Description

"In this interactive adventure, Barbie goes on a cross-country trek with friends and makes big decisions about the future. Which dream will she choose?" [3]

"You're in the driver's seat! Help Barbie learn how to make big decisions as she sets off on a journey from Malibu across the country with friends." [4]

After the events of Barbie: It Takes Two season 2, Malibu and Brooklyn spend the summer in California with Malibu's friends and family. Malibu, Brooklyn and Ken go to the beach together and Malibu expresses how she isn't sure of what she wants to do in the future.

Skipper develops Match Mutts, an app meant to help people adopt rescue dogs. Malibu, Brooklyn, Skipper and Ken are going on a cross-country road trip in the DreamCamper to unite the dogs with their new owners. Before they leave, Rafa calls and says Malibu and Brooklyn have an audition to be backup singers for Jacinda, a famous pop star. The audition is in three days.

Express Route

Brooklyn wants to take an express route to New York so she and Malibu will definitely make the audition. The group can camp at Roswell or keep driving. If they camp, Malibu can either have a bonfire with everyone, or a picnic alone with Ken. During the picnic, Malibu and Ken get scared by a sound. They can run to safety or investigate the sound (the latter causes Malibu and Ken to get abducted by aliens and the viewer goes back to the beach at the beginning.)

If the group keeps driving, they go to New Orleans. Ken wants to see a magic show, while Brooklyn and Skipper want to go dancing. If the girls go dancing while Ken stays with the dogs, they see Jacinda in a club. They can either try to impress Jacinda or play it cool.

The following day, the group can either go to a dog sanctuary or go to Chicago. In Chicago, the group watches a sports game. After going to the sanctuary or sports game, the group goes to the Pennsylvania State Fair. Ken buys tickets for a ferris wheel. Malibu and Brooklyn get a chance to perform. If they perform a long song, it leads to an ending where The Barbies get a record deal and move to London. If they perform a short song, Malibu and Ken get on the ferris wheel after.

On the ferris wheel, Malibu decides whether or not she will be more than friends with Ken. The next day, the group gets stuck in traffic on the way to the audition. Malibu and Brooklyn can run for it or take the subway. If they try to take the subway, they end up getting taken to the audition by aliens instead.

Whichever way the girls get to the audition, the ending changes depending on Malibu's relationship with Ken. If Malibu remain just friends with Ken, then The Barbies get to be in Jacinda's music video as backup singers, and Malibu moves to New York. Malibu and Brooklyn adopt Bella and Ella, and The Barbies wait for their big break. Match Mutts is "on fire" and Ken visits New York a lot. If Malibu and Ken are boyfriend and girlfriend, The Barbies get to be in Jacinda's music video as trees. Malibu moves back to California and adopts Bella and Ella.

Scenic Route

Ken wants to take the scenic route so Skipper can have more time to use Match Mutts, and also so he can spend more time with Malibu. Malibu agrees and tells Rafa that she and Brooklyn aren't going to the audition. For the start of the trip, the group can go straight to Roswell or stop at Dino Park for Ken. At Dino Park, Malibu can choose a toy from a machine, or get her fortune taken.

The following day, the group goes to the Grand Canyon. They use Match Mutts to find a potential owner for one of the sister dogs (Bella and Ella). They accidentally give the wrong dog away. To get the right dog to the new owner, the group can ride burros or hang glide. The new owner changes his mind because he doesn't want to separate the sister dogs. Ken later wants to be alone with Malibu, but she doesn't take the hint. She can either go find Ken and spend time with him, or think about her relationship with him more.

Match Mutts finds potential owners for the sister dogs, and another dog named Truffles. If the group goes to find the owner for the sister dogs, there is an ending where The Barbies get to be in Jacinda's music video as trees. Malibu stays in New York and The Barbies wait for a big record deal offer. Skipper goes back to California to work on her app. If the group goes to find the owner for Truffles, they go to the state fair after.

