Top 5 airlines flying to Europe

Had to run to make it only to have the flight delayed to wait for all the late connectors Second drink service skipped up

Boarding was a sh!t show. JFK BOARDING was awful. The agent called three sections at a time Clogging the area then yelling at people to not block the walk way. How are you going to call delta one , premium select and comfort plus at once and the yell at highest paying passengers. Need to do a lot better and the flight attendants in the galley need to understand that their voices travel. They were talking about others and everyone in the cabin heard them

Uncomfortable seats on 14 hour flight. Mediocre food. On time and great crew.

Please see my lengthy description on MSP to Atlanta survey. Tailbone is killing me from old hard seats. Seat would not recline and were not near exit row. Entertainment did not work properly and couldn’t use. No audio and touch screen failed. 3 plus hours of discomfort in narrower seats than previous flight not in comfort plus. Very dissatisfied and deserve comfort plus charges refunds, at the very least, for both my wife and I. The plane needs to be retired. Please feel free to contact me directly for further details.

MSP to Atlanta was much better than Atlanta to St. Kitts. Paid $180 each for myself and wife for Delta comfort from Atlanta to St. Kitts. Seats were more narrow and obviously old and worn out. Tailbone is killing me. Seat would not recline. Seats behind reclined and we were not an exit row or in front of an exit row. Entertainment did not work in that the movie jumped forward and back and there was no audio. The plug in the arm rest was loose. Flight attendant tried “resetting” the video for my seat but no good. She never checked back. Someone else near me had the same issue. Touch screen was unresponsive. No where near as comfortable as MSP to Atlanta flight. 3 plus hrs. flight time without the basic amenities and not even remotely close to comfortable but paid for Comfort plus. I will be very disappointed if I have the same on my return “Comfort Plus” flight St. Kitts to Atlanta. At the very least my wife and I should be refunded for round trip “Comfort Plus” charges. Please feel free to contact me directly for more details.

public website still broken for years randomly blocking browsers with privacy options active after loading a page maybe once. check-in on laptop was almost impossible but eventually randomly worked. had to print pass at airport since couldn't get back in to load digital pass on mobile firefox or chrome. red eye flight so smooth onboarding, plenty of room to spread out, easy offboarding. onboard wifi instructions mention vpn can cause problems connecting but fails to also mention private dns. no printed or built in menu list, seems weird to require personal device to point at qr code link for menu which does not even allow direct ordering. people with health condition risk related dietary restrictions trying to avoid for example cholesterol and sugar are left guessing what they can order either way without nutritional info highlights (cranberry juice was minute maid cocktail with as much suger as typical can of soda). tap to pay wasn't working and always seems sketchy to manually enter card info. good movie variety, so limited tv was okay.

It wasn't really their fault it was the horrible winds and we just got unlucky.

Great experience overall. Check in at Austin was congested as they only have about 6 check in kiosks, one was broken, and there was a lot of Spring Break travelers.

The main person that was coordinating everything was a short white/light skin Spanish man and he was very rude. It honestly made me feel like it was everyone’s First day at work. His announcements were very not reasonable and they did not make sense. The stewardess on the flight that made the announcements she didn’t even know what she was talking about she sounded inebriated. There were no snacks or drinks on our flight there wasn’t even much turbulence. This flight was not enjoyable nor was it what a Delta flight should be and just this past week I flew with Delta 3 times.

The landing was bad and the hostess came two times and i was sleeping but when she served the person that nexts to me I woke up and she didn’t even asked me if I need any drink or snacks two times!!!!

Beverage and food services are excellent. We enjoy paying the extra for economy plus for the 3 inches more leg room to be exact.

Left 2 hours later for delayed I had to take care a kid with special need since people don’t want to move to accommodate the rest of the family. . It wasn’t bad but that made me upset that people can be that selfish.

The crew were really great, but the 4 hour delay in small chunks was the worst.

They did get us booked on a later flight, but it made us miss our connecting flight. So, we had to stay and another state overnight with no luggage or clothes. Because they kept our luggage at airport for next flight on the next day.

The leg space between me and the seat in front of me was excellent.

Flight was delayed by 3 hours. The pilot made up 1 hour during the flight, but that made the wait at the airport 5 hours once you factor getting there 2 hours early.

That flight was smooth, and staff we courteous. it was a full flight so very tight. The boarding through security was not properly controlled. it was rushed and the scanning process for our bags, etc. was pilling up at the other end with no time to empty our belonging my personal items almost toppled over on the floor if i hadn't caught it rapidly. Was it just that time, or always like this - cant say. other than that all else was fine.

For a 22 minute flight all you expect is for it to be safe and comfortable

Good movies, iffy pay WiFi, food ok- on time though and that was great!

Some of these FA’s need attitude check. Snarky bitches

New ridiculous policy by american destroyed my allegiance to american. As a million miler with american, I expected it would be easy to get on an earlier flight when I got to airport earlier than expected, and save a five hour layover. WRONG. The online app would not let me switch flights, So I called, and was promised a call back in 90 minutes. HAH! The customer service desk at DCA said “we no longer have access to changing a flight on our screens. If the app couldn’t do it, I should send a letter to American, but there’s nothing else possible!”

