Captain on the bridge

Learning how to operate a cruise ship takes teamwork, quick thinking and hours in a room-sized simulator.

cruise line simulator

Nothing quite prepares you for the experience of sailing into Sydney Harbour at dawn. I'm on the bridge of the cruise ship Royal Princess as we pass The Heads, the two rocky promontories that form the harbor's entrance. Against a brilliant orange sky, I can make out classic Sydney sights: the captivating sails of the Opera House, the iron arch of the Harbour Bridge, and the island speck of Fort Denison. There's even an early morning ferry from Manly taking commuters to Circular Quay.

It's a breathtaking sight and I have to remind myself: It's not real. I'm not on the Royal Princess at all, and I'm not even in Australia. I'm 10,000 miles away in an office building just outside of Amsterdam on a full-size bridge simulator at Carnival Corporation's Center for Simulator Maritime Training Academy ( CSMART ).

Opened last July, CSMART is where Miami-based Carnival trains the bridge and engineering officers for the 10 cruise lines it operates worldwide (besides Princess, the company's brands include Holland America, Cunard, and of course, Carnival). Before newly employed officers can work on a ship and then once a year during their tenure, they come here for lessons on not just operating a massive ship, but also how to work and communicate as a team, make decisions and follow procedures both in routine and extraordinary circumstances.

Combining those skills is at the core of Carnival's training, says Hans Hederstrom, the center's managing director. "You always have to plan carefully and assess risk [when handling a ship]," he says. "When those competencies interact, you create safety."

cruise-sim-23.jpg

G'day, Sydney. You're looking lovely.

As real as possible

My day and a half at CSMART was an abbreviated version of the weeklong training session that a student officer would experience. I had an hour of classroom-based lessons followed by three hours in the bridge simulator and a demonstration in an engine room simulator that copies the design and equipment of actual ship engine rooms.

The building, which stands in a pancake-flat polder reclaimed from the sea 60 years ago, is so new you can smell the fresh carpet. But CSMART's most impressive attraction is the four bridge simulators (or sims) where officers can sail to ports around the world on any of the company's 101 ships. Unlike a typical airplane simulator that moves on hydraulic jacks, the bridge sims are stationary rooms built to match the bridge size and layout on two of the company's ships, the Royal Princess that took me into Sydney and Holland America's Koningsdam .

"We wanted to give the impression that when you come onto a simulator, you come onto a huge cruise vessel," says Technical Director Lars Husted. "They're huge vessels, so we wanted the [simulator] to be huge."

Despite the glowing computer displays and radar screens that dot its interior, the sim is decidedly underwhelming when I first walk in. Removable panels like those that cover office ceilings around the world are overhead and a dull patterned carpet straight out of an airport terminal is beneath my feet. The sim's most prominent feature is dark windows wrapping around three sides of the space that reflect the harsh ceiling lighting.

Inside a cruise ship simulator

cruise line simulator

Once the lights are off, though, and the program is running on the 220-degree screen beyond the windows, it all gets much more exciting. Suddenly, we're in the middle of a stormy English Channel with whitecaps on the water beneath brooding skies. The ship is rolling in the heavy seas or at least feels like it's rolling. Though the room isn't moving an inch, your mind plays a lot of tricks when the horizon dips on a screen that almost surrounds you. After only a few minutes I felt a little woozy.

Everything about the sim -- the controls, the displays, the furniture and even how long it takes to walk between the different control stations -- is just how it would be on a ship. There are even virtual "binoculars" that will give you a close-up view of what's on the giant screen. "It's very important that it's realistic," Husted says. "The advantage is that you can make realistic scenarios of how long it takes to walk from point A to point B."

cruise-sim-7.jpg

Watch out, stormy seas ahead.

Putting out an engine fire

Beyond learning how to run a ship's engines at CSMART, engineering officers also train on how to navigate a ship's interior and locate vital equipment in an emergency. Think of it like playing a video game, complete with a Microsoft Xbox controller. After a computerized ship's engine room appeared on the display in front of him, I watched an instructor use the controller to maneuver through hallways to extinguish a simulated fire. Tapping on the display even let him press buttons on virtual control panels.

The point, says Husted, is to make the experience as authentic as possible. Simulated smoke on the display obscured our view, real alarm sirens blared loudly and subwoofers made the floor vibrate just as it would onboard ship. "It's extremely realistic," he says. "[The officer hears] the same noises and feels the same vibration. What he sees [on the display] is just what he'd see in the actual room."

cruise-sim-6.jpg

A CSMART instructor uses a training station to extinguish and engine room fire.