At the state fair, Ken buys tickets for a ferris wheel. Malibu and Brooklyn get a chance to perform. If they perform a long song, it leads to an ending where The Barbies get a record deal and move to London. If they perform a short song, Malibu and Ken get on the ferris wheel after. Malibu decides whether or not she will be more than friends with Ken. After, Rafa calls and says he knows of an entrepreneur named Rebecca Lee. Rebecca is interested in investing in Match Mutts, so the next day, the group goes to New York to see her.

Just before the meeting with Rebecca, the Match Mutts app crashes. Skipper can restart the app, which leads to an ending where she gets the investment from Rebecca. Malibu moves back to California to help Skipper run her Match Mutts business. Malibu adopts Bella and Ella and Brooklyn's solo career is "on fire."

If Malibu thinks of a plan B for the meeting, she improvises and uses a Jacinda song. The ending changes depending on her relationship with Ken. If Malibu remains friends with Ken, the Jacinda music video shoot goes badly and Malibu moves back to California. She adopts Bella and Ella. If Malibu is in a relationship with Ken during plan B for the Match Mutts meeting, then The Barbies get to be in Jacinda's music video as backup singers. They also join Jacinda on her world tour. Malibu and Ken move to New York, and The Barbies' music career is "on fire".

To Understand ‘Barbie’, You Need To Understand Its Music

Let’s analyse the most crucial tunes of Barbie

Despite the pumping Day-Glo pink beats that make up the Barbie soundtrack – helmed by Mark Ronson – the film’s most important musical moments are not part of that original collection. Though the doll has a 64-year history, Barbie ’s director Greta Gerwig focuses on two huge hits from the late ’80s and ’90s. Was this because they remind her of her own coming-of-age moments? Quite possibly, and for a large part of the audience they make up an easily recognisable cultural reference point too. These songs, which are covered on the deluxe soundtrack , tell us more about the main character (and Ken) than perhaps the entirety of the two-hour, surprisingly existential film. But what are they? Fire up that Walkman, dude, and let’s dig in

Barbie’s anthem: “Closer To Fine” by Indigo Girls

This Barbie has a playlist for every road trip! Well, less a playlist and more a signature song that is played – and sung along to, of course – every time she puts pedal to the metal in her pink Corvette. This is her ride-or-die, hype-em-up, mantra of a song to belt out when she wants to remind herself of who she is: she’s Barbie, and she’s just fine!

Except, when she’s not. Given her intrusive thoughts about dying, her flat foot debacle and some cellulite beginning to peek through her shiny, bronzed limbs: she’s far from fine.

“Closer To Fine”, written by Emily Saliers, one half of the Indigo Girls, at first glance is a joyful, folksy little ditty. But the lyrics reveal that the person singing is confused about their place in the world, searching all around for a sign to point them in the right direction as to who they really are.

It was a feeling that Saliers was also experiencing when she wrote the song just shy of the ‘90s (it was released in 1989). She wrote it on a porch in Vermont, while on holiday with her family, and, as reported by Stereogum : “She had just graduated from college and was ruminating on a world of academia that seems fraught with seemingly sure-footed answers that often fail to be full. Once again, that questioning spirit of hers comes barreling through, as she turns over every rock, from the insight of sages to the council of children, understanding that the most complete answer to anything is never under just one of them.”

On a musical level, there’s something life affirming about the note jumping up an octave in the last syllable of “fi
.ine”, implying that everything’s going to work out just fine in the end. This ties in with the repeated lyrical phrase at the song’s end (along with a “Yeah”): “The less I seek my source for some definitive/the closer I am to fine”, which suggests the truth of what we need to know is hidden deep within ourselves, and we shouldn’t be distracted by outside influences who claim that they know us better.

Would Barbie have received this enlightenment if she hadn’t travelled to the real world, and met people along her path who helped her understand who she was? Possibly, possibly not. But her favourite song was suggesting self-realisation right from the very start.

Ken’s choice cut: Push by Matchbox Twenty

“This song is so good, I want to play my guitar at a woman on the beach with this while staring uncomfortably into her eyes for 4 minutes,” is just one of the many new comments on the YouTube video of this song, which has soared with plays over the weekend, taking it up to 106 million views.

