geoff tate operation mindcrime tour review

Review by Paddy Gallagher for MPM

The October Bank Holiday Weekend 2023 saw a busy line up of gigs in Belfast but the first one on my radar was the return of one of the iconic voices of Heavy Metal bringing a setlist celebrating the 35 th Anniversary of Queensrÿche’s “Operation: Mindcrime”, an album that figures highly in many esteems and is one of the quintessential Prog Metal concept albums of all time and deservedly spoke of in the same breath as Dream Theater’s “Metropolis Part 2: Scenes from a Memory”, Iron Maiden’s “Seventh Son of a Seventh Son”, Fates Warning “A Pleasant Shade of Gray”, King Diamond’s “Abigail” or Ayreon’s “The Human Equation”.

The venue tonight is the recently rebuilt Mandela Hall, part of the QUB Student’s Union complex. Initially opened in 1967 and hosting a fine list of artists including Joe Satriani and Coheed & Cambria (specifically mentioned here due to them suiting tonight’s crowd of Prog Metal aficionados), it reopened in 2022, and must now be considered one of Belfast’s finest venues. A 1000 capacity with a state-of-the-art sound and lighting system with a respectable sized stage that allows Geoff and his team plenty of space to show off their stagecraft.

Maybe it’s my lack of familiarity with this area of town, but after eventually finding a parking space and walking the short distance to the venue the band was blasting out the start of “Revolution Calling” as we entered the hall. What is obvious immediately is Geoff’s experience on stage as he uses the length and breadth of the stage to great effect.

Also, that voice!! For a man hitting mid 60’s soon he can still hit those notes like it’s 1988. Is this a great advert for red wine and Guinness and its effects on vocal cords then regular visits to a vineyard should be prescribed for all vocalists. Magnificent!

The venue is well packed, maybe not to capacity but definitely at least 80% full. A common phrase throughout the night being how Operation: Mindcrime figures very highly on many attendees’ favourite albums list. And it’s easy to see why.

The quality of the songs and the influence they had on many through the years stands testament to the craft of the those who wrote and recorded and tonight to those playing the music on stage, a multi-national ensemble consisting of Irish, Scottish, French, and American.

The title track followed by “Speak” and “Spreading The Disease” are faithfully reproduced with Geoff getting into character as the story of a drug addict, Nikki, a pawn in a series of political assassinations after manipulation by Dr X is told. The story continues with our main character’s realisation of the Dr X’s true agenda in “The Mission” before the arrival on stage of Angel who follows in the footsteps of the legendary Pamela Moore playing the character of teenage prostitute turned nun, Mary, a strong vocal performance complimenting Geoff’s in the duet parts of “Suite Sister Mary”.

The remarkable enduring properties of this album very much evident in the crowd singing along, in some cases with eyes shut absorbing the story and perhaps reliving a time in life where these songs meant so much to them.

The band consists of a variety of nationalities including Scotland’s Jack Ross on bass who has been with Geoff in previous live incarnations of the band aptly named Operation: Mindcrime and Cincinnati’s Danny Laverde on drums both providing the backbone of tonight’s proceedings. Kilkenny Ireland’s James Brown shares lead guitar duties with France’s Amaury Altmayer both doing a fine job replicating Chris DeGarmo and Michael Wilton’s twin guitar work on the album.

“The Needle Lies” follows before Mary is found dead in “Electric Requiem”. As Nikki continues in a downward spiral not knowing if he did indeed kill Mary, the intense story is portrayed vividly on stage with Geoff’s contortions and character portrayal. “Breaking The Silence” follows Nikki through the streets before he is arrested “I Don’t Believe in Love” and culminates in the present day with Nikki unable to recognise himself in a mirror “Eyes of a Stranger”. The house erupts now in roars of approval and applause as the tragic story is finished and smiling faces abound both on and off stage.

You would think after all that a wee break would be called for, but without much of a gap the opening iconic riffs of “Empire” herald more classics including “Jet City Woman”, “Take Hold of The Flame” and the beautiful “Silent Lucidity” before a surprise rendition of “Queen of the Reich” closed proceedings.

