40 inches)
  • E.T. Adventure (34 inches)
  • Diagon Alley has is an attraction in itself because there is so much to discover and visitors often spend hours taking it all in.
  • Diagon Alley is the Harry Potter themed area inside Universal Studios. It is immersive and you could spend hours there. People visit and spend their entire day in this area. There are shops, restaurants, shows, characters, attractions, and places to explore and it is one of the best themed areas I have ever visited.
  • At Diagon Alley you can purchase a wand, or watch the wand show and have the wand choose you, then explore Diagon Alley practicing spells. If you are a Harry Potter fan plan to spend a lot of time in Diagon Alley.
  • Illumination’s Villain-Con Minion Blast is a favorite too!
  • DreamWorks Land is opening in summer of 2024 and will be a great area for kids.

Best Age to Visit Universal Studios

Again this is a personal decision but we think age and height play a big factor in deciding the best age to visit Universal Studios.

My youngest was 4 and 42 inches for our first visit and that allowed him to ride most of the attractions.

That didn’t mean he wanted to ride everything though. There were some attractions that were too scary and he was not ready for. We skipped those for our next visit.

There are splash areas, shows, and rides that young kids will enjoy like DreamWorks Land (opening summer 2024) and Minion Land.

Are there scary rides at Universal Studios?

Some rides may be scary for young kids but most at Universal Studios should be okay. The Mummy is an indoor roller coaster that is themed to The Mummy movie and can be scary for some kids.

Escape from Gringotts can also be scary and has elements from the movie that may frighten children unfamiliar with the characters. Read this article for all the ride height requirements and scare factors at Universal Studios .

Will Universal Studios rides cause motion sickness?

Motion sickness can be an issue at any theme park but Universal Studios can be difficult for some. A lot of the attractions at the park use screens and simulators. If you are prone to motion sickness plan accordingly.

Stay Updated with What Is Happening at the Parks

I always suggest checking Universal’s website before you arrive. Check what rides and attractions may be closed during your visit.

Meet Characters at Universal Studios

Almost every section of Universal Studios has characters to meet. Some have designated areas and others are randomly walking around the park. Read the 65 Characters You Can Meet & Greet at Universal for more information and in-depth details about the characters.

Dining at Universal Studios

You have many dining options when visiting Universal Studios that range from sit down to quick service. We have experienced both and I prefer the quick service because the food is great and it takes less time.

  • Universal Studios’ Classic Monsters Cafe (Quick Service)
  • Leaky Cauldron (Quick Service) *One of our favorites!
  • Minion’s Cafe (Quick Service) *Love It!
  • Finnegan’s Bar & Grill (Sit Down)
  • BumbleBee Man’s Taco Truck (Food Truck-Amazing Tacos!)
  • Beverly Hills Boulangerie (Quick Service)
  • Richter’s Burger Co. (Quick Service)
  • Lombard’s Seafood and Grill (Sit Down)
  • Moe’s Tavern- Flaming Moe or Duff Beer
  • Lard Lad Donut- The Famous Simpson Giant Pink Donut
  • Mel’s Drive-In (Quick Service)
  • Louie’s Italian Restaurant (Quick Service)
  • KidZone Pizza Company (Quick Service)
  • Cafe La Bamba (Sit Down and Character Meals)
  • Simpsons Land Food-There are a few different options inside The Simpsons Land that range from seafood, to grab and go, healthy options, sandwiches, pizza, etc. They are cafeteria style and can be found by entering Moe’s Tavern.

Reservations are taken at Lombard’s Seafood and Grill and Finnegan’s Bar and Grill. You can make reservations here . Check out this list where I share our favorite places to eat at Universal Orlando resort .

Universal Studios Orlando Review: Should You Plan a Visit?

I often get asked if Universal Orlando is worth a visit when you have young kids. My answer is yes and no…sorry!! I think with the opening of DreamWorks Land there will be more of a reason to take young kids to Universal .

We waited to visit Universal until my youngest was 42 inches tall. At that point we felt it was worth the cost to plan a visit. He was tall enough to ride everything except 2 rides.

With that being said, being tall enough and being ready and willing to ride some of the attractions can be different.

My oldest kids are tall enough to ride the Mummy but are not ready and choose to skip it every time we visit. (It is a bummer because it’s an awesome ride!) UPDATE: We finally rode the Mummy and they liked it!

I will never force my kids to ride an attraction they are not ready for and we skip it and enjoy something else.

There are many ways for younger kids to enjoy the park. Each park has great play areas, shows, and character meet and greets but, it is not like visiting Walt Disney World .

Your child will miss out on a lot of attractions if they do not meet the height requirements and it might be beneficial to wait.

Another thing to factor in is the scare factor and intensity of some of the attractions. If your kids are familiar with the Harry Potter franchise then a ride on Escape from Gringotts will not be a surprise.

However if this is your first encounter with the Harry Potter characters, specifically Voldemort and dementors, it may be too intense.

arrive early at universal studios

You know your family best and can make the best decision for them. We started visiting Universal when my youngest was 5 and there were a few rides he didn’t want to do.

We were okay with this and ended up loving our vacation. It depends on the ages and height of everyone visiting the parks.

I hope our Universal Studios Orlando tips help you plan your family visit to Universal. Please reach out if you have any questions.

The Very Best Times to Visit Universal Orlando in 2024 and 2025

Inside This Post

This is what Universal Orlando Resort trip planning sounds like around the Frog Pond: "We have to do Hagrid's first." "Are you crazy? Escape from Gringotts!" "I was thinking of splashing into the pool at Cabana Bay Beach Resort right after we check in." Yes. Even we (the savvy trip planners) can get hung up on how to tackle a Universal Orlando vacation. One of the few things we can agree on is WHEN to visit. But crowds are only one part of the equation when it comes to considering the best time to visit Universal Orlando! This post outlines some factors to keep in mind when planning your awesome Universal Orlando vacation (and of course, our top recs on when to visit).

  • Determining Factors
  • Spring: Feb. - April
  • Summer: May - July
  • Fall: Aug. - Oct.
  • Winter: Nov. - Jan.
  • What If It's Busy?

Planning When to Visit Universal Orlando in 2024 and 2025

While we have no crystal ball (we wish we did!), we do have historical trends available to pull from when making predictions. We're here to give you our best guesses on crowd levels based on our years of data collection and insights. And, action!

As we've said before with visiting Disney World , there's never a bad time to visit Universal Orlando. The Frog Family has hopped down during every season and successfully managed the crowds. We stick with our basic tips to maximize time — get to the park at opening, take breaks in the afternoon when the parks are at their busiest, make use of our Jump Start guide , park plans  and Orlando park plans app  and use Universal Express . For those of you who can, we highly recommend visiting the parks on weekdays, especially during peak times such as the week of Thanksgiving and the end of December into early January, as well as spring and summer breaks.

Best Times to Visit Universal Orlando - Ice Cream Treats Universal - Minion Freeze Ray Pop

We also highly recommend you consider staying on-site at one of Universal’s official hotels that offer Universal Express Unlimited — basically unlimited skip-the-line access on most rides at Universal Studios Florida and Universal Islands of Adventure. (We can't emphasize this enough! The value of getting your Express Pass for the duration of your stay is huge!) The Universal hotels that offer the benefit are Loews Portofino Bay Hotel , Universal Hard Rock Hotel and Loews Royal Pacific Resort . This skip-the-regular line benefit is a big help for saving time in the parks, especially if you're visiting on weekends.

Not staying at a Premier hotel ? Not to worry! All Universal Orlando Resort hotels offer Early Park Admission , which is also a super hopful tool to get a jump on your day. We cannot emphasize enough just how much we recommend getting to the parks early! For even more tips for visiting Universal during peak times, hop over to our full post .

The sooner you can purchase your tickets, the better chance you'll have at selecting your desired dates (and the more hotel availability you'll find!). Planning ahead is the name of the game — and you've already taken the first step by reading this post :) Just looking for the short answer on the least crowded times to visit Universal Orlando? Other Factors to Consider When Determining the Best Time to Visit Universal Orlando

Before booking your vacation to Universal on our site, we recommend you check our Crowd Calendar . You can get a view of the crowd levels by day, month or the whole year. You'll also find individual park recommendations so you can easily see estimated crowd levels, special events, weather and Universal hours.

Best Times to Visit Universal Orlando - Velocioaster

There's no denying there are better times to visit Universal Orlando than others. It should come as no surprise that the best time to visit Universal Orlando usually falls along with school schedules. Generally, when the tadpoles are out of school, there are higher crowds at Universal. This applies to one-day holidays such as Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a weeklong spring break or the big draw — summer vacation. The week of Thanksgiving and from Christmas into the new year are notably busy, as well.

Special events should also be a consideration in deciding the best time to visit, and they are also displayed on the Crowd Calendar. For example, Halloween Horror Nights can scare up a good crowd.

Big openings can also bring big crowds who want to be among the first to experience the thrills. In 2024, we can expect the opening of DreamWorks Land — a family-friendly themed land dedicated to characters and stories from DreamWorks Animation, replacing the former Woody Woodpecker's KidZone. But what's even more epic ? We're already eyeing the grand opening of Universal Epic Universe in 2025! The brand-new theme park — complete with its own Super Nintendo World (plus four other immersive worlds!), an entertainment center, dining, shopping and hotels — will undoubtedly draw high crowds for its debut, the remainder of the year and possibly beyond.