Of all the Kenergy he brings to Barbie Land, it’s Ken’s insistence on performing a song to Barbie on his guitar at the beach, while she watches, presumably in adoration, that’s most laughable. Especially when the chosen song is
 “Push” by Matchbox 20.

With big incel vibes from the start – witness the chorus: “I wanna push you around/ Well, I will, well, I will/ I wanna push you down/ Well, I will, well, I will/ I wanna take you for granted/ Yeah, I wanna take you for granted” – it is the antithesis of what Barbie hopes for on her return to Barbie Land. This is not the song to win them over, Kens, it only serves to make the anti-brainwashing of the other Barbies more urgent.

Ryan Gosling’s incredible earnest cover of this track – it’s the closed-eyes moments that send me – appears to be reinforcing the notion that the Kens want control over the Barbies, so much so that they’re apparently willing to commit physical violence against them, and not just plague their ears.

But this was a fallacy that Matchbox Twenty faced when they released the song back in 1997. Lead singer Rob Thomas told MTV News : “It’s not about beating women, that’s for sure. In fact, in the song I turned around the point of view on it. It was actually about a relationship that I was in and how I was being manipulated. It was all about emotional manipulation and emotional violence.”

His band mate Brian Yale said: “We were kind of surprised when we heard all that stuff. [Our response] was, ‘Wow, really? No, it’s not about that.’ I mean, just meet us. We’re not the manliest of men all the time. I’m a short guy. I don’t think I could kick anyone’s (butt)”. Which has very Allan energy.

barbie ken

So while this song isn’t the misogynist’s anthem some may have taken it for, it speaks volumes for Ken’s behaviour in the film. He feels undervalued, unloved and always like the lesser partner (after all, he’s just Ken). For all the wrong ways Ken then goes about it (of which there are
many) he just wants to be heard and also is on his own journey, like Barbie, to find his own identity outside of their relationship.

For Gerwig, she felt the song from her childhood perfectly aligned with Ken’s troubled state of mind: “It was playing all the time on Quad 106.5 when I was in seventh grade,” she told Entertainment Weekly . “I really loved that song. I listened to it all the time and I was like, ‘I feel it. Something’s in this.’”

She added: “I was like, well, if Barbies loved Indigo Girls ‘Closer to Fine’ which is one of my favourite songs of all time, the Kens might really attach to Matchbox Twenty.” That’s also why they’re likely to become canon for a new 90s-obsessed generation too.

During the picnic, Malibu and Ken get scared by a sound. They can run to safety or investigate the sound (the latter causes Malibu and Ken to get abducted by aliens and the viewer goes back to the beach at the beginning.)

• A poster for Barbie: Epic Road Trip was first seen during the Mattel, Inc. 2022 Virtual Analyst Presentation on February 18, 2022.
  • Trey, Ned and Ted make a cameo in the first scene. They are seen in the background, getting surrounded by seagulls when they try to eat pizza at the beach.
  • If the viewer toasts To Destiny, the map has a photo of Malibu and Brooklyn performing (wearing the dresses Rafa designed for them in Barbie: Big City, Big Dreams). The photo is surrounded by stars. If the viewer toasts To Dreams, the map has a photo of Malibu and Ken holding one of the sister dogs. The photo is surrounded by hearts.
  • When Stacie starts singing "Flip the Script", her outfit is different from what she was wearing earlier in the scene. This is a goof.
  • If the viewer chooses the scenic route, they can visit a theme park named Dino Days. It was previously seen in the Barbie Dreamhouse Adventures episode "Road Trip".

  11. What's the song played on the car radio in the Barbie movie?

Eventually this Barbie tune is replaced by a Ken tune. Both tunes sounded familiar and old rather than new soundtrack songs. The soundtrack listing suggests there is a (new) Tame Impala composition "Journey to the Real World", but the car radio song didn't sound like Tame Impala to me. Any clues on the ID of either song?