We were delayed bc ground crew gave the flight crew the wrong paperwork. We taxiied to the runway then back to the gate to get the correct paperwork that no one bothered reviewing the first time we pushed back. Boarding was rude and stressful like it always is. Gate agents and flight attendants are all over 55 years of age, embittered by years of underpayment From AA leading to their passive agressive bitchiness for no reason.

Same basket of unhealthy prepackaged snacks (junk food) which was depleted by the time it got to my row!!

Lots of weather delays that were poorly communicated and managed. I get there are weather delays but they didn’t make it clear what was happening or comfortable on the plane

Flight attendants had no personality! The looked miserable! My seat was broken in first class. I can’t believe how American Airlines changed. 😞

I am tired of being nickel and dimed for seat location, checked luggage and carry on bags. That is why i rarely fly anymore.

Me and my husband experienced very bad in American Airlines. We missed our flight going to Doha. The American Airlines was delayed we arrived already 10:27pm. Supposed to be 9:40 pm. So what they did they rebooked our flight and they gave us a hotel. When we arrived at the hotel the front desk said it was fully booked already. Oh my gosh! I said why did you accept the booking if it's fully booked. The guy said that's American Airlines they just book even it's already full. That's 2am already, we have nothing to do so, we decided to go another hotel. We pay the room, food and taxi. Pls give an action on this matter. Refund our expenses and give us more compensation. Not only our room, food, taxi but also our efforts, tiredness looking for a room that can accommodate us.

Was flying in premium eco and there were around 5-6 movies I wanted to watch and none of those could I play for some reasons. Not just me we checked w the person sitting next to me. Few of the movies were only playable :( Also that was not great that we couldn't upgrade to business however tried to, many times before the flight :(

pleased with overall experienced, but seats in coach are tight.

Flight delayed, boarding time kept changing, not good. Nee firm information given each time.

This flight is always a cramped bus. The gate area was inadequate and announcements were hard to hear. The flight was delayed 45 minutes to an hour by a broken aircraft door, making our total delay from Vilnius 5 hours.

Great seats assigned and comfortable, movies are good, food is delicious, great experience. No delays and they prioritize boarding children with parents which is plus.

they canceled my flight and we’re absolutely atrocious and helping me rebook

My flight was canceled. New flight is 40 hours later and I still didn’t get the flight from Frankfurt to Zagreb.

Great service. The flight was in great condition and the staff was very cheerful.

Check in crew in Charlotte NC was superb. There were 6 of them plus what looked like a supervisor, helping to answer questions and keep things moving. Never saw so many check in crew. Then some of them showed up at the gate later for boarding. Great. The flight was mediocre. The seats were small with little leg room. The screens kept coming on when we were trying to sleep and wouldn’t shut off. I know we paid far less than first class but does that mean we should be shoved in there??

Boarding was horrible. We were packed into a bus with few seats and made to stand for 10 to 15 minutes, then driven for 5 minutes on wild curves. Complementary food and drink was a tiny chocolate and a bottle of water. Seating was cramped. Aircraft had no video.

didn’t even get to go one of my returning flights cancelled and I wasn’t even in their system, vacation ruined thanks for nothing

The process overall was pretty seamless, and the crew were very friendly (especially Michael). Considering we booked expecting Lufthansa and the flight was operated by United, it was still a very good service and journey overall. The in-flight entertainment was great, with lots of quality options. One slight negative was that I had selected a vegetarian meal prior to flying, but received a vegan one. I think there should be more dietary options as it meant I missed out on some food that I would have preferred (and it seemed like the standard meals and snacks had a vegetarian option anyway). There was also a group of people who were moving around a lot and being generally disruptive at the quietest part of the flight, when the lights were off and most people were sleeping. I would have appreciated staff stepping in to encourage them to be mindful of others). Towards the end of the flight (which was very early in the morning in both time zones), the lights suddenly came on and breakfast was served. In my opinion, this was too early, and everyone was rudely awoken from sleep. After breakfast was cleared away, the lights went off again for about 45 minutes, allowing people to sleep some more. Then the lights came on again for landing. It seems like if they had served breakfast later, the lights on-lights off-lights on shenanigans could have been avoided, and people could have slept longer (and staff could have rested longer too).

Crew was rowdy and loud just hanging out in the rear of the plane instead of assisting passengers during boarding. During the flight the crew mostly hung out in the rear of the plane being obnoxious to a point of disturbance.

The flight was delayed numerous times with inconsistent updates and very ambiguous information. When it was finally cancelled the logistics of handing out vouchers and rebooking was extremely chaotic. Meal vouchers were completely inadequate for the airport restaurants, and not even accepted at some. All-in-all, it was a very disappointing experience.

Terrible. The flight from Islamabad to London took 3 hours more then previously planned, I missed my connection to Chicago, and instead had to go New York, spend an extra day before arriving at my final destination. The return leg of the journey was similar. The connection time in Qatar was shrinked to less then an hour unannounced, I had to scramble to barely make it to my flight to Islamabad. Terrible experience, never using British airways again.

The crew on this flight were attentive, efficient and friendly. It really made for an enjoyable flight.

The crew on this flight were excellent. They were friendly and attentive. It really made the flight more enjoyable.

