Hailing from Eskilstuna, Sweden, Kent is a Swedish indie-pop act that became one of the country's biggest bands of the 90s.

Kent were formed after singer/songwriter Joakim Berg met guitarist Sami Sirvo whilst at school, deciding to start a band alone with drummer Markus Mustonen, bassist Martin Skold and guitarist Martin Roos. After developing their sound and bonding as musicians, they signed to BMG Sweden and their sub-label RCA, releasing their debut single, "Nar Dert Blaser Pa Manen" in 1994. The single remained relatively unnoticed, with their eponymous debut album also released to little fanfare in April 1995. Kent embarked on extensive tours for the rest of the year in promotion of the album, with Roos leaving band after, being replaced by Harri Manty.

It was with their follow-up that Kent were to find success, with the lead single "Kram (Sa Nara Far Ingen Ga) becoming an instant hit, propelling their 1996 album "Verkligen" to wide acclaim and popularity. The album displayed a change in direction for the band, creating a melancholic sound in the same vein as Radiohead. The band went back on the road on a large tour except this time, the venues were sold out, with the success of their second record building a large fan base.

Bolstered by two hit singles in 1997, "Gravitation" and "Om Du Var Har," the band went from strength to strength with their third album, "Isola," which went straight to number one on the Swedish album chart. The video for "Gravitation" also won a Grammy Award for best video. The band also recorded an English-language version of "Isola," realised in England in 1998.

The band continued to make popular albums, with "Vapen & Ammunition" (2002) selling 500,000 copies in Scandinavia alone. Two further albums, "Du & Jag Döden" (2005) and "Tillbaka Till Samtiden" cemented Kent's position in the Swedish music scene, as one of the most popular indie-pop acts. As a whole, they have released eleven albums, winning 20 Swedish Grammy Awards in total.

Live reviews

I just got back from seeing Kent at a live concert and I have got to say, what a show! Kent is a Swedish Rock/Pop band that is well known throughout the world. Kent is a very unique band and they are another one of those genre mashing bands that really keeps things interesting and unique. The venue that Kent played at was pretty nice, there was plenty of room, adequate lighting and the sound equipment looked very good. Surprisingly, Kent didn’t come out wearing anything crazy which I kind of expected since their genres are kind of a blend. The center stage was filled with many decorations and props that really made the experience much better. The crowd was really receptive to whatever Kent had to say and play, everyone seemed very into the music. The crowd was swaying back and forth and it seemed like everyone was just having a good time rocking and rolling to the music. My overall experience was very fun and beneficial. I met many new people that I could easily call friends now and I just had a blast listening to Kent’s music. I could just feel the emotion and energy based of off Kent’s actions on the stage and I feel myself getting pumped to do something.

Report as inappropriate

There has never been much explanation Swedish pop/rock outfit Kent have taken their namesake from one of England's southern counties. Despite the confusing band name, one thing that is far from confusing is the bold synth pop inspired rock sounds that this quartet has created since their incarnation back in the mid 90s.

They have enjoyed huge amounts of radio play in their home country and the fact they have sold over three million albums has taken them around the globe numerous times. It would seem as though the band always had this level of success in mind as the four musicians seem totally comfortable on the huge stages and handle the even huger crowds with a refreshing ease. They keep everybody engaged and involved as they perform the very finest selection of their discography whilst displaying great musicianship and real talent in the translation from record to stage show. Kent truly are a credit to the Scandinavian rock scene.

Visuals were amazing but most of the tracks relied heavily on playback of the instruments even some of the vocals at times which made it hard to feel the presence of the band on stage.

Discover more in kent, about the kent stage.

After 25 years as one of Scandinavias biggest, most renowned and most influential rock bands, Kent decided to end their successful career on a high. 2016 would be their last year as a band, with a last album, a greatest hits compilation and a huge final tour. Always doing things their own way, they decided that their ending should be a grand as their career, and the band contacted Indio to help them craft their funeral.

Indio stepped on board as creative partners and Adam Berg took the helm as Creative Director for the project. To begin with the band wanted to create a farewell video for the fans showcasing the bands lifespan and announce the ending. “Då Som Nu För Alltid” was secretly produced by Indio and shot across Sweden by Indios Mattias Montero, Adam Berg and team.

