Traversing the world by cruise ship is an exciting way to visit foreign shores, and you don’t want to miss a single opportunity to explore new locations. An ever-increasing number of cruise ships cross the North Atlantic Ocean to visit Iceland from May-September. These are magical months to come to Iceland since visitors get to experience the midnight sun, which lights the night sky.

Reykjavik in the summer is a great cruise ship destination.

Read this article to find out about the best value tours departing from Iceland’s biggest ports. These tours are tailor-made for cruise ship passengers so you needn’t worry about timing, the tour guides will have you back on deck in good time for your ongoing voyage.

Shore Excursions from Reykjavik

Harpa sits on the shore of Reykjavik.

Reykjavík is Iceland’s capital city, so it naturally has the biggest ports and most opportunities for exploration. Walking around the city is an adventure in itself but if you want to be closer to Iceland’s gorgeous nature we recommend these day tours which take you out of the city.

Golden Circle Tour

Strokkur Hot Spring is a highlight of the Golden Circle.

This day tour will bring you around Iceland’s best-known sight-seeing route, The Golden Circle . It is perfect for those docking in one of Reykjavík’s harbours and want a taste of nature and history, all in one action-packed day.

You will visit Þingvellir , the National Park which has a diverse history. From being the site of Iceland’s parliament for centuries to being a shooting location for the Game of Thrones television series. Þingvellir has a fascinating past and copious amounts of natural beauty.

Gullfoss waterfall can easily be reached by cruise ship passengers.

The original geyser, Geysir Hot Spring , is another star attraction on the Golden Circle. Geysir and surrounding hot springs, along with the third Golden Circle stop Gullfoss Waterfall , which is a show-stopping force of nature, are sure to make your stopover in Iceland really special.

After all that you will return in time to board your cruise ship and continue your journey.

Among the amazing sights you’ll see are Skógafoss Waterfall and Seljalandsfoss Waterfall . The two sight-seeing favourites really show the diversity of waterfalls. Seljalandsfoss falls in front of a cavern which makes it possible for visitors to walk around the waterfall for a real 360° experience.

Reynisfjara black sand beach in the evening sun.

Reynisfjara black sand beach is a hauntingly gorgeous location you will be stopping at. If the darkness of the black sand isn’t enough to impress, the sea stacks which sit along the shoreline are sure to have you reaching for your camera.

There is one more stop before you can reward yourself with a beer, and it’s a spooky one. Shore Excursion from Isafjordur

Isafjordur Fjord in the evening sun is a beautiful place to visit.

The destination is a gorgeous waterfall but the journey there will bring you past equally impressive views so keep your eyes peeled out the window.

Dynjandi Waterfall is named after the loud rumble of the plummeting water, its name translates to ‘thundering’ and that’s what it sounds like. There is a possibility to hike up to the top and get a bird's eye view of this impressive aquatic feature.

On your way back to the cruise ship you will stop at Hrafnseyri, an old town which will give you an idea of what living in Iceland during the settlement era was like. After that, you will once again sail away.

Cruise Excursion | Dynjandi Waterfall & Westfjords from Isafjordur Port

Westfjords Super Jeep Tour

Another excellent choice for a stop in Ísafjörður is this Svalvogar Circle Tour . The Westfjords region has some of the most unique and beautiful sights in all of Iceland and your local guide will drive you to the best spots to see and photograph the natural beauty.

From the comfort of a Super Jeep you'll marvel at mountain ranges as you drive along the coastline, weaving in and out of fjords. Among the spectacular sights you'll see is Kaldbakur , the region's tallest mountain. This tour is not specially made for cruise ship passengers, so make sure to double-check that you have enought time to return on board.

Svalvogur Circle | Westfjords Sightseeing Tour

Lake Lagarfljót is best known for being the home of a mythical creature known as the Lagarfljót Wyrm , a giant serpent which has reportedly been sighted in the lake. Blue Lagoon

Don’t miss the iconic Blue Lagoon during your cruise to Reykjavik, Iceland, which is one of the area’s biggest attractions for visitors. The lagoon is powered by lava-heated seawater and is rumored to have a variety of healing properties. Book your trip early if you’re visiting during peak season so you can enjoy a dip in the mineral-rich waters.

Vatnajokull Ice Caves

Ice cave diving and glacier hiking are the perfect bucket list item for adrenaline seekers visiting on a Reykjavik cruise. Don’t miss the chance to scale Vatnajokull, the largest glacier in all of Europe. It’s something you’ll never forget.

If you’re not familiar with Iceland’s rich history, a visit to the National Museum of Iceland will help you understand the importance of respecting the natural landscape, preserving the glaciers, and the mythology of how the city came to be. An audio tour is particularly insightful.

Tour the Largest Church in Iceland

Construction on the mountainesque Hallgrimskirkja began way back in 1945 and took nearly 50 years to complete. This local monument is a testament to how the people of Iceland build their landmarks in honor and respect of their natural surroundings. Take a guided tour to find out how this Lutheran church came into existence.

You’ve probably never seen anything quite like the Sun Voyager, a futuristic and modernist sculpture inspired by the Vikings located in the heart of Reykjavik. With the city on one side and the sea and mountains on the other, snapping a panoramic photo here is a must.

Matur og Drykkur translates to “food and drink” in Icelandic, and here you’ll find traditional Icelandic dishes in abundance. The restaurant is housed in a restored salt fishery and is open Wednesday through Sunday. Reservations are recommended.