In the past years, we've found that more theme park-goers are planning their trip by specific season (rather than around crowds in years past). So, we've broken this post up by season, making it easy to find considerations, highlights and even the cheapest days to go for each one. Let's jump in!

Spring — February, March, April

Best Times to Visit Universal Orlando - Universal Mardi Gras Jester Girls

In February, Universal Studios Florida hosts the biggest party of the spring — Mardi Gras ! The New Orleans-inspired celebration is complete with Cajun and Carnaval flavors from all over the world, a lively Mardi Gras parade with bead throwing from the detailed floats, an impressive concert lineup and more. The jubilation continues all the way through April 7 in 2024 — perfect timing for anyone on spring break.

Things to Consider

Speaking of spring break , the biggest variable for spring crowds is when Easter falls. When it's earlier in the season, there is generally a shorter, more intense "spring break" as school districts narrow down the week they give kids off. When it's later in spring, there is generally a longer but less intense "spring break" season as school districts have more variance in the week they give kids off. In 2024, Easter falls on March 31, and in 2025, Easter falls on April 20. That means we should expect a shorter, more intense spring break season in 2024, but a longer, drawn-out season in 2025.

There's also a smaller holiday weekend around Presidents Day, which can see elevated crowds. On select Friday and Saturday nights in April, high school seniors from all over the state and beyond come to celebrate Grad Bash. These dates are important to watch out for because both parks typically close early, as they have exclusive access.

February can still dip into cooler temps, especially during early mornings and evenings. But it starts to warm up (but is still not too hot and humid) in March and April, making it one of the best times to visit in terms of weather.

Our Overall Pick:  The first half of February, prior to Presidents Day, tends to see the lowest crowds. The first week of March is best if you're aiming for warmer weather before the spring break crowds arrive. In 2024, since the spring break season is shorter, mid to late April will also be a great pick!

  • Feb. 1-8, 12-13, 26-29, 2024
  • March 4-8, 2024
  • March 3-7, 10-13, 2025
  • April 15-30, 2024
  • April 1-2, 22-25, 28-30, 2025
  • Feb. 9-11, 14-25, 2024
  • Feb. 14-17, 2025
  • March 9-31, 2024
  • March 14-31, 2025
  • April 5-21, 2025
  • Feb. 1, 4-8, 11-13 and 26-28, 2024
  • March 1-7, 2024
  • April 21-25 and 28-30, 2024

Summer — May, June, July

Best Times to Visit Universal Orlando - Volcano Bay - Wave Village

Scream and shout — school's out! The summer crowds are pretty steady as soon as Memorial Day weekend hits, all the way through back-to-school season. The Orlando weather also stays consistent with higher temperatures and afternoon showers.

But what better way to beat the heat than spending a day at Universal Volcano Bay or lounging by the pool at your resort?

While there aren't any major events going on at Universal Orlando, Universal Studios Florida usually hosts a low-key Fourth of July celebration. Expect DJ dance parties with SpongeBob, King Julien and other characters and a pyrotechnic display at night.

May starts out fairly quiet, but can be busier on the weekends. Particularly, on select Friday and Saturday nights, eighth graders are celebrating Gradventure nights. Similar to Grad Bash for high school seniors, they get exclusive party hours at both theme parks, which may cause shorter park hours.

Memorial Day Weekend is the unofficial start of summer, which is when you'll see the first uptick in crowds. Most schools are out of session by the second week of June, meaning crowd patterns will stay consistent until mid-August. Fourth of July tends to see peak summer crowds.

Our Overall Pick:  Weekdays in May are our favorite pick during this timeframe! You could also go with the first week of June before all schools are out, though May is only slightly cooler than June.

  • Monday through Thursday in the first half of May
  • First week of June 2024
  • May 2-5, 10-12, 14, 24-31, 2024
  • Elevated crowds in June
  • Elevated crowds in July, especially around July 4
  • May 1-2, 5-9 and 12-16, 2024
  • June 3-6, 9-13 and 16-20, 2024
  • Same price throughout July 2024, excluding July 3-7

Fall — August, September, October

Best Times to Visit Universal Orlando - Halloween Horror Nights 2023 - Archway Medallion

You may be wondering why August is lumped with fall — well, August is unique because the first half of the month typically sees the last of the summer crowds before schools start to jump  back into session.

But the second half? It starts to slow down as more and more tadpoles begin the new school year, making it a good time to visit if you want lower crowds (especially if you're planning an adults-only trip !). On the flip side, busier holiday weekends include Labor Day and Indigenous Peoples' Day during this timeframe.

The popularity of Halloween Horror Nights , however, has brought in more crowds, and the event regularly sells out. If you're visiting the resort for that time, and specifically for that event, make sure you purchase your tickets first and book your hotel early. Those weekends could see more guests who come in for the event and spend their daytime hours inside the parks.

While daytime crowds are typically not impacted too severely by HHN, know that Universal Studios Florida closes early on evenings when the event is taking place (Universal Islands of Adventure, however, remains open!). So while you shouldn't worry about event crowds terrorizing your day, you'll want to plan accordingly if you want to maximize your time by either visiting Universal Islands of Adventure or opting for a park-to-park ticket to hop over once Universal Studios Florida closes for the event. Wanna know more about the best time to visit Halloween Horror Nights? We've got all of the details in our full post . For more information on Universal Orlando hours, and which nights HHN will be taking place, check out our Crowd Calendar .

Also, keep in mind that September is the height of Orlando's rainy season . You should prepare for daily afternoon thunderstorms and possibly more rain than that. Come prepared with rain gear such as rain jackets, ponchos or umbrellas. With those caveats out of the way, we still feel that fall is a good time to visit Universal Orlando.

Our Overall Pick:  Historically, September has been the very best month of the year to visit Universal Orlando in terms of crowds because the kids have just returned to school. It is still our pick for the overall best month to visit.

  • The second half of August
  • Most days in September (minus the days around Labor Day)
  • Most weekdays in October (minus the days around Rosh Hashanah, Diwali and Indigenous Peoples' Day)
  • The first half of August
  • Aug. 28 - Sept. 2, 2024
  • Aug. 29 - Sept. 1, 2025
  • Oct. 3-6, 11-14, 25, 2024
  • Oct. 2-5, 10-13, 31, 2025
  • Aug. 18-22 and 25-28, 2024
  • Sept. 3-4 and 9-11, 2024
  • Oct. 1-3, 7-9, 21-24 and 28-31, 2024

Winter — November, December, January

From fearful frights to festive lights, Universal Orlando quickly transitions from Halloween horror to holiday galore in November. Orlando weather also cools down, along with lower humidity levels (believe it or not, it can get into the 40s in January!).

However, the pools at the resorts and Universal Volcano Bay are heated, so you can still take a dip if you wish (excluding inclement weather). It's the perfect time for a cup of Hot Butterbeer ! These months see some of the busiest times of the year, including the weeks of Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Eve.

Best Times to Visit Universal Orlando - Grinchmas Show

Christmas has also become a bigger deal at Universal Orlando than in past years with the arrival of  Christmas in the Wizarding World of Harry Potter . Muggles and wizards alike are flocking to the parks to enjoy the holiday decorations, entertainment and food in Hogwarts and Diagon Alley. Plus, Universal is home to the green meanie himself — The Grinch!

Aside from the major holidays — Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Eve — there are a few other small holidays and events to keep in mind:

  • Veterans Day (Nov. 11 — a Monday in 2024 and a Tuesday in 2025)
  • Martin Luther King Jr. Day (Jan. 15, 2024, and Jan. 20, 2025)
  • Rock the Universe (a Christian music festival usually at the end of January; Jan. 26-27, 2024)

The off-season in January and February can also see annual ride refurbishments (particularly for water rides) and shorter park hours until spring break season.

Our Overall Pick:  If the holiday festivities are a must-do, we'd recommend the first week or two of December, before schools are let out for Christmas break — or the week before or after Thanksgiving. Mid to late January is another great alternative if you want some of the lowest crowds of the year.

  • Nov. 6-7, 12-15, 18-22, 2024
  • Nov. 5-7, 12-14, 17-20, 2025
  • Weekdays in December (minus the weeks of Christmas and New Year's Eve)
  • Jan. 8-11, 22-25, 30-31, 2024
  • Nov. 1-5, 9-11, 25-30, 2024
  • Nov. 1-4, 11, 22-30, 2025
  • Dec. 20-31, 2024
  • Dec. 20-31, 2025
  • Jan. 1-7, 12-15, 26-29, 2024
  • Jan. 1-7, 17-20, 2025
  • Nov. 4-6 and 18-20, 2024
  • Dec. 2-4 and 9-11, 2024
  • Jan. 16, 22-23 and 29-30, 2024

What If I Can Only Go During a Busy Time?

Best Times to Visit Universal Orlando - Adults at Universal - Hagrid's

We get comments all the time from families and teachers who can only go during busy times that overlap with school breaks. Don't panic! Ultimately, the best time to visit Universal Orlando is when you can  go.

We've visited during every season and can manage the crowds with our own tips and park plans . Setting realistic expectations is the most important thing you can do!

During busier times, consider purchasing Universal Express passes or staying at a Universal premier hotel (which provides the free Universal Express Unlimited benefit). And if it's not in the budget, then be sure to take advantage of Early Park Admission if you're staying at any of the Universal Orlando hotels. Regardless of where you're staying, show up early to get a  hop  on the crowds.

In the summer, take a midday break when it's the most crowded and hottest, whether it's a long lunch at a table-service restaurant or going back to your hotel for a power nap or swim. In the winter when hours are reduced, plan for more park time and explore the resorts or CityWalk in the evenings — play mini-golf, watch a movie or try your hand at an escape room !

