Traditional winemaking techniques

  • Wines are made in small batch production, using both stainless steel tanks and French oak barrels. While our aromatic wines are habitually fermented in stainless steel to preserve varietal characteristics, others are lees aged in barrel to bring a higher level of expression and complexity.

Join us for a guided tour around the giffords hall vineyard and enjoy a tutored wine tasting afterwards., situated on an ancient glacial riverbed, our 19-acre site on fertile sandy loam soil over gravel produces quality grapes, high in natural sugars and acids, which lend themselves particularly well to sparkling and still wines..

English Vineyard FAQ’s

What is the difference between a winery and a vineyard.

To define these terms simply, a vineyard is generally defined as a plantation or plot of land designated to producing grapes for wine, whilst a winery is the building housing the wine production process. One may exist without the other, with many wineries known to purchase grapes from ‘outside’ or unassociated vineyards.

Chet Valley Vineyard houses both a vineyard and winery on site, working to produce award-winning wines from vine to bottle in a carefully constructed and refined internal process. Our guests may have the pleasure of discovering both our vineyard and winery during our regular tours and tastings. Discover more about our facilities and spaces on the winery page.

Does England produce wine?

Though England (and the United Kingdom in its entirety) is a large consumer of wine, it has previously been known as a minor producer, primarily due to its overarching cooler climate. Despite this previous perception, English wine is a growing sector, with many well-established vineyards across the country, including Chet Valley, Chapel Down, and Three Choirs producing a wide variety of award-winning wines year on year, available for purchase online, on-site, and even in national supermarkets.

Chet Valley, in particular, is placed in an ideal location for grape-growing and wine production, benefitting from some of the warmest and driest summers in the country, alongside a complex and perfectly suited terroir, featuring significant organic content. Combining traditional European techniques with bold infusions, Chet’s winemakers work to mould existing methodologies to the vineyard’s unique climate - resulting in fine, English wine.

Are there vineyards in England?

Though vineyards were once a rarity in England and the United Kingdom, according to WineGB, there are now over 500 working vineyards in the UK, with over half of this selection welcoming visitors in one form or another. Wherever you’re based, from Cumbria to Devon, you’re likely to be near a vineyard producing English wine.

Nestled in the sun-soaked hills of Bergh Apton, South Norfolk, Chet Valley Vineyard delivers both award-winning wines, and an exceptional visitor experience. With a keen focus on quality and sustainability, this well-established location delivers a range of on and off-site visitor activities, including tours, regular events, and virtual tastings.

Are wineries and vineyards the same?

Though vineyards and wineries are not the same, the two facilities often exist on the same site, under the same name, or in connection with each other. To put it simply, a vineyard produces grapes, whilst a winery produces wine.

A vineyard is generally defined as a plantation or plot of land designated to producing grapes for wine, whilst a winery is the building housing the wine production process.

Chet Valley Vineyard houses both a vineyard and winery on site, working to produce award-winning wines from vine to bottle in a carefully constructed and refined internal process. Our guests may have the pleasure of discovering both our vineyard and winery during our regular tours and tastings.

What is the best English vineyard?

Which is the ‘best English vineyard’ generally comes down to a matter of personal preference. With over 500 vineyards in operation across the UK, there’s an offering available for almost everyone, from polished commercial options, to small family businesses. Here at Chet Valley, we like to think that our vineyard offers an option for anyone.

Nestled in the sheltered, sun-soaked fields of Bergh Apton, South Norfolk, Chet Valley’s single estate Vineyard spans over 10 hectares of family-owned land, producing an award-winning range of sparkling and still fine English wine. Our vineyard and winery are family-friendly, and offer a range of popular activities throughout the year, including tours, tastings, harvests, talks, and suppers, alongside the opportunity to rent vines and produce your own wine.

For those unable to attend our activities in South Norfolk, we’ve created a range of safe, virtual offerings, including our virtual wine tasting kits and sessions.

Can you visit vineyards in the UK?

Though vineyard tourism and events, especially in England, are fast growing sectors, proving popular with visitors of all ages, visitor allowances for vineyards in the UK generally come down to decisions made by individual locations. According to WineGB, of the more than 500 operational vineyards in the UK, over half allow visitors in some form.

Vineyards with facilities and activities for visitors, such as Chet Valley Vineyard in Norfolk, often offer on-site tours, tastings, and a variety of open events, such as harvests, talks, and dinners.

Where is my nearest wine tasting event?

Whether you’re located at the boundaries of the English border, the country’s southernmost sands, there’s bound to be a wine tasting event within reach, though, as a result of the ideal soils and climate, many of the UK’s most well-established and popular vineyards and tasting events are concentrated on or near the South East, including East Anglia.