The teaser was a funeral march through a snowy stockholm, visiting themes and people from the bands long history, involving tigers, huskies, horses, airplanes and over 100 extras parading through Stockholm with drums and flags. The team shot during early mornings and late night’s to avoid attention and to keep the production under the radar. The video’s true intention was kept secret during the whole production and neither cast nor crew knew that the film would announce the bands break-up until actual release.

The video premiered late Sunday night on march 13th 2016 and on the day of release it got 1,5 million views and caused an unprecedented outcry from fans around the world as the reality sank in that the band was calling it quits.

INDIO then continued the work with the band during that final year, producing several videos and also masterminding and producing all the visuals and backdrops for the tour.

Indio director Joanna Nordahl wrote the idea of “Den Vänstra Stranden” in close conversations with the band’s lead singer & songwriter Joakim Berg. Production took place in a spring blooming Paris. That year she also directed videos for “Vi Är För Alltid” and the final video from the band, “Den Sista Sången”. Den sista sången was shot during the tour and compiled fan sections with never seen before footage behind the scenes from the tour.

To further bring the audience into the Kent world at the concerts Indio together with Kent’s management investigated the idea of creating an app for the tour to give fans the possibility to be part of the performance during the tour. Indio arranged a deal between the band with major telecom operator 3.

Indio presented the concept and features for 3 who through communications agency Passion Lab developed an mobile application for iOS and Android where the audience phones could be used as lighting effects during certain numbers and song. An impressive effect when 43.000 peoples phones lit up at the Tele2 arena in Stockholm.

Indio are proud to have been a part in Kents final year and are sad to see them go. In the words of Kent “Tack som Fan!”

As work was going on with music videos and fans were still reeling from the news of the bands farewell. Indio started work on the tour visuals. The vision for the tour was to create a world of its own where the bands music, aesthetics and visuals should blend into a powerful audio visual experience, drawing force from the bands music and lyrics while powerful visuals would wash over the audience from huge LED screens behind the band. Adam Berg was the creative director and supervisor for the visuals and together with Indio directors Joanna Nordahl & Philippe Templeman they set forth to create the content needed to cover the two hour long concerts. A team of over 60 people and the vfx companies Mathematic, Chimney Pot, Good Motion and Media Monks worked for several months on the many elements combining studio footage, vfx shots and live footage into a seamlessly flowing visual experience. Linking the images to the music and the stage lights. The show started with a countdown of a ghost drummer and ended with a spectral choice of children joining the band on stage to sing the final song. The impact was impressive and the shows were praised by media and fans as a groundbreaking concert experience. The tour 28 shows spanning Scandinavia sold out in 13 minutes and was seen by over 290.000 people. The final three shows in Stockholm each had 43.000 people in the audience, an impressive feat by any standard.

Kent Burnside was born into the blues.

'Too wild to comprehend.' Grand Ole Opry outfits worn by The Shootouts make rock hall

kent band tour

  • Part of the outfits worn by The Shootouts, a classic country band with Stark County ties, will be exhibited at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
  • Jen Boyne, a clothing designer based in Nova Scotia, created the outfits worn by The Shootouts for their Grand Ole Opry debut.
  • The attire will be displayed at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in an exhibit honoring musical acts from Northeast Ohio.

Part of the outfits worn by The Shootouts at their Grand Ole Opry debut last year will be exhibited at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland. Ryan Humbert, lead singer for The Shootouts, is a North Canton resident.

The Shootouts debuted at the Grand Ole Opry last year in style.

Wearing handmade outfits, splashed with vibrant hues of yellow, orange, purple and pink, the Americana and honky-tonk band with ties to Stark County was playing music from a new album.

But that wasn't the last time the attire would take center stage. Created by Jen Boyne, a designer from Nova Scotia, a portion of the outfits will be showcased at the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame in the "Cleveland Rocks" exhibit starting this week and running through 2025.

The exhibit includes artifacts from Chrissie Hynde of The Pretenders, The Black Keys, Devo, Michael Stanley, Screamin’ Jay Hawkins, the Raspberries and others.