There you have it! Are you ready to hop to Universal Orlando? Let the trip countdown begin! Let us know in the comments below when you're visiting next.

Now you know the best time to visit Universal Orlando in 2024 and 2025. Wondering how crowds will be during your trip? Check out our Crowd Calendar . You'll find more resources to help you plan your Universal Orlando vacation in our Jump Start guide !

Hi! Just wanted to point out in the northeast this year , a lot of schools actually have two breaks being Easter is so early, spring break is still end of april so I beg to differ that this season will be shorter but more intense.

I was able to book a flight for normal rates last week to Orlando and book premier hotel and parks. This is unheard of from NY during break.

Hi Frog Friend!

Thanks for sharing your experience with us!

We will be coming to Universal Orlando 1st Dec to 6th Dec. After 1st Dec (after Thanksgiving weekend) are the parks expected to be quiet?

Yes, the week after Thanksgiving tends to be a quieter time for crowds. Hop over to our Crowd Calendar for a day-by-day look at expected crowd levels.

Great tips! My favorite time to visit the parks in Orlando is the first week of March. Great weather and spring break crowds haven’t started yet.

This is some awesome information!! I was thinking it was going to be super busy when we were there in April, but it looks like that might be a good time to go!!

It can be helpful in planning visits

February! Least busy and it is cooler outside!

Love all the information

Great info!

Great article on when best to go!

I actually was not aware that there was a cheaper time to consider going and I certainly didn't know that there were so many busy times, but that obviously does not surprise me. This was a very informative blog, so thank you. I will say years ago I was able to take my family in February and the crowds were wonderful because it wasn't busy. Unfortunately we haven't been able to go back yet because of the rising prices but I'm hoping someday soon! It's our absolute favorite place.

The best time is in December, the weather is perfect and it’s magical

Great Info!

I agree I think September is my absolute favorite month to visit with Halloween horrors nights and we liked that it wasn't so crowded.

We visited in May and we had a wonderful time!!!

Any time is a good time to visit, but I will say your crowd calendar was spot on for our trip in April.

i like that you break it down by busiest and cheapest

Mardi gras!!!!!! The float parade amazing!!! I think when you are in this magical place with friends and family anytime of year can be great

Super helpful! I think we need to plan a trip for next year.

We were there last week, and it was awesome! The two hour wait to meet the Grinch was worth it!

I bookmarked the Crowd Calendar as soon as I found out about it! So helpful!

May next year. Hope not too busy, but that is the soonest we can go and don't want July-August heat!

Thank you for all the good info!

Thank you for all the hard work you do to provide everyone with this information!

Best time to go is in February or March when most students are still in school and the parks are not packed and the lines are short.

The lowest crowds we experienced at Disneyland was during March spring break when the weather was not really great (cold and raining).

Thank you for all the tips!

We love to travel in late April or Early May...never bad crowds and beautiful weather.

This list of tips for universal studios orlando was written by family travel expert marcie cheung and contains affiliate links which means if you purchase something from one of my affiliate links, i may earn a small commission that goes back into maintaining this blog..

We recently got back from our first trip to Universal Studios Orlando and it was SO much bigger than Universal Studios Hollywood !

We thought we were pretty prepared since we had visited the California theme park but we were so wrong.

Keep scrolling to hear about our mistakes and the Universal Studios Orlando tips I wish I had known before our trip!

How to Plan Your Visit to Universal Studios Orlando

Visiting Universal Orlando Resort for the first time is super exciting! Here’s how you can plan your trip to make it awesome:

Buying Tickets

It’s a good idea to buy your tickets before you get to the park. You can buy them online from the Universal Orlando website. Sometimes, they have special deals, so keep an eye out!

Image of Marcie Cheung and her son dressed in Hogwarts robes in Diagon Alley at Universal Studios Florida. Photo credit: Sees the Days Photography

If you want to visit more than one park on the same day, think about getting a ‘park to park ticket’. This lets you hop between the Universal Orlando parks easily. The coolest way to do this is by taking the immersive Hogwarts Express!

We always buy our Universal Studios Orlando tickets through Get Away Today . They usually have the best deals and their customer service is unsurpassed.

Check when the parks open and close on the days you’re visiting. This is really important because sometimes the parks have special events and might close early or open late. You can find this info on the Universal Orlando website or the Universal App .

Download the Universal Orlando App

This app is super helpful! It has maps of the parks, so you won’t get lost. Plus, it shows you how long the wait times are for each ride. You can also use it to find places to eat (and mobile order) and restrooms.

Understand the Park’s Layout

If you’re a first-timer at Universal Studios Orlando, understanding the layout of the parks is super important. There are three main parts: Universal Studios Florida , Universal’s Islands of Adventure , and Volcano Bay , which is a water park.

Image of two boys dressed in Hogwarts robes doing a wand battle at Diagon Alley in Universal Studios Florida. Photo credit: Sees the Day Photography

Universal Studios Florida

This park is all about movies and TV shows. You’ll feel like you’re on a movie set! It’s perfect for fans of films and fun rides. Don’t miss out on the Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Diagon Alley, where you can hop on the Hogwarts Express!

Universal’s Islands of Adventure

This park is more about thrilling rides and adventures. It also has a part of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Hogsmeade. If you love roller coasters and action-packed attractions, start your adventure here!

Volcano Bay

If you’re visiting during hot weather, you might want to cool off at Volcano Bay. It’s a water park with awesome slides and pools. It’s a great place to relax and have fun in the water.

So, where should you start? If you’re a big Harry Potter fan or love movies, start at Universal Studios Florida. If you’re all about thrills and adventures, Islands of Adventure is your go-to. And if it’s splash time you’re after, head straight to Volcano Bay.

Each park offers something unique, so choose based on what excites you the most!

What to Wear to Universal Studios Orlando

Visiting Universal Studios Florida can be the adventure of a lifetime, especially if it’s your first time! To make the most of your trip, here are some favorite Universal Orlando tips about what to wear for a comfortable and fun experience.

Image of Marcie Cheung of Marcie in Mommyland and her family posing with Simpsons characters at Universal Studios Florida.

What to Wear to Universal Studios Orlando in the Summer

Orlando gets pretty hot and humid in the summer. You’ll also likely encounter some rain showers. So, it’s key to dress for both the sun and the rain.

Since you’ll be walking a lot, wear comfortable sneakers or supportive sandals. Don’t wear new shoes! Blisters are the last thing you want!

Opt for lightweight and breathable outfits. Think shorts, tees, or even airy dresses.

Don’t forget your sunglasses and hat to shield you from the sun. And always, always have sunscreen on hand.

A lightweight poncho can be a lifesaver during those unexpected summer showers.

What to Wear to Universal Studios Orlando in the Winter

Believe it or not, Florida can get chilly in the winter. So, be prepared for varying temperatures.

A lightweight long-sleeve tee with a sweater, jacket, or hoodie on top works great. Bring a heavier jacket if it’s really cold. We saw a LOT of people wearing ski hats in December.

Jeans or wool leggings are perfect for keeping you warm and comfy.

Stick to comfortable sneakers that can handle a day of exploration.

Universal Themed Clothing

Part of the fun at Universal Studios is showing off your fandom! Whether you’re a Harry Potter wizard, a Jurassic Park dinosaur enthusiast, a Simpsons fan, or into Marvel superheroes, themed shirts and accessories add to the excitement. Dress up as your favorite character and enjoy the magical atmosphere!

So, when you’re packing to visit Universal Studios, remember these tips to stay comfortable and enjoy every moment, whether you’re exploring the water park, wandering through Harry Potter’s world, or enjoying the other amazing attractions.

Remember, the right outfit can make your adventure even more memorable!

Prioritize Must-See Universal Orlando Attractions

Visiting Universal Studios Florida for the first time is super exciting! To make the most of your trip, here are some tips and tricks, especially for first-timers.

Image of a boy wearing Hulk hands in front of the Hulk rollercoaster at Universal Studios Florida. Photo credit: Sees the Day Photography

Top Attractions

The wizarding world of harry potter.

This is a must-see! From Hogwarts castle to thrilling rides, it’s a magical experience. It’s laid out in two parks: Diagon Alley is in Univeral Studios while Hogsmeade is in Islands of Adventure. I recommend getting a park hopper ticket to do both AND ride the Hogwarts Express.

Roller Coasters

If you love thrills, don’t miss out on rides like the Incredible Hulk Coaster. My 9-year-old is a huge roller coaster fan and he said that the Hulk tops his list.

Despicable Me Minion Mayhem

This ride is perfect for the whole family. It’s the same as the one at Universal Studios Hollywood and it’s quite possible that you’re kids will want to ride it multiple times.

Managing Time

The parks can get crowded, especially near popular rides like Harry Potter. To avoid long waits, try to visit these rides either early in the morning or later in the evening when it’s less crowded.

Remember, the two parks, Islands of Adventure and Universal Studios, are walking distance from each other. Plan to visit attractions close to each other to save time.

Use the Universal Orlando app to check wait times and plan which ride to go to next.

These tips should help you prioritize and enjoy the best Universal Orlando attractions without getting bogged down in bottlenecks.

Use the Universal Express Pass

If you’re a first-timer at Universal Studios Orlando, you should definitely know about the Universal Express Pass . This is a special pass that lets you skip regular lines at most rides and attractions. It’s a game-changer, especially on busy days!