Taking the helm

My turn comes the next day. My goal? Maneuver the Royal Princess (she gets around) into Hong Kong's Victoria Harbour and dock at the city's cruise terminal. In other words, I'll be at the wheel of a ship that's just over 1,000 feet long and 13 decks high in the middle of one of the world's busiest ports. So, yeah, no pressure.

As the navigator, I'll be in charge of controlling the ship's direction and speed, which combine to determine our turning radius. Next to me is the co-navigator (actually, a CSMART instructor) whose role is to cross-check and challenge me. Also on the bridge is an operations director, who's watching and supervising both of us.

As I call out commands for where to take the ship (admittedly, someone was kindly suggesting what I should do), the co-navigator repeats the commands, to which I reply, "Yes." Only after that three-part verbal conversation has occurred am I allowed to actually make the ship do what I said. Instead of the giant spoked wheel you might be imagining, I'm primarily using a tiny control barely 2 inches tall to move the ship. It's amazing that something so small controls something so big. (I also can input my desired speed and heading into a computer and the ship will follow my commands.)

cruise-sim-28.jpg

Victoria Harbour in Hong Kong is a busy place.

On one side is Hong Kong Island, with its mass of skyscrapers crowding the green slopes of The Peak. It's just as jaw-dropping as Sydney, but there's no time for sightseeing when the narrow harbor is crowded with buoys, other boats and the wreck of a sunken ship. Constant checks of the radar screen and the electronic chart help me stay clear of obstacles like Cunard's Queen Victoria passing on our port side and a giant oil rig under tow behind us.

Just as when you're at sea, the sim's weather conditions can change quickly. So I try not to be frazzled when a dense fog descends on us for a few minutes. But it's a few minutes later as we round the point of Kowloon that the hard part begins.

Now I have to take us a bit past the cruise terminal and back us in, all while dodging the Star Ferry pulling into its pier. Easy, perhaps, as docking a massive ship goes, but not when you've never driven anything bigger than a moving van.

A ship like this hardly stops on a dime, but I get us into position relatively smoothly. Then, once the pier is close, my co-navigator and I walk to a separate simulator on the far side of the room that's designed to mimic the feeling of standing in one of the bridge wings (the pointed ends on either side of a bridge that stick out over the water). Beyond the three-sided windows is a spherical screen that gives me a full view alongside of the ship, out to the wharf and down to the water below. Again, it's what I'd see on a real ship. (The main and bridge wing sims can operate together or independently.)

It takes a lot of adjustments on the small levers that operate the main engines and side thrusters, but I eventually get us close enough. Hello, Hong Kong, nice to see you.

cruise-sim-34.jpg

Sailing into a simulated Southampton, England we passed Cunard's Queen Mary 2

Time for a debrief

During my debrief in the next room, an instructor evaluates my performance while showing the ship's track on an electronic chart on an 84-inch HD display together with other displays showing the radar picture and video recording. I did all right, he says, (Yay, me!) even if I took a long time getting us there.

The debrief reminds me of something Hederstrom told me the day before: Though the astonishingly immersive technology that I just experienced is critical to Carnival's training, understanding the need to always work through a plan forms its bedrock. And since bridge crew normally rotate roles during the length of a cruise, it's essential that everyone know what everyone else is doing."[Crews] should not always try to solve the problems by themselves," he said. "We all have to have the same plan in our head and follow it."

It makes me feel better knowing that my Carnival ship will be under steady control the next time I'm relaxing on a promenade deck with a mai tai. For now, though, I'm ready for some dim sum.

Settlement reached in lawsuit between Disney and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis' allies

2 rip current statements in effect for coastal flagler and coastal volusia regions, carnival freedom catches fire near bahamas; 2 future cruises from port canaveral canceled, march 25 and 29 freedom cruises have been canceled.

Jacob Langston , Digital Journalist

A fire broke out in the exhaust funnel of the Carnival Freedom cruise ship near the Bahamas on Saturday, according to a news release.

Officials said the fire was quickly extinguished, but the damage is worse than originally anticipated. As a result, the cruise line announced the March 25 and 29 Freedom cruises from Port Canaveral have been canceled.

According to the release, witnesses reported seeing a lightning strike, but the the cause of the fire has not yet been determined.

“The funnel has been stabilized for the ship’s return to Port Canaveral overnight to disembark guests, and then it will go to the Freeport shipyard on Monday afternoon to begin the required repairs,” the release read in part. “We sincerely regret the impact to our embarking guests, as we know they have been looking forward to their spring break vacation. We are providing all guests on both cancelled cruises a full refund and a 100% future cruise credit so they can come back and enjoy a future cruise with us.”