"It's an incredible honor to be included in an exhibit highlighting notable musicians from Northeast Ohio," said Ryan Humbert, a North Canton resident and lead singer and guitarist for the band. "To even be mentioned in the same breath as some of our heroes is truly humbling."

Amanda Pecsenye, director of curatorial affairs at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, said that despite being a relatively new group, The Shootouts "have cemented their place in the legacy of Northeast Ohio with their critically acclaimed albums and lauded performances at the historic Grand Ole Opry."

She added that "the custom western wear the band provided is an eye-catching addition to the exhibit."

From Nova Scotia to Nashville to the rock hall

So how did a western swing band from Northeast Ohio connect with a clothing designer from the Canadian Province of Nova Scotia?

"She's good at what she does and she's a fan of the band," Humbert explained. "She said, 'I'd love to work on something for you.'"

Behind the music Bass player for The Shootouts takes musical journey to Nashville

Boyne said she first reached out to Humbert through Instagram about two years ago.

"We had a great connection from the beginning," she said. "I think we were just waiting for an excuse to work together."

"Ryan had a pretty clear vision of what he wanted for the band," Boyne said. "Because the shirts were debuting on the Opry stage , we wanted them to be bold and to be noticed. I have a real connection with color.

"I wanted the shirts to have a classic and authentic appearance. That was  important."

Details include flowers and a deep golden yellow yoke, as well as piping, fringe and intricate stitching.

"I wanted to change the traditional western shirt design a little bit but not so much that it was super noticeable," Boyne said.

Humbert sketched out a rough design idea and sent it to Boyne.

"She took that, improved upon it, and blew us away," he said. "They are just beautiful, high-quality garments."

The ensembles echo the colors of the cover for the band's third album, "Stampede," Humbert noted.

"Stampede" reached No. 4 last year on the Americana Music Association Radio Album Chart, spending 13 weeks in the top 10. The Shootouts also were nominated for Best Honky Tonk Group at the 2023 and 2024  Ameripolitan Music Awards .

The Shootouts will be performing in Kent and Hartville

The Shootouts have now performed at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville four times − February, July and December last year, and this past January. The band also features Emily Bates, harmony vocals and acoustic guitar; Brian Poston, lead guitar; Kevin McManus, bass and harmony vocals; and Mark Butto, drums.

The band's next Grand Ole Opry performance is scheduled for July 6. Tickets, starting at $53, can be purchased at https://www.opry.com/artists/the-shootouts . More bands will be announced for the 7 p.m. show.

The Shootouts are also headlining the American Roots Festival in Kent and performing at 7 p.m. Friday at The Kent Stage. Doors open at 6:30 pm. Free tickets are available at https://kentstage.org/ .

The group also will be performing at 7 p.m. May 23 at the Hartville Kitchen Restaurant, 1015 Edison St. NW, part of the Hartville MarketPlace. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.

Tickets for the Hartville concert cost $30 to $40 and can be purchased at https://hartvillekitchen.com/events/ . The restaurant can be reached at 330-877-9353.

'They really are a work of art.'

Humbert said the custom outfits almost didn't arrive in time for their inaugural show on the Opry stage.

"(Boyne) shipped them into the country and they got stuck in customs," he said. "We had them shipped directly to Nashville and we got them two days before our debut at the Grand Ole Opry."

Seeing the outfits and touching them for the first time was special, Humbert recalled.

"The attention to detail, the custom embroidery and rhinestones, and the quality of the work is just incredible," he said. "Everyone who has seen them just loves them. They really are a work of art."

Shootouts' outfit designer on rock hall: 'It's almost too wild to comprehend.'

Boyne designs clothes under J. Boyne Western Wear , based in Bedford, Nova Scotia.

"I go to bed every night excited to wake up and get back to work in the morning," she said.

"My dream is fulfilled on a daily basis," Boyne said. "But the even cooler part is that I work for clients who are fulfilling their dreams."

"I am so beyond grateful to Ryan and The Shootouts for including me in their journey," she said. "They were a joy to work with. “

Seeing some of her work exhibited in the rock hall is overwhelming, Boyne said.

"It doesn’t even seem real," she said. "It’s almost too wild to comprehend."
