What They’re Say About Us?

Our greatest compliments come from those who have Traveling with us. Don't just take our word for it - check out what our customers say about us

safari kenya tour operator

We, a group of 5 recently retired women and two kids put our trust in the hands of Mr. John, the Safari Director of BTPKS to show us sights of incredible of Kenya, and he did not disappoint us. From receiving us from the airport, arranging our stay in beautiful resorts, to making sure that we were served a few Indian dishes for dinner…he managed our entire travel logistics meticulously.

safari kenya tour operator

The place’s were overwhelming. It felt mesmerising connecting to the nature and people, both, in their truest and purest form. People were extremely affectionate and hospitable

safari kenya tour operator

Knowledgable, fun, smart, kind guides made our Nature Journaling safari with Beyond the Plains Kenya Safaris a terrific experience. They went at our pace (slow enough to do artwork in the field and geek out on science) and kept us safe while having a great time

safari kenya tour operator

The Guides Beyond the Plains Kenya Safaris were amazing! They were beyond knowledgable in animals, animal behaviour, conservation and most importantly passionate about animal safety.

Tips For Kenya Safari

Here are some tips for planning a successful Kenya safari:

Book early: Safaris in Kenya are popular, so it is important to book early, especially if you are traveling during peak season (June-September).

Choose the right time of year: The best time to go on safari in Kenya is during the dry season (June-September), when animals are more concentrated around water sources. However, the weather can be hot and dry during this time. The wet season (October-May) is cooler and more humid, but there is more rain, which can make game viewing more difficult.

Consider your budget: Safaris can be expensive, so it is important to set a budget before you start planning. There are a variety of safari options available to suit all budgets, from budget-friendly camping safaris to luxurious lodge safaris.

Do your research: There are many different safari companies operating in Kenya, so it is important to do your research to find the right company for you. Read online reviews, compare prices and itineraries, and contact companies directly to get a feel for their services and ethos.

Pack the right clothes: Kenya can be a hot and humid country, so it is important to pack comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that is appropriate for the weather. You should also pack a hat, sunscreen, and insect repellent.

Be prepared for anything: Things don’t always go according to plan on safari, so it is important to be prepared for anything. This includes being prepared for bad weather, animals, and other unexpected events.

Respect the wildlife: Kenya is home to some of the most amazing wildlife in the world, so it is important to respect the animals and their habitat. Do not disturb the animals, and follow the instructions of your guide.

Support sustainable tourism: Kenya is a beautiful country with a rich culture, so it is important to support sustainable tourism. Choose a safari company that is committed to responsible tourism practices.

Here are some additional tips for your safari:

  • Bring a camera:  You will want to capture all of the amazing wildlife you see on your safari.
  • Learn about the animals:  The more you know about the animals you are seeing, the more you will appreciate them.
  • Be patient:  It can take time to spot animals, so be patient and keep your eyes peeled.
  • Ask questions:  Your guide is a wealth of knowledge, so don’t be afraid to ask questions.

By following these tips, you can ensure that you have a safe and enjoyable safari in Kenya.

What to Wear on a Kenyan Safari?

When preparing for a safari in Kenya , it’s important to prioritize comfort, functionality, and protection from the elements. Here are some clothing and accessory suggestions for your safari:

  • Stick to neutral colors like khaki, beige, brown, and green to blend in with the natural surroundings. Avoid bright colors that may attract wildlife or insects.
  • Long-sleeved clothing helps protect you from the sun and may also guard against insect bites. Lightweight, breathable fabrics like cotton or moisture-wicking materials are ideal.
  • Consider pants that can be converted into shorts, providing flexibility as temperatures can vary throughout the day.
  • A hat with a wide brim offers shade and helps protect your face and neck from the sun.
  • Sturdy, comfortable shoes are essential, especially if you plan on walking during game drives or nature walks.
  • Protect your eyes from the sun and dust with a good pair of sunglasses.
  • Evenings and early mornings on safari can be cool, so it’s advisable to bring a lightweight jacket or fleece for added warmth.
  • Depending on the season, you might encounter rain. A lightweight, packable rain jacket can come in handy.
  • If your safari includes accommodation with a pool, bring swimwear for relaxation.
  • These can be useful for protecting your face from dust or can be wetted to provide relief from the heat.
  • A good pair of binoculars is essential for spotting wildlife from a distance.
  • Carry a small backpack to keep essentials like water, sunscreen, camera, and binoculars easily accessible during game drives.
  • Protect yourself from the sun and insects with high SPF sunscreen and a reliable insect repellent.
  • Don’t forget to capture the incredible wildlife moments. Ensure you have enough battery power and memory cards.
  • Include essentials like pain relievers, antihistamines, and any prescription medications you may need.