A fantastic night of emotions for those in attendance as the strength of the music presented so skilfully by those on stage took us all on a journey through time to our individual memories of what was happening in our lives and what the album “Operation: Mindcrime” means to us all.

geoff tate operation mindcrime tour review

To sum up, many I spoke to as we filed out of the hall in a none too hurried fashion trying to delay emerging into the wet, cold, and dark Belfast night stated that tonight ranks in their Top 5 of gigs attended!

Geoff still has that voice in all its glory, not depleted by the natural aging process and he has surrounded himself with a team of musicians who clearly enjoy the music they are playing.

It’s hard to beat the classics and it’s easy to see how Geoff Tate figures so prominently in the story of the Progressive Metal genre.

Geoff Tate // Operation Mind Crime 35th Anniversary // Live Review // The Nightrain // Bradford

geoff tate operation mindcrime tour review

It’s been a few weeks since we last came down to Nightrain however there’s a very good reason to bring us out tonight and that’s the 35th-anniversary tour of the album Operation Mindcrime performed by Geoff Tate.

Since first hearing this album I’ve had a steady Obsession and hearing it performed in its entirety once more is an opportunity that we can’t miss. Before the main act, however, we have Nightrain regulars Dead Demons to get us warmed up. Having reached the finals in Manchester for Metal to the Masses , these guys are ready to give their all tonight. Vocalist Mark Hale is an excellent frontman as he runs around the stage and encourages the crowd who have arrived early to get involved. Mixing his melodic yet aggressive vocals with the driving hard beats, these guys have perfected a formula as a strong 4 piece and it’s easy to see why they are a favourite support act for this venue. That mixed with their enthusiastic stage performance is a recipe for success and the crowd seemed to enjoy them as much as we did.

Up next are the fantastic Daxx & Roxane and it’s been a few years since I last saw these guys so it’s been a set I’ve been looking forward to. Their fast-hitting bluesy music is always guaranteed to get you moving and the guys themselves are mesmerising to watch. The whole band bounces off one another’s energy and you’re never quite sure where to watch. Even if New Wave Of Classic Rock isn’t your thing, these guys will bring a smile to your face and have you clapping along in no time. You have to wonder where they get the energy to run around the whole time but it’s the fact that they never miss a beat the whole time that’s really impressive. Playing hits such as “A Strange Woman”, “Breathe” and new track “Grind’, the crowd are taking in every second of this set. There is of course one trick at every Daxx & Roxane show that you don’t want to miss and it’s the incredible jump performed by guitarists Cal Wymann and Simon Golaz over one during “Wrong Side”. Even if you know it’s coming, it’s still an impressive sight to see as they continue playing throughout it. Another highlight of the set is during “Fast Lane” which sees Golaz swapping places with drummer, Luca Senaldi, seamlessly to play himself for a few seconds and later climbing up into the kit himself with some extreme balancing skills. Both the band and crowd are enjoying themselves so much that the guys even manage to slip in one extra track at the end with “Hard Rockin’ Man” to try to satisfy that need for more. These guys aren’t just a support band but a highly energetic party band on the rise!