What is the Express Pass?

  • It’s like a fast pass to get you to the front of the line quicker.
  • You can choose between different types of Express Passes. Some let you skip the line once per ride, while others, like the Unlimited Pass, let you skip as many times as you want.

Is it Worth It?

  • If you hate waiting in long lines and want to see as much as possible, it’s totally worth it.
  • Prices start at $79.99 for Universal Studios Florida and go up depending on the park and pass type.
  • Think about how much time you’ll save. More time means more fun!

If you want to do the Express Pass, book it as soon as you can. We checked the prices while we were in the park and it was about $300 for the Unlimited Pass for same-day.

Remember, you need to buy your theme park ticket separately. So, if you want to make the most out of your visit to Universal Studios Orlando, consider getting the Express Pass. It could turn a good day into a great one!

Stay Hydrated and Well-Fed

When you’re having a blast at Universal Studios Orlando, it’s super important to stay hydrated and not get too hungry. Here’s a tip: carry a water bottle to keep yourself hydrated as you explore the parks.

For food, there are lots of cool places to grab a bite. If you’re in the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, you’ve got to try the famous Butterbeer. It’s a sweet, frothy drink that tastes like magic!

Image of Marcie Cheung with a Krusty Burger at Universal Studios Florida. Photo credit: Marcie Cheung

My kids are huge Simpsons fans and they totally geeked out when we had lunch at Krusty Burger. The food was actually better than I expected.

Universal has many restaurants and snack spots. You can find everything from quick bites to sit-down meals. Remember to take breaks and enjoy some unique park treats. They’re part of the fun experience at Universal Studios!

Take Advantage of Early Park Admission

Here’s a super cool tip for first-timers at Universal Studios Orlando: If you stay at one of Universal’s hotels, you can get into the parks early! This means you can enjoy some of the coolest rides before the regular crowd rushes in.

Image of two hotel keys at Universal Studios Orlando. Photo credit: Marcie Cheung of Marcie in Mommyland

For example, while we were there in December, hotel guests could enter Universal Studios Florida up to one hour before it opened. You could ride popular attractions like Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts or Despicable Me Minion Mayhem.

At Universal Islands of Adventure, you can enjoy Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey™ or the thrilling Jurassic World VelociCoaster an hour early too!

And at Universal Volcano Bay, you get a 30-minute head start to enjoy slides like Krakatau Aqua Coaster.

Make the most of this extra time. Plan to hit the most popular rides first. This way, you can enjoy them without long lines. It’s a great way to start your exciting day at Universal!

Explore the Wizarding World During Off-Peak Hours

Here’s a wizardly tip: visit the Wizarding World during off-peak hours to dodge those massive crowds. The best times are usually right when the park opens or later in the afternoon.

This way, you can explore Harry Potter’s magical world more comfortably and get on those awesome rides like Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts without the long wait. It’s like having a magic wand to beat the crowds!

Stay On-Site for Added Benefits

If you’re planning a first-time visit to Universal Studios Orlando, think about staying at one of their resort hotels. There are lots of perks!

Image of the water taxi in front of Loews Sapphire Falls in Universal Studios Florida. Photo credit: Marcie Cheung

First, you get into the park an hour earlier, which is awesome for beating the crowds. They have free transport too, so you can get to and from the park easily. We thought the water taxis were super fun!

There are different types of hotels, from more affordable options like Universal’s Endless Summer Resort to fancier ones like Hard Rock Hotel and Loews Sapphire Falls . These hotels have cool stuff like pools, dining options, and even a rooftop bar at Universal’s Aventura Hotel !

Plus, if you stay at a Premier hotel, you get a free Universal Express Unlimited Pass to skip regular lines at most rides. That’s a huge bonus!

And, you can have any stuff you buy in the park sent straight to your hotel for free. Super convenient, right? These hotels make your Universal Orlando trip extra special and hassle-free

Stay Updated on Shows and Parades

When you’re at Universal Studios Orlando, don’t miss out on their cool shows and parades. They’ve got some awesome stuff like ‘The Bourne Stuntacular’ – it’s full of amazing stunts that’ll wow you.

Image of the exterior of the Bourne Spectacular at Universal Studios Florida. Photo credit: Marcie Cheung

If you’re curious about how they make movie special effects, check out ‘Universal Orlando’s Horror Make-Up Show’. It’s not only educational but super fun too!

For music fans, ‘The Blues Brothers Show’ is a must-see. And if you love Harry Potter, ‘The Tales of Beedle the Bard’ in Diagon Alley is magical. Make sure to find a good spot early for these shows – they’re popular and get crowded fast!

Prepare for Weather Changes

When you’re heading to Universal Studios Orlando, be ready for sudden weather changes. It’s smart to pack a poncho or a light rain jacket, especially if there’s rain in the forecast. Wear clothes and shoes that can handle getting wet, just in case you’re caught in a shower.

If it looks like rain, start your day at Islands of Adventure. It has more outside attractions that might close in bad weather, so you’ll want to check those out first. But don’t worry, there are plenty of cool indoor rides too!

Image of the Cat in the Hat ride at Universal Studios Florida. Photo credit: Marcie Cheung

Over at Islands of Adventure, you’ve got The Cat in The Hat and Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey, among others.

At Universal Studios Florida, you can enjoy indoor rides like Revenge of the Mummy, TRANSFORMERS: The Ride – 3D, and Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts.

These rides are perfect for staying dry and having fun, even when it’s raining outside!

Save Time for Shopping and Souvenirs

At Universal Studios Orlando, don’t forget to save some time for shopping and grabbing cool souvenirs! Each area in the park has unique shops filled with awesome merchandise.

First-timers will love visiting Ollivanders in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter for a magical wand, or the Universal Studios Store for t-shirts and hats. You can find almost anything, from cool Jurassic Park gear to fun Minion toys. It’s the perfect way to remember your amazing trip!

  • Best time of the year to visit Universal Orlando Resort

There may not necessarily be a good or bad day of the week to visit Universal Orlando Resort (it’s a slightly complicated story, and we walk you through it all in our complete guide ), but there absolutely are good and bad times of the year in which to take your vacation. The question, then, becomes just when those are, and which is the very best?

The time of the year you choose to visit Universal can have an impact on crowd levels, park operating hours, and ticket cost, to name a few things. But never fear! With the help of this page, along with our FREE crowd calendar , you’ll have no trouble selecting the ideal stretch of time to explore Universal Studios Florida , Islands of Adventure , and Volcano Bay .

Best Times to Visit Universal Orlando Resort in 202 4

Let’s start with the basics: in general, theme parks have both a slow and busy season. For most guests, the “best” time to visit is when crowds are the lowest, which usually correlates to lower wait times and easier navigation within the park. In 2024, these dates will include:

  • January 4 to 15 (between the New Year and Martin Luther King, Jr. Day)
  • January 22 to February 16 (between MLK Day and Presidents’ Day)
  • February 26 to the Beginning of March (between Presidents’ Day and spring break)
  • Weekdays throughout September to December (minus Thanksgiving week and Christmas/New Year’s week)

Halloween Horror Nights is an enormously popular event that takes place on select nights, typically in September and October. Event nights often attract larger crowds during the day. Friday is the weekday that draws the most guests, so it may be wise to avoid this day entirely during HHN ‘s run.

It’s also worth noting that there are some drawbacks to visiting on dates with low crowds; the parks tend to have shorter operating hours, and some restaurants only operate seasonally. In fact, if you’re a bit more flexible on the crowd-level aspect, we recommend heading down when crowds are moderate, such as weekends (rather than weekdays) in October and November. As we’ve mentioned before , you’ll find there’s more “excitement in the air” when there are some more people around, and Universal’s unique brand of excitement is one of its most incredible features.

If you’re looking for the absolute least-crowded month to stay at Universal Orlando, September is a solid bet. Most kids have headed back to school by this time, so you can more reliably count on lower crowds as a result.

Best Times to Visit Universal Orlando in 202 5

As you look toward planning your visit for 2025, we anticipate similar periods of time that will be an excellent time for you and your family to enjoy everything that Universal Orlando Resort has to offer. Our prediction for the best dates to visit include:

  • January 6 to 17 (between the New Year and Martin Luther King, Jr. Day)
  • January 27 to February 14 (between MLK Day and Presidents’ Day)
  • February 24 to the Beginning of March (between Presidents’ Day and spring break)

Busiest Times to Visit Universal Orlando in 202 4

The most crowded time to tour the parks is also the most popular time of the year for families looking to take their vacations: summer . The kids are out of school and in the theme-park resorts, and that – combined with the blazing Florida heat – is reason enough to try visiting in another time of the year, if possible.

In addition to the summertime, you’ll want to avoid any other holidays that kids have off from school. In 2024, the busiest dates include:

  • January 1 to 3 (New Year’s)
  • January 15 to 21 (Martin Luther King, Jr. Day)
  • February 19 to 25 (Presidents’ Day)
  • Beginning of March to Mid-April (spring break)
  • May to Mid-August (summer break)
  • Thanksgiving week
  • Christmas week to the New Year

If descending upon Orlando during summer break is the only viable option for your family, your best bet is to avoid arriving on the weekend; while most days in the summer will be crowded, weekdays are typically a little less so.

Busiest Times to Visit Universal Orlando in 202 5

It is safe to say that we predict the times of year when many are off from work or school will cause larger crowds within the Theme Parks. We anticipate the busiest times of year to visit the Universal Orlando Resort to be:

  • January 18 to 26 (Martin Luther King, Jr. Day)
  • February 15 to 23 (Presidents’ Day)

What about holidays?