They canceled my flight , they put me on a different flight that was delayed and the connection was lost . They lost my luggage. And now I’m stuck with any of my belongings.

British Airways canceled our plane and gave us a new flight scheduled to leave in only three hours, so we had to drop everything and rush to the airport. The new itinerary only left us a one hour layover in Madrid, which was too short because the plane landed late and so we missed our connecting flight. We were then booked onto a flight scheduled to take off 8 hours later, and were not given any compensation or remedial measures.

Seat layout, flight/club attendant service, food variety and quality could have been better. Business class Standard is visibly low compared with 6 other airlines that we have traveled for the past two years.

Despite many attempts to work out a change, neither British Airways nor Kayak nor Chatdeal would allow us to cancel or change this flight so we lost all of the payments when we were not able to fly. Absolutely terrible customer service. We will never use either of the services again.

It said that there was wifi. During the flight there was no wifi and while waiting at the gate the phone services already got cut off so I wasn’t able to say I am taxiing from the gate to my husband. This left me with an uncomfortable feeling. So I was waiting on the WiFi connection during flight and that never happened.

Asked for a wheelchair multiple times. Got denied the wheelchair in London layover.

Before You Go

  • To make it easier to replace your passport if it’s lost or stolen, in addition to your passport, take a photocopy of your passport information page (keeping it separate from your actual passport).
  • Carry only a limited amount of cash, just enough for gratuities and incidental purchases. Major credit cards are widely accepted and can be replaced if lost or stolen.
  • Always lock your hotel room door (including patio and balcony door on any level of the building) and use the peephole before opening the door.
  • Store your valuables (such as cash, credit cards and airline tickets) in the hotel’s in-room safe or front desk safety deposit box.

Our Europe travel guide for 2023 & 2024

Portugal Burgau Algarve

Are you looking to travel Europe in 2023 or 2024? Or maybe you’re a little unsure? Having travelled the continent multiple times, including 6 months in Europe full-time in 2022, we urge you to go for it! We didn’t regret it and it’s likely you won’t either! This blog will cover some key considerations for those looking to travel Europe in 2023 and 2024, along with some of our top recommendations for places that you might not even know exist!

Where should you travel in 2023?

Let’s start with the good stuff, planning what beautiful European destinations you might visit in 2023! The following recommendations are some of our top picks for your 2023 Europe trip , however it isn’t an exhaustive list. Additionally, we have numerous blogs providing further information on travel destinations if you are interested. If you have further questions, please comment below, email us, or engage with us on our Instagram channel.

OUR TOP EUROPE PICKS:

Southern italy:.

The south of Italy was delightful, and somewhere we just can’t wait to return back to! Particularly, Puglia and Sicily , and both destinations that we think are underrated (compared to the popular central/northern Italy) and deserve more attention.

The gem of Puglia is definitely the stunning Polignano a Mare, a seaside town that will always hold a special place in our hearts. Puglia also has numerous charming small inland and seaside towns that you could easily spend weeks exploring.

gallipoli beaches of salento puglia

Sicily is one of the most southern points of Europe, and offers an excellent ‘shoulder season’ destination to prolong your summer. We visited in late September and were treated to excellent weather. The food is exceptional and whilst touristy, we found it less chaotic than the bigger cities in the north of Italy.

Read more about the south of Italy here:

  • Take a look at our visit and road trip through Puglia!
  • See our thoughts and recommendations on the stunning Polignano a Mare!
  • Take a look at our shoulder season visit to Taormina in Sicily.

Portugal remains one of our favourite trips to date! The country offers so much, with highlights and attractions for all types of travellers. Boasting incredible old cities you could spend days wondering, top shelf cuisine (including the delightful Pastel de Nata), stunning beaches, charming small towns and much more! We urge you to consider Portugal for your 2023 travels!

trip a deal europe 2023

Croatia is no longer the underrated gem it was in the past, however the popularity is definitely justified! Boasting world-best beaches, delightful seaside towns, and lots of historic towns to explore, Croatia definitely deserves a place on your Europe 2023 travel itinerary. We would strongly recommend you visit the Croatian Islands, and after visiting many of the popular ones, we recommend Vis Island as our favourite! A trip to Croatia also isn’t complete without checking out Dubrovnik (think Game of Thrones). We spend almost 3 weeks in the beautiful country in 2022!

  • See our thoughts on our favourite island in Croatia, Vis!
  • See our guide to the historic city of Dubrovnik!

Dubrovnik walk the walls croatia

Jungfrau region in Switzerland:

The entire country of Switzerland is beautiful, however the Jungfrau region (and surrounding towns/lakes/mountains) was particularly enthralling. Think stunning views, incredible hikes, mountain-top chalets, and lots more! Whilst not a ‘budget friendly’ travel destination, we feel like Switzerland is worth the money, particularly if you are an outdoor/hike lover.

  • See our thoughts and guide for your visit to the Jungfrau region.
  • Where to stay in the Jungfrau? Consider staying in Wengen!
  • Don’t miss Oeschinensee when you travel to the region!

Interlarken jungfrau switzerland where to visit

SOME DESTINATIONS TO CONSIDER:

Turkish riviera:.