With a black stage, the recording of “I Remember Now” plays as the band stands in the darkness. As soon as the beginning to “Anarchy-X” starts, the lights come up and the band comes right to the front of the stage to play the track. Stepping back ready for Geoff Tate to go straight into “Revolution Calling” the crowd cheered ready to hear him sing. The busy crowd is quick to sing along, and Tate often encourages them to sing. Watching him perform the songs is something else as he throws himself into each word and genuinely performs the story. His voice has clearly stood the test of time but the advantage of seeing it performed live is seeing the sheer passion Tate has for these tracks all these years later When not performing, he is encouraging his band during their solos and the instrumental parts showing a genuine affection for each of them and awe for their talent. I don’t need to go through every track played as anyone familiar with the album will know each part of the story. What’s incredible is how relevant the themes in this conception album are even 35 years later. It’s definitely one of those albums which even if you’re not a huge Queensryche fan, you should listen to this album fully. As we get halfway through the album, it’s time to meet Sister Mary and as with the last tour of this album, it’s Tate’s daughter Emily who performs this part. At the start of the track, “Suite Sister Mary” Geoff shows intense emotion as continues his fully immersed performance of the story. Emily takes to the stage and plays her part to perfection. The duo together is quite the sight and it is like watching a theatre performance the way that they both throw themselves into the parts. Throughout the band have a steady presence but do step back to allow the pair to take centre stage. After this, Geoff takes a slight pause to speak to the crowd for the first time of the night. It’s a very brief chat as he asks the crowd shall we keep going which is met with a responding yes! Going into “The Needle Lies” the band step back forward continuing as they were before taking the spotlight for those instrumental parts of the song. Tate is happy to let them take centre stage and once again encourages them. As we head towards the end of the album, his performance escalates into the emotions of this part of the story. The whole while the crowd is singing along and cheering, clearly having the time of their lives. The album does however need to come to its dramatic conclusion with “Eyes of a Stranger”. Just because we’ve reached the end doesn’t mean the night has to end though as Tate and the band perform a few Queensryche classics including “Silent Lucidity” and “Jet City Woman” before finally closing on “Queen of the Ryche”. It’s been an incredible night that many fans won’t forget in a hurry. It’s an absolute privilege to watch Geoff Tate perform and watch the passion that he still has for this music all these years later. Having seen him for the third time, I’m not tired of it and hoping for a 4th time, maybe with a 40th anniversary tour??

LIVE REVIEW: Geoff Tate: Operation Mindcrime – Melbourne, February 1st 2020

Croxton - melbourne, australia.

3 February 2020 Scotty Rock

At a jam packed Croxton Bandroom, Geoff Tate and his band delivered a stellar set of the iconic Queensryche album Operation: Mindcrime, from front to back.

Espionage and Black Majesty delivered their old school metal, but it was clear this would be a tough opening slot, when you are competing with a crowd who’s anticipation for tonight would have been building for weeks, even months.

After having been on the road celebrating the 30 year anniversary of the album for the best part of 2 years, tonight was the final date on this tour.  So after two years touring the album, you’d expect a pretty tight and kick-ass set, and that’s indeed what was delivered.  Geoff Tate, the man, the voice was in fine form, with that legendary vocal range on full display.

Playing the role of the protagonist Nikki, Tate brought a sense of showmanship to the performance, playing out some of those pivotal lyrical moments in songs such as Revolution Calling, Operation: Mindcrime, Speak.  From the outset, the crowd fed off the energy from the band on stage and threw it back in spades.  The band of merry Scots, Irish and English lads held their own delivering the intricate playing that this album is known for.  Queensryche or no Queensryche, when it’s all said and done, it’s Geoff Tate’s performance and vocals that I came to witness.  Making it a family affair, his daughter Emily played the part of Suite Sister Mary and of course, that original performance from Pamela Moore is always going to be hard to match live.

The bonus for tonight was also getting four tracks as an encore from the Empire album.  Best I Can was performed in blistering fashion, the crowds vocals well and truly warmed up, with the brute force of the crowd gang vocals of “…and I won’t let go”  even taking Tate by surprise.  Silent Lucidity, introduced by Tate as the song “that I’ve been told  over the years people have been married to, buried to, born to and made to” was magical.  Empire followed and the crowd wanted Jet City Woman and they got it, to close out the set.

We came to this show knowing what we were going to get – the album front to back, so this review needs to not sweat on the finer details.  For me, I was expecting greatness, but this exceeded expectations.  So much so, I even relived the album by listening to it in it’s entirety on the drive home.    A legendary performance of one of the greatest metal albums of all-time, by an all-time legendary vocalist.  This will be one of the years most talked about gigs, no doubt.

Operation: Mindcrime Concert Review – The Evolution of Geoff Tate…

March 10, 2016 by AW Leave a Comment

Operation Mindcrime - The Chance - Poughkeepsie, NY - 3-5-16

By Adam Waldman

Nostalgia has a way of making us all long for days gone by.  The passage of time tends to enhance memories in such a way that the present has an almost impossibly high standard to compete against.  Like dominant athletes, Geoff Tate set the bar so high for himself years ago, that today, he is often times judged against unrealistic standards (at least in the eyes of the nostalgia crowd).

It certainly doesn’t help matters that his parting with Queensryche ended up in a public battle that, sadly, left fans choosing sides between the two factions as if they were children of divorce choosing between parents.

