Perillo Tours Unveils New 2024 Escorted Italy Itineraries

rome italy

Photo: Shutterstock.com

Perillo Tours will be offering three new escorted tour options in Italy next year. Each of the new tours, ranging from nine to 12 days, highlight a different region of the country.

"Alongside Italy's larger, more well-known cities, we wanted to share with our guests some of Italy's smaller, off-the-beaten path towns and villages," said Steve Perillo, owner of Perillo Tours. "The new 2024 portfolio showcases the best of Italy, immersing travelers in beloved locations and authentic experiences, while sharing some of the country's smaller, insider secrets along the way."

Green Heart of Italy (April through October 2024) This new 11-day tour takes guests through the region Umbria, also known as Italy's "Green Heart." The tour starts in Rome, with time to explore some of the Eternal City's most renowned historical sites. Highlights of the Umbria section include a visit to the hilltop town of Spoleto, as well as Assisi, the birthplace of St. Francis. Other activities include a tour of medieval Gubbio, a cruise on Lake Trasimeno, wine and olive oil tastings, truffle hunting, and a hands-on cooking class

The Renaissance (March through October 2024) This new nine-day tour introduces guests to the Renaissance period with an emphasis on the art of Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vince, and Botticelli. The itinerary begins with a tour of Rome before heading off to Florence. Guests will visit the home of Santa Croce Church, Michelangelo's final resting place. Additional highlights include a guided walk focusing on the Medici Family. The itinerary concludes in Chianti, where guests will visit medieval towns, stop for olive oil and wine tastings, and go truffle hunting.

Best of Southern Italy (March through October 2024) During this new 12-day itinerary, guests will explore Campania and Puglia. The tour begins with a few days exploring Rome (and Vatican City), before heading to Pompeii and Naples, where guests can partake in a pizza making class. Next on the itinerary is the Puglia region and one of the oldest cities in the world, Matera (also known as the second Bethlehem). Other activities include a tour of Bari, focaccia tasting, and visits to Lecce and Alberobello.

sell 10 Day Marco Polo Tour 2024

10 Days / 8 Nights   Starting at $3995 PP (Land Rate)

Our Marco Polo Tour is the counterpart to our Vesuvius Tour. One featuring Venice, the other featuring Sorrento. Either way, you can be assured that Steve Perillo has hand-selected every hotel, restaurant, sightseeing experience and guide that will make your vacation the memory of a lifetime.

MONDAY : Boarding your overnight flight, you’re off to Italy on the adventure of a lifetime!

TUESDAY : Benvenuti a Venezia ! We are pleased to offer complimentary motorboat transfers from the Venice airport to your hotel at scheduled times. Your Perillo representative will be at the airport to greet you.

After you settle in at your hotel, take a stroll through Venice. Get lost in the traffic-free streets and alleyways. There are so many wonderful things to see!

Tonight, we’ll meet our tour leader for a brief orientation and welcome drink, followed by dinner at our favorite restaurant in Venice just steps from St. Mark’s Square.

WEDNESDAY : This morning we’ll meet our expert local guide for a walking tour of St. Mark’s Square, the great Byzantine Basilica, the Bridge of Sighs and an inside visit of the Doge’s Palace. Next, we’ll board our mostoscafi to the beautiful island of Murano, where we will visit one of the oldest glass-blowing factories. Our glass masters will show us two different glass blowing techniques: the hand-blown glass technique creating a small vase and the carved glass technique, creating a small sculpture like a glass horse, fish or cat.

Next, we’ll board our motoscafi to visit one of the world’s oldest glass-blowing factories on the island of Murano.

This afternoon you’ll have a chance to get lost in the city’s labyrinth of canals, bridges and tiny piazzas. Being a small island, it’s impossible to stray very far. But it won’t hurt to master the phrase Dov’è Piazza San Marco ?

Dinner is on your own tonight and there are lots of great choices around your hotel. Even Hemingway’s famous Harry’s Bar is just around the corner. Your guide will be happy to make suggestions. Just ask.

THURSDAY : This morning it’s back to the mainland where we’ll meet our dependable driver for the ride to Florence. But on the way, we’ll make a memorable stop: Padua.

Visitors to Padua are often surprised by a sense of deep spirituality. St. Anthony ( patron Saint of lost objects ) is buried here in the serene Basilica which dates back to the 1200s.