We visited the stunning Turkish coastline in September 2022, visiting the delightful Kaş . This small seaside town sits a few hours away from Antalya or Fethiye. It offers stunning beaches and crystal clear water, lots of wonderful restaurants, and a definite ‘holiday feel’. See more about one of our favourite places in Europe, Kas!

Kas antalya what to do turkey

TRANSYLVANIA:

Transylvania is a picturesque region in central Romania that completely exceeded our expectations. Filled with charming small towns waiting to be explored, Transylvania is definitely an under-rated region of Europe we think you should consider visiting in 2023. We would highly recommend basing yourself in Brasov , and checking out the numerous towns and attractions nearby (like the Transfagarasan Highway). Take a look at our Transylvanian adventures here!

Sinaia day trip transylvania romania

Scandinavia:

Scandinavia commonly refers to the northern European region consisting of Denmark, Sweden and Norway. However, typically countries like Iceland, Finland and Faroe Islands are also included as part of Scandinavia. We have only briefly sampled this region, visiting Denmark and Sweden, and already we know we want to return. Think clean cities, impressive architecture, beautiful nature, friendly locals and everything that runs on time. Wanting to do something a little different in summer? Consider spending time in Scandinavia, where you will be treated to some of the longest summer days in the world! Take a look at our visit to Copenhagen here!

Sunset hornbaek copenhagen things to do

If you have been following our blog/social media for awhile, you will know we just can’t stop raving about Lake Bled . Situated in Slovenia, this lakeside region is stunning! We will endeavour to return in the future, as Lake Bled provided us with stunning views, great hikes, good food and more! Our visit to Lake Bled and recommendations can be found here!

Lake Bled hike view

Southern France:

The south of France is so beautiful! Think rolling hills, charming old towns, great wine and lots to explore! We visited the Luberon/Provonce regions, basing ourselves in Avignon. Whilst we loved all of the towns in the region, our highlight was definitely the stunning Gordes ! Take a look at our South of France adventures and recommendations here!

Gordes france

The medieval Scottish city of Edinburgh was seriously impressive! We loved the old architecture, the great food, the charming streets, and the stunning views. Whilst maybe not your top summer pick for Europe, Edinburgh is perfect to add on to the end of your travels. See our thoughts on Edinburgh here!

The vennel View Point edinburgh

Please note, this list does not include many of our favourites like Bruges, Leiden, Mostar, Kotor, Antiparos , Gjirokaster, Tuscany, Prague, Budapest, Lake Ohrid, Cappadocia, and more!

A few key considerations, recommendations, and tips for travelling Europe in 2023:

Don’t forget to think about:.

This is a little checklist of things you need to consider when planning your trip. Each of these topics could easily be a blog themselves, however this list is designed to get you thinking.

  • Passport! This is a MUST DO! You need to have at least 6 months on your passport from the date you plan to RETURN home! Don’t get caught out here! Check your passport now and plan early!
  • Travel insurance – Make sure you get it! Buy your travel insurance early so if you need to cancel due to unforeseen circumstances, you might be covered. If you have health issues or things to include in your policy, make sure your policy will cover this and mention it when booking.
  • Travel credit card and/or debit card. Get a card that will minimise your oversees bank fees. It is very easy to spend $20 or more on a single ATM withdrawal overseas if you don’t have a good card. We use the 28 Degrees Credit Card, however need to look into better debit card for our next trip (yes, we got stung a bit by transaction fees).
  • Saving – earlier is better! We we able to save in advance for our Europe trips, and avoid going in to debt to travel. However, we know many people have have put themselves in reasonable amount of debt with a Europe holiday. Whilst we don’t give financial advice, we urge you to think about saving as early as you can to minimise your debt.
  • Travel days take longer than you think. If a flight says 1 hour, be prepared that the total journey will take at least half a day. Travel days end up taking more time than you think and we advise you to plan for this. Read more about travel days and our tips to ‘beat them’ here!
  • Book “cheap flights” early. In peak season, flights from carriers like RyanAir between popular destinations will book out!
  • Check that your destinations ‘link up’. Even if the itinerary makes sense in your head, you might not be able to get a flight/train etc between them. Depending on the length of your trip, spending a day (rather than a 1 hour flight) to get between locations might not be feasible.

Take a look at our thoughts on more things to know when you are planning your trip!

Planning a 6 month Europe trip – What to know

Our favourite places & where we want to visit in 2023 and beyond:

While we may not be heading back to Europe in 2023, we have a few destinations that are top of our list next time we return. These include Malta, Scandinavia, Puglia, Portugal, Sardinia, Poland and more! Our favourite places from our 6 month European travels in 2022 can be found here! Want to see our 6 month travel itinerary from 2022? See the itinerary and destinations here!

Polignano a Mare puglia drone most underrated place europe blog

What time of year should you travel?

Not every destination will be perfect for every climate. For example, Seville, a vibrant food lovers paradise in southern Spain, becomes almost unbearably hot in peak summer (sometimes >40 degrees). This is also similar for locations like Turkey, Sicily and more. These destinations are perfect pre/post the peak summer months. Additionally, big cities like Rome and Paris are perfect destinations to visit on the fringe of summer (or in colder months), when the weather is more temperate, and possibly less crowds. If you want to be walking around the cities a lot, consider what the weather might be when you visit. Furthermore, think about what you want to do in each of the locations you visit. E.g., there may be not much point visiting a beachside town in the middle of winter. Thus we recommend you check the average temperatures for the destinations you are thinking of visiting. Take a look at our thoughts on the best destinations for shoulder season in Europe!

