Napier cruise port

Welcome to the Napier cruise port guide. Napier is the one of the highlights in sunny Hawke’s bay. Check our Napier cruise port guide underneath to see where the ship is going to dock and what the best way is to get around.

Napier cruise port guide: docked

Cruise ships dock in the seaport of Napier. This is large container port Walking in prohibited in port. The only way to get out of the port is by your ship’s shore excursion bus or to take the complimentary shuttle bus from the cruise dock to the city center.

Napier’s cruise port is only about 2 km / 1 mile away from the city center and the shuttle bus service from the cruise port to the city will only take a few minutes.

Welcome to the port of Napier

Shuttle bus

There is no walking allowed in the port area, so there are only two ways to get out of Napier’s port: by one of the ship’s shore excursions busses or the shuttle bus. Most of the times Napier provides a complimentary shuttle bus service from the cruise dock to the city center. There are usually a couple of stops along the way. The main stop is the tourist information center on Marine Parade, which is right in the center of town. This is where you will find the main street, the promenade, local tour operators, tourist information and lots more.

Often the shuttle busses are also able to make a few additional stops. They might be kind enough to make a stop for you at the National Aquarium, the Museum (MTG) and the exit of the port. Check and verify all this information with your cruise line.

Tourist information

Sometimes there might be a representative of the tourist information available at the dock to hand out maps and information, but if there is not you simply hop on the shuttle bus and it will get you straight to their visitors center. This facility offers great information on Napier, but also other ports of call in New Zealand that might be on your itinerary. Alternatively they also have a little shop where you can buy some local products.

Shore excursions

The tourist information, called the Napier i-SITE Visitor Information centre, provides local shore excursions for cruise passengers. If you take the shuttle bus from the cruise dock to the tourist information you can simply walk in, see what they have available for you and book it on the spot. All the cruise tours leave from the tourist information centre. There are also other local tour operators that you will find around the tourist information that are looking for business as well. Spend some time checking out what is available before you make a decision. There is usually a nice variety of tours available.

Bicycle rental

Napier is a perfect place to get active and enjoy a bike ride. There are few places where you can rent a bike. One of the places is right across the street from the tourist information centre where the shuttle bus will drop you off. Ask for a suggested route so you are sure you are going to see the best when you are and about. Please keep in mind New Zealand drives on the left!

Public transportation

The local bus stop is on Dalton Street in the city center. Find out more information about routes and times on http://trackabus.co.nz/napierhastings/m/where/index?id=1_25002001

There are usually no or perhaps just a couple of taxis at Napier’s tourist information centre. Most people don’t utilise the taxis as a way to tour around because they are simply very expensive. If you do need one to take you somewhere, than please know the official taxi stand is on Clive Square which is about 3 blocks from where the shuttle bus (tourist information stop) lets you off. Our advice is to check if there are any taxis waiting for you at the shuttle bus stop, if not, ask the tourist information if they would call you one of to point you into the direction of Clive Square where their official taxi stand is.

Finding a proper WiFi connection in Napier will be no problem. The cruise port doesn’t provide any, but the town centre has plenty of free Wifi spots. One of the most convenient places is right but the shuttle bus drop off location. You will see there is a free hotspot available there. Additionally you will also see plenty of cafe’s and restaurants, like the Starbucks across the street from the shuttle bus drop off location, where you are able to get online.

Napier’s boardwalk

The town of Napier has a beach that stretches all the way from the cruise port to the southern parts of town. Along the waterline you will find a beautiful boardwalk with so many things to see and do. Walking it from beginning to get end will take you to the Ocean Spa, Conference Centre, Floral Clock, Tom Parker fountain, Viewing platform, Sound Shell & Colonnade, Tourist information centre, Mini Golf course, the Sunken Gardens, the Reef Garden, a skate board park, playground, Millennium Sculpture and the National Aquarium and Kiwi House.