Remember to check the specific weather conditions and the time of year you’ll be visiting Kenya, as this can influence your clothing choices. Always consult with your tour operator for any additional recommendations based on the specific details of your safari.

Best Time For Kenya Safari?

The best time for a safari in Kenya can depend on your specific interests and the type of experience you’re seeking. Kenya experiences two main seasons: the dry season and the wet season. The best time to visit may vary depending on the wildlife you want to see and your tolerance for different weather conditions.

  • This is generally considered the best time for a safari in Kenya. The weather is dry, and wildlife congregates around water sources, making it easier to spot animals. The grass is shorter during this period, providing better visibility. July to September is the peak migration season for wildebeest and zebras in the Maasai Mara, one of Kenya’s most popular safari destinations.
  • This is a relatively dry period between the short rains (October to December) and the long rains (March to May). Wildlife viewing can still be good during this time.
  • While the wet season can offer lush landscapes and fewer tourists, it also brings rain and muddy conditions, making some areas inaccessible. However, this can be a good time for birdwatching, and the scenery is often more vibrant.

Ultimately, the best time for a Kenya safari depends on your preferences and priorities. If you want to witness the Great Migration in the Maasai Mara, the dry season from June to October is ideal. If you prefer fewer crowds and are interested in birdwatching, the wet season may be suitable. It’s essential to research the specific regions you plan to visit and consult with your tour operator for personalized advice based on your travel dates and interests.

Here is a more detailed breakdown of the best times to go on safari in Kenya by region:

Masai Mara: June to October is the best time to visit the Masai Mara, as this is when the Great Migration is taking place. Millions of wildebeest, zebras, and other animals make their way across the Mara River, creating a spectacular sight.

Of course, the best time for your safari will also depend on your personal preferences. If you want to avoid the crowds, you may want to consider visiting during the shoulder seasons (April-May or November-December). However, be aware that the weather may be less predictable during these times.

No matter when you decide to go on safari, be sure to book your trip in advance, especially if you are traveling during peak season. And most importantly, relax, enjoy the experience, and create memories that will last a lifetime.

Kenya Safari Budget

Planning a Kenya safari on a budget is certainly achievable, and there are several ways to make your dream safari experience come true without breaking the bank. Here are some tips for planning a budget-friendly Kenya safari:

1. Consider the time of year: The dry season (June to October) is generally the most popular time to visit Kenya for safaris, but it’s also the most expensive time. If you’re on a tight budget, consider traveling during the shoulder seasons (April-May or November-December) or even during the wet season (March-May). While the weather may be less predictable during these times, you’ll find lower prices and fewer crowds.

2. Choose a camping safari: Camping safaris are the most affordable option for exploring Kenya’s wildlife. They offer basic but comfortable accommodations, typically in tents or shared huts, and often include meals and game drives.

3. Opt for shared group safaris: Shared group safaris are another budget-friendly option, allowing you to share the costs of transportation, accommodation, and guide fees with other travelers. This can significantly reduce the overall cost per person.

4. Consider a self-drive safari: If you have a sense of adventure and a valid driver’s license, consider renting a 4×4 vehicle and embarking on a self-drive safari. This option gives you more flexibility and control over your itinerary, but it also requires more planning and preparation.

5. Choose budget-friendly accommodations: There are plenty of affordable accommodations available in Kenya, ranging from guesthouses and hostels to budget-friendly lodges and camps. Look for options located outside of national parks or in less popular areas to save money.

6. Pack your own food and drinks: Bringing your own snacks, drinks, and non-perishable food items can help you cut down on dining expenses. Utilize local markets and supermarkets to stock up on supplies.

7. Utilize public transportation: Public transportation options like buses and matatus (minivans) can be a cost-effective way to travel between destinations within Kenya. While they may take longer than private transportation, they offer an authentic local experience.

8. Take advantage of free activities: Many national parks and reserves offer free activities, such as walking trails, self-guided tours, and visitor centers. These activities allow you to experience the wildlife and scenery without paying for additional excursions.

9. Book your safari in advance: Booking your safari in advance, especially during peak season, can help you secure the best deals and avoid last-minute price spikes. Consider booking directly with local tour operators or through reputable online platforms.

10. Be flexible and open to new experiences: Embrace the unpredictability of a safari and be open to adjusting your itinerary based on local recommendations and unforeseen circumstances. Sometimes the most memorable experiences come from unplanned encounters and detours.

Remember, planning a budget-friendly safari in Kenya is about making smart choices and maximizing value without sacrificing the essence of the experience. With careful planning, research, and flexibility, you can create a memorable and rewarding safari adventure without breaking the bank.