Fish Company

Don’t let the unassuming name of Fish Company fool you—Reykavik knows how to do upscale dining. If you’ve got an adventurous palate, try the three-course menu, or stick with the a-la-carte options of local fried cod dishes, stews, and more.

This Reykjavik farmer’s market is an area institution where many residents purchase their local yogurts, fish, meats, and vegetables for the week. There’s even an olive oil bar and a kombucha bar at this trendy market.

Culture & History of Reykjavik Cruise Port

Though people have lived in Iceland since at least 874 AD, the city wasn’t officially created until the late 18th century. After World War II, Iceland’s population and trading importance boomed. Today, Reykjavik is the capital city of Iceland and the largest city in the country. In recent years, Reykjavik has become a symbol of Icelandic tourism thanks to its beautiful systems of fjords, stunning auroras, and cosmopolitan energy.

Reykjavik Port Facilities & Location

There’s not a lot to do around the Reykjavik cruise port, but there are information desks, rental services, and some duty-free souvenir shopping available to you when you arrive. Most people will either walk to the city center or take a complimentary cruise line shuttle bus.

Transportation in Reykjavik

When you arrive on your cruise to Reykjavik, Iceland, you’ll be just a 15-minute walk from major city sights. Hop-on, hop-off bus services are plentiful, as are taxi services. If you decide to use the local bus system, exact change is required, so carrying a few extra kronur is recommended.

Shopping Near the Reykjavik Cruise Port

Get your duty-free shopping fix at the cruise terminal, then head into town for authentic Icelandic artisan goods like locally made wool sweaters and knit hats that are typical of the region. Dressing warmly is an art in Iceland, and you can learn how when you chat with the local salespeople.

Local Currency & Tipping Customs

When traveling in Iceland on a Reykjavik cruise, you’ll use the króna, which is the official currency of Iceland. Many establishments accept euros too, and most places accept credit and debit cards. Cash isn’t king in Iceland, and leaving a tip isn’t required at most restaurants, either.

Celebrity Cruise Excursion

We did 2 Excursions operated by Iceland Travel and both were a let down. We have travelled all over the world and experienced very good to not so good tours, these had to be the worse! My bucket list has always been to visit Iceland and I was really looking forward to this and we spent a lot of money making sure I could do the things I wanted as I’m a full time wheelchair user. Both the guides seemed bored and didn’t know their left to right, there was no enthusiasm at all, it was like they were either bored of didn’t want to be there. Unfortunately the culture of Iceland has seemed to have died and been replaced by big same looking concrete structures, we didn’t learn any history just about how they are building new places oh and how they won the Cold War, apparently. I needed to go to the toilet on a 4 hour tour but they wouldn’t let me use the one on the coach because they don’t open them for short trips, sorry but 4 hours is long for me so I ended up nearly having an accident which would have been extremely embarrassing! No-one seemed friendly we were made to feel unwelcome and got the feeling they didn’t like the English much. It was a complete waste of money and it’s put me off visiting Reykjavik again which is a shame. As we are on a cruise I would be advising they seek another company to use many also thought they were very poor. Our next stop is in Akureyri where we have another tour booked we have our fingers crossed it’s not the same company!! Also the 2nd tour we went on the coach itself seemed unsafe! It kept stalling and rolling backwards down hills where it should be holding on the automatic gearbox and the ride was very juddery and jerky, plus the steps were very high which caused a lot of people with mobility problems difficulties getting on and off, I had to crawl and drag myself up which was quite humiliating really

Hi there, Thank you for your review, we appreciate the feedback. We are very sorry to hear this, could you please contact us at [email protected] so that we can take a closer look at this matter? Your feedback is valuable for us to improve processes to ensure this will not happen again. I do hope you enjoyed your time in Iceland overall. Kind Regards, Oddný

I used Iceland Travel because I did not have time to research what to do. This approach was perfect because I knew we would get around the island in the time allotted and we were able to plan out a day or two at a time using the tablet at night in the hotel room. We did have issues with Hertz on the front end. Not with the reservation but the counter was just overloaded. We waited 2.5 hours. Someone from Iceland Travel reached out to them. It did not speed up the process but we did get an upgraded car. The tablet was great and there was a tremendous amount of places to visit to choose from. I do wish there was a narrated version which would tell you more about what you were seeing. Also, the last day the sites wouldn’t open in Google maps. We could follow our location in a section called trip overview so we were never at risk of being lost. Just make sure you are familiar with your day’s plan in case that happens. We chose the comfort option and were very pleased with the hotels. Someone we met specifically asked whether the bathrooms were ok. No bath tubs and they were very small but they were clean and adequate. Some of the hotels had hot tubs or geothermal pools. We never had an issue. We had to contact them a couple of times and they were always very, very responsive. Definitely recommended way to go.

Dear Candice Thank you for taking your time to write us this fantastic review. I am thrilled to hear how much our tablet added to your experience, we are constantly striving to improve our app and it is always great to hear how we can do it! How great to hear that you were satisfied with your accommodations during your stay here in Iceland. If you are ever back in Iceland for another adventure, we look forward hearing from you again! Have a wonderful day, Best Regards from Reykjavík, Oddný, Iceland Travel

We had a lovely 9 day trip around the Ring Road in Iceland. All the hotel bookings and car rentals were perfectly arranged by Iceland Travel and we did not face any problem whatsoever. The tablet containing the travel app was easy to use and highlighted all the major sights around Iceland. The only notable exception was the the Abandoned DC Plane on Sólheimasandur but we were able to locate that via google. We only wish that the tablet would also display the actual GPS coordinates of each sight so that it can be fed into the car GPS which is more convenient to use while driving. Will definitely rate this as one of our best holidays and hope to be back someday in the future.