Tonight, we’ll enjoy dinner at our hotel. A toast ( brindisi ) to Florence and new friends!

FRIDAY : Florence, the fountainhead of the Renaissance—city of Dante, Boccaccio, Botticelli, and Da Vinci!

Enjoy a breathtaking panorama of the city atop Piazzale Michelangelo, followed by our tour of the Academy of Fine Arts where Michelangelo’s proud David stands, the majestic Cathedral built in 1296, Giotto’s Bell Tower and the Baptistery with its Gates of Paradise doors.

We follow the medieval streets to the most striking square in Florence, Piazza della Signoria and then to Florence’s most compelling Franciscan church built in 1294—Santa Croce. It’s not only an artistic shrine with frescoes by Giotto, but also the burial place of 270 of the city’s most eminent inhabitants—among them Galileo, Michelangelo, Machiavelli, and Rossini.

In the cloister next door, we see the Pazzi Chapel— widely regarded as one of the most perfect early Renaissance creations.

Tonight, please be our guest at a fine local Florentine restaurant with flowing wines and great friends. A perfect ending to a perfect day !

SATURDAY : While the ambitious city of Florence was launching the Renaissance, Siena was her laid back country cousin. Just 30 miles South of Florence, she is considered the best-preserved medieval city in Italy.

Our guided tour will include the elaborately carved Gothic cathedral, Town Hall, and Piazza del Campo – site of the famous Palio horse race. You’ll have time for lunch on your own, shopping and a little more exploring.

This afternoon we’ll visit Tenuta Torciano winery in Tuscany and meet our dear friend, Pierluigi Giachi, the world’s most enchanting sommelier. You’ll learn about the grape, the nose, food pairings and most importantly which glass to use with each wine! You’ll also get to experience an olive oil and truffle oil tasting…and of course have some fresh bread with it!

This will all be followed by a fabulous early dinner and wine tasting. Cin-Cin !

SUNDAY : This morning, we enjoy our drive south to Rome through Tuscany, Umbria and Lazio, the green heart of Italy.

This afternoon, we enjoy a relaxing, panoramic driving tour of Imperial Rome including the Roman Forum, downtown ancient Rome, the CircusMaximus, and the Great Synagogue, built in the heart of the Jewish quarter.

Then we’ll enter the Colosseum, reliving the brutal entertainment of the gladiators and the lions, refereed by the Emperor himself.

Tonight, we return to the twenty-first century and enjoy a typical Roman dinner at our hotel.

*Colosseum entrance subject to ticket availability*

MONDAY : A free day in Rome ! But don’t sleep in too late—there’s much to do and see! Ask your tour guide for suggestions.

Why not start with an espresso in Piazza Navona, toss a coin into the Trevi Fountain to ensure your return and stroll across the Tiber for another look at the Vatican. Rome is a great city for walking, shopping and people watching.

Tonight, we enjoy a delicious dinner in the characteristic district of Trastevere, one of the centers of the Roman night life. This lively area of tiny winding streets gives a taste of what one imagines Italy to be like, with cobbled streets and music-filled trattorias on every corner.

TUESDAY : This morning, it’s a ten-minute drive to another country—Vatican City! With our expert local guide we’ll tour the Vatican Museums, a massive collection of ancient Greek sculptures, medieval tapestries and Renaissance paintings.

Our visit culminates in the Sistine Chapel, the room where the Pope is elected. Next we visit St. Peter’s Basilica, by far the largest church in Christendom. We’ll see Michelangelo’s Pietà, sculpted when he was just 24, as well as Bernini’s seven-story bronze canopy located above the main altar.

( Please note that the visit of St. Peter’s Basilica is subject to availability based on the events planned by the Pope. )

Tonight, you’re free to enjoy a night in Rome on your own with your new friends. Be sure to have an ice cream at one of the best shops in Rome, close to the Trevi Fountain, “Il Gelato di San Crispino.” Try the nocciola !

WEDNESDAY : This morning you board your flight home, arriving in the USA the same day. While we say arrivederci to Italy, we realize we’re taking a little piece of it back home with us.

Thanks for traveling with the Perillo family and please return soon.