Wondering why we suggest avoiding the parks on holidays? Well, just like summer break, the kids are out of school – but, in addition, the parents are off work, as well. Many families plan their vacations around annual holidays for this very reason.

The most crowded holidays that you’ll almost certainly want to avoid visiting on are:

  • New Year’s Day
  • Easter (March 31, 2024 & April 20, 2025)
  • Thanksgiving (November 28, 2024 & November 27, 2025)
  • Christmas Eve
  • Christmas Day
  • New Year’s Eve

If you’re concerned about missing out on seasonal experiences, like Christmas in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter or Universal’s Holiday Parade Featuring Macy’s , don’t fret! These offerings are available for much longer periods of time than just the holidays themselves – for example, the Holiday Parade usually takes place from mid-November through early January. That means you can still embrace the holiday spirit on a weekday in November – you just won’t have to embrace the crowds, too. Holidays at Universal Orlando Resort will be celebrated all season long, typically from mid-November to the beginning of January.

Of course, when it comes to those crowds, not all holidays are created equal. Smaller holidays like Labor Day (September 2, 2024 & September 1, 2025) and Veteran’s Day (November 11, 2024 & November 11, 2025) will still attract more people, but it will be a significantly smaller amount than, say, Christmas Day.

Bonus tips and tricks

If you’re still conflicted about the time of year you’d prefer to visit, we have a couple of other tricks up our sleeve to help you decide.

Perhaps most importantly, we want to stress the usefulness of our completely FREE crowd calendar . When it comes down to planning the specific dates you want to spend in the parks, this resource is the best way to determine how crowd levels will fluctuate from one day to the next. Thanks to our precise algorithm and the magic of self-learning technology, you can be sure you’re getting impeccably accurate and up-to-date predictions for Universal Orlando ‘s crowds.

In addition to our calendar, you may find it helpful to check out Universal’s pricing for the dates you’re considering. The reasoning behind this tip is that, in August 2020, Universal switched to a date-based pricing model – simply put, tickets to visit on more popular days now cost more, and tickets to visit on less popular days cost less. That means looking at how admission prices vary throughout the dates you’re considering may help you decide which will be more or less to your liking in terms of crowdedness.

Last, but certainly not least, if you’re planning to visit on a more crowded date, we recommend investing in Express Passes. Sure, the crowds will still be present, but you’ll have a much easier time experiencing all the rides and shows that you want to without worrying about wait times. Be sure to check out our complete insider’s guide to Express Passes for the full lowdown.

Universal Studios Orlando Resort

For those of you who are new to the Universal experience and are a bit confused like I was, Florida’s Universal Orlando Resort consists of:

  • Two theme parks: Universal Studios and  Islands of Adventure
  • A water theme park: Volcano Bay
  • A shopping, restaurant, and entertainment complex: Universal CityWalk Orlando
  • Six onsite Loews Hotels
  • An upcoming theme park,  Epic Universe , expected to open in early 2025

Its gigantic size is one of the biggest differences when comparing Universal Orlando vs. Universal Hollywood, as Universal Hollywood is much smaller.

Together, the Universal Orlando Resort covers 541 acres of land and welcomes over 11 million annual visitors from all around the world.

The following article is a sample 1-day touring plan for Florida’s Universal Studios theme park whose primary attraction is The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Diagon Alley.

The best Universal Studios itinerary involves utilizing this practical touring plan and customizing your final ride and attraction choices based on your family’s interests.

*Look for a new ride titled Illumination’s Villain-con Minion Blast opening at Universal Studios Orlando in the summer of 2023!

Due to increased concern over safety and sanitation, the Universal theme parks have implemented a host of new measures that may impact your experience. Be sure to check the Universal homepage to review current considerations for your visit.

Universal Studios Diagon Alley and our 1-day Universal Studios itinerary

Universal Studios Touring Plan

Touring plans make it easy for you to get the most out of an experience by outlining the order you should visit rides and attractions.

In fact, having a game plan before heading into the park is one of our 45 Universal Studios tips that you absolutely need to read before your first visit.

Both our Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure touring plans were created for those visiting the Universal theme parks for one day each.

This itinerary also assumes that you are entering the park right at the opening time and staying into the evening.

Finally, although we utilized this Universal Studios Orlando touring plan while staying on-site (which granted us automatic Universal Express Passes), it may still be used by visitors who do not have an Express Pass – we’ll show you how!

Universal Studios Florida Hours

Universal Studios Florida hours vary, by the day, by the month, and by the season.

It is very important to check the Theme Park Hours schedule for the day that you plan on visiting Universal so that you can plan your experience accordingly.

The Universal Studios theme park hour calendar also includes information on what days offer Early Park Admission, as well as lists temporary attraction closure information.

Early Park Admission is a free perk when you book a Universal vacation package, stay at a Universal resort hotel, or use your Preferred or Premier Annual Pass.

This perk allows you to enter a designated Universal theme park 1-hour before the scheduled opening (select days only).

Additional planning tip: Take note that Universal and CityWalk hours, as well as daily showtimes, are not released until approximately 1 calendar month in advance.

Universal Studios Crowd Calendar

Our Universal Studios Orlando one-day touring plan assumes moderate to high crowds at the park when lines are expected to be long.

This exact plan was utilized when crowds were rated 9/10.

No matter when you visit, however, this 1-Day Universal Orlando touring plan is optimized and ordered so that walking and your wait in lines are minimized.

Universal Studios touring plan Express Pass sign

Universal Studios Express Pass

There is no denying that when the Universal Studios crowd calendar predicts moderate to high crowds, the waiting in lines can become incredibly draining and time-consuming.

To help offset time spent standing in lines, Universal Studios allows you to add Universal Express access to your theme park admission.

Universal Express is an all-day pass that allows you to skip the regular lines – and use a special Express Pass line – at select Universal attractions.

If you are staying on-site at one of  Universal’s premier resort hotels , Universal Express Unlimited is free for every day of your visit. (Your hotel keycard serves as your Universal Express pass.)

If you are not staying on-site and wish to purchase Universal Express passes, the cost varies by day and expected crowds. So during peak times, prices will be higher.

Current prices can be found on the Universal Orlando Resort website.

Additional planning tip: Universal Express is separate from regular admission. In other words, you must purchase BOTH a Universal park base ticket along with an Express Pass add-on.

It’s easiest to buy Express passes online. You can also buy them at the entrance gates and throughout all three parks at dozens of locations.

Read here to find out the qualifying rides, exact wait times, and an explanation of whether or not we think Universal Express Pass is worth it !

Universal Studios Orlando: One Day Touring Plan

Prior to visiting Universal Orlando, be sure to download the official Universal Orlando Resort app on the  App Store  or the  Google Play Store .

The Universal Orlando Resort app provides:

  • An interactive park map
  • Wait times and wait time alerts you can set
  • Mobile food and drink ordering for select restaurants
  • A virtual wallet where you can purchase and store your tickets and Express Passes
  • Virtual Line experience selection queue

Universal Studios’ Virtual Line program allows you to use your phone app (or kiosks at the ride) to make a reservation for your entire travel party to visit various attractions.

The use of virtual lines and what rides offer it varies by the day.

To make a Virtual Line reservation, go to the Virtual Line Experience drop-down from the main menu on the Universal app and select “Virtual Line Venues”. Click on the ride and select the half-hour increment that is available in which you’d like to ride.

At your selected time, simply show your phone at the attraction and you will immediately be admitted into the ride/show.

Keep in mind that the Virtual Line reservation system only works if you are physically inside the park.

Also, you can only reserve two ride times at a time meaning that you may not add another attraction until a previous ride time has passed.

See the screenshot below for what it looks like to reserve Virtual Line times.

Universal Virtual Line app screenshot

Universal Orlando Resort has a parking and transportation structure consisting of two gigantic multi-story parking lots and a centralized transportation hub that allows you to access Universal Studios, Islands of Adventure, CityWalk, and Volcano Bay.

The parking garage opens 2 hours before the official park opening to accommodate those eligible for Early Park Admission. ($27/day for regular self-parking, $60/day for prime parking.)

If you are driving to the resort and are not eligible for Early Park Admission, we recommend arriving at the Universal parking garage 60 minutes prior to the official opening.

It then takes approximately 15 minutes to walk from the parking garage to the park’s entrance turnstiles. This brings you to the entrance a perfect 45 minutes before the official opening.

Alternatively, Universal Orlando on-site resort transportation to the parks via water taxis and shuttles begins 2 hours before the official opening, or 1 hour before Early Park Admission.

Guests staying on-site during peak periods should catch the first ride of the morning in order to be the first into the Wizarding World during the early entry period.

Family photo at Universal Studios

Entering the Park

As of now, Universal Orlando does not require advanced reservations to get into any of their Orlando theme parks.

In addition, they are no longer limiting capacity as they had been during the pandemic.

With that said, we always recommend getting to the turnstiles 45 minutes prior to park opening (and 30 minutes before Early Park Admission), especially on projected busy days.

This act has long been known as ‘rope-drop’.

Rope drop involves getting to Universal Studios before it begins operating for the day so that you can be among the very first guests to enter and enjoy the attractions.

Rope dropping is the single most important key to an efficient touring plan in order to avoid long lines. First thing in the morning, there are no lines and fewer people.

The same four rides you experience in 1 hour upon rope dropping can take as long as 3 hours after 10:30 AM.