The budget for a Kenya safari can vary widely depending on several factors, including the duration of the trip, the choice of accommodations, the season of travel, and the activities included in the itinerary. Here are some considerations to help you estimate and plan your Kenya safari budget:

  • Accommodation costs can vary from budget-friendly options to luxury lodges and tented camps. Research different lodges and camps in the areas you plan to visit and choose based on your budget preferences.
  • The mode of transportation, whether by road or air, can impact costs. Internal flights to remote safari destinations are often more expensive than road transfers.
  • National parks and reserves in Kenya charge entrance fees. Additionally, some activities, such as guided walks or special wildlife experiences, may require additional permits or fees.
  • Peak season (dry season) usually comes with higher prices for accommodations. If you’re flexible with your travel dates, consider visiting during the shoulder or low seasons when prices may be more budget-friendly.
  • If you’re booking through a tour operator, their fees will contribute to the overall cost. Compare quotes from different operators and inquire about what is included in the package.
  • Some safari packages include meals, while others may not. Consider budgeting for meals if they are not included in your accommodation package.
  • Guided game drives, walking safaris, and other activities may be included in your package or may require an additional fee. Budget accordingly for any specific activities you want to experience.
  • Include some buffer in your budget for unexpected expenses, souvenirs, and tips for guides and staff.
  • It’s advisable to have comprehensive travel insurance that covers medical emergencies, trip cancellations, and other unforeseen events. Budget for the cost of insurance.
  • Check the visa requirements for Kenya and budget for any visa fees that may apply to your nationality.

It’s essential to do thorough research and plan your safari according to your preferences and budget constraints. Keep in mind that while there are budget-friendly options, the experience of a safari in Kenya often improves with a reasonable budget that allows for more comfortable accommodations, experienced guides, and well-planned itineraries.

For a rough estimate, a mid-range budget for a 7 to 10-day safari in Kenya could start around $2,000 to $4,000 per person, excluding international flights. Luxury safaris can range from $5,000 to $10,000 or more per person, depending on the level of luxury and exclusivity. Always obtain detailed quotes from tour operators and accommodations to get a clearer picture of the costs associated with your specific preferences.

Kenya Safari Packages

Kenya safari packages are offered by various tour operators and travel agencies, providing a range of options to suit different preferences, budgets, and interests. When choosing a safari package, consider factors such as the duration of the trip, destinations included, types of accommodations, activities offered, and the reputation of the tour operator. Here are some examples of Kenya safari packages that you might find:

Reading reviews and testimonials from other travelers can also help you choose a reputable tour operator that aligns with your safari goals.

Tanzania or Kenya Safari?

Both Tanzania and Kenya are popular safari destinations in Africa, offering stunning scenery, diverse wildlife, and rich cultural experiences. When choosing between Tanzania and Kenya for your safari, it’s important to consider your interests, budget, and desired level of luxury.

Wildlife: Both Tanzania and Kenya boast abundant wildlife, including lions, elephants, leopards, cheetahs, rhinos, and zebras. However, Tanzania is home to the Serengeti National Park, which is renowned for the Great Migration, an annual spectacle of millions of wildebeest and zebras traversing the plains. If you’re particularly interested in observing large herds of animals, Tanzania may be a better choice.

Infrastructure and Amenities: Tanzania generally offers a higher level of infrastructure and amenities compared to Kenya. This includes more luxurious lodges and camps, better roads, and more developed tourist infrastructure. If you prefer a more comfortable safari experience with top-notch amenities, Tanzania may be a better fit.

Cost: Kenya is generally more affordable than Tanzania, especially for budget-friendly safari options like camping safaris or shared group safaris. If you’re on a tight budget, Kenya may be a more suitable option.

Seasonality: Tanzania’s dry season (June to October) is considered the best time for safaris, as wildlife is more concentrated around water sources. However, the wet season (November to May) can be a more affordable time to visit, with fewer crowds and lower prices. Kenya’s dry season runs from July to October, with the shoulder seasons (April-May and November-December) offering more affordable rates and fewer crowds.

Cultural immersion: Tanzania offers more opportunities for cultural immersion, with diverse tribes like the Maasai, Hadzabe, and Datoga residing in the country. If you’re interested in experiencing local cultures and traditions, Tanzania may be a better choice.

Ultimately, the choice between Tanzania and Kenya for your safari depends on your personal preferences and priorities. Consider your interests, budget, desired level of luxury, and tolerance for crowds when making your decision.