I have never enjoyed a vacation as much as this one to Hawaii. I loved the beauty and to be able to learn so much Hawaiian Traditions and Cousin Bert was the best throughout out our vacation. We are honored to have Bert our new cousin in Hawaii. Our days were action packed and so very fun. We will return. Aloha And Mahalo.

Just returned from the Vesuvious tour from 28 Aug to 6 Sep.  What a wonderful experience! Would consider another Perillo tour for sure! The key to the great experience I had on this tour was largely through the efforts of your tour coordinator, Rosella.

Highlights of Puglia

I thought it was very varied and interesting, from castles to making mozzarella, and churches to bakeries. I very much enjoyed the coastal walk to the bauxite quarry which some previous reviewers had criticised. The restaurants organised for the group meals were also v good and varied, which was great at the current time of the virus.

Eva was a great tour guide leader. She went above and beyond to help me schedule a transfer to the airport at the end of our tour .This is a very fast paced tour. I was amazed at how many things were efficiently scheduled. Everything was very organized and on time.. The hotels were 4 star quality, clean and quiet. breakfast were also great with hot entrées and continental selections. We had a great vacation and would not hesitate to use this company again.

The Italian Dream Tour

The Italian Dream

I enjoyed the cities we visited and the information and background history was well presented. The hotel were nice and our transportation to those cities was great. My concern, being a solo traveler, was there were a couple of times I travel alone through cities. One in particular was in Florence. I chose not to go on the excursion to Pisa since I had been to the city before. Our guide gave me a map and instructions on how to return to the hotel from our location. I asked if there were others not going to Pisa and I didn't receive a definitive answer. It was the next day that I found out that four other traveler did not go. I followed the map & instructions given me and I did reached the hotel, but I felt very uncomfortable traveling alone through that city. The second time was the last day in Rome, many of the travelers felt uncomfortable on securing transportation or finding their way from the Vatican to the Coliseum and returning to their hotel. That day I traveled with a group but we still felt uncomfortable getting through the city to our destinations especially at the end of the tour when we would return to our hotel. A couple of us were in different hotels and that had us traveling alone through the city. For the future, please give my concerns some thought especially since you promote safe travel for those traveling solo.

Italy from North to South Tour

Italy from North to South

I am giving this review 4 stars because I did enjoy my time in Italy because I am the type of person who would not let disappointments hinder my enjoyment of a trip. To start with I was not picked up at the airport as promised, I realize my flight was approx. 45 minutes late ( the lateness was due to the airline while we were already sitting on the runway). I arrived at 10:15, collected my luggage and headed to the meeting point, there was no one there with my name on a placard, I walked around checking different places close to my meeting point, finally at 11:25 I took a taxi that cost me 57 euros(82 CAD) for the trip to the hotel that took about 45 minutes, when I arrived the guy on the desk told me they were looking for me at the airport ??? My itinerary did disclose that the day excursion to Capri is not included between certain months, although I don't remember paying less than someone who went in October and did get this excursion. While travelling to Sorrento the representative we had on the bus informed us we could book a trip to Capri for 165 euros (wow), so I am wondering why this tour group could offer the trip but my booking agency could not, I wandered around Sorrento on the main street and came across 2 companies offering the trip to Capri for 60 euros, remember that folks if you have the time to find a local company, I would highly recommend it. Another contention with me was the solo supplement, while I was investigating this trip there was no mention of extra supplement until I hit the Book Now button, I found this to be deceiving. I paid $945 for solo supplement for a 12 day trip, of course you meet people while travelling and someone shared with me that she was doing the 9 day portion of the trip and was paying $400 USD, now I totally understand the exchange rate between CAD and USD but I really think another $445 for 3 extra days is extravagant to say the least, this is a Canadian company taking advantage of Canadians. When we returned to Rome during our travels we stayed at the same hotel I was at on my first night in Rome where I had a double room, it was comfortable by most standards. I cannot say the same for my return stay, I was in a single room and may as well been sleeping on the floor, the bed was ROCK hard. I really enjoyed Rome and have plans to return but definitely not with this company and will not use this company to book any further trips. You have disappointed me Wingbuddy and I won't give you the opportunity to do so in the future, so this is good-bye.

