Summary [ ].

In their second year together, the crew of Deep Space 9 face problems that will affect the galaxy forever. A Bajoran extremist group attempts to force the Federation out of the Bajoran system . The Cardassians are secretly supplying them with weapons, hoping to return to reclaim the planet and hold the Bajoran wormhole for the Cardassian Union . However, the greatest enemy of all is lurking beyond it.

Background information [ ]

  • This season was broadcast concurrent with Star Trek: The Next Generation Season 7 .
  • Characters which ' cross over ' from other incarnations of Star Trek include, from TOS: Kor , Kang and Koloth (" Blood Oath "), and from TNG: Admiral Alynna Nechayev (" The Maquis, Part II ").
  • All references (of which there were three) to the Dominion prior to the episode " The Jem'Hadar " were specifically designed to create a sense of layering and to convey the idea that the Dominion were involved in many different activities: in " Rules of Acquisition ", it is revealed that they are involved in trade and commerce; in " Sanctuary ", it is revealed that they have a military division; and in " Shadowplay ", it is revealed that they are imperialists who think nothing of invading and conquering an entire planet.
  • Michael Piller was extremely proud of this season; " When we really started doing stories about our space station , and really made it unique to itself, that's when the series, I think, really became special. I think, if you look at the second season of Deep Space Nine , and I think that I would, personally, put that on a par with any single season in the history of Star Trek ." ( New Frontiers: The Story of Deep Space Nine , DS9 Season 2 DVD , Special Features)
  • Robert Hewitt Wolfe also agreed that the show really found its footing during the second season; " By the second season we knew how to do the right things, I think with more consistency, and we started to nail them more often. And we also started to develop the Dominion arc and to really understand more about the Prophets and Bajor and understand the relationship with the characters. So it just became a stronger show. " ( New Frontiers: The Story of Deep Space Nine , DS9 Season 2 DVD , Special Features)
  • This is the only season of Deep Space Nine in which the Prophets do not appear on screen.
  • The first three installments of this season form a linked story arc. " The first three-parter was a commitment to say, 'Hey, look at us. Look at what we can do,' " recalled Michael Piller. " It was, in a sense, supposed to do for us what ' Best of Both Worlds ' had done for Next Generation." ( Captains' Logs: The Unauthorized Complete Trek Voyages , p. 338) Recollected Ira Steven Behr , " Michael Piller called me up and said, 'We're going to open season two with a three-part episode.' Something that had never been done in the franchise history. That's the moment where I started to think, 'Okay, Deep Space Nine gives us opportunities that the other shows do not have or did not have, and that's exciting.' " ( What We Left Behind ) Piller continued, " I think that we succeeded. Those three shows really did show the breadth of ambition of storytelling that we were able to do and the special effects were terrific, the guest stars were great, and the credibility was there. " ( Captains' Logs: The Unauthorized Complete Trek Voyages , p. 338) Colm Meaney observed that this triumvirate of episodes continued an exploration of the "very interesting" subject of religious fundamentalism which had begun in the first season finale " In the Hands of the Prophets ". ("Colm Meaney – Miles O'Brien", The Official Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Magazine  issue 5 , p. 10)

Screen Rant

Star trek: ds9 remade wrath of khan as a romantic tragedy.

Deep Space Nine combined terraforming technology, a doomed romance, and a heroic sacrifice to give Sisko a very different take on The Wrath of Khan.

  • Star Trek: DS9 creatively reimagined Wrath of Khan with a romantic twist, showcasing themes of sacrifice and love in a unique way.
  • The episode "Second Sight" gives Commander Sisko a new romance and a heroic sacrifice, drawing parallels with Wrath of Khan's impact.
  • DS9 writers cleverly tied in themes of sacrifice and love from Wrath of Khan without simply copying the iconic film's plot.

One episode of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine season 2 effectively remade Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan as a romantic tragedy. DS9 has a reputation of being one of the darkest Star Trek shows given how it tackled moral gray areas, and depicted the Federation at war with the Dominion. So retooling the incredibly dark Wrath of Khan for Star Trek: Deep Space Nine 's characters feels like an obvious move. However, what always made DS9 so brilliant was that the show's writers never went for the most obvious approach to telling new types of Star Trek story.

While Star Trek: Deep Space Nine did reference one of the best Star Trek movies , it didn't depict Commander Benjamin Sisko (Avery Brooks) against an implacable enemy. Sisko and Gul Dukat (Marc Alaimo) would become arch-nemeses later in DS9 , but the show's homage to Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan didn't pit the two enemies against each other. Instead, it gave Commander Sisko a new romance, which ended in a heroic sacrifice that had a very similar impact to the end of Wrath of Khan .