Those who cling to nostalgic memories of the Queensryche of yesteryear, tend to mistakenly dismiss Tate because he no longer spends most of his time in the upper register that left jaws dropping back in the day.

At a recent show at The Chance in Poughkeepsie, NY, Tate proved that the voice that mesmerized a generation of fans still exists, especially with the songs from the Rage For Order and Operation: Mindcrime albums.  However, as is the case with every dominant athlete, Tate has evolved through the years, writing and performing songs that play to his strengths.  To put it in baseball terms, Tate doesn’t rely upon blowing people away with a 95 mph fastball these days, but he is still one of the best in the game.  And, he has surrounded himself with some outstanding teammates (his band), which only served to make the live experience of Operation: Mindcrime something to behold.

Anchored by longtime lead guitarist Kelly Gray, Operation: Mindcrime’s touring band is a powerful unit.  Featuring Scott Moughton (rhythm guitar), Randy Gane (keyboards), Tim Fernley (bass) and drummer Simon Wright (AC/DC, DIO), the band captures the essence of classic Queensryche…and beyond.

Those who think of Operation: Mindcrime as a “poor man’s Queensryche,” would be dead wrong in their assessment.  This band is a force to be reckoned with, and more unique than you might expect.  Their distinctive style was particularly evident during the acoustic portion of the show, and during the original songs that were performed from The Key (Operation: Mindcrime’s debut album).

It’s understandable why the crowd favorites were the Queensryche hits, but there was something special going on when Operation: Mindcrime played original songs, because they stood on their own with no basis for comparison.  You could almost sense the freedom of expression coming from the band, and of course, from Tate as well.

Truth be told, as much as I love hearing Tate perform Queensryche songs, I’m actually looking forward to a time when there are more Operation: Mindcrime songs in the set.  If you had somehow never heard of Queensryche, and just witnessed the songs from The Key , you would be left raving about this new band that you got to see in a club.  In fact, you’d probably be wondering how a band with a sound this big wasn’t playing larger venues.

My history with Tate goes back to 1984 when I saw Queensryche open for Kiss in support of The Warning .  Having seen him perform several times since then, it’s hard to think of a show when he looked to be enjoying himself as much as he did with his new band.  With no elaborate stage show to adhere to, there was more of a freeform feeling to the experience.  Whereas the Tate of old was mostly known for dazzling audiences with the high notes, one of the most notable elements of his performance this time around was his ability to do the same with charismatic low notes, and lighthearted banter between songs.

For those who are still stuck in the ‘80s, seeing Operation: Mindcrime in a live setting does not specifically cater to your nostalgic memories.  But for those who believe that there is more to Tate’s brilliance than vocal gymnastics, you will be in for a treat from an amazing band that is inexplicably underrated.

Geoff Tate’s post-Queensrÿche releases haven’t generated the career momentum he was hoping for, and that’s clear by the bottom-of-the-rung venues his band are set to perform in on their upcoming UK tour. Indeed, the two previous albums released under his Operation: Mindcrime moniker (essentially Tate with countless guest musicians) have been frustratingly lethargic. Perhaps predictably, the music on The New Reality is patchy. My Eyes hints at past triumphs, with assertive melodies and inventive vocal lines only hindered by a shackling production. There’s even a Kashmir vibe to All For What , which at least proves Operation: Mindcrime retain some ambition. Yet for all these relative, fleeting high points, the remainder of the album limps along painfully. The tired riff and off-kilter guitar on Wake Me Up makes you wonder if Vim Fuego of Bad News has been drafted in to the roster of guest musicians. The Fear is padded out with a bizarre drum solo, replete with David Bowie tribute-act vocals. The album ironically ends with a run-of-the-mill song entitled The Same Old Story , which provides a perfect epitaph to this trilogy of awkward disappointment.