The beach stretches all the way along the city center of Napier. It is great to have seat somewhere and go people watching, because there is simply so much activity around here. It is not a beach that is very suitable for swimming or water-sports. Most people who want to go for a swim simply visit one of the salt water pools that you will find on the boardwalk next to the beach.

Sightseeing:

Napier was leveled by an earthquake in 1931, and the entire city was rebuilt in the Art Deco style.

Napier is a very small town with only a couple of main streets.

Supported by a Mediterranean climate and over 2,200 hours of sunshine a year this popular year-round destination boasts a vibrant cafe culture amongst the splendor of the Art Deco buildings. Around 30 cafes are within walking distance of the central city area, while Ahuriri, just over Bluff Hill, is home to a further cluster of up-market establishments.

Napier oozes fun and adventure and a visit to the attractions of Marine Parade is a must. Marine Parade overlooks the Pacific Ocean and out towards Cape Kidnappers, home to the worlds largest mainland gannet colony.

Par 2 - MiniGolf is perfectly located on Marine Parade, "by the Soundshell, beside the Sea". Two 18 hole MiniGolf courses are designed both for fun and for those with a competitive edge. With panoramic views of Hawke Bay and the Pacific Ocean, and Napier's wonderful Art Deco architecture alongside, the setting is spectacular for a game (or two) of miniature golf.

A full day can be taken visiting Ocean Spa hot pools and swimming complex, the Hawkes Bay Museum , the National Aquarium of New Zealand .

A landmark of Napier is Bluff Hill , which is home for many Napier residents and provides views of the town beaches of Perfume Point and Westshore, past the newly upgraded airport and out towards Whirinaki. Bluff Hill also overlooks the Port of Napier, one of New Zealands busiest ports, transporting timber, local fruit and meat products to worldwide destinations.

Tours Excursions Transportation:

step-by-step guide to visiting Napier on a Cruise Ship

step-by-step guide to visiting Napier on a Cruise Ship

For passengers on cruise ships touring new zealand, the port town of napier is the highest ranked destination, according to end-of-cruise survey results for the 2014/15 season revealed at the recent cruise new zealand annual conference..

Napier continues to receive top marks out of New Zealand ports and be rated as ‘very welcoming’ by passengers states a recent article in local newspaper Hawke’s Bay Today confirming its status as one of the best cruise ports in NZ. Passengers’ expectations continue to be exceeded as they enjoy the warm hospitality of the people of Napier City and the wider Hawke’s Bay region, Napier i-Site Visitors Centre and local tour operators. Just over 98,000 passengers disembarked at the Port of Napier in the 2014/15 summer season with most hailing from Australia, United Kingdom, United States, New Zealand, Germany and China. Many passengers now eschew the shore excursions offered onboard their ship for more competitively priced tours with local operators available in most ports. Napier i-Site, in conjunction with local operators, have been particularly successful in offering a wide range of alternatives to those offered on the ships in recent years. Here’s a step-by-step guide to getting the best value from your cruise ship visit to Napier;

1. Take the free shuttle from the ship directly to the Napier i-Site Visitor Centre.

Unlike some ports visited, Napier has a continuous (usually about every 10 minutes) and Free return shuttle service to and from the Visitor Centre on beautiful Marine Parade, right in the middle of town. Just jump on and a quick 5 minute ride will deliver you to the hub of local tour operations.

2. Check out the variety of tours and activities on display on the forecourt.

The Napier i-Site Visitor Centre – to give it’s full name – has created a mini-market atmosphere on its forecourt. As you arrive on your shuttle bus you’ll see lots of colourful display stands arranged along a series of tables in front of the Visitor Centre. Each stand represents a local tour or activity operator who can tell you all about what they have to offer that day. You’ll be talking to the actual people who create and conduct the tours. This allows you to ‘browse’ the various displays and ask any questions you want to before making a much more informed decision.