Popular wine tasting locations within England generally include Kent, East Sussex, Cambridgeshire, Shropshire, Oxfordshire, Dorset, Devon, Gloucestershire, Norfolk, Perthshire, and Yorkshire.

Chet Valley Vineyard, located in the picturesque South Norfolk, are proud to offer both on-site and virtual wine tasting events, allowing wine lovers from across the country to get involved, and experience a guided tasting, led by the site’s head winemaker.

Lovely afternoon touring and learning about the vineyards and tasting the wines with locally produced nibbles. John is an excellent host and passes on technical information easily. A delightful way to celebrate a 60th birthday with a family group and even better being able to cycle through beautiful lanes in the sun to get there .

We had a wonderful day at Chet Valley! We hired the venue for a family party and enjoyed food and wine on the balcony overlooking the beautiful vineyard scenery. We particularly enjoyed the Horatio Rose Brut which was very refreshing on a hot summers day. We had an excellent tour of the vineyard with the owner, John who was very knowledgeable about not only the vines and the wine but also the local area and all things nature related. He was also very good with the children in our party. I’d highly recommend Chet Valley Wine and also Chet Valley as a venue to hire.

Don't be deceived by the sunny photo below! A friend and I joined a Chet Valley vineyard tour earlier this year, and despite pandemic restrictions and a torrential downpour that even included hail at one point, John managed to pull off an engaging and fun event. It would appear nothing can dampen his enthusiasm. 😉 Chet Valley has a surprisingly wide range of wines of good quality. So if you are in or around Norfolk - or want an excuse to be - I highly recommend paying them a visit. (Warning: you will probably want to purchase a few bottles too...)

The East Anglia region of England has a very suitable climate for  growing grapes for sparkling wine production, as such, the wines now produced are rapidly gaining international recognition, praise and awards.

This Brut Sparkling wine is made using the traditional method. It has spent time on its lees in the cellar and has a refreshing lively mousse (the French term for the head of bubbles that rise to the top of a sparkling wine), good depth on the palate with attractive fresh fruit flavours and yeasty overtones.

The grapes used are Orion and Chardonnay. It is delightful at all times, the perfect celebratory drink and a lovely accompaniment to fish, shellfish or canapés.

“The Chardonnay has a fantastic crystalline purity of the English summer sun cooled by the breezes off the river”

Welcome to Crouch Ridge Estate

Visit us for Brunch, Lunch, Afternoon Tea / Taste and Tour, Pair and Share.

We opened our Wine Barn in June 2019, here we showcase our fine wines, sample our wine before buying from our Shop or enjoy a wine tasting experience. We say “come for the wine, stay for the view” as the raised terrace outside the Wine Barn allows visitors to enjoy the views of the Vineyard and Crouch Valley countryside overlooking the River. It is a    lovely place to sit and relax with friends and family with a glass of local Crouch Ridge wine or cup of coffee; the on-site café serves food & drinks. Daily specials are prepared by our chef to complement our wines.

The vineyards are planted with 3 classic cool climate grape varieties, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris.    These varietals are suited to the climate, soil and aspect at Crouch Ridge Estate in the heart of the Crouch Valley Region.  The characteristics of the area, ‘the terroir’ defines our fine wines, helping to make them balanced and unique. The best English vineyards to visit this summer

alt

Celebrate English Wine Week (18-26 June) with wine tours and tastings in English vineyards

From crisp whites to velvety reds, hundreds of vineyards up and down England are producing award-winning wines. To celebrate some of the magnificent wines produced on our very own soil, we’ve compiled some of the best vineyards to visit across the country - all offering great tasting sessions, tours and more.

Chapel Down Vineyard

Tenterden, Kent

Wine tasting at Chapel Down vineyard

Set in the gentle hills and high hedges of Kent’s High Weald, in an Area of Outstanding Beauty, is the Chapel Down Vineyard . The 22 acres of vineyard, has the same chalky soil as Champagné, France (just 90 miles to the south) giving the wine produced here its distinct flavour.

To get a real taste of the wines produced at Chapel Down, take a behind-the-scenes tour. A guide will show you how they grow the grapes to how they transform the fruit in to delicious wine. There’s also a tutored tasting session afterward so you can really appreciate the wines.