When we first arrived and all the list and instructions were in Spanish, I began to worry that I had ruined our family vacation. But to my surprise Claudia came to the rescue. She made sure that she gave the tour in Spanish and English for the small group of us in the group. And towards the end she went out of her way to get the English group their own guide. I believe that saved our whole vacation. So thanks Claudia.

A truly fantastic tour! The hikes were lovely with amazing views of the Amalfi Coast. Our guide, Roberta, was outstanding! She provided a lot of great information about the area and was excellent in communicating the details about all our activities. The hotel accommodations were excellent. It was nice to see so much of the surrounding area and not have to change locations. Please note that the hikes are quite difficult. There are a lot of elevation changes and climbing up, over, and around rocks. Hiking boots are a must! Highly recommend this trip!

Started in 1945 and operated by three generations of the same Italian-American family, Perillo has folks on the ground in both the U.S. and Italy. In more recent decades, the tour company has offers guided tours to Hawaii, Spain, and Greece in addition to its signature Italy tours.

TourScoop Takeaways

  • Countries: Italy, Greece, Spain, and Hawaii
  • Tour size: Up to 40 passengers
  • Tour types: Group coach tours and private group coach tours

Credibility Check

On the USTOA (U.S. Tour Operators Association) and Travelstride site, Perillo gets 4.8 out of 5 . Perillo is not BBB accredited but earns an A+ rating from the organization.

Tour Destinations

Perillo is best known as an Italy specialist, with tours that range from nine to 15 days all across Italy. The company also offers a limited number of itineraries to Greece and Spain. And for 30 years, Perillo has also been hosting guided tours to Hawaii.

Perillo’s group Italy tours focus on either a geographical region or a theme. So for instance, you could opt for a tour that focuses exclusively on Rome and the Amalfi Coast, or Sicily and Italy’s South; or you could choose a themed tour like Renaissance and let the topic take you to cities (like Florence) that were important during the period. Some tours are more food-focused (for instance, Green Heart of Italy) but all Perillo tours are focused on good food experiences.

COMFORT AND STYLE: How to Choose the Best Walking Shoes for Travel

Perillo’s Greece tour itineraries are more limited in number, but most offer a mix of land and sea excursions. The company currently offers just one Spain tour, a 13-day trip that covers much of the country. Perillo’s Hawaii tours focus on multi-island excursions that give travelers an easy way to experience the different islands of Hawaii on one itinerary. Hawaii tours range from about nine to 13 days.

Tour Guides

Perillo uses both tour directors and local guides, and both must pass a rigorous series of written and oral exams before becoming Perillo tour guides. According to Perillo: “This is a very difficult process, with approximately only one in 10 applicants passing the examinations.” And All Perillo guides are trained in the “Perillo style of ‘over-the-top’ guest service.”

Excursions/Extras

Perillo tour prices include hotels, sightseeing with expert guides, transfers, baggage handling, daily breakfast, select scheduled meals, tips, taxes, and complimentary WiFi on all Perillo coach buses. While Perillo does offer competitive airfare, it’s not included in the base price of the tour.

READY FOR ADVENTURES: Best Tour Companies for Older Travelers

There are often additional optional activities offered at (a fair and modest) extra cost during tour free time. Examples of such extras include a gondola serenade in Venice, the Illuminated Rome at Night experience, a Lake Como boat cruise, and a visit to Villa D’Este in Tivoli.

Typical Travelers

The majority of Perillo Tours’ guests fall in the 59-77 age range, and most are from the United States. Perillo Tours are popular with couples, but about 13% of tour travelers are solo travelers.

SOLO BUT NOT ALONE: 10 Best Tour Companies for Solo Travelers

Communication

Perillo communications come via via phone, email and website. Payment reminders and alerts are emailed. Final documents are mailed along with baggage tags, instructions with a travel wallet, and a travel pouch.

Loyalty Program

Perillo offers a discount, a special gift, and best available rooms for repeat travelers.

Private Options

Perillo Tours, offers private escorted tours for groups with a minimum of 12 and a maximum of 20 people. These tours are popular with multigenerational and extended families, and groups of close friends. Eight of Perillo’s signature itineraries are available as private tours, and all feature hand-selected, immersive experiences like olive oil and wine tasting in Tuscany, private boat rides around Capri, and parmigiano cheese sampling in Parma.