Star Trek’s Eugenics Wars & 3 Khan Timelines Explained

Wrath of khan got a romantic remake in star trek: ds9.

In Star Trek: Deep Space Nine season 2, episode 9, "Second Sight", Sisko falls in love for the first time since he lost his wife Jennifer (Felecia M. Bell) during the Battle of Wolf 359. However, there's a twist, as Fenna (Salli Elise Richardson) the woman he's fallen in love with, is revealed to be a psychic projection from the unconscious mind of a woman called Nidell. However, projecting Fenna caused Nidell a great deal of mental and physical strain, putting her life at risk. The revelations about Fenna and Sisko's romance force Nidell's husband, Seyetik (Richard Kiley) to reevaluate his marriage .

Seyetik and Sisko aren't Star Trek arch-rivals like Admiral James T. Kirk (William Shatner) and Khan Noonien Singh (Ricardo Montalban). Instead, the two men realize that they have to put aside their own interests so that Nidell can live. Nidell's species mate for life, so the only way she can be free is if Seyetik dies. Deciding to let his wife go, Seyetik flies a shuttle into the dead sun, triggering a cascade and reigniting it, not unlike Khan exploding the Genesis Device in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan . The scientist's sacrifice draws parallels not just with Khan, but with the heroic sacrifice of Captain Spock (Leonard Nimoy) too.

Khan Noonien Singh would later play an indirect part in the story of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine 's Dr. Julian Bashir (Alexander Siddig) when it was revealed that he too had been genetically enhanced.

Star Trek: DS9 Had Its Own Genesis Device

"Second Sight" was co-written by Mark Gehred-O'Connell, Ira Steven Behr and Robert Hewitt-Wolfe. While the episode is obviously a romantic melodrama, the inclusion of terraforming technology and the core idea of bringing life back to the universe draws clear links with Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan . Discussing the episode in the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Companion , Hewitt-Wolfe revealed that the links between "Second Sight" and The Wrath of Khan were deliberate :

[On Seyetik's technology in the episode] "It was established Federation terraforming technology. Of course, the Genesis device didn't work, but obviously Seyetik's work is built upon the research of previous scientists. And it was a nice way to reference the movie."

"Second Sight" proved that there are interesting ways to explore the impressive number of themes contained within Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan without ripping the movie off wholesale. In "Second Sight", Star Trek: Deep Space Nine teased out the themes of sacrifice, love, and through the bombastic but penitent Seyetik touched on the hubris and arrogance of wanting to play God. It was a testament to the enduring legacy of one of the greatest Star Trek movies ever made.

Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan is streaming now on Max.

All episodes of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine are streaming now on Paramount+.

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, also known as DS9, is the fourth series in the long-running Sci-Fi franchise, Star Trek. DS9 was created by Rick Berman and Michael Piller, and stars Avery Brooks, René Auberjonois, Terry Farrell, and Cirroc Lofton. Star Trek: Deep Space Nine: The Complete Series

Product Description

The complete second season of the TV series Star Trek Deep Space Nine.

Highlight episodes include the alternate-universe "Crossover," which pays homage to the original series' "Mirror, Mirror," and the two-part spotlight on the Maquis (first introduced in The Next Generation ), a loose-knit organization of disenfranchised Federation colonists who resort to terrorist methods to provoke a new war between the Federation and the Cardassians. By the end of season 2, the only thing DS9 lacked was a really good villain. It got three for the price of one. Turns out the Dominion (first discovered in the underappreciated Ferengi spotlight "Rules of Acquisition") is a trinity of evil: the Founders, the Vorta, and the Jem'Hadar, those born-and-bred bad guys whose mission in life is to serve the Founders. The season-closer "The Jem'Hadar" is an intelligent, powerful episode that reveals all--and nothing--about the Dominion. --Kayla Rigney

Set Contains:

Station log: Supplemental. Totaling about 82 minutes, the extra features on DS9 's second season are comparable to those on the first (plus you get six more episodes!). "New Frontiers: The Story of Deep Space Nine " looks at the characters and the second season's key developments. In the crew dossier, Terry Farrell talks about auditioning for the role of Jadzia Dax and how her character evolved (warning: spoilers of events taking place after season 2). Michael Westmore discusses alien makeup, and the 2- to 3-minute "Section 31 Hidden Files" (a.k.a. the world's easiest Easter eggs) spotlight art and sets in addition to certain episodes ("Crossover," "Shadowplay," "Blood Oath," "Cardassians," "Invasive Procedures," "The Circle"). --David Horiuchi

  • Trivia According to Robert Hewitt Wolfe, Seyetik's terraforming technology is based upon the Genesis Device as seen in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock.
  • Goofs It's mentioned that the top speed of the USS Prometheus has been increased to warp 9.5 so that they can escape if the experiment goes wrong and causes a supernova. But even a supernova can't exceed the speed of light, so they would be able to escape at warp 1.