This is the second time in the past two years that a fire broke out on the Freedom. In May of 2022, the ship was docked in Grand Turk when flames erupted from the exhaust funnel.

Florida donors with state business fueled last months of DeSantis 2024 run

A large share of the money brought in during desantis’s final period as a candidate came from donors who had businesses that benefited from state decisions.

The biggest donors in Republican politics largely shunned Ron DeSantis after his presidential campaign began to falter last summer. So his allies turned to donors the Florida governor still held sway over because of his day job.

A state coronavirus response contractor, CDR Enterprises, gave $1 million to his aligned super PAC Fight Right in the final weeks of the campaign. The DeSantis administration has issued purchase orders to the company worth $158 million to help distribute vaccines, treat patients and provide other services, sometimes through no-bid contracts, according to state records.

Herzog Railroad Services — a Missouri company the DeSantis team hired to build a $35 million Orlando commuter rail extension — gave $250,000 around the same time to Never Back Down, another aligned super PAC.

And a casino magnate, Jeffrey Soffer, gave $1 million in late July — on the same day that the campaign announced massive layoffs. DeSantis came out in support of Soffer’s controversial bid to transfer a casino license to his Fontainebleau hotel in Miami Beach weeks after leaving the presidential race .

People involved in the DeSantis fundraising effort described the dependence on donors with business before Florida as part of a strategic shift born of necessity. Lobbyist friends and fundraisers of DeSantis called Florida clients asking them to contribute to the super PACs paying for television ads and field operations — and many of those people gave, according to people familiar with the situation who spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe private discussions. The pitch, according to one person who received a call, was that DeSantis was likely to remain a powerful governor in the state.

DeSantis had entered the presidential campaign as the richest candidate in politics, with $82.5 million in state campaign funds that seeded one of his super PACs, Never Back Down. But the governor raised relatively little from major donors between June 30 and the end of the year, when most deep-pocketed Republicans who play in national politics looked elsewhere, eventually settling on the campaign of former U.N. ambassador Nikki Haley .

Only 11 percent of the $147 million raised in 2023 by Never Back Down and Fight Right came in the second half of the year, according to campaign finance records. Many of the biggest donations had deep interests in Florida. Never Back Down, which raised nearly all of the funds, took in 37 percent of its haul from Florida-based donors in the first half of the year, not counting the transfer from the governor’s own political committee, according to campaign finance filings. The group raised 57 percent of its funds from Florida-based donors in the second half of the year.

James Uthmeier, DeSantis’s chief of staff and former campaign manager, said in response to a request for comment that “the premise of your article is entirely false.”

“Anybody working closely with the governor, such as I do, knows he is a man of unwavering principle and he would be the last person to grant access or state favor in exchange for political support, as your article suggests,” he said in a statement. “However, it is the case that many people who work in and around Florida supported his campaign because they genuinely believed he was the best candidate, and many have seen firsthand the incredible results of his leadership in our state.”

Now that he is no longer a candidate, DeSantis has continued to court donors, and has not ruled out another campaign when he leaves office in 2027. He plans to host a two-day “Investor Appreciation Retreat” in early April at a Hard Rock Hotel in Hollywood, Fla., which is owned by Seminole Gaming, a benefactor of the governor’s official decisions.

DeSantis had signed a deal with Seminole Gaming in 2021 to allow it to offer statewide sports betting in exchange for new gaming taxes that DeSantis estimated would bring an additional $6 billion in state revenue through 2030. The tribally owned company gave $1 million to DeSantis’s reelection campaign and an additional $3 million to the Republican Governors Association, which supported DeSantis’s reelection. Then in August, after DeSantis’s presidential campaign had announced layoffs for low fundraising, the tribal company wrote a $1 million check to Never Back Down.

Now that the campaign is over, Seminole is continuing to support the DeSantis political operation. The company has offered to subsidize the cost of the retreat, according to a person familiar with the planning. The event is designed to thank donors of $250,000 or more.

Gary Bitner, a spokesman for Seminole Gaming, declined to comment on questions about the donation to Never Back Down and the April event. Herzog Railroad Services did not respond to a request for comment.

Another major supporter is Craig Mateer, a DeSantis appointee to the Orlando airport authority and the Florida State University system’s board of governors. On Tuesday, DeSantis announced that he is appointing Mateer to the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District, the group that DeSantis and state lawmakers created to oversee Disney World amid the governor’s feud with Disney.