GEOFF TATE Announces The Addition Of More ‘Operation: Mindcrime’ 30th-Anniversary U.S. Tour Dates

geoff tate operation mindcrime tour review

Original  QUEENSRŸCHE  singer  Geoff Tate and his band,  OPERATION: MINDCRIME  announced they will celebrate the 30th anniversary of the landmark concept album  Operation: Mindcrime , by performing the platinum-selling 1988’s album from beginning to end in its entirety, along with a set full of greatest hits including  “Silent Lucidity”   and  “Jet City Woman” during a US Tour, and today more dates have been added. The  Mindcrime  set will cover all fifteen songs from the album including such fan favorites as  “Revolution Calling” ,   “Operation: Mindcrime” ,  “I Don’t Believe In Love”  and the closing track,  “Eyes Of A Stranger” . As fans might remember,  Geoff  performed the album in its entirety on tour in 2013 to celebrate its 25th anniversary.

Back in 2006,  Geoff  and his then current  QUEENSRŸCHE  bandmates brought the theatrical interpretation of the  Mindcrime  saga to audiences all over the world. In October of that year, an epic performance was filmed and recorded, resulting in  Mindcrime At The Moore , an album/DVD set released in July of 2007 that would debut at #1 on the Billboard Music DVD chart. It would mark the band’s first #1 chart debut, quickly selling over 50,000 units, achieving gold status.

Geoff ‘s own band  OPERATION: MINDCRIME  has released three albums in three years as part of a trilogy:  The Key  (September 2015),  Resurrection  (September 2016) and  The New Reality  (December 2017). The band currently on tour features  Kieran Robertson  from Scotland on guitar,  Bruno Sa  from Brazil on keyboards,  Jack Ross  from Scotland on bass,  Scott Moughton  from Canada on guitar,  Josh Watts  from England on drums and  Geoff Tate ‘s daughter  Emily , who will be singing the parts of  Sister Mary . She’s also in the band,  TIL DEATH DO US PART , who are special guests on this tour.

The forthcoming U.S. tour comes hot on the heels of the band’s European trek that began earlier this year, hitting venues in such countries as Austria, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Netherlands, Poland, Slovakia, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. Event details.

Geoff Tate, the Grammy-nominated artist and creative force behind progressive metal band Queensryche, boasts multi-platinum success with over 20 million albums sold worldwide. Celebrated for his remarkable vocals, Tate's influence extends to modern artists. Queensryche, led by Tate, is renowned for their socially conscious music blending intricate lyrics and high-energy melodies. Notably, their first three albums achieved gold status, including the acclaimed "Operation: Mindcrime" (1988), compared to iconic works like The Who's "Tommy" and Pink Floyd's "The Wall."

Tate's achievements span Grammy nominations, chart-topping hits like "Silent Lucidity," and performing the Grammy-nominated song at the Awards with an orchestra. His journey encompasses successful solo projects and the ambitious trilogy "The Key" (2015), "Resurrection" (2016), and "The New Reality" (2017). Geoff Tate and the current Operation: Mindcrime lineup celebrated "Operation: Mindcrime's" 30th Anniversary with an electrifying tour, highlighting their timeless music.

Adrian Vandenberg's prolific career, spanning iconic bands and solo projects, has shaped his musical journey. Exploding out of The Netherlands and onto the global scene with 1982’s self-titled Vandenberg , the Dutch phenomenon notched an international hit in the form of “Burning Heart,” paving the way for seminal releases such as Heading For A Storm [1983] and Alibi [1985]. The band canvased the United States, Europe, and Japan alongside Ozzy Osbourne, Kiss, Rush, Scorpions, Michael Schenker, and many others. Sought out to join Whitesnake, Adrian famously ripped the legendary lead on the 1987 recording of the #1 smash “Here I Go Again,” which adorned the 8x-platinum Whitesnake and ended up touring the world’s largest arenas for a year-and-a-half when the 1987 album went through the roof in terms of sales. He co-wrote the entirety of 1989’s platinum Slip of the Tongue and spent the ensuing tour sharing axe duties with none other than Steve Vai. In addition to playing guitar on and cowriting Restless Heart from David Coverdale & Whitesnake, he performed hundreds of shows as part of the band for some twelve years.

Vandenberg and Mascot Records are thrilled to announce the global release of their new studio album "SIN" on August 25. The album "SIN" captures the essence of Vandenberg's evolution, recorded in Holland and Los Angeles. The album's scorching single "House On Fire" showcases the fusion of foot-tapping groove and darker lyrical undertones.