Dear Mickey Thank you so much for your stunning review of our Ring Road Express road trip, we really appreciate it! I am thrilled to hear how much our app added to your experience. I will also take notes of your points on how we can improve our app, we are constantly striving to improve our services and your comments are very helpful! Have a great weekend, Best Regards from Reykjavík, Oddný, Iceland Travel

We did a Holland America cruise around Iceland. We had a great visit to 4 ports at each of the compass points.

Hello there, Thank you for your feedback on Iceland Travel, we really appreciate it. I am glad to hear that you were able to enjoy your cruise around Iceland, I am sure it was a great experience! Have a nice day, Best Regards from Reykjavík, Oddný, Iceland Travel

We went on this trip last week and it was absolutely awesome. Our guide Erling Elis, was fantastic - by far the best we've ever encountered on our overseas trips. It was exactly what it says on the tin - and we saw loads. The highlight being the boat ride to the face of the glacier and around icebergs. The accommodation was great too - although at the hotel in Vik it was more like student accommodation - in a separate wing to the main hotel with a big, metal sliding door to keep the rabble contained. That aside, the room was clean and comfortable. I Highly recommend this tour - everything ran really smoothly and although Iceland is expensive - we really felt we'd received value for money. We certainly wouldn't have seen and had the explanations if we'd done it ourselves.

Dear Ken B, Thank you so much for your great review! I'm thrilled to hear how much you enjoyed our Volcanoes & Glaciers tour and that you found the tour of good value. Again, thank you for your review and thank you for sharing your experience on our tour. Best Regards from Reykjavík, Oddný, Iceland Travel

My Iceland Complete tour was absolutely brilliant. I was predominantly there for the photographic aspect and I wasn't disappointed. Not only were the photographic opportunities abundant, but there was ample time at each place we visited for photo taking. Our driver, Tony, was excellent, getting us around safely. He was a stickler for ensuring our safety by making sure our seatbelts were always fastened. He was always so helpful with our luggage as well. Our guide, Júlía, was amazing. She was so keen on making sure we had a good time and went way beyond what was expected of a guide to sort out some problems that arose before and during the trip with some of the guests (problems which had no connection with the tour itself.) She was always entertaining. As a photographer, I was so pleased that she only talked about what we were going to see on the bus and then let us have maximum time at each photographic stop. The hotels were very good and the breakfasts and meals provided were great. The coach was comfortable. The inclusions were nice and varied. The optional activities were interesting. I opted for the duckboat ride on Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon, the Vatnajokull glacier snowmobile ride and the Whale Watching cruise on the fjord. Others opted for the ride on Icelandic horses through the lava fields or to bathe in the thermal spring at Myvatn. I would happily recommend this tour to anybody. PS I have included just some of my photos from the tour to give you an idea of what you will see

Dear Roddlez Thank you for your fantastic review of our Iceland Complete tour. It's wonderful to hear how much you enjoyed your time in Iceland with us and that you were able to take some great photos! It's also great to hear how brilliant the guide and driver were, we are proud to work with such knowledgeable and friendly people and I will pass the compliments on to them. Again, thank you for taking the time to write a review, we appreciate it. Best regards from Reykjavik, Oddný, Iceland Travel

Iceland Cruise Highlights

Soak in natural hot springs.

Rest, relax, and enjoy the healing properties of Iceland’s famous hot springs. In fact,  the name “Reykjavik” translates to “smoky bay” because of the plumes erupting from local springs. There are springs of all sizes, from Kvika Footbath, a tiny pool near the Grótta Lighthouse perfect for dipping your feet in, to the Blue Lagoon, Iceland’s largest and most well-known natural spring. Restorative, mineral-filled waters and sweeping mountain views transport you to what feels like another world entirely.

Admire the Beautiful Fjords

Iceland is renowned for its breathtaking fjords. Hvalfjörður is a popular fjord just a short drive from Reykjavik, which opens up to black-sand beaches, incredible hikes, and roaring waterfalls.  Explore the uninhabited islands along Borgarfjordur, or visit Siglufjordur, a tiny, colorful fishing village nestled alongside its namesake fjord.

Immerse Yourself in Viking History

Head to the National Museum of Iceland in Reykjavik and discover the secrets of Viking settlement on the island of Iceland. Pose with the Sun Voyager, a futuristic sculpture contemplating the significance of the Vikings on Icelandic history. At the Akureyri Museum, you can explore local history from the Viking era all the way up to modern settlement. Before taking in the geological wonders of Lake Myvatn, head to the visitor center to understand the storied lore and myths surrounding Akureyri.

Featured Iceland Cruise Ports

Reykjavik, iceland.

Reykjavik has become a hotspot for international travelers thanks to the magnificent Blue Lagoon and the towering Gullfoss waterfall. Reykjavik is also one of the few places in the world where you can hike up a glacier or check ice cave diving off your bucket list. Along with its incredible natural wonders, the capital city is a cultural hub filled with innovative museums, striking architecture, and fine dining.