Campaign finance records show the campaign paid $531,955 to a Mateer-affiliated company, TMFB Management Services, for travel expenses, while Never Back Down similarly paid $266,551 to TMFB Transportation in the second half of the year. By making his planes available for the governor, Mateer helped ensure they could book travel on short notice, according to a person familiar with the arrangement.

“Regarding transportation services, it was our pleasure to support Ron DeSantis for President and provide legally, sound, safe and fast flights. We look forward to supporting him in the future,” Mateer said in an email.

Mateer has since offered DeSantis allies another perk. Top aides to the governor, including Uthmeier, have been holding meetings in recent months with lobbyists at the bar of Tallahassee’s Governors Inn, a hotel and bar owned by Mateer just blocks from the state capitol, according to people familiar with the meetings.

The arrangement has raised eyebrows among lawmakers because the property remains closed to the public after a recent renovation. A person who recently answered the phone at the property said it was only open to friends and family of the owners. The inn’s website says the institution remains “closed for renovation.” People familiar with the arrangement say the bar accepts payment in cash.

“We’re thrilled there’s so much interest in the opening of the historic Governors Inn. As it’s from the 1800s, there is much to renovate and the building was taken down to the studs, but stay tuned for our opening,” Mateer said. He did not comment on the DeSantis team’s use of the property in the meantime.

Before his appointment to the Orlando airport authority by DeSantis, Mateer owned an airport baggage logistics company, Baggage Airline Guest Services, which provides baggage handling for the cruise ship industry out of the Orlando airport. He sold the company in 2018 for $275 million, according to a news release from Mateers’s law firm . He received a patent in February, after his appointment, for technology to track bags as they are transferred between airports and cruise ships, according to public records.

Angela Starke, a spokeswoman for the aviation authority, said that board members are governed by state conflict of interest statutes and that members of the current board have not recused themselves from matters before the airport under those guidelines.

DeSantis has a history throughout his governorship of courting major donors, including to facilitate his penchant for private air travel. He took numerous undisclosed trips on private jets and accepted lodging and dining from major donors, according to flight manifests, tracking data and other documents previously obtained by The Washington Post. One donor also lent the Governor’s Mansion a pricey golf simulator ; DeSantis later steered $92 million in leftover federal coronavirus stimulus money to a controversial highway interchange project that directly benefited that same donor.

In the final months of the campaign, Nick Iarossi, a top Tallahassee lobbyist and co-finance chairman of the DeSantis campaign, contacted another one of his clients, Carlos Duart, the CEO of CDR Enterprises, to solicit the December donation, according to people familiar with the contribution. Iarossi, a friend of DeSantis, had lobbied on Duart’s behalf in the past and continues to work for him, according to a person with knowledge of the matter.

CDR — which received a no-bid contract from DeSantis’s team to provide covid vaccinations in long-term care facilities — sent a $1 million check just days before Christmas, at a time when most major donors had written off DeSantis as a viable contender, according to campaign finance records. It was the only seven-figure check the DeSantis effort received in December, highlighting just how difficult fundraising had become.

Iarossi and Duart declined to comment.

Sometimes local interests appeared to be making a point of their loyalty. On July 25, the DeSantis campaign announced that it had laid off about a third of its employees because of a fundraising shortfall. On that same day, Soffer, the chairman and chief executive officer of the Fontainebleau Development, gave $1 million to Never Back Down, campaign records show.

Soffer had been a frequent benefactor to DeSantis, giving the governor use of his private plane while in office, according to campaign finance records. Soffer’s company also hired the lobbying firm of Michael Corcoran, a member of DeSantis’s presidential campaign’s national finance advisory board. DeSantis appointed Michael’s brother, former Florida House speaker Richard Corcoran (R), as his state education secretary and later as the president of the New College of Florida.

At the time of his July donation, Soffer was pressuring Tallahassee lawmakers for legislative approval to transfer a casino license from Broward County to his Fontainebleau hotel. The proposal pushed by Soffer has been introduced in the state legislature by Sen. Blaise Ingoglia (R), a top ally to DeSantis. Ingoglia has secured endorsements for the governor in the state, raised money for his campaign and is widely viewed in Florida political circles as the legislator most aligned with the governor. Blaise also took over Friends of Ron DeSantis after it transferred all its money to Never Back Down.