The complete track listing includes a compelling array of songs, available in Green LP, CD, and Digital formats. Adrian Vandenberg and the band look forward to sharing their vibrant music with fans, creating a sonic journey that resonates with listeners worldwide. Vandenberg's "SIN" promises to be a vibrant and dynamic addition to their legendary discography.

GEOFF TATE Announces More 'Operation: Mindcrime' 30th-Anniversary Shows

In association with Glasgow-based Shock City Productions , ex- QUEENSRŸCHE frontman Geoff Tate has announced a return to U.K. stages this November with stops including Newcastle, Aberdeen, Evesham and Leeds.

Up-and-coming band TILL DEATH DO US PART , featuring Geoff 's daughter Emily on vocals, has been announced as support for all the shows, a full list of which can be seen below.

Only last year, Geoff and his band began an extensive tour of Europe to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the classic QUEENSRŸCHE album "Operation: Mindcrime" , with four of the dates completely selling out. This second leg of the tour sees Geoff and his band return to U.K. stages for a very special show in cities that missed out on the 30th-anniversary "Operation: Mindcrime" shows last year.

After being fired from QUEENSRŸCHE in 2012, Geoff filed a lawsuit against the remaining members of the band, and, following a lengthy court battle, he was granted the exclusive performance rights to both "Operation: Mindcrime" and "Operation: Mindcrime II" .

Far from being put down by the off-stage events, Geoff has re-invented himself with his OPERATION: MINDCRIME bandmates going on to produce three inter-connected albums — "The Key" in 2015, followed by "Resurrection" in 2016 and the final piece of the puzzle, "The New Reality" , which was released in 2017. All three albums are part of a concept album trilogy involving virtual currencies, Internet banking and stock trading, and all were met with largely positive reviews.

Geoff Tate U.K. tour dates:

Nov. 21 - The Assembly, Aberdeen Nov. 22 - Bannermans Bar, Edinburgh Nov. 23 - The Waterloo Music Bar, Blackpool Nov. 24 - Winter Storm, Troon Nov. 26 - Trillians Newcastle Nov. 27 - Fibbers: Live Music Venue, York Nov. 28 - The Iron Road, Evesham Nov. 29 - Eleven, Stoke Nov. 30 - Muni Arts Centre, Pontypridd (Greatest Hits Set) Nov. 01 - The Underworld Camden, London Dec. 03 - Brudenell Social Club, Leeds Dec. 04 - The Waterfront, Norwich Dec. 05 - O'Rileys, Hull

"Operation: Mindcrime" is the third studio album of eleven that Geoff recorded with QUEENSRŸCHE . The concept album and rock opera is a story following Nikki , a recovering drug addict, who becomes disillusioned with the corrupt society of his time and becomes involved in a revolutionary group, acting as an assassin of political leaders. The certified platinum album was rated by Kerrang! as one of heavy metal's top 100 albums of all time.

QUEENSRŸCHE played "Operation: Mindcrime" in its entirety during the band's 1990 tour to promote the "Empire" album. The performance featured video, animation and guest singer Pamela Moore as the character Sister Mary .

Tate was replaced in QUEENSRŸCHE by former CRIMSON GLORY singer Todd La Torre .

  1. Gig Review

Review by Paddy Gallagher for MPM. The October Bank Holiday Weekend 2023 saw a busy line up of gigs in Belfast but the first one on my radar was the return of one of the iconic voices of Heavy Metal bringing a setlist celebrating the 35 th Anniversary of Queensrÿche's "Operation: Mindcrime", an album that figures highly in many esteems and is one of the quintessential Prog Metal concept ...

  3. LIVE REVIEW: Geoff Tate: Operation Mindcrime

Geoff Tate, the man, the voice was in fine form, with that legendary vocal range on full display. 4. Operation: Mindcrime Concert Review

Like dominant athletes, Geoff Tate set the bar so high for himself years ago, that today, he is often times judged against unrealistic standards (at least in the eyes of the nostalgia crowd). It certainly doesn't help matters that his parting with Queensryche ended up in a public battle that, sadly, left fans choosing sides between the two ...

  15. Operation: Mindcrime