Akureyri, Iceland

Akureyri has no shortage of fascinating attractions, like Dimmuborgir, which might be the only way you’ll ever see a lava field up close. Visit Godafoss to marvel at the magnitude of the 40-foot tall waterfall, whose name means “waterfall of the gods.” If you prefer to take it easy, experience an authentic Icelandic mud bath at Lake Myvatn, which is said to have restorative properties for both body and soul.

10 Best Greece Cruises, According to Travel Experts

These are the best Greece cruises for island hopping with ease.

celebrity cruise excursions iceland

Courtesy of Variety Cruises

With its stunning beaches, rich history, iconic landmarks, and delectable cuisine, a trip to Greece is always a great idea. However, since the nation is home to more than 6,000 islands — some of which are only accessible by boat — your best bet is to explore via cruise. Just take it from Rob Clabbers, Travel + Leisure A-List travel advisor and Q Cruise + Travel founder, who tells T+L that “Greece and the Greek isles are just the perfect destinations to explore by ship” since “a cruise allows you to see more islands and gives you a unique vantage point.” Several of the best Greece cruises also include visits to neighboring countries like Turkey and Italy, for example, which allow travelers to experience several cultures and countries in one action-packed trip. Intrigued? We don’t blame you: Ahead, check out our favorite Greece cruises for every type of traveler, along with itinerary recommendations and expert insight.

Meet the Expert

Rob Clabbers is a T+L A-List travel advisor and founder of Q Cruise + Travel, a Chicago-based travel agency.

Mary Curry is a T+L A-list travel advisor and small ship specialist.

Kari Dillon is the owner of Marvelous Mouse Travels, an agency specializing in theme park and cruise vacations.

Megan Guinnup is a travel agent with Marvelous Mouse Travels.

Windstar Cruises

Courtesy of Windstar

According to Clabbers, this small luxury cruise line is perfect for those who prefer “a smaller, more casual yacht-style experience.” Per the pro, the onboard vibes are best described as “upscale, but not stuffy or over-the-top.” It’s also worth noting that “each ship offers a water sports platform with kayaks, water trampolines, stand-up paddling, snorkel gear, floating carpets, and other ‘toys’ that are deployed (weather and location permitting, of course) at least once on most Greek itineraries.”

Itinerary: While you can’t go wrong with any of Windstar’s Greece itineraries, Clabbers is quick to call out the popular Treasures of the Greek Isles voyage, which sets sail each week from May through October. Passengers can visit beloved ports of call like Mykonos and Santorini, along with “lesser-known (and less-crowded!) places like Monemvasia and Patmos.” As part of the experience, guests have the unique opportunity to feast among the ruins in neighboring Turkey as part of the line’s complimentary Evening in Ephesus “after-hours” event, which, per Clabbers, features a decadent five-course dinner accompanied by a chamber orchestra. Speaking of culinary offerings, it’s worth mentioning that Windstar is the official cruise line partner of the esteemed James Beard Foundation, which means you can expect some of the top eats at sea.

Explora Journeys

Courtesy of Explora Cruises

“A new entrant in the luxury travel industry, Explora Journeys offers all the style and comfort of a modern European luxury resort property on its 922-guest yacht-inspired Explora I and, launching later this year, Explora II, ” explains Clabbers. The line has taken the industry by storm, doing away with cliche cruise staples like main dining rooms, large buffets, and notoriously small staterooms. Instead, says Clabbers, guests can choose from a selection of “excellent restaurants that other companies would call specialty restaurants,” as well as “four swimming pools, each with their own vibe,” and all-suite accommodations, some of which boast private plunge pools. Per the pro, it’s worth noting that “Explora Journeys is the first luxury line that offers a dedicated youth activity program and facility year-round;” as such, it’s an excellent option for multi-generational families looking to cruise Greece in style.

Itinerary: Sailing round-trip from Athens, the aptly named eight-night A Journey from Athens to Athens itinerary includes a mix of popular ports like Mykonos and Santorini, along with hidden-gem locales like Syros, which is famous for its neoclassical architecture, a buzzy main town, and (essentially) crowd-free beaches. The cruise also visits the serene resort town of Marmaris in Turkey before heading to its final port of call, Kos , a gorgeous Greek island known for its sandy beaches, white-washed buildings, and historical sites.

Celebrity Cruises

Courtesy of Celebrity Cruises

According to Clabbers, " Celebrity Cruises was launched by a Greek shipping family," so the line has deep ties to — and many officers who hail from — the country. What’s more, he says, "When you visit Greece, they are taking you to their homeland, and it shows in their passion and love of the Hellenic nation." The line offers a range of larger ships and, thus, more options between accommodations (from economical inside rooms to luxurious suites in The Retreat), itineraries, restaurants, and entertainment; as such, Celebrity is "a great option for adults and families who like more activities on their ship."

Itinerary: The nine-night Best Of Greece itinerary cruises round-trip from Athens on select dates from May to October and takes place aboard the 2,170-passenger Celebrity Infinity , which Clabbers described as one of the line’s “smaller and more seasoned ships.” The first port of call is Santorini, followed by Ephesus in Turkey and Mykonos. “Additionally,” says Clabbers, " Infinity   travels to Volos and Thessaloniki, ports that are not typically visited by large ships.” Kavala, located in the northern part of the country, serves as the final port of call before heading back to Athens. Here, cruisers can enjoy a mix of history, culture, and architecture — plus some seriously stunning landscapes (from lagoons and lakes to wetlands and beaches) along with lush flora and fauna.