3. Book your tour or activity with the Visitor Centre staff inside.

Co-ordination of all tour bookings is controlled by the staff in the Visitor Centre itself. This provides assurance of service and security of payment to passengers. Once you’ve selected a tour, the operator taking the tour you pick will complete a sales slip for you to take inside to the Visitor Centre for booking and payment. At the counter inside the staff then issue you with a voucher to present at the beginning of your tour. It couldn’t be easier or more secure. However if you would like to skip this step it is also recommended to book ahead of time. Tours have been known to sell out on busy days –  Napier Cruise Tours

4. Present your tour voucher to the driver at the designated boarding area.

Next to the Visitor Centre building are a series of angle parks where touring vehicles are boarded. 15 minutes before your tour or activity is due to depart, present yourself to a representative of the tour company in this area and give them your voucher as you board the vehicle. and you’re off…..Have fun!! Top Tip: For the most enjoyable and enlightening tours of Napier and it’s stunning surrounding areas, look for the Bay Tours people in their bright Green shirts or pre-book one of their tours at the Bay Tours website. Our #1 rating on TripAdvisor reflects the quality of the tours and guides.

The voyages are thoughtfully curated to feature the most popular, and best-rated ports based on guest satisfaction and to introduce our guests to new hidden gems.  NCL's itineraries provide travelers with the ultimate cruising experience, allowing them to immerse themselves into each destination and wake up in a new fantastic location nearly every day.

The newly released season of sailings features several ships making their debut in new destinations, including Norwegian Sun visiting new ports in Asia for the first time, including Kyoto (Kobe), Japan; the all-new Norwegian Viva homeporting for the first time in Galveston, Texas for a series of Caribbean voyages; and much more.

Additional highlights from the new deployment include:

Just in time for travelers to admire the fall foliage, Norwegian Sun’s season in Asia will kick off in Japan on Nov. 3, 2025, on an 11-day open-jaw sailing starting from Tokyo to Incheon, South Korea, calling to Jeju (Jeju Island), South Korea and Kyoto (Kobe), Japan – both first time visits for the ship – as well as stops in several popular Japanese cities including Nagoya and Osaka. On Nov. 14, 2025, the ship will depart from Incheon, South Korea for the first time for another 11-day open-jaw voyage on its return to Tokyo with a similar itinerary that features a call to Hiroshima, Japan. From December 2025 through March 2026, Norwegian Sun will offer a selection of cruises between 11- and 15-days sailing through Southeast Asia with several embarkation ports for guests to choose from including Singapore; Laem Chabang, Thailand; and Keelung, Taiwan.

AUSTRALIA & NEW ZEALAND

Travelers searching for immersive itineraries to explore Australia and New Zealand can enjoy Norwegian Spirit’s open-jaw sailings to and from Sydney, Australia and Auckland, New Zealand between December 2025 and March 2026. Embarking and disembarking in different ports gives travelers the opportunity to extend their vacation onto land by planning pre- or post-cruise stays to fully dive into the local culture and destination. The vessel will offer 11 to 14-day voyages with most itineraries calling to guest favorite ports including Melbourne, Australia; and Napier and Dunedin, New Zealand. Select sailings will cruise by the magnificent New Zealand fjords – the Doubtful Sound, Milford Sound, and Dusky Sound – providing an unforgettable memory for NCL guests.

NCL has curated a selection of exotic and port-intensive Africa sailings for Norwegian Dawn starting November 2025 through March 2026 featuring multiple embarkation ports including Cape Town, South Africa; Port Louis, Mauritius; and Doha, Qatar. The season begins on Nov. 2, 2025, with a 21-day repositioning cruise from Barcelona, Spain to Cape Town, South Africa calling to sought-after destinations including Santa Maria, Cape Verde; Casablanca, Morocco; and Agadir, Morocco. Due to popular demand for more open-jaw voyages to start and end in Cape Town, South Africa and Port Louis, Mauritius, NCL is offering four 12-day sailings calling to the popular ports of Antsiranana, and Nosy Be, Madagascar, as well as an overnight stay in Richard’s Bay, South Africa, where guests can opt to explore the local wildlife by a safari tour, learn about South African history or enjoy a relaxing afternoon at the Aklantstrand Beach.