Two weeks after DeSantis left the race on Feb. 5, a DeSantis spokesman announced that the governor was “open” to supporting legislation approving the casino license move to Miami Beach since it would remove a casino “out of a residential blue-collar community.”

The bill nonetheless failed to pass out of the legislature for the governor’s signature. But Soffer is expected to make another push for the move in the next legislative session. Michael Corcoran and Fontainebleau Development did not respond to a request for comment on the donations.

Carnival Stock Rises After Posting Smaller-Than-Expected Q1 Loss

cruise line simulator

AaronP/Bauer-Griffin / Contributor / Getty Images

Key Takeaways

  • Carnival Corp. stock turned higher in intraday trading Wednesday after the cruise line posted a smaller adjusted loss than analysts expected.
  • Full-year adjusted income guidance got a slight bump, but Carnival's projection is below analyst estimates.
  • The company also acknowledged that Tuesday's collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore and conflict in the Red Sea could affect its full-year earnings.

Carnival Corp. ( CCL ) shares turned higher in intraday trading Wednesday after the cruise line posted a smaller adjusted first-quarter loss than analysts expected.

Carnival posted record first-quarter revenue of $5.41 billion, narrowly missing analyst estimates compiled by Visible Alpha of $5.43 billion. The cruise line also posted a smaller adjusted net loss than expected of $180 million, or an adjusted loss of 14 cents per share.

The company raised its full-year guidance, while noting that Tuesday's collapse of Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge isn't yet included, due to how recently it took place. The bridge collapse is currently estimated to ding the company's full-year net income by up to $10 million, and continuing to reroute ships to avoid conflict in the Red Sea could affect adjusted earnings before interest, taxes,  depreciation , and  amortization (EBITDA) by about $130 million.

Carnival is currently projecting full-year 2024 adjusted income of about $1.28 billion, up from a prior outlook of $1.2 billion but still below analyst estimates of about $1.36 billion.

"This has been a fantastic start to the year. We delivered another strong quarter that outperformed guidance on every measure, while concluding a monumental wave season that achieved all-time high booking volumes at considerably higher prices," Carnival Chief Executive Officer (CEO ) Josh Weinstein said.

Carnival has only posted one profitable quarter since 2020, fiscal 2023's third quarter . The cruise line and rivals Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. ( RCL ) and Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd. ( NCLH ) have worked in recent quarters to make up for the billions of dollars they lost because of the pandemic.

Carnival shares were up nearly 3% at $17.55 around 1:30 p.m. ET Wednesday after slipping to $16.17 early in the session. They have gained 90% over the last 12 months.

T he launch of Disney Cruise Line in 1998 was a game changer for family cruises. Now in its third decade of operation, Disney Cruise Line consistently tops the list of best cruise lines for families. A host of other cruise lines, including Carnival Cruises , Princess , Norwegian , MSC , and Royal Caribbean , have helped usher in a new era of family vacations on cruise ships with amenities like kids clubs, water parks, stage shows, theatrical dining experiences, reduced fares for young children, and even kids sail free deals . And because the best cruise ships for kids are also great for grownups , you have plenty of options when it comes to the best family cruises.

NO HIDDEN FEES: 7 best all-inclusive cruise lines in the world

Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.

1. Disney Wish

Disney Cruise Line

The sheer volume of onboard entertainment options for families on Disney Cruise Line's newest ship, Disney Wish , takes things to a whole new level. From action-packed dinner-and-a-show experiences like Worlds of Marvel and Arendelle: A Frozen Dining Adventure to the Star Wars: Hyperspace Lounge , and Incredibles-themed inflatable obstacle course , you'll never run out of things to do.

BIG SAVINGS: Kids sail free: 7 cruise lines with kids cruise free deals this year

Sailings on the Disney Wish also include a stop at Disney’s private island, Castaway Cay , which is always a highlight of any family cruise. Castaway Cay’s family beach is a great place for swimming, and you can rent bikes, kayaks, and snorkeling gear to see colorful tropical fish and perhaps even a sea turtle munching on seagrass.

2. Disney Magic

While every ship in the Disney Cruise Line fleet has a claim to be among the best family cruises, the original DCL family cruise ship deserves a special mention: Disney Magic is the ship that launched Disney Cruise Line in 1998, and with DCL's constant improvements and upkeep, the ship doesn’t feel outdated at all. Pirates, princesses, superheroes, and a thrilling water slide with a three-story drop are just a few of the fun features that make this a kid-favorite ship on one of the best cruise lines for families. In 2013, Disney added the AquaDunk high-speed thrill slide and Marvel Avengers Academy kids club. In 2018, a Tangled dinner theater restaurant made its debut.