Related: What to Know About All 16 Ships in the Celebrity Cruises Fleet

Courtesy of Silversea cruises

Silversea offers a variety of Greece cruise itineraries, and it’s one of few truly luxe all-inclusive cruise lines. Per Clabbers, the 596-passenger Silver Moon offers all-suite accommodations and a classic small-ship feel — complete with excellent meals, beverages, and shore excursions all included in your cruise fare. Speaking of the latter, he says, “The inclusion of shore excursions also makes it easy to dive deeper into Greek culture and culinary experiences.”

Itinerary: While you can’t go wrong with any of Silversea’s Greek itineraries, Clabbers especially recommends the seven-night Athens to Athens cruise, which “calls on highlights, but adds places like Souda Bay in Crete, Nafplion, Patmos, and Rhodes ,” where he recommends visiting the “temple ruins at Lindos, with views over the Mediterranean, and then walk in the footsteps of the Crusaders in the old town.” The cruise also stops in Nafplion, which, despite its romantic seaside setting and lovely beaches, is yet to be uncovered by most American travelers — for now, at least.

Variety Cruises

According to T+L A-list travel advisor and small ship specialist Mary Curry , this local Greek cruise line offers its own fleet of yachts, most carrying fewer than 50 passengers. Since the ships are so small, says Curry, “you can travel a bit further off the beaten path.” Variety offers a handful of Greece itineraries, including specially themed hiking and wine cruises.

Itinerary: Travelers craving a true off-the-beaten-path experience can book the seven-night Unexplored Greece voyage, which sails round-trip from Athens. The first port of call is Ikira, a tiny island known for its hot springs that also happens to be one of the world’s Blue Zones. Then, it’s off to Patmos, known for its fascinating history and unspoiled beaches, before overnighting in Lipsi, a laid-back isle famous for its gorgeous scenery. On board, guests can taste the destination’s famous wine, Aposperitis. The fun continues in Levintha, inhabited by a single family who raises animals and runs a restaurant where guests can enjoy fresh-caught fish. After, it’s off to Amorgos, where scenic hiking and beautiful beaches abound. The next day, you’ll stop at Panagia Hozoviotissa, a cliffside monastery dating back to the 10th century, before heading to Koufonisia, which boasts majestic caves and rock pools accessible only by boat (thankfully, Variety as you covered). The final stop of the day is the serene island of Iraklia, which offers clear-blue waters ideal for swimming. After remaining here overnight, you’ll head to the final port of call, Serifos, where guests can visit a remote beach, followed by an onboard BBQ feast to refuel before heading to Chora, a fairy-tale village.

Courtesy of Ponant Cruises

This French-owned cruise line offers an impressive fleet of small luxury ships. Additionally, says Curry, “Most cabins have private balconies, and travelers who plan early are rewarded with excellent value for the money.” What’s especially unique about Pontant, explains the pro, is that they “partner with Smithsonian Journeys on select departures to offer an enrichment program of included lectures and shore excursions in each port.”

Itinerary: Curry especially recommends the seven-night Cruising the Greek Islands of the Southern Aegean sailing, which will cruise round-trip from Athens in July and October 2025. The cruise calls on aforementioned spots like Patmos, Rhodes, and Amorgos before visiting Adamas in Milos, a volcanic island teeming with postcard-worthy white-washed towns and breathtakingly beautiful beaches. Adamas itself is a tiny fishing port where colorful boats shimmer against the blue waters. Finally, it’s off to Mykonos and Napflion before finally disembarking in Athens.

Disney Cruise Line

Courtesy of Disney Cruise Line

Disney Cruise Line is world-famous for its exciting onboard offerings for children of all ages — including character and superhero meet-and-greets, dining options themed after beloved Disney princesses, and live performances galore — making it a favorite for families hoping for a fun-filled Greece vacation.

Itinerary: "Setting sail aboard the Disney Dream on the seven-night Mediterranean with Greek Isles itinerary is nothing short of magical!" says Megan Guinnup , a travel agent with Marvelous Mouse Travels . Cruising round-trip from Rome, the ship calls on Naples before exploring Greece. In addition to popular ports like Athens and Mykonos, you'll also visit Chania on the island of Crete, which offers a bustling harbor, exquisite architecture, and cobblestone streets that look like they were plucked straight from a (Disney) fairy tale. After exploring each locale, the fun continues back on board, where, per the pro, "there is enchantment everywhere — meeting beloved characters, enjoying deck parties with Mickey and Minnie, and indulging in exquisite cuisine."

Royal Caribbean

Courtesy of Royal Caribbean

This mega-ship line truly has it all: Flashy entertainment and onboard activities — which, depending on the ship, can include everything from water slides to zip lines — and plenty of drinking and dining offerings to appease even the pickiest eaters. Guinnup and Kari Dillon, owner of Marvelous Mouse Travels, recommend setting sail aboard Odyssey of the Seas , which offers several Greek itineraries. "On board," says Guinnup, "There's a plethora of activities to enjoy, from bumper cars and roller skating to exquisite dining and a bionic bar — there's something for everyone!"

Itinerary: The seven-night Greek Isles itinerary sails round-trip from Rome with stops in Santorini, Ephesus, Mykonos, and Naples. Keep in mind that because the ship is so large, Santorini and Mykonos are both tender ports. With that in mind, Dillon recommends springing on The Key, an optional add-on that includes priority tender access so that you can spend as much time as possible on land basking in its beauty.