During Norwegian Viva's winter season, the vessel will offer guests seven-day roundtrip Western Caribbean itineraries to Cozumel, and Costa Maya, Mexico; Roatan, Honduras; as well as Harvest Caye, NCL's resort-style destination located in Southern Belize. On Jan. 10 and Jan. 24, 2026, Norwegian Viva will sail a 14-day Eastern Caribbean itinerary for cruisers searching for a longer warm-weather escape. For a similar and extended itinerary option, the ship will also offer two 14-day Southern Caribbean cruises on Feb. 1, and Feb. 22, 2026, where the ship will visit for the first time Puerto Limon, Costa Rica; Colon, Panama; and Cartagena, Colombia.

Homeporting for a second season in La Romana, Dominican Republic, Norwegian Sky is offering travelers a selection of seven, nine and 12-day roundtrip Southern Caribbean itineraries from December 2025 through April 2026 calling to a variety of picturesque ports including Oranjestad, Aruba; Kralendijk, Bonaire; Willemstad, Curaçao of the ABC islands and more. During the Jan. 5, 2026, nine-day sailing, Norwegian Sky will cruise to the southwestern coast of the Dominican Republic to make her debut in Cabo Rojo, offering guests a beautiful beach escape. These Caribbean cruises provide travelers worldwide the opportunity to enjoy these bucket-list destinations, as most visitors arriving to the Dominican Republic do not require a visa to enter the country.

SOUTH AMERICA

The South America itineraries begin with the transatlantic crossing from Lisbon, Portugal to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on Nov. 20, 2025, visiting Portugal, Cape Verde, and several cities in Brazil. Norwegian Star will then embark on a 17-day cruise from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on Dec. 4, 2025 calling to ports in Argentina, Uruguay, and Chile, and making its way to the South Pole as the vessel cruises by Paradise Bay and Elephant Island in Antarctica for guests to enjoy the views and wildlife from the comfort of their balcony or the ship's top deck before disembarking in Buenos Aires, Argentina. CAPE TOWN, South Africa (AP) — A U.S.-owned luxury cruise ship with more than 3,000 passengers and crew was allowed to dock Monday in the Indian Ocean island of Mauritius after being quarantined offshore for a day over fears of a possible cholera outbreak onboard, authorities said.

The Mauritius government cleared the Norwegian Dawn, which is owned and run by the Miami-based Norwegian Cruise Line company, to dock at the harbor in the capital, Port Louis, after health officials found no traces of cholera in tests conducted on the ship’s water.

Mauritius authorities blocked the ship from docking Sunday because 15 people onboard were ill with vomiting and diarrhea. The Mauritius Ports Authority said it took the decision “in order to avoid any health risks,” and sent officials onboard to collect samples to test.

The Mauritius government said the sick passengers who had been isolated after falling ill in fact had mild cases of the viral infection gastroenteritis.

Norwegian Cruise Line said in a statement that there were “a small number of guests experiencing mild symptoms of a stomach-related illness” and there were “no confirmed cases nor any evidence of cholera.”

This photo provided by Cole Brauer Ocean Racing shows Brauer as she became the first American woman to race nonstop around the world by herself when she arrived Thursday, March 7, 2024, in A Coruña, Spain. (James Tomlinson/Cole Brauer Ocean Racing via AP)

The Mauritius government “required testing in an overabundance of caution,” it added.

Several countries in mainland southern African have experienced serious outbreaks of cholera over the last year, possibly leading to the concern from authorities in Mauritius, an island nation of about 1.2 million people off the east coast of Africa that’s a popular tourist destination.

Cruise ships were problematic during the COVID-19 pandemic, with many of them reporting outbreaks of that disease and having to be quarantined at ports.