St Martin's Vineyard

Isles of Scilly

Rows of vines at St Martin's Vineyard, Isle of Scilly

While only 28 miles west of the mainland, the Isles of Scilly feels like a different world. With no traffic jams or major shopping centres, the only noise pollution you’ll hear is the breaking waves and cawing gulls. Set on the southerly-facing slopes of St Martin, you will find St Martin Vineyard , the UK’s smallest and most southwesterly vineyard. Self-guided vineyard tours are conducted throughout the summer, giving you the chance to explore this unique vineyard.

Without a doubt, the location of this winery is what makes it so special. The clear waters and idyllic beaches surrounding the islands provide a prevailing sense of calm making St Martins a delight. The spectacular flowers, plant life, rare birds and sea views along the heathery cliff paths all add to the thrill of St Martin.

Sharpham Vineyard

Ashprington, Devon

Sharpham Vineyard, Totnes, Devon, England. Close up of crates with green grapes in vineyard.

Sharpham Vineyard has been making fine English wine for around 30 years. Located on the bank of the River Dart in Devon. Sharpham produces red and white wines, which have won awards at both a national and international level. Enjoy a guided tour of the vineyard to gain an insight into how Sharpham Wine is produced.

As well as producing English wines, Sharpham Vineyard also makes soft English cheeses using the milk from its herd of Jersey cows. Cremet, Rustic and Savour are some of the creamy delights produced in Sharpham Dairy.

Three Choirs Vineyard

Newent, Gloucestershire

Bench looking out over vines at Three Choirs Vineyard

Nestled deep between the Costwolds and the Forest of Dean is Three Choirs , one of England’s oldest and largest vineyards. The rolling hills and valleys of Gloucestershire provide a unique climate, which is perfect for growing grapes. Explore the beautiful vineyards on a guided tour and afterwards, enjoy a light lunch with a chef's selection board.

The Three Choirs vineyard is perfectly situated to explore the beautiful Cotswolds and the Forest of Dean. If you’re thinking of planning a short break or a romantic retreat, the vineyard has rooms and lodges overlooking the vine-clad valleys. Don’t worry about going hungry either, the vineyard also has a brasserie serving the best local produce.

Ryedale Vineyard

Ryedale Vineyard, York

The Ryedale Vineyard, North Yorkshire, England

Ryedale Vineyard is the UK’s most northerly commercial vineyard, hidden away in an idyllic spot at the foot of the Yorkshire Wolds. The sunny south-facing slopes are key to producing some of England’s award-winning wines. Throughout summer Ryedale offers guided tours and tasting sessions which include a selection of wines accompanied by homemade nibbles.

Ryedale Vineyard is located only six miles from the market town of Malton, known as the food capital of Yorkshire. Malton regularly has food markets and festivals featuring the finest produce from the region. Perfect for enjoying a short break or romantic trip – taste the wine, enjoy the food and at the end of the day, settle down for a peaceful night’s sleep at Ryedale farmhouse.

Adgestone Vineyard

Isle of Wight

View across the vines at Adgestone Vineyard

It’s thought that the Romans grew vines on the Isle of Wight some 2,000 years ago. Adgestone seems to have perfected the technique now, producing red, white and rosé wines. The chalky south-facing slopes and almost frost-free climate give these wines a unique taste. Their vineyard tour offers the whole grape to glass experience, as you'll be guided around the 10-acre site and shown the whole process of turning grapes into wine.

If you’re looking to get away from the bustle of everyday life and take some time to relax, Adgestone is the ideal place to escape. Adgestone has snug double bedrooms with en-suite facilities and magnificent sea views offering a tranquil setting to relax and unwind. What could be more special than spending your evenings under the stars amongst 10 acres of vines?

Tinwood Estate Vineyard

Chichester, West Sussex

Vineyard at sunset in West Sussex

The Tinwood Vineyard started planting vines in 2007 on the edge of the beautiful South Downs National Park. Since then they have been producing fine English sparkling wines since their first crop in 2009. Tinwood runs fun wine tasting sessions that everyone is able to enjoy, enjoy the sun and a glass of bubbles after spending the day touring the beautiful vineyards.

Tinwood isn’t only a vineyard, it also offers accommodation to its guests. Lodges at the estate offer the guests the chance to stay in cabin lodges with an authentic rustic feel. The floor-to-ceiling glass windows and private veranda overlooking the vines are the real showpieces.

Langham Wine Estate

Dorchester, Dorset

Drone shot of vines at Langham Wine Estate

Langham Wine Estate , tucked away in the heart of Dorset, uses a low-intervention approach to its grape growing, minimising environmental impact and creating quality wines that are vegan friendly. On a guided tour of the estate, at the centre of which is the Grade-I listed Bingham’s Melcombe manor house, you’ll learn about all the stages of producing traditional method sparkling wines, followed by a tutored tasting.