Additional planning tip: On days when Universal does not offer Early Park Admission, the gates typically open 30 minutes before the advertised opening.

Guests are restricted to the front of the park where Despicable Me Minion Mayhem often opens to all guests 10–15 minutes before the official opening.

Our recommended Universal Studios arrival times (during peak periods) with Early Park Admission:

  • 6:00-6:15 AM: Leave the onsite hotel or arrive at Universal parking garage
  • 6:30 AM: Arrive at park turnstiles
  • 7:00 AM: Early Park Admission entry – head straight to Diagon Alley
  • 8:00 AM: Regular park opening time

Our recommended Universal Studios arrival times (during peak periods) without Early Park Admission:

  • 7:00 AM: Leave the onsite hotel or arrive at Universal parking garage
  • 7:15 AM: Arrive at park turnstiles
  • 7:45 AM: Guests typically let into the front of the park to ride Despicable Me Minon Mayhem
  • 8:00 AM: Park opening time

Additional planning tip: Due to a strict bag and locker policy and the fact that personal belongings are not allowed on many of the rides, be sure to review what to bring to Universal Studios in your day bag as you prepare for your visit.

Likewise, be sure to have an understanding of the Universal Orlando locker system as you will need to store your belongings while riding most rides.

Diagon Alley fire breathing dragon

Universal Studios Touring Plan: Morning

Upon arriving at the park, use your Universal app to make Virtual Line reservations.

Once the park opens, walk directly to the Harry Potter area without stopping for anything.

In other words, if you want to experience the Wizarding World of Harry Potter without shoulder-to-shoulder crowds, you must arrive before everyone else does.

There’s no other way.

When you arrive at Diagon Alley, take it all in!

Browse the shops and enjoy the atmosphere of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter.

This is a great time to buy a wand from Ollivander’s and let the kids cast spells without long waits or crowds.

When spending 1-day at Universal Studios, be sure to visit Olivander's Wand Shop

Morning Itinerary

Similar to experiencing the best rides at Universal’s Islands of Adventure , we recommend visiting the top rides at Universal Studios immediately upon park opening.

The following attractions typically experience the longest wait times if not done right away.

Likewise, visit these attractions in this exact order to decrease time spent zig-zagging around the park.

*Rides with (EP) listed after their names denote that the ride qualifies for Express Pass.

1. Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts (EP). While in the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, be sure to go to:

  • Ollivander’s Wand Shop
  • Gringott’s Money Exchange
  • Knight’s Bus

Then, back-track to the front of the park and do these rides:

2. Despicable Me Minion Mayhem (EP)

3. Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit (EP)

4. Transformers: The Ride 3D (EP)

5. Race Through New York Starring Jimmy Fallon (EP)

6. Revenge of the Mummy (EP)

7. Fast & Furious: Supercharged (EP)

Additional planning tip: This plan does not assume you’re using child swap, which allows parents to swap supervising a child who does not meet a height requirement without waiting in line twice.

If you do use child swap, your day will move more slowly as you have to wait for two people to ride each ride.

Ride The Simpsons Ride as part of your Universal Studios touring plan

Universal Studios Touring Plan: Afternoon

I recommend saving Universal shows for the afternoon and evening.

This includes the Bourne Stuntacular, Horror and Make-up Show, Shrek 4-D, Animal Actors on Location, and Fear Factor Live.

Daily showtimes vary and can be found on the app. Adapt your afternoon itinerary according to what showtimes are available.

1. Shrek 4-D (45 min.); Separate theater for those with Express Pass.

2. The Bourne Stuntacular (26 min); Despite a potentially long wait/line, don’t miss this one!

3. Horror & Make-up Show (25 min.)

4. E.T. Adventure (EP)

5. Woody Woodpecker’s Nuthouse Coaster (EP)

6. Animal Actors on Location (20 min.)

7. The Simpsons Ride (EP). While in the queue, be on the lookout for an appearance by an animated Doc Brown.

8. Kang & Kodos Twirl ‘n’ Hurl (EP)

9. Men in Black: Alien Attack (EP).

10. Fear Factor Live (20 min.)

11. Browse the Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Diagon Alley again.

Next, ride the Hogwart’s Express (EP) if you have a park-to-park pass.

11. Watch Universal Orlando’s Cinematic Celebration or other seasonal evening entertainment; these have scheduled showtimes so be sure to check the Universal app.

Additional planning tip: If you love theme parks, Walt Disney World is only 9 miles away from Universal Orlando! Check out our 7-day Orlando itinerary that includes both a Universal and a Disney World vacation!

Universal Studios Butterbeer

Universal Studios Dining

Another one of the top tips for visiting Universal Studios is to skip the typical hot dogs and chicken tenders in order to indulge in the unique dining options that are exclusive to Universal Studios.

In fact, the best itinerary for Universal Studios Orlando includes eating at a themed restaurant, such as the Leaky Cauldron in Diagon Alley.

Its traditional British food and perfectly Harry Potter pub-themed atmosphere make for an experience that you simply cannot find anywhere else.

Also, be sure to try a Butterbeer!

This iconic non-alcoholic drink, which comes in hot, cold, and frozen varieties, is sold everywhere inside the Harry Potter areas of the parks.

In addition, be sure to check out the best restaurants in Citywalk for another incredibly unique experience.

Additional planning tip: Keep in mind that you can make online reservations ahead of time for full-service restaurants and Universal CityWalk in order to avoid the lines during busy seasons.

Ride Hogwart's Express as part of your Universal Studios touring plan

If You Want More Harry Potter Fun

If you’re a Potterhead you will absolutely not be disappointed by the immersive theming of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter found throughout Universal Orlando.

Their amazing attention to detail is what makes a trip to Universal Orlando Resort a must-do vacation destination for most Harry Potter Fans.

If you’re a huge fan, you’ll also want to add additional time ( specifically related to Harry Potter ) to your Universal Studios touring plan in order to enjoy it to the fullest.

Next, be sure to purchase a Park-to-Park Ticket for Universal Orlando that will serve as your ticket to ride Hogwart’s Express.

In other words, a Park-to-Park Ticket is required in order to ride Hogwart’s Express, and you can’t ride it without one.

(In case you don’t know, Hogwart’s Express is an actual train that travels between Universal Studios and Island of Adventure, allowing you to visit both Diagon Alley and Hogsmeade in one day.)

Additional planning tip: Universal’s Harry Potter experience includes Diagon Alley at Universal Studios Florida and Hogsmeade at Islands of Adventure ( home to Hagrid’s Magical Creature Motorbike Adventure – a fan favorite! ).

You’ll find the famous Ollivander’s Wand shop in both Hogsmeade and Diagon Alley.

Here, you can purchase both standard and interactive wizard wands as well as participate in a wand-fitting demonstration.

Through a sensor in the tip of the interactive wands, wanna-be wizards and witches can perform 25 spells through both Diagon Alley  and  Hogsmeade.

This requires being on the lookout for gold medallions along the walkways signaling you when to cast spells.

Potterheads can look forward to lighting the chandelier in the window at Flimflam’s Lantern or to repairing a suit of armor at the blacksmith’s with a simple wave of their wand.

We have never been to Universal Studios bt have been to Disney 20+ times. This is the perfect itinerary to dip our toes in!

You totally have to try Universal! We love Disney too…but now that the kids are older, they prefer Universal hands-down 🙂

Loads of very useful information here in this post. Last time we traveled to Orlando we only made it to the Disney parks and I’m thinking it would probably be a good idea to go back and visit Universal Studios. Thanks for sharing all these insights!

Yes, we started with Disney too! As the kids have gotten a little older, they absolutely LOVE Universal, although I haven’t had the heart to ask them which they like better 😉

Awesome tips and perfect itinerary, can’t wait to actually get out there and experience Universal again! thanks for the travel inspiration.

You’re welcome! It is definitely a place that we would love to return to year-after-year!

I dont know how this is possible, BUT I have never been to Universal Studios! Its very high on my to do list. I gotta get my kids to read Harry Potter first.

What?!?! I can’t believe that you haven’t been…but I am so happy that now you have a little info for when you do go! Yay! If the kids never get around to reading Harry Potter, no worries 🙂 It is so much more than that!!

You’re not going to believe this but I haven’t been to Universal Studios in 20 years! We really need to take the kids and this is the perfect one day touring guide!! So much detail- thank you Jen!!

Yay! You’re welcome! It’s really how amazing it all is! …It’s too bad that these awesome American theme parks have to be so expensive though. I feel like we’d go there way more if they were more affordable 🙂

The Universal studio is on my ‘must do’ and ‘must see’ places. I’ll like to compare it with Motiongate in Dubai. I’ll like to see Shrek in 4d. Thanks for a complete guide.

You’re welcome! It really is a truly amazing place! I was glad that we waited until our kids were a bit older to go there, for the rollercoasters and thrill rides are not-to-miss!

Surprising things you can do at Universal Orlando without a park ticket

Tarah Chieffi

You've booked your hotel, purchased your tickets and spent months planning the perfect Universal Orlando vacation.

Hopefully, you haven't packed your itinerary too full, because one, there's a good chance you'll be hot, tired and ready for a break when the afternoon sun hits its peak, and two, there's a ton of fun to be found outside of Universal's two theme parks — Universal Studios Florida and Universal's Islands of Adventure — and Universal's Volcano Bay water park.

Related: How to use points to save money at Universal Orlando

Here are eight activities at Universal Orlando that don't require a park ticket, but may require you to sing, escape hungry dinosaurs or learn to hula.