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs says there’s a cholera epidemic in southern Africa, with a total of around 188,000 cases and 3,000 deaths in eight countries since January 2023.

Cholera spreads through food or water contaminated with the bacteria that causes it. Health officials were also testing the food onboard the Norwegian Dawn for cholera. Those tests results hadn’t yet come back but authorities said they were satisfied that there was no cholera threat after the water tests were negative.

There were 2,184 passengers and 1,026 crew members onboard the Norwegian Dawn when it arrived in Mauritius, the ports authority said. Around 2,000 of those passengers were due to disembark in Mauritius and end their cruise and 2,279 new passengers were due to get onboard.

Everyone leaving the ship would still be screened by health officials, said Dr Bhooshun Ori, the director of health services at the Mauritius ministry of health.

Norwegian Cruise Line said passengers would now disembark the ship on Tuesday.

The 294-meter (964-feet) long Norwegian Dawn has 14 decks, with a casino, a theater and a video game arcade among its facilities.

A regular cabin starts at around $2,000 per person for a 12-day cruise, according to the company’s website. For $47,000, you can have a 3-bedroom Garden Villa that comes with a private garden, a hot tub, an outdoor dining area and your own butler service.

First refuelling for Russia’s Akademik Lomonosov floating NPP

!{Model.Description}

cruise ships port of napier

The FNPP includes two KLT-40S reactor units. In such reactors, nuclear fuel is not replaced in the same way as in standard NPPs – partial replacement of fuel once every 12-18 months. Instead, once every few years the entire reactor core is replaced with and a full load of fresh fuel.

The KLT-40S reactor cores have a number of advantages compared with standard NPPs. For the first time, a cassette core was used, which made it possible to increase the fuel cycle to 3-3.5 years before refuelling, and also reduce by one and a half times the fuel component in the cost of the electricity produced. The operating experience of the FNPP provided the basis for the design of the new series of nuclear icebreaker reactors (series 22220). Currently, three such icebreakers have been launched.

The Akademik Lomonosov was connected to the power grid in December 2019, and put into commercial operation in May 2020.

Electricity generation from the FNPP at the end of 2023 amounted to 194 GWh. The population of Pevek is just over 4,000 people. However, the plant can potentially provide electricity to a city with a population of up to 100,000. The FNPP solved two problems. Firstly, it replaced the retiring capacities of the Bilibino Nuclear Power Plant, which has been operating since 1974, as well as the Chaunskaya Thermal Power Plant, which is more than 70 years old. It also supplies power to the main mining enterprises located in western Chukotka. In September, a 490 km 110 kilovolt power transmission line was put into operation connecting Pevek and Bilibino.

WGS 84 coordinate reference system is the latest revision of the World Geodetic System, which is used in mapping and navigation, including GPS satellite navigation system (the Global Positioning System).

Geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) define a position on the Earth’s surface. Coordinates are angular units. The canonical form of latitude and longitude representation uses degrees (°), minutes (′), and seconds (″). GPS systems widely use coordinates in degrees and decimal minutes, or in decimal degrees.

Latitude varies from −90° to 90°. The latitude of the Equator is 0°; the latitude of the South Pole is −90°; the latitude of the North Pole is 90°. Positive latitude values correspond to the geographic locations north of the Equator (abbrev. N). Negative latitude values correspond to the geographic locations south of the Equator (abbrev. S).

Longitude is counted from the prime meridian ( IERS Reference Meridian for WGS 84) and varies from −180° to 180°. Positive longitude values correspond to the geographic locations east of the prime meridian (abbrev. E). Negative longitude values correspond to the geographic locations west of the prime meridian (abbrev. W).

UTM or Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system divides the Earth’s surface into 60 longitudinal zones. The coordinates of a location within each zone are defined as a planar coordinate pair related to the intersection of the equator and the zone’s central meridian, and measured in meters.

Elevation above sea level is a measure of a geographic location’s height. We are using the global digital elevation model GTOPO30 .