 Kenya Safari Animals

Kenya is home to a diverse array of wildlife, making it a prime safari destination. Here are some of the notable animals you can encounter during a safari in Kenya:

  • Lion: Found in various national parks, including the Maasai Mara.
  • Elephant: Abundant in Amboseli National Park, Tsavo National Parks, and Maasai Mara.
  • Buffalo: Common in the Maasai Mara, Amboseli, and Tsavo.
  • Leopard: Often spotted in the Maasai Mara and other reserves.
  • Rhinoceros (both black and white): Spotted in parks like Lake Nakuru and Lewa Wildlife Conservancy.
  • The reticulated giraffe is common in northern Kenya, while the Maasai giraffe is found in the Maasai Mara and Nairobi.
  • Both the plains zebra and Grevy’s zebra can be found in various parks, with Grevy’s zebra more commonly seen in Samburu.
  • The annual Great Migration involves vast herds of wildebeest moving between the Serengeti in Tanzania and the Maasai Mara in Kenya.
  • The Maasai Mara is known for its high cheetah population, and these swift predators can be observed during game drives.
  • Lakes and rivers, such as those in the Maasai Mara and Amboseli, are home to hippos.
  • Crocodiles can be found in rivers and water bodies, with the Mara River being a notable location for crocodile sightings .
  • In addition to Lake Nakuru, which is known for both black and white rhinos, conservation efforts in private conservancies like Lewa have helped protect rhino populations.
  • These distinctive-looking animals can be seen in various parks, particularly in savanna and grassland habitats.
  • Rock hyraxes are small, furry mammals often found in rocky areas, including some of the national parks.
  • Though relatively rare, African wild dogs can be found in a few conservation areas, such as Laikipia.
  • The world’s largest antelope, elands can be seen in several parks, including Tsavo.
  • The Maasai Mara and Tsavo National Parks are among the areas where you can spot ostriches, the world’s largest birds.
  • While elusive, honey badgers can be found in various habitats, including savannas and grasslands.

Remember that the specific animals you encounter can depend on the time of year, the region you’re visiting, and the unique ecosystems of each national park or reserve. A knowledgeable guide can greatly enhance your safari experience by helping you spot and understand the behaviors of these incredible animals.

Here are some tips for spotting wildlife on a Kenya safari:

Go on a game drive with a professional guide: A guide will be able to help you spot animals and learn about their behavior.

Be patient and keep your eyes peeled: It can take time to spot animals, so be patient and keep your eyes peeled.

Use binoculars or a spotting scope: Binoculars or a spotting scope can help you get a closer look at animals.

Be respectful of the animals: Do not get too close to animals, and do not disturb them.

With a little planning and preparation, you can be sure to have a memorable safari experience in Kenya.

Masai & Tanzania Camping Safari

Upgraded tour. Simply, perfect. For me, this was all about animals and I was overwhelmed with the opportunities that the guides and drivers provided us while respecting the awesome individuals that oversee these beasts - the national park rangers who provide services in Kenya and Tanzania. Blessed with the time we spent with Masai; would love to come back for the opportunity to spend more time with people; I'm a loner, so animals came first, but loved the people I had the opportunity to meet.Saw the big 5 within the first 3 days we were there; experienced a small window into the precarious lives African animals live daily - just, simply, overwhelming. FYI, African elephants own my heart.

12 Days Best of Kenya and Tanzania - This review is for the planning of our safari. I worked Nancy on booking various adventures, lodging, from and to airport (NBO) shuttles, safari logistics and could not be happier with the East-Africa-Safari-Bookers! Nancy was a pleasure to work with, very responsive and helped us plan what I feel will be a great first-time family trip to Africa. I will follow-up with a review on the actual Safari which we leave for tomorrow evening (1st two weeks of June). I definitely recommend this outfitter for your Safari. I believe they make a sincere effort to make your trip special.

12 Days Best of Kenya and Tanzania Luxury Lodge Safari Tour

12 Days Best of Kenya and Tanzania Luxury Lodge Safari

Pros: The overall tour was very good. Most of the lodging was great. One night that was upgraded in Tanzania at a coffee plantation was fabulous! The tour company staff members were very responsive. We saw the big five and a number of other animals, so needless to say, the guides were pretty great as well. The optional Masai experience was amazing. Cons: the transportation was way below luxury. The first safari vehicle was awful! Small tires; it was more like a jitney type bus. On the rough roads, it was miserable. Tent camp was not for me. Private Transportation at borders should be included in tour package. Overall very good experience!

Frequently Asked Safari Questions

Here are some frequently asked questions about Kenya safaris

Kenya’s safari destinations can be visited year-round, but the best time depends on what you want to experience. The dry seasons from June to October and January to February are popular for wildlife viewing as animals gather around water sources. The Great Wildebeest Migration in the Maasai Mara typically occurs from July to October. The green season from November to May offers lush landscapes and fewer crowds, but some areas may be harder to access due to rain.