Yesterday was the 4th anniversary of the massacre at Wolf 359, the fourth anniversary of Jennifer's death. I'm not sure what bothers me more, the date itself, or the fact that it almost passed unnoticed.

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine

In 2369, Cardassian forces finally withdraw from 70 years of Bajoran occupation -- leaving the planet, the people and an old orbiting mine station stripped and depleted.

On a distant outpost, an untested crew embarks on an unprecedented journey.

Kira has barely gotten to know her new DS9 colleagues or settled in as a "legitimate" officer of post-occupation Bajor when she has to confront an old fellow freedom-fighter who can't give up the fight -- and the infamous Duras sisters from TNG are a surprise part of his plans.

Odo, the station's mysterious, gruff and yet incredibly fair shape-shifter constable, falls under suspicion for a Bajoran's baffling murder -- and xenophobic hatred rears its ugly head in the station's rush to judgment. Meanwhile, Chief O'Brien's wife Keiko opens a school for the station's youth, and convinces Quark's brother Rom to send his own son, Nog.

An aphasia-like virus planted in DS9's food replicator system by the Bajoran underground against their onetime oppressors lies dormant until being activated during refurbishment.

The first two species to visit through the wormhole are hardly ceremonial: one, described only as "Tosk," is being hunted in a formal, ritualized sport that both he and his pursuers enjoy.

Dr. Bashir and Garak's Relationship is Everything Great About Star Trek: Deep Space Nine

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine added shades of gray to the franchise, and this was best reflected by the relationship between Dr. Bashir and Garak.

  • Star Trek: Deep Space Nine was unlike anything that had come before for the franchise.
  • Dr. Bashir and Garak's relationship perfectly captured why the series was unique and how its characters elevated it.
  • Even at its darkest, Dr. Bashir and Garak's growth as friends showed there was still light in a dark galaxy.

As the first serialized Star Trek show, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine was able to dedicate more time to character arcs and relationship development than either TOS or Star Trek: The Next Generation did. DS9 was also the darkest and most serious show in the franchise at the point it was released, tackling all manner of heavy subjects and showing its characters to be deeply flawed individuals.

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine added shades of gray to the franchise, and this was best reflected by the relationship between Dr. Bashir and Garak. Julian Bashir is among the characters who change the most over the course of the show's seven seasons, and one of the biggest influences on him is the former Cardassian Intelligence Officer, Elim Garak. While Dr. Bashir's closest friend is, without a doubt, Chief Miles O'Brien, there's more than just friendship to Julian and Garak's relationship, and their personal stories complement the themes of the series perfectly.

Dr. Bashir and Garak's Relationship is One of the Strongest in Deep Space Nine

  • Deep Space Nine's Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Julian Bashir, strikes up an unlikely friendship with the former Cardassian spy, Elim Garak.
  • Julian and Garak's actors, Alexander Siddig and Andrew Robinson, respectively, deliberately played the characters as if they were gay, making their chemistry especially memorable.

Dr. Julian Bashir is one of the main characters of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine , serving as the titular Federation space station's Chief Medical Officer. At the beginning of the series, Julian is arrogant, lustful, irritating to his co-workers, and overly excited to be working on one of the most rough and remote outposts possible. Early into his time on Deep Space Nine, Dr. Bashir befriends Elim Garak, a Cardassian tailor working and living on the station. Julian immediately suspects Garak of being a spy, and while Garak doesn't outright admit it, it is understood by Dr. Bashir that his new friend is more than just a plain, simple tailor. This doesn't stop them from sharing a weekly lunch.

Both intellectuals at heart, Julian and Garak enjoy their weekly lunches, where they discuss and debate various subjects of interest, with Garak also often able to provide valuable insight into the secret going-ons happening on the station and in interplanetary affairs. Throughout the many episodes in which they're shown, Julian and Garak's lunchtime exchanges and banter are consistently entertaining and among the most beloved recurring aspects of the show. This comes from not only the witty dialogue, but the chemistry between Julian's actor, Alexander Siddig, and Garak's actor, Andrew Robinson. The actors were good friends, Robinson, upon taking up the role, didn't view the character of Garak as described to him as straight, and Siddig and Robinson deliberately played the characters as if there were romantic and sexual feelings between them. At least some of the writers were aware of this, although showrunner Rick Berman prevented anything from ever being stated outright.