Virgin Voyages

Courtesy of Virgin Voyages

Richard Branson’s adults-only line has taken the industry by storm with its innovative offerings, including 20-plus restaurants instead of buffets, an onboard tattoo parlor, adult-focused entertainment offerings, and a two-story nightclub.

Itinerary: Dillon especially recommends the seven-night Greek Island Aglow itinerary for travelers seeking a high-energy, adults-only option. She continues, telling T+L, “Not only does this sail to the islands of Santorini and Rhodes, but it [also] has an overnight in Mykonos, which is world-famous for its lively party atmosphere.” As a bonus, the cruise also calls on Bodrum in Turkey, which boasts beautiful beaches, flower-filled cafes, and a bustling nightlife scene.

Celestyal Cruises

Nicolas Economou/NurPhoto via Getty Images

The Greece-based Celesytal Cruises prides itself on offering an authentic Greek vacation experience. Additionally, Celesytal is unique in that it offers year-round Aegean Sea sailings cruising round-trip from Athens and ranging in length from three to 14 nights. On land, Celeystal guests can choose from a selection of the line’s “Authentic Excursions,” which are specially curated, small-group, expert-led experiences designed to take travelers off the beaten path. Options — including walking food tours and pottery-making demos at a local factory — abound, depending on the particular port of call.

Itinerary: The seven-night Idyllic Aegean voyage visits Thessaloniki (which offers an eclectic combination of history, nightlife, and gastronomy), Kuşadası (a popular Turkish resort town), and Heraklion (the capital of Crete) before heading to iconic isles like Santorini and Mykonos, where the ship will remain overnight. Before returning to Athens for disembarkation, you’ll also stop in magnificent Milos.

The southbound voyage (which is the reverse itinerary) on Grand Princess departs May 15, 2024, from Anchorage and also starts at $398 per person. Or, you can sail that southbound itinerary on Sapphire Princess on May 18, 2024, for the same price.

You'll also find additional deals like 50% off deposits, free third and fourth guests (or $99 per additional person, depending on the sailing), and free airfare for a second guest. 7-Day Alaska: Hubbard Glacier & Skagway

Norwegian's sailing from Seward to Vancouver on Norwegian Jewel features two days cruising through Hubbard Glacier, where you'll be able to book the Hubbard Glacier & Wilderness Explorer excursion for an up-close look at North America's largest tidewater glacier. Afterward, the ship calls on Icy Strait Point, Juneau, Skagway and Ketchikan (Ward Cove).

In Ketchikan, reserve a spot for the Alaskan Cultural & Lumberjack Show Experience, which includes an entertaining show, a chance to learn about Alaska Native culture, and a tasting of local food and wines. Alaska also offers some of the best fishing conditions in North America, so anglers may want to consider booking a private excursion to go fishing for halibut or salmon. After several days in port, enjoy one more day of scenic cruising through the Inside Passage before disembarking in Vancouver.

In 2025, the seven-day Hubbard Glacier & Skagway itinerary will sail from Vancouver to Whittier. The lowest fare for this cruise starts at $529 per person aboard the Norwegian Jade on May 5, 2025.

The 13-mile-long Mendenhall Glacier is one of the top attractions in Juneau, and the line offers a variety of excursions to view the impressive ice sheet. For a bucket list adventure, splurge on the helicopter and dog-sledding excursion to Mendenhall Glacier from Skagway. You can also opt for another once-in-a-lifetime trip: a flightseeing tour by floatplane. You'll fly into the wilderness, kayak across a stream and then hike the surface of the Norris Glacier, a remote glacier in the Coast Mountains that's only accessible by plane or on foot.

If you're looking forward to 2025, you can book a similar itinerary from Whittier to Vancouver on April 28, 2025, starting at $499 per person on Norwegian Jade.

Shorter cruises

A shorter cruise may be an attractive option if you don't have extensive vacation time or you prefer to spend a few days ashore before or after your sailing. See our pick of competitively priced four- and five-night Alaska cruises, below.

Princess Cruises: 4-Day Alaska Sampler

This 2025 cruise aboard Discovery Princess includes one port of call, Ketchikan, and two days at sea between Vancouver and Seattle. Guests will also have two sea days to enjoy activities and dining experiences on the ship.

How to find the best Alaska cruise deals

Book during wave season.

As previously mentioned, you can take advantage of some of the best deals of the year during wave season. Promotions offered during wave season include lower cruise fares, reduced deposits and onboard credits. You can also find special rates (or free fares) for the third and fourth guests in the same room, making this the perfect time to book a family cruise.

In addition, look for discounts on higher-level staterooms and suites, or even accommodations in exclusive areas of the ship, such as The Haven on Norwegian Cruise Line or The Retreat on Celebrity Cruises. These private spaces offer swanky extras like luxurious accommodations, all-inclusive pricing , butler service, a team of attendants and concierge service, as well as private restaurants, lounges and pools. With lower pricing, wave season may be the best time to splurge on a cruise vacation in one of these upscale enclaves.

Promotional pricing beyond wave season

If you miss booking your cruise during wave season, don't panic. Many lines offer special pricing and flash sales throughout the year and advertise lower fares for voyages during Alaska's shoulder seasons, which fall in May and September.