Booking Accommodation in Europe in 2023:

Top Tip: get in early! The good stuff often gets booked out fast! This is particularly true for ‘cheaper’ gems in popular locations.

Further Tips:

  • Stay close to the action! Depending on how long you are staying, we would urge you to avoid lengthy transportation in/out of the cities.
  • Research where to stay beforehand – staying in the ‘centre’ of the city isn’t always the best call. In some cities where you stay makes a massive difference, e.g. we recommend staying the Le Marais in Paris (vs the touristic heart).
  • How far away is your accommodation from the train station (or transport options)? This may not stop you from booking somewhere, but it’s definitely a consideration.

Should you book a tour?

There are a multitude of tour options out there depending on the type of activity or experience you want. A few of the options below are good to consider:

  • Free walking tours: we were a huge fan of “free” walking tours. Most cities have them running multiple times per day in many languages. We found generally the guides we passionate, knowledgeable, and it was a great way to see the city. The tours aren’t really free, as the guides are paid based upon tips. Typically, a normal tip amount is around $10-20 per person, but that varies depending on currency and location.
  • Paid private tours: Many cities offer paid private tours from local guides. You can source these through operators like TripAdvisor, Viator and more. Hotels/Airbnb hosts will often also be able to recommend guides for you.
  • Viator tours: We have booked tours before through Viator , with this operator providing a variety of different tours in many areas around the world. Private, small group or larger group settings. See more here.
  • Intrepid Tours: Offering group tours in many countries, Intrepid are a big brand and generally have great tours. We did an Intrepid tour in Morocco. You can see our pros and cons of a tour in Morocco here.
  • Top Deck, Contiki, Sail Croatia, Yacht Week : If sailing around picturesque beaches and partying sounds like your kettle of fish, then there’s a lot of options like Sail Croatia (younger crowd) or Yacht Week. Group tours like Contiki (generally younger crowd, more party focus) and Top Deck are great options. Note that these tours limit your flexibility, and aren’t as cost effective as booking it yourself, however they allow you to see a lot and meet new people.
  • Cruises, Luxury Options? This isn’t our area of expertise. In Europe there are a multitude of luxury options like river cruises, train tours and more.

Deal alert: Fly business class to Europe from $2,120 round-trip

ships in the harbor of Belgrade

If you've been trying to book a summer vacation to Europe, you've probably noticed that prices for many of the most popular cities across the Atlantic are quite expensive.

Events like the Summer Olympics in Paris and Taylor Swift's sold-out tour are playing a role in the high cost of airline tickets to Europe, as demand is through the roof. This also applies to business-class seats. So when there is a good deal to be had for overseas travel, you better jump on it.

We have one for you now: Air Serbia has a big sale on round-trip business-class seats to a slew of European destinations from Chicago and New York City. Those cities have nonstop flights to Belgrade, the Serbian capital and location of Air Serbia's hub. The other destinations involve layovers, but considering you're getting lie-flat seats for a trip to Europe, we think it's worth it.

The travel window for this deal is from April to December of this year, giving you a wide window to find the best price for your trip. We did find some good prices for summer travel, but some of the best prices for certain destinations were in late spring or the fall.

trip a deal europe 2023

Deal basics

Airline : Air Serbia

Routes : From Chicago and New York City to Amsterdam, Belgrade, Budapest, Istanbul, Prague, Rome, Vienna and other European cities

Travel dates : The sale applies to flights between April and December

How to book : Browse Google Flights , then book directly with the airline

Book by: As soon as possible

Sample flights

European destinations include:

  • Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (AMS)
  • Athens International Airport (ATH)
  • Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport (BEG)
  • Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport (BUD)
  • Istanbul Airport (IST)
  • Prague Airport (PRG)
  • Rome Fiumicino Leonardo da Vinci Airport (FCO)
  • Thessaloniki Airport (SKG)
  • Vienna Airport (VIE)

Let's start with the nonstop options. You can book a nonstop, round-trip, business-class seat from New York City's John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) to Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport (BEG) in late April for just $2,120. That's a huge discount from normal prices for that route.

trip a deal europe 2023

June is another month where we saw substantial markdowns on this route, although it's about $150 more per ticket than in April. Still if you want to visit Belgrade as part of your summer vacation, this is an excellent price to travel in style.

trip a deal europe 2023

If you live in Chicago, the best availability we saw for nonstops to Belgrade was in the fall. You can fly out of O'Hare International Airport (ORD) in October for $2,314 round-trip. There are plenty of options at that price in September and October out of the Windy City.

trip a deal europe 2023

We found a fantastic fare price for a New York-to-Greece route in the summer. You can fly to Athens International Airport (ATH) in July for $2,278. That's almost a thousand dollars less than a business-class seat typically costs for this itinerary.

trip a deal europe 2023

If you want to visit Vienna, July looks to be the best month. We found lots of flights out of New York City to Vienna Airport (VIE) for around $2,300.

trip a deal europe 2023

New York City to Turkey is a great deal in midsummer. You can fly from JFK to IST for less than $2,300 — a major reduction from normal prices. We do want to note there is a nearly nine-hour layover in Belgrade with this itinerary.