'Escape' into your favorite movies at Universal's Great Movie Escape

universal studios orlando visit

Universal Orlando is known for bringing your favorite movies to life on rides like Jurassic World VelociCoaster and Hagrid's Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure , but the park's newest attraction makes you a main character in two of the world's most popular movie franchises.

At Universal's Great Movie Escape at CityWalk, you can choose from two highly immersive escape room experiences — one themed to "Back to the Future" and the other to "Jurassic World." Both take about an hour to complete and have the capacity to be tailored to your group's size (up to eight guests) and level of experience, ensuring nobody leaves without the thrill of escaping in time.

universal studios orlando visit

In Back to the Future: Outatime, your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to pry Doc Brown's newest time travel device from the hands of Biff Tannen before he alters the timeline forever. You'll encounter familiar scenes from all three films — and timelines — as you solve clues to track down Doc Brown's prototype.

In Jurassic World: Escape, your group arrives at work for their first day on the job as geneticists-in-training at Isla Nublar. As often happens in the "Jurassic World" films, the dinosaurs don't exactly go along with InGen's plans, and you find yourself needing to make a very quick escape from the genetics lab.

Each escape room experience is separately ticketed and pricing starts at $50 per person or $300 for a private group experience of eight people.

Play a round of miniature golf

universal studios orlando visit

Also located at Universal CityWalk, you'll find one of the quirkiest, most outrageously themed mini-golf experiences you're likely to ever come across. Hollywood Drive-In Golf is a '50s sci-fi-themed mini-golf course with 36 holes, larger-than-life creepy crawlies and kitsch to spare.

You can choose between The Haunting of Ghostly Greens and Invaders from Planet Putt or make it a "double feature" and play both for a total of 36 holes of sci-fi fun.

If you go in the evening, you can play under the glow of neon lights with your own colorful light-up ball (available for purchase) that you can bring home as a souvenir.

Eighteen-hole pricing is $19.99 for adults and $17.99 for kids ages 3 to 9, and 36-hole pricing is $36.98 for adults and $32.98 for kids.

Go on a nature walk

universal studios orlando visit

One of the best things about Universal Orlando's size is how walkable it is. The resort's two parks — Universal Studios Florida and Universal's Islands of Adventure — are connected via the CityWalk area, and there are Garden Walk paths that connect all but two of Universal's hotels (those two being Universal's Endless Summer Resort — Dockside Inn and Suites and Universal's Endless Summer Resort — Surfside Inn and Suites, Universal's value properties).

Not only are the paths a convenient way to get back and forth from the parks (while sneaking a few extra steps in), they are also a much more peaceful and beautiful way to start or end your day than waiting in line for a seat on a crowded bus.

The Garden Walk paths are lined with gorgeous gardens and tropical foliage, and you can often spot lizards scurrying about (a particularly joyful experience if you have kids in tow). For much of the way, the paths run along the waterway that takes guests to and from the parks on water taxis.

Near Universal's Hard Rock Hotel , there is even a butterfly garden where you'll encounter butterflies fluttering about the flowers planted specifically to attract them to the area.

Related: These are the best hotels at Universal Orlando for 2022

If you are staying at Universal's Cabana Bay Beach Resort , Universal's Aventura Hotel or Loews Sapphire Falls Resort, you also have access to a pathway that leads directly to Volcano Bay water park .

See the newest big-screen blockbusters

universal studios orlando visit

There aren't many places where you can "ride the movies" during the day and then see a movie on the big screen at night, but at Universal Orlando you can do just that.

Universal Cinemark at CityWalk has 20 screens that show new releases and hosts special events — like 2022's BlumFest event celebrating Blumhouse Productions' horror movies — with perks moviegoers appreciate like plush loungers, tasty treats and a full bar.

If you park in Universal Orlando's parking garage, you can be reimbursed at the theater when you show your parking receipt for any movies after 6 p.m. and matinee showings between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. when you purchase two or more tickets.

Shop for a wizarding wand

universal studios orlando visit

As you might expect in such a magical location, there are brass medallions set into the pavement in both sections of The Wizarding World of Harry Potter (Hogsmeade at Universal's Islands of Adventure and Diagon Alley at Universal Studios Florida) where you can use your interactive wand to cast magic spells.

You don't have to visit The Wizarding World of Harry Potter to procure a wand and wield its powers. You can actually purchase an interactive wand (pricing starts at around $60) ahead of time and you'll be ready to cast your first spell as soon as you enter the Wizarding World.

The Universal Studios Store at CityWalk (near the entrance to Universal Studios Florida) has an entire section devoted to all things "Harry Potter," including a large selection of interactive wands. Included with your wand, you'll find a map that directs you to the various wand spots.

Of course, if you want the true-to-the-books experience of visiting Ollivanders Wand Shop where one lucky guest is picked to have the wizard in residence facilitate the process of "the wand choosing the wizard," you can still do that, as well. Even if you are lucky enough to be chosen, purchasing the wand that chooses you is optional.

Attend a lively luau

universal studios orlando visit

Some of Universal Orlando's on-site hotels are so well themed that you almost feel as if you've been transported to a far-off paradise. This is especially true of Loews Royal Pacific Resort , one of Universal's Premier-category hotels.

The hotel's design, decor, dining and activities are modeled after a South Seas oasis with lush, tropical gardens; a beachy, lagoon-style pool; island-inspired food; and traditional Hawaiian entertainment.

Once a week, the hotel hosts the Wantilan Luau , a dinner show with all-you-can-eat food (including a pit-roasted pig), live Polynesian music and hula and fire dancing demonstrations that celebrate this centuries-old custom. By the end of the evening, you'll wonder if you are still in Orlando or if you've traveled across the country to the Aloha State. You may even get to test out your own hula skills.

Shows are held every Saturday night and you do not need to be a guest of the hotel to attend. Ticket prices start at around $109 per adult and $59 for children (plus taxes and fees). Children under age 3 are free.

Listen to live music

universal studios orlando visit

There are a surprising number of spots where you can listen to live music at Universal ... and one where you can get on stage and be the star of the show.

The Hard Rock Cafe at CityWalk often hosts big-name musical and comedy acts. Ticket prices vary based on the show and your seat choice, but start at around $40 per person. If you are looking for a free option (well, minus the cost of food and cocktails), head for the Velvet Bar at the Hard Rock Hotel or Pat O'Brien's dueling piano bar at CityWalk.

If you'd rather take center stage than let another performer take all the glory, stop at CityWalk's Rising Star karaoke bar. Karaoke bar is a bit of a misnomer, though, when it comes to Rising Star. If your name is chosen and you get the chance to step onto the brightly lit stage, your performance will be accompanied by a live band and backup singers while a crowd of fans cheers you on.

Spend your 'spare' time at the bowling alley

universal studios orlando visit

Universal's Cabana Bay Beach Resort has a distinct retro style that recalls the classic Florida beach resorts of yesteryear. You can sip a shake at the malt shop, sleep in a room with colorful, nostalgic decor (complete with bars of Zest soap in the bathroom) and partake in one of America's favorite pastimes — bowling.

Galaxy Bowl , located on the second floor of Cabana Bay's main building, is a 10-lane bowling alley with neon lights and vintage vibes. The adjacent Galaxy Bowl Restaurant serves burgers, pizzas and more and there is also a full bar. Each lane has a table and booths where you can dine.

Galaxy Bowl is open daily from 3 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. Call or stop by the bowling alley to reserve a lane.

Bottom line

Universal Orlando is known for its thrilling, movie-based attractions and exciting events like Halloween Horror Nights and the Holidays at Universal Orlando , but now you know that you don't even have to walk under Universal's iconic archway to experience all the fun the resort has to offer.

Next time you plan to visit Universal, be sure to leave time in your day (or night) to experience all of the outside-the-park excitement.

Universal Orlando Crowd Calendar: Understand Orlando Crowds with Our Crowd Calendar

Rating System for the Universal Orlando Crowd Calendar

Our Universal Studios Crowd Calendar rating system is based on historical data that we track, the opening of a new park/ride opening, seasonal events/festivals, holidays and school vacation dates, and other relevant factors that influence theme park crowds and how busy they are on a day to day basis.

Please be aware that our predictions for crowd levels are not to be “taken as gospel.” We do our best to provide you with the most accurate and up-to-date crowd predictions so that you know how busy the theme park will be and plan accordingly or be more informed when you select your dates for your Universal Studios in Orlando visits.

Here’s how our crowd rating system works for Universal Studios and other theme parks:

1 – GREEN = Light Crowds (minimal lines) 2 – BLUE = Below Average Crowds 3 – YELLOW = Average Crowds 4 – ORANGE= Above Average Crowds 5 – RED = Heavy Crowds (long lines)

Each day on the crowd calendar is highlighted with one of those colors to help you determine what the crowd size might be on that day at Universal’s theme parks.

Health and Safety Guidelines for Visiting Universal Orlando Resort:

  • Face coverings are optional for fully vaccinated guests visiting the theme park. For guests who have not been vaccinated, face coverings are encouraged while indoors at Universal Studios in Orlando – including Universal’s restaurants, shops, and indoor hotel public areas.
  • Universal Studios does not require proof of vaccination
  • The resort maintains the highest sanitation and cleanliness standards
  • Check with your Universal Travel Agent for Universal’s latest guidelines

We trust the Travel Agents at  The Vacationeer for all of our Universal Orlando and Disney travel planning needs.

We hope you’ll consider working with them too, what is a theme park crowd calendar.