Garak's Influence Changed Julian Forever

  • Julian and Garak find common ground despite their contrasting backgrounds.
  • Deep Space Nine evolves over time from a more typical Star Trek series into a serialized war story.
  • Julian is trained by Garak as a spy and becomes influenced by his view of the universe.

Why Nog Was One of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine's Greatest Characters

While Julian and Garak are able to find common ground as intellectuals who enjoy a good debate, they are starkly different people, especially toward the beginning of the series. The existence of their different outlooks on life is understandable, given their dissimilar backgrounds. While Julian comes from a normal human family, grew up on Earth as a Federation citizen , and had his life changed forever when he was seven and underwent genetic enhancement, Garak is a Cardassian, raised by his father Enabran Train, head of the Obsidian Order, to be a master spy, assassin, interrogator, and torturer. Whereas Julian chose to work on Deep Space Nine because he was a spoiled young man who craved adventure, Garak was exiled to the space station for betraying his father.

As the story of Deep Space Nine progresses, it transitions from focusing on the day-to-day efforts of Commander Benjamin Sisko and his crew working to make DS9 a functional and useful outpost to centering entirely around The Dominion War. As the series shifted its focus to the Federation's struggle against the far more powerful Dominion, so too did Dr. Bashir's character shift. With all the hardships in his life over several years, Julian becomes less naive and more mature. This is complemented by the revelations that Julian was genetically engineered as a child and traumatized by the experience and that much of his early buffoonery was an act.

As Julian is thrown into the grim hardships of war and the dark realities of the society he comes from, it's Garak who guides him through his world. Garak not only helps him to better understand the circumstances he finds himself in but also helps train him in the art of espionage. Thanks to his genetic enhancements, Julian is able to absorb Garak's lifetime of knowledge with ease. While Dr. Bashir ultimately gives in to some of Garak's views, understanding his pessimism and distrustful nature and his negative view of the Federation, Julian refuses to ever fully give in and continues to embrace optimism and to see the good in people. Julian even manages to inspire some hope in his Cardassian friend as he works with Starfleet against Gul Dukat and the rest of his people. Thanks to Garak's teachings, Dr. Bashir is able to play a pivotal role in The Dominion War and uncover Starfleet's most hidden secret.

The Positive and Negative Themes of Deep Space Nine

  • The introduction of Section 31 forever made the setting of Star Trek a darker, less idealistic one.
  • Julian's encounters with Section 31 cause him to become more mature and more like Garak.
  • Julian and Garak's friendship and partnership embody the series' themes of the strength of diversity.

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Cast and Character Guide

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine is an epic and complex space opera that, like all Star Trek series, explores an array of deep themes and asks many complicated questions. What sets DS9 apart from its predecessors is that it was the first series in the franchise to question its core tenants.

In a move that remains controversial to this day among fans, Deep Space Nine establishes that the utopian nature of the Federation is a lie, and humanity's future remains full of darkness. This is made most clear in Deep Space Nine 's sixth season, with the introduction of Section 31. Section 31 is an intelligence and defense agency that, while acting autonomously, is a part of Starfleet. They carry out covert operations in the name of protecting the Federation at all costs, with no regard for Starfleet's code of ethics or principles. The very existence of Section 31 obliterates Gene Roddenberry's vision of the world of Star Trek . The future he imagined, where humanity has evolved past its more corrupt nature, isn't real and is only held up by those willing to cast all morality aside. In essence, stating that a true utopia isn't possible. Among the crew of DS9, Julian fought Section 31 most often, and through these encounters, he both shed naive idealism and grew more competent and dangerous than ever. For all his disagreements with Garak, he becomes more like his friend than he'd ever care to admit.

A more positive theme in Deep Space Nine is the strength that comes from diversity and in learning from cultures outside one's own. This is shown through virtually every aspect of the series, from its core premise of human Starfleet officers running a space station primarily populated with aliens and non-Federation citizens, including Benjamin Sisko's right-hand, Kira Nerys, to the wholesome friendship between Jake Sisko and Nog , a Ferengi who was initially seen as a bad influence but proved to be one of the show's greatest heroes, to the main villains of the show, The Dominion, existing as an identical hivemind. Of course, this is also shown through Bashir and Garak's relationship. Bashir steps outside his comfort zone and learns from Garak, while Garak makes a real friend and learns to be just a little more trusting, allowing them both to become greater heroes.

Despite not being part of the main cast of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine , Garak has fascinating relationships with multiple characters, including Sisko, Odo, and Quark. While fans enjoy all of these pairings, it's the odd friendship between him and Dr. Julian Bashir that continues to stand out in the minds of many as one of the greatest in all of Star Trek . Perhaps if DS9 ever receives a sequel series like Star Trek: Picard , this friendship will even be taken to the next level like Siddig and Robinson always wanted.