Kenya is known for its diverse wildlife. You can expect to see iconic African animals such as lions, elephants, giraffes, zebras, wildebeests, cheetahs, leopards, rhinos, and buffalo. Kenya is also a birdwatcher’s paradise with over 1,000 bird species.

Some of the top safari destinations in Kenya include the Maasai Mara National Reserve, Amboseli National Park, Tsavo National Park, Samburu National Reserve, Lake Nakuru National Park, and Aberdare National Park. Each park offers unique landscapes and wildlife experiences.

The duration of your safari depends on your interests and available time. Many people opt for a 3 to 7-day safari, but you can extend it to explore more parks and have a deeper wildlife experience. Combination safaris that include multiple parks or a beach extension in places like Mombasa or Zanzibar are also popular.

Kenya is generally safe for tourists, and safari areas are well-established and heavily regulated. However, it’s always recommended to follow safety guidelines, listen to your guide’s instructions, and take necessary precautions like avoiding walking alone at night and securing your belongings.

Kenya offers a wide range of accommodation options, including luxury lodges, tented camps, mid-range camps, and budget-friendly campsites. The choice depends on your preferences, budget, and the level of comfort you seek during your safari.

Visitors to Kenya typically require a visa, which can be obtained in advance through the Kenyan embassy/consulate or online via the eVisa system. Some nationalities are eligible for visa on arrival. It’s advisable to check the visa requirements for your specific country before traveling.

Absolutely! Many visitors combine their Kenya safari with other activities such as beach vacations, cultural tours, hiking Mount Kenya, hot air balloon rides, or visits to local communities to experience the diverse culture and natural beauty of Kenya.

Remember to check the latest travel advisories, health recommendations, and specific requirements before planning your Kenya safari. Consulting with reputable tour operators like Plain Wings Tours & Travel can also provide personalized assistance and guidance for your safari adventure in Kenya.

What Our Client Say About Us

safari kenya tour operator

Juomo and Zach were fantastic hosts and guides. They made us feel so comfortable and above all, they treated our 88 year old father with such respect and love, making this a truly unforgettable experience for us all.

Harj Mudhar

Guide very friendly client oriented and try to show you animal migration. Trip was cool. There was small minus. There must be some recommendations about safari. Dark or grey jacket because when it Wallis be night it’s cold.

Doing a safari is an inexplicable experience, but doing the safari with a guide like Juma and Zack is something incalculable, 100×100 recommended, I would return a thousand times! Thank you Juma and Zack for so much.

I know it's high season, but I've also heard it's not hard to find a tour if you're flexible. What I am interested in is, what is the range of tours you can book? Can you book balloon viewing so last minute? Can you book better accommodations, or just basic? Can you book longer safaris, in different parks? Our budget is actually flexible, but we like the thrill of last minute shopping :) Thanks!

very unlikely to get tours to masai mara in August, the most of the camps were sold out as far as last year.

Balloon safaris have limited space as well, you might not be able to book the same on last minute.

Reach out to some operators to see what is left in August, you must provide dates.

Hi Blumenrotgelb,

-I've seen a couple of people going for balloon viewing and paying the same day of the experience, which in most cases it wasn't in their tour package and they happened to be at the park n the guide suggested a balloon ride or they themselves had about a ballon ride n they'd love to experience it. However, if it's in your tour package, your tour company will book it in advance or the day of balloon ride , depending on the company's way of doing things . However, balloon ride is also a matter of luck, you might or might not get a chance especially during peak season

-Most definitely, you can book longer safaris in different parks, whether you've planned in advance or last minute. The issue is the accommodation after the game drive in those parks

-I haven't understood your question when you said , what is the range of tours you can book? Do you mean the tour operator companies available? Wildlife safari and beach vacation ? Midrange budgets to Luxurious safaris? Tour packages available? You can send me a message if you need any further clarification

-And also if you were travelling alone, it'd be much easier to be flexible but if you are travelling with other people, booking in advance is well advised

We are a couple. We are flexible with accommodation, everything from decent to luxury works, we're not aiming to something specific. For the range, I meant we are generally very flexible.

Is it possible to also book last minute kenya plus tanzania longer tours?

Thanks again

I've seen you've mentioned about Tanzania also , which would be nice to visit also.

You are much more likely to get the best values and best experiences by researching and booking well in advance.

You are much more likely to wind up with poor lodging/guides etc. by waiting to book at the last minute. You are also more likely to get scammed trying to book last minute.