WATER WORLDS: 50 best cruise ship water parks for kids and tweens

As one of the smaller ships in the Disney Cruise Line fleet, Disney Magic can be a less overwhelming experience for younger kids and first-time cruisers, especially given the trend among family cruises to be bigger and louder with every new ship. (The fabulous Disney Wonder is similarly sized.) But there's more than one reason to consider a Disney Magic voyage in 2024. This year, the ship will be the first to sail to Disney Cruise Line’s newest private island destination, Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point , in the Bahamas.

3. Disney Treasure

Making its debut in December 2024, Disney Cruise Line's sixth ship will be called Disney Treasure and it will be the ship for fans of the Disney theme parks. Venues inspired by classic attractions such as the Haunted Mansion, Jungle Cruise, and 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea are among the highlights to look forward to when the ship sets sail. The sister ship of Disney Wish will also have a high-tech Worlds of Marvel dinner show and a theater-in-the-round dining experience, this time themed to Pixar’s Coco.

CAPTAIN MICKEY: 7 best Disney cruises for families in 2024

Disney Treasure will also feature a brand-new original Broadway-style production called "Disney The Tale of Moana" in the Walt Disney Theatre. Other shows performed on board will include "Beauty and the Beast" and "Disney Seas the Adventure." Best of all, Disney Treasure will sail seven-night itineraries to both the Eastern Caribbean and Western Caribbean. That means you can enjoy two distinct dinner shows in the Worlds of Marvel and Plaza de Coco restaurants, and all of the Broadway-style shows on stage during one family cruise.

4. Icon of the Seas

Royal Caribbean

A brand-new class of ship is heading to North America in 2024, and it starts with Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas in January. Among the many firsts for Icon of the Seas is the AquaDome, the largest glass and steel structure on any cruise ship, seven pools, six record-breaking waterslides, eight separate neighborhoods, 40 ways to drink and dine, four stages, and a three-level ultimate family townhouse. The innovative AquaDome is a peaceful oasis during the day and a vibrant hotspot at night with a 55-foot-tall water curtain and AquaTheater that debuts performances with divers, skateboarders, and robots.

FAMILY CRUISES: 5 best cruise ships to entertain your teen

Thrill-seekers will love Category 6, the largest waterpark at sea with six waterslides. There's also the Crown’s Edge, which is part skywalk, part ropes course, and 100 percent thrill ride where you can dangle 154 feet above the ocean. And, of course, you'll also find the Royal Caribbean staple FlowRider surf simulator and the Lost Dunes mini golf course. Those looking to take it easy should head to Chill Island, which features four pools spread over three decks with sweeping ocean views.

Fans of Royal Caribbean will enjoy the Royal Promenade with 15 restaurants, bars, and lounges; Central Park's open-air neighborhood filled with live plants and trees; and Surfside, the first neighborhood designed specifically for young families. The ship's seven-night Eastern and Western Caribbean family cruises all stop at Perfect Day at CocoCay , the line’s award-winning private island. Families will find an array of activities on Perfect Day at CocoCay, such as its beaches and freshwater pool (included) and an expansive water park and zip line (available for an extra charge).

5. Wonder of the Seas

Royal Caribbean's Oasis-class ships debuted in early 2022 and instantly ignited buzz that they might be the most kid-friendly cruise ships in the entire world. At 1,188 feet long and 18 decks tall, there's plenty of room for families to spread out and find entertainment onboard the Wonder of the Seas . Two dedicated private teen spaces onboard make vacationing with teenagers a little easier. In fact, teens aged 16 and up can even enjoy a massive teens-only hot tub that literally protrudes over the edge of the ship on Wonder of the Seas' deck 15.

SCENIC VOYAGES: Everything you need to know about river cruises in the USA

Grade school kids and even the littlest ones have it pretty great, too. For big kids, there’s an enormous multiple-deck play area called Wonder Playscape . For the youngest passengers, there's the Adventure Ocean play area full of soft toys and games for toddlers. And a playground with climbing equipment gives them a space to work off their energy. Wonder of the Seas also has the most amazing family suites around. They come complete with two levels of space, an in-suite slide, table tennis, and plenty of room for the whole family.

6. Oasis of the Seas

When it launched in 2009, Royal Caribbean’s Oasis of the Seas was the largest ship in the world, accommodating more than 5,500 passengers per voyage and cementing the line's place among the best cruise lines for families. After a reimagining 10 years later, Oasis of the Seas is still a popular option for family cruises in 2024 with its Caribbean-inspired pool deck, rock climbing walls, and Perfect Storm trio of multistory waterslides. Among the many reasons that make Royal Caribbean one of the best cruise lines for families is that its Symphony of the Seas builds upon the strengths of the line’s other Oasis Class ships.