Maximize your purchase

When you book this deal or any flights, be sure to use a credit card that earns bonus points on airfare purchases, such as:

  • Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card : 2 points per dollar spent on travel
  • American Express® Gold Card : 3 points per dollar spent on airfare when booked directly with the airline or through amextravel.com
  • The Platinum Card® from American Express : 5 points per dollar spent on airfare when booked directly with the airline or through American Express Travel (on up to $500,000 of these purchases per calendar year, then 1 point per dollar)
  • Citi Premier® Card (see rates and fees ): 3 points per dollar spent on airfare
  • Chase Sapphire Reserve® : 3 points per dollar spent on travel

Bottom line

The best prices we found in this sale are for nonstop flights to Belgrade, which isn't surprising since that's Air Serbia's hub. However, if you dig around, you can find several other great deals in the summer and the fall to some of the most desired cities in Europe.

Blinken says he believes a ceasefire deal is possible. Here's what you should know

From CNN staff

Secretary of State Antony Blinken holds a joint news conference with Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry in Cairo, Egypt, on Thursday.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said the " gaps are narrowing " between Israel and Hamas to get a temporary ceasefire in exchange for the release of hostages, but conceded that "there’s still real challenges."

"We’ve been working, as you know, with Egypt, with Qatar and with Israel to put a strong proposal on the table. Hamas responded to that," Blinken said during news conference in Cairo, Egypt, with Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry.

Blinken said he still believes a deal is possible, despite "difficult work to get there."

Here are other headlines you should know:

  • Resolution vote: The US-proposed United Nations Security Council  resolution on Gaza  will be brought to a vote on Friday morning, US Mission to the UN spokesperson Nate Evans told CNN on Thursday.
  • Al-Shifa Hospital updates: The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and Israel Security Agency (ISA) announced Thursday that their troops have arrested more than 600 people so far in the operation  at Gaza’s Al-Shifa Hospital. More than 140 people have been killed in the operation, the agencies said in a joint statement. The Israeli military launched the operation Monday in Al-Shifa , Gaza’s largest hospital facility, where thousands of people were sheltering.
  • Israel decides not to send patients back to Gaza: The Israeli government will not send  about two dozen Palestinian patients in East Jerusalem and Tel Aviv hospitals back to Gaza until Israel's Supreme Court rules on the merits of the case, according to a letter filed with the Supreme Court by the Israeli State Attorney’s Office. A collective of human rights groups petitioned Israel’s highest court following  a CNN report  about some of the patients, including mothers and their 6-month-old babies.
  • European Council summit in Brussels: EU leaders fell short of calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza when they met for the European Council summit in Brussels on Thursday. As the summit wrapped for its first day, European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen told journalists that leaders had reached a consensus regarding the need for an "immediate humanitarian pause" in Gaza but fell short of calling for an immediate ceasefire, in a move that is sure to dismay leaders of member states such as Ireland and Spain who have advocated for an immediate ceasefire in advance of the summit.

1 unmanned surface vessel and 2 anti-ship ballistic missiles launched by Houthis destroyed, US says

From CNN's Mary Kay Mallonee

Coalition forces destroyed one unmanned surface vessel and two anti-ship ballistic missiles launched by Houthis from Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen on Thursday, US Central Command (CENTCOM) said in a statement.

There were no reported injuries or damage to US or coalition vessels, it said.

Who are coalition forces: Following attacks on shipping in the Red Sea, several countries, including the United Kingdom, Bahrain, Canada, France, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Seychelles and Spain, came together under Operation Prosperity Guardian, US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin announced in December.

The goal was to ensure freedom of navigation for all countries and to bolster regional security and prosperity, he said.

US military conducts another airdrop of food into Gaza

The US military conducted another airdrop of humanitarian assistance into northern Gaza on Thursday, US Central Command said in a statement.

Air Force aircraft – two C-17’s – and Army soldiers “dropped over 50,600 U.S. meal equivalents into Northern Gaza, an area of great need, allowing for civilian access to the critical aid,” CENTCOM said.

CENTCOM said parachutes on five of the 80 bundles of food delivered failed to deploy out.

“These five bundles landed in a non populated area and caused no damage,” CENTCOM said.

Remember: The US and other countries have been air-dropping humanitarian aid into Gaza amid warnings from the United Nations that hundreds of thousands in the besieged enclave are on the brink of famine.

Aid agencies have criticized the deployment of aid airdrops as ineffective given the scale of the need in Gaza. Earlier this month airdropped aid packages killed at least five people and injured 10 others when the packages fell on them in the Al Shati camp west of Gaza City, according to a journalist on the scene.

European Union leaders fall short of calling for immediate ceasefire in Gaza during summit

From CNN's Niamh Kennedy

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Charles Michel attend a press conference, on the day of a European Union leaders summit in Brussels, Belgium, on Thursday, March 21.

EU leaders fell short of calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza when they met for the European Council summit in Brussels on Thursday.