"You will always find the more affordable Alaska cruises toward the beginning and end of the season. This year, the Alaska cruise season begins in April and continues through October," says Chris Gray Faust, executive editor of Cruise Critic. She adds, "The challenge with shoulder season Alaska cruises is that the weather might not be the best – it can snow in Alaska in April and early May – and in the fall, the nights will be longer (although, there is a chance you might see northern lights )."

In addition to giving up the warmer summer weather (and possibly having snow), you may also miss some optimal wildlife viewing opportunities if you cruise early or late in the season. For example, the peak time for bear-watching excursions extends from mid-June to mid-August, which falls during the height of the Alaska cruise season in July and August.

If you're looking for other ways to save money on your cruise, Gray Faust advises that older ships also provide more value when you're looking for deals.

It's important to note that a few of this year's wave deals extend just until the end of February 2024, so you'll need to refer to the individual cruise line websites to see the exact dates for the special offers. You may also be able to find lower prices on some discount and aggregator sites, like Cruise Critic, Cruises.com and Priceline.

Top Cruises Designed for Adults

While many all-inclusive – or mostly all-inclusive – boutique and luxury cruise lines are family-friendly, many of the onboard venues and activities are adult-by-design. Since there are few (or no) activities geared toward younger cruisers and no babysitting services, you typically won't find parents with young children on these ships.

Azamara's four upscale boutique ships provide immersive travel experiences geared toward adults. These smaller ships – accommodating a maximum of 702 guests – sail waterways and rivers larger ships can't access, docking in city centers and unique ports of call around the globe.

Many Azamara voyages also offer longer stays and overnights in port not found on many other itineraries, including wine and culture itineraries. Some even feature special events, such as a voyage to the Monaco Grand Prix in May 2023 and 2024, or a 12-night round-trip cruise from Buenos Aires, Argentina , to attend Carnival in Rio de Janeiro . In addition, the line is extending its offerings on Country Intensive voyages in 2023 and 2024 with itineraries in destinations like various European countries, South Africa, Australia and Japan.

On board you'll find a wide selection of casual and formal dining options ranging from Windows Cafe to the main dining room, Discoveries Restaurant. Specialty restaurant offerings include top-notch steak and seafood at Prime C or, if you prefer, Italian fare at Aqualina. First offered on Azamara Onward (the newest ship) before being expanded to the whole fleet, Atlas Bar serves innovative craft cocktails like the London Fog Martini or Tuscan Delight. Discoveries Lounge is another guest favorite for mingling with fellow cruisers at the end of the day. Wine aficionados will enjoy pairing limited-production and rare vintages from the Wine Cellar with dinner in the evenings.

Cruise fares include stateroom accommodations; select spirits, wine and beer; gratuities; and nonalcoholic beverages like bottled water, specialty coffees and tea. You'll also get access to complimentary AzAmazing Celebrations with special evening and daytime events ashore and on the ship. Additional amenities like a complimentary internet package, free specialty dining, butler service and other perks come with suite accommodations.

Find an Azamara cruise on GoToSea.

Scenic Eclipse, touted as "The World's First Discovery Yacht," offers an all-inclusive, ultra-luxurious experience for just 228 guests (with 172 crew). The ship's Polar Class 6 rating enables it to sail to destinations like Antarctica. On these expedition-style voyages, the ship will carry only 200 guests and a total of 192 crew. All suite accommodations include a private veranda or terrace; butler service; state-of-the-art amenities; Egyptian cotton linens; and an in-suite minibar stocked with Champagne, wine and other personally selected beverages. You'll also find indulgences like onboard helicopters for intimate excursions and Scenic Neptune, an underwater submarine.

Guests can enjoy up to 10 dining experiences on the ship, including fine dining at Lumière. This elegant French restaurant seats just 35 guests and features a multicourse degustation menu and a Champagne bar. For a less formal option, check out the Asian, Indian and Middle Eastern specialties – and the intimate teppanyaki grill experience – at Night Market @ Koko's. When it's time for an after-dinner drink, sample one (or several) of 100-plus whiskeys available at Scenic Lounge Bar. Other onboard activities include taking a culinary class at Scenic Épicure, getting an invigorating treatment at Senses Spa, or just relaxing with spectacular sea views and Champagne on deck 10 at the Panorama Bar.

The line's second luxury yacht, Scenic Eclipse II, set sail on its inaugural voyage from Lisbon, Portugal , in mid-April 2023. The new ship is 550 feet in length and nearly identical to its sister ship, Scenic Eclipse. One addition to the vessel is the new Sky Deck. This space boasts 270-degree views, a bar with indoor and outdoor seating, and six private cabanas. What's more, the oval-shaped Sky Deck pool is the perfect place to kick back – and it's the place to be during the sail-away deck party, especially as the sun sets over the ocean.

You'll also find an impressive wine list to accompany your dining experience at the restaurant.

When it's time to relax, The Solarium is a popular adults-only area that's found on the Resort Deck of all Celebrity ships, including Celebrity Beyond and Celebrity Apex . This light-filled pool area encased by a glass dome is the perfect quiet space for reading a book or taking a nap. While there, you can also grab a light breakfast or lunch at the Spa Cafe and Juice Bar – or order your favorite adult beverage while lounging in the hot tub.

Other adult-focused venues to check out on Celebrity Beyond and Apex and are the new elevated bar spaces. The Edge series World Class Bar – a popular spot on other Celebrity ships – features craft cocktails in a beautiful setting. And don't miss the two-story Sunset Bar on Celebrity Beyond, reimagined by interior designer and TV personality Nate Berkus. The aft location of the bar offers almost twice the space as previous iterations – plus beautiful wake views.