A crowd calendar is a tool to track and predict how busy a theme park will be on a specific month, week, and day of the year.

By using current trends and data compiled from recent years, a crowd calendar determines which days the parks will have shorter lines and which days will have longer lines. This information can be used to give you an idea of the crowd levels at the theme parks on the dates you are considering. A crowd calendar for Universal Studios in Orlando and Islands of Adventure is the perfect way to track crowds and plan the day you visit the theme parks accordingly.

Why Use a Crowd Calendar to Understand Crowd Levels at Universal Orlando Resort?

The crowd sizes at Universal Studios Florida often align to the crowd sizes at Universal’s Islands of Adventure (and vice-versa), but this is not always the case. Some days one park will have fewer or more guests than the other Orlando park and the next day could be totally different.

Even though you may not have the flexibility to plan your Orlando trip around the least-crowded dates, this information about crowd levels can still be helpful for your Universal Studios trip. It’s always good to know what to expect so you can plan accordingly and get the most out of your Universal Studios in Orlando vacation.

For those concerned about potential exposure to COVID-19, this crowd information can also help you choose dates to visit Universal Studios with lower attendance levels in order to reduce your exposure to other guests.

Choose a low crowd time to visit Orlando to limit your exposure to other guests. Lower crowds also mean shorter wait times for the theme park’s attractions.

A Universal Studios Crowd calendar can also help you determine if early park admission or purchasing the Universal Express Pass is worth it. If the crowds are expected to be heavy then this add-on will likely make a big difference in your Orlando theme parks experience.

Questions about adding Express Pass to your trip?

Universal Teases the Next Epic Universe Announcement

G et ready, because Universal Orlando Resort is teasing their next big Epic Universe announcement. The new theme park will open sometime next year and more details will be revealed soon.

Epic Universe Announcement Teaser

In a short video shared to their social media channels, Universal Orlando Resort is seemingly hinting at a new Epic Universe announcement that will drop on March 28. In the video, the date 3. 28. 24 can be seen hovering over a blue galactic background. You can watch the video below:

It makes sense that a new Epic Universe announcement is on the way, as it appears that they’re breaking up their announcements by land. The first big Epic Universe announcement shared an overview of the park map — including the official reveal of the five lands: Celestial Park, Super Nintendo World, Dark Universe, the Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Ministry of Magic, and How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk — and a more in depth look at the first land, Celestial Park . We expect this new announcement could give us specific details about at least one more of the lands.

Also worth noting is that Universal is currently working on an Epic Universe Preview Center , due to open at Universal Orlando CityWalk later this year, mostly likely by the summer. Inside, guests will get an interactive look at what they can expect from Epic Universe. It is likely that Universal will want the details of the lands of Epic Universe out to the public before the Epic Universe Preview Center opens.

What do you think this Epic Universe announcement will be? Let us know your predictions in the comments below and stay tuned for more.

You can visit Disney World, Universal for under $100 a day: The deal with summer tickets

universal studios orlando visit

Central Florida can swelter in the summer, with high temperatures and what feels like even higher humidity. But it’s still a popular time to visit the region’s theme parks .

This year, those who brave the heat can be rewarded with ticket deals at destinations like Walt Disney World, Universal Orlando Resort and LEGOLAND Florida, all starting at under $100 a day. SeaWorld Orlando tickets drop as low as $60 on select dates.

Here’s what travelers planning summer theme park vacations should know.

How much is a ticket to Disney World?

Disney World tickets vary by date and park. For one-day, one-park admission for guests ages 10 and up, starting prices range from $109 at Disney's Animal Kingdom to $124 at Magic Kingdom.

However, the resort is offering two ticket deals for spring and summer.

  • The 4-Day, 4-Park Magic Ticket costs $396, which works out to $99 a day. It includes one day at each of Disney World’s four theme parks, without park-hopping or repeating parks. Visits must start between April 2 and Sept. 22 and end within seven days of the start date.
  • The 3-Day, 3-Park Magic Ticket costs $267, which works out to $89 a day. It includes one day each at EPCOT, Disney’s Hollywood Studios and Disney’s Animal Kingdom, without park-hopping or repeating parks. Admission to Magic Kingdom is not included. Visits must start between April 2 and Sept. 24 and end within five days of the start date.

Your next Disney trip could cost more, depending on when and where you visit

How much does it cost to get into Orlando’s Universal Studios?

One-day, one-park admission to either Universal Studios Florida or Universal Islands of Adventure starts at $119 for guests ages 10 and up.

Universal Orlando Resort is offering a 2-Park Play 4 Days Promotional Ticket starting at $306.99, however, which works out to just under $77 a day. Guests can visit both parks each day. Visits don’t have to be consecutive, but they must all fall within seven days of the start date. The deal is available through the mid-December on the resort’s website.

How can I save money at SeaWorld Orlando?

Non-discounted SeaWorld Orlando tickets cost $139.99, according to the park’s website, which offers various deals throughout the year.

The biggest deal of the year is available through March 24. It's a $60 throwback ticket in honor of SeaWorld’s 60th anniversary, which is March 21.

SeaWorld Orlando, San Antonio and San Diego are offering the specially priced tickets for select dates throughout the year for guests older than 2. Quantities are limited.

Who gets in free at LEGOLAND Florida?

Admission is free for guests under the age of 2 at LEGOLAND Florida .

After that, one-day theme park tickets start at $74 online or $119 at the front gate, according to the resort’s website. Admission to neighboring LEGOLAND Water Park or Peppa Pig Theme Park costs extra. There’s also a convenience fee for online purchases.

Travelers with the flexibility to visit by June 14 can get specially priced $29 kids tickets with the purchase of a full-priced multi-park ticket starting at $94. Up to four kids’ tickets, for children ages 2 to 12, can be purchased in one transaction.

Travelers should note LEGOLAND Florida is in Winter Haven, about 50 miles from Orlando.

Is Busch Gardens the most expensive?

No, Busch Gardens Tampa Bay is not the most expensive theme park in Central Florida. Its website lists non-discounted tickets at $139.99, tying in price with sister park SeaWorld Orlando. Also, like SeaWorld, Busch Gardens’ website regularly offers discounts.

Its Spring Break Sale slashes the starting price to $99.99 for guests age 3 and up. The sale runs through March 24. Invariably, another deal will become available after this one expires.

Busch Gardens Tampa Bay is more than 80 miles from Orlando, but the park operates a free shuttle to and from Orlando for ticketed guests.

Universal Opens Brand-New ‘Harry Potter’ Location Early, Now Open to All Guests

in Universal Studios Hollywood

Hogsmeade, The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios Hollywood, welcoming Death Eaters, a fan-favorite extended offering

Surprise, Potterheads – Universal Studios Hollywood just debuted a brand-new location at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter.

There are multiple versions of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter around the globe, and each one is a tiny bit different. Universal Studios Hollywood’s version is one of the smallest, but has still found room to debut a brand-new addition this week.

Earlier this month, the Southern California theme park announced plans to take inspiration from Universal Orlando Resort and add its own version of Florean Fortescue’s Ice Cream, an eatery frequently mentioned in the Harry Potter books.

Originally planned to open on March 29, Universal Studios Hollywood revealed yesterday (March 26) that it’s now officially open to all guests several days early – meaning anyone at the park can now drop by to enjoy some soft-serve ice cream inspired by the wizarding world!

Florean Fortescue’s Ice-Cream counter, featuring ten soft-serve ice cream flavors, is in soft opening inside Honeydukes in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. During this time, soft-serve ice cream may be periodically unavailable and will grand open on 3/29/24.

As this is technically just a soft opening, Universal warns that there may be times when the ice cream parlor is unavailable. it still plans to hold a grand opening on March 29, from which point Florean Fortescue’s will be open according to a more reliable schedule.

Unlike the version of Florean Fortescue’s at Islands of Adventure, this isn’t a standalone ice cream parlor. Instead, it is a counter located inside Universal Studios Hollywood’s Honeydukes candy store. Flavors sold at the ice cream parlor include Butterbeer , vanilla, banana, chocolate, orange, mint, Granny Smith apple, toffee nut, toffee apple, and pistachio. Every flavor can be served in a cup or waffle cone.

A whimsical candy shop, "Honeydukes," with a snow-capped roof, nestled in a magical village, evoking the enchanting world of Harry Potter.

Both Universal Studios Hollywood and Universal Orlando Resort are currently in the middle of a “Butterbeer Season” celebration , which means guests can also enjoy limited-edition Butterbeer-flavored treats around the Wizarding World.

This is just the latest in a long line of new  Harry Potter -inspired additions hitting Universal property. In 2025, Universal Orlando Resort will debut its third Wizarding World area at its brand-new theme park, Epic Universe. This time around, the land will be inspired by the Ministry of Magic.

A cheerful ice cream shop attendant in a vintage-style uniform hands over a delicious scoop of ice cream to a customer, as another customer looks on, set against the colorful interior of Florean Fortescue Ice Cream Parlour at Universal Orlando Resort.

While images shared from the park during construction show exteriors inspired by the 1920s French Ministry of Magic as seen in the Fantastic Beasts franchise, the land’s ride will apparently take place in the British Ministry of Magic frequented by Harry, Ron, and Hermione in the original Harry Potter movies. Universal is yet to confirm what this will entail, but rumor has it that the antagonist of the ride will be none other than Dolores Umbridge (Imelda Staunton), Harry’s despised Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher and lackey to Minister for Magic Cornelius Fudge.