Despite the bloc now endeavoring to get aid supplies into Gaza via its newly approved maritime corridor from Cyprus, von der Leyen said that "full, rapid, safe and unhindered humanitarian access into Gaza" from all routes including land crossings remains "essential."

Israel has significantly tightened controls on aid entering Gaza via land crossings in recent months but has repeatedly rejected accusations that it has been preventing aid from entering the enclave, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu telling CNN last week that its policy "is to not have famine, but to be the entry of humanitarian support as needed, and as much as is needed."

Von der Leyen and European Council President Charles Michel called on the Israeli government not to launch a ground operation in Rafah, with Michel saying the bloc can easily "imagine the consequences if such an operation would be launched."

Israeli government says it will not send Palestinians in hospitals back to Gaza until Supreme Court rules

From Abeer Salman, Jeremy Diamond, and Mick Krever in Jerusalem

The Israeli government will not send about two dozen Palestinian patients in East Jerusalem and Tel Aviv hospitals back to Gaza until Israel's Supreme Court rules on the merits of the case, according to a letter filed with the Supreme Court by the Israeli State Attorney’s Office.

The state attorney’s office has asked the court for 30 days to submit its response to a complaint filed by a group of Israeli human rights groups on behalf of some of the patients seeking to bar the Israeli government from deporting the patients during that time. The Israeli Supreme Court on Wednesday issued a temporary injunction to prevent that transfer until the government responded.

The government said it has agreed not to send any of the patients back to Gaza “except for any of them who request in writing through their attorney to allow him to return to the Gaza Strip.”

The human rights groups petitioned Israel’s highest court following  a CNN report  about some of the patients, including mothers and their 6-month-old babies.

US UN Security Council resolution on Gaza will be brought to a vote on Friday

From CNN's Jennifer Hansler

The US United Nations Security Council resolution on Gaza will be brought to a vote on Friday morning, US Mission to the UN spokesperson Nate Evans told CNN on Thursday.

"The United States has been working in earnest with Council members over the last several weeks on a Resolution that will unequivocally support ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at securing an immediate ceasefire in Gaza as part of a hostage deal, which would get hostages released and help enable a surge in humanitarian aid," Evans said. "After many rounds of consultations with the Security Council, we will be bringing this Resolution for a vote on Friday morning," he said.

Some background: The US resolution comes after the US vetoed multiple prior UNSC resolutions calling for immediate ceasefires. US Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield said after  vetoing an Algerian resolution  in late February that it “would put sensitive negotiations in jeopardy.”

Blinken says "gaps are narrowing" for hostage deal, but difficult challenges remain

From CNN’s Michael Conte, Kylie Atwood and Jennifer Hansler

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken speaks during a press conference in Cairo, Egypt, on Thursday, March 21.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said that the "gaps are narrowing" between Israel and Hamas to get a temporary ceasefire in exchange for the release of hostages, but conceded that "there’s still real challenges."

"The teams are working every single day on this,” he said. “There’s still real challenges. We’ve closed the gaps but there are still gaps."

As Israel prepares for a possible operation in the Rafah region of Gaza , Blinken said the US believes Hamas "can be effectively dealt with without a major ground operation in Rafah.” He said a ground operation would “be a mistake," and officials will outline alternative plans when an Israeli delegation goes to Washington, DC, next week.

Meanwhile, Shoukry said he and Blinken agreed to plan "concrete steps" to increase humanitarian aid in Gaza.

The minister stated that the US and Egypt are aligned in their "total rejection of military operations in Rafah."

The minister added that Egypt would do "whatever is possible, whatever is required to facilitate a cessation of hostilities and an end to the military activity."

More than 600 people have been arrested since raiding Al-Shifa Hospital, Israeli military says

From CNN's Mitchell McCluskey

Smoke rises near the Al-Shifa Medical Complex in the western part of Gaza City on Thursday, March 21.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and Israel Security Agency (ISA) announced on Thursday that their troops have arrested more than 600 people so far in the operation at Gaza’s Al-Shifa Hospital.

More than 140 have been killed in the operation, the agencies said in a joint statement.

Israeli forces recovered several weapons and intelligence documents and arrested people that include senior officials with Hamas and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad organization, the Israeli agencies claimed. CNN cannot verify the claims of the IDF and ISA.

The Israeli military launched the operation in Al-Shifa on Monday when it alleged that “senior Hamas terrorists” were using the facility to “conduct and promote terrorist activity.”

Hamas has repeatedly denied using hospitals as bases for its activity, including Al-Shifa. The Ministry of Health in Gaza said that thousands of Palestinians had been seeking refuge in Al-Shifa before the operation began.

In a statement, Hamas decried the operation at the hospital and accused Israel of “destroying many of the hospital’s capabilities, blowing up and burning the surrounding residential buildings, detaining and abusing the displaced, medical staff and patients.”

Russia-Ukraine latest: NATO 'considering shooting down missiles close to border'; Russia suggests UK-US had role in Moscow attack

We'll be back with more news on Wednesday. See you then.

Belarusian dictator Alexander Lukashenko says the men suspected of carrying out the terrorist attack near Moscow last Friday initially tried to flee to Belarus.

According to state-run news outlet Belta, Mr Lukashenko said his country had heavily increased security at its border with Russia after the shooting massacre, meaning the attackers "understood it was impossible to enter Belarus".