Princess Cruises

The Sanctuary, an adults-only retreat (for ages 18 and older), offers cruisers an escape from bustling public spaces on your ship. The relaxing top-deck venue is available on all Princess Cruises ships and features plush lounge chairs, a spa-like setting and Serenity Stewards, who serve light bites, spa cuisine and other refreshments. To fully unwind, consider reserving a private cabana, where you can book an open-air massage. The child-free venue varies from ship to ship. On six ships – Sky Princess , Majestic Princess , Regal Princess , Royal Princess , Enchanted Princess and Discovery Princess – adults can also enjoy an exclusive Retreat pool, cabanas and bar area. On the newer vessels – Discovery Princess, Enchanted Princess and Sky Princess – The Sanctuary also offers an expanded space with more cabanas.

If you're heading off the ship for an excursion to Princess Cays (the cruise line's private island in the Bahamas), plan to chill out for the day in an adults-only Sanctuary Bungalow. Located just minutes from the ocean and beach, the rentals accommodate four people, and the price includes two complimentary float rentals. You can also order a gourmet picnic to enjoy while lounging on shore.

Back on the ship, adults can reserve a spot for the line's new Winemaker Dinners in partnership with Napa Valley's Caymus Vineyards. These special evenings are offered fleetwide, two to three times during each cruise, for just 12 guests in the Crown Grill specialty restaurant. Winemaker Chuck Wagner personally selected the wines from the notable Napa Valley winery to pair with the elevated five-course menu.

Carnival Cruise Line

Located on all of Carnival Cruise Line 's cruise ships , Serenity Adult-Only Retreat is a tranquil oasis hidden away from bustling venues and family-friendly areas. Access to the space is complimentary for passengers 21 and older; while there, guests can enjoy relaxing loungers, daybeds and whirlpools. Take in the warm sun and ocean breeze with a signature sangria in hand, or stop for a healthy meal at Fresh Creations Salad outlet (available on select ships) for an alfresco lunch. Passengers can make the most of some alone time with a quick nap and a good book – or simply kick back and relax before heading back into the high-energy environment elsewhere on the ship.

Disney Cruise Line

Though Disney Cruise Line tends to attract families and younger travelers, it also offers multiple spaces and activities for adults 18 and older. Disney's newest ship, Disney Wish , even boasts several adults-only luxurious venues featuring characters and scenes from "Beauty and the Beast."

For top-notch steaks, contemporary Italian cuisine and panoramic ocean views, make a reservation at the Cogsworth-inspired Palo Steakhouse. If you prefer French-style fare and world-class wines served in an elegant and shimmering setting (think Lumiere), Enchanté by three-Michelin-starred chef Arnaud Lallement is the perfect place for a romantic dinner for two. Before dinner at either venue, enjoy a signature cocktail at The Rose. After dinner, you won't want to miss the galactic libations and ever-changing views of faraway galaxies at the adults-only Star Wars: Hyperspace Lounge bar.

Depending on the ship, adult travelers can also dance the night away in a trendy club, watch live entertainment or a cabaret show, catch a sports game on satellite TV, or relax with an after-dinner cocktail at a bar or lounge. Outdoors, Quiet Cove Pool is a tranquil place to relax on all the ships. For even more pampering, Senses Spa & Salon boasts treatment rooms with ocean views, luxurious spa villas and other amenities. On Castaway Cay, Disney Cruise Line 's private island, adults can head to Serenity Bay – a scenic, adults-only stretch of the beach.

Norwegian Cruise Line

Norwegian Cruise Line has three adults-only outdoor venues for guests 18 and older (though specific spaces vary by ship). The venues feature ocean views, bars, plush seating and other amenities. On Norwegian 's Bliss , Joy , Escape , Getaway and Breakaway ships, the Vibe Beach Club sun deck invites guests to relax in oversized hot tubs and enjoy perks like a full-service bar and chilled towels. Norwegian Encore , one of the line's newest ships, boasts an impressive two-level beach club. On Norwegian Prima and soon-to-launch Norwegian Viva, an elevated beach club experience includes the line's first infinity hot tubs. You can purchase a multiday pass in advance for Vibe Beach Club, and cabana rentals are available for more privacy.

At Norwegian Epic 's Posh Beach Club, complimentary perks include fruit skewers, cold water spritzers and a snack menu. Single- or multiday passes are available to all adult cruisers, while travelers who book a Haven suite can access Posh Beach Club for free. Spice H2O is another adults-only venue on the Norwegian Bliss, Joy, Escape, Getaway, Breakaway, Epic, Star and Spirit vessels; access is complimentary. At night, the space becomes an open-air dance club where you can spend the evening partying under the stars.

Royal Caribbean International

Solarium is Royal Caribbean International 's complimentary, child-free space open to guests 16 and older. Located at the front of every ship in the fleet, this indoor-outdoor oasis (or indoors-only on Quantum Class ships) offers impressive vistas and endless views of the sea. Thanks to a full glass canopy over the interior space, adult passengers can enjoy quiet lounging areas, swimming pools and whirlpool tubs with a view, no matter the weather. On top of that, select ships feature a cascading lagoon for further relaxation. Be sure to grab a tropical cocktail or zero-proof drink at Solarium Bar (or Sunshine Bar, on Quantum ships) to sip poolside while enjoying the ocean vistas.