After the tour, sit down to lunch in the 19th-century milking parkour or pre-order a Vineyard Lunch picnic (you can pick between a traditional afternoon tea or a seafood-packed platter) to enjoy on a table amongst the vines or in the rustic barn area.

Camel Valley

Bodmin, Cornwall

Outdoor tables overlooking vineyard in Cornwall

Located on Cornwall’s famous Camel Trail, Camel Valley is the only vineyard in the UK to hold a royal warrant. Currently producing sparkling, rosé and white wines, this once little vineyard has scooped up a whole heap of international prizes and supplies to a handful of British supermarkets. Daily tours run throughout the week (though not at the weekends) and include tastings of their favourite creations.

If you don’t want to take a tour, you can still enjoy a glass or two of vino on the relaxed terrace that overlooks the endless Cornish countryside, or if you just can’t bear to leave, extend your visit with a stay at one of the cottages perched above the vineyards. With fantastic panoramic views and private access to the Camel Trail, the cottages are the perfect base from which to explore Cornwall’s epic landscape.

Giffords Hall Vineyard

Hartest, Suffolk

Three Giffords Hall sparkling wines in front of barrels

Head to the pretty village of Hartest – complete with colourful thatched houses and huge village green – to find Giffords Hall Vineyard , a vineyard that dates back to the 1970s and is planted on the sandy clay of an ancient glacial riverbed. This family-run vineyard produces a myriad of sparkling wines, award-winning rosés and fruity red pinot noirs, meaning there are plenty of wines to try.

You can opt for a private or group tours of Giffords Hall, both of which provide an insight into the history of English wine and the varieties of grapes grown there. The tour will take you through the vineyard and around the winery, showing you the various stages of production, before ending up in the tasting room where you’ll have the chance to taste three still wines and three liqueurs alongside a selection of canapés. Sounds like our cup of tea!

Denbies Wine Estate

Dorking, Surrey

The vineyard at Denbies Vineyard Hotel

With an estate spanning 627 acres, Denbies , in the Surrey Hills, is England’s largest vineyard. As well as making a range of fantastic wines, Denbies is home to a hotel, a collection of restaurants and lots of tours and experiences. Take an outdoor vineyard train tour to see the most beautiful points in the vineyard (all without getting out of your seat), or book onto the Secret Vineyard Trail to meander through vines not normally open to the public, with tasting stops along the way. The Indoor Wine Tasting Experience is also popular, as you’ll learn about the history and geology of the estate before tasting four of Denbies’ award-winning wines.

Make a day of it and accompany your tour with lunch with a view at The Gallery Restaurant, overlooking the vineyard from the winery’s third floor, or enjoy al fresco dining all year round at The Conservatory Restaurant, which serves up light lunches and delicious cream teas. Or stay overnight at Denbies Vineyard Hotel. Renovated from the original 1850s farmhouse, the 17 luxury rooms have outstanding views across the estate – a sight you wouldn’t mind waking up to every day!

Hambledon Vineyard

Hambledon, Hampshire

Wooden post and vines under blue sky

Hambledon , one of England’s oldest commercial vineyards, has been growing vines since 1952 and has even served its creations in the Houses of Parliament and in British Embassies all over the world. Today, the vineyard spans over 200 acres, with over 100,000 vines pruned by hand.

If you pop into Hambledon, you can join a tour that takes you through the historical vineyards and into the estate’s underground cellars cut directly into perfect white chalk. You’ll also get to take a sneak peek at the state-of-the-art winery (it’s the only gravity-fed winery in the UK) and see how the award-winning sparkling wines are created, from grape all the way to glass. And yes, tastings are part of the package too.

Balfour Winery

Tonbridge, Kent

Group of people walking through vineyard

Set in 400 acres of scenic Kent countryside you’ll find the Hush Heath Estate, home to Balfour Winery . Pioneers for both English traditional-method sparkling wines and English still wines, this vineyard has won many a prestigious accolade since its inception back in 2002 – including being chosen as the official English wine of the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Year-round tours and tasting experiences are available here, from self-guided strolls through the vineyards, apple orchards, wildflower meadows and ancient oak woodland to expert-led tours where you’ll discover the winemaking process from grape to glass, before sitting down to try six of the vineyard’s homegrown wines. If you get a bit peckish, you can add on Kentish meat, cheese or veggie platters to your tasting, or if you want to push the boat out further, attend one of the vineyard’s many foodie events including the Balfour Dining Club, a series of four-course dinners created by the estate’s head chef and paired with Balfour wines.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).
  • The interval in the movement of trains in rush hour is  90 seconds .