He said they had changed their plans and "turned away and went to the section of the Ukrainian-Russian border".

The four men - all Tajik citizens - are accused of an attack on a Moscow concert hall which left at least 139 people dead.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has blamed Ukraine for being behind the attack, saying the terrorists were caught while fleeing to Ukraine, questioning "who was waiting for them there".

On Tuesday, Russia's FSB chief suggested the US and UK could have been involved.

Islamic State's Afghan offshoot ISIS-K has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Ukraine has sunk or disabled a third of Russia's warships in the Black Sea in just over two years of war, according to Ukraine's navy spokesman.

Only two of around a dozen Russian missile-carrying warships have been sunk, however, and Ukraine plans to continue its strikes, Dmytro Pletenchuk added.

"Our ultimate goal is complete absence of military ships of the so-called Russian Federation in the Azov and Black Sea regions," he told The Associated Press.

He was speaking after Ukraine hit the Russian landing ship Konstantin Olshansky at Sevastopol. The ship had been part of Ukraine's navy before Russia annexed Crimea in 2014.

Ukraine's drone and missile strike success has been a big morale boost for a military that is still struggling on the ground against a much larger Russian military.

Two Russian banks have decided to write off debt for those killed or seriously injured by shelling or drones in regions bordering Ukraine.

Sovcombank and Home Bank said they would write off loans to victims in places such as Belgorod, 25 miles from the border, where scores of civilians have been killed since February 2022.

Sovcombank confirmed its move in a statement expressing condolences to those affected by the shelling and drone attacks.

"This support applies to immediate family members: parents, spouses, children who live together with the client," it added.

The move is similar to that made by more than 20 lenders after last week's concert hall attack in Moscow, which killed at least 139 people and wounded 180.

This photo is the aftermath of yesterday's attack on Odesa.

The region's governor Oleh Kiper now says 10 people were injured when a Russian ballistic missile hit the city.

Seven of those people were still receiving treatment today.

Russian forces used a "double tap" tactic, with a second missile striking shortly after the first, with the aim of injuring or killing first responders, said Nataliia Humeniuk, a spokesperson of Ukraine's Southern Operational Command.

Mr Kiper said about 300 apartments were damaged along with the Palace Of Sports.

Ukraine has received almost £700m from the International Monetary Fund, according to the country's prime minister.

Writing on Telegram, Denys Shmyhal said the funding was the third trance of financial support from the Extended Fund Facility's financing programme.

"The funds will help cover priority budget expenditures and maintain macro-financial stability," he said.

"Ukraine continues to successfully fulfil its obligations to partners."

Ukraine's EFF agreement, granting access to £12.3bn, was initially approved on 31 March last year, the Kyiv Post reported.

Partners have promised Ukraine a further £96bn by 2027, with an expected £4.3bn from the IMF in 2024.

We have some more details on the claims made by FSB security agency head Alexander Bortnikov.

The story, originally published by state news agency TASS, has Mr Bortnikov saying Western and Ukrainian services helped radical Islamists to orchestrate the attack on the Moscow concert hall.

Our team in Moscow translated his words as: "It's possible - I think so."

"In any case we are now talking about the facts that we have, this is general information, but there are certain developments."

Mr Bortnikov claimed Ukraine has been trying to prove its capability, TASS reported.

"What is it expected to do to demonstrate its capability?

"It is expected to carry out sabotage and terrorist acts in the rear.

"This is what both the chiefs of Ukraine's special services and the British special services are aiming at.

"US special services have repeatedly mentioned this, too," he said.

Mr Bortnikov said there was a large amount of information in the public space "showing that the West and Ukraine are out to cause greater harm to our country".

"There have been drone strikes, strikes by uncrewed boats at sea, and incursions by groups of saboteurs and terrorist organisations into our territory."

He repeated Vladimir Putin's claim that the attackers planned to escape across the Ukrainian border - something Kyiv has denied.

"I'll let you in on a little secret: they were going to be greeted as heroes on the other side," Mr Bortnikov said, according to the report.

Senior Ukrainian presidential aide Mykhailo Podolyak has responded to Russia's accusations against Ukraine.

He said on X: "The lies are officially spread by (Russian security council secretary Nikolai) Patrushev, and after that by the 'head of FSB' (Alexander) Bortnikov."

Russia's FSB chief Alexander Bortnikov suggested Britain, the US and Ukraine were behind the Moscow concert hall attack.

Russia's FSB chief Alexander Bortnikov has suggested Britain, the US and Ukraine could have been behind the Moscow concert hall attack which killed more than 130 people on Friday.

That comes from Russian state news outlet TASS.

Another state news outlet RIA quoted him as saying Western intelligence services and Ukraine needed the attack to sow panic in Russia.

According to our team in Russia, he was asked if the US, Britain and Ukraine were behind the attack and he said: "It's possible, I think so."

Twenty-two people are in serious condition in hospital, according to Russia's health minister. TASS reported two of them are children.

Four men have appeared in court accused of being the gunmen, all of them from Tajikistan.

Ukraine has already denied any involvement.

Islamic State has claimed responsibility and the US has said its intelligence indicates ISIS-K - an Afghan branch of IS - was responsible.