7. Norwegian Viva

Norwegian Cruise Line

What makes Norwegian one of the best cruise lines for families? For one thing, you’ll never hear "I’m bored" from kids. And with its three-story race track, two escape rooms, The Rush and The Drop dry slides, The Wave waterslide, immersive virtual reality games, Topgolf simulator, mini golf, waterpark, splash ground, and kids’ clubs, your family’s biggest problem on the Norwegian Viva might just be deciding how to balance all the activities with quiet relaxation.

GO ALL IN: These 6 cruise lines offer the best themed cruises

The Norwegian Viva arrived in North America in December 2023 and offers Caribbean cruises from San Juan, Puerto Rico, in early 2024 before heading to Europe through November. The ship's Observation Lounge has panoramic 180-degree views to soak in the scenery or take Insta-worthy photos on Oceanwalk’s glass walkway. After playing the day away in port or on the ship, your family can enjoy dinner followed by a live performance of Beetlejuice: The Musical, based on the cult-classic Tim Burton film.

8. Carnival Panorama

Carnival Cruise Line

One of Carnival Cruise Line ’s newer ships, the Carnival Panorama 's many kid-friendly features have already made it one of the best cruises for families. The Panorama has supervised kids programs in three different age categories, a massive aqua park, the popular SkyRide aerial attraction, SkyCourse ropes course, and the first SkyZone trampoline park at sea.

DON'T OVERPAY: How to save money on a Carnival Cruise (with or without kids)

In addition, Carnival's exclusive partnership with Dr. Seuss Enterprises provides "Seuss at Sea" experiences on family cruise vacations, such as Dr. Seuss Bookville, Green Eggs and Ham Breakfast, and the Seuss-a-palooza Parade. Based in Los Angeles, Carnival Panorama sails week-long round-trip cruises to the Mexican Riviera in 2024.

9. Caribbean Princess

Princess Cruises

Made famous by the classic '80s TV series "The Love Boat," Princess Cruises now hosts more than two million passengers each year. Kid-friendly Caribbean Princess underwent an extensive renovation in 2017 that boosted its family offerings to include Camp Discovery Youth and Teen Center, HD Movies Under the Stars, and the Reef Family Splash Zone (the line's first splash zone at sea).

MOVIES UNDER THE STARS: 11 best outdoor movie screens for your backyard staycation

Caribbean Princess will be 20 years old in 2024, but another extensive drydock refurbishment in 2022 has kept the ship from feeling dated. Other features that earn the Caribbean Princess a spot on my list of best family cruises include its partnership with Discovery Inc. for "Discovery at SEA" activities, which feature Animal Planet and Discovery Channel programming, the Stanley the Bear experience, and JrChef@Sea cooking classes. In summer 2024, Caribbean Princess heads to Southampton for a series of European cruises before heading back to Florida.

10. MSC Meraviglia

Unless you're a hardcore cruise family, MSC Cruises might be the largest cruise line you’ve never heard of. One of the leading cruise lines in Europe, South America, and other parts of the world, MSC is working hard to get a foothold in North America by offering great deals on family cruises. These include kids ages 18 and under sailing free on select departures , and young children ages two and under always sailing free.

FIRST-TIMERS: 19 things to know before your first cruise with kids

Family-friendly MSC Meraviglia launched in 2017 and it features seven different kids’ clubs for children from babies to age 17. Teens have their own space with a cinema, game room, and live stage. And Meraviglia’s Polar Aquapark has three different waterslides, including a high-speed “champagne flute,” that easily make it one of the best cruises for families. Families can play together in the vast entertainment area that includes an MSC Formula One Racing Simulator, a full-sized bowling alley with two lanes, an interactive XD cinema, a flight simulator, and a video games arcade. There’s also a Sportsplex facility for basketball, tennis, squash, volleyball, pickleball, mini golf, and five-a-side soccer.

11. MSC Seascape

MSC Cruises

The U.S. flagship of the MSC Cruises brand, MSC Seascape was designed with families in mind and offers plenty of options for onboard entertainment. The cruise line's partnership with LEGO includes a DUPLO room for children ages three to six and a second LEGO room for kids ages seven to 11 with the opportunity to earn a LEGO Master Builder certificate. Teens have three different themed areas to engage with their peers.

BRING THE LITTLE ONES: 10 toddler-friendly vacations that are just as much fun for parents

You have to check out Robotron on these family cruises. Robotron is a robotic arm ride that sends you 173 feet above the sea, giving you a unique 360-degree view as you're moved in different directions and flipped upside down. At night, Robotron offers a personalized DJ experience where you can curate your musical journey with colors and music preferences.

MSC Seascape sails from Miami on the Bahamas and Caribbean family cruises, including a visit to MSC Cruises' private Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve. Ocean Cay features two miles of white sand beaches and a variety of family-friendly activities such as snorkeling, stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking, and swimming. Some family cruises dock overnight at Ocean Cay, allowing you to watch the spectacular Lighthouse light show.

12. Celebrity Equinox

Celebrity Cruises

An upscale cruise line with prices to match, Celebrity Cruises appeals to families with older children or multigenerational groups looking for luxurious family cruises. Celebrity Equinox is not the newest ship in the line (its inaugural sailing was in 2009), but this kid-friendly cruise ship received an extensive overhaul as part of the "Celebrity Revolution" in 2019 and continues to impress with its family cruises in 2024.

Marine transportation students at Massachusetts Maritime Academy have access to a simulator that gives them training to help prevent a situation like the one that happened in Baltimore, where the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed after a cargo ship that had lost power crashed into it.

As executive director of MMA's Maritime Center for Responsible Energy, Capt. Michael Burns is involved in the development and delivery of a variety of training programs for workers in the maritime and offshore wind industries.

Burns teaches students on the school's Maersk Ship's Bridge Simulator, which creates a mathematical model of a container ship that behaves like its real-life counterpart. Some simulations include undocking a tanker in Japan, transiting the Strait of Gibraltar in heavy traffic, handling a ship in heavy weather and returning to the Mass Maritime's home port in Buzzard's Bay.

"Arrival into port and departing from port outbound for sea are some of the most technically demanding parts of the mariner's job," Burns said.

Burns said he has dealt with loss of power on a vessel before, calling it a very significant and unusual event.

"Unfortunately, this seemed to happen at the worst possible time," Burns said of the Baltimore bridge collision. "You could potentially lose steering. You could lose all of your lights, all of your electricity throughout the ship. So, it can affect the steering. It can affect all of the instrumentation [on the ship's bridge]."

Burns said once the National Transportation Safety Board completes its investigation of the Baltimore incident and issues a report, Mass Maritime and other schools like it will study the findings and incorporate them into their training.

"Thousands of ships transit in and out of ports all over the world every day, and it happens safely," Burns said. "Shipping is still a very, very safe operation, but it's not without risk, just like anything else."

Burns said most cargo ships have backup emergency generators that power radio communications, which likely allowed crew members on the vessel Dali to make mayday calls before striking the Key Bridge and causing it to collapse — which almost certainly saved more lives.

Mass. Maritime officials on Cape discuss training, safety after Baltimore bridge collapse

BUZZARDS BAY — Officials from Massachusetts Maritime Academy gathered midday Tuesday to discuss with media representatives the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, Maryland .

The presentation was intended to be informative, to generally give a sense of what it would look like from the bridge for a ship coming in or out of the port of a large city.

The school's executive director of the Maritime Center for Responsible Energy, Capt. Mike Burns, spoke to the media inside the school's bridge. The backdrop of the simulator was the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge in New York City.

The discussion was also, generally, about training involved to become a master marine, and international safety standards, said Elizabeth Simmons, who is vice president of external affairs at the state university.

Baltimore bridge collapse: What do we know about the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge?

A cargo ship struck a column of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, Maryland , which carried the major highway Interstate 695 over the Patapsco River, around 1:30 a.m. Tuesday.

The bridge collapsed within seconds of the strike.

The ship sent out a "mayday" before the collision, giving officials time to stop cars from driving onto the bridge, according to USA TODAY. As of Tuesday afternoon, crews were still searching for construction workers believed to be on the bridge when it collapsed.

Has a ship ever hit a Cape Cod bridge?

Yes. In October 2016, a cruise ship clipped the Buzzards Bay Railroad Bridge , but the collision was not of the same magnitude as the Baltimore bridge strike early Tuesday. The Cape Cod bridge, which stands 135 feet above the water, was scraped by an antenna atop the Viking Star , a 131-foot-tall Norwegian cruise ship.

Some paint was lost, but all three Cape Cod bridges were inspected after the incident and found undamaged , according to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at the time.
